- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to on Base Live in your Bleacher Report app.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I am your host, Smookie Betts, and today we had
- 0:05Speaker 1: my boy Lars noot Bar first, the first cardinal on
- 0:11Speaker 1: the show. How you doing, Bro, I'm good man. That's cool.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I didn't I mean, I could have guessed that, but
- 0:17Speaker 2: it's it's cool to officially hear that.
- 0:19Speaker 1: So I remember, you know, when I first started and
- 0:25Speaker 1: you came up to me and said you had watched it,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and then you didn't really want to come on the show.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Why why didn't you Why didn't you really want to
- 0:32Speaker 1: do it?
- 0:33Speaker 2: At the time, Bro, I was still hesitant this time around,
- 0:36Speaker 2: but I just felt like I hadn't done anything, you know,
- 0:41Speaker 2: and like you, that was I think in twenty two
- 0:44Speaker 2: when you guys came to Saint Louis and I said
- 0:46Speaker 2: that to you. I remember doing it too, and you know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: you just don't want to be that guy that's you know,
- 0:54Speaker 2: fresh in second year being like, oh yeah, I'm on
- 0:57Speaker 2: Mookie's podcast. And that year too, we had Nato Goldie's MVP.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Year, we got.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Albergoing for seven hundred like a little you know, rookie
- 1:06Speaker 2: like going.
- 1:07Speaker 1: That makes sense. I get in the unwritten rural space
- 1:11Speaker 1: of baseball that definitely fell into it. So shout out
- 1:15Speaker 1: to you for for a following that. Okay, So I
- 1:18Speaker 1: have a game called on Base and off Base that
- 1:23Speaker 1: I play. It's whether you're in or out. And so
- 1:25Speaker 1: I got a couple of things for you. Saint Louis
- 1:27Speaker 1: style pizza is better than Chicago style pizza. Learn me
- 1:34Speaker 1: about Saint Louis style pizza. Because I thought Saint Louis
- 1:37Speaker 1: was like the home of ReBs Barbigue. What I'm saying, yeah,
- 1:40Speaker 1: not pizza.
- 1:41Speaker 2: No, I don't think it's the home of pizza. I
- 1:45Speaker 2: don't think people are not gonna like this, but I
- 1:48Speaker 2: don't think Saint Louis style pizza like they love Emos.
- 1:53Speaker 1: I don't know if you had Emos. What's Emos.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I'm gonna get a lot of heat for this, But
- 1:58Speaker 2: Emos is not my favorite.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It's a restaurant.
- 2:02Speaker 2: It's it's like a chain pizza place.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay, okay, it's not your favorite. It's not
- 2:07Speaker 1: my favorite. So you're not going to get endorsement deal
- 2:09Speaker 1: with them. By the way, just by saying this, I
- 2:11Speaker 1: mean it's okay.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Though yeah, probably not, probably not, But deep dish, though
- 2:17Speaker 2: I'm not a huge fan of deep dish either, but
- 2:19Speaker 2: I'll say Chicago, you know what, I'll say, Saint.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Louis is better.
- 2:22Speaker 2: I'm on base, so you're on base with Louis style
- 2:25Speaker 2: is better than Chicago.
- 2:26Speaker 1: But you're not deep dish. So you like New York pizza,
- 2:29Speaker 1: New York pizza, you like the flat you like do
- 2:31Speaker 1: you fold it? Yes? Okay? Yeah, okay, you vote? Do
- 2:36Speaker 1: you dip it? In South?
- 2:37Speaker 2: So I didn't even realize we're doing like a Saint
- 2:39Speaker 2: Luis co. Yes, I am on base at shant. Louis
- 2:41Speaker 2: style is better than Chicago's.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Okay, it's all good. It's like good, we're gonna walk
- 2:45Speaker 1: it through it, but we're gonna be all right. So okay,
- 2:47Speaker 1: So the next thing you can hurdle a guy to
- 2:53Speaker 1: get the first base hurdle something, I'm on base with that. Yeah,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I think so too. That's a tough it's tough to
- 2:59Speaker 1: do running down you see Wyatt Langford. Oh yeah, you
- 3:02Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. Yeah, I see that. That's some
- 3:04Speaker 1: athletic stuff people don't realize, Like when you're running and
- 3:07Speaker 1: the the tow on first to the next stride and
- 3:13Speaker 1: he stayed. You know what I'm saying, this is a
- 3:14Speaker 1: pretty athletic move. Have you ever done anything like this
- 3:16Speaker 1: going to first bait?
- 3:17Speaker 2: No, not going to first bait, and for him to
- 3:20Speaker 2: do it on a split second notice, like yeah, like
- 3:24Speaker 2: that's that's impressive. Yeah, if you could do that, if
- 3:27Speaker 2: you can pull that off, I'm on base with.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That for sure. See, like I feel like I'm just
- 3:32Speaker 1: gonna be out the chances of me pulling that off successful.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I think I can do it. But like we just
- 3:40Speaker 1: played him. Man, he's a freak. He's dude, he is
- 3:42Speaker 1: you know, he's Yeah, he can move. He's thick, Like yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 1: he's got some thump too, Like you know, how to
- 3:48Speaker 1: play the game baseball. He's really good. Okay, last one
- 3:52Speaker 1: you watch basketball. Tyrese Halliburton is the most clutch, clutch
- 3:57Speaker 1: player in sports right now? In sports. Yeah, I mean
- 4:03Speaker 1: he's putting up an argument. I mean we I feel
- 4:06Speaker 1: like we got to ride the wave right now. I mean,
- 4:08Speaker 1: look what he's like, he's hit the shot every time.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Yeah this year, how about this year?
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, this year, no doubt. You know, like he's riding
- 4:17Speaker 2: the wave. Remember like Dame time when he was Yeah, time. Yeah,
- 4:21Speaker 2: but the fact that he's doing this in the finals,
- 4:25Speaker 2: they're a huge underdog. I'll give it to him. Yeah
- 4:27Speaker 2: for sure this year. Absolutely, I'm on base with that.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah. I had a game yesterday, right yeah. Yeah, So
- 4:32Speaker 1: you didn't get to watch it. I got we saw
- 4:33Speaker 1: the ending. Ok, yeah, the end. I was like, man, yeah, like, uh,
- 4:40Speaker 1: he didn't even score the last four or five possessions
- 4:43Speaker 1: and then boom the final one he got the ball.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He had what sixteen all night? Right, Yeah, that's coming
- 4:48Speaker 1: out of the biggest time, you know what I'm saying, right, So, yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 1: that's that's being clutched. All right. So what about this,
- 4:54Speaker 1: let's switch gears a little bit. You're you're hitting leadoff.
- 4:58Speaker 1: How is that for you? I mean I want to
- 5:00Speaker 1: about that because there's a there's an art to it.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, yeah, you know, it's it's cool, man.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Obviously.
- 5:06Speaker 2: What's crazy is you know, as you know, like when
- 5:09Speaker 2: you're hitting there two or three wherever, you know, like
- 5:13Speaker 2: you're you feel like you're getting that bat every inning
- 5:16Speaker 2: until like the sixth inning, like you're like, you know,
- 5:18Speaker 2: whether you're in the hole, on deck or hitting, you're
- 5:21Speaker 2: always there. And for me, I'm more of like old
- 5:26Speaker 2: school when it comes to that. What I like to
- 5:28Speaker 2: see like pitches generally, you know. And so for the
- 5:31Speaker 2: first month I was walking like crazy to live.
- 5:34Speaker 1: It was like eleven walks to eleven walk Yeah, game opening, right,
- 5:38Speaker 1: So usually did like a game opening walk, like, oh,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I feels so good, Yeah, no doubt.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Like I'm like, I'm on first base, we got nobody out,
- 5:47Speaker 2: and like, I mean, the arms that we're facing now
- 5:50Speaker 2: are nasty.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So you're like, all right, one of those out of
- 5:53Speaker 1: the way right there.
- 5:54Speaker 2: You know, You're like all right, like whatever, if it's
- 5:56Speaker 2: the GRAM or something, you're like, okay, yeah, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 2: you're on for base. You're helping the team out, you know,
- 6:02Speaker 2: whether it's Mason or Wilson coming up behind me. Donnie's
- 6:04Speaker 2: obviously having a great year. But it's just, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I don't know, man, you kind of have a different
- 6:09Speaker 2: approach about it, but you try not to think about
- 6:12Speaker 2: it too much because then you can get a little passive.
- 6:14Speaker 1: What about like show Hay's version of leadoff. Yeah, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: feel like you gotta be show Hay to do that though, exactly,
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Right, and it's like, yeah, if I can I saw
- 6:26Speaker 2: him the other day. It was it was ninety seven
- 6:29Speaker 2: off in first pitch of the game when you guys
- 6:31Speaker 2: were in Cleveland, and he went like one fifth, yeah,
- 6:34Speaker 2: and I'm like, all right, I like, I don't know
- 6:38Speaker 2: if that's in my bag. So it's like I'm gonna
- 6:40Speaker 2: you know, I'm gonna do what I think I can
- 6:42Speaker 2: do well and see some pitches, know the zone a
- 6:44Speaker 2: little bit.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But you're right, like when Rizzo was doing it in.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Chicago for that little bit of time when he was
- 6:49Speaker 2: doing it, you know, Jock was doing it for a
- 6:50Speaker 2: little bit, and you know, I think you just have
- 6:53Speaker 2: to know your game and then kind of like really
- 6:56Speaker 2: dive into that when you're in the lead off spot.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and like you know, hitting leadoff for so long
- 7:01Speaker 1: for me, now that I hit second.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Right, well, yeah, what's that transition Like it's it's it's
- 7:07Speaker 3: it's hard for me sometimes because show Hey, I want
- 7:12Speaker 3: him to swing as much as possible, like he should.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want him to go up there
- 7:18Speaker 1: and walk. They're gonna walk him. Of course, I wholeheartedly
- 7:21Speaker 1: understand it. I wouldn't pitch to him either, but you know,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I want him to swing and then obviously with Freddy
- 7:27Speaker 1: behind me, I want him to swing, you know what
- 7:30Speaker 1: I'm saying. I want these guys to swing as much
- 7:32Speaker 1: as possible. And I'm so used to how I grew
- 7:37Speaker 1: up is the same way you grew up as a
- 7:40Speaker 1: leadoff hitter. Like we're kind of trying to see pitches,
- 7:42Speaker 1: work your bat, get into the game a little bit,
- 7:45Speaker 1: because like five and six pitch innings was not a thing.
- 7:48Speaker 2: And I don't know about for you guys when I
- 7:50Speaker 2: was in like Litterle League and stuff going up, they
- 7:51Speaker 2: have pitch counts too, so so.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean for you that's gotta I mean, you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: it's kind of tough to know, but I think I
- 8:05Speaker 1: take I take responsibility and just kind of do it.
- 8:09Speaker 1: But I don't know, like some part of me is
- 8:11Speaker 1: like it don't really matter because the picture is going
- 8:15Speaker 1: to go, you know, eighty ninety pitches and whoever comes
- 8:18Speaker 1: in after is gonna be throwing one hundreds, you know
- 8:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And so it's like you might as
- 8:23Speaker 1: well just get your swings off. So I don't know,
- 8:26Speaker 1: I'm kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, with it, so no, I know, and
- 8:31Speaker 2: I mean does it easy? Does it free you up?
- 8:33Speaker 2: When show hey goes big fly or single or.
- 8:37Speaker 1: That makes it? That makes it a lot easier. That
- 8:39Speaker 1: makes it a lot easier. But like he you know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: gets out on right one or two pitches to one
- 8:44Speaker 1: or two pitches, and it's like, man, you're in your
- 8:47Speaker 1: head a little bit. Yeah, as soon as I've learned,
- 8:50Speaker 1: like as soon as I start to get in my
- 8:52Speaker 1: head thinking about it, shut it down. Take it. I
- 8:56Speaker 1: take it. Yeah, me too, I'm the same way like it. Yeah,
- 8:59Speaker 1: because it's like when you you're just a little in
- 9:01Speaker 1: between and you don't know if you want to swing
- 9:03Speaker 1: at this picture or not. You can get a ticlate yep,
- 9:06Speaker 1: and you're gonna just miss it or whatever it is.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And so I've learned to, uh to shut it down.
- 9:12Speaker 1: But I mean, I don't know. We'll see, We'll see
- 9:13Speaker 1: if I can change my ways get some swings.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I'm going to hitters me today, be like Hey pictures
- 9:19Speaker 2: show he gets down on one pitch, grew that.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Thing down in the middle movie in his half thinking
- 9:23Speaker 1: about it. All right, So I do want to talk
- 9:27Speaker 1: a little bit about you. You play in the WBC
- 9:32Speaker 1: for Team Japan. Your mom is Japanese Japanese, and so
- 9:36Speaker 1: how is how was that? How was that? Growing up?
- 9:39Speaker 1: It was cool?
- 9:40Speaker 2: Man, it was a like for me, it was the norm.
- 9:44Speaker 2: But I think the more I left home, and you know,
- 9:50Speaker 2: I understood like the bicultural nature of like my household,
- 9:53Speaker 2: right like, huh, coming in, there's a little room where
- 9:56Speaker 2: you put your shoes right away, like there are no
- 9:59Speaker 2: shoes in the house.
- 10:01Speaker 1: You know.
- 10:01Speaker 2: My mom was always cooking up like very traditional Japanese
- 10:04Speaker 2: meals and a lot of the rules that we had
- 10:08Speaker 2: were very like, you know, standard for Japanese, and so.
- 10:14Speaker 1: It was normal for me.
- 10:15Speaker 2: But I think once I started grow up and then
- 10:18Speaker 2: learn more about my buddies and stuff like, it wasn't
- 10:21Speaker 2: necessarily the norm. But that's all she knew growing up,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you know, and she came here and then her mom
- 10:28Speaker 2: and her dad are still in Japan, her sisters are
- 10:30Speaker 2: in Japan, and her entire family is still in Japan.
- 10:33Speaker 1: And so do you go back and see them? Yeah,
- 10:36Speaker 1: so yeah.
- 10:37Speaker 2: So so growing up we would go like once a year,
- 10:39Speaker 2: and then once my brother got into high school, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 2: with sports and everything like that, it.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Was getting tough.
- 10:45Speaker 2: And then when I got to high school, they came
- 10:47Speaker 2: over to the States and hung out with us, and
- 10:51Speaker 2: so were able to do that. But then when the
- 10:54Speaker 2: WBC happened, we were really able to Like they were
- 10:57Speaker 2: able to see me play for the first time, and
- 11:00Speaker 2: we were able to go over there and hang out.
- 11:02Speaker 2: And then now I go once a year and it's
- 11:04Speaker 2: kind of the cool thing is it's like it's kind
- 11:06Speaker 2: of you know, like connected our family, you know, more
- 11:09Speaker 2: so than we ever had.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Oh so it ended up being inadvertently doing something like that,
- 11:15Speaker 1: no doubt, Like, and we communicate more like my mom
- 11:18Speaker 1: always talked to them, but.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Like for me, I mean, I can't say I communicate
- 11:22Speaker 2: with them because I don't speak Javanese, but like I
- 11:24Speaker 2: go there and see them, and we're able to hang out,
- 11:27Speaker 2: and whether it's my mom or somebody from the agency
- 11:30Speaker 2: that we fly over there with, like I'm spending time
- 11:33Speaker 2: with them, seeing them, getting FaceTime with them, and like,
- 11:35Speaker 2: you know, my grandparents are getting older, so it's cool
- 11:38Speaker 2: to be able to to.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Spend So how does that conversation go if y'all can't speak?
- 11:41Speaker 1: Like is it just because I know, like when I
- 11:44Speaker 1: went to Japan, it's like you smile. Yeah, right, but
- 11:48Speaker 1: this is your family, so how you do that with
- 11:50Speaker 1: your family? So it was so funny.
- 11:52Speaker 2: So we went there last off season and my grandpa
- 11:56Speaker 2: can't hear that well, so I'm I'm talking, so I'm
- 12:00Speaker 2: looking at my aunt. But my our interpreter from our
- 12:04Speaker 2: agencies there, who you know, has worked with Yamamode and
- 12:07Speaker 2: Rookie in them, and you know, so he's translated to
- 12:11Speaker 2: my aunt. My cousin is sitting there with her baby,
- 12:16Speaker 2: and they bring a whiteboard in a marker everywhere, and
- 12:18Speaker 2: she's writing it down and then showing my grandpa. My
- 12:22Speaker 2: grandpa then reads it, laughs, does whatever, says something back
- 12:26Speaker 2: and then it's like so it was like five different
- 12:28Speaker 2: people are translating this thing, but you know, it's all
- 12:32Speaker 2: her family.
- 12:32Speaker 1: We loved it.
- 12:33Speaker 2: It was great, you know, but and then sometimes you know,
- 12:36Speaker 2: like my aunt or whatever wouldn't even respond and tell
- 12:38Speaker 2: my grandpa what they were saying because she was like,
- 12:40Speaker 2: you know, and I'm over it. But but yeah, it's
- 12:43Speaker 2: it's a process for sure.
- 12:45Speaker 1: So because of the WBC, i'ing can say because of
- 12:47Speaker 1: w BC, but it played a part. You uh, you're
- 12:52Speaker 1: like fame level shot through the roof, you could say,
- 12:55Speaker 1: because of the w Yeah. So, uh, tell me about
- 12:59Speaker 1: your experience at the WBC, you know, getting to play there,
- 13:02Speaker 1: getting to play in front of your family, getting to
- 13:04Speaker 1: play with show Hey yeah you know and Yoshi I guess,
- 13:07Speaker 1: yeah right, Roki Brokie you got to play it all
- 13:09Speaker 1: these guys.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it was amazing.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Were you nervous? Super nervous? Me too when I'm my person.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Super nervous, like you're going over there obviously being you
- 13:20Speaker 2: know Tommy too. Tommy was the first American play over there,
- 13:23Speaker 2: and so I was. I was the first American born Japanese.
- 13:26Speaker 2: And my mom was like, listen, there's certain things like
- 13:28Speaker 2: you gotta like you can and cannot do. It's I'm
- 13:32Speaker 2: on the flight over and I'm like, dude, I cannot
- 13:34Speaker 2: embarrass my family, Like I cannot let Japan down my family,
- 13:38Speaker 2: Like this cannot go bad. Like if we lose, we lose.
- 13:41Speaker 2: But like I can't do anything to like disrespect my family.
- 13:44Speaker 1: What could that possibly be?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Just mannerisms like the way you act, slam your hamlet
- 13:50Speaker 2: or something, do something like that, or even like you know,
- 13:54Speaker 2: like simple right during the national anthem. Just like my
- 13:58Speaker 2: mom is like make sure you're you're doing all the
- 14:00Speaker 2: right things, like mmm, she's you know, because she's like
- 14:03Speaker 2: it's you know, the rules are different over there, you know,
- 14:07Speaker 2: so I'm nervous and there she's like you better be
- 14:09Speaker 2: respected for the team.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Everybody like they are.
- 14:12Speaker 2: All more important than you, you know, like kind of
- 14:15Speaker 2: like you're like you're the guest. And I'm like all right,
- 14:16Speaker 2: you know, and I get over there and show he
- 14:20Speaker 2: comes over and he's like, hey, how's your family?
- 14:22Speaker 1: And I'm like good.
- 14:23Speaker 2: And then as I'm getting closer to these guys, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 2: like yo, she's taking me out to eat and I'm
- 14:28Speaker 2: talking to them and I was like, hey, like you know,
- 14:31Speaker 2: my mom's telling me we're going to be bound to
- 14:32Speaker 2: the field and you know, before and after practice, and
- 14:35Speaker 2: I was like, are we going to be doing that?
- 14:36Speaker 1: And they're like laughing, like, bro, your mom is so.
- 14:39Speaker 2: Old school, like we don't do none of that. Well,
- 14:41Speaker 2: like you know, it's more relaxed. I was like, oh, okay,
- 14:43Speaker 2: good And you know, that part of it was cool,
- 14:46Speaker 2: but you know it was what was really cool was
- 14:49Speaker 2: that everybody saw a show hey like do his thing
- 14:53Speaker 2: and you know with the angels and stuff. But I
- 14:55Speaker 2: feel like I benefited greatly from the WBC, but I
- 14:58Speaker 2: thought he did too, Like with the Trout and him
- 15:01Speaker 2: battle at the end, you know, next year he goes
- 15:04Speaker 2: out wins a l MVP unanimously and seeing him like
- 15:09Speaker 2: take BP because I don't know how often he takes VP, right,
- 15:12Speaker 2: he never does, but I mean he did it? Did
- 15:14Speaker 2: he do it for the Tokyo series when when you know.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Now it was just too much, Like for him, it's
- 15:20Speaker 1: really just too much. He can't really like take steps
- 15:24Speaker 1: and there is like everybody in the world wants to
- 15:27Speaker 1: be famous, right, yeah, until you see a famous person
- 15:31Speaker 1: have to live how they have to live their life,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and how show Hal has lived is like, man, that
- 15:35Speaker 1: kind of sucks.
- 15:36Speaker 2: Like the doc, the MJ doc that came out during
- 15:39Speaker 2: COVID where he's sitting there smoking cigar, like I can't leave,
- 15:43Speaker 2: Like that's really.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Him, that's show. That's yeah, that's literally him, and you know,
- 15:49Speaker 1: but it is what I mean.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Listen, he handles it obviously amazingly and he's happy and
- 15:54Speaker 2: you know, does everything. But yeah, in Japan, it's like
- 15:57Speaker 2: he cannot move.
- 15:59Speaker 1: It's crazy. Tell me about that that battle, Like did
- 16:01Speaker 1: you even think about especially that ninth inning with show
- 16:04Speaker 1: Hate taking the mount, like being on Show Hay team. Now,
- 16:09Speaker 1: if there was a ninth inning with show Hate taking
- 16:11Speaker 1: it taking the mound, I couldn't be more positive that
- 16:14Speaker 1: we won. So that you that you're gonna win. Oh,
- 16:19Speaker 1: that Japan was gonna win. Yes, Oh okay. So I'm
- 16:21Speaker 1: saying from your like on the Dodgers, I'm saying right
- 16:23Speaker 1: on the Dodgers right now, if Show he took them
- 16:24Speaker 1: mount on the ninth inning, we're winning. We won. Yeah,
- 16:27Speaker 1: So I want to hear you like your perspective from yeah,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you know, we're not just about Show hey, but your perspective.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Yeah, right, Like he's coming in the game and it
- 16:36Speaker 2: feels like this surreal moment, Like in the moment, you're like, wait,
- 16:39Speaker 2: this is like what is going on right now? Like
- 16:41Speaker 2: this is crazy and he's he's jogging out and you're like,
- 16:45Speaker 2: this guy is a freak. But you're right, Like I
- 16:47Speaker 2: was like in that moment, I was like, I don't
- 16:48Speaker 2: know anybody else in the world after seeing him for
- 16:51Speaker 2: the past two to three weeks that I would want
- 16:53Speaker 2: being on this mount. And so he goes out there whatever,
- 16:58Speaker 2: and then you know, gets to Trout.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and it was oh McNeil walked, I hit into
- 17:07Speaker 1: a double play and then you leading off and McNeil
- 17:11Speaker 1: was nine whole. You were one to Goldie three. Yeah,
- 17:14Speaker 1: there you go.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Yeah whatever, So everybody's excited, right, we get to out.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Everybody's excited, and I'm looking around. I'm like, yo, I
- 17:20Speaker 2: don't think you guys realized like this Mike Trout, like
- 17:24Speaker 2: you know.
- 17:24Speaker 1: What I mean, like even it will even like even
- 17:27Speaker 1: if something.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Happens with Mike Trout, like we got Goldie, who's the MVP.
- 17:31Speaker 2: It was it for you know, raigning MVP, and then
- 17:32Speaker 2: we got an Otto or Shore or whoever it was.
- 17:34Speaker 2: And I'm like, so I'm sitting there like, oh my god.
- 17:37Speaker 2: And then they start going at it and then I'm
- 17:39Speaker 2: seeing show hit one hundred, one hundred and one two
- 17:41Speaker 2: and yeah, bad.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Ripping, nasty. I'm like, oh my goodness.
- 17:44Speaker 2: And I'm in the outfield like focused, but at the
- 17:47Speaker 2: same time, like I'm like a fan, Yeah, this is crazy.
- 17:51Speaker 2: And you know he hit him with like a eighty
- 17:54Speaker 2: seven eighty eight hour sweeper that broke.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Like twenty feet yeah whatever, and so whatever I mean,
- 18:00Speaker 1: Like I mean, it's just he's a free Yeah. I
- 18:02Speaker 1: mean that's all you can really say. You know, so
- 18:05Speaker 1: what do you have? Where's your gold medal? Now?
- 18:08Speaker 2: At my parents' house? Okay, yeah I gave I gave
- 18:10Speaker 2: that one of my moms.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Nice. Okay, so she keeps it, she keeps it. Yeah.
- 18:13Speaker 2: I mean that that was like a like oh to her.
- 18:17Speaker 2: She I felt like she deserved it, you know, because
- 18:19Speaker 2: without her, I'm not eligible for the team. You know.
- 18:23Speaker 1: So are you going to play again?
- 18:24Speaker 2: I hope so yeah, I would like to. I would
- 18:27Speaker 2: like to. And it seems like are you yeah?
- 18:30Speaker 1: I mean yeah, yeah, I'm I think that playing and
- 18:35Speaker 1: that is you know, are you? I think it's the
- 18:40Speaker 1: most fun I've ever really had playing baseball. Like, you know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: I never really get that atmosphere that much. Yeah, games
- 18:45Speaker 1: that like we play one hundred and sixty two, like
- 18:49Speaker 1: those games are like every game meant something. You know,
- 18:51Speaker 1: you're only playing but two weeks worth the ball really.
- 18:53Speaker 2: So that that court of was it a quarter finals
- 18:57Speaker 2: against oh Venezuela?
- 19:00Speaker 1: Turn hit oh man, dude, because we were hurt because
- 19:03Speaker 1: I think if we lost, we were out. We were out. Yeah,
- 19:06Speaker 1: So like we're down and you feel it like you
- 19:09Speaker 1: can feel it because both teams are, you know, giving
- 19:12Speaker 1: it everything they got and they they they were up
- 19:16Speaker 1: and you could feel it. And we just started kind
- 19:18Speaker 1: of slowly built the inning, built the inning, and then
- 19:22Speaker 1: you just get to a spot where you just need
- 19:24Speaker 1: something to happen, right, you just and Homer was like
- 19:29Speaker 1: not in anybody's real cards, but Homer. And then that's
- 19:34Speaker 1: when that's probably that moment is probably some of the
- 19:37Speaker 1: most joyous. You know, I had my my I was
- 19:42Speaker 1: on deck, I think I was. Yeah, I was on deck,
- 19:46Speaker 1: so I was hitting next, and I remember like not
- 19:51Speaker 1: even focusing on hitting because it was I was so
- 19:55Speaker 1: emotional from that just happened. What just happened?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yes, I remember, I mean seeing your whole team, like
- 20:01Speaker 2: at home play. It's like literal league style, like for
- 20:04Speaker 2: the fans that don't understand, like, oh, the WBC doesn't
- 20:07Speaker 2: mean that much, like watch players and their reactions during
- 20:12Speaker 2: that tournament and tell us that it doesn't really matter
- 20:15Speaker 2: to us at least, like maybe it doesn't matter as
- 20:18Speaker 2: much that you guys, but like for the players, we're
- 20:20Speaker 2: not getting paid, no, we're not going to matter about it,
- 20:22Speaker 2: and it's just strictly ball it's.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Pure fun and just like for your country. Yeah, you
- 20:28Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. And so like if you hit
- 20:30Speaker 1: a if I hit a leadoff homer or show he
- 20:33Speaker 1: hit a lead off home or whatever, now clap, boom, boom.
- 20:38Speaker 1: But if you hit a leadoff homer in the WBC's nuts,
- 20:40Speaker 1: oh my gosh. You know. Yeah, it's the same thing,
- 20:43Speaker 1: completely different. So, and I do want to tell you
- 20:48Speaker 1: enjoy golf. You're a golfer. Yeah, what's your handicap?
- 20:53Speaker 2: I've been at about it sixteen to eighteen, like two
- 20:57Speaker 2: three years.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Now. You don't have you don't give golf lessons. Nah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: that's the only you're gonna Part of me is like stubborn.
- 21:06Speaker 2: The only golf lessons I get is when I go
- 21:07Speaker 2: play with Nato, okay, and he and he'll help me out.
- 21:11Speaker 2: But sometimes I'll get so frustrated out there.
- 21:12Speaker 1: I'll be like, oh, yeah, shut up, like shut up,
- 21:15Speaker 1: I want to do it.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And there was one time he was giving me golf
- 21:17Speaker 2: lessons and it was working and I look, I look
- 21:20Speaker 2: at Pedro has our catcher, and I was like, I'm
- 21:22Speaker 2: so mad, this.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Is working right now. I was just so upset. You're
- 21:26Speaker 1: mad yeah, but he knows, you know, he's he knows.
- 21:30Speaker 1: And you got to play in uh a pro am
- 21:33Speaker 1: the farmers Farmers Insurance insurance. How was that? Were you
- 21:36Speaker 1: nervous to play in that? Oh? I feel like I
- 21:38Speaker 1: was probably more nervous doing that. Then what did you play?
- 21:41Speaker 1: I played in pebble Beach? Bro Oh did you? And
- 21:43Speaker 1: I got to do that? And so tell me how
- 21:45Speaker 1: did you play?
- 21:45Speaker 2: During the So we played a shamble, So it wasn't
- 21:50Speaker 2: like that pressure. But I didn't know we were playing
- 21:52Speaker 2: a shamble until like the sixth hole. I was like,
- 21:53Speaker 2: why is there? Like, what are the rules here? It
- 21:56Speaker 2: took you that look, yeah it took me a while, brood,
- 22:00Speaker 2: but ah, so how you check? The fullback for the
- 22:04Speaker 2: forty nine ers was was in our group and we
- 22:07Speaker 2: got to talking and Obert Ludwig it was it was
- 22:11Speaker 2: the pro in our in our group, and so I
- 22:13Speaker 2: was like, geez, like this is crazy. But I was
- 22:15Speaker 2: talking to Kyle's like, you know how you feeling. He's like,
- 22:17Speaker 2: I'm not nervous, bro, Like I did the one in
- 22:19Speaker 2: what's theone in like Lake Tahoe? Yeah, crazy one. He's like,
- 22:23Speaker 2: so this is nothing is a cakewalk. He goes out there,
- 22:26Speaker 2: it hits one, like decent but not great, and he
- 22:28Speaker 2: walks over to me and I'm going, like, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 2: a couple in a couple of people.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I was like, how'd you feel? He's like, Bro, I
- 22:33Speaker 1: got nervous.
- 22:34Speaker 2: I was like, I told you, bro, I was like,
- 22:36Speaker 2: I told you. I was like, I'm just being honest,
- 22:38Speaker 2: like I'm nervous right now. I get over there, I
- 22:39Speaker 2: went okay. But you know, after that, you know, it
- 22:42Speaker 2: kind of the it left me. But yeah, like leading
- 22:45Speaker 2: up to the event, you know, it's like a you know,
- 22:48Speaker 2: it's a who's who over there, you know, and you're
- 22:50Speaker 2: just like, oh geez.
- 22:52Speaker 1: And I suck at golf. So it's like I can't
- 22:54Speaker 1: even be confident in my game, you know. But yeah,
- 22:57Speaker 1: it was. It was. It was a lot of fun. Though.
- 22:59Speaker 2: You guys play stupid. So how much golf do you
- 23:02Speaker 2: get to play? I'll probably get in the most rounds
- 23:07Speaker 2: I get in? Is Thereny swing training?
- 23:08Speaker 1: Oh okay? Yeah? Yeah? Where are you in the off season?
- 23:13Speaker 1: L A Orange County? Nice? Okay, So when you're I'm
- 23:16Speaker 1: gonna take you to golf while you're out there? Yeah,
- 23:18Speaker 1: where where where are you lakeside? Shout out to lakeside.
- 23:21Speaker 2: That's my lakeside, that's my I played there before. There
- 23:24Speaker 2: you go, my buddies, my buddy's boss is a member there.
- 23:27Speaker 1: The place is unreal. Yeah, that's my spot, unreal spot.
- 23:30Speaker 1: And so yeah, I'm gonna take you out there, sick,
- 23:32Speaker 1: and we're gonna get We've got to get you down from.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, it's been there for too long.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Okay. So let's go back to when you were a kid. Man.
- 23:42Speaker 1: So you're from out west and you grew up playing
- 23:47Speaker 1: what what sports did you play growing up? Growing up?
- 23:50Speaker 2: Everything that would be football, baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Hockey, swam?
- 23:55Speaker 2: Yeah, Sam, I mean so I'm in Nelson gund Okay,
- 23:59Speaker 2: so the King's practice stillity, you know, obviously we're by
- 24:03Speaker 2: the beach.
- 24:04Speaker 1: So uh yeah, you did all that surf. Yeah, g
- 24:09Speaker 1: he was just going. You was you was never at home, no, never, no,
- 24:13Speaker 1: never at home. Okay, So what was your favorites?
- 24:18Speaker 2: Baseball was my favorite. Football in high school was the
- 24:21Speaker 2: most fun. Pick up basketball pickup was like that was
- 24:26Speaker 2: the best. So you hooped in but you didn't play
- 24:29Speaker 2: in high school? So what did you do in high school?
- 24:32Speaker 1: Then football, baseball, football.
- 24:33Speaker 2: My mom was telling My mom was like, you're you're
- 24:35Speaker 2: not smart enough to do three sports?
- 24:37Speaker 1: Grades again, did she she forgot? She was you.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I didn't get that side of it, you know. So
- 24:46Speaker 2: fortunately I went to a you know, public high school
- 24:49Speaker 2: where my sister was the ASP president. My brother was
- 24:53Speaker 2: a good student before me, and so the teachers knew,
- 24:56Speaker 2: you know, they they were familiar with me, and they
- 24:59Speaker 2: gave me a leeway and in high school with the grades.
- 25:02Speaker 1: So did you get recruited for football? Yeah? Oh, to
- 25:06Speaker 1: what position did you play?
- 25:07Speaker 2: I played quarterback in high school, and you know I
- 25:12Speaker 2: was recruited. I knew I wanted to go to a
- 25:15Speaker 2: warm weather school. Funny story, Duke flew out one time
- 25:20Speaker 2: and I didn't know they were gonna come. In fourth period,
- 25:23Speaker 2: you know, our athletic director pulls me out and he's like, hey,
- 25:26Speaker 2: Duke's out here. You know, they want to see you throw.
- 25:28Speaker 2: So I'm like, all right, let's do it.
- 25:29Speaker 1: They just want to see you throw.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and you know they shake your hand, you know,
- 25:35Speaker 2: check your height, whatever weight, and then I was like,
- 25:38Speaker 2: all right, let's do it.
- 25:39Speaker 1: So we go out on the football field.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Starting receivers taking like the sat number two blew out
- 25:45Speaker 2: his arm. Number three didn't show up for class number four,
- 25:51Speaker 2: receiver number four last rated kidney. So me and my
- 25:55Speaker 2: coach are like, all right, what like, what are we
- 25:58Speaker 2: gonna do here?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Right?
- 25:59Speaker 2: And it's fourth period, so we go on the football field.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Does that mean people are in class? Yeah? People in class?
- 26:06Speaker 2: And you know you're feeling the man getting pulled out
- 26:08Speaker 2: of class. Go throw for a football coach and then
- 26:10Speaker 2: you go but you're like, all right, so none of
- 26:13Speaker 2: our receivers are here, peas out. So we start having
- 26:18Speaker 2: kids from fourth period pe who aren't playing sports wow,
- 26:22Speaker 2: running routes and it's like the most embarrassing thing that's
- 26:25Speaker 2: going on. And I'm like trying to throw to these kids,
- 26:28Speaker 2: but it's.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Like, you know they couldn't catch it.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you're like, I mean you're throwing a high schoolers
- 26:34Speaker 2: that aren't playing school.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Okay, So that's even So after.
- 26:37Speaker 2: That we go into the office and Coach Lee's and
- 26:40Speaker 2: he's like, probably gonna be Duke.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, you're probably right, man, You're probably right.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Maybe that was some right on the wall. Then you
- 26:50Speaker 2: know baseball was the future. But yeah, that was like,
- 26:52Speaker 2: that's a funny story that I look back on now.
- 26:54Speaker 1: So wait, okay, related to that story, how is your
- 26:58Speaker 1: whole starting, your whole receiving court gone?
- 27:03Speaker 2: So our our number one is he went to Harvard,
- 27:07Speaker 2: so he's smart dude. So he was taking like the
- 27:09Speaker 2: Sat SAT two S number two receiver. He had like
- 27:12Speaker 2: blown out his arm. I don't know what happened, but
- 27:15Speaker 2: he had like a bruise from like his shoulder to
- 27:16Speaker 2: his elbow. Couldn't move it. Our number three, like I said,
- 27:21Speaker 2: I messed it up. But number three had a last
- 27:22Speaker 2: rated kidney, so he blew out his kidney. And then, uh,
- 27:26Speaker 2: our number four was you know, high.
- 27:28Speaker 1: School like he was so so okay, football season wasn't
- 27:36Speaker 1: going on at the football season was.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Not going on, but yeah had so it was like
- 27:39Speaker 2: after my junior year going into senior like junior baseball season.
- 27:44Speaker 1: You know, like you know, and so baseball, how were
- 27:47Speaker 1: you Was you called in baseball in high school? Yeah?
- 27:49Speaker 2: I mean I was, Yeah, I was pretty good, you know,
- 27:53Speaker 2: I mean yeah, I mean every you know, everybody's pretty
- 27:55Speaker 2: good in high school.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Yeah, some people was the man in high school. My
- 27:59Speaker 1: high school'sta I mean relative to all the big league people,
- 28:02Speaker 1: it's probably like kind of average.
- 28:04Speaker 2: You know, I would say the same, Okay, yeah, you
- 28:06Speaker 2: know you're hitting up you know, four hundred high four hundreds,
- 28:09Speaker 2: yeah right exactly.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you know you hit some homers and yeah, okay.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So then you're going tell me about the draft process, like,
- 28:15Speaker 1: how was that? Yeah? It was, it was. It was
- 28:21Speaker 1: a process.
- 28:22Speaker 2: So going into my junior year, I had to get
- 28:23Speaker 2: sophomore year and uh, you know, so people are telling me,
- 28:28Speaker 2: you know, you can go as high as a third
- 28:30Speaker 2: round or whatever. I was like, great, that's awesome. Go
- 28:32Speaker 2: out terrible junior year, I mean, bad, bad junior year,
- 28:37Speaker 2: and you know, I we're waiting and I asked my age,
- 28:41Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, what do you think we can go?
- 28:44Speaker 2: He goes anywhere from four to fourteen.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Fourth round to fourteen. Yeah. So I'm like, all right,
- 28:50Speaker 1: so did you go to did you go to college? Yeah?
- 28:52Speaker 2: I went to usc us C Yeah, so I stayed home,
- 28:54Speaker 2: stayed local, and uh so I'm like, four to fourteen
- 28:58Speaker 2: are that's kind of a big Yeah.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Where we get to that. Let's go back. So you
- 29:01Speaker 1: got in high school, you were getting what who else
- 29:04Speaker 1: did you get?
- 29:04Speaker 2: Recruited by baseball, yeah, sc UCLA, Irvine, Fullerton, Washington a
- 29:11Speaker 2: little bit. And then when I started, I got recruited
- 29:15Speaker 2: a little bit by Rich Rodriguez for football Arizona. So
- 29:18Speaker 2: then Andy Lopez at the time was like kind of and.
- 29:20Speaker 1: That didn't you didn't even think about like, man, I
- 29:23Speaker 1: may want to go play football. I did.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I did, but I knew, see, like I wanted to
- 29:29Speaker 2: go to a school that like was like, you know,
- 29:30Speaker 2: good academics, and you know, thinking I was gonna be yeah, yeah, right,
- 29:34Speaker 2: like thinking like, you know, I'm not a great student now,
- 29:36Speaker 2: but once I get to college, surely, you know, college
- 29:38Speaker 2: environment's gonna help me get greg grade in school.
- 29:41Speaker 1: You know, I'm like, come on, bro.
- 29:43Speaker 2: So then I was like, you know, Arizona's kind of
- 29:45Speaker 2: you know, not that you know, no, no disrespect to
- 29:48Speaker 2: Arizona or anything, but and so like Duke, I was
- 29:51Speaker 2: all excited about Duke. Thinking back on it, there's no
- 29:54Speaker 2: way I would have passed. But but yeah, you know,
- 29:57Speaker 2: so I wanted to play football, but it just it
- 29:59Speaker 2: wasn't in the cards.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Yeah, So then you bang that Yeah, so you know
- 30:03Speaker 1: the u C A, U S U s C, U
- 30:05Speaker 1: C l A rivalry because I have a lot, you know,
- 30:08Speaker 1: being out in l A, there's so many people, you're
- 30:10Speaker 1: one of the other. So what made you go s
- 30:12Speaker 1: C instead of U C l A.
- 30:16Speaker 2: My brother went, he was he played at s C.
- 30:18Speaker 2: So he's five years older than me, so he he
- 30:22Speaker 2: played at sc. SC gave me a scholarship, and then
- 30:26Speaker 2: you know, I was like, you know, I kind of
- 30:31Speaker 2: want to go to you know, a school no disrespect.
- 30:33Speaker 2: At the time, stually wasn't winning, so I was like,
- 30:35Speaker 2: you know, maybe go to U C l A. But
- 30:38Speaker 2: I always wanted to follow my brother's footsteps. You know,
- 30:40Speaker 2: he's good big brother than me. So I was like,
- 30:43Speaker 2: you know, I think that's that's a place for me.
- 30:45Speaker 2: I was comfortable there. I grew up a fan of
- 30:47Speaker 2: Reggie Bush, Matt Lioner, Like, you know, I was like,
- 30:49Speaker 2: those those dudes were a man. So being able to
- 30:51Speaker 2: go to the same school that they went to, even
- 30:53Speaker 2: though it's not the same sport, I was like, you know,
- 30:55Speaker 2: I kind of wanted.
- 30:55Speaker 1: That's why I chose. I chose to go to Tennessee
- 30:58Speaker 1: over Vandy. First of all, Tony Kempell's there, and so
- 31:00Speaker 1: I knew I wasn't gonna play that much. And then
- 31:02Speaker 1: second Tennessee was not good. So I knew I'm playing
- 31:06Speaker 1: as soon as I stupid, I'm playing. I'm not going
- 31:08Speaker 1: anywhere to sit. I'm playing. So I definitely, I definitely
- 31:12Speaker 1: understand it. So you say your junior year, you're going,
- 31:14Speaker 1: you're playing, You're bawling balled in your junior year wasn't
- 31:17Speaker 1: that good, so you thought you fail. You went from
- 31:21Speaker 1: would you say say, they said anywhere from four to
- 31:22Speaker 1: fourth fourteen. Yeah, And so draft day comes.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Draft day comes, and there's a few teams that are like, hey,
- 31:33Speaker 2: we'll take you, but you know, wagh in their slot.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And I was like, yeah, you know, it's all good.
- 31:37Speaker 2: And then you know, fifth round go, sixth round, go,
- 31:40Speaker 2: seventh front goes, and me and my family are sitting
- 31:43Speaker 2: there and I'm just like no, like this is a disaster. Like,
- 31:47Speaker 2: you know, my grades weren't straight my junior year either,
- 31:50Speaker 2: because I'm hitting, I'm in the cage all the time,
- 31:52Speaker 2: hitting just and I'm like, if I go back to campus,
- 31:55Speaker 2: it's gonna be a nightmare with the actor that like
- 31:57Speaker 2: I'm gonna be in study hall every day, Like this
- 31:59Speaker 2: is gonna be a miserable and then thankfully, uh, the
- 32:03Speaker 2: Cardinals call and they you know, they actually Randy Floores,
- 32:07Speaker 2: who's our scouting director or was, calls my brother because
- 32:11Speaker 2: he was his pitching coach at sc for a year.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Then he had my number, and my brother's like, damn,
- 32:15Speaker 2: am I getting drafted again. He answer the phone and
- 32:18Speaker 2: then you know, he's like, hey, can you put your
- 32:21Speaker 2: brother on the phone, hands me the phone, and he's like, hey,
- 32:24Speaker 2: we're gonna, you know, take you in the eighth round,
- 32:25Speaker 2: a little under slot. But at that point I was like,
- 32:28Speaker 2: I've been beating up too much. I was like, just
- 32:30Speaker 2: take me and so, yeah, eighth round, two hundred and
- 32:34Speaker 2: forty third pick or something like that.
- 32:36Speaker 1: So and then how was your mind league experience?
- 32:39Speaker 2: It was cool man short season, you know that it
- 32:43Speaker 2: was that same year as a draft played terribly, and
- 32:46Speaker 2: the short season you played in short season played terribly.
- 32:48Speaker 2: So that whole twenty eighteen year, I was just in
- 32:50Speaker 2: my own head playing bad going to that offseason, and
- 32:54Speaker 2: my brother had just gotten released, you know, and so
- 32:56Speaker 2: he was kind of talking me through like some of
- 32:58Speaker 2: the things that he went through and like what he
- 33:01Speaker 2: would have done differently, and all these things, and also
- 33:05Speaker 2: was just telling me how blessed I am to be
- 33:07Speaker 2: able to be playing baseball, you know. And so went
- 33:10Speaker 2: into that off season and was like, you know, I'm
- 33:12Speaker 2: gonna put my head down and just grind and you know,
- 33:14Speaker 2: not do nothing crazy, just handle business. Basically, went in
- 33:19Speaker 2: the camp, felt really good. And then you know the
- 33:24Speaker 2: minor leagues. Of the minor leagues, bro, you're in pure Illinois, freezing,
- 33:27Speaker 2: getting snowed out in April, like I feel that grinding.
- 33:32Speaker 2: And then you know, living in a garage in Palm
- 33:35Speaker 2: Beach and High A and yeah, actually it was you
- 33:39Speaker 2: know our manager at the now our manager, he he
- 33:41Speaker 2: had a place down there, and so he would always
- 33:42Speaker 2: run to the guys in High A.
- 33:43Speaker 1: And but.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Listen, I got promoted. I didn't have anywhere to sleep.
- 33:49Speaker 2: It's either I'm paying for the double tree, which you
- 33:51Speaker 2: can't afford.
- 33:52Speaker 1: No, we can't do that. So they were like, hey,
- 33:55Speaker 1: we got a garage for you. So I was like,
- 33:56Speaker 1: all right, perfect. Didn't have air conditioning, no, but it
- 33:59Speaker 1: had a bad So I was like, all right, that's perfect.
- 34:01Speaker 1: You know, didn't have air condition no, no, no TV
- 34:04Speaker 1: or nothing no TV. Wow, Yeah, nothing like that and
- 34:08Speaker 1: so that's what it was.
- 34:10Speaker 2: And then when I got called up the double A,
- 34:13Speaker 2: I didn't have a place to stay either, so me
- 34:15Speaker 2: and my buddy were sharing a hotel cheap hotels like
- 34:17Speaker 2: around in the area, just trying to, you know, make
- 34:20Speaker 2: way until we found something.
- 34:22Speaker 1: So how you that they don't they don't like give
- 34:25Speaker 1: y'all thousand they don't like I think now they do.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I think I just know. It was like, hey, we're
- 34:31Speaker 1: calling calling you up.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I think you get like two two to three nights.
- 34:35Speaker 2: I can't imagine it's any longer than two to three nights.
- 34:37Speaker 2: I can't remember exactly what it was, but it's like
- 34:39Speaker 2: figure it out. And I didn't know none of these guys,
- 34:42Speaker 2: and so I was like, I don't want to be again.
- 34:44Speaker 2: I don't want to be the guy like, you know, hey,
- 34:47Speaker 2: can I crash with you? Can I crash with you?
- 34:49Speaker 2: I want to build a relationship with so many before
- 34:50Speaker 2: I'm asking them like, hey, you know, can I organic?
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah? Right? And then uh ended up happening.
- 34:56Speaker 2: But you know, looking back on it, like the minor
- 34:59Speaker 2: league life, it's it's it's like fun, you know, like
- 35:04Speaker 2: it's funny to think to think about.
- 35:06Speaker 1: But because all you know is just grind, grind, grind,
- 35:09Speaker 1: like everything.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Long bus ride, sixteen hours, like you know, you're you're
- 35:14Speaker 2: laying on the floor of the bus because it's warm
- 35:16Speaker 2: because of the engine. You know, like you're like like
- 35:19Speaker 2: I remember getting that for the first time, and I
- 35:21Speaker 2: was like, I gotta start sitting in the back of
- 35:24Speaker 2: the bus because the enginees back there and it's a
- 35:25Speaker 2: little bit warmer, and I don't have a blanket.
- 35:27Speaker 1: So it's like, you know, like I could get a
- 35:28Speaker 1: couple hours of sleep on this thing.
- 35:30Speaker 2: And so yeah, man, I mean it builds character for sure.
- 35:34Speaker 1: So then you come up to the big leagues. And
- 35:37Speaker 1: like you said, you were early for you was when
- 35:42Speaker 1: pool host is around, Wayano was around, Goldie was around
- 35:48Speaker 1: Goldy yeah, yady, yady yeah yeah yeah, y was that?
- 35:53Speaker 1: How was that with all these you know, arguably Hall
- 35:56Speaker 1: of Fame guys. Yeah, you know, how was that crazy?
- 36:02Speaker 2: My first year we had all those guys minus Albert,
- 36:07Speaker 2: but we traded for you know, John Lester and Karp
- 36:11Speaker 2: was there too, and like that was for me and
- 36:17Speaker 2: I was like the only rookie on the team. So
- 36:19Speaker 2: on the flights, yeah, so on the flights, you know,
- 36:22Speaker 2: I'm getting everybody drinks, like at the poker table, and.
- 36:27Speaker 1: I was just standing there.
- 36:27Speaker 2: But I was having so much fun, just like standing
- 36:30Speaker 2: and watching these guys and like I'm like, like somebody
- 36:33Speaker 2: pinched me. Moments like it is John Lesser right here,
- 36:36Speaker 2: you know, like I can't believe, like Goldie's talking to
- 36:38Speaker 2: me here, yacht, he's.
- 36:38Speaker 1: You know, knows my name and so.
- 36:41Speaker 2: But you know, anytime Lester had a beer and you know,
- 36:43Speaker 2: he's drinking on the bus. Once it got past ninety degrees,
- 36:46Speaker 2: I knew to get up.
- 36:47Speaker 1: Go go get him away. He didn't have to ask,
- 36:49Speaker 1: like once he got past ninety. But you know, it
- 36:51Speaker 1: was cool.
- 36:52Speaker 2: And then when Albert came the next year, obviously he
- 36:53Speaker 2: went on that historic run with seven hundred.
- 36:57Speaker 1: It was just crazy.
- 36:58Speaker 2: I remember I texted my dad once I was at
- 37:01Speaker 2: dinner with some of them. I think it's my rookie year.
- 37:04Speaker 2: I went to the bathroom and I was like, Dad,
- 37:07Speaker 2: I'm at dinner with this this, this this right now,
- 37:10Speaker 2: like because I grew up such a fan, and you know,
- 37:13Speaker 2: he's like that's pretty awesome, man, Like, you know, didn't
- 37:15Speaker 2: give me some much short, but it was like so
- 37:16Speaker 2: many moments like that where I was like, it's crazy cool.
- 37:20Speaker 2: But but it's what's nice about it too, is like
- 37:22Speaker 2: it it makes you be a rookie. Yeah you know
- 37:25Speaker 2: you you know, you walk in You're like, I know
- 37:27Speaker 2: my place in this clubhouse.
- 37:29Speaker 1: I know, man, I did. So did you have to
- 37:31Speaker 1: like carry all the bags and yeah, yeah yeah, poker chips,
- 37:34Speaker 1: you know, Speaker and you were the only guys, so
- 37:37Speaker 1: you do it all by yourself.
- 37:38Speaker 2: Yeah, so my rookie year and shout out Yachty man,
- 37:42Speaker 2: he's the best. But I sat in the media for
- 37:45Speaker 2: my first five flights in the back of the plane
- 37:48Speaker 2: because Yachty Speaker had a seat and so I was
- 37:54Speaker 2: so then you know, all the seats were taken, so
- 37:56Speaker 2: I go sit.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I to sit in the U in the with the
- 37:59Speaker 1: media in the back. You know. When it opened up,
- 38:01Speaker 1: I was like, no way, Like this is crazy.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I get to say with the players, but yeah, so
- 38:06Speaker 2: uh but it like and y'all didn't even do it
- 38:09Speaker 2: because like he was trying to punk me. It was
- 38:11Speaker 2: just like that was his thing, Like he's Yanniya Malina,
- 38:13Speaker 2: He's been doing that for years, and so I didn't
- 38:15Speaker 2: say nothing.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I was like yeah, I all have my snickers in
- 38:17Speaker 1: the back and just chill. There's no way you can
- 38:19Speaker 1: kick and see that, I mean, speaker at them exactly so.
- 38:23Speaker 1: And then you guys are going. You're playing, and uh,
- 38:28Speaker 1: I know, it gets kind of tough sometimes, especially when
- 38:32Speaker 1: you may not be playing well. The organization things may
- 38:35Speaker 1: not be going great. But now you guys are. It
- 38:39Speaker 1: seems like y'all are starting to jail in a way
- 38:42Speaker 1: that is like because I've been I've been on teams
- 38:45Speaker 1: where it's like you feel like the underdog, but the
- 38:48Speaker 1: relationship and the bond that you create with the guys
- 38:51Speaker 1: actually makes you start playing a lot better. And it's
- 38:54Speaker 1: that's kind of what it seems like you guys got
- 38:56Speaker 1: going now. Yeah, it is.
- 38:58Speaker 2: And you know, at twenty one we lost to you
- 39:02Speaker 2: guys in the wild Card Game. Twenty two, twenty one
- 39:05Speaker 2: we did that, twenty two we lost the Phillies in
- 39:07Speaker 2: the wild Cuts series. And then after that, you know,
- 39:10Speaker 2: last year, two years ago, we kind of scuffled a
- 39:12Speaker 2: little bit trying to like, you know, put some pieces
- 39:15Speaker 2: together and and do some things where obviously we thought
- 39:19Speaker 2: was best for us, but you know, maybe maybe it was.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Maybe it wasn't, but now you know, we kind of
- 39:24Speaker 2: committed to all right, this is a team. You know,
- 39:27Speaker 2: we got a lot of young guys on here. You know,
- 39:30Speaker 2: we're gonna roll, you know, roll these guys out and
- 39:32Speaker 2: see what happens. And I think with a lot of
- 39:35Speaker 2: us having those bumps and bruises for the past two
- 39:37Speaker 2: three years, you know, and some of the guys have
- 39:41Speaker 2: played with each other since they got drafted in the
- 39:43Speaker 2: minor leagues, like you kind of feel that that team chemistry,
- 39:46Speaker 2: that team camaraderie a little bit more, and guys can
- 39:49Speaker 2: kind of be themselves and not have to walk on
- 39:53Speaker 2: glass and stuff like that and not know their role.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I think guys kind of understand and they take ownership
- 39:57Speaker 2: in that and so you know, that part of it
- 40:00Speaker 2: I think has kind of helped us come into our
- 40:02Speaker 2: own And you know, last month we had a really
- 40:03Speaker 2: good month. And it's just a month, but I think
- 40:06Speaker 2: for for our team coming into this season, like it's
- 40:08Speaker 2: big for us to prove that, you know, we can compete.
- 40:12Speaker 1: We're playing well, yeah, and it's good to have some
- 40:14Speaker 1: success to know you can do it as well. Exactly right,
- 40:17Speaker 1: all right, So in the spirit of Lars Newt bar.
- 40:21Speaker 1: You didn't have a nickname, but I mean, what is
- 40:22Speaker 1: your nickname? Because people didn't call you nut growing up? No,
- 40:25Speaker 1: they didn't. What was your nickname? Or you just had
- 40:27Speaker 1: your name was Lars Lars? Yeah all right. Did you
- 40:30Speaker 1: think you were getting booed when you did first time? Yeah, Bush,
- 40:35Speaker 1: I was like, damn they booming me, prospect, but this
- 40:40Speaker 1: is rough. No, it's new though, it's new, so now
- 40:45Speaker 1: you enjoy it? Yeah, I love enjoy it. Yeah yeah, yeah, alright, bro,
- 40:48Speaker 1: we're gonna switch gears. We're gonna play a game called
- 40:51Speaker 1: Newt or not Newt meaning it is a real name,
- 40:54Speaker 1: not obviously it's not a real name. Okay. First name
- 40:59Speaker 1: is Fozzie Whittaker.
- 41:01Speaker 2: It's either a real name or not a real name.
- 41:04Speaker 1: This is the real name. It's a real name, real
- 41:08Speaker 1: name on their I D all right, all right, so
- 41:11Speaker 1: that's a new Yeah, you're going in.
- 41:13Speaker 2: I'm going okay, yeah, that is that is okay, all right,
- 41:16Speaker 2: all right, all right, I'm getting.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Okay, okay, I don't even know how to say. So
- 41:26Speaker 1: what about Billy bill Avin Bill bill Avian Bill Avan,
- 41:32Speaker 1: Billy belaving.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Billy believing I'm gonna go with new No, it's not not.
- 41:40Speaker 1: Where so where worried? So did you just make that up? Yeah?
- 41:43Speaker 1: That one? Yet? What about this one kool Aid McKinstry, McKinstry,
- 41:50Speaker 1: that is that is new You know who that is?
- 41:53Speaker 1: That's TV right, Yeah, so that must have been your boy.
- 41:56Speaker 2: So no, it wasn't my boy, but I remember like
- 41:58Speaker 2: him coming up in the recruiting thing like it was
- 42:01Speaker 2: all over everything, like can you believe this dude's name
- 42:03Speaker 2: is koul Ad McKinstry.
- 42:04Speaker 1: And so, okay, so you know what that is? Oh
- 42:08Speaker 1: he went Tom, I think so something like that. Yeah. Yeah,
- 42:11Speaker 1: what about Gordon Bombay? Gordon Bombay. Yeah, I'm gonna go not. No,
- 42:22Speaker 1: it's not it's not a right, it's not good for you. Okay,
- 42:26Speaker 1: I got a couple more old Hoss Radbourne. I'm gonna
- 42:34Speaker 1: go Newt. That's real. I don't like how you what?
- 42:39Speaker 2: What? What?
- 42:39Speaker 1: What? Who was old the old Hoss? He was an
- 42:42Speaker 1: MLB pitcher in the eighteen hundreds. All right, that was
- 42:45Speaker 1: a long time ago. It was a long time ago. Okay,
- 42:48Speaker 1: imagine hitting those pictures. Okay, what about Razor Shines, I'm
- 42:54Speaker 1: gonna go with not it is it is former Mets
- 42:58Speaker 1: first basement. Yep, and uh, I got one more general booty.
- 43:04Speaker 2: General booty another college recruit. I'm gonna say, nude, you
- 43:07Speaker 2: know who that is?
- 43:08Speaker 1: Yeah? Okay, yeah, he's a college football QB. So do
- 43:11Speaker 1: you know you're college? My high school?
- 43:14Speaker 2: See, I probably know too much about high school recruit
- 43:15Speaker 2: And and you said you were smart, Doug. Yeah, I
- 43:18Speaker 2: mean there's certain things that fill up his brain.
- 43:20Speaker 1: But that's about it. Okay. I got a couple of
- 43:23Speaker 1: fan questions before I let you go, bro Lar. Okay,
- 43:28Speaker 1: they said, since you get the you got to catch
- 43:30Speaker 1: the end of the finals game the ok See and Pacers.
- 43:35Speaker 1: What's the craziest sport moment? Uh, we've gotten back to
- 43:40Speaker 1: the cliphouse to see so after a game, I don't.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Know, you know what's crazy. I don't know if this
- 43:48Speaker 2: is the craziest one. But the Blues we're playing in
- 43:54Speaker 2: the playoffs, and I can't even remember who they're playing.
- 43:57Speaker 2: We're up three to one. Whoever they're playing pulls their
- 44:01Speaker 2: pulls their goalie and scores three to two. But put
- 44:06Speaker 2: the goalie back, but we're still up three two.
- 44:08Speaker 1: Actual said. The Blues are up three to two with three.
- 44:13Speaker 2: Seconds left, tie it up, Ot, don't nobody scores double
- 44:17Speaker 2: Ot blues loose and you got to work it. We're
- 44:20Speaker 2: sitting in the Cole tompsonting in the tubs watching this game.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Everybody's going nuts, like trainers are going crazy. Yeah that
- 44:26Speaker 2: was a that was a heartbreaking one for the city. Yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know, I don't know any I mean,
- 44:32Speaker 1: I've seen so many coming back into the clubhouse that
- 44:35Speaker 1: I can't even really not one light pops in it
- 44:38Speaker 1: because I've seen so many game winning shots. And usually
- 44:41Speaker 1: for us, a lot of the times it's basketball just
- 44:43Speaker 1: because of the season, you know, the season, and then
- 44:46Speaker 1: we'll see some football, but it's like early regular season football.
- 44:50Speaker 1: It's not really crazy moments, you know. Okay, so, uh,
- 44:56Speaker 1: what's your favorite Japanese millior mom mikes? Hmmm, So, like
- 45:03Speaker 1: would your mom cook for show Hey and Yoshi and
- 45:06Speaker 1: these guys while they're here, would she? Yeah?
- 45:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think I'm gonna go get I'm
- 45:14Speaker 2: gonna go get dinner with with Yoshi tomorrow and the
- 45:17Speaker 2: Japanese spot, I guess is closed that they're trying to do.
- 45:20Speaker 2: But yeah, so like my mom's out here right now
- 45:22Speaker 2: and they talk. My mom was like dogs hitting for
- 45:26Speaker 2: Carlos last season when you guys were on the road.
- 45:28Speaker 1: Oh wow, okay, okay, but uh so your mom's a
- 45:31Speaker 1: grinder too, bro.
- 45:33Speaker 2: For a baseball player should do anything a Japanese baseball player.
- 45:38Speaker 1: For Yoshi, I sure to put it in order because
- 45:41Speaker 1: I want to get me. I want to eat it too.
- 45:44Speaker 2: My favorite meal that my mom makes is probably here
- 45:47Speaker 2: gioza the what what's what's that?
- 45:51Speaker 1: And I have no idea?
- 45:52Speaker 2: Come on, you know what dumplings? Is it dumplings?
- 45:54Speaker 1: Oh? Yeah, it is dumplings. Is that that's right? Yeah,
- 45:57Speaker 1: it is that my mom makes.
- 46:00Speaker 2: Yeah, that's like growing up, I would crush those. So
- 46:05Speaker 2: anytime we had those, yeah, I was. I was killing them.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Nice okay, okay, so h m hmm. This is a
- 46:14Speaker 1: conflicting question, all right, but I'm asking anyway. So I
- 46:19Speaker 1: just had Pete on on on the podcast and he
- 46:25Speaker 1: went crazy. He uh, I just brought up the word
- 46:29Speaker 1: home run and he hit three or four everywhere, and so,
- 46:37Speaker 1: uh they said, how many how many willars hit this series?
- 46:43Speaker 1: This series? Yeah? Yeah, that was just for the series
- 46:47Speaker 1: with Pete. So Pete hit three I think this series three,
- 46:53Speaker 1: three and he got a lot of hits. So well,
- 46:56Speaker 1: I'm glad I'm here.
- 46:58Speaker 2: I'm at least putting my best foot four rookies even
- 47:01Speaker 2: doing everything he can and give me his.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Mm hmm. A big park. Our park is not hitter friendly.
- 47:10Speaker 1: It's not. It's not. But you you're a pretty big dude.
- 47:16Speaker 1: You got juice to hint it kind of anywhere you
- 47:19Speaker 1: want to. I'm gonna go with how many games we play,
- 47:27Speaker 1: y'all three? Three, I'm gonna go one homer. Listen, one
- 47:33Speaker 1: homer three games. If I get one homer, Mookie, I'm
- 47:37Speaker 1: not I'm not. I'm not a greedy guy. I'm not
- 47:40Speaker 1: like you. I'm not like you, bro Like. I don't
- 47:45Speaker 1: need it.
- 47:46Speaker 2: I don't need a hit three for three homer. You
- 47:48Speaker 2: know I don't need one sixty two homers in a season.
- 47:50Speaker 2: If I'm hit one homer, I'm cool, man.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So I'm gonna give you one homer
- 47:55Speaker 1: and and and and for the series, I'm gonna predict
- 47:59Speaker 1: like like three games. I'm gonna predict five hits in
- 48:03Speaker 1: three games, one of them being a homer. Love it
- 48:07Speaker 1: made three wins for the Cardinals too. Maybe that's a
- 48:09Speaker 1: lot that's a lot we'll see. But but anyways, Bro,
