- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:04daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:11Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:14I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:18media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:22everyone. OK, I think our new setup, we're
- 0:25actually going to have Annabelle sitting in the office while I
- 0:28record every single day. This is the first time we're
- 0:31testing it out, so hopefully it doesn't mess me up too much and
- 0:33make me feel embarrassed when I do mess up.
- 0:36She does have her Airpods in right now, so we'll see how this
- 0:38goes, but it's a very exciting development that our office is
- 0:42big enough to facilitate that. Because our last office was so
- 0:45small, we had to move all of the desks whenever we recorded and
- 0:48like vice versa, like move the recording stuff when we wanted
- 0:51to sit at our desks and we could have never done this.
- 0:53So we are moving on up. OK, before I get into the
- 0:56stories for today, Please remember to rate, review and
- 0:59subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 1:01We're trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings by the end
- 1:04of the year. And we're like pretty close.
- 1:06I think we're 250 off and there are way more than 250 of you
- 1:11that listen to this podcast. So please, I think you need to
- 1:13listen to like 3 minutes, maybe not even maybe 30 seconds.
- 1:16I don't know. It's a pretty short amount of
- 1:18time of an episode on Spotify to be able to rate it.
- 1:20So please go do that. All right, let's just get into
- 1:23the stories for today. OK, so the first story that I
- 1:26have for you guys is that Jara Jai has been named executive
- 1:30vice president of Skims Beauty and Fragrance, just three months
- 1:34after announcing the closing of her beauty brand on Amy Cole.
- 1:38I know that this is maybe more beauty industry related than we
- 1:42typically report on, but this is more of a story for me than
- 1:46anything. And I do think a bunch of you
- 1:47guys probably followed this to an extent because it combines
- 1:51beauty, female founder life, pop culture.
- 1:54I think it's relevant. It's a little bit out of our
- 1:56normal scope, but I was super interested in it and I think you
- 2:00guys will be too. So Jara was the founder of Amy
- 2:03Cole, an inclusive beauty brand that she launched just four
- 2:07years ago. The brand was so beloved,
- 2:10especially amongst women of color, and it was a huge shock
- 2:13when she announced back in July that it was closing because they
- 2:17seemed to be going strength to strength.
- 2:20They were super buzzy. They had cult products that
- 2:23people loved. They were in more than 600
- 2:25Sephora stores. Like they were really, really
- 2:28successful by every traditional metric.
- 2:31Since announcing its closure, Jara has done quite an amazing
- 2:33press run where she's been really honest and transparent
- 2:37about the brand's quote UN quote failure, which I think has
- 2:40really expanded her reach personally and helped her
- 2:42develop almost like her own fandom of female founders who
- 2:47are just loving this era for her of transparency, bravery,
- 2:51honesty, just talking about what really happened behind the
- 2:54scenes of a brand. Like you don't see that so
- 2:56often. I personally am in this camp of
- 2:58being a fan girl of her now. I have read literally every
- 3:01op-ed she's written. I've listened to every podcast
- 3:03she's been on talking about like this.
- 3:05I'm obsessed with how she has handled closing her business.
- 3:09The main reason that she cited for the brand's closure was
- 3:12unsustainable operating costs. She said on Emma Greed's podcast
- 3:16that she would go into like 20 Sephora stores if she was going
- 3:20to start this again, do this again instead of 600.
- 3:22But she just didn't know what she didn't know at the time.
- 3:25And now it seems like all of this transparency and honesty
- 3:29has really paid off because today it was announced that she
- 3:31has been appointed as head of beauty and fragrance of skin
- 3:35Beauty. So this is from Allure Quote.
- 3:37According to the press release, she'll lead product development,
- 3:40innovation and brand strategy for its upcoming spinoff brand,
- 3:43Skims Beauty Quote. There are so many beauty lines
- 3:46out there and consumers are more discerning than ever.
- 3:49They want quality, they want delight, they want something
- 3:52that makes their lives easier. She said.
- 3:55I can't wait to collaborate with the SKIMS team on items we hope
- 3:58will become essential in their regime.
- 3:59So before launching her own brand, Zara had quite the
- 4:02impressive resume. She worked in marketing roles at
- 4:05Glossier L'Oreal Rebecca Minkoff, so she is well equipped
- 4:09for this now. In case you didn't know that
- 4:11Skims Beauty was happening, I don't even think I reported on
- 4:14this. But in mid-october, Kim
- 4:15announced that Skims Beauty was coming and they had closed KKW
- 4:20Beauty. She has then said that the
- 4:21beloved KKW Beauty products will be coming back soon.
- 4:25So I assume that she will be relaunching those under Skims
- 4:27Beauty. Like the lip liner, the contour
- 4:29stick, that kind of stuff. OK, the next way that I have for
- 4:31you guys is some more industry news.
- 4:34Conde Nast has folded Teen Vogue into vogue.com while doing mass
- 4:40layoffs, particularly from their politics vertical.
- 4:44So it was announced today that Teen Vogue did mass layoffs as
- 4:47the title prepares to be rolled into vogue.com.
- 4:50Amid this change, Teen Vogue axed almost all of their
- 4:53political writers, which is truly insane because if you know
- 4:57Teen Vogue, then you know that politics is one of the major
- 5:00beats that they cover. They do really amazing political
- 5:03coverage and it's what's helped keep them relevant amongst other
- 5:07things. Like they do really amazing
- 5:08celebrity profiles, for example, But their politics coverage is
- 5:12so good. That's helped keep them relevant
- 5:15in this era of, you know, like dying kind of legacy outlets.
- 5:19Even more disappointing, Conde Nast laid off almost all of Teen
- 5:24Vogue's black writers. So this is a blue sky post from
- 5:28former politics writer at Teen Vogue.
- 5:30Lex Mcmenamin quote. Now that this is public, I can
- 5:33confirm that the majority of today's layoffs were women of
- 5:36color. There are no longer any black
- 5:39women working at Teen Vogue. Lex also confirmed that there
- 5:42are no longer any trans staff members left at Teen Vogue
- 5:46following the layoffs. In addition to these layoffs,
- 5:49Teen Vogue's editor in chief will be leaving, and the
- 5:51publication will be overseen by our controversial fashion girly
- 5:57Chloe Mal. OK, So obviously, these layoffs
- 5:59are so disappointing. I mean, layoffs are just par for
- 6:02the course of. I mean, I feel like every
- 6:04industry right now, but you know, media, especially these
- 6:07past, let's say five years, but these particular layoffs laying
- 6:11off basically all of the people of color, all of the trans
- 6:14staff, like just leaving what like hetero white people like
- 6:18this is going to have serious consequences for the outlets
- 6:22reporting. So this is from The Hollywood
- 6:24Reporter, quote. The Newsroom union claims the
- 6:27change is throttling staff diversity and muting the
- 6:30magazine's progressive political bent.
- 6:32The union told The Hollywood Reporter Quote management plans
- 6:35to lay off six of our members, most of whom are by POC, women
- 6:39or trans, including Teen Vogues politics editor.
- 6:43Continuing the trend of layoffs at Conde disproportionately
- 6:46impacting marginalized employees, Teen Vogue now has no
- 6:50writers or editors explicitly covering politics.
- 6:54As of today, only one woman of color remains on the editorial
- 6:58staff at Teen Vogue. I fear this is going to be the
- 7:02end of Teen Vogue relevancy, which is so sad.
- 7:05But I don't know how you could cover politics, culture, even
- 7:09fashion, you know, without an intersectional lens.
- 7:12And obviously, as per the union, this has become a trend at Conde
- 7:16Nast, which I guess should not be that surprising to us knowing
- 7:19who's at the top of that organization.
- 7:21But yeah, it's very disappointing.
- 7:23And I'm really feeling for all of the staff amid the layoffs.
- 7:26As a media girlie myself, I understand how that feels.
- 7:30You know, I had some friends when we were in our early 20s,
- 7:32like 2324 who had already been through two or three layoffs at
- 7:36that age. Like that should not be
- 7:38normalized. It's so horrible.
- 7:40All right. And the last right that I have
- 7:42for you guys is that Xandra Poll.
- 7:44This is like a, a very different, like a sharp pivot
- 7:47here. Xandra Poll has addressed for
- 7:49the first time publicly her friendship falling out with Alex
- 7:53Earl. OK, so I do want to note, I hate
- 7:55to give this podcast dimension, but Xander Pole was on the toast
- 7:58today and she publicly spoke about her infamous friendship
- 8:01breakup with fellow TikTok star Alex Earl.
- 8:04Unsurprisingly, shouldn't really say that much.
- 8:07She basically just said that they drifted apart after
- 8:09college. I feel like there's certain
- 8:11things. There's no bad blood, there's no
- 8:14problems. I feel like you're in college
- 8:16and you're really close to people and then, yeah, you
- 8:18graduate and everyone's kind of going their own separate
- 8:21directions and that's life. And I'm still close with a bunch
- 8:25of my other college friends. But you know, it's people are
- 8:29always going to be curious. People are always going to bring
- 8:31stuff up. It's always going to be like a
- 8:33part of my story. But I feel like, I don't know,
- 8:35I'm doing so many other amazing things and I live an amazing
- 8:38life and have an amazing friend. So whenever people say that, I'm
- 8:41like, I get where you guys are coming from, but it's really
- 8:43just not that deep. Do we believe this personally?
- 8:47Not really. I think there's enough evidence
- 8:50over the years that prove that they've intentionally stayed
- 8:52away from each other and avoided each other, but I don't think
- 8:56that we will ever actually get the T on anything bigger that
- 8:59happened between the two of them at this point.
- 9:01Now, she also did address her breakup from Jack, who she dated
- 9:05throughout university and she was dating when she became
- 9:08really TikTok famous. And they went through this
- 9:10infamous breakup, and Jack has been dating a New Girl now, and
- 9:14they've been making a lot of content together.
- 9:16And people are kind of like trolling them because I guess he
- 9:19had a lot of issues being in Xandra's content and didn't like
- 9:22that she was very online. And now he has a girlfriend
- 9:24who's basically trying to do the same thing.
- 9:26He pleaded with me to, you know, not talk about all his
- 9:30atrocities that he did with me. And I said, you know what, For
- 9:34the sake of our relationship and like, how long we were together
- 9:38for, like 4 years. And it was a very traumatic 4
- 9:40years. But like, I loved him a lot at
- 9:43one point, even though he did all those awful things.
- 9:45So then I was like, you know what, fine.
- 9:47You don't want to be on the Internet.
- 9:48Don't bother me. Yeah, and I won't talk about you
- 9:51and all this thing. And then all the sudden I was
- 9:54like, oh, interesting. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 9:58many scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 10:00I love you guys. Please remember to rate review
- 10:03and subscribe, please Spotify star rate US.
- 10:06Annabelle will talk to you guys tomorrow and then I will talk to
- 10:08you on Thursday. Bye.
