- 0:21Jess: Welcome back to The Pixie Garden Hair Podcast. I'm Jess with Delena Markland. Delena, people always want to know what stylists actually use, not what is sitting in the lobby display. So what is at your station every day?
- 0:34Delena: Two things go on almost every client who sits in my chair. The Hair Finishing Stick and a hair serum. Every head is different, so the rest changes from person to person, but those two are close to constant. And if you made me keep only one, it is the finishing stick.
- 0:51Jess: Why that one over the serum?
- 0:53Delena: Because it handles the thing every client worries about when they leave. The flyaways, the part, the little pieces around the face that pop up an hour later. It is an alcohol-free, water-based gel in a wand, so I put hold exactly where it is needed and nowhere else. The serum makes the hair look smooth and shiny. The stick is what keeps it that way.
- 1:14Jess: How do you use it at the station?
- 1:17Delena: It goes on at the very end. The style is done, the hair is where I want it, then I apply the stick to the spots that need it and leave it alone. That is what people get wrong at home. They put it on and then keep touching it and brushing through it, and they undo it. Apply it, then hands off.
- 1:33Jess: And the serum? Any particular kind?
- 1:36Delena: I am not going to name a brand, because we do not carry one in the shop, and the habit matters more than the label. A little serum for smoothness and shine, then the stick for control. That is the pairing.
- 1:49Jess: Flip side. What do clients bring in that you would never put on them?
- 1:54Delena: Cheap gel with a lot of alcohol in it. It dries the hair out, and it leaves heavy buildup behind. If the bottle was cheap and alcohol is near the top of the ingredients, I am not using it on your hair.
- 2:06Jess: What about dry shampoo? Everyone has a can.
- 2:09Delena: Dry shampoo is where I see the most trouble from misuse. Used properly, it is fine. When you are in a rush, or you want to stretch a style one extra day, it does its job. The one we carry in the shop is the only one I recommend. The problem is using it day after day, for weeks, in place of washing. I have had to wash a client's hair three or four times in one sitting to get the buildup out.
- 2:33Jess: Three or four times?
- 2:35Delena: Three or four. And they usually blame hard water. They come in saying their hair feels heavy and dull and it must be the water at home. It is not the water. It is dry shampoo that never got washed out.
- 2:47Jess: So how do people fix that at home?
- 2:50Delena: You still have to wash your hair properly. Dry shampoo is a bridge, not a replacement. If you have gone past a week on it, exfoliate with the DETOX scalp scrub, the charcoal, peppermint, and tea tree one, and shampoo twice on that first wash. That is what actually gets it out.
- 3:08Jess: Is there anything stylists pay attention to that people at home do not?
- 3:12Delena: The scalp. Buildup lives on the scalp. Product, oil, old dry shampoo. When the scalp is clean, everything I put on the hair works better, in my chair or in your own bathroom.
- 3:24Jess: If someone wants to copy your station, where do they start?
- 3:27Delena: The finishing stick first. Then a serum you like. Everything after that depends on your hair, and that is what a good stylist is for.
- 3:35Jess: Where do people find what you mentioned?
- 3:37Delena: thepixiegarden.com. The Hair Finishing Stick is there, along with the dry shampoo and the DETOX scrub.
- 3:45Jess: All linked on this episode's page with the full written guide. See you Thursday.
