- 2:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Thanks for joining us.
- 2:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh just want to talk on this show uh because we have uh we started the journey of obviously going back to the gym, working out, uh trying to get on a schedule uh for our health, uh, so that we're uh able to be as healthy as we can be.
- 2:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I do a lot of sitting with uh the work we do.
- 3:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so anytime I can get up and out and uh at the gym, whether it's cardio with my legs on the treadmill, uh an elliptical, or it's an arm bike uh, or lifting weights, whether that's on a machine, whether that's uh resistance bands, uh, or those are free weights or any other uh type of uh exercise to do.
- 3:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I want to share today one of the results of uh working out at the gym or the lack thereof over the course of many, many, many, many, many years.
- 3:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So again, I've mentioned you know, late teens in my 20s.
- 3:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I I was working out at the gym, I don't know, was it four, four days, five days a week, whatever it was.
- 4:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I uh you know, we we wear clothes, right?
- 4:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so we wear different sizes.
- 4:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh it makes all of us unique.
- 4:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And and so there were times in my life during uh when I was working out that I wore, you know, a certain size and clothes, like shirts and pants and shorts, and you know, everything boxers and all that.
- 4:29Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um that's all well and good, but then when I went through that period, well, this was a long period of time where I wasn't working out, I wasn't being active at all.
- 4:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It was driving my clothes selection to not fit because I was well, I was getting bigger, I was gaining a lot of weight, and and so that caused me to uh to need to purchase more clothes in different sizes, and so that's a lot of money because right, you're looking for a new wardrobe in a different size, different sizes.
- 5:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh I know that my my taste in clothing changed as well.
- 5:35Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I went through a big phase where I would wear a tie to work every day.
- 5:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so I needed a shirt so I could put the tie right and and all that.
- 5:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I was having to purchase different size shirts, and it wasn't like a weekly thing, but it was, I don't know, maybe maybe a monthly or every couple months, I would notice my weight would just fluctuate big time.
- 6:08Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so a pair of pants or a pair of shorts that were fitting now weren't.
- 6:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I gotta go to the store and buy some clothes that fit.
- 6:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then I went through a phase of kind of doing the opposite.
- 6:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I wasn't really working out, but I really wasn't eating a whole lot.
- 6:37Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I was eating a lot of a lot of lean cuisines for meals, uh, which there's nothing wrong with with with those uh those options, but when you know breakfast is small to non-existent, and then lunch, because right, I was in this fast pace, gotta get this done, gotta get this done.
- 7:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so a lot of times I wasn't able to take a lunch.
- 7:14Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I was just working through lunch, or I wouldn't eat until like two o'clock in the afternoon.
- 7:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I was all out of whack, my body's out of whack, it was causing you know blood sugar and cortisol, everything, because I was you know extra stressed of like, I gotta get this project done, I gotta get this done.
- 7:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, I can't take a lunch because then I'm gonna be behind.
- 7:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so those were imposed deadlines from work, from management, and then sometimes they were self-imposed deadlines where I was talking to myself, like, you know, Justin, we gotta do this, let's get this done, let's do let's go ahead and do this.
- 8:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, you know, it's not a big deal.
- 8:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: We'll eat lunch here in 10 minutes, and then 10 minutes turn into 30 minutes, and 30 minutes turn into an hour.
- 8:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And sometimes I'd go into like three or four, and I wouldn't have lunch, I wouldn't have a snack.
- 8:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, because my mind was just gotta get this done, gotta get this done, I gotta get this done.
- 8:25Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, a lot of screen time was which was causing a lot of addiction to the screens of like, oh, I gotta do this, and it just wasn't making anything, well, wasn't making things better.
- 8:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So during that period of time, you know, not eating full meals or even close to full meals, or like I said, there'd be times where I wouldn't eat lunch at all, not because I didn't want to.
- 9:01Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, when I had self-imposed deadlines, it was because that was self-imposed by me, myself.
- 9:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then when there's managers and directors and vice presidents and presidents and CEOs and everybody like that, it was like, oh my gosh, I gotta get this done.
- 9:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then my manager would be like, We gotta get this done, we gotta get this done by the end of the day, we got, and so there's all this pressure, and so there was a time when I again prior to that, I was I gained a lot of weight because I was being sedentary and I was eating lunch and I was eating meals.
- 9:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: This time I wasn't eating full meals, not even close to it.
- 9:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so the size of clothes that started out, let's say the athletic fit went to the big, like I need a size or two bigger genes.
- 10:04Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Well, now at this point in time, it was going the opposite way, so I wasn't working on, I wasn't working out the gym, but my body was losing weight because I was eating less, and the stress didn't help out either, anxiety.
- 10:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So then my clothes sizes changed again this time.
- 10:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It went down, but it didn't go, my clothing sizes didn't go down to the point where they were when I was athletic and going to the gym and that.
- 10:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So that meant I needed again, a new wardrobe, whatever that meant, more money to spend.
- 10:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I'd been on this cycle over the course of my life, gaining weight, losing weight, this reason, that reason.
- 11:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And maybe maybe you've run into that before.
- 11:11Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Maybe you know somebody that has, and it's not talking down on anybody at all, it's just the fact of life that sometimes we gain weight and sometimes we lose weight, and so now I've only been back into the gym routine.
- 11:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I'll have to look after look on my phone, I think maybe four weeks or so, and so I'm starting to notice uh a lot of clothes aren't fitting.
- 11:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I think I went through like four pairs of shorts today that I was like, because it's hot out, and uh some of my other shorts are uh kind of in the washer pile in the hamper.
- 12:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And and so I was going down the line, and I think I went through like four different pairs of shorts that didn't fit.
- 12:15Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I don't at this early stage of four weeks, I don't know if the reason they don't fit is because I'm putting on muscle, which I am, and again, I'm I'm not in the gym thing for you know a competition or anything.
- 12:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, it's just a fact that if if you work out, you lift a little weight, you're probably gonna gain a little bit of muscle.
- 12:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I don't know if the reason these shorts weren't didn't fit was because of muscle that I was putting on, or because my weight is still above where when I purchased those shorts uh or or got them as gifts, uh those sizes were fit were fitting that.
- 13:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so that's why I'm taking this whole show to talk about it because it affects mental health, right?
- 13:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because if you or I, right, so we're like, okay, so we've waken up, we're woken up, uh we're going to change for the day, and we try on a shirt, and it's you know, way too baggy, way too big, or it's way too tight.
- 13:46Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um it is it it wears on the mental the mental health, my mental health of like, okay, Justin, now am I gonna have to go back and buy additional clothing that fits me?
- 14:06Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What I think is going on, and I don't know this for a fact, I don't have a medical degree, I don't have the answers on this.
- 14:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Obviously, nobody's perfect.
- 14:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh so I'm trying to figure out again if it's the weight is the muscle, or if it is my body is still working its way from the weight that I was before I started working out to I'm not at that point yet where I'm losing weight, and that weight is turning into muscle, and then those shorts may fit.
- 15:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so it's hard to really pinpoint for me at this point, what exactly is driving the the clothes that aren't fitting?
- 15:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh because I do feel a little bit of muscle, but it but again, it it all depends again on on the body parts you work out, right?
- 15:33Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So if you don't work out the legs and you know that and you're just working out like kind of the upper half of the body, then the sizes may still remain big.
- 15:52Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What I have included in my workouts is a leg workout.
- 15:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That's one of the days like one of the body parts work out.
- 16:03Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um and I think tomorrow's legs uh at the gym.
- 16:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I'm doing that in part because I I didn't really, even when I was back in my weightlifting days, I didn't really do a whole lot of legs working out, uh, lower half working out.
- 16:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so again, I'm going for the tone, a toned body versus you know, like a muscular, I'm 44, I'm just I'm just looking to get active as however I can.
- 16:49Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I'm in that dilemma again of okay, how long do I how long do I wait before I reach some kind of a conclusion that okay, it's muscle or it's not, and how does that affect the clothing options that I have?
- 17:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Because I have clothes in my closet that are kind of from my and I was larger and I wasn't at the gym, and again, I've been there four weeks, so I'm still probably in that larger uh that larger bucket, I guess.
- 17:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And and then I also have from when I was in a little bit more of a tone, even though I wasn't working out, just the eating part, especially again in 2017 when I was going through that phase for many years, uh, where I wasn't eating.
- 17:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I I was in that have that 400 calorie lean cuisine or 500 calorie for lunch, sometimes skipping breakfast.
- 18:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and so I was basically starving my body.
- 18:12Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh and then the muscles were just my body was kind of eating the muscle away uh because it needed money, it needed not money, it didn't need money, it needed an energy, and so that's where it was getting energy from.
- 18:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so that's really what was driving my weight down in those instances.
- 18:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Wasn't because I was working out, it was for a whole new, whole new reason, whole different reason.
- 18:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: There we go.
- 18:44Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So I I think it's good just to talk through this because body weight and body shaming and bullying can come in all shapes and sizes.
- 18:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh if somebody's a student, has children, is a guardian to children, works with children, and teaches children, uh, those are things that can that can really hurt.
- 19:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: If you know bullying, like, oh, look how much they weigh, look how big they are, or look how tight, look how skinny.
- 19:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: There's just skin and bones, and um and so it's it's something we we we gotta watch out as a society.
- 19:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So these kids, and then even in in adulthood, uh we we've got to make sure that uh everybody is given the same opportunities, not going, oh wow, look, look how big he is, look how much weight.
- 19:56Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Do I want to sit with him at work or and near him, or do I want him to be my boss or her to be my boss?
- 20:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And uh, and then he goes and kind of goes the other way.
- 20:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And then when we talk about school, I mean, going growing up is hard enough as it is, uh, going to school.
- 20:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's hard enough going through trying to find your identity, and I went through that, and for a lot of my life I went I went through that.
- 20:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Of what's my identity?
- 20:34Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like, why am I here?
- 20:36Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And I'm still at times feeling the same way of why am I here?
- 20:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: What am I doing?
- 20:45Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Why did why has God kept me on this earth when so many great people have passed away?
- 20:51Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, I don't I don't know.
- 20:54Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so when I think of these topics and uh you know before we do our shows, yeah, we're talking about real life.
- 21:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like this is real life.
- 21:07Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Like students are going to be going back to school in certain areas of the country very soon, next couple weeks.
- 21:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Some children go go to school all year round.
- 21:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, and so they're they're in it, they're in school uh right now.
- 21:31Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And just as we talk about, no child is for sale, nobody's for sale, uh, we do we do have to make sure that we're staying on top of the bullying.
- 21:42Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh B U L L Y I N G bullying.
- 21:47Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh because that can cause children or anybody to just question like, why am I here?
- 21:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Why am I on earth?
- 22:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: All I'm doing is getting bullying.
- 22:02Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Nobody's accepting me for who I am.
- 22:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh then that's kind of where I was at.
- 22:09Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I was in the sports and that when I was growing up, and then it and then the sports kind of went without me.
- 22:18Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so I was in, you know, this phase of okay, I was hanging out a little bit with the with the other athletes, but even when I was hanging out with them, it wasn't I wasn't included in, and I'm not saying that children have to go to a party.
- 22:43Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: All I'm saying is I wasn't included in any get-togethers like that.
- 22:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, and so it hurt my feelings a lot.
- 22:53Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And not only the weight uh situation in high school, I don't know that if that was really don't know if that that was as prevalent, but I do know the acne, you know, and your skin's red, and you know, and then you pop a pimple or a zit.
- 23:17Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And um, I had bad skin, and and so I thought in my mind that that was the reason why people didn't like me, people didn't want to hang out with me.
- 23:32Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh, and it could be, I don't, I don't know, but I just remember being very uncomfortable doing just very it wasn't simple because growing up isn't simple, but I was just having a real hard, hard time, and my face being like that, and I had braces.
- 23:55Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I there's so many things, embraces my face with the acne, uh finding my identity, which I again I I've just started, I think, to just touch the edge of the iceberg on why I'm still here.
- 24:19Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: You know, none of us are none of us are promised tomorrow, none of us are promised another second on earth.
- 24:27Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And so that's why we're so adamant getting content out, is because we do and we are going to be reaching over three billion people over the course of my lifetime and beyond, and help in some way.
- 24:48Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It could be with a laugh, you know, a joke that I make, it could be uh any number of topics or guest topics uh that you can relate to, and I can relate to.
- 25:05Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh just me talking through this is helping me a little bit process part of my childhood or a lot of my childhood.
- 25:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And that had absolutely nothing to do with my my parents.
- 25:20Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It was just the way my body was.
- 25:23Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: That that's just how it was.
- 25:26Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I had acne really bad, and then I had anxiety, so I would pick up my face, and then and so now like having for the most part a clear face, except when I have like really elevated stress and anxiety, um, then you know there can be areas where it's you know I'm in a I'm in that ruminating phase of just thinking about something over and over and over and over and over again.
- 25:59Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Um, I think we all do at some extent, maybe not every day, maybe not every week, maybe not every month, but here and there we probably have the elevated anxiety and stress at some point.
- 26:16Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: And if we don't now, maybe we did earlier in our lives.
- 26:24Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: So thanks for joining us on this episode, you know, talking about the bullying, talking about you know, being shamed for body, weight both ways of too much or too little, uh talking about you know acne, uh growing up, puberty, you know, that uh you know, it's real oily skin, and I I I couldn't do anything about it.
- 26:58Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I tried to.
- 27:00Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Uh but part of me thinks that that makes me who I am today by going through those uh those hard times, those times where I wasn't included, the times where I didn't make the team when I thought I should have, or that I didn't get the playing time that I I thought I should have.
- 27:30Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: It's just very it's very humbling to talk about these topics because we're talking, you know, we're talking about being human, right?
- 27:41Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: I mean, that's exactly what we're talking about, and I want to thank you for being on this journey on this episode.

- 29:28Voices for Voices, Justin Alan Hayes: Yeah, you can you can help out uh in in a way.
