- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, good evening, listeners. Thank you again, as always. I'm
- 0:03Speaker 1: so grateful for all you guys who have built this
- 0:06Speaker 1: podcast up, who listen, who watch. And I've just been,
- 0:11Speaker 1: you know, falling across so many different stories this year,
- 0:15Speaker 1: and they're so different. But I came across Dawn Wilcox,
- 0:20Speaker 1: who's on the screen. And then for those listening, you'll
- 0:22Speaker 1: hear her voice.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's, you know, it's kind of hard to say.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I don't think it's getting any better. I've seen statistics
- 0:32Speaker 2: that say overall, you know, homicide rates in the United
- 0:35Speaker 2: States have gone down and that could possibly be true.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I'm not sure. And that's part of the reason why
- 0:44Speaker 2: I'm trying to gather this data is I don't think
- 0:48Speaker 2: anybody can really answer that question fully, that question. Um,
- 0:56Speaker 2: and you know, so, I mean, that's something that I hope,
- 1:01Speaker 2: I hope, you know, what I'm doing helps in some way. I,
- 1:05Speaker 2: you know, it's a, it's a huge question. And, um,
- 1:10Speaker 2: I think some of the data is very difficult to, um, access.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Like I, I couldn't, access to a lot of the
- 1:20Speaker 2: data because I'm not an academic or I'm not in
- 1:22Speaker 2: criminal justice. So I have to rely on news articles
- 1:28Speaker 2: for the most part. Um, you know, which is kind of,
- 1:32Speaker 2: it can also be a blessing in disguise because a
- 1:34Speaker 2: lot of the data is sort of under the stranglehold
- 1:37Speaker 2: of like law enforcement. Um, and yeah, So that's really
- 1:43Speaker 2: the only way I have hope of kind of getting
- 1:45Speaker 2: access to some of that data. I haven't even gotten
- 1:47Speaker 2: to the point where I've done like freedom of information
- 1:50Speaker 2: requests because I'm already so overwhelmed with what, you know,
- 1:55Speaker 2: information I already have that I do have access to.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Yeah. And what do you think would, do you think
- 2:05Speaker 1: there is something that can help with this, that this
- 2:08Speaker 1: will ever be something that can be eradicated or for
- 2:14Speaker 1: you is it more is there a way i can
- 2:16Speaker 1: inform women maybe give warning signals on this how are
- 2:19Speaker 1: you hoping this data beyond contributing to more knowledge on
- 2:24Speaker 1: the numbers and what type of crimes um how it
- 2:29Speaker 1: can help perhaps.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well i mean help yeah and i mean and this
- 2:36Speaker 2: is And, you know, to be clear, this is an
- 2:39Speaker 2: issue that affects, if you, you know, scroll through some
- 2:41Speaker 2: of the photos of the women, everyone from infant girls
- 2:45Speaker 2: to 90-year-old women, every socioeconomic group, every race, every culture, religion.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And I think the answers to, first of all, I
- 3:02Speaker 2: don't think it's going to be eradicated, just being realistic.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Numbers can be reduced. Um, you know, I think it's
- 3:13Speaker 2: a multi-pronged approach. It is, um, you know, it is
- 3:19Speaker 2: a girl on Tik TOK who's a young woman on
- 3:22Speaker 2: Tik TOK, who's talking about red flags and maybe planting seeds,
- 3:26Speaker 2: you know, and it is, um, you know, domestic violence
- 3:30Speaker 2: agencies providing services. It is, um, You know, unfortunately, a
- 3:38Speaker 2: lot of the approaches that we do use, I think,
- 3:42Speaker 2: aren't very effective, like batter prevention programs. You know, there's
- 3:47Speaker 2: just a high rate of recidivism. And I've even heard
- 3:53Speaker 2: information about, like, restraining orders and protective orders sometimes can
- 4:00Speaker 2: escalate the situation. You know, you would think. You know,
- 4:05Speaker 2: sometimes when a guy gets a restraining order put on him,
- 4:09Speaker 2: that pushes him, and I'm not going to say pushes
- 4:11Speaker 2: him over the edge because that's a decision we're making,
- 4:14Speaker 2: but that escalates their behavior.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Certainly having services for women. I think that, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 2: people who know someone in their life who is experiencing
- 4:30Speaker 2: domestic violence, just understanding that it can be very frustrating
- 4:35Speaker 2: to try to help someone. It can be really actually
- 4:38Speaker 2: even dangerous. I mean, there are helpers who are killed,
- 4:41Speaker 2: you know, a woman staying at a friend's house and
- 4:43Speaker 2: the guy goes in and kills everybody, you know. So
- 4:47Speaker 2: that can be very dangerous, but also it can be
- 4:51Speaker 2: very frustrating to try to help a woman and see
- 4:55Speaker 2: her return to the abuser. And, you know, the kind
- 4:58Speaker 2: of the advice that I give is just understand that
- 5:01Speaker 2: you're planting a seed and that, um, yeah, you know, and,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and you're making it so that when that woman finally
- 5:13Speaker 2: really is ready that she's going to reach out for
- 5:17Speaker 2: help again.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Well, I think that's so, I mean, that's so powerful
- 5:22Speaker 1: you're saying because it's compassion with a boundary. It's like
- 5:26Speaker 1: the sense of like, I will be here. I will
- 5:29Speaker 1: always be here. How much I'm going to participate in
- 5:32Speaker 1: enabling you right now is not something I'm willing to do.
- 5:37Speaker 1: But I want you to know that I'm here for whatever,
- 5:41Speaker 1: you know, when that crisis moment comes and just continuing
- 5:46Speaker 1: to say the truth to that person.
- 5:47Speaker 2: And being patient.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Being as present as you can safely and honestly, you know,
- 5:55Speaker 1: it's different if the person pushes you away, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: they don't want to talk to you anymore. There's nothing
- 5:58Speaker 1: you can do about that. But making sure that there's
- 6:03Speaker 1: that compassionate presence of being there when you know that
- 6:08Speaker 1: time comes, you know.
- 6:10Speaker 2: And you absolutely do.
