- 0:00Silver and gold investors, this is nothing to smile about.
- 0:05The prospect of a sudden economic calamity, a sudden
- 0:09gross devaluation in the US dollar.
- 0:13What would that do for silver and gold?
- 0:15Do you think that maybe it might be hard to find silver and gold
- 0:20at your local coin shop? Possibly even at the big online
- 0:24bullion dealers? We cannot rule out a sudden
- 0:29devalued in the US dollar. And the reason why is because if
- 0:34we look at history, it gives us many examples of dominant
- 0:39currencies, paper money that have collapsed.
- 0:43But in this video, we're going to talk about some examples,
- 0:46some reasons why we need to at least consider that it could
- 0:51happen. Look, I'm not telling you we're
- 0:53going to wake up tomorrow and the dollar is going to be
- 0:55worthless. I'm not telling you that it's
- 0:57going to happen next week or next month, but we can't rule
- 1:01out in particular if we broaden the time horizon that we look at
- 1:07that we could be facing at least in a very slow motion fashion,
- 1:11but even possibly a sudden devaluation in the dollar.
- 1:16Hey everybody, it's Ron from Ron's basement live on the log
- 1:20Flume. Say hi girls.
- 1:28Let's apply some common sense to this idea.
- 1:31We do know that right now in our world, what's going on on a
- 1:36worldwide basis, the world is bifurcating.
- 1:40We have the bricks, Brazil, Russia, India, China, South
- 1:44Africa and a number of other countries that are joining them
- 1:48and another, a number of other countries that want to join
- 1:52them. Again, nothing really to smile
- 1:55about for those of us that live in the West, in the United
- 1:57States, because the world is moving away from the dollar.
- 2:05Think about that for a second. Some people call it D
- 2:08dollarization. Whatever you want to call it,
- 2:10the world is moving away from an environment where there's high
- 2:15demand for dollars. Again, no one predicts right on
- 2:19a trade basis or even a reserve basis that this is going to
- 2:23happen overnight. However, there are material
- 2:27movements in that direction. So at minimum that will tell us
- 2:31there will be less demand for U.S. dollars potentially in the
- 2:35future. And when there's less demand for
- 2:37anything that makes the real value, not the nominal made-up
- 2:42Unicorn fart dust, whatever you want to say, a dollar, what no
- 2:45real value of the dollar will go down because of lower demand for
- 2:51dollars. But all of that is happening in
- 2:54what other environment? Come on, let's think about this.
- 2:58It's all happening in an environment where domestically
- 3:01in the United States of America, we are suffering from a debt
- 3:05crisis that nobody, nobody in terms of our leaders is talking
- 3:13about. Sure, you and I'll talk about,
- 3:15sure, you and I know how to operate a calculator.
- 3:18But obviously our politicians in Washington, DC are challenged
- 3:22when it comes to the basic functions of a calculator.
- 3:26Let's run out to the US debt clock because that's what we
- 3:29like to do. And take a quick look at what is
- 3:32going on. As of the recording of this
- 3:34video, we're at almost $36 trillion in national debt.
- 3:39I think it's a safe bet to say that right now, as you're
- 3:42watching this, we are above and maybe even well beyond $36
- 3:48trillion in debt. Guys, we are paying almost a
- 3:51trillion dollars and interest. And when I say guys, I mean guys
- 3:56and gals. I just say guys like whatever,
- 3:58you know, with no, no gender associated with it.
- 4:02Somebody was giving me trouble in some of the comments that I
- 4:05say guys and the the lady female stackers are just as welcome
- 4:10here as the men. And we've got a growing number
- 4:12of lady stackers. I digress.
- 4:15This is a big problem. All these major changes going on
- 4:19in the world. The interest expense is growing,
- 4:22right? The deficit is growing, which
- 4:24makes the debt grow, which makes the interest expense grow.
- 4:27That is a debt spiral. It grows and grows and grows
- 4:31until it truly is a big, major problem.
- 4:36So what we're talking about here, have you ever heard this
- 4:38term called a Minsky moment? That's what we're facing.
- 4:42Let me, let me, let me give you a description of what a Minsky
- 4:46moment is. This.
- 4:47You probably heard the term, but just so you know, a Minsky
- 4:51moment is a sudden major collapse of asset values, which
- 4:56marks the end of the growth phase of a cycle in credit
- 5:00markets or business activity. What we just looked at on the US
- 5:04debt clock is credit markets. OK, 3637 trillion dollars in
- 5:10debt is credit is debt. It's all made-up.
- 5:13OK. The description according to the
- 5:15hypothesis, the rapid instability occurs because long
- 5:21periods of steady prosperity check and investment gains
- 5:26check, check encourage a diminished perception of overall
- 5:31market risk, which promotes the leveraged risk of investing
- 5:37borrowed money instead of cash does not not explain the
- 5:43situation we're in here in the United States.
- 5:46I think they even talk about the origins of this here.
- 5:50The term was coined in 1998 to describe the 1998 Russian
- 5:55financial crisis. They got themselves into a very
- 5:58similar situation as we are in right now and was named after an
- 6:02economist, Hyman Minsky, who noted that bankers, traders and
- 6:07other financiers periodically played the role of arsonist,
- 6:12setting the entire economy ablaze.
- 6:15Minsky opposed the deregulation that characterized the 1980's.
- 6:20The bankers, the investors, the gamblers get out of control.
- 6:24But eventually everybody realizes that, hey, all that
- 6:29paper, all that make believe, all that risk, all that debt,
- 6:32all that leverage is unsustainable.
- 6:35Let's go out and take a look at one of our favorite diagrams of
- 6:38all time, which came from the Federal Reserve.
- 6:41Yes, right. Exter's pyramid.
- 6:43John Exter worked for the Federal Reserve.
- 6:45He only died 20 years ago. Remember, gold and silver at the
- 6:49bottom are the only forms of real money.
- 6:52Everything else on top of that is what we just talked about.
- 6:55Synthetic make believe, you might want to call it Unicorn,
- 6:59fart dust, whatever. It's not real, right?
- 7:02The only forms of real money are gold and silver, and that's why
- 7:06they sit at the base of this inverted triangle.
- 7:10This is what we are facing. And are we getting warnings?
- 7:14Are we getting warnings about this potential?
- 7:17For a Minsky moment, let's just run through a few quick
- 7:21examples. Ray Dalio started Bridgewater
- 7:23Capital, I don't know, the world's biggest hedge fund.
- 7:26He's the smartest, most successful investor maybe in the
- 7:29history of the world. He's warning about the
- 7:32unsustainability of the debt. Jeffrey Gunlock.
- 7:36He what is a double line investing?
- 7:39Another billionaire, another the bond king.
- 7:42He's warning about it. Who else?
- 7:45Stanley Druckenmiller, Right? These are the smartest names.
- 7:48These are the smartest guys. Google them for yourself that
- 7:52you've never heard of, because all that anybody's ever heard of
- 7:55is is Warren Buffett and Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.
- 8:00No, this next level of people, they're the smart ones.
- 8:04We even have Janet Yellen, the head of the Treasury, warning
- 8:07about the unsustainability of the debt.
- 8:09And we even have Gomer Powell, Jerome Powell, we love him
- 8:15himself, who said, well, at some point we're going to have to
- 8:18address the elephant. You see it back there, the
- 8:23elephant in the room, which is the US debt.
- 8:27It really, truly could lead to a Minsky moment.
- 8:30Look, I don't have a crystal ball.
- 8:31Don't make any investment decisions based on anything I'm
- 8:34saying. I'm just a guy in his basement.
- 8:36I don't know anything, right? But if you do decide this, I can
- 8:40tell you it's one thing for sure.
- 8:42You could benefit from considering taking a look at
- 8:46Pinbeck's channel sponsor, Pi MB EX.
