- 0:00Speaker 1: Well it is ten thirty on a Tuesday morning and
- 0:03Speaker 1: joining me in the studio right now, Dave Tolna.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Good morning, great to me with you, Cadi and.
- 0:08Speaker 3: Damian Hale, good morning to you.
- 0:10Speaker 4: Get a Katie. How are you very well?
- 0:12Speaker 1: Great to have you both on this morning for the
- 0:13Speaker 1: big issues and what's to.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Cover off on I guess well there it always.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Is, but this morning it's been a bit interesting as
- 0:20Speaker 1: it was yesterday following on from that news that well
- 0:23Speaker 1: Senator Sam McMahon allegedly got into.
- 0:26Speaker 3: A bit of a scuffle.
- 0:30Speaker 1: After a NATS party or during the NATS party.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I don't know whether it was after.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Or during, but as she was being put into a
- 0:38Speaker 1: taxi allegedly.
- 0:39Speaker 5: What were your thoughts, Well, the that's just summed up
- 0:45Speaker 5: in one word. At a party the king O Hotel,
- 0:49Speaker 5: because I remember going to the king O a bit
- 0:51Speaker 5: and the best thing about it, You remember, Dave, you
- 0:53Speaker 5: cook your own state, Yeah.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Yeah, and it was a great remember it well, yeah.
- 0:57Speaker 5: I remember one day I rocked up there and it
- 0:59Speaker 5: was Camber Day, text all my colleagues and.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Rode from there. My mate he used to share with
- 1:06Speaker 2: he got lost one night I was twenty five meters
- 1:10Speaker 2: to the door.
- 1:12Speaker 4: There was thirty colleagues coming.
- 1:14Speaker 5: I cooked steaks and then Tony Abbott walks in and Dunton,
- 1:17Speaker 5: so I said, go and buy a steak, Go and
- 1:19Speaker 5: get a steak, bring it over here.
- 1:20Speaker 4: So I was cooking Tory steaks and then the manager.
- 1:25Speaker 5: The manager loved us, and so I organized him and
- 1:28Speaker 5: he dropped the bottle of red on a few of
- 1:30Speaker 5: the tables. So everyone had a great night. So I
- 1:33Speaker 5: got fond memories of the king.
- 1:35Speaker 2: It's a different environment when you're actually down there. Haley'll
- 1:38Speaker 2: attest to this. You know, most people's impressions of the
- 1:41Speaker 2: Federal Parliament is what they see on question time, of course,
- 1:44Speaker 2: which is a complete charade. It's a circus and that's
- 1:47Speaker 2: the way it's supposed to be.
- 1:49Speaker 3: But do you reckon it's a more fun than that.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Sal Well, look at the end of the day, that's
- 1:53Speaker 2: when everyone's hamming it up for the cameras. And you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: that's just the way question time is. You know, it's
- 1:59Speaker 2: very adversary and that sort of stuff. But people walk
- 2:02Speaker 2: out a question time from different sides of the chamber
- 2:05Speaker 2: and go to lunch.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I have had a laugh and some of the best
- 2:09Speaker 3: on the same side of the chamber.
- 2:11Speaker 2: The best friends I made in the Federal Parliament were
- 2:13Speaker 2: from the Labour side, believe it or not. And you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: obviously I made very friends with people on my side too,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but it's it's a very collegiate sort of a place.
- 2:22Speaker 1: And then what happens, and I suppose when they're on
- 2:24Speaker 1: the same side of the party with the Gnats, they
- 2:26Speaker 1: get into a.
- 2:27Speaker 6: Bit of.
- 2:31Speaker 2: What I find so amazing is that the nt years
- 2:34Speaker 2: are scratching their head that the Seal don't want to
- 2:36Speaker 2: talk about it.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Put in a request to speak to the Senator.
- 2:41Speaker 1: You got wonder the Senator went to ground. Obviously she
- 2:45Speaker 1: is in quarantine. Us understand it. But we put in
- 2:47Speaker 1: a request to speak to her yesterday, not at all
- 2:52Speaker 1: far of his office didn't provide. Sorry, they did provide
- 2:56Speaker 1: us a statement. And then we also i'd send a
- 2:59Speaker 1: message to Jamie de Brinney from the cop and dust
- 3:02Speaker 1: whether we could get somebody from the cop on. But
- 3:05Speaker 1: I heard crickets.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Let me guess fair enough, he statement would have said, listen,
- 3:10Speaker 2: it was a private dispirit. It's all been said.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Well he said that there I don't have it in
- 3:13Speaker 1: front of me now. But yes, he said that there
- 3:15Speaker 1: had been an apology, a contrite apology.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I believe.
- 3:19Speaker 5: Well, if you're the camp, if you're the national national Secretary,
- 3:23Speaker 5: is the national Federal director federal.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Director of every so often.
- 3:30Speaker 2: I don't know whether you know anything about Jonathan Hawks,
- 3:32Speaker 2: but I know Jonathan Hawks very very well. Jonathan Hawks
- 3:36Speaker 2: worked for me. Jonathan Hawks is a territorious good guy.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He's a top guy. His father was David Hawks, who
- 3:42Speaker 2: was the Public Service Commissioner. Harley would remember him from
- 3:47Speaker 2: a long time. Jonathan Hawks a good territory boy. He
- 3:51Speaker 2: prior to this, he was a federal He was sorry
- 3:53Speaker 2: that the director of the Tasmanian Liberal Party worked at
- 3:56Speaker 2: the Minerals Council for a few years. He's a territory boy,
- 3:59Speaker 2: done well, really well. And then he's a federal director
- 4:02Speaker 2: of the National pert.
- 4:03Speaker 1: You go, well, it had been I did receive a
- 4:05Speaker 1: message from an XELP member this morning who did say
- 4:08Speaker 1: to me, imagine the outcry if the shoe was on
- 4:12Speaker 1: the other foot, or if the roles were reversed in
- 4:14Speaker 1: terms of the male allegedly, you know, swinging punches at
- 4:19Speaker 1: a female, and the outcry that there would be, which
- 4:22Speaker 1: I thought was a fair point worth making.
- 4:24Speaker 4: It's an interest now.
- 4:25Speaker 5: I was just talking to Dave as we were walking
- 4:27Speaker 5: in that no other job in Australia do you get
- 4:31Speaker 5: told nine months out from an election that you're actually
- 4:34Speaker 5: no longer going to have a job, but you're.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Expected to stay.
- 4:39Speaker 5: The pre selection battle was decided with just Iner Price.
- 4:43Speaker 5: And unless you're in that situation, how do you know
- 4:46Speaker 5: the pressure, the mental pressure that someone like the senators
- 4:50Speaker 5: under in regards to the fact she's got to keep
- 4:53Speaker 5: doing the job.
- 4:54Speaker 4: But she knows that.
- 4:55Speaker 5: The club, the party's actually lost confidence or they've decided
- 5:01Speaker 5: to go in a different direction. It'd be terrible telling
- 5:04Speaker 5: a footy coach, can you keep coaching sucking at the
- 5:08Speaker 5: end of the season.
- 5:08Speaker 2: None of them hang around.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I will say for Senator Sam McMahon is that last week,
- 5:13Speaker 1: for example, she did keep pushing through for the Territory
- 5:16Speaker 1: Rights Bill. She has continued to work quite hard. From
- 5:20Speaker 1: all accounts, certainly in that last sittings of Parliament it
- 5:23Speaker 1: came across that way.
- 5:24Speaker 3: So I will I will give her that.
- 5:26Speaker 1: I reckon that she has despite being told that she's
- 5:29Speaker 1: not going to be you know, that she wasn't going
- 5:31Speaker 1: to be pre selected. She's she's gotten stuck in there.
- 5:35Speaker 2: It's off to a t, you know, like Hailey makes
- 5:37Speaker 2: a point. It's a very good point. You know, there's
- 5:39Speaker 2: no really incentive for her to keep going, but she
- 5:42Speaker 2: is going in good honor.
- 5:44Speaker 5: And Dave and I know what it's like to lose
- 5:46Speaker 5: that federal election and it's nobody, No one from the
- 5:50Speaker 5: party rings you up. I think I had one phone
- 5:53Speaker 5: call from Paul Henderson to check on how I was going.
- 5:57Speaker 5: And you go from being the big rooster to a
- 5:59Speaker 5: feather dust during And oh, I say to people, I
- 6:02Speaker 5: only ever got sacked once in my life.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Thirty seven thousand people.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Told me to piss off in one afternoon in twenty ten,
- 6:09Speaker 5: and it's replaced. It wasn't and well it was only
- 6:14Speaker 5: thirty seven It might have been more in two thousand
- 6:16Speaker 5: and seven for you, Dave.
- 6:18Speaker 4: But that's what happens.
- 6:20Speaker 5: But no one's there to tell you, all right, what
- 6:22Speaker 5: happens life after politics. You've just got to get on
- 6:25Speaker 5: with it. And so unless you've been in that situation. Now,
- 6:28Speaker 5: I'm not condoning violence, or I'm not condoning somebody having
- 6:32Speaker 5: to go at somebody else at a Christmas party or
- 6:35Speaker 5: whatever happened. But it's all allegations and often these things
- 6:39Speaker 5: at ten thirty or eleven o'clock at night, everyone's got
- 6:42Speaker 5: a different perception of what happened. People see it from
- 6:45Speaker 5: a distance and read something into it that wasn't there,
- 6:47Speaker 5: or there was more in it. Who knows at that
- 6:49Speaker 5: hour of the night, how can you find reliable witnesses
- 6:53Speaker 5: as well that it might be a little bit a
- 6:56Speaker 5: little bit impaired.
- 6:58Speaker 1: To say, well, look, Lis a lot on the agenda
- 7:01Speaker 1: this morning, and I do want to also ask you
- 7:03Speaker 1: both about the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and senior Liberals
- 7:07Speaker 1: are openly encouraging this is being reported openly encouraging the
- 7:11Speaker 1: former New South Wales Premier Gladys spiro Jiclian to run
- 7:14Speaker 1: as the party's candidate in Warringa at next year's federal election.
- 7:18Speaker 1: So Miss Sperit Jicklian, as we all know, quit the state.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Quits the state's premier in September after being named as
- 7:24Speaker 1: the subject of an Independent Commission Against Corruption inquiry. However,
- 7:29Speaker 1: Liberal figures have been quietly sounding her out about a
- 7:32Speaker 1: tilta at federal politics, believing that she could be the
- 7:35Speaker 1: party's best chance at reclaiming the once safe seat currently
- 7:39Speaker 1: held by Independent Zali Stegel. So this is an interesting one,
- 7:44Speaker 1: particularly when you look at the fact that she stood
- 7:46Speaker 1: down as the premier because of this Ikak investigation that's
- 7:50Speaker 1: going on, and now potentially we'll going to have a
- 7:53Speaker 1: tilt at federal politics.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Wait't happen? How does don't think it will happen?
- 7:58Speaker 5: Lloy, the the baggage that unfortunately Gladys springs. You could
- 8:03Speaker 5: imagine the core flutes, imagine the signs around the pollen,
- 8:06Speaker 5: and the Independent I think has been doing a pretty
- 8:11Speaker 5: good job from what people.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Are, from what I've said.
- 8:15Speaker 5: From what job, and you would have an absolute field day.
- 8:22Speaker 5: The Premier is still in the in the eye.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Hasn't even got herself car yet, for God, and.
- 8:29Speaker 4: She's no chance of running in the seed that we're in.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Apparently there had been some polling done which did show
- 8:35Speaker 1: that that Gladys sparagically and would be able to ast
- 8:39Speaker 1: Zali Stegle with that polling. But I mean, I think
- 8:41Speaker 1: we've all known over the years that the polling can
- 8:43Speaker 1: certainly be took.
- 8:44Speaker 4: It out of a liberal branch meeting.
- 8:46Speaker 3: It's hugely popular.
- 8:47Speaker 1: I don't think that you know, whether whether we like
- 8:50Speaker 1: her or we don't like her, or whether we think
- 8:52Speaker 1: that she's done something wrong or she hasn't.
- 8:54Speaker 3: Gladys spiagically and was quite popular, you would have to.
- 8:57Speaker 2: She's very popular in particularly in South Wales and rightses
- 9:11Speaker 2: case like, she is very popular. I don't know that
- 9:16Speaker 2: there's any ever, any reason for a prime Minister and
- 9:19Speaker 2: a Treasurer to come out and endorse one particular candidate
- 9:23Speaker 2: over others. I know we're ringer. I know a couple
- 9:26Speaker 2: of people there personally who've been campaigning for the last
- 9:30Speaker 2: couple of years. You know, contrary to what Haley says,
- 9:35Speaker 2: you know, Zali Stegel is a complete nut job, but
- 9:41Speaker 2: she's a Green Zealot. She's a Green Zealot right well.
- 9:45Speaker 2: And the view is she's not very popular in the electorate.
- 9:49Speaker 2: You know, the last election was more about getting rid
- 9:51Speaker 2: of Tanny Abbott than it was about electing Zari Stegel.
- 9:55Speaker 2: And she's you know, like a lot of independence in
- 9:59Speaker 2: the Federal Parliament is lost and it really has has
- 10:02Speaker 2: had no impact whatsoever. So it's seen as a seat
- 10:06Speaker 2: that the liberals will certainly look at picking up and
- 10:10Speaker 2: you know, may well be I do know a couple
- 10:12Speaker 2: of people that are running there. Whether they put their
- 10:14Speaker 2: hand up for pre selection at the end, I don't know,
- 10:17Speaker 2: but there's been a couple of people who've been going
- 10:19Speaker 2: at least for a couple of years now, knocking on doors,
- 10:22Speaker 2: going to branch meetings, all of the things that you
- 10:24Speaker 2: do when you're sort of considering to be a candidate,
- 10:28Speaker 2: and you sort of feel for those sort of people
- 10:30Speaker 2: when you're Prime Minister and the treasurer parachute someone in,
- 10:37Speaker 2: you know, and the talk about the seats that they
- 10:39Speaker 2: were going to put her in, like you know, they
- 10:41Speaker 2: were like Wogger and you know some of these country
- 10:45Speaker 2: seats as opposed to something in the eastern suburbs of Sydney,
- 10:49Speaker 2: you know, I mean, goodness, may where does Gladys live.
- 10:52Speaker 2: Maybe we can find a.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Seat within at least one hundred k's of a house.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You know, I think everybody too hot New South. I
- 11:02Speaker 2: was realizing that Zarie Steg is probably for the boat.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Well that's too interesting way.
- 11:09Speaker 4: It's too hot at the moment, it's too close and.
- 11:14Speaker 1: You'd have a few popularity I think you're.
- 11:16Speaker 4: RPS group in the Labor Party.
- 11:19Speaker 3: That's exactly right.
- 11:20Speaker 2: They would have it.
- 11:25Speaker 4: He's looking group.
- 11:30Speaker 3: We will take a very short break. It is just
- 11:32Speaker 3: twenty minutes away from eleven o'clock.
- 11:34Speaker 1: You are listening to the Big Issues on Mix one
- 11:36Speaker 1: oh four point nine. It is fifteen minutes away from
- 11:39Speaker 1: eleven o'clock. You are listening to Mix one oh four
- 11:41Speaker 1: point nine and it's the Big Issues with Dave Tolna
- 11:44Speaker 1: and Damian Hale and a few interesting stories floating around today. Actually,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I am just reading on nine News this morning that
- 11:51Speaker 1: Australian Olympic athletes risk being caught in a Chinese backlash
- 11:56Speaker 1: if the federal government follows today's announcement by the US
- 11:59Speaker 1: of a diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Games, an
- 12:02Speaker 1: expert has warned. So the Australian government has yet to
- 12:06Speaker 1: announce if it's going to follow the US move, but
- 12:09Speaker 1: coalition MPs are understood to be pushing for similar actions.
- 12:12Speaker 1: So while a diplomatic boycott would not involve athletes, Malcolm Davis,
- 12:17Speaker 1: who's apparently a senior analyst at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute,
- 12:22Speaker 1: said that olympians competing in Beijing could then be targeted
- 12:26Speaker 1: with reprisals.
- 12:26Speaker 3: So he said that it is.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Highly likely the federal government will follow the US in
- 12:31Speaker 1: staging a diplomatic boycott, but he warned that it could
- 12:34Speaker 1: put Australian athletes at risk of Chinese sanctions, and Dr
- 12:38Speaker 1: Davis said that there would be risk to foreign athletes there.
- 12:43Speaker 1: If I was an Australian athlete, I wouldn't be going
- 12:46Speaker 1: so ahead of the US announcement, Chinese government officials warned
- 12:50Speaker 1: it would take well, it takes sort of counter measures,
- 12:54Speaker 1: resolute countermeasures against the Biden administration. If the US diplomatic
- 12:59Speaker 1: boycott went ahead.
- 13:01Speaker 3: It's a it's pretty interesting, like it's a very interesting situation.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I don't I don't know how i'd be feeling if
- 13:07Speaker 1: I was an athlete looking to go away.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Katie, I'm just curious, you know, apart from Zali Stegel
- 13:13Speaker 2: who lives on Bondai, do we have anybody else who
- 13:17Speaker 2: does Winter Olympics in this country. Well, I'm just curious.
- 13:24Speaker 2: I don't follow the Winter Olympics.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I was winter sports.
- 13:31Speaker 4: One of my face on the gold case won Olympic
- 13:36Speaker 4: gold medal.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I'll tell you what these clients coast beautiful coastal regions
- 13:40Speaker 2: with big waves in that scene to attract Winter Olympians.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Well, this is called the big issues. It's usually the
- 13:53Speaker 5: politicians boycotting.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Now you are the sports now.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Meeting.
- 14:00Speaker 2: How many Winter Olympicans running around this country.
- 14:03Speaker 4: I can see that there's.
- 14:07Speaker 5: There's an opportunity for me and you to get on
- 14:09Speaker 5: a junket to go and represent the Australian Diplomatic Corps
- 14:13Speaker 5: at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
- 14:16Speaker 2: There's probably more than in the diplomatic court than there
- 14:19Speaker 2: are in the team.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Well look, just a cross cutting measure really good skiers.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I thought there were a few really good skiers.
- 14:27Speaker 2: But I suppose the point is, like, is anybody in
- 14:29Speaker 2: the world going to notice if Australia doesn't turn out
- 14:32Speaker 2: for the Winter Olympics.
- 14:34Speaker 4: The diplomat said in the athletes.
- 14:37Speaker 5: Still, we've got four public servants that aren't going.
- 14:43Speaker 2: This is a potential to make Zari Stagger relevant.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Irrelevant today seven times never.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I'm starting to worry.
- 14:54Speaker 2: How are you thinking tuned in?
- 14:56Speaker 6: If you if you've tuned in today exactly what don't
- 15:04Speaker 6: even know her name until Dave brought it up today?
- 15:06Speaker 6: Or didn't know who the independence buddy inga was.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about something else that that is quite
- 15:12Speaker 1: interesting and following on from from Hayley's discussion a little
- 15:15Speaker 1: bit earlier about cooking steaks for people in Canberra and apparently,
- 15:21Speaker 1: well yeah, it's it's an innocent enough photo two labor
- 15:25Speaker 1: politicians enjoying a meating barbecue together on a sunny day.
- 15:29Speaker 1: But the picture of Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and the
- 15:32Speaker 1: Opposition leader Anthony Albanezi has the cynics wandering. Apparently in it,
- 15:37Speaker 1: Andrews holds tolls in one hand and a plate of
- 15:42Speaker 1: asparagus in the other, while Albany's he takes a selfie.
- 15:46Speaker 1: So is it a real picture or a photoshop job?
- 15:50Speaker 1: So people are only.
- 15:51Speaker 2: A photoshop job. But they went and got the steaks
- 15:54Speaker 2: down the street and you know, like them, they haven't
- 15:56Speaker 2: been cooked on that barbie. The barbie's never been lit
- 16:00Speaker 2: and it's just you know, this is this is one
- 16:05Speaker 2: like this is what you do when you're a hollow mean,
- 16:08Speaker 2: you make up a barbie scene.
- 16:10Speaker 4: You have ever had barbecue asparagus? That's one of my favorite.
- 16:18Speaker 3: I was going to say, I'm surprised by that. Looks Katie,
- 16:24Speaker 3: it's a real fighter.
- 16:25Speaker 1: No, it's not a real My question is why is
- 16:27Speaker 1: elboy wearing a suit at a.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Because he's a weirder just like Chim and Dean both.
- 16:34Speaker 2: It's full like if you're going to do a barbie,
- 16:38Speaker 2: surely you have a baking going.
- 16:40Speaker 3: There's no one else there, that's right.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Why wouldn't you get a photo with about four hundred.
- 16:48Speaker 1: I reckon their roommates they used to be Apparently back
- 16:52Speaker 1: in their Uni days.
- 16:53Speaker 5: They could have had a barbecue for the four hundred
- 16:55Speaker 5: loyal public servants that aren't going to Beijing.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Now, given they're both plastic, you can see they didn't.
- 17:00Speaker 4: That's that's the real issue.
- 17:03Speaker 3: You're really you're not a fan of either.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Given they both made a plastic you wouldn't want to
- 17:08Speaker 2: be like in the barbecue.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Well, Dave's on message now because our bows in front of.
- 17:13Speaker 4: The poles and so the polls. So Dave's on message.
- 17:20Speaker 5: Milly the man because we haven't got any policies.
- 17:24Speaker 3: That's about this. When do we reckon?
- 17:27Speaker 1: This federal election is going to be called early next year.
- 17:29Speaker 1: What months do you think it's going to happen.
- 17:32Speaker 4: I reckon March.
- 17:34Speaker 2: March speculator, I reckon.
- 17:37Speaker 5: No, I'm not before the budget because he doesn't have
- 17:40Speaker 5: a good story to tell on the budget you got,
- 17:45Speaker 5: he's going to eating the trillion dollars debt.
- 17:48Speaker 2: See Elbow put out his fake sort of plan from
- 17:51Speaker 2: reading meeting the targets a climate change targets.
