- 0:02Speaker 1: Cal Poly is in session. Students swarm through campus and
- 0:05Speaker 1: file in and out of classes. They're thinking about the
- 0:07Speaker 1: next chapter reading they have tonight, their next class, their
- 0:10Speaker 1: new dorm, their senior project, how to get to the gym,
- 0:12Speaker 1: what's for dinner tonight? Where's the nearest bathroom? Kate and
- 0:17Speaker 1: I know things can get a bit chaotic as a
- 0:19Speaker 1: student navigating the ins and outs of college life.
- 0:23Speaker 2: At cal Poly. We focus on learning by doing, but
- 0:25Speaker 2: sometimes you don't know what to do well. Emma and
- 0:28Speaker 2: I are here to answer your who, what, when, where,
- 0:31Speaker 2: why and howse Here on CP one oh one Learned
- 0:33Speaker 2: by Listening, presented by KCPR ninety one point three. Hi Mustang,
- 0:37Speaker 2: I'm Kate lopensk a fourth year journalism student.
- 0:40Speaker 1: And I'm Emma Hughes, a fourth year English student here
- 0:42Speaker 1: at cal Poly, and.
- 0:44Speaker 2: We're here to share our tell all guide on how
- 0:45Speaker 2: to survive and thrive at cal Poly.
- 0:48Speaker 1: San Luis Obispo. So grab a notebook. You may want
- 0:50Speaker 1: to write this down.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of CP one and one.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Today we wanted to talk about a pivotal accessory to
- 1:06Speaker 2: the college experience alcohol.
- 1:09Speaker 1: Whether or not you choose to consume alcohol, you will
- 1:11Speaker 1: inevitably be in the presence of it in some capacity
- 1:14Speaker 1: or another while at college.
- 1:16Speaker 2: With this in mind, it's important to be aware of
- 1:18Speaker 2: the social etiquette and most importantly, safety tips while drinking.
- 1:22Speaker 1: That's why Kate and I are going to share our
- 1:24Speaker 1: own encounters with alcohol and trust me, there's been many,
- 1:28Speaker 1: while also breaking down tolerance, hangovers, and of course, most importantly,
- 1:32Speaker 1: some safety tips.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So to kickstart this episode, we thought it would be fun, well,
- 1:37Speaker 2: not necessarily fun, but Emma's idea of fun.
- 1:40Speaker 1: To write thatally fun ironically.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Fun to read the Office of Student Rights and Responsibility
- 1:46Speaker 2: Statement on alcohol use, and this just serves as a
- 1:49Speaker 2: helpful reminder before we dive into the nitty gritty details
- 1:52Speaker 2: of all that is alcohol.
- 1:54Speaker 1: The statement is as follows. In an effort to maintain
- 1:57Speaker 1: a high level of student success and public life health,
- 2:00Speaker 1: and in accordance with state law, all students are prohibited
- 2:03Speaker 1: from possession and or consumption of alcohol on campus outside
- 2:08Speaker 1: of authorized areas. Any student under the age of twenty
- 2:12Speaker 1: one is strictly prohibited from possession and or consumption of
- 2:15Speaker 1: alcohol on campus or at off campus university hosted events.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Student events are not allowed to serve or sell alcohol
- 2:24Speaker 1: on campus. Thus, university events, meetings, and activities that are
- 2:28Speaker 1: student club and or student managed are not considered university
- 2:32Speaker 1: events under this definition unless they are under the direction
- 2:36Speaker 1: and control of a university host and have an approved permit.
- 2:40Speaker 2: Okay, take a breath.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I now that was like a moth. Do you take
- 2:43Speaker 1: a break.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I'm going to break this down because yeah, this is
- 2:47Speaker 2: a big scary statement. So essentially, what this is saying
- 2:50Speaker 2: is that alcohol is not allowed in any resident halls,
- 2:54Speaker 2: which are dorms or even apartments that are on campus.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And even if the resident is able to legally purchase alcohol,
- 3:03Speaker 2: it's still not allowed because it is campus grounds. So
- 3:06Speaker 2: quite a mouthful, kind of confusing, but there it is
- 3:09Speaker 2: all adult.
- 3:10Speaker 1: But I think if you are twenty one and like
- 3:12Speaker 1: you're going to a football game, you can buy yourself.
- 3:14Speaker 2: A beer, yes, but only you can't bring alcohol into
- 3:18Speaker 2: the events, but only not from vendors there. Yes, so confusing.
- 3:23Speaker 2: That's why we're doing this episode exactly.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Now that we've gone over some of the campus rules
- 3:28Speaker 1: for drinking, let's shift to talk about some neat to
- 3:31Speaker 1: no information before you actually start drinking. Most importantly, again,
- 3:35Speaker 1: let's talk about some safety tips. So the first tip
- 3:40Speaker 1: we really wanted to emphasize here is the buddy rule.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So you learn this back in preschool, kindergarten. It still
- 3:48Speaker 1: applies to you in college. So even just when you're
- 3:52Speaker 1: going to an event with alcohol, it's always good to
- 3:55Speaker 1: have someone in your back pocket who you can be like, please, like,
- 3:59Speaker 1: let's watch over each other tonight, whether you're drinking or not,
- 4:03Speaker 1: just having a friend, especially if it's a sober friend
- 4:06Speaker 1: who is going to remain sober that night. Just employ
- 4:10Speaker 1: this buddy rule and make sure you guys look out
- 4:12Speaker 1: for each other when out and especially when consuming alcohol totally.
- 4:16Speaker 2: I also like the phrase go together, leave together. Yes,
- 4:20Speaker 2: if plans end up changing, you need to update each
- 4:22Speaker 2: other and make sure that each other is safe. But
- 4:25Speaker 2: like typically you should abide by that.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I mean shameless plug. Like go check out how to
- 4:30Speaker 1: Party at Polly one of our other episodes where we
- 4:33Speaker 1: literally break down the party scene and we talk about
- 4:36Speaker 1: this buddy system and just knowing like if you go together,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you leave together, or you at least make like an
- 4:42Speaker 1: evacuation plan that is safe for all parties involved. Another
- 4:47Speaker 1: thing we really want to emphasize is just your ability.
- 4:52Speaker 1: If you are sober, or even if you're not, but
- 4:55Speaker 1: you're sober enough to recognize that something might be off
- 4:58Speaker 1: with someone else, it is then your responsibility to intervene.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Intervene if anything looks off, if anything is you know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: not as it should be. If someone looks a little
- 5:11Speaker 1: maybe too intoxicated, too sick, if they seem like they
- 5:16Speaker 1: are just lost, don't know where they're going, what they're doing,
- 5:20Speaker 1: and a lot of it is because of an overconsumption,
- 5:23Speaker 1: maybe of alcohol, intervene. Do what you can to help
- 5:26Speaker 1: a fellow friend out.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Okay, And then next let's get into the amnesty rule
- 5:31Speaker 2: also known as the Good Samaritan policy. So a person
- 5:34Speaker 2: who dials nine to one one is protected from any
- 5:36Speaker 2: further disciplinary action. But one of the rules is that
- 5:40Speaker 2: you cannot abandon the person that you are calling on
- 5:42Speaker 2: behalf of, or else you will get in trouble. So,
- 5:45Speaker 2: for example, if you are calling on behalf of someone
- 5:48Speaker 2: who is underage and you are underage yourself, you will
- 5:51Speaker 2: not be issued an MIP also known as a minor
- 5:54Speaker 2: in possession. So this does not mean that the other
- 5:57Speaker 2: people around you are safe from any repercus this only
- 6:01Speaker 2: protects the person who calls. However, this only keeps you
- 6:05Speaker 2: safe from the law and not cal poly disciplinary action.
- 6:08Speaker 2: So cal POLY states that they would rather have you
- 6:12Speaker 2: call and report the incident rather than hide it, because
- 6:16Speaker 2: if you do hide it, then your disciplinety action will
- 6:19Speaker 2: be a lot.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Worse and it might still seem like, oh well, then
- 6:22Speaker 1: why would I call? But it boils down to saving
- 6:25Speaker 1: a life mm hmmah, even at the risk of like
- 6:28Speaker 1: a minor, like literally slap on the wrist, like yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 1: it's not like a person's life is in danger, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: you if that person died or experienced any sort of
- 6:40Speaker 1: serious consequences, you know you're gonna live with that for
- 6:43Speaker 1: the rest of your life because you're posed out across
- 6:46Speaker 1: the roads of like do I call for the safety
- 6:48Speaker 1: of my friend or even for the safety of this stranger,
- 6:52Speaker 1: And it's like you you have to ultimately make that
- 6:54Speaker 1: decision for yourself. But this is why it's called the
- 6:58Speaker 1: good Samaritan because because you have to really embody that.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Also in addition, for further like cal Poly rulings on
- 7:06Speaker 2: the issue. So in the fine print, it says cal
- 7:08Speaker 2: POLY will consider the reporting of the incident when determining
- 7:12Speaker 2: any disciplinary action imposed on the student group or club.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So essentially making that call will ultimately benefit you rather
- 7:20Speaker 2: than do anything against you.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Another thing to keep in mind when drinking, you know,
- 7:27Speaker 1: not drinking from an open bottle, open container. If you
- 7:31Speaker 1: go to a party and there's like a punch bowl,
- 7:34Speaker 1: just essentially no open bottles. Like, don't pick up an
- 7:37Speaker 1: open bottle and start drinking from it. You don't know
- 7:39Speaker 1: what's in that bottle. You don't know if anyone spiked it.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Work on like covering your drinks even when you're like
- 7:45Speaker 1: dancing or you're talking. Don't set your drinks down if
- 7:48Speaker 1: they are uncovered where anyone could slip something inside your drink.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Just take cautionary measures and be aware of your surroundings
- 7:56Speaker 1: when you are drinking, or do it for your friends
- 7:59Speaker 1: if you aren't.
- 8:00Speaker 2: We know that this is all so serious so far,
- 8:03Speaker 2: but when it comes to college drinking culture, like we
- 8:06Speaker 2: just have to say it, you know. Yeah, So next,
- 8:10Speaker 2: let's talk a little bit about hazing. So this is
- 8:14Speaker 2: still very prominent in cal poly FSL culture. It's often
- 8:20Speaker 2: used as a way to flex like your toughness and
- 8:23Speaker 2: the guys are like, Yeah, I was forced to like
- 8:26Speaker 2: chug a rack of beer and hike up to the
- 8:28Speaker 2: top of Bishop.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And it's almost like a testament to like you, like, oh,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I've overcome this hardship of like doing this really tough
- 8:36Speaker 1: task and it's like of drinking, like risking your life
- 8:41Speaker 1: for like nothing.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah, but let's read the fine print again. So hazing
- 8:47Speaker 2: is a violation of cal Poly's standards for student conduct
- 8:50Speaker 2: as well as the California Penal Code Section two four
- 8:53Speaker 2: five point six. Students who participate in hazing, even if
- 8:57Speaker 2: only as an observer, may face saying from both the
- 9:00Speaker 2: university and the criminal justice system. So we know it's
- 9:05Speaker 2: fun to like carry on a tradition or I don't know,
- 9:09Speaker 2: be a part of something big, but if you find
- 9:12Speaker 2: yourself in that situation, just take a step back, reflect,
- 9:16Speaker 2: realize that it's not a safe situation that you're in,
- 9:19Speaker 2: and preferably report.
- 9:21Speaker 1: It when in doubt, just report any situation. Alrighty, now
- 9:26Speaker 1: that we've covered that.
- 9:28Speaker 2: We got so serious, But let's get into some fun
- 9:31Speaker 2: sayings that can help you from vomiting, because that's not
- 9:36Speaker 2: what you want to have in.
- 9:37Speaker 1: So some fun little puns we have for you guys today,
- 9:41Speaker 1: beer or wine before liquor never been sicker. Liquor before beer,
- 9:47Speaker 1: you're in the clear, and beer before wine will make
- 9:51Speaker 1: you feel fine. So these are just some fun saying
- 9:54Speaker 1: that we found on the world wide Web that we
- 9:58Speaker 1: wanted to share with you.
- 10:00Speaker 2: They're helpful, Honestly, you don't.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Have to like abide by these by any means, like
- 10:05Speaker 1: obviously free will, but just keep these in mind and
- 10:09Speaker 1: be cognizant of how different alcohols will mix and what
- 10:14Speaker 1: that will mean for you.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Absolutely. And then two big ones, making sure that you
- 10:19Speaker 2: eat food and stay hydrated. Just make sure that you
- 10:22Speaker 2: have like a really good carb heavy like protein heavy
- 10:25Speaker 2: meal before like a good like pasta with some like
- 10:29Speaker 2: I don't know protein in there. Make it fun too,
- 10:31Speaker 2: like have like a dinner night with your friends and
- 10:33Speaker 2: then go like go out together. Right. Yeah. I know
- 10:37Speaker 2: that sometimes people are like, I don't want to eat
- 10:39Speaker 2: before I drink because then it'll help you get more drunk.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Honestly that's not even really.
- 10:44Speaker 1: The case, but it's again disregarding your own safety.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And you can still like feel fun and
- 10:52Speaker 2: have a good time if you eat before.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Another big one that we really shouldn't have to say,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but we just want to make sure we touch on it.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Do not, under any circumstances drink and drive, Do not
- 11:04Speaker 1: get behind a wheel, Do not operate a vehicle if
- 11:07Speaker 1: you have had anything to drink.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And then, like we said before, just like having that
- 11:12Speaker 2: sober friend, especially just like, yeah, an uber, I don't know,
- 11:19Speaker 2: if you split it between a bunch of people, maybe
- 11:22Speaker 2: it'll cost like five bucks max. And like you can
- 11:25Speaker 2: get the uber to stop at different houses as well,
- 11:27Speaker 2: so that you're not just having to go to like
- 11:28Speaker 2: one friend's house or like THEO Forrest comes to worse
- 11:31Speaker 2: like crash on the couch. It's okay, Yeah, you will
- 11:34Speaker 2: figure it out in the morning, and it's way better
- 11:37Speaker 2: than trying to navigate your own way home drunk. Yes, okay,
- 11:41Speaker 2: So now let's talk a little bit about tolerance, because
- 11:45Speaker 2: I know that this can be kind of a foggy
- 11:47Speaker 2: subject sometimes because honestly, you don't know, especially like I said,
- 11:52Speaker 2: if it's your first time being exposed to alcohol, you
- 11:55Speaker 2: might not know what your tolerance is and what that
- 11:58Speaker 2: even means. So let's talk about what that means. So
- 12:02Speaker 2: Emma did a little bit of internet research for us here,
- 12:05Speaker 2: And according to Stanford University, alcohol tolerance is a physical
- 12:09Speaker 2: and mental acclamation to alcohol developed after habitual use. And
- 12:14Speaker 2: so she beautifully broke this down for me. I'm loving
- 12:16Speaker 2: you for this. I'm giving you your flowers because you
- 12:19Speaker 2: deserve this. Yeah. Because of the definition includes the word acclamation,
- 12:24Speaker 2: your tolerance is subject to change depending on how much
- 12:27Speaker 2: and how often you drink.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Yeah, So essentially, the less you drink, the lower your tolerance,
- 12:32Speaker 1: and the more you drink, the higher your tolerance. How
- 12:35Speaker 1: we typically determine tolerance in a more conversational manner, like
- 12:39Speaker 1: even just like when introducing yourself, like at in a
- 12:43Speaker 1: party or drinking environment. It's typically by classifying ourselves as
- 12:48Speaker 1: either a lightweight or a heavyweight. So obviously, if you
- 12:52Speaker 1: are a lightweight, you can't handle as much alcohol and
- 12:54Speaker 1: therefore don't need to drink as much as a heavyweight
- 12:57Speaker 1: in order to get drunk.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And so your tolerance mainly depends on how much alcohol
- 13:03Speaker 2: you can consume without the full effect of being drunk.
- 13:07Speaker 1: So this kind of varies depending on the person and
- 13:11Speaker 1: is impacted by more specific factors like how much food
- 13:14Speaker 1: you ate that day, how much sleep you got, the
- 13:16Speaker 1: previous night, what alcohol you were drinking. Again, this goes
- 13:20Speaker 1: back to like alcohol percentage, are you mixing alcohols, what's
- 13:24Speaker 1: actually in your drink and things like that.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Alcohol tolerance is not set in stone and certainly not
- 13:30Speaker 2: the same for every individual.
- 13:32Speaker 1: I didn't like have any experience drinking before coming to college,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and then it was like a slow progression of like, oh,
- 13:41Speaker 1: I'm a lightweight, and I love to be a lightweight
- 13:43Speaker 1: because you know, it's just like one and done, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: like I don't have to worry about it, and so
- 13:48Speaker 1: my limits less gross, right Yeah, But then it like
- 13:51Speaker 1: it progresses, like the more that you are drinking and
- 13:55Speaker 1: partaking in that, the more you are like building that tolerance,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and the more you will then you know, feel the
- 14:03Speaker 1: need to drink in order to achieve like whatever level
- 14:06Speaker 1: of drunkness you are aspiring to.
- 14:09Speaker 2: While there are tests you can take are breathalyzers that
- 14:11Speaker 2: will more specifically gauge your tolerance or your drunkness, the
- 14:14Speaker 2: best way to learn your tolerance is through careful observation.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Emphasis on the careful, So whether or not you keep
- 14:20Speaker 2: track of drinks the old fashioned way, like making tallies
- 14:23Speaker 2: on your arm, which is honestly, such a vibe or
- 14:26Speaker 2: having a sober friend or a sober monitor to keep
- 14:29Speaker 2: track of you. There are always ways to learn about
- 14:31Speaker 2: your tolerance, and remember to do this in a safe manner.
- 14:34Speaker 1: This is all not to say like go out and
- 14:37Speaker 1: practice drinking to test your limits. Rather, when you are drinking,
- 14:42Speaker 1: you need to be aware of how much alcohol you
- 14:44Speaker 1: are consuming so that you can gauge how many drinks
- 14:48Speaker 1: it takes you to get drunk with like saying that
- 14:51Speaker 1: I feel like the tootsy pop owl, who is like
- 14:56Speaker 1: how many licks does it take to get to the
- 14:57Speaker 1: center of a totsy pop The owl even like jumps
- 15:01Speaker 1: the gun eats the whole lollipop in one bite. But
- 15:04Speaker 1: we don't want to do that.
- 15:05Speaker 2: So you don't want to make that mistake of where
- 15:08Speaker 2: you over indulge really quickly because you can't feel the
- 15:11Speaker 2: effects of your drinks. We've all been there. I mean,
- 15:15Speaker 2: if there's times that you get a little too excited,
- 15:18Speaker 2: and I guarantee that those drinks will kick in sooner
- 15:21Speaker 2: or not and they'll bite you in the butt. But yeah,
- 15:25Speaker 2: if you chug and drink way too fast, and like
- 15:27Speaker 2: we were talking about this before, like that moment when
- 15:29Speaker 2: you're in the bathroom, yes, and you're with like a
- 15:32Speaker 2: friend or you're by yourself and you're just like in
- 15:35Speaker 2: there and the room starts spinning and you're like, uh.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Oh, reality hits you, yeah, the same time that all
- 15:41Speaker 1: your drinks do, and you're like, not have I done?
- 15:44Speaker 2: Yeah, let's not glamorize that, Like it's not a fun
- 15:47Speaker 2: place to be.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah, especially if you are having the actual spins. It's like,
- 15:52Speaker 1: get me out of here. But this is why, you know,
- 15:56Speaker 1: knowing your tolerance is so important. It does take time
- 15:59Speaker 1: and it does take care. You can't assume your tolerance
- 16:03Speaker 1: or overestimate your abilities when drinking. So do what you
- 16:07Speaker 1: need to do, but make sure you're doing it in
- 16:09Speaker 1: a safe manner.
- 16:11Speaker 2: All right, Emma, let's play a little game of assumption
- 16:14Speaker 2: versus reality. So start us off.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yes, there is this assumption that drinking more alcohol will
- 16:21Speaker 1: prolong your feelings of drunk being drunk, and like prolong
- 16:25Speaker 1: that good feeling of being drunk, like the happy drunk things.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Saying let's keep the night rolling.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, she's like rallying, like, uh, but actually, if you
- 16:34Speaker 1: are drinking past a point oh five blood alcohol content level,
- 16:38Speaker 1: it will raise your tolerance to alcohol, and it won't
- 16:42Speaker 1: actually prolong that good feeling because point oh five scientifically
- 16:47Speaker 1: is where your peak buzz is going to be. It's
- 16:50Speaker 1: where you're still like riding that high. You're kind of
- 16:52Speaker 1: climbing up that mountain. You're reaching that peak, but it
- 16:57Speaker 1: just might not be the same buzz that it typically
- 16:59Speaker 1: is if you keep going and you keep drinking and
- 17:03Speaker 1: you over indulge. So it's better to reach that peak
- 17:07Speaker 1: and then just let it simmer, you know, have a
- 17:09Speaker 1: little come down moment. But if you keep drinking and
- 17:13Speaker 1: over indulge, you're actually not prolonging those happy, good drunk feelings.
- 17:18Speaker 2: See I didn't know about that at all. And then
- 17:21Speaker 2: kind of piggybacking off of that point, there is an
- 17:24Speaker 2: assumption that it's better to be a heavyweight, and this
- 17:27Speaker 2: is actually false, as we kind of talked about it,
- 17:29Speaker 2: because being a lightweight is actually way more cost effective, healthier,
- 17:33Speaker 2: It's just overall better for your mind, body, and soul.
- 17:36Speaker 2: That's how I feel about it.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Live, laugh, love, lightweight, I miss it. Take me back.
- 17:43Speaker 1: We're on our lightweight journey right now. Yeah, absolutely, we're
- 17:46Speaker 1: getting back to that, going back to like those joyful
- 17:49Speaker 1: feelings that alcohol can provide. Alcohol is actually a depressant,
- 17:53Speaker 1: so it can sometimes do more harm than good. You
- 17:56Speaker 1: also need to keep this in mind if you are
- 17:59Speaker 1: mixing alcohol with I mean, we've talked about it, mixing
- 18:02Speaker 1: different alcohols, but also if you are on any type
- 18:05Speaker 1: of medication, mixing that whatever medication you're on, even birth
- 18:10Speaker 1: control or even cold medicine, anything like that, if you
- 18:14Speaker 1: mix it with alcohol, it can totally impact your tolerance
- 18:19Speaker 1: and it typically makes you feel the effects of alcohol
- 18:22Speaker 1: to a higher degree, which is so dangerous because you
- 18:26Speaker 1: have your base level of what you are, like, Oh,
- 18:28Speaker 1: this is where I'm at, this is how much I
- 18:30Speaker 1: plan on drinking tonight. But when you factor in any
- 18:33Speaker 1: medication or anything like that, it's gonna overshoot you and
- 18:36Speaker 1: it's gonna make you overdose. So just be aware of that.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. So depending on how you tend to spend
- 18:45Speaker 2: your weekends, it can sometimes feel like alcohol is everywhere,
- 18:48Speaker 2: and while you're at cal Poly, you'll likely encounter it
- 18:51Speaker 2: at house parties, frat parties, restaurants, and when you're twenty one,
- 18:54Speaker 2: the downtown bars.
- 18:56Speaker 1: One of the worst parts about getting alcohol while out
- 19:00Speaker 1: are the costs. I mean, this hits home for me.
- 19:03Speaker 1: I mentioned it. That's why I'm trying to, like impart
- 19:05Speaker 1: lower my tolerance because drinks can be anywhere from eight
- 19:08Speaker 1: to twenty dollars. And like, if you're writing that eight
- 19:12Speaker 1: dollar drink, it's not quality alcohol. It's not gonna taste good,
- 19:16Speaker 1: it's not gonna feel good going down. It's just gonna be,
- 19:19Speaker 1: you know, bottom of the barrel.
- 19:22Speaker 2: It's just a beer, yeah at that point. Yeah. And
- 19:25Speaker 2: so to help with the costs, we recommend actually investing
- 19:28Speaker 2: in drinks at home and ingredients that you can have
- 19:30Speaker 2: at home. Even though ordering drinks at the bar is
- 19:33Speaker 2: supposed to be fun, it can be really intimidating at first.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Like I totally remember when I turned twenty one, I
- 19:38Speaker 2: was going on my phone, like drinks with tequila to
- 19:41Speaker 2: order it at the bar, drinks with.
- 19:43Speaker 1: The vodka, And you don't want to be the person
- 19:45Speaker 1: like staring at like the chalkboard.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Yeah no, no, no, no, no, comead. I literally remember being
- 19:52Speaker 2: at your apartment before your bar crawl, looking at my
- 19:55Speaker 2: phone trying to decide what I was gonna be that night.
- 19:58Speaker 1: I didn't know.
- 19:59Speaker 2: But anyways, let's talk about our favorite drink order. So, Emma,
- 20:03Speaker 2: what do you normally like to get? What's your go to?
- 20:06Speaker 1: My go to? Honestly, I've been switching it up lately.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Like I used to like a Madori sour and that
- 20:13Speaker 1: was fun. It was it was fun. I know. Abby
- 20:17Speaker 1: just gave me a look young in case you couldn't
- 20:19Speaker 1: in case you couldn't tell because she's not on camera,
- 20:21Speaker 1: but she gave me the most like a heinous look.
- 20:24Speaker 1: But Madori sours like they were my go to first
- 20:28Speaker 1: because that's what my friends liked. So when I first
- 20:30Speaker 1: hit the bar scene, it was like that's what they
- 20:32Speaker 1: were getting. So obviously I bandwagon and just got that too.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It's all about the bandwagon. You just do what your
- 20:37Speaker 2: older friends do.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Literally, now I've gotten like vodka cran like just a
- 20:43Speaker 1: classic vodka cran. I sometimes do the vodka Red Bull
- 20:47Speaker 1: just to give me a little pep in my step.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Also that hurts my stomach just to think about you
- 20:53Speaker 2: do you girl?
- 20:54Speaker 1: But okay, Also this is like a crazier hotter take.
- 20:58Speaker 1: But if you are like hoping for like a one
- 21:02Speaker 1: hit wonder with your drink. The sister of the AMF
- 21:08Speaker 1: is the Tokyo Tea scared.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Oh no, no, no, it's all the MF.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I was like, oh, don't say it, not THEMF now,
- 21:14Speaker 1: sister of the AMF. The Tokyo tea. It's not blue,
- 21:16Speaker 1: it's green, and it tastes better, but it still has
- 21:21Speaker 1: four liquors in it that will give you to where
- 21:25Speaker 1: you want to be and you can ride that high
- 21:29Speaker 1: for the whole night. And it's ten dollars.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Okay. See yeah, so that's where I like.
- 21:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and if I'm getting a drink and I'm wanting
- 21:36Speaker 1: to feel some type of way, I do my one
- 21:39Speaker 1: and done Tokyo tea. I also just feel cool ordering
- 21:43Speaker 1: it because Tokyo Tea just rolls off the tongue. Okay.
- 21:46Speaker 1: But that was me, and that's like my bar life.
- 21:48Speaker 1: I'm like just all over the place. I kind of
- 21:50Speaker 1: just pick and choose what I want. But kay, I
- 21:54Speaker 1: can see that you've planned out some fun little drinks
- 21:56Speaker 1: for us. I'm assuming you take inspiration from your study of.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Absolutely Like, I love making my own drinks, So if
- 22:05Speaker 2: I can just make myself a glassy little cocktail before
- 22:08Speaker 2: I go, that's what I would preferably do. I love
- 22:11Speaker 2: an apparall sprints. I love a mohito. I just love
- 22:15Speaker 2: the experience of the beverage. Like I'm the same way
- 22:17Speaker 2: with like my morning coffee. I'm not much of an
- 22:20Speaker 2: energy drink person just because I love like the active
- 22:22Speaker 2: ritual of making the drink and drinking it. I sound
- 22:26Speaker 2: so like you're.
- 22:27Speaker 1: So bougie, but that's not the I love the experience
- 22:32Speaker 1: of the beverage. I do that's anywhere.
- 22:35Speaker 2: It makes me feel like less worse about it because
- 22:38Speaker 2: I had my first four loco experience and like that
- 22:41Speaker 2: was not fun.
- 22:42Speaker 1: So I never so I've just got low, but I
- 22:46Speaker 1: don't go that low.
- 22:47Speaker 2: No, it was like I made that promise to heat
- 22:51Speaker 2: or a go when I had to follow up. Yeah,
- 22:54Speaker 2: so I had to make I had to my bargain.
- 22:57Speaker 2: But when I'm at the bar, I love a paloma.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I like my tequila. So a paloma is just tequila
- 23:02Speaker 2: limon grapefruit juice and like maybe some like club Seta,
- 23:06Speaker 2: I really like it. And then call me basic. But
- 23:10Speaker 2: I have recently started getting back into the vodka cram
- 23:14Speaker 2: with the lime.
- 23:15Speaker 1: It's good. It's really good. It feels classy, but maybe
- 23:19Speaker 1: that's just because it's classic and it's not actually classy.
- 23:21Speaker 1: It's just like, yeah, it's nice and it's always there
- 23:24Speaker 1: for you.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Alcohol either, which I like. Yeah, And then if I'm
- 23:27Speaker 2: not feeling like doing something with a hard liquor, I
- 23:30Speaker 2: will do a cider. I love a cider. Continuing on
- 23:33Speaker 2: with this really long episode, let's just talk about like
- 23:36Speaker 2: the final stage, yes, which is the hangover. And these
- 23:40Speaker 2: can be an absolute beast to manage. But we have
- 23:43Speaker 2: some tips for you. And I did a little research
- 23:46Speaker 2: on Harvard Health because Harvard and so according to them,
- 23:50Speaker 2: you should drink fluids, take pain relievers. This is this
- 23:55Speaker 2: is the catch. This is a new one. Don't take
- 23:57Speaker 2: tail and all because if there is still visual alcohol
- 24:00Speaker 2: in your system, it's really bad for your liver. So
- 24:04Speaker 2: lrip my liver. Well, when in doubt, just google that,
- 24:08Speaker 2: look it up and the internet smart. I probably should
- 24:11Speaker 2: have done that, but now I always do.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And then I like, most of the time, no matter
- 24:15Speaker 1: what it says, I'm just like, and this is what
- 24:16Speaker 1: I have is so what I'm gonna take. Don't be
- 24:18Speaker 1: like me, but make sure you are aware of the situation.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Okay, but anyways, recommendations use ibuprofen or aspirin instead, and
- 24:26Speaker 2: then also they said to take vitamin B and zinc.
- 24:30Speaker 2: And I know that you probably might not have supplements
- 24:32Speaker 2: on hand, because who does. We are twenty one years old.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I have barely anything. But just eat foods that are
- 24:40Speaker 2: rich in these products and these supplements, and then again,
- 24:44Speaker 2: just eat those carb dance foods. Make a ritual out
- 24:48Speaker 2: of it. Even I'm all about making everything an event,
- 24:51Speaker 2: as we know by my pregating tactics, like be like, okay, girls,
- 24:55Speaker 2: we're going out tonight and we're getting breakfast burritos in
- 24:58Speaker 2: the morning.
- 24:59Speaker 1: That is the way to do this, totally.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Yeah, everyone's nodding around you right now, like, yeah, that's.
- 25:04Speaker 1: How it support. Also, there are things you can do
- 25:08Speaker 1: to prevent a hangover beforehand, so we've touched on a
- 25:13Speaker 1: few of them. But like eating that full meal before
- 25:15Speaker 1: you go out, no matter how much alcohol you are
- 25:18Speaker 1: planning on consuming, it's just going to act as energy
- 25:22Speaker 1: for whatever your plans are. But it will also help
- 25:25Speaker 1: absorb some of that alcohol so you're not feeling it
- 25:27Speaker 1: the day after.
- 25:28Speaker 2: I am guilty of ending a night early just because
- 25:31Speaker 2: I'm hungry. Okay, I will leave the bar, so's I
- 25:35Speaker 2: could really go for some nick the Greek right now.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I take pride in that. I take like um, well,
- 25:43Speaker 1: it comes out of the question would I rather be
- 25:45Speaker 1: here with a measley drink in my hand or would
- 25:49Speaker 1: I rather be like at home or you know, at
- 25:51Speaker 1: a fast food joint eating some lovely food. Also just
- 25:56Speaker 1: drinking water in between your drinks. So when you are
- 25:58Speaker 1: at the bars, pacing your yourself, knowing your limits and
- 26:02Speaker 1: being able to take a step back again, don't drink
- 26:05Speaker 1: all at once, let it simmer, let those drinks cook
- 26:09Speaker 1: in your stomach, and drink that water in between any drinks. Then,
- 26:14Speaker 1: also just drinking in moderation, avoid that binge drinking. So
- 26:18Speaker 1: regardless of whether or not you're stacking drinks, make sure
- 26:21Speaker 1: that if you do plan on drinking a lot, you
- 26:24Speaker 1: separate it out. You don't drink it all at once,
- 26:28Speaker 1: and you just d don't overdrink, don't over consume your alcohol.
- 26:31Speaker 1: It will not be fun.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Mm hm, be smart and so, Emma, I'm curious, do
- 26:35Speaker 2: you have any other hangover tips that Harvard did not
- 26:39Speaker 2: lay out.
- 26:39Speaker 1: For us today? Yeah, I personally have never been that
- 26:45Speaker 1: down bad after a night out. Like at worst, I
- 26:47Speaker 1: just lay in my bed. That being said, our lovely
- 26:51Speaker 1: editor Gabby had a fantastic tip that I wanted to
- 26:55Speaker 1: share with everyone. So her advice, first and foremost is
- 26:59Speaker 1: to drink pickle juice and hear us out. Hear us out.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Alcohol is a blood thinner, hence the hangover. So drinking
- 27:08Speaker 1: pickle juice either while you're drinking alcohol, so like using
- 27:11Speaker 1: it as a chaser or anything like that, or even
- 27:15Speaker 1: just drinking it the day after it will help cure
- 27:18Speaker 1: your hangover and potentially your anxiety.
- 27:22Speaker 2: The anxiety. We talked about that before as well.
- 27:26Speaker 1: But just rely on your pickle juice and you'll be fine.
- 27:29Speaker 1: You'll be saved.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I actually, do you want to tell my funny story
- 27:31Speaker 2: before I get into it. I had such bad like
- 27:34Speaker 2: anxiety the day after drinking one time that I drove
- 27:37Speaker 2: myself to Avala Beach and I jumped in the freezing
- 27:42Speaker 2: cold water at eight am.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Because eight am, how many hours had passed since you
- 27:49Speaker 1: like consumed alcohol enough?
- 27:52Speaker 2: I mean, I I'm.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Not talking about you drinking and driving, and I'm talking
- 27:55Speaker 1: about like, did you sleep? Yes?
- 27:57Speaker 2: I did sleep. I end my nights pretty early. But yeah,
- 28:01Speaker 2: I yeah, I don't like it, like even if I
- 28:05Speaker 2: barely drink, I will be anxious the next day. So
- 28:08Speaker 2: adding on to that, I always try to get some
- 28:10Speaker 2: fresh air and movement if my body lets me. Emphasis yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 2: I mean if I'm feeling nauxious or gross the day after,
- 28:19Speaker 2: like it's fine laying in bed, but I do believe
- 28:21Speaker 2: in sweating it out, like I can either go to
- 28:24Speaker 2: the gym ork and walk around my block whatever. All right, now,
- 28:27Speaker 2: let's get into some other resources that you might find helpful.
- 28:31Speaker 2: So first of all is Mustangs for Recovery. This is
- 28:34Speaker 2: for if you need that support group if you are
- 28:36Speaker 2: struggling with your relationship with alcohol, that is always available.
- 28:40Speaker 1: There's also anonymous drug and alcohol self assessments that you
- 28:43Speaker 1: can take if you go to the Health and Will
- 28:46Speaker 1: being Paige.
- 28:47Speaker 2: And then there are also Safer presentations. I for one,
- 28:50Speaker 2: have attempted safer presentations to be an event monitor for
- 28:55Speaker 2: my sorority functions, so they are actually very informative. I
- 28:59Speaker 2: learned some stuff I even throw into our talk today.
- 29:02Speaker 2: So making sure that you follow the campus health and
- 29:05Speaker 2: Wellbeing Instagram and seeing when those are is always very handy.
- 29:08Speaker 1: They also make them super fun. I've done ones that
- 29:11Speaker 1: are like ca who are just like facts of drinking
- 29:14Speaker 1: and it's purely like informative for you. So they make
- 29:18Speaker 1: it fun, they make it interactive, and it's like it's
- 29:21Speaker 1: less about like shaming you like it. They don't shame
- 29:24Speaker 1: you at all for drinking. They're aware of the college
- 29:26Speaker 1: environment and they're just there to provide the information that
- 29:29Speaker 1: you need to be safe. Another great resource that they
- 29:34Speaker 1: offer through the Health and Wellbeing website is one on
- 29:38Speaker 1: one consultations or presentations, so you can meet with someone
- 29:43Speaker 1: to kind of talk about your experiences, or they can
- 29:46Speaker 1: give you those presentations in person or via zoom and
- 29:50Speaker 1: do it in a one on one setting where it
- 29:52Speaker 1: might feel a little easier to ask any potential questions.
- 29:57Speaker 2: You can also tap into counseling Services and make an
- 30:00Speaker 2: appointment there for free, confidential and brief individual counseling services.
- 30:05Speaker 2: And we already talked about that on how to mental health.
- 30:09Speaker 2: The counseling Services centered, like we absolutely love them and
- 30:13Speaker 2: you should definitely check that out.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and this one specifically will give you like guidance
- 30:18Speaker 1: on reducing or eliminating alcohol or drug use based on
- 30:22Speaker 1: specific goals that you have and just also understanding like academic, emotional,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and personal issues that involve alcohol. So you can definitely
- 30:32Speaker 1: cater these sessions to any specific goal that you have
- 30:36Speaker 1: in mind or issue that you want to address. Obviously,
- 30:39Speaker 1: for the purposes of this episode, that's the focus on alcohol. Well,
- 30:44Speaker 1: that's all the time we have for today. One last
- 30:46Speaker 1: piece of advice, don't rush into drinking if you aren't ready,
- 30:50Speaker 1: and if you are, make sure you are practicing safe
- 30:52Speaker 1: drinking habits. We cannot emphasize this enough.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Cheers to that, Emma, and anyways, we'll be back with
- 30:59Speaker 2: more tips and tricks next time on CP one on
- 31:01Speaker 2: one Learn by listening. You can find us on any
- 31:04Speaker 2: preferred streaming platform for the next episode.
