- 0:00Welcome to the Gill 1918 Project, a podcast series by
- 0:03coaches for coaches, powered by Gill Athletics.
- 0:05Think of it as the Ted Talks of track and field coaching.
- 0:08Short, insightful, and packed with valuable strategies to help
- 0:11you grow as a coach. This episode is part of the
- 0:13Youth and Beginner Series, brought to you by Coach O.
- 0:16In this series, we focus on topics relating to coaching
- 0:19youth athletes, coaching beginner athletes of any age,
- 0:21and supporting brand new coaches as they find their way.
- 0:24With that in mind, let's grow. What's up everybody, It's your
- 0:28boy, two time Olympic high jumper, actor, writer and
- 0:31producer Jamie Nieto. Now today I'm going to be
- 0:33talking to you about what it takes to be an amazing high
- 0:37jumper. All right, So for me, the first
- 0:40thing that I always teach kids and younger athletes or anybody
- 0:44who I start working with is Sprint mechanics.
- 0:46If you think about it, Sprint mechanics is really the key or
- 0:50one of the keys to becoming a great high jumper.
- 0:53Why? Well, think about it, 90% of
- 0:56what you're doing when you high jump is running.
- 0:58So why not be as efficient as as possible on the runway?
- 1:02So that's something to think about because only 10% is
- 1:05probably actually the jump, right?
- 1:07We have 10 steps or 8 steps or 12 steps or however many steps
- 1:10you take and however many steps you take that is still going to
- 1:14be a run now. So, so that's the first thing I
- 1:18like to talk about is, you know, learning Sprint mechanics.
- 1:22I think, you know, if you work with your Sprint coaches or, or
- 1:25whoever, you know that that can definitely help you out a lot.
- 1:29The, the next thing I like to talk about is consistency.
- 1:33This is always key. Consistency is key.
- 1:37Consistency of the way you're thinking, consistency in what
- 1:39you're doing when you're doing your high jumping and your
- 1:42approach. So for me, I, I like to look at
- 1:46it like this with, with the high jump, there are three different
- 1:51phases. Now you might not hear this from
- 1:53a lot of coaches or a lot of athletes there and, and a lot of
- 1:56them might do it and don't even realize that they're doing it.
- 1:59But when you know that you have 3 phases and you go to execute
- 2:03those 3 phases, guess what? You become more consistent.
- 2:06If you don't know that you have those 3 phases, then your
- 2:10consistency can be all over the place.
- 2:12You're you're worrying about rhythm and you're worrying about
- 2:14tempo and you're worrying about all these other things.
- 2:17But if you can get your phases right, then that can help with
- 2:20all that other stuff with rhythm and tempo, because those things
- 2:24are important as well. But I think if you get the
- 2:26phases connected together right, then you will be able to
- 2:31consistently jump higher. So what are the phases?
- 2:35Well, when you've learned, when you're learning Sprint
- 2:37mechanics, you learn that, OK, what makes something or someone
- 2:41really fast? Well, what makes a person fast
- 2:44is speed and frequency. So, right, So if you don't know,
- 2:49speed is how much ground you're, you're covering, right?
- 2:53That's how much ground you're covering.
- 2:55Frequency is how quickly your feet are hitting the ground.
- 2:58So the reason why Usain Bolt is so fast is because he's 6 foot
- 3:025. He's covering a lot of ground
- 3:04with those long legs. But not only that, his legs are
- 3:07hitting the ground, His feet are hitting the ground just as fast
- 3:10as the little guys or the shorter guys, let me not call
- 3:12them little, but the shorter guys.
- 3:14So his feet are hitting the ground at a rapid frequency as
- 3:18well as covering more ground than everybody else.
- 3:20That's one of the reasons why he's a world record holder,
- 3:22right? So if you know that, OK, we know
- 3:26that in the beginning of your approach, you want to push out
- 3:29and you want to build speed, right?
- 3:31So that's the first phase speed. But there's always got to be a
- 3:35transition. So if you're driving in a car
- 3:38mostly don't really have stick shifts anymore, but if you
- 3:43really pay attention to what your automatic car is doing,
- 3:46it'll drive, it'll rent the, the, the motor will Rev and then
- 3:52it'll take a pause and, and then, and then hit that next
- 3:56gear. So it's the same thing.
- 3:58So you always got to have that pause, right?
- 4:01So when you drive out, that middle phase is almost that
- 4:04pause. And I'm not telling you you need
- 4:06to stop, obviously, and I'm not telling you you need to slow
- 4:10down. You, you got to keep the speed
- 4:12that you just built from the first phase.
- 4:14So the first phase, if we're doing 10, a 10 step approach is
- 4:18drive 123. That's pushing out driving,
- 4:21building that speed, right? You're covering ground and then
- 4:2545645 and 6 is going to be that middle phase, which is your
- 4:29second phase, which is more of a maintenance phase.
- 4:33And I like to call it a maintenance phase.
- 4:34But what it is, is it's maintaining that that, that
- 4:37speed that you just built. Now that gives us a moment to be
- 4:42able to get in great position. So now we can stand up really
- 4:45tall because we want to be as tall as we can, right?
- 4:48Because the higher your center of gravity is, the the better it
- 4:52is. When you take off, you don't
- 4:53want to have a low center of gravity.
- 4:55Now you're coming out of a hole. You want to get the optimum
- 4:57position at takeoff, which is usually about 1/4 squat.
- 5:01So now you get up tall and you're, you're straight up and
- 5:04down in the curve. So you're 456 now 6 is the
- 5:09beginning to your next phase. So your last four steps, like I
- 5:13said, it's a 10 step approach. Once you hit 6, now you go 78910
- 5:18and that's 78910 is guess what frequency.
- 5:21So you're, you're, you're not gaining any speed anymore.
- 5:24Even though when you look at people's approach, sometimes you
- 5:27think, oh, it's just a constant build up every, most people do
- 5:32it. Most people have three phases
- 5:34where they realize it or not. And they're they're all settled
- 5:37in some of their in the ways they do it.
- 5:39Mine I felt like was very defined when I had jumped.
- 5:42I drove out 123-456-7910. That was my rhythm.
- 5:49That was the frequency at the end that 7910, the drive out 123
- 5:54is the is the drive the building of the speed 456.
- 5:58I'm breathing, I'm relaxing in the sense I'm but I'm not
- 6:02slowing down. I'm maintaining speed.
- 6:04I'm making, I'm getting my posture and I'm getting tall.
- 6:07I'm getting in the right position.
- 6:08So now when I get into that curve for 7910, it's almost like
- 6:12I'm running downhill, right? My feet are hitting the ground
- 6:15that quick, right? So that's, that's the main thing
- 6:19when it comes to speed and frequency that really helps with
- 6:24the, the phases of your approach.
- 6:27Now, some people, like I said, they, they do it and it's, it's
- 6:29different. Some people might go
- 6:3112345678910, you know, some, some might go 12345678910.
- 6:40You know, there's so many different ways that you can do
- 6:43it and you got to find a way that really works and that's
- 6:46best for you. Consistency is key.
- 6:50So when you do that, you can't keep changing.
- 6:52A lot of times, you know, especially high school athletes
- 6:56still, you know, have their approach here, there, over
- 6:59there. They might use their friends
- 7:01approach one day. They just pick up a spot.
- 7:04I've seen it all. You got to be consistent.
- 7:06The other thing that helps you to be consistent, right, is
- 7:09measuring out your approach, right?
- 7:11So you say, well, I do measure out my approach every time.
- 7:14Well, then I would ask you, well, where do you put the the
- 7:18measuring tape? And you might say well in front
- 7:20of the standard or behind the standard or on the side of the
- 7:23standard. What you got to realize is every
- 7:26standard, almost almost every standard is different.
- 7:29Let me not talking absolutes, but almost every standard is
- 7:32different. So you got to realize that,
- 7:35okay, the bar never changes and where the where the bar is sits,
- 7:40the little peg that it sits on never changes.
- 7:43So if you know that that never changes, no matter what kind of
- 7:46standard you have, that's the best place to start your
- 7:51measuring from. Because some standards are wide,
- 7:54some standards are small, some standards are skinny, some more
- 7:57tall, some. So you have all these different
- 7:59standards. Now that's going to make you
- 8:00inconsistent If you're measuring in a spot that's always
- 8:04different, but the bar and the peg isn't always different.
- 8:08That's always the same. That's the most consistent.
- 8:10So that's what I would look at. That's what I would look for
- 8:14when when measuring. So you'd measure out from the
- 8:17standard. My, my width was about 12 feet
- 8:21and then I measure back from 12 feet all the way back to about
- 8:2474 feet. And I would usually have a min
- 8:27mark, which is usually around half of 74.
- 8:31So whatever that was, sometimes it'd be a little bit off
- 8:35depending on how hard I pushed out of the back or whatever.
- 8:37So it wouldn't be exactly half, but usually it's around, you
- 8:42know, half, half of whatever that long number is.
- 8:45So the thing you got to think about is trying to keep things
- 8:48as consistent as possible. The more inconsistent you are,
- 8:53the more inconsistent you're going to be when you jump.
- 8:55Now, I say that also in the sense of, hey, when I get up on
- 8:59my mark, they've called my name and it's time for me to jump.
- 9:03Now what do I do? Well, I have a routine that I do
- 9:06and my routine is within a few seconds before I actually start
- 9:11to run. So when I go over there on my
- 9:13mark, I put my foot down. I look, visualize myself in the
- 9:18approach, see myself jumping in the bar, drop back to my back
- 9:22foot, push out and go. It's the same every time.
- 9:26You can tie me. I'm sure I'll be within seconds
- 9:29of of the same time every time you tie me on every approach
- 9:34because I'm consistently thinking the same thing.
- 9:38I'm consistently trying to always do the same thing that is
- 9:42going to lead to consistent high jumping and to consistently
- 9:46jumping higher. Those are things you got to
- 9:48think about. So that's just a little brief,
- 9:52just a little brief tip there for you.
- 9:55You know, when you're thinking about coaching and and getting
- 9:57ready to to start this new season off.
