- 0:00Speaker 1: Now over the weekend, I was really fortunate to be
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Master of Ceremonies for the Northern Territory Sports Awards. Now,
- 0:07Speaker 1: I love my sport. I think everybody that listens to
- 0:09Speaker 1: the show knows I love my sport, but I also
- 0:12Speaker 1: love seeing juniors do really well in their sports. And
- 0:16Speaker 1: I was so impressed firstly by the list of finalists
- 0:19Speaker 1: for the Junior Sportsperson of the Year, but then when
- 0:22Speaker 1: this young woman was presented her award, I was totally
- 0:26Speaker 1: impressed by well how great she was when she got
- 0:30Speaker 1: up on stage and when she spoke about her family
- 0:33Speaker 1: and the support that she's received in doing incredibly well
- 0:36Speaker 1: with her footy. Now she isn't just an impressive young
- 0:40Speaker 1: football player, she is also a well an up and
- 0:44Speaker 1: coming umpire in the NTFL. Emma Stark joins me on
- 0:48Speaker 1: the line right now. Good morning to.
- 0:50Speaker 2: You, Emma, Good morning Katie.
- 0:52Speaker 1: How are you really well? It is lovely to have
- 0:55Speaker 1: you on the show this morning. And like I said,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I was so impressed when you got up on the
- 1:00Speaker 1: weekend and received the award for the Northern Territory Junior
- 1:03Speaker 1: Sportsperson of the Year. Emma, what was your reaction when
- 1:08Speaker 1: you won.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Oh my god, when my name looks when my name
- 1:12Speaker 2: got caught out as a finalist. First of all, I
- 1:16Speaker 2: was just still so stunned to be picked in the
- 1:18Speaker 2: top three of the anti like that just amazes me still.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But to have my name then called out as the winner,
- 1:25Speaker 2: I was just beaming. I got up on stage and
- 1:29Speaker 2: the first word I said was Wow. I couldn't believe
- 1:33Speaker 2: it. It was so awesome.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You were so impressive, and you were so gracious in
- 1:38Speaker 1: your speech, you know, in terms of thanking your coach,
- 1:41Speaker 1: thanking your fellow umpires, thanking your mom and your family,
- 1:46Speaker 1: your grandparents as well. I thought it was wonderful the
- 1:49Speaker 1: way that you jumped up there, and you were so
- 1:52Speaker 1: confident and proud of your achievements, but also humble at
- 1:55Speaker 1: the same time, which is an incredible attribute for a
- 1:59Speaker 1: sixteen year old woman.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Katie. Yeah, I just I'm still I'm
- 2:06Speaker 2: so grateful with the support that I have around me,
- 2:08Speaker 2: from family, friends, umpires, coaches, and of course everyone else.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Now, Emma sixteen years old, you have played three Premier
- 2:18Speaker 1: League games so far. I'm sure that there is plenty
- 2:21Speaker 1: more to come. But you also you madeor TiO INTFL
- 2:26Speaker 1: Men's Premier League umpiring debut when you were just fifteen
- 2:31Speaker 1: so last season.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's great. I've made my debut on the
- 2:37Speaker 2: sixteenth of October last year and then from there I
- 2:40Speaker 2: managed to actually become the youngest female field umpire, which
- 2:44Speaker 2: is crazy.
- 2:45Speaker 1: That is wild. Do you love your umpiring as much
- 2:48Speaker 1: as you love your footy?
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yeah? Look, people always ask me, They say, oh, hey, Emma,
- 2:53Speaker 2: come on sinte last do you like umpiring better? You
- 2:56Speaker 2: like playing better? And I honestly can't tell. I can't
- 2:59Speaker 2: tell them. They're answer, I love them equally as much.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And does your umpiring help your footy as well in
- 3:04Speaker 1: different ways?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Oh, one hundred percent. So, you know, being able to umpire,
- 3:10Speaker 2: so they kind of compliment each other basically, So being
- 3:13Speaker 2: able to umpire it really helps my footy in terms
- 3:17Speaker 2: of knowing the rules and knowing where the ball could
- 3:20Speaker 2: go next, and then playing footy and then being an umpire,
- 3:24Speaker 2: I know where to position myself and I get up
- 3:27Speaker 2: behind the scenes looking of the rules, which is great.
- 3:30Speaker 1: So the youngest, well were the only female as well,
- 3:34Speaker 1: Who's who's umpired at that level? When it comes to
- 3:37Speaker 1: the field umpiring.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I think I've seen a few other female field in
- 3:46Speaker 2: the Anti Filment's Premier League. But look, obviously female umpires
- 3:52Speaker 2: the percentage isn't that great at the moment, so it
- 3:54Speaker 2: would be really really good to see a rise in
- 3:57Speaker 2: that in the next couple of years.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Now, I also know that you were the TiO ntfl
- 4:03Speaker 1: Under fifteen leading goal kicker for the competition. Last season.
- 4:08Speaker 1: You kicked a whopping fifty four goals for Saint Mary's.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah that's great. Look, just being able to kick that
- 4:18Speaker 2: many goals in eleven games, it's just outstanding. Like, I
- 4:22Speaker 2: have no idea how I did that. The support of
- 4:25Speaker 2: my team was crazy.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So yeah, oh you are a legend. Now. What a
- 4:28Speaker 1: lot of people listening this morning will not know is
- 4:32Speaker 1: that you're also in mister Bayment's class on a Friday
- 4:35Speaker 1: when we do the match challenge.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Yeah so, mister bamit's from Fis Pitcher at a Lockburn
- 4:42Speaker 2: Catholic College. Yeah. Look, he's great in terms of teaching
- 4:46Speaker 2: and support. But yeah, so he actually, you know, he
- 4:50Speaker 2: goes on and he has a chat with you. I
- 4:53Speaker 2: think it's like what eleven to twelve, Yeah, yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 1: A bit after eleven.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so he actually does that during my class
- 5:01Speaker 2: every Friday, which is a wheel chuin and sometimes pretty funny.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Oh that is so cool. Well, we're gonna have to
- 5:07Speaker 1: give you all the shout out next time. We've got
- 5:09Speaker 1: him more now, Emma. I also had the privilege of
- 5:12Speaker 1: meeting your mum and your grandparents on Saturday night, and
- 5:16Speaker 1: I tell you what, what a wonderful group of people,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and how proud they are of you, and rightly so, yeah.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I know when we meet people on the night, like
- 5:27Speaker 2: they tend to, they're like, try and boast about me,
- 5:30Speaker 2: and then I'll just have a little bit of a
- 5:33Speaker 2: laugh and I'll tell them, oh, I'll tell them people
- 5:36Speaker 2: with just Matt, I'll just go, I'll give them a
- 5:38Speaker 2: nightge and say, oh, they're not proud at all, are they?
- 5:42Speaker 1: They were gorgeous. They were absolutely gorgeous. And I love
- 5:45Speaker 1: it that your grandparents listen to the show every day
- 5:48Speaker 1: as well, and they love mister Batement's Math's Challenge. But
- 5:52Speaker 1: I'll tell you what, all of that really pales in
- 5:54Speaker 1: comparison to the pride that they have for you, which
- 5:56Speaker 1: is just wonderful to see and they should be proud
- 5:59Speaker 1: of you. Like I said right at the start, you
- 6:01Speaker 1: are an incredibly impressive young woman. What you've done at
- 6:04Speaker 1: the age of sixteen is wonderful and I just think
- 6:08Speaker 1: the future is so bright for you. It's great to see.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Katie, Thank you.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So much for your time this morning. Wonderful to talk
- 6:16Speaker 1: to you and so great to meet you on the weekend.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And a massive congratulations on being named the Northern Territory
- 6:23Speaker 1: Junior Sportsperson of the Year.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Thanks so much, Katie, and thanks for having me.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Thank you
