- 0:00Speaker 1: We're back with Dan Hurley. Do you con men's basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: coaches show? Mike Chrispino with you, coach, want to talk
- 0:05Speaker 1: to you a little bit about prep game prep. You
- 0:07Speaker 1: have a couple of days between games. How do you
- 0:11Speaker 1: start with the film study or the videotape of previous
- 0:15Speaker 1: games and your opponent? Do you have someone breaking it
- 0:18Speaker 1: down for you? And then do you say, well, we're
- 0:20Speaker 1: going to focus on this when we get together with
- 0:22Speaker 1: the team. What is that process like, because obviously it's
- 0:26Speaker 1: such an important part of getting ready for every game.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, so I'd imagine Luke and these guys,
- 0:32Speaker 2: you know, Luke Kamani now Mike, you know, are probably
- 0:37Speaker 2: consuming you know, seven eight games, you know, and then
- 0:42Speaker 2: you know, but the scouts are split now a third
- 0:45Speaker 2: of the you know, a third for each so you know,
- 0:49Speaker 2: for so for these guys, for the most part, they'll
- 0:51Speaker 2: be responsible for a scout and then you know, they'll
- 0:55Speaker 2: unless they just have bad luck with the way the
- 0:58Speaker 2: schedule falls and conference play, you know, they'll probably have
- 1:01Speaker 2: ten days two weeks before their next one, or at
- 1:04Speaker 2: least a week. You know. So for me, I'm comfortable
- 1:08Speaker 2: watching five, you know, for me, I like to be
- 1:11Speaker 2: able to watch five of the games of our opponent,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and then I want to see if it's someone in league,
- 1:18Speaker 2: I like to watch, uh just all the clips of
- 1:21Speaker 2: how they've guarded us defensively in the prior year, just
- 1:25Speaker 2: what their game plan was reguarding off ball things or
- 1:28Speaker 2: ball screen defense or different different things that they did.
- 1:32Speaker 2: So for me, it's five games and then and then
- 1:35Speaker 2: the way that that team guarded us if we've played
- 1:38Speaker 2: them in the past. Because for me, it's different. You
- 1:41Speaker 2: know that the you know, I've got every scout, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, Kamani and Luke and Mike, they've got their
- 1:47Speaker 2: scout and then obviously they don't go on vacation in between. Yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 2: because their position coaches and they're invested and they're looking
- 1:54Speaker 2: to assist whoever has the scout. You know, they're very
- 1:57Speaker 2: aware of the opponent as well. But yeah, I mean
- 2:01Speaker 2: it's it's when you've got when you play, and then
- 2:03Speaker 2: you've got uh, you know, say you play a game,
- 2:07Speaker 2: you we've got to do our self correcting edit of
- 2:10Speaker 2: the game that we just played. And then that next morning,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you know, you're basically glued to the tablet you're watching
- 2:17Speaker 2: it while you're riding the peloton bike. You're watching it,
- 2:20Speaker 2: while you're in the sauna, You're watching it while you're
- 2:23Speaker 2: walking around the building. You basically have your iPad like
- 2:28Speaker 2: the kids these days, but only I'm not on social
- 2:30Speaker 2: media watching TikTok. I'm watching you know, I'm watching game field.
- 2:37Speaker 1: That's a good idea. You start watching TikTok, you can't stop.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I I'm guilty of it once in a while myself.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Now when you get in a session with the players,
- 2:44Speaker 1: that's my next question. Uh, now you were I think
- 2:48Speaker 1: you you taught history, didn't you? A Saint Benedict's if
- 2:50Speaker 1: I remember right?
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 2:52Speaker 1: All right, So you have you have some experience in
- 2:55Speaker 1: keeping guys attention in a classroom, which isn't always easy.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Now you got them in a in a film room
- 3:01Speaker 1: and you're talking about things. How do you keep guys attention?
- 3:04Speaker 1: How do you make sure that it's absorbed what you're
- 3:07Speaker 1: talking about and what you're showing them on tape?
- 3:10Speaker 2: Well, no, what if they don't love the game? I mean,
- 3:12Speaker 2: if they're in this for clicks or you know, for
- 3:15Speaker 2: the ni L bag. You know there's you know, you
- 3:18Speaker 2: could stand on your head while holding your breath. And
- 3:22Speaker 2: it's not going to matter if you don't have people
- 3:24Speaker 2: that love the game and are truly here to experience
- 3:29Speaker 2: championship level success and glory and to become the best
- 3:33Speaker 2: player they can be. I mean, it doesn't matter what
- 3:35Speaker 2: you're doing up there. So and for you know, I'd say,
- 3:40Speaker 2: for me, it's like when you're when you teach. You know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: when you're a high school teacher and a coach, you
- 3:46Speaker 2: know how to control a huddle, you know how to
- 3:47Speaker 2: control a classroom. You know how to keep people's attention.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You know how to change the inflection of your voice
- 3:55Speaker 2: or or or or the different mannerisms to keep people's
- 4:00Speaker 2: tension and and and speak with energy. And obviously I'm
- 4:03Speaker 2: not very monotone with the way that I communicate, so uh.
- 4:07Speaker 2: And then splicing in different clips, either you know, to
- 4:11Speaker 2: to you know, humor or or or to make a point,
- 4:16Speaker 2: a strong point with a movie clip you know, or
- 4:20Speaker 2: or or a picture of a player or a moment
- 4:24Speaker 2: in history it you know, sometimes just splash those in
- 4:28Speaker 2: to keep them guessing as to what's gonna pop on
- 4:31Speaker 2: the screen next. Is it just going to be a
- 4:32Speaker 2: basketball clip, or is it going to be the old
- 4:36Speaker 2: cartoon of mister Magoo, uh for thirty seconds, because we've
- 4:40Speaker 2: got players that are playing looking like they have no awareness.
- 4:45Speaker 2: They're almost like they can't see it. So yeah, I
- 4:48Speaker 2: mean they're now they look at mister Magoo and like,
- 4:51Speaker 2: look at this cartoon that this old hater is showing us.
- 4:55Speaker 2: But you know it's uh, you know, it gets the
- 4:58Speaker 2: reaction I want keeps them in game.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Okay, So Butler, the other night, the opening five minutes
- 5:05Speaker 1: were kind of ugly. They look like they came in
- 5:07Speaker 1: ready to roll, and they played well in the first
- 5:10Speaker 1: eight or ten minutes. Tell me about the first tundle
- 5:14Speaker 1: what happened there, because I think the crowd was kind
- 5:16Speaker 1: of stunned. He fell behind nine to two, eleven four whatever.
- 5:19Speaker 1: They were running up and down the court doing whatever
- 5:22Speaker 1: they wanted to. What did you do to reverse that trend?
- 5:26Speaker 2: I mean it was not how you want to start. Yeah,
- 5:29Speaker 2: it's not how you want to start the big E season,
- 5:31Speaker 2: especially when you put yourself in such a good spot.
- 5:34Speaker 2: So yeah, just to start the game executing what we wanted,
- 5:38Speaker 2: getting the lob dunk and then giving up a dunk
- 5:40Speaker 2: at the other end on a mad dunk I mean,
- 5:42Speaker 2: it just tells you that the group is not ready
- 5:45Speaker 2: to play. You know, I'm tough on the players privately
- 5:50Speaker 2: from a practice standpoint, but publicly, I'm very protective of
- 5:53Speaker 2: the players, and I think sometimes to a fault, I
- 5:56Speaker 2: let them play through things because I'm soaking learned about
- 6:00Speaker 2: their confidence and not embarrassing them or just hurting their
- 6:05Speaker 2: their self belief. So I probably should have gotten three
- 6:08Speaker 2: or four of those starters off the court within the
- 6:10Speaker 2: first minute or two. The turnovers, the lack of a
- 6:15Speaker 2: defensive effort, the lack of the urgency that you need.
- 6:18Speaker 2: So yeah, that's probably one of my faults as a coach.
- 6:21Speaker 2: That is you know, is that is that in those
- 6:25Speaker 2: type of settings, I'll let a player play too long
- 6:29Speaker 2: rather than pull them too early. There's no perfect coach.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Nope, that's for sure. All right, Dan, stick with us.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Got another segment. We're in talking with some big East
- 6:38Speaker 1: what's going on. Your alma Mater's off the pretty good start.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Their Seaton Hall Pirates doing some nice things among others.
- 6:45Speaker 1: We'll be back more of the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
- 6:48Speaker 1: In a moment on lear Field
