- 0:54Welcome in to another exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:56I'm your host, Bubba Starts, and with me today is Jessica Hoch.
- 0:59Welcome to the show, Jessica.
- 1:01Hi.
- 1:01Thanks for having me.
- 1:02I'm excited to be here.
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:04Well, it's been a while since we first met, but nice to reconnect here on the show.
- 1:09Off the top, I'd love to just kinda give you the floor and let you give us a little bit of
- 1:14your backstory, and then we'll get into all the stuff that you're doing now.
- 1:18Okay.
- 1:18Awesome.
- 1:19Well, hey.
- 1:20I'm Jessica.
- 1:21I've been a yoga and meditation teacher for seventeen years now, which is kinda crazy to
- 1:26say.
- 1:26And all of this started with that practice.
- 1:29So I was creating jewelry to be really intentional, meaningful gifts for my students
- 1:35and for people that were just close to me.
- 1:38More people were interested in having custom intentional pieces made for them.
- 1:43And, honestly, it's just blossomed from there.
- 1:45We've been in business for ten years now.
- 1:48Everything that we have is still handmade in house with genuine stones and crystals.
- 1:52And we also take people beyond their bracelet and into experiences like workshops, retreats,
- 1:58our monthly bracelet club where we have a members call each month and and talk about the
- 2:04intentions behind the bracelets.
- 2:06So, really, my background is that yoga and meditation, and I really love bringing people
- 2:11into their bodies, into their intentions to really foster that healing and transformation
- 2:19and and empowerment behind, you know, what they're working on in their lives.
- 2:24And then also a little bit about my background is I have a degree in apparel design.
- 2:28So just as much as I love intention, I love color and design, and I've been an artist my
- 2:33whole life and come from a family, a long line of artists, so on both sides.
- 2:37So color has definitely been color and design have been a part of my whole life.
- 2:42I grew up in a flower shop and surrounded by eye candy and color.
- 2:46And so it's just been my whole life has been color and design and with yoga coming in,
- 2:53creating a lot of intention and meaning behind all that.
- 2:55So yeah.
- 2:58Yeah.
- 2:59You took the words right out of my my mouth.
- 3:02Yoga is everything intentional.
- 3:05Right?
- 3:05Every movement, every pose has a a meaning behind it.
- 3:10And, obviously, coming from the background that you have, it makes perfect sense that you've
- 3:15landed on what you do now, which is bringing together kind of both sides of that.
- 3:21Mhmm.
- 3:22Is there so you're still teaching yoga now as well?
- 3:25I'm teaching just for special retreats and events like that.
- 3:28I don't have any weekly classes at the moment.
- 3:30Mhmm.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:32Well, there's that's a lot of work.
- 3:34I
- 3:35It is.
- 3:35I yeah.
- 3:36At the height of my teaching, I was teaching, like, 28 classes a week, and I'm like, okay.
- 3:40We're this is enough now.
- 3:41But that was, like, pre kids, pre marriage.
- 3:44So yeah.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:47Well, you don't have a life besides the yoga studio at that point.
- 3:51No.
- 3:51Not really.
- 3:52Yeah.
- 3:54Mhmm.
- 3:55So safe to say that you have found some balance there where you're still able to connect with,
- 4:01you know, your yogis.
- 4:02Right?
- 4:03And you're still able to teach and to do that.
- 4:05But it seems like you've built not just, you know, a business, but it seems like you have a
- 4:10community around your artist side now and developing and and making bracelets and
- 4:16workshopping and all of this.
- 4:18Mhmm.
- 4:18What was is that kinda does that come from the yoga world?
- 4:21Because it's so, like, community is intentional in yoga as well.
- 4:25Did you kinda bring that over from that side?
- 4:28A little bit.
- 4:29Yeah.
- 4:29I mean, you know, in yoga, it's a satsang.
- 4:31It's your, you know, yoga community.
- 4:33And that's one of the pillars of Maximalas and really, like, my passion behind what I'm doing
- 4:38is community and having people feel really supported and included and part of something,
- 4:43you know, part of that village.
- 4:46Mhmm.
- 4:47And that's everything these days.
- 4:49It's so it's so interesting to me that, you know, thirty years ago, right, we all knew
- 4:56this.
- 4:57And then over the last three decades of the Internet just kind of becoming what it is now,
- 5:04that it feels like we're getting back to that and now actually using the Internet to foster
- 5:11more communities.
- 5:13And and I see it a lot in our world with our, you know, our music world, especially, and the
- 5:19podcast to some degree as well, that it's all about those communities.
- 5:23We have several Facebook groups and just bringing people in and connecting with other
- 5:28people.
- 5:29And I feel like it's more important today than maybe it's ever been in history.
- 5:33I couldn't agree more.
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:34Absolutely.
- 5:35We're so it's like we're so connected digitally, but we're so disconnected.
- 5:39Like, people are we're so connected easily, but we feel very isolated.
- 5:43So being really intentional about that connection and that digital community, is so
- 5:48important.
- 5:49Mhmm.
- 5:50Yeah.
- 5:50How you could be connected and detached
- 5:52all at the same time.
- 5:54But where it's where we're at in this world and in this
- 5:58Mhmm.
- 5:59Mhmm.
- 5:59Life.
- 6:00And it's been so interesting.
- 6:01And I think for people of our age, I'll be 40 in May.
- 6:07I've got, like, see it go from an analog world.
- 6:09And we moved from the Chicago area.
- 6:11So I remember, you know, Windows 95 coming and, like, my neighbors connected to the Internet.
- 6:16Right?
- 6:17And then Oh, yeah.
- 6:17Remember dial up.
- 6:19Dial up.
- 6:20Oh, yeah.
- 6:20And then, like, we didn't have it yet, but then shortly after that, we moved out to Deadwood,
- 6:24South Dakota.
- 6:25We didn't have Internet in the house until, like, my senior year of high school.
- 6:29So, like, almost moved, like, back in time moving out there.
- 6:33When we moved to Deadwood, we weren't living in town.
- 6:35We were living in the middle the woods.
- 6:37So it was it was very different.
- 6:40And now I feel like, you know, just over the last maybe, you know, less than ten years where
- 6:46I've really been connected and staying there, but realizing that, like, I want to bring this
- 6:52community and bring people together.
- 6:54Like, that's that's what I love.
- 6:56I'm not on the Internet to, you know, to to research the next big thing or to look up
- 7:02celebrities or, you know Yeah.
- 7:05Yeah.
- 7:05I don't mean to laugh so hard at that.
- 7:06Yeah.
- 7:07Yeah.
- 7:08It it's just never been what I've used it for.
- 7:10It's always been about how do I connect and network with other people that are doing the
- 7:16things that I want to be doing.
- 7:17And that's why it was really great to be involved with, you know, mostly with Kelly
- 7:23Wagner, obviously, and she was a big part of Awaken Your Spiritual Curiosity, the event in
- 7:30Sioux Falls where we had met while you were scooting around.
- 7:33And
- 7:35Clean my broken foot.
- 7:36Yes.
- 7:37Yeah.
- 7:37Well, things happen.
- 7:39Right?
- 7:39Absolutely.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40And you handled it with such grace.
- 7:42I think a lot of people would have just, like, been, like, you know, I'm not going.
- 7:45I'm not gonna roll around on this thing and to do this.
- 7:48And and you seem like you're kinda having fun with it by the end of the day too.
- 7:52I was.
- 7:53I kinda miss
- 7:53the scooter sometimes.
- 7:54I'm like, it was so convenient.
- 7:57Well, it takes me back.
- 7:59It's like, yeah.
- 7:59I wish I could skateboard.
- 8:01I'm just too scared to do it anymore.
- 8:03Right?
- 8:03Yeah.
- 8:04We don't bounce like we used to.
- 8:05That's, like, so boring.
- 8:06And that's what it is.
- 8:08Right?
- 8:08We we've lost that, that flexibility, from bouncing back.
- 8:13I just I played basketball with the wife and kids, and we were, like, super intense.
- 8:17Right?
- 8:18My kids are four foot tall.
- 8:19I'm usually just standing there and swatting them.
- 8:22But, like, my body hurt.
- 8:24I'm like Yeah.
- 8:25And we weren't running up and down.
- 8:27We were playing a half court game, and I was
- 8:28just like, oh, you are not and we work out a little bit and to do that, but it takes a lot
- 8:33lot of effort to to keep up, the older we get.
- 8:36Mhmm.
- 8:37Oh, yeah.
- 8:37My husband's playing soccer again,
- 8:39and he's like his first game, he goes, oh
- 8:41my god.
- 8:42He's like, that was intense.
- 8:44So
- 8:44I remember going to college, and, I was a three sport athlete in high school.
- 8:50So it was, like, soccer in the fall and spring, basketball all winter, and doing all of these
- 8:55things, baseball all summer.
- 8:57And I took that when I went to went away to college.
- 9:00I wasn't playing any sports and just kinda hanging out.
- 9:03I wasn't working out or doing anything.
- 9:05And then trying to come back, and I had a year of eligibility left in our spring soccer, And I
- 9:10was dead.
- 9:10They put me out there to start, and I was, like, ten minutes in.
- 9:13I'm like, sub, man.
- 9:14Like, somebody get me out of here.
- 9:16It was a secondator.
- 9:17Am I doing?
- 9:18Yeah.
- 9:18Just no shape trying to come back with no practice.
- 9:21You're like That's wild.
- 9:22You if you don't use it, you lose it very quickly.
- 9:25And I was 18, 19 years old at that time.
- 9:28Yeah.
- 9:29Yeah.
- 9:30Yep.
- 9:31So what's kind of the most important thing?
- 9:33I mean, you're obviously doing so much.
- 9:35You're you're creating all the time.
- 9:37Obviously, you know, you need to sell pieces to maintain the business.
- 9:41But is it mostly around, like, just creating and selling, or is a lot of what you do on a
- 9:46daily, weekly basis focused more around, like, your workshops and the community?
- 9:52It's very much fifty fifty, I would say.
- 9:55Well, I mean, it ebbs and flows.
- 9:57Sometimes it's more community focused.
- 9:58Sometimes it's more product like, right now, we're pretty heavily product focused because
- 10:02we're coming into the holidays.
- 10:04But now as we move into, like, post Black Friday and all of that and coming into, you
- 10:09know, the winter season in January, we start to focus much more on community because we're
- 10:15talking about creating your intentions for the new year and coming together and reflecting on,
- 10:19you know, how did this past year go?
- 10:21What what do I wanna see happen in the year to come up?
- 10:23So it definitely kinda ebbs and flows depending on the season, but they're both always there
- 10:29for sure.
- 10:30And our Moxie monthly bracelet club, every month, we have a a members only call.
- 10:35And so that's like, we come on.
- 10:37We have a Zoom.
- 10:38We're live.
- 10:38We could go back and forth, do guided meditation with that, and walk through the
- 10:42intention of the monthly bracelet.
- 10:44Mhmm.
- 10:45How interesting.
- 10:47And, yeah, of course, with the holidays coming up as we're recording this, you need to have
- 10:51the product out there.
- 10:53Now are you doing a lot of, like, holiday fairs where you're setting up similar to Awaken and
- 10:58and hanging out all days and selling on the weekends?
- 11:01And
- 11:02Yep.
- 11:02Yeah.
- 11:03I have a lot of shows.
- 11:04I think I have 20 shows before the end of the year, so we've got a lot coming up in the next
- 11:08four weeks.
- 11:09That's a
- 11:09lot of setup and teardown.
- 11:11It is.
- 11:11And I'm actually doing another show while what Kelly's helping facilitate with it out in Costa
- 11:16Mesa in Orange County.
- 11:17So I'm excited for that one in December.
- 11:19Yeah.
- 11:20We've got a lot.
- 11:20I travel with this business too.
- 11:22So that's the thing about the Internet too that's really amazing is that the community can
- 11:26be as broad as you want it to be.
- 11:27It's not just you're not confined to just local.
- 11:30You can have a community that's across the whole country, which is amazing.
- 11:35Yeah.
- 11:35And that's exactly what we've built, especially with our music community, which is where I fell
- 11:40out of.
- 11:40As a songwriter, that's why I started, and most of our episodes are with those.
- 11:44But I have very, you know, varying interests in in my life, and I and I love supporting small
- 11:51businesses.
- 11:51I mean, that's just part of who I am and not necessarily, like, every small business.
- 11:57It is right, but especially people who are kind of in this in this space, which for me, you
- 12:04know, energy healing and music are kind of one in the same, although a lot of people don't
- 12:09think of it that way.
- 12:10Oh, absolutely.
- 12:11I mean, think about sound healing.
- 12:13That it's a sound healing is huge right now and up and coming, which is great.
- 12:17I mean, it's an ancient practice, but now it's finally getting the traction that it needs and
- 12:22deserves.
- 12:23You know?
- 12:23So and, yeah, sound healing, the different frequencies people talk about within their
- 12:29songs.
- 12:30You know?
- 12:30So it's it's amazing.
- 12:32And, also, even thinking about artists, when I sit and I work and I'm at my table so this is
- 12:37my table here with all my beads again.
- 12:39And when I sit and work at my table, I definitely have music going.
- 12:43You know?
- 12:44I couldn't I mean, I could sit in silence, and sometimes it requires that.
- 12:47But most of the time, there's some sort of music playing.
- 12:51Mhmm.
- 12:52I'd love for you to share a little bit about your your process.
- 12:55Now, obviously, with a custom piece, it's a lot different.
- 12:59But if you're just in the studio creating, where does the inspiration come from for new
- 13:03pieces for you?
- 13:04Is there a standard kind of models that you work with in different things, or is everything
- 13:10just a a new stroke of inspiration?
- 13:12Does it start with a crystal and kind of builds around that?
- 13:16Or or I I'm intrigued.
- 13:18Well, how does it how does it begin?
- 13:20The creative process.
- 13:21Yes.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:22I I would say, you know, it the process is there's always an intention behind it.
- 13:26So there's the intention, and then I will research stones and crystals.
- 13:30Now I I have a pretty good grip.
- 13:31I've been doing it for ten years on what stones and crystals would support that intention?
- 13:35And then I play with the design, you know, the colors, the textures, the balance of the piece,
- 13:40and then it it comes to life.
- 13:43I would say that, you know, the intention, the inspiration behind that can be different.
- 13:46Every month, we have moxie monthly, and it's a different intention each month.
- 13:50And we are on month 80 right now.
- 13:52So I have created 80 different bracelets for the last eighty months, which is, like, almost
- 13:57six years.
- 13:58And that one is really interesting because I start to hear not literally here, but, like, I
- 14:04start to notice different patterns and different intentions or things that people are
- 14:10mentioning.
- 14:10Like, for example, standing in awe.
- 14:13This was last month.
- 14:14November was standing I stand in awe.
- 14:16And there was a lot of conversation coming up with people around me, other, you know,
- 14:20collaborators, where they're like, I'm just in awe of, like, the beauty of the world.
- 14:24Even though there's all this stuff happening in the world, there's so much beauty.
- 14:28Or, you know, I have a huge garden in my backyard, and you can't help but stand in awe
- 14:33when you take a tiny seed to, you know, a 40 foot vine with 80, you know, fruits on it.
- 14:39It's it's unreal.
- 14:40You know?
- 14:41So that was kind of the inspiration behind it.
- 14:43So then it was like, okay.
- 14:44Well, what kind of colors, what kind of stones make me think of awe?
- 14:50And then, you know, what kind of pattern do I want it to have that would inspire that?
- 14:54And so we kinda move through that.
- 14:56And then if I do custom pieces, that's different.
- 14:58I'm gonna sit down with you.
- 14:59We're gonna have a conversation.
- 15:00We're gonna say, you know, what are you working on right now?
- 15:02Where do you feel like you want support?
- 15:04And then I'm gonna go in and figure out what kind of stones and crystals, are gonna best
- 15:08support that, and then we can have a conversation.
- 15:11Mhmm.
- 15:12How many pieces are you creating daily?
- 15:15I mean, is it like you know, are you doing five to 10 in a day, or is it just, like, one each
- 15:20day?
- 15:21Is it different intentions throughout the day?
- 15:24Or yeah.
- 15:25There's there's so much here.
- 15:27So it's interesting because as an artist, people think that you are sitting and creating
- 15:32all day every day, which would be a dream.
- 15:34Most of the time, I'm on my computer and running an ecommerce business.
- 15:37So I would say I have days where I am in the studio, and this is, like, a dedicated studio
- 15:44day, and I will be I will create any number of styles.
- 15:48So, like, I might have 12 different styles depending on how many customs we're working on.
- 15:54But then other days, I I won't be designing at all.
- 15:56So it just depends on on the day.
- 15:59It's not consistent.
- 16:00I wish.
- 16:01I need to dedicate time every day to just be in here and play and create.
- 16:05That would be great.
- 16:06Yeah.
- 16:07Well, that takes intention.
- 16:09Right?
- 16:09Yes.
- 16:10It does.
- 16:10And I found that in the podcasting world, you know, when I first started, the calendar was
- 16:16just open.
- 16:17Right?
- 16:17And you book in every day.
- 16:19So then I was having, you know, scheduled interviews every day, but, like, I have other
- 16:23stuff that I need to do.
- 16:24As as you, I I spend a lot of time on my computer.
- 16:28Right?
- 16:28I'm running not necessarily an ecommerce business, but in a business on the Internet,
- 16:33whether it's finding new people to network with or promoting our show and marketing ourselves
- 16:37and, you know, you know, dealing with clients.
- 16:40So, you know, a lot of our stuff is client service related now.
- 16:44So I wasn't I wasn't able to change hats that fast.
- 16:48Right?
- 16:48Like, being someone who's on an interview and being someone who's being a mentor are two very
- 16:54different things.
- 16:55So and I was just, like, constantly having where I finally was like, okay.
- 17:00We're gonna dedicate two days a week to interviews, and Tuesdays and Thursdays are it.
- 17:04And we'll just do interviews those days and then limiting those.
- 17:08There were some days I was doing six, seven interviews, and I get to the end of the
- 17:11afternoon.
- 17:11I'm just, like, exhausted.
- 17:12Right.
- 17:13Yeah.
- 17:14Completely wrecked.
- 17:14Well, you've had seven get to know you conversations, and you're coming up with
- 17:19questions on the fly.
- 17:21So I just recently went to Nashville, and, I was working the red carpet at the Grand Ole
- 17:26Opry, and it was for the Joseph Music Awards.
- 17:29These are all the autographs that I got.
- 17:32Right?
- 17:32Because I couldn't keep a a tab on how many people were coming through.
- 17:36I did a 150 interviews in a three and a half hour period just
- 17:42That's exhausting.
- 17:43Next.
- 17:44Next.
- 17:44Next.
- 17:45Yeah.
- 17:46And this massive line.
- 17:47Yeah.
- 17:47Because that was their moment.
- 17:48Right?
- 17:49This is your moment in the sun.
- 17:50You've been nominated for this award.
- 17:52And and it wasn't necessarily about, like, my content from it.
- 17:55It was about you and giving you this time.
- 17:58And, you know, we finished up.
- 18:00They were finally like, hey.
- 18:01The show's starting.
- 18:02Are you like, do you wanna go in?
- 18:04I was like, yeah.
- 18:04We should probably do that.
- 18:05Right?
- 18:06We should probably do that.
- 18:07Time.
- 18:08But, like, as we're, like, tearing down and everything, I'm just like, oh, I am wrecked.
- 18:13I feel like I've played a, you know, a whole soccer game.
- 18:15Right?
- 18:16And I've been running up down the field the whole time.
- 18:18And and I don't often because we're just talking, I don't often give myself the grace
- 18:23of, like, this is work, and it's very hard work for most people.
- 18:27And most people just aren't built for it at all to stand Yeah.
- 18:31In front of a crowd and to be on in front of a camera and to do those things.
- 18:36So I need to start giving myself a little bit of time and a little bit of grace, and that
- 18:41that's actually a a mantra I have right in front of my face is I give myself grace.
- 18:46Like Yes.
- 18:47We're just figuring
- 18:47this out.
- 18:48We haven't been doing this for ten years.
- 18:50Like, yes, I've been having conversations my entire life.
- 18:53I haven't shut up since I learned how to talk at three years old.
- 18:56Right?
- 18:57Perfect.
- 18:57But it's been a learning and growing process over the course of just the last eighteen
- 19:03months to figure out who we are in this space, who is our, you know, customer.
- 19:10Right?
- 19:10I that's kinda weird because everyone is becomes friends.
- 19:13As soon as you're on the other side of that camera or you're standing next to me, you're
- 19:17you're now a friend, and I'm just trying to help you in whatever way I can.
- 19:21I feel that way with my customers.
- 19:22Yeah.
- 19:23Yeah.
- 19:24And how can you not when you're sharing something so personal to your and they're
- 19:29bringing you their fears and doubts and stresses and anxieties and looking for you to
- 19:36kind of be a to build them a tool for, you know, not necessarily always, like, healing
- 19:43that, but giving them some comfort.
- 19:45Right?
- 19:46Supporting it.
- 19:46Yeah.
- 19:47Mhmm.
- 19:47Absolutely.
- 19:48Mhmm.
- 19:49It's amazing.
- 19:50I I love it.
- 19:51Jessica, I know I don't wanna keep you forever.
- 19:53I feel like we could just sit here and talk all day.
- 19:56We could chat for a while.
- 19:57Yeah.
- 19:58So Yeah.
- 19:59Tell everyone how they can find you online, how they can become part of the workshops and the
- 20:04the malas monthly, and just all the things.
- 20:07Awesome.
- 20:07Yeah.
- 20:08So if you could just go to moxiemalas.com, everything is there.
- 20:12We have a section for upcoming events and workshops.
- 20:15We have a section for moxie monthly, the bracelet club.
- 20:18You can join as a month to month, or you can do an annual membership.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:23Otherwise, I'm also on Instagram.
- 20:24A little bit on TikTok.
- 20:25I'm trying.
- 20:26Please don't judge me.
- 20:27We need some grace in that.
- 20:29But, yeah, Instagram around there too, so check us out.
- 20:33Yeah.
- 20:33Well, fantastic, Jessica.
- 20:35It was such a pleasure to have met you this year, and I I can't wait to see more from you
- 20:40and to have them all a piece of my own here in the future.
- 20:45Good luck to you with all of the holiday fairs and your travels out there.
- 20:49I'm sure Costa Mesa in December will be a nice respite from our Upper Midwestern winters
- 20:56It would be nice already
- 20:58blowing in.
- 20:58I was actually just up in the Twin Cities.
- 21:00I hit a Vikings tailgate and the game a few weeks ago, and it was cold outside and blowing,
- 21:08and it was like, oh, winter's, like, right around the corner, and and we need to get
- 21:12prepared.
- 21:12So thank you so much for a little bit of your time today, and thank you for being part of
- 21:17this team.
- 21:18Yeah.
- 21:18Thank you.
- 21:19Appreciate it.
