- 0:08Speaker 2: Frostbrood Coors Light, as cold as the Rockies. The latest
- 0:12Speaker 2: on Sam Darnold's hip gate. Hip injury, Mike McDonald said
- 0:17Speaker 2: Thursday afternoon the news remains positive. Saying again, there is
- 0:21Speaker 2: no fracture. However, he did say the team will need
- 0:25Speaker 2: a bit more time before deciding whether Darnold might have
- 0:28Speaker 2: to miss Some games, the Seahawks won't play again until
- 0:33Speaker 2: September 20th at Arizona, but looking like Drew Locke will
- 0:37Speaker 2: likely be the starter. We keep waiting on pins and needles. Julio,
- 0:43Speaker 2: big three-run homer yesterday. Logan Gilbert, seven innings, a three-run ball,
- 0:50Speaker 2: 11 punch-outs. Mariners beat the Rangers for what it's worth.
- 0:54Speaker 3: 4-3.
- 0:54Speaker 2: They took 2-3 in the series over Texas, but are
- 0:58Speaker 2: still back. Six games back in the AL West, five
- 1:01Speaker 2: games back in the wild card. It's getting to mid-September.
- 1:05Speaker 2: So you're telling me there's a chance? Not really, but
- 1:11Speaker 2: one in a million. You might know that movie, by
- 1:13Speaker 2: the way. The M's now head to Sacramento to face
- 1:15Speaker 2: the A's. For a three-game series tonight, 640, George Kirby
- 1:20Speaker 2: against Jeffrey Springs. We know what happened last time for
- 1:25Speaker 2: the Mariners hitters. It did not end well.
- 1:26Speaker 4: Oh, boy.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Niners dominate team. The Rams last night at Melbourne, 27-7.
- 1:31Speaker 2: So much for that plane ride. And all that rest
- 1:37Speaker 2: about five hours before kickoff, it felt like. Brock Purdy,
- 1:41Speaker 2: three TD passes. Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, Debo Samuel all
- 1:46Speaker 2: caught them in the route. Matthew Stafford couldn't get anything going.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Just 15 of 25 for only 155 yards. San Francisco
- 1:55Speaker 2: facing Miami. And then the Rams, or pardon, week two,
- 1:59Speaker 2: the Rams hosting the Giants as well. in week two.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Huskies hosting Utah State tomorrow, 12.30. You can hear that
- 2:05Speaker 2: right here on 93.3 KJR FM with our favorite dog friends,
- 2:10Speaker 2: including the great Elyse Woodward, Cam Cleland, and our own
- 2:14Speaker 2: Dave Softy-Muller on the sidelines. Huskies coming off an Apple
- 2:17Speaker 2: Cup victory last week, but we'll need to show a
- 2:20Speaker 2: little more offensive consistency. The Aggies 0-1 after a stunning
- 2:24Speaker 2: 29-17 loss to Idaho State. They are coached by, you
- 2:29Speaker 2: might know this guy, Bronco Mendenhall, who's faced the Huskies
- 2:33Speaker 2: as coach of BYU three times, winning just once. Oh,
- 2:37Speaker 2: by the way, Utah State, you know how many wins
- 2:39Speaker 2: they have against Big Ten teams in program history? I
- 2:43Speaker 2: can count them on one finger.
- 2:46Speaker 5: One.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So you're telling me there's a chance. Let's go to
- 2:49Speaker 2: the show. as part of our relentless coverage of the NFL.
- 2:53Speaker 4: This is football!
- 2:54Speaker 6: This is football!
- 2:55Speaker 1: This is a Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday.
- 2:59Speaker 2: This crowd is going nuts!
- 3:01Speaker 1: Football Fridays are brought to you by Washington's beef farmers
- 3:05Speaker 1: and ranchers.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Beef, it's what's for dinner.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It's Football Friday with Greg Bell on your home for
- 3:13Speaker 1: the NFL.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR-FM. And because the great Greg Bell
- 3:22Speaker 2: is on an airplane here for today, we're still going
- 3:24Speaker 2: to carry the football tours throughout much of this show.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Mike Benton in his chair in his place again. For
- 3:29Speaker 2: those on YouTube, thanks again for hanging out with us.
- 3:32Speaker 2: The number right here, by the way, dial at 49451
- 3:35Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge Tech Slam. We're going to get to your techs,
- 3:37Speaker 2: your top backs as well. But first things first, we're
- 3:40Speaker 2: still kind of clear in the air here from the
- 3:42Speaker 2: Seahawks win over New England two nights ago. Andrew Destin
- 3:46Speaker 2: of The Athletic is going to be along with us.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Very fun conversation I'm looking forward to coming up at 10.20,
- 3:51Speaker 2: and we're going to get into Sam Darnold and Drew
- 3:54Speaker 2: Locke and the struggle that is within the initial grades
- 3:58Speaker 2: here on OC Brian Flurry. Jadarian Price, after they got
- 4:03Speaker 2: him out of the mothballs from roughly 10 months, he
- 4:07Speaker 2: was good, but do you want more of him?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And did last night also tell us more about the
- 4:12Speaker 2: Niners or more about the Rams? Travis Moger on the
- 4:15Speaker 2: other side of the glass.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Hi, Mike. Hi, Travis.
- 4:19Speaker 2: So we're going to get to Andrew, but Rams, Niners,
- 4:22Speaker 2: how about that plane ride for the Rams? How'd that
- 4:24Speaker 2: work out? Not so great.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
- 4:27Speaker 7: Turns out playing a football game 24 hours after a
- 4:30Speaker 7: 15-hour flight is not good.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Hey, guess what? Newsflash. Jet lag exists. Do the Niners
- 4:37Speaker 2: send the Rams a Christmas card for what they did
- 4:40Speaker 2: to get ready for that game?
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Oh, my goodness. Andrew Dessen's going to join us here again,
- 4:46Speaker 2: covering the Seahawks for the Athletic. 1045, it's also important
- 4:51Speaker 2: to note, we're getting into the throws of Kraken camp.
- 4:55Speaker 2: This is the rookie camp side that begins today. So technically,
- 4:58Speaker 2: it is underway beginning today at Kraken Community Iceplex, but
- 5:03Speaker 2: it's You're not going to be seeing guys like Philip Grubauer.
- 5:06Speaker 2: You're not going to be seeing guys like Joey Decord,
- 5:09Speaker 2: Matty Beneers, Jared McCann. It's all rookies today through a
- 5:14Speaker 2: few days this next week. They're going to go to
- 5:16Speaker 2: Abbotsford to face the Canucks rookies as well this weekend.
- 5:19Speaker 2: But rookie camp is, I think, the beginning of a
- 5:23Speaker 2: very important word. I'll get to that soon. That's going
- 5:26Speaker 2: to not just define training camp, but where the Kraken
- 5:29Speaker 2: could be shaped long term. Potentially a big piece of
- 5:33Speaker 2: this is a guy that you may have heard of
- 5:35Speaker 2: in Oscar Fisker-Molgaard. I caught up with him, by the way,
- 5:39Speaker 2: one day ago at Kraken Community Iceplex. We're going to
- 5:41Speaker 2: have that conversation coming up at 1045, which also revolves
- 5:45Speaker 2: around how he gets ready and how much weight he's
- 5:47Speaker 2: put on here for this summer. That's the big thing.
- 5:50Speaker 2: That's the important thing in being ready to face prime. pristine,
- 5:54Speaker 2: and matured NHL competition. So the goal from the outset
- 5:58Speaker 2: of rookie camp is NHL spots in his sight. We're
- 6:01Speaker 2: going to get to Oscar Fisker-Mulgaard coming up at 1045.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Then at 11 o'clock, I'm looking forward to this conversation
- 6:07Speaker 2: because Greg Bell, very much a proponent, a backer, an
- 6:10Speaker 2: advocate of high school football. I know where I was
- 6:14Speaker 2: back in the days of Friday Night Lights. Issaquah and Liberty,
- 6:20Speaker 2: come on down. The spotlight's on you coming up at
- 6:22Speaker 2: 11 o'clock. Steve Valich of Liberty, Josh Brookshire of Issaquah.
- 6:27Speaker 2: We're going to get to that conversation. They'll join us
- 6:29Speaker 2: live here in the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. The genesis of
- 6:32Speaker 2: football's next generation. is right here in the Pacific Northwest.
- 6:36Speaker 2: So these are coaches, mind you, that are responsible for
- 6:40Speaker 2: leading the charge here for the next generation and get
- 6:42Speaker 2: them ready for the college ranks. So what goes into
- 6:45Speaker 2: them as far as their heart and soul, the secret sauce?
- 6:48Speaker 2: I can't wait for this conversation. I know you'll want
- 6:50Speaker 2: to stick around for this as well. That coming up
- 6:53Speaker 2: for our high school football spotlight at 11 a.m. and,
- 6:56Speaker 2: of course, 1130. Travis, you got the stage for Factor Fiction.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I can't wait for this.
- 7:03Speaker 3: 11.35.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yep, 11.35, Factor Fiction, all courtesy of our friends, presented
- 7:07Speaker 2: by Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. Again, in case you're just
- 7:11Speaker 2: new here to this, once again, we're going to play
- 7:12Speaker 2: this every day, weekday. It ends on December 11th, and
- 7:17Speaker 2: we do this as well based on a pick for
- 7:19Speaker 2: an upcoming college or professional football game, either against the
- 7:23Speaker 2: spread or the total over or under. Basically here for
- 7:25Speaker 2: this time at 11.35, it's Travis has a floor. You
- 7:29Speaker 2: listen to Travis, his pick. If you like the pick,
- 7:32Speaker 2: text FICTION. Or if you like it, I should say
- 7:35Speaker 2: text FACTS to 49451. If you hate it, text FICTION
- 7:38Speaker 2: to 49451. We'll get to that. And again, anyone who
- 7:42Speaker 2: texts in a correct answer will be eligible to win $ 1, 000.
- 7:47Speaker 2: I know you can use $ 1, 000, friends, in your pocket anytime.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So again, get ready for that coming up at 1135.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And again, talkbacks and texts as well coming up. A
- 7:57Speaker 2: little before that, before we get to the football side
- 8:00Speaker 2: of things here with Andrew Destin, today is the 25th
- 8:04Speaker 2: anniversary of 9-11. And I think for many of us
- 8:08Speaker 2: who were alive for this, you know where you were
- 8:12Speaker 2: by this time when it happened. And it just seemed
- 8:14Speaker 2: like the entire country was turned into upheaval. And if
- 8:19Speaker 2: you were too born or if you were too young
- 8:22Speaker 2: or not even born yet, You learned about how just
- 8:27Speaker 2: a few seconds of chaos in the worst kind of
- 8:30Speaker 2: way can just change the nation forever. And what was
- 8:34Speaker 2: the deadliest attack in world history? 2,996 lives lost here
- 8:40Speaker 2: from those attacks. And it not only just, I think,
- 8:43Speaker 2: shook our country for several days and even for the future.
- 8:47Speaker 2: And I'm not going to get into the weeds of
- 8:49Speaker 2: this because I guess we all know as far as
- 8:52Speaker 2: ramifications on this. But I remember where I was back
- 8:55Speaker 2: then 25 years ago. Travis, I bet you were as well, too.
- 8:58Speaker 2: I was a student over at Azusa Pacific. The hat
- 9:00Speaker 2: I'm wearing right now. And I was in my campus apartment,
- 9:05Speaker 2: totally unaware what was going on when I got up
- 9:07Speaker 2: at 7 in the morning, got myself some college breakfast
- 9:10Speaker 2: cereal out of the cabinet, fired up my roommate's Mac
- 9:16Speaker 2: to look at the scores from the previous night. NHL
- 9:19Speaker 2: training camp was getting underway. I'm dating myself, but we
- 9:23Speaker 2: had AOL Instant Messenger back then. And I was getting
- 9:26Speaker 2: on talking to a buddy who was a fellow hockey
- 9:29Speaker 2: fan in the Los Angeles area just to pontificate on
- 9:32Speaker 2: NHL training camps. And the response I got back from
- 9:36Speaker 2: him was, how could you be talking hockey at a
- 9:39Speaker 2: time like this? And I go, what do you mean?
- 9:43Speaker 2: And he goes, turn on the TV right now. I
- 9:47Speaker 2: turned it on. I can't remember. My jaw hitting the
- 9:53Speaker 2: floor as hard as it did at that moment. School
- 9:57Speaker 2: shut down for three days.
- 9:58Speaker 4: I mean, support.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Groups, vigils, prayer groups, whatever. You know, we saw the
- 10:03Speaker 2: effects as far as security measures. Just look at airport
- 10:06Speaker 2: these days and how airports operate. But sports was paused
- 10:11Speaker 2: for about five to seven days across Major League Baseball,
- 10:14Speaker 2: the NFL, college football, the Ryder Cup, NASCAR. But yet
- 10:19Speaker 2: when they returned, everyone came together across this landscape, unlike
- 10:24Speaker 2: any other time, Travis, that I had ever seen. And
- 10:28Speaker 2: we saw the World Series get pushed into November. We
- 10:31Speaker 2: saw Sammy Sosa running out with the flag. The Mariners,
- 10:36Speaker 2: they have their statue up now with Mike Cameron, Mark
- 10:39Speaker 2: McLemore holding the U.S.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Flag.
- 10:41Speaker 2: So I think for me, it's a pretty sobering day
- 10:45Speaker 2: in the sports landscape, in addition to how we just
- 10:49Speaker 2: move on and we just kind of digest and process
- 10:54Speaker 2: emotional things with this for those physical losses as well,
- 10:58Speaker 2: which was tragic. But it reminded us that sometimes sports
- 11:02Speaker 2: takes a back seat here and sports is the toy
- 11:05Speaker 2: department of life.
- 11:06Speaker 6: Absolutely.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It's such a, it was such a tragic day.
- 11:09Speaker 7: And what I keep going back to is how everyone
- 11:13Speaker 7: rallied together afterwards and the country came together and it
- 11:16Speaker 7: was the most patriotic time I've ever witnessed in this country.
- 11:21Speaker 7: And that, I mean, that was truly uplifting and, and
- 11:25Speaker 7: made you realize that, you know, there is some humanity here.
- 11:30Speaker 2: Left in people.
- 11:32Speaker 4: And, uh, yeah, I, it was, uh, just tragic.
- 11:37Speaker 2: It was even affecting, you know, even the, the pro
- 11:39Speaker 2: sports that as far as lives who were lost, um,
- 11:42Speaker 2: Ace Bailey, Mark Davis, who were Los Angeles Kings scouts
- 11:45Speaker 2: were on one of those planes that crash into the
- 11:47Speaker 2: twin towers. Those lives were lost and they were memorialized
- 11:52Speaker 2: for the very first preseason game. with the Los Angeles
- 11:55Speaker 2: Kings just a few days later, and then they wore
- 11:57Speaker 2: a patch on their jersey to honor them for the
- 12:01Speaker 2: entire season. But it was a heavy day, the heaviest
- 12:05Speaker 2: that I'd ever felt for one day for something that
- 12:07Speaker 2: had this much, I think, weight. And it's one of
- 12:12Speaker 2: those days where it just never leaves your mind whenever
- 12:14Speaker 2: the calendar flips back to September 11th. So I think
- 12:18Speaker 2: we all know where we were 25 years ago if
- 12:20Speaker 2: you were around back then. And it's still very much
- 12:23Speaker 2: a sobering reminder of just how much just things matter
- 12:26Speaker 2: and how life matters as far as superseding sports, even
- 12:30Speaker 2: for something like this. Again, Andrew Destin coming up in
- 12:34Speaker 2: just a few minutes here. The Seahawks 1-0, but here's
- 12:37Speaker 2: what I'm really curious about. Were they really at their best?
- 12:41Speaker 2: And for all the talk that we heard about the
- 12:44Speaker 2: Rams 17-0, there are literal sports columnists who predicted this,
- 12:51Speaker 2: and they're getting rabidly dunked on right now on social media.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Here's the thing. With the Rams and You know, you
- 12:59Speaker 2: can make the blame, you know, for travel and everything.
- 13:02Speaker 2: But again, the Seahawks did all of this with an
- 13:05Speaker 2: OC in his debut, didn't have his quarterback in for
- 13:09Speaker 2: all but maybe, you know, it felt like two minutes.
- 13:12Speaker 2: No Nicky Manwari, and it felt like Jadarian Price was
- 13:15Speaker 2: just getting started. So until Sam Darnold's okay... And when
- 13:21Speaker 2: he comes back, Hugh Millen brought this up just the
- 13:24Speaker 2: other day, and I think it's a great point. How
- 13:27Speaker 2: effective will Sam Darnold be given the nature of his
- 13:30Speaker 2: hip injury? Because in case you forgot... Hips are a
- 13:34Speaker 2: pretty important thing when it comes to mobility of a
- 13:37Speaker 2: professional sports athlete. So how much juice can you get
- 13:42Speaker 2: out of Drew Locke possible until it's finally Sam Darnold's
- 13:46Speaker 2: time to return? I don't doubt that the Seahawks can
- 13:49Speaker 2: easily win this division. I think we've seen again that
- 13:53Speaker 2: the sum of the parts is greater here than just
- 13:56Speaker 2: one guy. But again, you're trying to put this here
- 14:01Speaker 2: to the test with QB2. And QB2 has his limitations.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I don't think they're a Super Bowl team without Sam Darnold.
- 14:10Speaker 2: But how far can you get with Drew Locke? 49451,
- 14:13Speaker 2: I want to hear from you on this. How worried
- 14:15Speaker 2: are you about Sam Darnold right now? Will he come
- 14:18Speaker 2: back after the Arizona game? I think he's not going
- 14:20Speaker 2: to play. But then he's got about 17 days off
- 14:23Speaker 2: here to finally get right and get right back here.
- 14:26Speaker 4: So, again, 49451. Talkbacks.
- 14:27Speaker 2: We're going to take this right now, by the way,
- 14:30Speaker 2: at the iHeartRadio app. Just go right there. Find 933KJR.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Hit the red mic icon. We're going to get you going.
- 14:37Speaker 2: Air your peace. Air your grievances. Air your impersonations. I've
- 14:41Speaker 2: heard myself. I got to hear one of you two,
- 14:43Speaker 2: by the way. We haven't heard Moger the Ogre yet.
- 14:47Speaker 7: I haven't heard one yet either, but I'm scared now.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Somebody is out there waiting with a Mulgrew the Ogre
- 14:54Speaker 2: impression for talkbacks. It's going to happen. And I felt
- 14:57Speaker 2: like I've officially made it when somebody came on talkbacks
- 15:01Speaker 2: and made fun of me. We welcome it. This is
- 15:03Speaker 2: what we're all about here. Bring it on. That's what
- 15:06Speaker 2: we're all about here at this radio station. Andrew Destin's
- 15:09Speaker 2: up next again here from The Athletic. We'll dive into
- 15:11Speaker 2: all things Seahawks, Sam Darnold, Hipgate, the level of concern
- 15:14Speaker 2: with that, and more. Andrew joins us next here at
- 15:17Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Now back to the.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday with Greg Bell on
- 15:26Speaker 1: your home for the NFL. Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Feels kind of like the mini-bye is underway right now.
- 15:36Speaker 2: So Greg Bell is on a plane. Mike Benton in
- 15:39Speaker 2: his chair for today. Beginning of next week as well
- 15:42Speaker 2: on Monday. For you YouTubers, by the way, at right
- 15:45Speaker 2: over here, 49451 Tacoma Dodge text line. Seahawks are 1-0,
- 15:51Speaker 2: but have we begun to scratch the surface? How much
- 15:53Speaker 2: more do you want out of the run game? How
- 15:55Speaker 2: much are you waiting pins and needles on Sam Darnold's
- 15:58Speaker 2: hip game? Talkbacks as well. iHeartRadio app, by the way, 1135.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction coming up. Travis has got the stage
- 16:07Speaker 2: for Fact or Fiction presented by Lucky Eagle Casino Resort.
- 16:11Speaker 2: He's got a pick for you. If you love it,
- 16:13Speaker 2: text FACT to 49451. If you hate it, text FICTION
- 16:17Speaker 2: to 49451. You'll be eligible to win, if you text correctly,
- 16:23Speaker 2: $ 1, 000 for Factor Fiction presented by Lucky Eagle Casino Resort. 10.45,
- 16:30Speaker 2: Oscar Fisker, a mole guard checking in from Kraken Rookie Camp.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Before that, though... Already underway, the Seahawks and all the
- 16:38Speaker 2: good vibes surrounding a championship team that still won even
- 16:43Speaker 2: without its QB1 for most of the game and found
- 16:48Speaker 2: a way to get it done against a New England
- 16:51Speaker 2: quarterback that is right now taking his hits. And then
- 16:55Speaker 2: some to talk about this, our friend Andrew Destin of
- 16:58Speaker 2: The Athletic Now. on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Andrew, good
- 17:02Speaker 2: morning to you. First off, congratulations on the new rule.
- 17:05Speaker 2: How are you holding in there?
- 17:08Speaker 4: Doing well, Mike. Thanks for having me on.
- 17:09Speaker 3: It's a pleasure to be on KJR, and new roles
- 17:12Speaker 3: treat me well. It's definitely very, very different from the
- 17:15Speaker 3: AP gig, which I have nothing but good things to
- 17:17Speaker 3: say about my time at the Associated Press, but it's
- 17:20Speaker 3: really nice to continue to get to know the Seahawks better,
- 17:23Speaker 3: to cover the team a little bit more closely, and
- 17:25Speaker 3: build some of those reports with players, coaches, the team personnel,
- 17:29Speaker 3: and whatnot. Really enjoying it so far. It's a pleasure
- 17:33Speaker 3: to be here in the Pacific Northwest. I've loved my
- 17:35Speaker 3: time here.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Really enjoying the new gig.
- 17:36Speaker 2: You got those new job vibes going, man. I love it.
- 17:39Speaker 2: But I think you got to maybe have like a
- 17:40Speaker 2: bone to pick with the schedule makers because you get
- 17:42Speaker 2: through one game and it's like, what gives now? Many buy,
- 17:46Speaker 2: like I get 10 days off now and like nothing
- 17:48Speaker 2: to do. So like, what do you do for 10
- 17:50Speaker 2: days off with this football team?
- 17:52Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Well, yeah, that's a great question. I mean, I think
- 17:55Speaker 3: if you're the Seahawks, right. You are totally, totally digging
- 17:58Speaker 3: into the film. And I wrote about this today for
- 18:00Speaker 3: The Athletic, specifically on the offensive side of the.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Ball, because let's be honest, right? It was not pretty
- 18:06Speaker 4: on Wednesday night.
- 18:09Speaker 3: And that's not to slander anybody. And that's not to
- 18:11Speaker 3: say that it's an easy excuse to say, oh, well.
- 18:14Speaker 3: The reason the offense didn't look great is because Sam
- 18:16Speaker 3: Darnold was injured. I think it's a little bit deeper
- 18:19Speaker 3: than that. I think you're adjusting to a new offensive
- 18:21Speaker 3: coordinator in Brian Fleury. You've got a completely different stable
- 18:25Speaker 3: of running backs back there with George Helani, Emmanuel Wilson, and,
- 18:28Speaker 3: of course, rookie Jadarian Price.
- 18:30Speaker 4: There's just a lot of moving parts.
- 18:32Speaker 3: And, sure, having the continuity like all five offensive linemen returning,
- 18:37Speaker 3: Cooper Cupp and Jackson Smith and Jigba being back, A.J.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Barner being back, from that Super Bowl team last year.
- 18:44Speaker 3: So when you ask me what do they do for
- 18:46Speaker 3: the next 10 years, How.
- 18:52Speaker 4: Can we trim down on the mistakes?
- 18:54Speaker 3: I mean, 10 penalties for 98 penalty.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Yards, you know, just across the board.
- 18:59Speaker 3: It was a very sloppy game, which is to be
- 19:00Speaker 3: expected of a week one performance. But I think this
- 19:03Speaker 3: is a little bit more so than a typical team because, yeah,
- 19:06Speaker 3: it's your third offensive coordinator in three years. These guys
- 19:09Speaker 3: have to get used to a new system, which theoretically
- 19:12Speaker 3: should be relatively similar to Clint Kubiak's from last season
- 19:16Speaker 3: as a modern West Coast offense.
- 19:18Speaker 4: But there's always nips and crannies. There's always nuances that
- 19:20Speaker 4: are different.
- 19:21Speaker 3: And I mean, we kind of saw that play out
- 19:23Speaker 3: on Wednesday. And who's to say that Seattle can't remedy
- 19:26Speaker 3: that by the time they play the Cardinals on the 20th?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Well, thanks to Josh, Joe, the Seahawks are 1-0 right now.
- 19:31Speaker 2: But to you, is there a feeling that the defense
- 19:34Speaker 2: earned this one in totality or Drake may have lost
- 19:37Speaker 2: this one?
- 19:39Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 19:40Speaker 4: That's a tough one.
- 19:42Speaker 3: I'm going to give credit to the defense because, listen,
- 19:44Speaker 3: Drake May is an excellent, excellent quarterback.
- 19:47Speaker 4: I'm not here to listen to any of the sandbags.
- 19:50Speaker 4: of the guy.
- 19:50Speaker 3: There's a reason he was a runner-up for MVP last year.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I'm not here for the discourse of the Patriots had
- 19:55Speaker 3: super easy schedule last year.
- 19:57Speaker 4: None of that.
- 19:58Speaker 3: The Seahawks defense is the best in the NFL until
- 20:01Speaker 3: proven otherwise. So I'm going to give credit to the
- 20:03Speaker 3: guys who really continue to show out and you don't
- 20:06Speaker 3: rack up three interceptions in a quarter, unless you're really
- 20:09Speaker 3: tricking the quarterback and frustrating him.
- 20:11Speaker 4: And I know Drake may said.
- 20:12Speaker 3: This, I wasn't in the locker room or for the
- 20:14Speaker 3: press conference on this side, because it's covering the Seahawks,
- 20:16Speaker 3: but you know, Drake may admitted that he was frustrated and,
- 20:19Speaker 3: you know, got impatient and said, I'm going to try
- 20:22Speaker 3: and take shots downfield because I am sick of digging
- 20:25Speaker 3: and dunking it and methodically moving down the field and,
- 20:28Speaker 3: that's a sign of a good defense right that's a
- 20:30Speaker 3: bend don't break defense that forces you into uncomfortable situations
- 20:34Speaker 3: and makes you really upset that you can't go deep
- 20:37Speaker 3: down the field so i'm going to give credit to
- 20:39Speaker 3: the secondary and frankly that's off to the defense at
- 20:42Speaker 3: large but the secondary in specific because you had so
- 20:46Speaker 3: many guys down with injury whether it was nick him
- 20:48Speaker 3: and rory ty okada um you lost guys in free
- 20:52Speaker 3: agency like goby bryant like reek woolen The same way
- 20:56Speaker 3: I was talking about the running back stable, this secondary
- 21:00Speaker 3: is totally different from last year. It's going to take
- 21:02Speaker 3: time to adjust. Maybe less so for that group as
- 21:05Speaker 3: we saw on Wednesday against the Pats.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I mean, some of the words I heard were that
- 21:09Speaker 2: Drake May was looking like a high school quarterback out there,
- 21:12Speaker 2: dinking and dunking. And once he tried a big boy
- 21:14Speaker 2: NFL play, it just all fell apart. But this is
- 21:17Speaker 2: actually from Boston Sports Talk Radio. That's a crazy thing
- 21:21Speaker 2: where they're basically saying, eating him alive right now for
- 21:24Speaker 2: what happened two nights ago. But to your point, that's
- 21:26Speaker 2: what a great defense does is that it makes QBs
- 21:29Speaker 2: look like mortals. Andrew Destin joining us right now from
- 21:32Speaker 2: the Athletic on the Beacon plumbing hotline to the Seahawks
- 21:36Speaker 2: QB situation. And there are a lot of 12s right
- 21:39Speaker 2: now still biting their fingernails over this Sam Darnold thing
- 21:43Speaker 2: and hip gate. Andrew, as of right now, do you
- 21:47Speaker 2: believe Sam Darnold plays in week three?
- 21:50Speaker 3: I would be shocked if he plays in week or
- 21:52Speaker 3: week two or week three, whichever it's going to be.
- 21:54Speaker 4: I would be shocked if they bring him back.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I don't think he'll play in week two.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:57Speaker 2: But I'm talking the week after.
- 22:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I think regardless, we're not going to see him in October.
- 22:03Speaker 3: And frankly, I'll, you know, I'll be candid here. I
- 22:05Speaker 3: think a lot of that has to deal with the
- 22:06Speaker 3: schedule too. No disrespect to the Arizona Cardinals or the
- 22:10Speaker 3: Washington commanders, but these are not the teams. The Seahawks
- 22:13Speaker 3: are going to need to get through to get to
- 22:15Speaker 3: the Superbowl, let alone the NFC championship game.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Um, It's September.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Why rush Sam back when the schedule has increased, right?
- 22:23Speaker 3: It's 17 games, not 16 games. You already beat the
- 22:26Speaker 3: defending AFC champs. The schedule gets much, much tougher once
- 22:31Speaker 3: you get to October, once you get to November. This
- 22:33Speaker 3: early part of the season, I'm not going to say
- 22:36Speaker 3: that it's a cakewalk, but if you're going to have
- 22:38Speaker 3: your starting quarterback be banged up, better now than December
- 22:41Speaker 3: when you've got to play the Rams twice in three
- 22:43Speaker 3: weeks or four weeks and play the Philadelphia Eagles in
- 22:47Speaker 3: their place on December 19th.
- 22:49Speaker 4: This is the time to sit, Sam. I don't believe
- 22:52Speaker 4: that it's going to be a serious, serious injury.
- 22:54Speaker 3: I take Mike McDonald at his word about the muscle
- 22:56Speaker 3: strain or muscle injury rather than a hip fracture or
- 22:59Speaker 3: anything of that nature. So I don't think we see
- 23:02Speaker 3: him in September. I'm pegging him to come back to
- 23:04Speaker 3: the game against the chargers because that's the first really
- 23:07Speaker 3: tough opponent they're going to have um after those a
- 23:10Speaker 3: couple of more softer opponents i guess you could call
- 23:13Speaker 3: the cardinals and the commanders.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Well until then it is drew lock come on down
- 23:17Speaker 2: and he had one touchdown pass really could have had
- 23:19Speaker 2: two but except for that cooper cub td pass that
- 23:21Speaker 2: was called back so i mean i think andrew how
- 23:24Speaker 2: much did we learn about drew lock to digest what
- 23:28Speaker 2: he can do in the meantime possibly against the cardinals
- 23:32Speaker 2: possibly against the commanders.
- 23:35Speaker 3: I think I'm going to bring this back to a
- 23:37Speaker 3: question that I asked through lockers. I asked him post game,
- 23:40Speaker 3: how has he changed as a starting quarterback since the
- 23:42Speaker 3: last time he was a regular in the NFL?
- 23:44Speaker 4: And he basically pointed to, there's not that pressure.
- 23:48Speaker 3: There's not that urgency to push the ball downfield and
- 23:50Speaker 3: take risks and put the ball up for grabs.
- 23:53Speaker 4: We saw that play out on Wednesday.
- 23:55Speaker 3: I mean, save one pass on third down to start
- 23:58Speaker 3: the second quarter when he threw it down the left
- 23:59Speaker 3: sideline and it was nearly picked off. I believe that
- 24:02Speaker 3: was a pass intended for Cooper Cup. Other than that,
- 24:05Speaker 3: Drew Locke made darn near every decision with the football
- 24:08Speaker 3: was a correct one. I think what we saw is
- 24:10Speaker 3: this is not the same guy who led the NFL
- 24:12Speaker 3: in interceptions with 15 of them in 2020. What we
- 24:16Speaker 3: saw with Drew Locke is the guy who... is in
- 24:18Speaker 3: his ninth year, is more polished as a passer, is
- 24:21Speaker 3: more calm and collected under pressure. I know, you know,
- 24:24Speaker 3: Mike McDonald describes him as a cool and confident leader,
- 24:28Speaker 3: like that quiet, calm confidence about him.
- 24:30Speaker 4: We saw that play out.
- 24:32Speaker 3: I think he has a very solid understanding of the offense.
- 24:35Speaker 3: I think he understands what is needed of him in
- 24:37Speaker 3: this role as the backup quarterback.
- 24:39Speaker 4: And to come in, he's not trying to light the
- 24:41Speaker 4: world on fire.
- 24:42Speaker 3: This is not the same guy who was a second
- 24:43Speaker 3: round pick about a decade ago, who was asked to
- 24:47Speaker 3: really help a struggling Broncos franchise. What they're asking Drew
- 24:50Speaker 3: Locke to do is come in and be the point
- 24:52Speaker 3: guard spread it around all the different options and not try.
- 24:55Speaker 8: To push downfield too much whether exposing defenses try to
- 24:58Speaker 8: expose that remains to be seen but for the time
- 25:01Speaker 8: being I'm expecting a more vanilla conservative offense that's what
- 25:04Speaker 8: we saw on Wednesday and I think that's something that
- 25:06Speaker 8: can be expected moving forward from the Seahawks.
- 25:09Speaker 2: All right Andrew I gotta go there for just a
- 25:11Speaker 2: second are you in the middle of traffic right now Uh,
- 25:15Speaker 2: that I would.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Be, I'm actually right across the street from the, uh,
- 25:17Speaker 3: cracking facility.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Uh, I go to, Oh, we just miss each other.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Like two ships passing in the night.
- 25:24Speaker 6: Oh man.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I was going to say, I'm putting myself on blast
- 25:27Speaker 3: here for all the listeners, but I go to the
- 25:28Speaker 3: 24 hour fitness across the street. So, uh, that's what
- 25:32Speaker 3: I'm doing. I hopped out of the gym so that
- 25:34Speaker 3: I would not disturb the other patrons.
- 25:35Speaker 2: I know where you are. Yeah. I, I, that, that,
- 25:37Speaker 2: and I was going to assume too, it was, uh,
- 25:40Speaker 2: The usual honk if you love Andrew Destin party going
- 25:43Speaker 2: on out there. Andrew Destin joining us here on the
- 25:46Speaker 2: Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Back on the tracks, you brought up
- 25:50Speaker 2: Brian Flurry a little bit here. I mean, I think
- 25:53Speaker 2: a great way to... evaluate what an OC can do
- 25:56Speaker 2: maybe is to manage a game when things fall apart
- 26:00Speaker 2: and to kind of quote Mike Tyson, everyone's got a
- 26:03Speaker 2: plan until you get punched right in the mouth. But
- 26:06Speaker 2: his QB ones out like literally before the seats are
- 26:09Speaker 2: even warm. So what do we learn about Brian Flurry
- 26:11Speaker 2: through week one?
- 26:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think what we've learned most about Brian Fleury
- 26:16Speaker 3: is that he is a guy who's willing to adapt,
- 26:18Speaker 3: and this is not necessarily going to be a generic offense.
- 26:23Speaker 3: And I don't think that was the expectation anyway, right? Like,
- 26:26Speaker 3: he came from San Francisco, which we know under Kyle Shanahan,
- 26:29Speaker 3: that's a very diverse offense that likes to try and
- 26:32Speaker 3: trick the opponent in myriad ways.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I think what we learned about Brian Flurry is that
- 26:37Speaker 4: he's not afraid of this moment.
- 26:38Speaker 3: He's not afraid to call some gutsy plays on a
- 26:42Speaker 3: fourth and one, for instance, the 45-yard touchdown pass to Jackson, Smith,
- 26:45Speaker 3: and Jigba. It would have been easy to go to
- 26:47Speaker 3: the barnyard package and try and sneak A.J. Barner up
- 26:50Speaker 3: the middle. That's not what the Seahawks did. They let
- 26:53Speaker 3: it rip.
- 26:54Speaker 4: So I think what we learned about.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Brian Fleury is that this offense is going to be
- 26:57Speaker 3: very similar to what Clint Kubiak ran last year. I
- 27:01Speaker 3: wrote as much in The Athletic today essentially saying that
- 27:05Speaker 3: personnel wise, it's going to be very similar. A lot
- 27:07Speaker 3: of 12 personnel, a lot of 22, um, a lot
- 27:10Speaker 3: of 11 personnel. It's going to be very similar to
- 27:13Speaker 3: what could be acted last season, um, East West running
- 27:16Speaker 3: with the running backs, right? That's the plan is the
- 27:19Speaker 3: zone blocking scheme up front. So I think it's going
- 27:22Speaker 3: to be on the whole quite similar. What but a
- 27:30Speaker 3: touchdown pass, does Fleury rise to the occasion? Or is
- 27:34Speaker 3: this a guy who, you know, this was his first
- 27:38Speaker 3: game ever calling plays on offense at any level. Will
- 27:41Speaker 3: it eventually the lights get too big for him? Or
- 27:44Speaker 3: is he going to stay, as the players call him, stoic, collected, calm?
- 27:50Speaker 3: Is he going to remain all of those things in
- 27:51Speaker 3: the biggest moments? Uh, that's what I'm most curious about
- 27:54Speaker 3: because I think the scheme itself, the offensive system is
- 27:57Speaker 3: more than adequate for the Seahawks to be a Superbowl contender.
- 28:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:00Speaker 2: For all this talk that we heard that he's going to,
- 28:02Speaker 2: you know, involve tight ends, you know, they're all, they're
- 28:04Speaker 2: a big part of the package here. I mean, AJ
- 28:06Speaker 2: Barner had two catches for 13 yards and, you know, granny,
- 28:10Speaker 2: you know, Brian Flurry is finding his sea legs as
- 28:13Speaker 2: far as how he's running things. But were you surprised
- 28:15Speaker 2: as far as AJ Barner's numbers?
- 28:19Speaker 4: Yes and no.
- 28:20Speaker 3: I think it's more so a byproduct of they only
- 28:23Speaker 3: ran 48 plays on offense and half of those were
- 28:25Speaker 3: running plays. So you look at it, what was it?
- 28:27Speaker 3: 18 of 26 for 18 of 26 for Drew Locke.
- 28:32Speaker 3: So he went to Barner, you know, about 10, 15%
- 28:36Speaker 3: of the time. That's fairly in line with what Sam
- 28:39Speaker 3: Darnold did last year. It was just more frequently that
- 28:41Speaker 3: Darnold was racking up 280 passing yards or 300. It
- 28:44Speaker 3: was just a low scoring offense, not an offensive game.
- 28:47Speaker 3: That being said, I do think they're going to try
- 28:51Speaker 3: and incorporate Barner more frequently. I think this is just
- 28:54Speaker 3: a byproduct of what is an issue for this offense.
- 28:58Speaker 4: And it's not a bad issue to have necessarily.
- 29:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 29:02Speaker 3: Last year, it was so heavy on Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 29:05Speaker 3: It was so dependent on boom or bust. If they're
- 29:08Speaker 3: getting it to Smith and Jigba, the offense is moving.
- 29:10Speaker 4: If not, well, it kind of stagnates a little bit.
- 29:13Speaker 3: So I think that moving forward, yes, Brian Flory would
- 29:17Speaker 3: like to get the Titans more involved, would like to
- 29:19Speaker 3: get Cooper Cupp more involved, to throw the deep balls
- 29:22Speaker 3: to Rashid Shaheed. But the offense has a tendency to
- 29:26Speaker 3: lean back on what's comfortable and what works. And we
- 29:28Speaker 3: saw that with Jackson Smith and Jigba.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Again, the party here for Andrew Destin continues. Honk if
- 29:33Speaker 2: you love Andrew out there as he joins us on
- 29:35Speaker 2: the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. This is a great soundtrack here
- 29:38Speaker 2: for this conversation, my man. You mentioned how things are
- 29:43Speaker 2: going to get a little bit more, I think, fluid
- 29:46Speaker 2: with how this offense will run things i go back
- 29:49Speaker 2: here to the run game because canines out of the
- 29:51Speaker 2: picture charbonnet's not a big piece of this at all
- 29:54Speaker 2: till he's finally healthy but jadarian price they got him
- 29:57Speaker 2: out of the mothballs so to speak after not running
- 30:00Speaker 2: a football you know logistically for for 10 months in
- 30:04Speaker 2: game action and he gets 10 carries 52 yards do
- 30:09Speaker 2: you think that he gets the rock more in week two.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I think absolutely.
- 30:14Speaker 3: I'm trying my best to get away from somebody who
- 30:16Speaker 3: clearly has no idea.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Please don't. Please don't.
- 30:19Speaker 6: It's awesome.
- 30:19Speaker 2: It's awesome.
- 30:21Speaker 3: No, this is beyond obnoxious. No, I think Jadarian Price
- 30:25Speaker 3: is absolutely... I'm running outside of the parking garage. No,
- 30:29Speaker 3: I think Jadarian Price is going to get more reps,
- 30:31Speaker 3: but it's going to come in time. I don't expect
- 30:34Speaker 3: him to all of a sudden become the bell cow
- 30:36Speaker 3: who's getting 20, 25 carries a night consistently. I think
- 30:41Speaker 3: what's much more likely is this is a guy who,
- 30:43Speaker 3: as he continues to learn the offense, as he continues
- 30:46Speaker 3: to get more and more time with the playbook, it's
- 30:49Speaker 3: going to be okay. Now you can start to incorporate
- 30:52Speaker 3: them on third downs. Now you can start to incorporate
- 30:54Speaker 3: them on those short yardage package situations. It's going to
- 30:57Speaker 3: come in time, but I don't think it's as easy
- 31:00Speaker 3: or apples to apples to say, Oh, well, because he
- 31:03Speaker 3: had a good first game. Now we're going to make
- 31:05Speaker 3: the rookie, the guy, and we're going to get them
- 31:08Speaker 3: 115 rushing yards game. I don't think that's going to happen.
- 31:12Speaker 3: I think they really liked George Lonnie. I think they
- 31:14Speaker 3: really liked Zach Charbonnet whenever he's healthy. So yeah, Jerry
- 31:17Speaker 3: and price immensely talented. Um, this is a guy who
- 31:20Speaker 3: probably starts at 115 colleges across the country.
- 31:24Speaker 4: The issue was just, he.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Went to Notre Dame and coupled with Jeremiah love. Um,
- 31:30Speaker 3: I thought he really impressed. I thought Mike McDonald's really
- 31:32Speaker 3: pleased with him. I think the Seahawks at large were
- 31:35Speaker 3: really pleased with the offense in terms of their ability
- 31:37Speaker 3: to run the ball.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Um, on Wednesday price.
- 31:41Speaker 3: So I'm not expecting that carry count to increase anytime soon.
- 31:47Speaker 3: And it really wouldn't surprise me if he kind of
- 31:49Speaker 3: hangs around that 10 to 12 carries per game number
- 31:52Speaker 3: for the whole season. Because, honestly, that's the trajectory of
- 31:55Speaker 3: the NFL. These teams do not like to use just
- 31:58Speaker 3: one running back. The days of Sean Alexander have long
- 32:02Speaker 3: since passed us by. The Marshawn Lynch's of the world,
- 32:04Speaker 3: where they're getting 25 carries a game. I don't think
- 32:07Speaker 3: we're going to see that with Price. And there's just
- 32:09Speaker 3: so many different reasons to it, as I outlined.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Hey, very quick before we cut you loose, Andrew. Rams
- 32:13Speaker 2: and Niners last night. I think we can put the
- 32:16Speaker 2: theory to bed that you need to fly in about
- 32:19Speaker 2: five hours before a game to play in Australia. I mean,
- 32:21Speaker 2: I guess that's just me. Jet lag still exists here.
- 32:24Speaker 2: But did that game tell us more about the Rams
- 32:27Speaker 2: being underwhelming or San Francisco as a team that we
- 32:31Speaker 2: got to take even more seriously?
- 32:33Speaker 3: I don't know if I should be telling listeners this,
- 32:35Speaker 3: but I did grow up in the Bay Area. I
- 32:38Speaker 3: did grow up a fan of the 49ers.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Please don't attack me.
- 32:42Speaker 3: I think what it told us, though, is that the 49ers,
- 32:44Speaker 3: this is a team to be taken seriously as long
- 32:46Speaker 3: as that roster stays healthy. I mean, I think you
- 32:49Speaker 3: have to tip in getting all the way to the
- 32:53Speaker 3: NFC wildcard rounds, basically with half of a roster, with
- 32:57Speaker 3: no Nick Bosa, with no Fred Warner, without your top
- 33:00Speaker 3: receiving threat in Brandon Ayuk, who essentially quit on the team.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I think what we're seeing now is this is a
- 33:06Speaker 3: Niners team that reloaded.
- 33:07Speaker 4: They are much healthier.
- 33:08Speaker 3: And listen, I said this actually to my father on
- 33:11Speaker 3: the phone the other day, is that I look at
- 33:12Speaker 3: the NFC website, and it is probably the three best
- 33:15Speaker 3: teams in the NFL, however you want to slice it.
- 33:18Speaker 3: The Seahawks have the best defense. The Rams might have
- 33:21Speaker 3: the most top-heavy roster. And I think the Niners have
- 33:24Speaker 3: the best offensive coach in the NFL. I just think
- 33:27Speaker 3: so highly of Kyle Shanahan and the system that he
- 33:29Speaker 3: has in place there in San Francisco.
- 33:30Speaker 4: And I think that.
- 33:32Speaker 3: If they can stay healthy, if this roster that they
- 33:34Speaker 3: fielded for week one can go the distance or at
- 33:37Speaker 3: least go for much of the season, boy, that all
- 33:40Speaker 3: of a sudden becomes a very dangerous 49ers team for
- 33:43Speaker 3: the Seahawks to have to reckon with this season.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Hey, we all came from somewhere. Look at the Kosloff family, right?
- 33:48Speaker 2: So you are forgiven. We appreciate you, Andrew. Hey, thanks.
- 33:53Speaker 2: Great stuff. We're going to get you back on down
- 33:55Speaker 2: the road. But in the meantime, go enjoy some 10
- 33:58Speaker 2: days off here and finally some peace and quiet with
- 34:01Speaker 2: those horns out of the way.
- 34:03Speaker 9: No problem.
- 34:04Speaker 4: This is my one. Mike, thanks so much for having
- 34:05Speaker 4: me on. I will catch you.
- 34:07Speaker 2: You betcha. Thank you very much. Andrew Destin joining us
- 34:09Speaker 2: here from The Athletic. Up next, we check in from
- 34:13Speaker 2: Kraken rookie camp, Oscar Fisker-Molgaard. Is it NHL roster or
- 34:18Speaker 2: bust for him? That chat's up next here on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 34:28Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Home for the NFL.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Sports Radio 93.3, KJR FM.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Greg's back next week. Mike Benton in his chair. In
- 34:39Speaker 2: the meantime, big thanks again to Andrew Destin of The
- 34:42Speaker 2: Athletic for joining us. And again, 49451, what's your level
- 34:46Speaker 2: of concern with Sam Darnold? Do you need Sam Darnold
- 34:50Speaker 2: back by the end of September? 49451 Tacoma Dosh text line. Talkbacks,
- 34:54Speaker 2: by the way, via the iHeartRadio app. But the attention
- 34:57Speaker 2: right now turns about 10 minutes north of us here
- 35:00Speaker 2: to Kraken Community Iceplex. Training camp not officially underway, but
- 35:05Speaker 2: we're pretty much already there. Rookie camp underway today. And
- 35:11Speaker 2: I mentioned one word earlier about how much this can
- 35:15Speaker 2: really define, I think, a big turning point for the Kraken.
- 35:19Speaker 2: and the long-term future for what they have on this roster.
- 35:23Speaker 2: And that word's opportunity. Because we could be seeing as
- 35:27Speaker 2: maybe as much as eight players, all forwards, 23 years
- 35:32Speaker 2: of age or younger, make this roster. And in some cases,
- 35:37Speaker 2: it really puts a spotlight here on a summer where
- 35:40Speaker 2: we heard the word aggressive. to overturn this roster with
- 35:44Speaker 2: proven talent. Unfortunately, swinging a miss on Jason Robertson. Unfortunately,
- 35:49Speaker 2: we heard they were in for Robert Thomas, swinging a
- 35:51Speaker 2: miss on that one, too. The Panarin thing was even
- 35:55Speaker 2: months before that. So, you know, I think going back
- 36:00Speaker 2: here to the Philip Grubauer situation and how much he
- 36:02Speaker 2: changed his game because of solutions a team found internally
- 36:06Speaker 2: with a new goaltending coach who went to Coachella Valley.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Nothing says solutions sometimes like looking for those inside to
- 36:14Speaker 2: solve your own problems. And for what is regarded right
- 36:18Speaker 2: now as one of the top pipelines in the NHL,
- 36:20Speaker 2: they've got their work cut out for them here for
- 36:22Speaker 2: this season. But Berkley Catton, can he be a 70-
- 36:26Speaker 2: to 80-point guy down the road? Can Oscar Fisker-Mulgaard break
- 36:30Speaker 2: through on this roster? We'll talk to him in a moment.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Can Shane Wright, for all the drama we've seen around
- 36:37Speaker 2: his contract situation, playing time, can there be a rebirth
- 36:40Speaker 2: with him? As he's going to report here, according to
- 36:44Speaker 2: his agent for training camp, just this next week. Can
- 36:48Speaker 2: Matty Beneers, who is still in that age range, also
- 36:51Speaker 2: go next level and hit maybe 70 points? A lot
- 36:54Speaker 2: of questions around this team right now. But again, the
- 36:56Speaker 2: word opportunity is front and center with the young guys
- 37:00Speaker 2: who are coming in. And for them, the road begins
- 37:03Speaker 2: today at rookie camp up in the Northgate section here
- 37:06Speaker 2: of Seattle. I talked with one of those guys who
- 37:09Speaker 2: could be getting a lot of opportunity. The name is
- 37:12Speaker 2: Oscar Fisker-Molgaard. Get used to that name. Oscar Fisker-Molgaard. Could
- 37:18Speaker 2: it be NHL or bus for him to make this
- 37:20Speaker 2: roster in camp? Where is he at right now for
- 37:24Speaker 2: his game? Is camp underway with rookie campsite? He's a
- 37:28Speaker 2: big part of this. Here's our chat with him back
- 37:31Speaker 2: up at KCI.
- 37:32Speaker 10: First off, great to see you back once again. You're
- 37:34Speaker 10: looking good. Tell us more about the impact of summer
- 37:36Speaker 10: and how much that helped out your game as well.
- 37:38Speaker 11: I mean, obviously, summer is important in two ways. I mean,
- 37:42Speaker 11: both physically, but also mentally, you know, kind of, you know,
- 37:46Speaker 11: get away from hockey a little bit. I think that's healthy,
- 37:48Speaker 11: at least for me it is. So, you know, get home,
- 37:51Speaker 11: get to spend some time with friends and family, you know,
- 37:53Speaker 11: something that you can't really do in season. So, you know,
- 37:57Speaker 11: just happy to be back home, but also, you know...
- 38:00Speaker 11: Really excited to be playing some hockey again. I'm looking
- 38:02Speaker 11: forward to these games this weekend.
- 38:03Speaker 10: Now, when we educate the new fans coming into the
- 38:06Speaker 10: building here, because we still have new fans coming in,
- 38:08Speaker 10: it feels like even into year six as well, there's
- 38:11Speaker 10: a way to explain all this where it kind of
- 38:12Speaker 10: has that, a little bit of a similarity of like
- 38:15Speaker 10: with the Seahawks too, with minicamp and main camp as well.
- 38:18Speaker 10: On the rookie camp side, the goal of rookie camp,
- 38:21Speaker 10: if you can lay this back out, you've done this before,
- 38:23Speaker 10: but this plus also two games in Abbotsford, ultimately what's
- 38:27Speaker 10: the end goal for you?
- 38:28Speaker 11: I mean, obviously, you know, the ultimate goal is always
- 38:31Speaker 11: to be able to make the team. I mean, I
- 38:34Speaker 11: feel good this year and obviously I'm happy to be
- 38:36Speaker 11: able to be in these two games, you know, kind
- 38:38Speaker 11: of get some, you know, game-like situations and, you know,
- 38:42Speaker 11: I can't be short this year. So you got to
- 38:44Speaker 11: be ready off the hop. That's what I'm aiming to do.
- 38:48Speaker 11: You're always just trying to prove yourself to yourself and
- 38:52Speaker 11: to others and go out there and do your best.
- 38:55Speaker 11: That's all you can do.
- 38:56Speaker 10: It's a precursor to main training camp where you'll be
- 38:59Speaker 10: in with a bunch of NHL veterans. That's when they
- 39:01Speaker 10: finally pop into things. It feels like it really gets
- 39:04Speaker 10: ramped up here. With those two games at Abbotsford, they've
- 39:08Speaker 10: got an American League team. You've been to the American
- 39:10Speaker 10: League as well. Does it give you an advantage as
- 39:12Speaker 10: far as where you're going to play to understand at
- 39:16Speaker 10: least the environment of what you're going to be dealing
- 39:17Speaker 10: with as well?
- 39:19Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, I guess so. Again, you know, I
- 39:22Speaker 11: know a lot of the guys we're going to play against.
- 39:24Speaker 11: I've played with a bunch of the guys who I'll
- 39:25Speaker 11: be playing with this weekend as well. I feel like
- 39:28Speaker 11: it's a good tournament for the boys to also get together. Again,
- 39:32Speaker 11: for me, I see it as a good opportunity to
- 39:35Speaker 11: get going, really. I haven't played a game in a while,
- 39:38Speaker 11: so just to be able to get out there and
- 39:41Speaker 11: be physical, get those game-like situations in your system again. Again,
- 39:47Speaker 11: something that you... yeah, can bring into main camp as well.
- 39:51Speaker 11: That's hopefully going to give you an advantage.
- 39:53Speaker 10: Oscar Fisker-Molgar joining us here from rookie camp at Kraken
- 39:57Speaker 10: Community Iceplex. Before all this began, you have informal skates
- 40:02Speaker 10: where the veterans usually go out with each other, the rookies,
- 40:06Speaker 10: guys trying to move up the pipeline, go out as
- 40:07Speaker 10: well with each other. The difference in how those feel
- 40:11Speaker 10: versus what you're going to be fed in rookie camp
- 40:14Speaker 10: and also in main training camp, what's the difference?
- 40:17Speaker 11: I mean, obviously, you know, these informal skates, you know,
- 40:19Speaker 11: guys are coming in. Some guys might have been skating
- 40:21Speaker 11: all summer, some guys maybe not. So, you know, it's
- 40:24Speaker 11: just a good way to get here and, you know,
- 40:26Speaker 11: go out there, have some fun, you know, get some,
- 40:28Speaker 11: you know, get some puck touches, just kind of get
- 40:31Speaker 11: the system going a little bit. And then obviously, you know,
- 40:34Speaker 11: once main camp starts, you know, and rookie camp also,
- 40:36Speaker 11: you know, it's for real again, you know, we're all teammates,
- 40:39Speaker 11: but at the same time, we're all, you know, fighting
- 40:41Speaker 11: for the same spot. So, It can be a special
- 40:47Speaker 11: kind of situation, but again, it's a lot of fun.
- 40:49Speaker 11: We're all here to eventually play for the Kraken, so
- 40:53Speaker 11: there's just a few spots available. So you're just trying
- 40:56Speaker 11: to do your best, and it'll be fun to get
- 40:59Speaker 11: out there and battle again.
- 41:01Speaker 10: That's where the word compete is. Extremely relevant. Doesn't matter where,
- 41:05Speaker 10: doesn't matter when. when you look back from this summer,
- 41:08Speaker 10: we hear a lot about players who wanted to make
- 41:11Speaker 10: the most of it and guys may be on different tracks.
- 41:13Speaker 10: Some might want to refine their skillset. Some might want
- 41:17Speaker 10: to refine their conditioning for you. Where did the summer
- 41:23Speaker 10: lend itself the biggest advantage for you as far as
- 41:26Speaker 10: where you're at now than say versus five months ago?
- 41:29Speaker 11: I mean, I think the biggest thing for me is,
- 41:31Speaker 11: is probably, uh, physically, um, I've been really, the past
- 41:35Speaker 11: two summers, I've had time to really work on getting
- 41:37Speaker 11: bigger and stronger. You know, this is a tough, both
- 41:41Speaker 11: the AHL and the NHL, it's a tough, two tough
- 41:43Speaker 11: leagues to play in, really physical compared to back home
- 41:46Speaker 11: in Europe. So, you know, you've got to be ready
- 41:49Speaker 11: for that. And then again, it's a lot of games.
- 41:51Speaker 11: So you've got to be able to perform every night.
- 41:53Speaker 4: And that's what it's all about.
- 41:55Speaker 11: So, you know, just the physical aspect of the game
- 41:57Speaker 11: has been they're really important to me. So, you know,
- 42:00Speaker 11: a lot of working out and hopefully that's something I can,
- 42:02Speaker 11: you know, bring onto the ice as well.
- 42:04Speaker 10: What was your goal?
- 42:06Speaker 2: I believe he said 180 pounds was his goal and
- 42:09Speaker 2: he's just right about there with his conditioning. So Oscar
- 42:12Speaker 2: Fisker-Mulgaard got a taste last year of NHL play and
- 42:15Speaker 2: he's a player who's got smarts over brawn, a playmaker element,
- 42:19Speaker 2: as we mentioned earlier as well in our conversation, in
- 42:22Speaker 2: all situations kind of guy. So It's pretty easy here
- 42:25Speaker 2: to say that he could crack this lineup based on
- 42:27Speaker 2: how many spots are open here for young guys. He
- 42:30Speaker 2: feels ready. All that's left now is the prove-it phase,
- 42:34Speaker 2: which is a few weeks of track here to stand out,
- 42:37Speaker 2: where they've got some established centers already, top to bottom,
- 42:41Speaker 2: Matty Beneers, Chandler Stevenson. Shane Wright, et cetera, Freddie Gaudreau.
- 42:46Speaker 2: So where does Oscar Fisker-Mulgaard fit in? Time will certainly tell,
- 42:50Speaker 2: but many are saying he's got a great, and I
- 42:53Speaker 2: mean great, chance here to crack this lineup. for the
- 42:56Speaker 2: Kraken for this next season, beginning on night number one
- 43:00Speaker 2: on October 1. More of that conversation, by the way,
- 43:02Speaker 2: you can find that podcast via the Kraken Audio Network
- 43:04Speaker 2: on the iHeartRadio app. Quick break here, high school football. Again,
- 43:08Speaker 2: the spotlight back on that. We crank up the Friday
- 43:10Speaker 2: night lights. Up next on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 43:16Speaker 1: Now, from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KJR
- 43:20Speaker 1: FM Sports Headlines.
- 43:22Speaker 2: All brought to you by Frostbrew Coors Light, as cold
- 43:24Speaker 2: as the Rockies. The latest on Sam Darnold's hip, and
- 43:28Speaker 2: the status update is as clear as mud. Mike McDonald
- 43:32Speaker 2: saying Thursday afternoon the news remains positive, though, saying there
- 43:36Speaker 2: is no fracture. However, he did say the team will
- 43:38Speaker 2: need more time before deciding whether Darnold might have to
- 43:41Speaker 2: miss some games. FYI, the Seahawks won't play again until...
- 43:46Speaker 2: the 20th at Arizona, but looks like Drew Locke will
- 43:49Speaker 2: be starting that game after that massive TBD. Yesterday, Julio,
- 43:53Speaker 2: big three run homer. Mariners beat the Rangers 4-3 for
- 43:57Speaker 2: what it's worth. M's are still six games back in
- 44:00Speaker 2: the ALS, five games back in the wild card, and
- 44:03Speaker 2: time is a ticking time. Mariners off to Sacramento to
- 44:06Speaker 2: face the A's for a three-game series. And we revisit
- 44:10Speaker 2: again the pitching matchup where things really fell apart from
- 44:13Speaker 2: last Saturday. George Kirby on the mound for the Mariners.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Jeffrey Springs, who won, hit them through six innings last weekend.
- 44:21Speaker 2: He's back on the bump here for... the A's. Niners
- 44:25Speaker 2: beat the Rams in Melbourne 27-7 yesterday. Niners host the
- 44:30Speaker 2: Dolphins in Week 2. Rams get the Giants and the
- 44:33Speaker 2: Huskies tomorrow take on Utah State at 1230. You can
- 44:36Speaker 2: hear that game right here on 93.3 KJR FM. Elyse Woodward,
- 44:41Speaker 2: Cam Cleland, Dave Softy, Mauler, and the whole gang will
- 44:44Speaker 2: be there for you. The Huskies looking to go 2-0
- 44:48Speaker 2: after beating Washington State in the Apple Cup last week.
- 44:51Speaker 2: On to the show we go. All right, because this
- 44:59Speaker 2: is Greg Bell's chair. He is on an airplane right
- 45:02Speaker 2: now amidst the 10 days off the Seahawks have until
- 45:06Speaker 2: they get back out of here for week two. This
- 45:08Speaker 2: is still very much a passion for Greg amidst this
- 45:12Speaker 2: football Friday, we call it. And we go as deep
- 45:16Speaker 2: into the weeds as we can get here, even for
- 45:18Speaker 2: the high school football fun of it, because this is
- 45:21Speaker 2: the next generation of football. brewing right here in the
- 45:24Speaker 2: Pacific Northwest. And the minds behind their development are ever
- 45:28Speaker 2: so important. It deals with how coaches prepare college-ready players
- 45:33Speaker 2: and even have players who are as young as sophomores
- 45:35Speaker 2: who are still learning to swim in the deep end,
- 45:39Speaker 2: so to speak, without leadership. And that's important. So Greg's
- 45:42Speaker 2: very much in tune with this. I mean, I do
- 45:44Speaker 2: a lot of work as well with the state championship game.
- 45:47Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to also jumping on the TV side
- 45:49Speaker 2: here for tonight locally for a game that will air
- 45:53Speaker 2: On TV for Snohomish and Glacier Peak. But it is
- 45:56Speaker 2: a pageantry of the lights that shine bright on Friday nights.
- 46:01Speaker 2: But yet one game that's going to really stand out
- 46:03Speaker 2: won't be played tonight. It'll be played tomorrow. Liberty and Issaquah.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Learn those two names if you're not already a part
- 46:13Speaker 2: of those programs. Tomorrow night at 7 p.m. One's a
- 46:16Speaker 2: 3A team. The other is a 4A team. We're going
- 46:20Speaker 2: to dive into the weeds with this right now as
- 46:22Speaker 2: joining us on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline here for this
- 46:25Speaker 2: high school football spotlight. This is Steve Valich, head coach
- 46:31Speaker 2: on the Liberty side, three decades at the helm. Steve, hello.
- 46:35Speaker 6: Good morning.
- 46:35Speaker 9: How are you?
- 46:37Speaker 2: Good morning. Thanks for having me on. Hey, great to
- 46:39Speaker 2: talk with you here. I'm going to just jump in
- 46:41Speaker 2: with your resume here. When you commit to something, I
- 46:45Speaker 2: don't care whether it's football. I don't care whether it's
- 46:49Speaker 2: in marketing. I don't care whether it's selling insurance, business,
- 46:53Speaker 2: you're flying an airplane. 28 straight seasons really tells a
- 46:57Speaker 2: lot about, A, doing your job the right way, and, B,
- 47:03Speaker 2: committing to it and the people that you affect year
- 47:06Speaker 2: after year. So for doing this now for your 28th
- 47:09Speaker 2: season at Liberty, it's a very, very incredible story. But
- 47:14Speaker 2: I think to you, first off, what's changed about high
- 47:17Speaker 2: school football going back into the 90s versus now?
- 47:22Speaker 12: You know, it's interesting that you ask that. I think
- 47:26Speaker 12: whether it was 28 years ago or this year, you know,
- 47:30Speaker 12: teenage boys ages 14 to 18 are basically the same.
- 47:34Speaker 12: There's different issues they got to deal with. We never
- 47:39Speaker 12: had social media back when I took over in 1999.
- 47:42Speaker 12: But I'd say ages 14 to 18, there's never a
- 47:46Speaker 12: more important time or more formative time in your life
- 47:48Speaker 12: to have people outside of your parents who can help
- 47:52Speaker 12: speak into your life and help you live up. So
- 47:56Speaker 12: a lot has changed, but a lot has stayed the same.
- 47:59Speaker 2: I'm really curious about the social media component of this.
- 48:03Speaker 2: I'm so glad you opened the door for it because,
- 48:05Speaker 2: I mean, Steve, I remember back when I was a
- 48:07Speaker 2: high school student in the late 90s, I mean, the
- 48:10Speaker 2: ultimate status symbol besides maybe a car was, you know,
- 48:13Speaker 2: maybe like your very first cell phone. We see kids
- 48:16Speaker 2: these days now who are I mean, as young as 10, 11,
- 48:20Speaker 2: 12 years of age, they've got a handheld device that
- 48:23Speaker 2: you can easily communicate with. And then we get into
- 48:25Speaker 2: the social media weeds of this, not just from a
- 48:28Speaker 2: mental health thing, but also just from a time consumption
- 48:32Speaker 2: and an attention span thing. So I think for you.
- 48:36Speaker 2: I heard this one time where a coach said, no
- 48:39Speaker 2: phones that walk through, period. No phones that walk through.
- 48:42Speaker 2: I've heard stories of other coaches for other sports, and
- 48:46Speaker 2: I come from just on the professional working side, deep
- 48:49Speaker 2: into the hockey weeds of this. There are times where
- 48:53Speaker 2: players have to surrender their phones on the bus because
- 48:56Speaker 2: it's about a team-building component and just getting to know
- 48:58Speaker 2: the guy that's sitting right by you here. So how
- 49:01Speaker 2: does that change maybe, I think, in this day and age?
- 49:03Speaker 2: with how you learn, with how players operate, I think, socially, intellectually,
- 49:11Speaker 2: how they communicate, and how you set those standards?
- 49:14Speaker 12: Well, number one, we're not a punitive program, but we
- 49:17Speaker 12: have a rule. If you have your cell phone out
- 49:19Speaker 12: at a football activity, it's 500 push-ups. And, you know,
- 49:26Speaker 12: the reason is that, you know, cell phones are great
- 49:30Speaker 12: and staying connected is great, but nothing's ever going to
- 49:32Speaker 12: replace eyeball to eyeball in person and learning how to
- 49:36Speaker 12: do that. And I think, you know, one of our
- 49:39Speaker 12: I would love it if we became the best in
- 49:41Speaker 12: the world at team building and helping our athletes develop friendships.
- 49:47Speaker 12: And I, that's going to always happen. Eyeball to eyeball
- 49:50Speaker 12: face to face in person. So I, you know, I
- 49:54Speaker 12: think there's a lot of battles that I can fight. Um,
- 49:57Speaker 12: fighting a social media battle is not something I can,
- 50:00Speaker 12: but I think what we can do with our kids
- 50:02Speaker 12: is help them experience what it, what it's like to
- 50:04Speaker 12: have real relationships that, um, That happened in person.
- 50:09Speaker 2: When's the last time you had to give a guy
- 50:11Speaker 2: 500 push-ups?
- 50:13Speaker 12: Oh, we had one last year at team camp.
- 50:17Speaker 4: I think he was injured, so he.
- 50:18Speaker 12: Had to do 500 sit-ups or something like that.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Nothing says conditioning just like getting after it no matter
- 50:24Speaker 2: what here. Joining us again, Steve Vallich in the Beacon
- 50:27Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline. He is the head coach of Liberty, and again,
- 50:29Speaker 2: they'll face us tomorrow night as part of our high
- 50:32Speaker 2: school football spotlight right here at this hour right now
- 50:35Speaker 2: at this very moment on 93.3 KJRFM. I'm also very,
- 50:40Speaker 2: very curious about changes to even coaching style versus back
- 50:44Speaker 2: in the day, where at some points you had coaches
- 50:47Speaker 2: who were very much all in on, I hate using
- 50:52Speaker 2: the word here, but kind of like a dictator type
- 50:55Speaker 2: of style where it's my way or the highway. But
- 50:58Speaker 2: we hear more and more about stories these days of
- 51:00Speaker 2: coaches who are trying to find a way to relate
- 51:03Speaker 2: to the players that They are coaching, and it's not
- 51:06Speaker 2: so much of a softening of the stance as far
- 51:09Speaker 2: as the endgame. It's just finding a way to get
- 51:12Speaker 2: them to respond. So to you, what worked then that
- 51:16Speaker 2: wouldn't work now as far as coaching philosophy?
- 51:20Speaker 12: Well, I think there's so much more access to... good
- 51:25Speaker 12: drills and everything that's out there. You know, it used
- 51:28Speaker 12: to be kind of secrets and maybe you'd connect with
- 51:30Speaker 12: a college coach or the high school coach and get
- 51:32Speaker 12: good drills or go to a clinic. So there's a
- 51:34Speaker 12: lot of good drills out there. And I, you know,
- 51:37Speaker 12: obviously I think I have a friend in coaching who
- 51:40Speaker 12: says a good rep is better than a bad rep
- 51:44Speaker 12: is better than a good stand. Meaning a bad repetition
- 51:47Speaker 12: is better than standing around. So, you know, we try
- 51:50Speaker 12: to maximize the number of repetitions we get. I think
- 51:54Speaker 12: all good programs do that. You try to have drills
- 51:59Speaker 12: that the game is the drill and the drill is
- 52:01Speaker 12: the game. So do things that are relevant and that
- 52:04Speaker 12: you're going to do on a Friday night in a competition.
- 52:06Speaker 12: And then I think we really try to be super
- 52:11Speaker 12: organized and efficient with our time so that the time
- 52:15Speaker 12: that we have the kids out there, that we're maximizing it.
- 52:19Speaker 12: And usually... You know, longer practice doesn't mean better practice.
- 52:24Speaker 12: You know, we want to have better practices. And if
- 52:26Speaker 12: it's an hour and 50 minutes like it was for
- 52:28Speaker 12: us yesterday, then maximize that time and make it as
- 52:33Speaker 12: impactful as possible.
- 52:34Speaker 2: Let's get into the definition of what's called cross-district play,
- 52:38Speaker 2: and it revolves around a 3A team facing a 4A team,
- 52:42Speaker 2: and there's some truth to how this works, and there's
- 52:46Speaker 2: some fiction or misnomers as far as what it represents.
- 52:50Speaker 2: For the deep-minded folks in football, I mean, it's pretty self-explanatory,
- 52:53Speaker 2: but for someone who's just curiously getting into this and
- 52:56Speaker 2: learning about what this matchup means, it's a special matchup,
- 52:59Speaker 2: by the way. Why is that special, and how does
- 53:01Speaker 2: that add to the flavor of tonight to you?
- 53:05Speaker 12: Well, you know, our kids, you know, the kids at
- 53:08Speaker 12: Issaquah High School and Liberty High School, they grew up
- 53:10Speaker 12: in the same community. They competed in youth sports together.
- 53:13Speaker 12: They know each other. That makes it special. You know,
- 53:17Speaker 12: Josh Brookshire and I are good friends. We've connected through
- 53:20Speaker 12: something called the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and have coached
- 53:23Speaker 12: a camp together there and done stuff together. So I
- 53:26Speaker 12: think it's, you know, it is, you know, I don't know,
- 53:30Speaker 12: the rivalry or whatever. I always think, you know, my parents,
- 53:33Speaker 12: fiercest competitions as a kid growing up were usually with
- 53:36Speaker 12: my best friend like that's who you fought the most
- 53:39Speaker 12: against and you battled and then you hug it up
- 53:42Speaker 12: at the end and you're still friends and I think
- 53:45Speaker 12: you know that's the essence of tonight and I've done
- 53:48Speaker 12: this for so long this is year 39 overall and
- 53:52Speaker 12: I don't think of the opponent as our enemy I
- 53:54Speaker 12: mean if we don't have Issaquah we don't.
- 53:55Speaker 4: Have a game and.
- 53:57Speaker 12: So I love high school football I love what it
- 54:00Speaker 12: teaches the athletes we have I love the life lessons
- 54:04Speaker 12: that are all a part of it. And I think
- 54:07Speaker 12: sometimes we can, you know, the rivalry is great, and
- 54:10Speaker 12: we're going to battle fiercely. But I think the beauty
- 54:13Speaker 12: of a game like this is at the end of it,
- 54:15Speaker 12: I guarantee you, Josh and I are going to hug
- 54:17Speaker 12: it up, wish each other the best, and, you know,
- 54:21Speaker 12: move forward.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Well, Bregan rides in the golf course for the next time, right?
- 54:25Speaker 11: Sure.
- 54:26Speaker 12: Well, he's probably a better golfer than I am.
- 54:28Speaker 6: Well, not probably.
- 54:29Speaker 12: I can guarantee you without even seeing him play.
- 54:31Speaker 4: So, yeah.
- 54:33Speaker 2: What's the lowest that you've shot? What's the lowest that
- 54:35Speaker 2: he's shot? You know what?
- 54:38Speaker 12: There's certain things I don't want to confess on air.
- 54:41Speaker 12: It's got to remain. That'll remain. I don't want to
- 54:45Speaker 12: ruin all my credibility.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Fair enough. All good. All good. The matchup tomorrow night,
- 54:50Speaker 2: how does Liberty view Issaquah?
- 54:53Speaker 12: They always play us well. We played the last couple years,
- 54:57Speaker 12: and it's just a physical matchup. They defend us well.
- 55:01Speaker 12: Two years ago, they beat us by a touchdown. Last year,
- 55:05Speaker 12: we beat them by two. So it's always a good matchup,
- 55:09Speaker 12: always competitive. We both had tough openers. We lost to Tumwater.
- 55:15Speaker 12: They lost to a really good Eastmont team. So, you know,
- 55:18Speaker 12: we're both looking to get back in the win column.
- 55:22Speaker 2: Finally here, give me your biggest, give me your baddest,
- 55:25Speaker 2: give me your brightest one guy from Liberty or one
- 55:29Speaker 2: position group that somebody needs to watch tomorrow night.
- 55:35Speaker 12: Watch our defense. Our defense will fly around. Our secondary,
- 55:40Speaker 12: our linebackers up front. I'm just excited. Our kids, the
- 55:46Speaker 12: three words they wanted to have defined them were that they,
- 55:49Speaker 12: when you watch, you know, after a game, you said, man,
- 55:51Speaker 12: they're fast, they're physical, and they're disciplined. And what I
- 55:55Speaker 12: love about the, you know, the measurements that they've selected,
- 55:59Speaker 12: that you can watch film, you can watch a team play,
- 56:01Speaker 12: and you can say, check, check, check, or you can say,
- 56:04Speaker 12: you know, I don't know. So look for us to
- 56:07Speaker 12: be fast, physical, and disciplined. That would be the ultimate
- 56:10Speaker 12: for us in terms of how to evaluate our performance
- 56:14Speaker 12: tomorrow night.
- 56:15Speaker 2: Here's to great theater. Here's to what you face against Josh.
- 56:18Speaker 2: And here's to fun bragging rights how it falls after
- 56:22Speaker 2: tomorrow evening here. But Steve, appreciate your time. Thank you.
- 56:25Speaker 2: And appreciate you also for joining us as well.
- 56:28Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 56:29Speaker 2: All right, Steve Vallis joining us here at the Beacon
- 56:31Speaker 2: Plumbing Hotline. And we'll transition right now to the other
- 56:34Speaker 2: side for the Issaquah Eagles from the 4A level. And
- 56:39Speaker 2: a guy that Steve knows very, very well, he just
- 56:42Speaker 2: mentioned his name about a few minutes ago. That's Josh Brookshire,
- 56:46Speaker 2: who's also helping open doors for those looking to take
- 56:49Speaker 2: their game next level here from this program at Issaquah
- 56:52Speaker 2: to the college ranks and refining expectations and also leadership
- 56:56Speaker 2: for a very, very young roster. Josh now joins us
- 56:59Speaker 2: right now on the Beacon Plumbing Hotline. Josh, good morning
- 57:03Speaker 2: to you. How are you feeling about 24 hours before
- 57:05Speaker 2: game time?
- 57:08Speaker 9: Oh, thanks, sir, for having me on. Feeling great. You know, we...
- 57:12Speaker 9: got a young, excited group of guys, and it's always
- 57:14Speaker 9: great to get to go play a quality program like
- 57:16Speaker 9: Liberty and match up against what I think is one
- 57:20Speaker 9: of the best head coaches in the Northwest. It's a
- 57:23Speaker 9: good way to measure yourself.
- 57:24Speaker 2: Tell me about your relationship with Steve. He pumped your
- 57:27Speaker 2: tires pretty big about a few minutes ago, and it's
- 57:29Speaker 2: kind of like you mentioned that your biggest competition comes
- 57:33Speaker 2: from the guys that you know well, you're friends with,
- 57:36Speaker 2: but what has Steve meant to you?
- 57:40Speaker 9: Steve has been a pretty incredible mentor to me since
- 57:42Speaker 9: I got out here. You know, me and my family
- 57:45Speaker 9: had never lived here really in the area until 2019.
- 57:48Speaker 9: And shortly after I got out here, Steve, um, unprompted
- 57:52Speaker 9: reached out to me and, uh, connected and has helped
- 57:55Speaker 9: me in a million ways, like so many ways. I, I,
- 57:59Speaker 9: I can't even account for all of them. Um, and,
- 58:02Speaker 9: and changed me personally, uh, in, uh, and I think
- 58:06Speaker 9: it makes everybody he interacts with a better person. So I,
- 58:09Speaker 9: I look forward to every interaction with him. And I,
- 58:12Speaker 9: I really look forward to playing against his team every year.
- 58:14Speaker 9: You know, we scheduled this game because you're friends, you're close,
- 58:18Speaker 9: you're similar in a lot of ways, you know, you're
- 58:20Speaker 9: dissimilar in a lot of ways. And I think it's a,
- 58:23Speaker 9: you know, we always look at football and sports as
- 58:26Speaker 9: an opportunity to find out who we are as people
- 58:28Speaker 9: and discover that about ourselves and then change it. If
- 58:31Speaker 9: we don't like what we see and, And so getting
- 58:33Speaker 9: to play against a team coach by Steve Valak every
- 58:36Speaker 9: year really forces you to look in the mirror and
- 58:39Speaker 9: decide like, Hey, are you doing stuff the right way?
- 58:41Speaker 9: And I love, I look forward to that opportunity.
- 58:44Speaker 2: Can you go back and think maybe as one of
- 58:46Speaker 2: the first moments that Steve made an impression on you
- 58:48Speaker 2: or an impact on you?
- 58:51Speaker 9: Oh, um, you know, a specific moment. I can't, I,
- 58:57Speaker 9: the first time I got to see him speak publicly,
- 58:59Speaker 9: I was at a, a local coaches event and, And
- 59:01Speaker 9: I'd talked to him a few times, and I knew, okay,
- 59:05Speaker 9: he's a good guy, Like it seems like cares about everybody.
- 59:08Speaker 9: But then when I got to see, and he got
- 59:10Speaker 9: to share his story and I, and then I got
- 59:11Speaker 9: to watch his kids play. Cause I do think that
- 59:13Speaker 9: that is a representation of who you are. That was
- 59:17Speaker 9: when I was like, Oh, this guy is the real deal. I,
- 59:20Speaker 9: you know, I need to, I need my game. I
- 59:22Speaker 9: need to listen when he speaks. And, and so I
- 59:25Speaker 9: can't really point to a specific moment. And I think
- 59:29Speaker 9: the thing that he does better than most people I
- 59:30Speaker 9: know is he's consistent and he's consistently great. So you
- 59:34Speaker 9: kind of get those moments over and over again.
- 59:36Speaker 2: That's one of the intriguing storylines that leads us into
- 59:38Speaker 2: tomorrow night's game and a program that you took over, Josh,
- 59:42Speaker 2: shortly before COVID. And you mentioned the time that you
- 59:45Speaker 2: spent elsewhere before moving out here to the area. Ultimately,
- 59:49Speaker 2: what I really admire about the high school ranks is
- 59:51Speaker 2: that it's all about moving players up. Over the last
- 59:54Speaker 2: two seasons, correct me if I'm wrong, but roughly you
- 59:58Speaker 2: moved 20 players from your program up into college football.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: I think for me the question is, when you do this,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: who's got the most to gain on the road there?
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Is it the parents, is it the coaches, or the
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: actual player?
- 1:00:14Speaker 9: I think it's kind of everyone. everybody has something to
- 1:00:18Speaker 9: do with that process. And we have had a lot
- 1:00:21Speaker 9: of kids in the last couple of years. And I
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: treat that mostly to the fact that they love football
- 1:00:26Speaker 9: and they want to continue it. And it is really
- 1:00:30Speaker 9: a huge team effort to get that going.
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: Cause there's a lot to getting a kid and getting
- 1:00:37Speaker 9: an athlete onto a college football roster nowadays. And it,
- 1:00:42Speaker 9: the effort and the process to do so varies wildly
- 1:00:45Speaker 9: by the kid and the location and the goals. And
- 1:00:47Speaker 9: so it's really a kind of personal process.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: About the recruiting process of all of this. I mean,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: I think so much of it is fascinating because it's
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: not just one simple conversation where you've got a player
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: who's going to a college campus or a coach is
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: visiting a home and there's even now the day of
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: Zoom that's involved. It digitizes this whole process here in 2026.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: But I think down to the bolts of this, With recruiting,
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: how much of this is talent? How much of this
- 1:01:16Speaker 2: is being a salesman? How much of this is film
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: preparation or academics or just finding the right fit at
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: the right level?
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: I think it's a little bit of everything. What I
- 1:01:28Speaker 9: try to relay to our kids and our families is that,
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: you know, I came from small college coaching. These people
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: are betting their careers and their livelihood on you, and
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: you have to be a no-brainer. You know, it's not...
- 1:01:40Speaker 9: I try to tell them like our recruiting process and
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: everything here is going to be based on honesty. I'm
- 1:01:44Speaker 9: never going to lie for an athlete to a coach
- 1:01:47Speaker 9: because I want the next one who's actually earned it
- 1:01:49Speaker 9: to be able to, you know, carry some integrity when
- 1:01:51Speaker 9: they get into that next building. And what I say
- 1:01:54Speaker 9: has to matter, you know, to these colleges or they
- 1:01:57Speaker 9: won't believe any of us. It'll hurt everyone that comes
- 1:01:59Speaker 9: after them. So that's the biggest deal is, and I,
- 1:02:03Speaker 9: and I explained to them that when you get there,
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: it's not going to be about your talent. It's going
- 1:02:08Speaker 9: to be about the talent that you're able to put.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: On the field.
- 1:02:11Speaker 9: So if you're unavailable for a classroom reason or a
- 1:02:15Speaker 9: personal reason or any other reason, you're unavailable and your
- 1:02:18Speaker 9: talents are relevant at that point. And so really it's
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: a holistic approach we take with the guys to get
- 1:02:23Speaker 9: them to understand, you know, you have to be a
- 1:02:26Speaker 9: complete package. You have to be a no brainer. And
- 1:02:28Speaker 9: we start them on it really early. You know, we,
- 1:02:30Speaker 9: they've got mandatory study halls here with us, weekly grade checks.
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: You know, we, We start to train them on that
- 1:02:36Speaker 9: idea and that model as soon as they.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: Get in the program.
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: Josh Brookshire joining us here at the Beacon Plumbing Hotline.
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: He's the head coach of the Issaquah Eagles at the
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: 4A level. And that ties into, I think, maybe with
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: the core values that you try to build these guys
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: up with. And Josh, one college hockey coach, I heard
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: him say this one time. If a recruit tells me,
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: and this is wild, if a recruit told me he
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: wants to, say, win a championship... I don't pursue him.
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: If he tells me I want to play in the NHL,
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: then I'm all over that and he's in. So that's
- 1:03:07Speaker 2: what the player is there for and it's development. I
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: think maybe it's one extreme way to kind of go
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: about this, but it's reality. So as far as you
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: are concerned, define Issaquah's success when it comes to college placement, academics,
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: games that these kids get in, and how much winning
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: can point them in different and higher directions.
- 1:03:31Speaker 9: Uh, that's a tough question. I, our success so far
- 1:03:34Speaker 9: has been on the fact that we have a lot
- 1:03:35Speaker 9: of great kids and families that love football and are
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: willing to do the whole thing.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:03:39Speaker 9: Like I had some time yesterday to write down everywhere.
- 1:03:42Speaker 9: We put somebody in the majority of our kids go
- 1:03:44Speaker 9: on to high academic environments. You know, they're at Whitworth's
- 1:03:47Speaker 9: and Willamette's and Carroll colleges and those kinds of places,
- 1:03:49Speaker 9: but for the majority and Chapman's where, uh, and Carlton's
- 1:03:53Speaker 9: where you have to be a great student and an athlete.
- 1:03:57Speaker 9: And so I'd say our, our primary success has been
- 1:03:59Speaker 9: on building holistic kids who love the game and are
- 1:04:02Speaker 9: willing to work hard. And, you know, I tell them
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: that that's it all the time. If you don't love
- 1:04:07Speaker 9: this game, when you leave high school, it's a job
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: and it's not just your job, it's that coach's job.
- 1:04:11Speaker 9: So you have to really, really love it. And I
- 1:04:14Speaker 9: would say that that is what I Mark is our
- 1:04:16Speaker 9: greatest point of success is we've just had a lot
- 1:04:18Speaker 9: of kids who love football and love the process of
- 1:04:21Speaker 9: football and and are willing to commit a significant amount
- 1:04:24Speaker 9: of time to it.
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: Tell me about the game tomorrow night here. What's the
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: biggest challenge with facing Liberty?
- 1:04:30Speaker 9: They are disciplined in their physical and Their systems are
- 1:04:34Speaker 9: really tight. You know you're not going to catch them
- 1:04:38Speaker 9: in bad game time management or situations management. You just
- 1:04:43Speaker 9: have to play straight football against them the whole time.
- 1:04:46Speaker 9: It really comes down to who can execute at a
- 1:04:48Speaker 9: higher percentage.
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: I told Steve this, and he gave us his sales
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: pitch as far as the eyeballs that could be on
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: your game for tomorrow night. Give me here one guy
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: from Issaquah or one position group from Issaquah. Give me
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: your Your brightest, give me your baddest, give me your meanest.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Pick one guy or one position group that someone's got
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: to watch out for tomorrow.
- 1:05:10Speaker 9: That's a tough one. We have a pretty talented, we think,
- 1:05:16Speaker 9: and deep receiver group. But in a unique way, they
- 1:05:20Speaker 9: might be the best blocking receiver group we've ever had
- 1:05:22Speaker 9: when I was here. They're pretty selfless, hardworking. But in reality,
- 1:05:30Speaker 9: our theme for this year with our guys is love
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: in the hunt. And we try to be in the
- 1:05:34Speaker 9: moment in every play. And so what I would expect
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: if you watch us as you see our guys is
- 1:05:38Speaker 9: they're not responding to the moment. They're trying to control
- 1:05:42Speaker 9: the temperature of the moment.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: Well, Steve wouldn't go in on as far as his
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: golf game, but you want to lobby the kind of
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: bragging rights that you might have facing him on the
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: golf course?
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: Steve would destroy me.
- 1:05:52Speaker 9: I haven't played golf in.
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: Probably five years.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Well, hey, hey, all the best to you and the
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: cheers to you with tomorrow night and getting him at
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: least for this one, but certainly appreciate your time there, Josh.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: All the best again. Go get him, and thanks for
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: the conversation.
- 1:06:07Speaker 9: Thanks for the time. Appreciate you guys covering the sport.
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: All right, Josh Brookshire joining us here, head coach from
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: the Issaquah Eagles. Great friend of his as well, Steve Vallance.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: You're going to go head-to-head from the sidelines, Issaquah and Liberty.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: That's all part of the spotlight here. And once again,
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: a great embodiment of just what this game at the
- 1:06:25Speaker 2: high school level means to the future of football in
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: the Pacific Northwest. Big thanks again to Steve and Josh
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: and from their programs.
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: For joining us.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: Talkbacks, texts, Travis also taking the reins for fact or fiction.
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: That's up next. We're set to go. Glad you're with us.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: It's your shot at our weekly $ 1, 000. And the $ 10, 000
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: grand prize.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: It's Fact or Fiction.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Proudly presented by Lucky Eagle Casino and Hotel. Where every
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: day feels lucky. Fact or Fiction is on. Sports Radio
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: Bringing you the moment that you have all been waiting for. Again,
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Bringing you Fact or Fiction.
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: Presented by Lucky Eagle Casino Resorts. Again, throughout the entire season,
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: 14 weeks. 11.35, mark it down on this show. At 11.35,
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: we will make a pick based on an upcoming college
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: or pro game, either against the spread or the total over-under. So,
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: your mission, you have 12 minutes to text FACT if
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: you agree with the pick, or FICTION if you hate
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: the pick. So 49451, we do, by the way, have
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: ways to track if you're trying to skirt the rules
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: here and send in two or three or four or
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: 6,000 texts. But again, you must pick only one option
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: per text window here at 1135. So without further ado,
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: the great Travis Moger behind the glass. You got the
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: spotlight here for this one.
- 1:08:05Speaker 4: Travis, go ahead.
- 1:08:06Speaker 2: Thank you, Mike Benton.
- 1:08:07Speaker 7: Let me first say that Picking Friday is a lot
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: more difficult because all the good games are taken at
- 1:08:13Speaker 7: this point.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: I was looking at lines and like, oh, that's a
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: good one. We're making you dig deep, man. Dig deeper.
- 1:08:19Speaker 7: What I like is the Jags 7.5 favorites against the Browns.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: The Jags have been 13.
- 1:08:26Speaker 7: Last season, they were 13 for 18 against the spread.
- 1:08:31Speaker 7: The Browns are awful. Their best receivers might be rookies.
- 1:08:36Speaker 7: Can you name one of the two rookie receivers? Starting
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: wide receivers for the Browns? One you should know.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: I'm drawing a blank right now. Denzel Boston. Denzel Boston,
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: thank you.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: I should know. X Husky. Yes, indeed.
- 1:08:52Speaker 7: So their best wide receivers are probably their rookies. They
- 1:08:55Speaker 7: don't have Miles Garrett anymore. And I really like... the
- 1:09:00Speaker 7: Jacksonville pass attack. Trevor Lawrence, very underrated, I think. So
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: I'm taking Jacksonville negative minus 7.5 over the Browns.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Jags over the Browns at minus 7.5. That's Travis's pick.
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: You like it? Text fact right now. To 49451, if
- 1:09:20Speaker 2: you hate it, text FICTION to 49451. Jags over the
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: Browns at minus seven and a half. That will teach
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: me to not multitask here. Cortenzo Boston. Play for the Huskies.
- 1:09:31Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: I let you go, and I thought, what did he
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: just ask me? That'll teach me. We got some talkbacks,
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: don't we? Got some time here?
- 1:09:42Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: Fire away.
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: Let's go.
- 1:09:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: You know, it's great that the Seahawks were able to
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: rally without having their full armament of guys. And we
- 1:09:53Speaker 5: saw the Rams falter. But no one's talking about the 49ers' defense.
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: That is something that we're going to have to deal with.
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: They're at full power. We faced them last year without
- 1:10:09Speaker 5: them being at full power. It's going to take a lot,
- 1:10:13Speaker 5: a lot to do it.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: I think there's certainly a point being the fact that
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: you've got Fred Warner who can still blow up plays. And, oh,
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: by the way, there's a guy in the front named
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Nick Bosa. You heard of him? Is he pretty good?
- 1:10:24Speaker 6: He looked pretty good last night.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: He looked pretty good. Yeah, that's going to be a problem. 49451,
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line, Texas right now. We already have
- 1:10:37Speaker 2: Fact or Fiction dropping in right now, hot and heavy.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: To more Seahawks reaction. 4-2-5. You know Drew Locke has
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: some tangibility, as Sam Darnold does not. Drew Locke's actually
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: very mobile and can scramble, and if they work that
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: in with the other quarterback, can't remember his name. I
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: don't know if that's sarcastic or not. They can be
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: really dynamic. Last name rhymes with NILRO.
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: Apparently he didn't watch Hard Knocks.
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: No.
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: Last name rhymes with NILRO. I don't know if we
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: want to go that deep to see Jalen Milrow play,
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: unless it's against the Pats once again. Hey-oh! Didn't Softy
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: bring that up, a little bit of a burn against
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: the Patriots? Play Jalen Milrow against New England. Let's just
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: see how that works out right now. They beat him
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: with Sam Darnold, got the ring, beat him with Drew
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: Locke basically in week one. Let's try the Jalen Milrow
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: experiment here. 4-9-4-5-1 again. From the 2-5-3, I think the
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: Seahawks defense is better than last year, and they weren't
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: at full strength. I think the offensive line is better
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: than last year. I think the offense will be better
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: than last year, and they're not at full strength. The
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: rest of the league should worry about the Seahawks. I
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: really want to see what this offense does when A,
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: Sam Darnold's healthy, and We get more reaction here when
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: he could come back. There's maybe even a guess that
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: they may save him for week five against who? The
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers. Oh, boy. So is Sam Darnold healthy enough?
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Mixed in with. Is Jadarian Price ramped up? Mixed in
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: with as well. is Zach Charbonnet back in behind him.
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: That's a game changer for me. Assuming nobody else is hurt,
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: that's your offense that you want to look at when
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: everything is rolling. One here, HockeySide206. Call him Matty Beneers, soft, overrated.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: For some reason, Mikey, you love him. Another below 500
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: season incoming here from the 206. I'm sorry if you
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: think that I have a little thing for Matty Beneers.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: Matter of fact, is he got better last year Matter
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: of fact, as he went from second year, coming out
- 1:12:56Speaker 2: the Calder Trophy year, and he had that massive dip,
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: 37 points, went to 43 after that, went to 50
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: after that. May I encourage you to go Google a
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: name here? And he turned in one of the great
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: careers in NHL history, never won a Stanley Cup, but
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: came close, but yet, These were similar numbers he was
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: pumping out until later on in his 20s. Must I
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: remind you of the name Patrick Marlowe? Not bad. So
- 1:13:29Speaker 2: for Matty Beneers, I firmly believe, and from what I
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: heard and what I saw as well, There was some
- 1:13:34Speaker 2: work on the side to open more doors, unlock some
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: creativity that was maybe locked up because he was so
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: hyper-focused on being a defensive center. After he won the
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: Calder Trophy, the numbers will take a dip. But that
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: creativity is opening. I don't think 70 points is out
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: of question to ask from him this year.
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: Now.
- 1:13:57Speaker 2: Here's the caveat with this. I fully agree that you're
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: getting into a thing where, should he be your 1C?
- 1:14:05Speaker 2: It's pretty apparent from the word across the NHL, he's
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: an established No. 2 center on a Stanley Cup contending team.
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: But right now, this is what you got. This is
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: who you have. I'm fine with Matty Beneers right down
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: the middle. You don't have to ask about his commitment
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: level anymore. You don't have to ask about how much
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: he shows up. Every guy will swear by him. For me,
- 1:14:29Speaker 2: the big question is, can the weight go up now?
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Because that was where he was exposed last couple years
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: in battles along the boards. The face-off circle thing has
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: been figured out, it feels like now. But can he
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: put on more weight and can he maintain that weight
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: to really play with the big boys in the tall trees?
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: And that's right toward the front of the net. Good
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: stuff here. Again, appreciate you. 49451 Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: Got a break here.
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: It's next.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Now back to the Washington State Beef Commission's Football Friday
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: with Greg Bell on your home for the NFL.
- 1:15:10Speaker 6: Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: Craig's back next week as he's taking a few days
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: off and on a plane somewhere. I forget where, but again,
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: Mike Benton filling in for him. On the football Friday,
- 1:15:24Speaker 2: we're just missing the NFL team out of the party.
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: The good news, though, Ian Furness, they're 1-0.
- 1:15:30Speaker 5: 1-0.
- 1:15:30Speaker 9: 1-0.
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: 1-0.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: It's all that matters, buddy. We're still clearing the smoke
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: here from all of this, so to speak, and it's
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: a good feeling here for me. Where are you today?
- 1:15:40Speaker 2: Are you out to Snoqualmie?
- 1:15:41Speaker 13: It was Snoqualmie Casino, Hotel, and the Hawks Peak, which
- 1:15:45Speaker 13: we got big goings on this weekend.
- 1:15:46Speaker 6: We'll tell you about.
- 1:15:47Speaker 13: Of course, they're the title sponsor of the Ian Furness
- 1:15:49Speaker 13: 12-3 show on 93.3 KJR FM. So we come up
- 1:15:53Speaker 13: here a couple times a month during the football season.
- 1:15:56Speaker 13: Last week, they started college. This week, they started the NFL.
- 1:15:58Speaker 13: So we'll tell you what they got going on up
- 1:16:00Speaker 13: here at the Snoqualmie Casino and Hotel.
- 1:16:03Speaker 6: Great spot.
- 1:16:04Speaker 13: Lots going on this weekend, especially here in Hawks Peak.
- 1:16:06Speaker 13: where we can watch the games. In fact, one of
- 1:16:08Speaker 13: the things on one of the 60-plus televisions right now
- 1:16:11Speaker 13: is a replay of the Rams and the 49ers.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: It's here in studio right now.
- 1:16:15Speaker 13: Yeah, and I can tell you, I'm enjoying it. I
- 1:16:18Speaker 13: even know the outcome, and I'm still enjoying it again.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: It looks great out there. They packed the place in.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: I love the decor in the backdrop at kickoff. And
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: I think if you're playing a game late in the morning,
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: their time, it looks weird. But, I mean, all things aside,
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: the Rams, I guess you can say that plane rides
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: right before kickoff don't work. They pulled this thing off
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: pretty well, though.
- 1:16:41Speaker 13: Yeah, I just, and I think there's a three-year deal
- 1:16:45Speaker 13: in place I saw today to go back there again
- 1:16:47Speaker 13: a couple more times. The toll it's just going to
- 1:16:51Speaker 13: take on teams is just massive. Like, it just is huge.
- 1:16:57Speaker 13: I've never done that trip, but talking to people that have,
- 1:16:59Speaker 13: it's really hard. Even if you're on these great planes
- 1:17:02Speaker 13: and have everything there for you, I mean, just that is,
- 1:17:06Speaker 13: you know, it's bad enough going to Europe.
- 1:17:08Speaker 6: Especially if you're a West Coast team.
- 1:17:10Speaker 13: But you're adding hours and hours onto that trip.
- 1:17:15Speaker 6: It's just a lot, man. I don't know. I'm just
- 1:17:17Speaker 6: not a fan of it.
- 1:17:17Speaker 13: Never will be a fan of games not being played
- 1:17:20Speaker 13: in NFL stadiums in the NFL. But I'm maybe just
- 1:17:25Speaker 13: the ugly American today.
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: But then if you want to tweak this game again,
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: when do you play it besides week one?
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: Well, see, and that's the problem, Mike. That's the problem
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: you run into. Because.
- 1:17:39Speaker 13: And, you know, the tradition of having the Super Bowl
- 1:17:41Speaker 13: champion open the season on Thursday night football, if they're
- 1:17:45Speaker 13: going to do this damn game, you're going to probably
- 1:17:47Speaker 13: end up having to play on a Wednesday. And, you know,
- 1:17:53Speaker 13: every year the Super Bowl champion may end up playing
- 1:17:55Speaker 13: on a Wednesday and then the Australia game has to
- 1:17:58Speaker 13: be on Thursday. And I just, I mean, it's been cool.
- 1:18:01Speaker 13: I mean, certainly we've all enjoyed watching football this week,
- 1:18:04Speaker 13: but I don't know. I just think it takes, I think,
- 1:18:07Speaker 13: If you're really concerned about things like player safety and well-being.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: And all those things... I just don't know how you
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: can make that thing.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: See, I think at least it taught me as well,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: if you work for a pro sports team, always thank
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: your team travel guy. Because, I mean, I would hate
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: to be someone working for the Rams right now after
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: seeing what Sean McVay said. We're going to do some
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: talking here to some people after this game. And I thought,
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: oh boy, they're in one right now.
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: Well, and that's the question too, Mikey, is like.
- 1:18:39Speaker 13: Who made the ultimate decision to go when they did?
- 1:18:43Speaker 13: Because all leading up to it, McVay and those guys
- 1:18:46Speaker 13: were trying to sound like the smartest guys in the world.
- 1:18:48Speaker 13: They're leaning on their sports science. people, and I just
- 1:18:51Speaker 13: wonder how much do they say, hey, if we want
- 1:18:54Speaker 13: to do this, does it make sense? And just hearing
- 1:18:58Speaker 13: what they wanted to hear.
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: I don't know. End of the day, the good news
- 1:19:02Speaker 6: is the Rams, the super team, they lost.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: They got a pie in the face for getting.
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: 17-0, right?
- 1:19:06Speaker 13: Yeah, and I don't know how much it had to
- 1:19:08Speaker 13: do with the fact that they were traveled late and
- 1:19:11Speaker 13: what have you, but it probably didn't help. At the
- 1:19:14Speaker 13: end of the day, the other part of it is
- 1:19:15Speaker 13: Stafford looked like garbage, and the 49ers defense looked really good,
- 1:19:19Speaker 13: even though they're missing a couple starters up front, and
- 1:19:22Speaker 13: it was a big, big win for them.
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: You think Sam plays this month?
- 1:19:28Speaker 13: Well, I think you hope he plays in Washington. I mean, listen,
- 1:19:33Speaker 13: the Cardinals are awful, so that doesn't matter, right?
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: That doesn't matter. I think negative. 01 % chance of
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: making the playoffs.
- 1:19:41Speaker 6: Oh, if he doesn't play?
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: No, I'm talking the Cardinals.
- 1:19:45Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:19:47Speaker 13: Their only chance to make the postseason if they were, say,
- 1:19:50Speaker 13: like in the NFC South, which is the American League
- 1:19:53Speaker 13: West of the NFL.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: All right, buy us in some time. What you got
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: coming up here, man?
- 1:19:59Speaker 13: Big show Fridays are always big show for us during
- 1:20:00Speaker 13: football season. Our friend Greg Cosell will join us at 1220.
- 1:20:03Speaker 13: Normally he gives us the update and the preview of
- 1:20:07Speaker 13: the games. and the Seahawks opponent and all that. This
- 1:20:10Speaker 13: week we're going to basically review it all because they've
- 1:20:13Speaker 13: already played. Well, I'm going to ask about the Rams too,
