- 0:00We're back with Dan Hurley on the Yukon men's basketball coaches showed. Mike Crispino
- 0:04and Dan. We're just talking about North Carolina. We'll get to that in
- 0:07a second. One final thought on Kansas and the Allen Field House. I've
- 0:11never been there. First time I was there, I had a great seed
- 0:13cross from you on the bench. Can you describe to Husky fans out there
- 0:18who didn't make the game, and there were a lot of Husky people that
- 0:20came out to that game, what that experience was like, because to me,
- 0:25it was unique, and to me, it's one of the best college
- 0:28atmospheres I've ever been in. Yeah, listen that they're organized. You know,
- 0:34they've got the traditions, but they're just a really smart, really organized
- 0:40fan base. I mean that first time out, I well know, I
- 0:45mean right before the opening tip, it got so loud in there that the
- 0:50huddle was tough to you know, just kind of go back through the first
- 0:53couple of possessions and offense and defense. It was hard to hear. And
- 0:59they just they're loud at all the right times, you know, and and
- 1:04and you know, they just didn't no prompting necessary, you know, it's
- 1:08like one of the few at times, I think you see a coach coach
- 1:14at home where it doesn't have to wave to the crowd to get louder because
- 1:19it can't get any louder. I know that's true. My final thought on
- 1:23is that they really gave you a hard time early with their defense. You
- 1:27kind of just couldn't get any shots have good shots up and you know,
- 1:30thankfully Tristan Newton made a couple of you know, buzzer beating trees to keep
- 1:36the thing competitive. But I like the way the team just kept scrapping,
- 1:40just kept fighting, just kept playing, and ultimately you got to lead in
- 1:44the second half. At that point, did you think we might be able
- 1:47to win this game right here? Yeah, I mean I believe we were
- 1:49going to win. I think maybe not as much early on. You know
- 1:53that there's there they were switching out and being very, very aggressive, and
- 2:00it was the first time. Even though we you know, that was what
- 2:04they were doing in every game, it's still the first time you see it.
- 2:08It's a tough thing to adjust to on the fly. You know.
- 2:13Then Adams was just you know, he was you know, he was just
- 2:15possessed. Man. He was all over the court like a defensive end,
- 2:22just like disrupting everything we were doing. So Yeah, but we gave ourselves
- 2:27chances down the stretchers actually a defense that cost us the game. Yeah,
- 2:34we gave up you know, threes to McCullough that were and Dickinson where there
- 2:40was just too easy. But had the ball, I think up five and
- 2:46don't We're gonna find a way to win it. Yeah, Tristan Newton ends
- 2:49up with thirty one and uncharacteristically, Cam Spencer goes two for I don't know,
- 2:53twelve maybe and obviously he was hobbled a couple of injured feet toes that
- 3:00were bothering him, but he bounced back. Wow. I mean in New
- 3:02York he comes up with twenty three points a great floor game. The thing
- 3:08that fans said to me after that was wow. And I love his spirit.
- 3:12He's pumping his fist, he's getting people riled up, and you know
- 3:16that you don't know when a guy comes to your program like Cam. We
- 3:20knew a lot about him what he did at Rutgers, et cetera. But
- 3:23he has fit in about as good as you could fit in for a guy
- 3:25coming to Yukon for his first time. Yeah, just I mean perfect in
- 3:31terms of the role that he wanted and what we had available, shared values
- 3:38in terms of the you know, the work ethic, the competitiveness, the
- 3:43selflessness being about winning and competing, and just you know, just basketball passion.
- 3:50You know, basketball, you know, is the number one thing in
- 3:53his life and you know, with his family and taking care of business in
- 3:57the classrooms. Just like just the perfect player to plug in, you know,
- 4:01next to Tristan in the back court, with Alex, with Donovan,
- 4:05to really give the group, you know, four high level guys and then
- 4:11obviously we've got some talent around those guys to support them. Yeah. Three
- 4:15wins at the Garden already this year, and you get the Biggies Tournament later
- 4:18in the year. You got to play Saint John's there as well. They
- 4:20didn't have a sell out there that night, but they had seventeen seventy three.
- 4:25Man, it sounded like twenty five thousand that night. I was impressed.
- 4:29But how loud that crowd was in the Garden, And I've been there
- 4:32a lot of times with big crowds, and that was one of the best.
- 4:35Yeah, great crowd and uh yeah, just a fun game. I
- 4:40think, uh, you know, Carolina plays a fun style. I think
- 4:44we play, yeah, maybe not quite as fast as them offensively, but
- 4:47people love to watch us play. They love to watch us play because because
- 4:53we play so hard and we play you know, we fly around the court,
- 4:57we move the ball on our offense, you know, and we're really
- 5:00connected and play with a ton of energy and in the place. I think,
- 5:04you know, we're developed. I think a confidence by being able to
- 5:09go three and o with MSG. You know, we've got multiple other opportunities
- 5:15that lie ahead of us. That was as good an atmosphere as you're going
- 5:17to play in on a neutral site, besides maybe an Elite eight game,
- 5:24you know, Big East, Big East Semis, Big East Finals type of
- 5:28thing. I've coached and played in those types of games. In terms of
- 5:31neutral site games, it's it's hard to top that. And it was funny
- 5:36Dan, the former coaches who are now sitting in the broadcast booth doing TV
- 5:42for these games, when they come in to watch Yukon, they're always praising,
- 5:46you know, the style and the way they play, love the way
- 5:48they share the ball, all that stuff. It's it's very you know,
- 5:51like raptory comes in or Steve Lapis, whoever's working a game, and they're
- 5:57all vin Fares, they're all talking about the style that Yukon plays, and
- 6:00I think it's it's kind of a it's a fun not just fun, but
- 6:04it's just entertaining because everyone's involved. You don't know who might have a big
- 6:09day. It could be Caravan, it could be Spencer, could be Newton,
- 6:14it could be Solo Ball up the bench. Let's talk about him for
- 6:16a second. Thirteen in that game at the Garden, and there were some
- 6:20needed plays by him, a freshman who's getting some starts here and he's been
- 6:25delivering. Yeah, I mean he's he's doing and I think, you know,
- 6:30Steph gets healthy, he'll you know, he'll be in a similar situation
- 6:33where he's you know, he's solid out there defensively, he's you know,
- 6:39he's he's given us some some rebounding. He's not hurting us, he's not
- 6:43making a ton of mistakes, which is, you know what what keeps freshmen
- 6:47on the bench. And and then a freshman are playing a lot that usually
- 6:51means that it's not going well. And you could see it across our sport
- 6:58just how many freshmen are struggling us the country and and uh, you know,
- 7:01but he's an outlier because of his maturity, you know, the type
- 7:05of person he is, the way he was raised. Uh, you know,
- 7:10he's he's he wants to have you know, he's doing all the little
- 7:13things to help the team. And and then obviously he takes a lot of
- 7:16confidence from making some big threes in that game and you'll be able to you
- 7:21know, to get to the paint and score some baskets and uh, you
- 7:26know, I think this whole season is going to come down to to depth
- 7:30for us and whether we get that production you know, from the bench,
- 7:34and uh, certainly Solo and Steph and Hassan and Samson like you know,
- 7:41us being able to go nine deep, eight nine deep is critical and uh
- 7:46Samson and uh excuse me, Solo is a huge part of that. Yeah.
- 7:49And Jalen Stewart too, We'll get to him. We'll talk about Yukon's
- 7:53bench, big difference in North Carolina game. We'll come back in a moment.
- 7:56You're listening to the Yukon Basketball Coaches Show on Lirfield. H
