- 0:00Speaker 1: And then I was like, I want to write a
- 0:01Speaker 1: huge parody song from start to finish of New York,
- 0:05Speaker 1: New York about the US Open final.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Beautiful.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Try to write it. Then I'm like struggling because I'm like,
- 0:10Speaker 1: you know, it's like ups and downs, Sinatra sings it.
- 0:13Speaker 1: It's kind of tricky. I get on ChatGPT. I'm like,
- 0:15Speaker 1: can you help me with this, please? ChatGPT takes me
- 0:18Speaker 1: down the darkest tunnel of which way to go. ChatGPT
- 0:22Speaker 1: tells me they're like, maybe you should think of using
- 0:24Speaker 1: another song for your tennis podcast. I was like, shut up, ChatGPT.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Start hitting your serve.
- 0:34Speaker 1: That's pretty good, yeah.
- 0:36Speaker 2: It's landing today.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, it's easy to do. That's the easy part.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Wait till you get to like, when you're trying to
- 0:43Speaker 1: build up to the chorus.
- 0:44Speaker 2: I think you skipped that.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Oh, do you?
- 0:46Speaker 2: I think you just got lost in the weeds. You
- 0:48Speaker 2: just got to.
- 0:48Speaker 1: 12 months. I've got 12 months to work on it
- 0:51Speaker 1: for the next, the next US Open.
- 0:54Speaker 2: If I can break you there, I can break you anywhere.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I won the US Open in New York. New York.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:06Speaker 1: ChatGPT was right. Pick another song.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Show me perfect tennis. Wow.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Oh, no way.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Well, we are here at the end of the Grand
- 1:17Speaker 2: Slam year. The U.S. Open is in the books. And
- 1:22Speaker 2: Rebecca Nutt and Zverev are our new king and queen
- 1:26Speaker 2: of New York.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Of the world? Do they get... Because, you know, in
- 1:28Speaker 1: American sports, often world champion is just whoever wins. You know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: it's the World Series or the.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Of the world.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, the Super Bowl world champion.
- 1:36Speaker 2: The best in the world.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I guess if you win the US Open, you automatically
- 1:39Speaker 1: forget all the other rankings. You are now the best
- 1:42Speaker 1: in the world.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you get it.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah. Finally, an Australian who understands how sports works.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Thank you. But, I mean, you have to say that
- 1:51Speaker 2: Zverev winning two slams this year and Rebecca winning two slams,
- 1:54Speaker 2: they are the biggest successes of the year.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I think we're back in a definitely history. We'll remember
- 2:01Speaker 1: it that way. It's fair if, and maybe we'll get
- 2:03Speaker 1: into it later.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 2:04Speaker 1: He won two slams. You can't deny he won two
- 2:06Speaker 1: slams and you got it. You got to get through it.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You got to do it, but you know, he, It's
- 2:11Speaker 1: not like he got through the two big dogs. It
- 2:14Speaker 1: worked out for him. And you can only play who's
- 2:15Speaker 1: in front of you. True. So he's had the best year.
- 2:19Speaker 1: You can't deny it. But am I going to say
- 2:21Speaker 1: he's the best player?
- 2:23Speaker 2: Well, he might get the number one ranking by the
- 2:26Speaker 2: end of the year. And then you can't argue.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Well, it was even weird just seeing him as the
- 2:30Speaker 1: number one seed in a Grand Slam tournament. I don't know,
- 2:34Speaker 1: the one next to his name. You're like, okay, all right.
- 2:36Speaker 1: You can't deny.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Stats don't lie. So you're a draw truther,
- 2:42Speaker 2: you think, because he didn't face Alcaraz or Sinner in
- 2:46Speaker 2: the two slams that he played. No, no. The two
- 2:49Speaker 2: slams that he won, I should say.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I'm just saying, and maybe this is because I watch
- 2:53Speaker 1: a lot of boxing as well, and I do think
- 2:56Speaker 1: your resume is kind of a body of work of
- 2:58Speaker 1: what you've done, right? And so, you know, I'm not
- 3:02Speaker 1: saying he got a lucky draw. I'm just saying injuries
- 3:03Speaker 1: worked in his favor. And hell, like, absolutely, that's fun.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Take it. And you've still got to beat people. You've
- 3:07Speaker 1: still got to show up. But, like, until he wins, like,
- 3:11Speaker 1: a slam final against one of the two big dogs,
- 3:14Speaker 1: the greats of this era, you're not going to put
- 3:16Speaker 1: him up into that category, are you? I don't want
- 3:19Speaker 1: to rag on him after the best week of his life.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Well, we have Sasha Zverev on the phone from New York.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Start spreading the news. I don't think you're as good
- 3:31Speaker 1: as you do.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Well, so yeah, the US Open is over. I do
- 3:36Speaker 2: get sad at the end of the Grand Slam season,
- 3:38Speaker 2: you know, but it's only a few short months until
- 3:41Speaker 2: the AO kicks off.
- 3:43Speaker 1: It is crazy thinking that because, yeah, like we walked
- 3:45Speaker 1: in here today and I was like, oh, the Slam's done.
- 3:47Speaker 1: And then I'm like, it's already feeling a bit summery
- 3:49Speaker 1: in Australia.
- 3:50Speaker 2: It is.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And I'm like, we're almost there. Before you know it,
- 3:53Speaker 1: you get to Christmas. And then one of the great
- 3:54Speaker 1: joys is that Christmas is done. New Year's, and then
- 3:56Speaker 1: you're like, well, the tennis is around the corner. Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 1: And it's getting longer and longer, the AO. It is.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Before you know it, it's going to start on the 25th.
- 4:04Speaker 1: There'll be some other weird qualifiers coming up.
- 4:06Speaker 2: So on Christmas Day, it kicks off, qualifiers.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I think so, yeah. I think so.
- 4:10Speaker 2: If they open the field more, and they just have
- 4:13Speaker 2: like a thousand people.
- 4:14Speaker 1: You know what Melbourne is like, though? If they just
- 4:18Speaker 1: open the gates and set it up, people in Melbourne
- 4:21Speaker 1: will just come here. People don't even know who... Who's
- 4:25Speaker 1: playing half the time. They're like, we're going to the tennis.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Oh, dude, one point slam starting mid-September for the entire
- 4:31Speaker 2: population of Melbourne.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Dude, I love that idea.
- 4:35Speaker 2: It's not bad.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Why don't we do that for the entirety of Melbourne?
- 4:37Speaker 1: So it's just we line everyone up one by one,
- 4:39Speaker 1: one point slam, winner plays on, big cash prize. We
- 4:43Speaker 1: would probably have to start it before September.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And everyone has to play. It's mandatory.
- 4:47Speaker 1: No, you have to play. It doesn't matter.
- 4:49Speaker 2: You could play a baby.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, of course you could play a baby. You got
- 4:53Speaker 1: to get a bus to a nursing home and just
- 4:55Speaker 1: get them all. They don't know where they're going. They
- 4:57Speaker 1: just get put on a tennis court. Someone hits the
- 5:01Speaker 1: weakest forehand. They don't even chase it.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Speaking of weak forehands, we played pickleball yesterday. No, it
- 5:07Speaker 2: was great. We played with our good friend Aaron Chen,
- 5:10Speaker 2: who was, you might remember from The Dink.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 5:13Speaker 2: He was in the big pickleball movie this year.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And do you know what? The best part is he...
- 5:17Speaker 1: he turned up with his paddle yeah and he's like
- 5:19Speaker 1: i got this from the movie yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 2: He was in he was in the tank with ben
- 5:23Speaker 2: stiller and he had movie branded gear yeah yeah and at.
- 5:27Speaker 1: One point i was talking about andre agassi and chenny's
- 5:29Speaker 1: like yeah i met his coach like he's in another
- 5:31Speaker 1: world now he's in another stratosphere.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I mean we're sitting here with the the top 10
- 5:36Speaker 2: players we're we're in that stratosphere.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yeah but they don't respect us no did you get
- 5:39Speaker 1: a paddle no no.
- 5:40Speaker 2: I didn't get a paddle I got hit by a
- 5:42Speaker 2: ping pong ball in the back by Matt Shelton and
- 5:45Speaker 2: it still stings. Yeah.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I got hit by Pat Rafter, which is worse because
- 5:49Speaker 1: he's so beautiful and friendly that you almost want to
- 5:51Speaker 1: ask him to do it again.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah. I actually think we have to start working out
- 5:55Speaker 2: now just in case we have to get our shirts
- 5:57Speaker 2: off again.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Well, I have been actually for that one reason.
- 5:59Speaker 2: You're going to get ripped for the sting pong?
- 6:01Speaker 1: Yeah, for sting pong. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm doing
- 6:03Speaker 1: high rocks very soon.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Oh, you're going to be the next person.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Doing it on an empty stomach.
- 6:08Speaker 2: You're not going to diarrhea yourself out there.
- 6:11Speaker 1: What sport? So, okay, this is a hypothetical. And so
- 6:15Speaker 1: the lady did high rocks. But she's kind of being
- 6:19Speaker 1: celebrated in some sections of the internet for, like, getting
- 6:21Speaker 1: through it. I'm like, there's very few sporting scenarios where
- 6:26Speaker 1: I could get violent diarrhea and not be like, you
- 6:30Speaker 1: know what? I'm going to step out for a second.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And I think one of the only ones is maybe, like,
- 6:35Speaker 1: maybe if I was in a Grand Slam final. But
- 6:38Speaker 1: even then, there's so many people watching that. Yeah. Or
- 6:41Speaker 1: maybe if it's Grand Slam finals doubles because you don't
- 6:43Speaker 1: want to let your partner down. But even then, your
- 6:45Speaker 1: partner's like, you smell like shit. Is there any sport,
- 6:49Speaker 1: is there any scenario where you, I don't know, you're
- 6:52Speaker 1: a germ freak. Is there any sport or any scenario
- 6:54Speaker 1: where you keep going?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I think if I'm like doing the half pipe
- 6:58Speaker 2: and skateboarding. i want to like launch off the lip
- 7:01Speaker 2: like mid spray.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Just keep going to the abyss like et leaving the
- 7:08Speaker 1: planet i.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Mean that would be sick yeah people remember that forever
- 7:15Speaker 2: oh that would be fantastic can i show you a
- 7:18Speaker 2: pickleball clip that's almost as embarrassing.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah please do yeah what have you got so.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We did we played with uh aaron chen who's in
- 7:24Speaker 2: the dink uh And he, with Oliver Clark, was his
- 7:27Speaker 2: partner who filled in for you last week.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Didn't wear the suit.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Didn't wear the suit, but Ollie's a good player. And
- 7:32Speaker 2: then you did get progressively better as the match went along.
- 7:36Speaker 2: We played best of five sets. They took the first two.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:39Speaker 2: And then we won the next three.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah. You were giving me eyes that, oh, I can
- 7:44Speaker 1: only imagine a reserve for like. close family members when
- 7:48Speaker 1: they do something that you were looking at me like,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you're like, you're embarrassing me. But I lifted and we, and,
- 7:54Speaker 1: and it was incredible to come back. Really.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I did feel bad because at one point you said,
- 7:58Speaker 2: why am I missing like that? And I said, look
- 8:00Speaker 2: where you're standing. Fuckhead.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And I felt, I didn't feel bad.
- 8:04Speaker 1: No, but don't feel bad about that. Do you know
- 8:06Speaker 1: the one that hurt me more was when you said
- 8:08Speaker 1: to me, and I know what this feeling is like,
- 8:10Speaker 1: because often I take people out to play golf that
- 8:12Speaker 1: are getting into it. And I say, you said this
- 8:14Speaker 1: to me, you said, do you want tips or do
- 8:17Speaker 1: you want to just do your own thing? And I
- 8:20Speaker 1: was like, oh, that's what you say to someone. That's like, oh,
- 8:23Speaker 1: I felt dirty. Why? Because I was like, just help me.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Well, I feel like tips can be condescending and some
- 8:30Speaker 2: people take umbrage to tips.
- 8:32Speaker 1: No, but you know me. So I've played a lot
- 8:33Speaker 1: of sport in my life. I want to get better.
- 8:35Speaker 1: I just am so bad with it. And it is
- 8:38Speaker 1: always called positioning. I'm in no man's land. Obviously, it's
- 8:41Speaker 1: not always. There's some, you know, kind of. quite poor
- 8:44Speaker 1: hand-eye coordination issues I'm dealing with as well.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But you're a weapon golfer, so I think it does
- 8:48Speaker 2: translate a little bit.
- 8:49Speaker 1: But as Cheney said to me yesterday, he goes, he goes,
- 8:52Speaker 1: I thought you'd be good because of golf. And he goes,
- 8:53Speaker 1: but then I realized the ball doesn't move in golf.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Chenny was good and but okay let's look at one
- 9:00Speaker 2: of the highlights or low light maybe i should say
- 9:03Speaker 2: from the match sorry to do this to you no
- 9:06Speaker 2: but the the pickleball center sends me the clips this is.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Uh so that's me in the maroon yeah that's not
- 9:11Speaker 1: bad yeah that's a good dig there okay here we
- 9:14Speaker 1: go chenny all.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Right there's you again that's not bad.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Oh and then look at me oh no clark celebrating
- 9:23Speaker 1: and then look at your face i mean your face
- 9:25Speaker 1: in these moments is almost better because you turn to
- 9:27Speaker 1: look at me and.
- 9:28Speaker 2: See, that's good.
- 9:30Speaker 1: It's not like I've got nothing.
- 9:33Speaker 2: But I was just like, oh.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And then look at your face. Your drop was the
- 9:38Speaker 1: best there. You go, oh.
- 9:40Speaker 2: But the fall to the ground. Look at that.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Just a man with nothing left. Also, you know, at
- 9:46Speaker 1: one point, I didn't say I got dizzy. Because I
- 9:49Speaker 1: hadn't drunk enough water that morning. Yeah. And I haven't
- 9:52Speaker 1: been exercising a lot in the last few weeks. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: at one point, I started seeing stars. but i didn't
- 9:56Speaker 1: want to let you down.
- 9:57Speaker 2: You were seeing stars yeah aaron chan.
- 9:59Speaker 1: And michael steen oliver clark at one point as well
- 10:02Speaker 1: i got violent diarrhea as well but i kept going
- 10:04Speaker 1: do you remember that bit.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I mean you sure look like shit out there all
- 10:11Speaker 2: right so let's get into the u.s open uh before
- 10:15Speaker 2: we get into the finals just a few things that
- 10:17Speaker 2: leapt out at me From when we recorded our last episode,
- 10:21Speaker 2: we were two quarterfinal matches in. TFO had just been
- 10:26Speaker 2: beaten Mickelson. And then the rest of the quarterfinals that
- 10:30Speaker 2: day were amazing, dude. They all went to final set
- 10:34Speaker 2: deciders and final set tie breaks and everything but the
- 10:39Speaker 2: Pagoula match. And Shelton versus Alcaraz, probably the match of
- 10:44Speaker 2: the tournament. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I mean, it was exciting. And I mean, it's kind
- 10:47Speaker 1: of like you sort of have to expect that Carlos
- 10:49Speaker 1: is probably not. You think on his day, he gets
- 10:52Speaker 1: it done over Shelton. But I guess he's a bit
- 10:54Speaker 1: not match fit. But it's kind of like I really
- 10:56Speaker 1: like seeing Shelton get through. I think it's cool to
- 10:59Speaker 1: see an American like in America do it, even though,
- 11:01Speaker 1: you know, America is not Australia. But I do like.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I like seeing the Americans get up and get rowdy.
- 11:07Speaker 1: It's a cool thing to see.
- 11:10Speaker 2: It makes the, obviously, vibe in New York, like, through
- 11:14Speaker 2: the roof. And Shelton playing TFO in the semifinal. Like,
- 11:16Speaker 2: they didn't know who to get behind, really.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I mean, Shelton making it to the final, he's going
- 11:21Speaker 1: to remember that. I know he didn't win. There's going
- 11:23Speaker 1: to be, like, a core memory for the rest of
- 11:25Speaker 1: his life. Yeah. It's like when we had Sam Stozek
- 11:27Speaker 1: in here. And she was talking about like everyone in
- 11:30Speaker 1: the crowd wanting her to lose.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Against Serena. Yeah.
- 11:32Speaker 1: It's one of the greatest things I've ever heard. Like
- 11:34Speaker 1: it's insane. She's like, she could feel the anger from
- 11:36Speaker 1: the New York crowd. It's awesome. It's one of the
- 11:38Speaker 1: great things in sports.
- 11:39Speaker 2: It is. So 10-7 in the final set tie break,
- 11:43Speaker 2: Shelton takes out Alcaraz. Alcaraz, yeah, maybe was finally showing
- 11:47Speaker 2: the rust from being five months away from the sport
- 11:51Speaker 2: and just fatigue. I think it comes down to not
- 11:54Speaker 2: a lot of match play. He looked obviously amazing in
- 11:57Speaker 2: the first few rounds. But then Shelton, you know, obviously
- 12:00Speaker 2: had been playing all the lead-up tournaments.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and playing well.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And playing well, winning in Canada. And Alcaraz, amazing. That
- 12:08Speaker 2: first set in this quarterfinal match was probably my favorite
- 12:11Speaker 2: set of tennis this whole tournament between Alcaraz and Shelton.
- 12:15Speaker 2: The next two sets, Alcaraz just started spraying forehands. And
- 12:20Speaker 2: we'll get into why, because Varev has a theory on
- 12:24Speaker 2: how he handled Shelton that Alcaraz hasn't done. Okay. And
- 12:29Speaker 2: TFO didn't do. So we'll get into that when we
- 12:31Speaker 2: get into it.
- 12:31Speaker 1: But don't you think, I think Carlos, like when he
- 12:33Speaker 1: plays these five set epics, I'm not saying he switches off,
- 12:36Speaker 1: but he like, and I know it does happen in
- 12:39Speaker 1: like five set matches, there's flows and momentum, but he
- 12:42Speaker 1: can like, it can go missing for him. And I
- 12:44Speaker 1: think he's such an amazing, that's why he's so exciting
- 12:46Speaker 1: that he can then do amazing things, which, he finds
- 12:49Speaker 1: something deep inside and he can kind of kickstart it.
- 12:51Speaker 1: But obviously there's a bit, a huge lack of match play,
- 12:54Speaker 1: I guess, over the last kind of four or five months. Well,
- 12:57Speaker 1: this is, I'm saying it's not incredibly unique for him
- 13:00Speaker 1: to kind of lose it for a few sets or
- 13:02Speaker 1: a set.
- 13:03Speaker 2: No. And I mean, well, we saw it when we,
- 13:06Speaker 2: he played Zverev.
- 13:07Speaker 1: I mean, perfect example here in Australia.
- 13:09Speaker 2: He had cramps. There was more physical issues going on,
- 13:12Speaker 2: but then he still got through. He's never, I mean,
- 13:14Speaker 2: the only other five set match he's lost in a
- 13:17Speaker 2: grand slam is was to Berrettini in like 2022, I
- 13:22Speaker 2: want to say, 2023.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That's a crazy stat.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah. So this and then now this.
- 13:26Speaker 1: That's a crazy stat.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah, to Shelton. So I think he's going to be
- 13:31Speaker 2: all the better for it. You know, if he keeps playing,
- 13:33Speaker 2: he's going to be back. Alcaraz for the Lever Cup
- 13:35Speaker 2: at the end of the month, which is Team Europe
- 13:37Speaker 2: versus Team World.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Let's go Team World.
- 13:41Speaker 2: So that implies Europe is not part of the world.
- 13:44Speaker 1: They're not to me. I like it. Because in a
- 13:46Speaker 1: lot of sports, it's like America versus the world. Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It's better that it's like we get America.
- 13:50Speaker 2: In a lot of wars, it's America versus the world.
- 13:54Speaker 1: No, I think Australia are kind of jumping. We jump
- 13:56Speaker 1: on board as well, but we don't count. Normal Americans
- 13:59Speaker 1: don't know we're there. No. Kind of the same in sport.
- 14:02Speaker 2: You guys are like the sidecar on a motorcycle, you know?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Oh, that's flattering. I'd say we're like the spare tire
- 14:09Speaker 1: hidden under the... In the back boot of the car.
- 14:13Speaker 1: You're saying Alcaraz will be better for it. Do you
- 14:15Speaker 1: think Shelton is going to be better for this tournament? Yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Or do you think this will be the thing people remember? Like,
- 14:23Speaker 1: I don't know what his ceiling is, right, in terms
- 14:26Speaker 1: of talent and career trajectory. Will this be his moment
- 14:30Speaker 1: that people talk about being like, yeah, that great run
- 14:32Speaker 1: at the US Open in 26? Or is this like
- 14:34Speaker 1: the start of maybe him doing something more?
- 14:36Speaker 2: I think something more. I mean, we'll get to his future.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I guess he'll probably get to world number four. I
- 14:42Speaker 2: think that's confirmed. He's world number four after this run.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And I think he's 23 and all parts of his
- 14:50Speaker 2: game are starting to come together. His backhand was a
- 14:52Speaker 2: weakness people picked on forever. And now it's a shot
- 14:57Speaker 2: that's reliable and consistent. But Zverev played into it in
- 15:03Speaker 2: a high ball, slow play way. That absolutely wrecked him.
- 15:07Speaker 1: So can you explain that further? When you say high ball,
- 15:11Speaker 1: high ball slow?
- 15:12Speaker 2: Slow. So it's like you slow ball your opponent, right?
- 15:15Speaker 2: You're kind of lofting it up. Okay, I might as
- 15:19Speaker 2: well say it now. This is what Zverev said Alcaraz
- 15:23Speaker 2: and TFO got wrong as they hit it with pace
- 15:26Speaker 2: into Shelton's backhand, and then he could absolutely just hit
- 15:29Speaker 2: it back, like absorb that pace, hit it back and redirect.
- 15:34Speaker 2: And then Zverev would just kind of hit slow, consistently
- 15:38Speaker 2: to the backhand, wait for, and when he has to
- 15:41Speaker 2: come over the top of the ball, Shelton, he's not
- 15:44Speaker 2: hitting it back with any pace.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Well, yeah, of course, right? Because then it becomes an
- 15:49Speaker 1: angles game.
- 15:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Whereas if you just rip it into the backcourt, he'll
- 15:53Speaker 1: just stand there and just absolutely clobber it back, right?
- 15:58Speaker 1: And you might lose that because he's so powerful. Yeah.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Which was like exactly, I mean, what Nadal found out
- 16:04Speaker 2: playing Federer.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Is that if you hit it high to his backhand,
- 16:08Speaker 2: he's going to struggle to hit it back with any.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Why would Ferrer say that publicly? I would kind of
- 16:14Speaker 1: keep a lot of these tactics to myself.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Yeah, and it is interesting. Yeah, hold it to yourself
- 16:19Speaker 2: for every time you play them in the future. But, like,
- 16:22Speaker 2: now people are just going to be slowballing.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Because, yeah, one of the great things about tennis is that, like,
- 16:26Speaker 1: you just have these, like, career-long tactics that work against. Like,
- 16:31Speaker 1: you know, there's people that are, like, shouldn't beat someone,
- 16:34Speaker 1: yet for whatever reason they've worked out the other person.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Remember the Agassi? The tongue? Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Yeah, the tongue. I mean, now that is great.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:44Speaker 1: I mean, you don't let the tongue thing get out.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Agassi, yeah, would watch Becker's tongue and go, oh, the
- 16:49Speaker 2: serve's going down the tee.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Becker should have seen the way he
- 16:52Speaker 1: readjusted his wig and been like, okay, he's going to
- 16:54Speaker 1: the corner.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Becker's apparently part lizard.
- 16:57Speaker 1: The tongue is great. His tongue got a fly on
- 17:02Speaker 1: the left side.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Well, we'll get in more detail into the final. But
- 17:07Speaker 1: I find that, that is very interesting though. I find
- 17:09Speaker 1: it interesting that he let it slip as well.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It's a guy who's too excited that he won.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Maybe like just text Alcaraz privately and be like,
- 17:17Speaker 2: Hey man, just stop hitting it with pace.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Just don't do it anyway. You guys crazy competitors.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It's fair if he's too excited. He, what it is,
- 17:25Speaker 1: and I know you said we'll get to it later,
- 17:27Speaker 1: but He's excited that he won. He's had a career
- 17:29Speaker 1: year and he just wants people to know how smart
- 17:31Speaker 1: and clever he is. So he let it slip.
- 17:34Speaker 2: You're flush with the adrenaline of victory. Yeah. Look at
- 17:39Speaker 2: what I did.
- 17:39Speaker 1: It's not pace. It's height and depth.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I feel like when you play fast but flat, he
- 17:46Speaker 2: handles his back in a lot better than when you
- 17:47Speaker 2: play high. The other big thing to come out of
- 17:50Speaker 2: the quarterfinals is Rebecca beating Zhang Qunwen and claiming the
- 17:55Speaker 2: world number one. This is Kind of an odd thing,
- 17:57Speaker 2: you know, mid-tournament, getting world number one, kind of resting
- 18:02Speaker 2: it off Sabalenka, who had been there for 99 weeks.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But is that just like projected? So she won, and
- 18:09Speaker 1: then it's like with the points she'll overtake. It's not
- 18:11Speaker 1: like they're doing live.
- 18:13Speaker 2: No, it's not like immediately.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yeah, of course. It's like post-tournament they do it. But
- 18:17Speaker 1: obviously everyone's already done the math.
- 18:18Speaker 2: But it put her in this weird position that she's, okay,
- 18:21Speaker 2: she'll be world number one regardless of what happens the
- 18:24Speaker 2: rest of the tournament. But then if she goes on
- 18:26Speaker 2: and loses to Sabalenka in the final, then it's like,
- 18:30Speaker 2: it just feels off.
- 18:31Speaker 1: It doesn't feel like, yeah, it's kind of a hollow
- 18:34Speaker 1: world number one kind of moment.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I mean, that is very strange, isn't it? Yeah.
- 18:39Speaker 2: But she absolutely, you know, established.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I think she justified the position. Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:44Speaker 2: And then the semifinals just quickly. Goff and Rebecca was
- 18:48Speaker 2: a killer match. 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 to obviously Rebecca. Those
- 18:53Speaker 2: last couple sets, Rebecca just showed that her power and
- 18:56Speaker 2: pace kind of knocked Goff off her game. Those deep
- 18:59Speaker 2: baseline returns, even though she's playing Goff, who's the best
- 19:03Speaker 2: athlete and quickest feet on tour. Just couldn't get around
- 19:06Speaker 2: enough to kind of get the ball back in an
- 19:09Speaker 2: aggressive way that would keep her in the points. Sabs
- 19:14Speaker 2: and JPEG. That was the other semifinal in the women's.
- 19:19Speaker 2: This is Jess Pagula after the match. She said, I'm
- 19:22Speaker 2: not sure who pissed her off today, Sabalenka, but she
- 19:25Speaker 2: played insane and at a super high level. And then
- 19:29Speaker 2: the journalist reminded Jess Pagula that the last time they played,
- 19:32Speaker 2: Pagula bageled Sabalenka. in the deciding set. And she goes, oh,
- 19:37Speaker 2: I pissed her off.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good stuff.
- 19:41Speaker 2: So no American woman through then after the semifinals. But
- 19:45Speaker 2: I think for real tennis heads, the rivalry at the
- 19:48Speaker 2: moment is Sabalenka, Rebecca.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I think so. And Rabakina has kind of been like,
- 19:53Speaker 1: at least on hard courts, it's kind of like it's
- 19:55Speaker 1: her domain now, which is kind of crazy because the
- 19:59Speaker 1: conversation up until I guess 18 months, 12 months ago
- 20:02Speaker 1: at least was like Sabalenka, you're not going to beat
- 20:05Speaker 1: her on a hard court type situation, power hit her.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And then Rabakina's kind of been like, hang on.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Hang on.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Look at this. Yeah.
- 20:11Speaker 2: So they're head to head now, 10 and 8 in
- 20:14Speaker 2: Sabalenka's favor. But Rabakina's took the two slams this year
- 20:18Speaker 2: against her.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So Rabakina and, wait, Rabakina's world number one has three slams, one, two.
- 20:26Speaker 2: She's won everything but the French.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yeah. So, I mean, it is, I mean, it's a
- 20:30Speaker 1: great kind of conversation now as well. And Sabalenka must
- 20:33Speaker 1: be like, Part of me thinks she must be like,
- 20:37Speaker 1: they were sort of my slams to win. She's in
- 20:40Speaker 1: this peak period of her career, kind of dominating. And yeah, look,
- 20:45Speaker 1: I don't know what's in her brain, but she must
- 20:46Speaker 1: feel like she's let a few slams slip away. Yeah.
- 20:50Speaker 1: that are going to go down on her record that
- 20:52Speaker 1: she really could have won.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I'll get into her Grand Slam record
- 20:56Speaker 2: once we get to the women's semifinal. But just quickly
- 20:59Speaker 2: in the men's semifinals, the StubHub ticket resale outlet that's
- 21:05Speaker 2: huge in America, the Zverev-Kashinov match, tickets were day before
- 21:12Speaker 2: and day of were going for $ 23. 00.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Now that's not good.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And Shelton TFO, $ 330 an hour. Yeah, there you go.
- 21:22Speaker 1: What does that say, Mike, to you?
- 21:24Speaker 2: Americans want to watch Americans.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But also, and I think we've
- 21:29Speaker 1: been saying it for a little bit, that like, The
- 21:32Speaker 1: characters are all on the women's side of tennis at
- 21:34Speaker 1: the moment. I feel like there's bigger names, there's better
- 21:37Speaker 1: storylines at the moment.
- 21:39Speaker 2: More compelling.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Exactly, right? There's no way that 15 years ago, I
- 21:44Speaker 1: feel like you get to a men's semifinal, I'd feel
- 21:45Speaker 1: like people would be giving everything they have to go
- 21:48Speaker 1: regardless of who's playing. Obviously, if there's an American, things
- 21:52Speaker 1: are different. But still, pretty cool to go to a
- 21:55Speaker 1: Semi-final of a Grand Slam.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I also think, too, your average American casual sports watcher,
- 22:00Speaker 2: Zverev and Kashinov are two guys they've probably never heard of.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Or just like, well, we don't know.
- 22:05Speaker 1: So, okay, this is a good question. Does Zverev have
- 22:09Speaker 1: the lowest profile of any two-time Grand Slam? Okay, in
- 22:15Speaker 1: a year, he's won two Grand Slams, right? That's crazy.
- 22:17Speaker 1: He's won two Grand Slams. Does he have the lowest
- 22:20Speaker 1: household profile of any tennis player in recent memories?
- 22:23Speaker 2: So in terms of a guy who's winning slams.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Winning slams, making finals of slams as well. Yeah.
- 22:28Speaker 2: He's up there. I mean, maybe like Varinka outside of
- 22:33Speaker 2: tennis heads is like people are like, oh.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Yeah. He hasn't got crossover appeal in any way. Yeah.
- 22:40Speaker 2: So, of course, Alexander Zverev beating Kashinov in that final.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And two things with both guys' names. We'll do Zverev first.
- 22:51Speaker 2: If your name is Alexander and you're Russian or German,
- 22:54Speaker 2: like Sasha is your nickname. Yes. I don't totally understand why, but,
- 22:58Speaker 2: you know, Alexander Bublik is also known as Sasha Bublik. Yep.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Alexander Zverev, Sasha Zverev.
- 23:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and we don't got to look that up why
- 23:05Speaker 1: that is.
- 23:06Speaker 2: No. Why would we? Why would we do the bare
- 23:10Speaker 2: minimum of research at work? So one of the journos,
- 23:16Speaker 2: I guess, for the U.S. Open kind of got the
- 23:19Speaker 2: pronunciation wrong.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Oh, fantastic.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Sausage Varev.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Sausage Varev is.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Making me hungry. It does, mate.
- 23:34Speaker 1: It sounds good. I would buy it from the butcher.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Sausage Vera. Look, I have some sympathy for that lady. Like,
- 23:41Speaker 1: who was it? I remember talking to a former TV
- 23:45Speaker 1: sports reporter that does all sports and they would say
- 23:48Speaker 1: when it's like peak tennis time and they're going through
- 23:50Speaker 1: all the names, it can be difficult. Yeah. And you
- 23:53Speaker 1: just try your best and you don't check your DMs.
- 23:56Speaker 1: That's what you've got to do. But sausage... Sausage is like...
- 24:02Speaker 1: Sausage is wrong. We all know sausage is wrong.
- 24:04Speaker 2: Sausage is wrong. And how did the other people on
- 24:07Speaker 2: that desk not go, did you say sausage?
- 24:09Speaker 1: Did you say sausage? Did you say sausage?
- 24:12Speaker 2: I would absolutely call it out.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Do you reckon she knew she said sausage or she's
- 24:16Speaker 1: completely oblivious to it? Or she's such a pro that
- 24:19Speaker 1: she said sausage and is like, no one's going to
- 24:21Speaker 1: pick that up. Yeah. If I say it confidently, people
- 24:24Speaker 1: will be like, well, maybe they call him sausage.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Maybe at least he's tall, he's skinny, he's a bit sausagey.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And the thing is, I think she was trying to
- 24:33Speaker 2: be more in the know by saying the Sasha, you know,
- 24:36Speaker 2: like as I said.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah, totally, yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Instead of just Alex or, you know, or just Zverev.
- 24:40Speaker 2: We're accustomed to calling tennis players just by their last names.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Of course.
- 24:44Speaker 2: But her just trying to be like, oh, yeah, Sausage Zverev.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:49Speaker 2: But we are absolutely calling him Sausage from here on out.
- 24:52Speaker 1: I'm going to call him Chorizo. Ooh. That's more exciting.
- 24:58Speaker 2: It is.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Yeah. Anyway, but the sauce, man. We'll call him Snag.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Snag.
- 25:02Speaker 1: How deep could it go?
- 25:03Speaker 2: Snag works.
- 25:04Speaker 1: The Snag.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Nduja.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Nduja?
- 25:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Isn't that a sausage? It's Nduja, not Nduja. I
- 25:11Speaker 2: think it is.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Nduja?
- 25:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:12Speaker 1: What sort of sausage is it?
- 25:14Speaker 2: It's a bit tritzo-y. It's in the tritzo world. And
- 25:17Speaker 2: it's from Italy.
- 25:18Speaker 1: If we get him.
- 25:18Speaker 2: We'll call him Bunnings.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Oh, that's actually good. Well, if we get him in
- 25:22Speaker 1: during the AO, we should actually get him to cook
- 25:24Speaker 1: some sausages.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And if we get him in for an interview, we
- 25:28Speaker 2: call him Sausage until he corrects us. Yeah.
- 25:31Speaker 1: But we won't even say last name.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:32Speaker 1: So we'll just say Sausage. Sausage! But you know what?
- 25:38Speaker 1: I mean, you actually probably, of all people, would understand
- 25:40Speaker 1: this more. It's like the Australian accent is kind of
- 25:43Speaker 1: like Australians think everyone can kind of understand what they're saying.
- 25:46Speaker 1: But a lot of people, even English speakers, can't understand.
- 25:49Speaker 1: If English is your second language, I think you'd be
- 25:51Speaker 1: too polite to correct us for a long period of time.
- 25:55Speaker 1: It's probably until we... So I reckon we could get
- 25:57Speaker 1: through 10 minutes of calling him sausage. It's probably not
- 25:59Speaker 1: until we reveal the barbecue and hand him a sausage.
- 26:02Speaker 1: That he goes, by the way, my name is not Sausage.
- 26:05Speaker 2: The sausage has a little headband on it. Like an
- 26:08Speaker 2: Adidas logo charred into the side. And we're like, hey, Sausage.
- 26:13Speaker 1: That's when he might go, hey, guys, come on.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I know. I could see his manager or whoever his
- 26:17Speaker 2: handler is just fuming.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Hating it.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Guys, that was weird. Can we lose that?
- 26:22Speaker 1: Lose the sausage.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Lose the sausage thing.
- 26:24Speaker 1: It's not funny. It's not cool.
- 26:26Speaker 2: It's disrespectful.
- 26:26Speaker 1: It's not lame.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Guys.
- 26:28Speaker 1: He's got a wife.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Sausage has a wife. And then my other favorite thing
- 26:39Speaker 2: with who he was playing, Karen Kashinov. This is absolute disrespect.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Kashinov having to field this question for Magerno a few
- 26:49Speaker 2: years back.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Why do you got a girl's name?
- 26:52Speaker 2: It's not a girl's name. It's Armenian name.
- 26:57Speaker 1: It's truly one of the most disrespectful things I've ever seen.
- 27:04Speaker 2: It's like being in school. It's absolutely how he responded.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Because in school, he would have had bullies and whatever.
- 27:12Speaker 1: It's like he's prepped. He's so prepped to answer that question.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Well, he went to some tough Russian school, I'm sure.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And people are like, why do you got a girl's name?
- 27:19Speaker 2: And he's like, it's not a girl's name. It's an
- 27:21Speaker 2: Armenian name.
- 27:24Speaker 1: He almost should have just like punched the journalist in
- 27:26Speaker 1: the face or something. Who's the journalist? It's one of
- 27:29Speaker 1: the great questions I've ever seen. It rules. Especially in
- 27:31Speaker 1: like modern sport, sexuality is fluid. Like there's so many
- 27:35Speaker 1: parts that that could go down. He's lucky that he
- 27:38Speaker 1: got like kind of an Eastern European guy with a
- 27:40Speaker 1: bit of like, like bite to him. He's like, it's
- 27:42Speaker 1: not a girl's name.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Man. I was walking around my apartment like for days
- 27:46Speaker 2: after that, just to myself going, it's not the girl's name.
- 27:49Speaker 2: It's Armenian name.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah. It's actually perfect. Could you play that again, please?
- 27:55Speaker 1: Why have you got a girl's name? It's not a
- 27:59Speaker 1: girl's name.
- 28:00Speaker 2: It's an Armenian name.
- 28:05Speaker 1: It's real Alan Partridge, accidental Partridge.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Well, but it's also antagonistic, obviously.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Dude, it's the craziest question ever. In a press conference,
- 28:15Speaker 1: like I would do it maybe if we'd gone out
- 28:17Speaker 1: and had 15 drinks together. I'd be like, hey, by
- 28:20Speaker 1: the way, you've got a girl's name. It's pretty funny.
- 28:22Speaker 2: Karen, especially because now it's a cliche. You're a Karen. Totally. Yeah.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Is that what the journalist was potentially trying to do?
- 28:29Speaker 1: Because otherwise I don't understand what. We're talking about a journalist.
- 28:33Speaker 1: This guy uses words for his job. And he's like,
- 28:37Speaker 1: why have you got a girl's name? He knows the answer.
- 28:41Speaker 1: He knows that it's a context thing from language to language.
- 28:44Speaker 1: What did he want out of that?
- 28:46Speaker 2: I have no idea. But I just love it. The
- 28:49Speaker 2: timing of it is perfect. He's clearly had to say
- 28:53Speaker 2: that so many times in his life. It's not a
- 28:55Speaker 2: girl's name. It's an Armenian name.
- 28:56Speaker 1: It's a very beautiful Armenian name.
- 28:58Speaker 2: So that semifinal, Zverev and Kashinov. Obviously, Zverev taking it
- 29:02Speaker 2: out in straight sets. And if you like cross-court backhand battles,
- 29:07Speaker 2: this was the match for you. Both guys allergic to
- 29:10Speaker 2: coming into the net. But, I mean, two of the
- 29:13Speaker 2: strongest backhands on tour. Kashinov had some chances, but he
- 29:18Speaker 2: was up on Zverev 5-3 in the second set. And
- 29:22Speaker 2: he was up 6-4 in the third set tiebreak, but
- 29:25Speaker 2: Zverev still took it out in straights. Leaning towards the focus,
- 29:28Speaker 2: Varev brought into the final, which we'll get into shortly,
- 29:31Speaker 2: but Shelton TFO. This was a four-setter, obviously won by Shelton,
- 29:37Speaker 2: and not a ton to report here. This one kind
- 29:41Speaker 2: of annoyed me that Shelton hit 158 mph serve recorded
- 29:45Speaker 2: on the radar. What's that? 250.
- 29:49Speaker 1: I think he started. It doesn't know.
- 29:52Speaker 2: The miles. 254 kilometers.
- 29:53Speaker 1: That's like one of the most annoying parts of watching
- 29:55Speaker 1: like tennis in that, like in America.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:58Speaker 1: It's seeing the miles. Like, God, I'm like, can we
- 30:00Speaker 1: all just get on this? Jesus Christ.
- 30:03Speaker 2: 254 kilometers an hour, something like that?
- 30:05Speaker 1: Because it means nothing to me, Miles.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:08Speaker 1: They could have put a billion up there. I'm like,
- 30:10Speaker 1: I don't know what it means.
- 30:10Speaker 2: I mean, a billion would look excessive.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Well, it would look good. You'd be like, hell of
- 30:14Speaker 1: a serve.
- 30:15Speaker 2: The ball would go through the other player. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 1: We'd kill a spectator. The ball probably wouldn't come out
- 30:22Speaker 1: very well. No, but do you know what I mean?
- 30:24Speaker 1: So how fast is that?
- 30:26Speaker 2: 153, 240?
- 30:26Speaker 1: 158 miles per.
- 30:27Speaker 2: Hour, 254. 254. Yeah, so they were going, this is
- 30:32Speaker 2: the fastest serve in U.S. sub-bundant history hit by Shelton.
- 30:36Speaker 2: TFO got it back barely, but it was a floater,
- 30:39Speaker 2: then Shelton just put away the next ball. But then
- 30:42Speaker 2: the tournament retracted, The reading of the radar that was up,
- 30:48Speaker 2: and they go, upon further review, it was actually 144
- 30:52Speaker 2: miles per hour.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, that sucks.
- 30:54Speaker 2: What is that?
- 30:54Speaker 1: Don't do that.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Is anything real?
- 30:56Speaker 1: What, if we can't trust the speed radar in a
- 30:59Speaker 1: Grand Slam, what are we even doing here?
- 31:02Speaker 2: Right?
- 31:03Speaker 1: I mean, it is a big, it's good. It's also
- 31:05Speaker 1: not like they got it wrong by a mile or
- 31:08Speaker 1: a kilometer, if you live in the real world. Like,
- 31:11Speaker 1: that's quite, what, 10, it's almost 10 kilometers they got
- 31:14Speaker 1: it wrong by.
- 31:14Speaker 2: Yeah. 10 miles, sorry.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a huge mistake. Why wouldn't they just keep
- 31:18Speaker 1: their mouth shut?
- 31:19Speaker 2: That's what I thought. Because then it goes on as
- 31:21Speaker 2: officially the fastest in US Open history.
- 31:23Speaker 1: But who cares? No one, the eye test, no one's
- 31:26Speaker 1: going to be like, didn't look too.
- 31:29Speaker 2: Exactly. The third and fourth set was amazing electric tennis
- 31:35Speaker 2: between two guys who've obviously played each other many a time.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Shelton's backhand was looking way better but then maybe it
- 31:43Speaker 2: was the pace thing TFO was hitting with speed into
- 31:47Speaker 2: the Shelton backhand And then the match ended on a
- 31:51Speaker 2: TFO double fault, which it deserved better than that.
- 31:53Speaker 1: That sucks.
- 31:54Speaker 2: Yes. But shall we get into the finals proper? Sausage.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Sausage. Sausage.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Buttered sausage.
- 32:04Speaker 1: All right.
- 32:05Speaker 2: So the women's finals, Rebecca Sabalenka, like I said, the
- 32:10Speaker 2: head-to-head is now 10-8. Uh, Rebecca, no winning this in
- 32:14Speaker 2: the third set, six to not a lot of rallies
- 32:17Speaker 2: in this Rebecca hitting clean as she had all tournament, uh,
- 32:22Speaker 2: just looked like the world. Number one deserves the mantle
- 32:25Speaker 2: of the world. Number one and winning this tournament, uh,
- 32:29Speaker 2: in the second set, Sabaliga had two set points against
- 32:32Speaker 2: Rebecca and a serve and at five, four Rebecca and
- 32:35Speaker 2: a served her way out of it. And then in
- 32:38Speaker 2: the third set. Rabakina, of course, ran away with it 6-2.
- 32:43Speaker 2: I was kind of surprised Sabalenka even jagged that second set.
- 32:48Speaker 2: I thought.
- 32:49Speaker 1: You thought she was going to lay over.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Well, no, I just thought it was just going to
- 32:52Speaker 2: be straights for Rabakina.
- 32:54Speaker 1: But is that because of how well Rabakina's playing or
- 32:57Speaker 1: because of this continuation of Sabalenka kind of Not doing
- 33:03Speaker 1: as well as she has been previously in big final.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Look, if you told me at the start of the year,
- 33:07Speaker 2: Sabalenka wouldn't be winning a slam, I would find that amazing.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Because I think that would have been the first year
- 33:13Speaker 2: since 2022 where Sabalenka doesn't take a slam. And yeah, surprising,
- 33:19Speaker 2: especially with Rebecca coming into the tournament with a seeming
- 33:23Speaker 2: Injury to her foot. Hadn't played. She said she hadn't
- 33:27Speaker 2: picked up a tennis racket for six days prior to
- 33:30Speaker 2: the US Open.
- 33:30Speaker 1: That was similar to me actually as well.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Yeah. When you played the US Open?
- 33:34Speaker 1: When I played, no, just this current US Open. Yeah,
- 33:37Speaker 1: I didn't touch a tennis racket for six days beforehand.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Oh, really? Yeah.
- 33:39Speaker 1: She did better than me, obviously.
- 33:41Speaker 2: And for the two weeks during.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Two weeks during. No, no, I did. Don't you worry.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Did you?
- 33:45Speaker 1: I cleaned out the garage at one point. Yeah, so
- 33:47Speaker 1: I had to pick one up, hit a few balls
- 33:48Speaker 1: against the brick wall. But I think it is, I
- 33:51Speaker 1: think it's a good point that you were surprised that
- 33:52Speaker 1: she took the second because you could just see it
- 33:55Speaker 1: going out in straight sets and then obviously the last set,
- 33:57Speaker 1: I don't know, it just feels like, I think there's
- 34:00Speaker 1: like a mental block there maybe for Sabalenka. Taking nothing
- 34:03Speaker 1: away from Rebecca now. But like, I don't know. It's
- 34:05Speaker 1: like you would be thinking about it. Just being like, God,
- 34:08Speaker 1: am I going to lose another slam final?
- 34:10Speaker 2: And she did. See, the thing is they go, does
- 34:13Speaker 2: Sabalenka have a grand final plan? Like, is it.
- 34:18Speaker 1: If we have Australian listeners, is she the Sydney Swans
- 34:21Speaker 1: who have lost their last ball they've gone to?
- 34:23Speaker 2: Or American listeners, the Buffalo Bills.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Ah, the Bills. The Bills. The Bills. But the Bills
- 34:28Speaker 1: of the late 80s, 90s, they were a great team.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Great team.
- 34:33Speaker 1: But that culture, it's now lost. And maybe it's been
- 34:35Speaker 1: transferred to Tabalenco.
- 34:37Speaker 2: But the Bills, four Super Bowls in a row. Sorry
- 34:39Speaker 2: to deviate too much.
- 34:40Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 34:40Speaker 2: But it does inform this, that they get flack for
- 34:44Speaker 2: making four Super Bowls And losing, but they also made
- 34:48Speaker 2: four Super Bowls. Yeah, I know.
- 34:49Speaker 1: But this is one of the great moments. I think
- 34:51Speaker 1: it's one of the great kind of dichotomies in sport, right?
- 34:54Speaker 1: Because people sometimes remember second place if they're real bad.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Not real bad, but if like they've run towards second
- 35:01Speaker 1: place is kind of memorable and they do great. But
- 35:04Speaker 1: if you're like a really good player, second place is
- 35:08Speaker 1: simply not good enough and you get no credit. for
- 35:11Speaker 1: getting there, which is so unfair because it is so
- 35:14Speaker 1: hard to not have an off day. I mean, it's
- 35:17Speaker 1: arguably harder in tennis than it is in football because football,
- 35:20Speaker 1: you can have a few losses and bounce back. But
- 35:22Speaker 1: like tennis, you've just got to show up. You can't lose.
- 35:24Speaker 1: You've just got to keep going. And the South Atlantic
- 35:26Speaker 1: is getting no credit. Everyone's like, what a bad year.
- 35:30Speaker 1: She's made slam finals and she just hasn't kind of
- 35:32Speaker 1: got it done in the final. And she'll feel that
- 35:35Speaker 1: it's a bad year as well.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, definitely. I mean, well, the thing is with
- 35:39Speaker 2: the ranking points is kind of like goes to what
- 35:42Speaker 2: you're saying is that you have to keep playing to
- 35:45Speaker 2: stay in the conversation, like win or lose. You're defending
- 35:49Speaker 2: ranking points. You're going for ranking points. I heard someone
- 35:52Speaker 2: put the point system in tennis the best way is
- 35:55Speaker 2: that you're trying to climb a staircase and the stairs
- 35:58Speaker 2: are disappearing behind you.
- 35:59Speaker 1: It's like that. What's that thing to work on your
- 36:01Speaker 1: ass at the gym? You know, the thing that goes up.
- 36:04Speaker 1: What's it called, Errol? You've got a bit of a booty. Yeah,
- 36:07Speaker 1: the step machine. That's the world ranking system. Big time.
- 36:10Speaker 1: You're on there. You've got to keep chasing.
- 36:12Speaker 2: I mean, I was alluding to a good metaphor, and
- 36:15Speaker 2: then you talked about working on your ass at the gym.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I want to get a bit more of a booty.
- 36:20Speaker 1: So it's kind of always at the forefront of my brain.
- 36:24Speaker 2: So Sabalenka now in Grand Slam finals is four and five.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Yeah, just the wrong side of the ledger. I mean,
- 36:34Speaker 1: she's got time to bounce back. Well, I guess this
- 36:38Speaker 1: is one of the great things about her is that
- 36:40Speaker 1: she takes losing well.
- 36:42Speaker 2: That plate is kind of just chucked down and then the.
- 36:46Speaker 1: Love this. Oh, look at that. They're going to have
- 36:50Speaker 1: to redo the floor.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Let it out. I think they must know there's cameras
- 36:54Speaker 2: back there. I mean, I don't think it's performative, really,
- 36:56Speaker 2: but she's just, I mean, we've seen this with other players, like,
- 37:00Speaker 2: go to the locker room backstage, whatever you want to
- 37:03Speaker 2: call it.
- 37:04Speaker 1: Backstage?
- 37:05Speaker 2: It is a backstage.
- 37:06Speaker 1: It's not backstage. It's the locker room.
- 37:08Speaker 2: It's a green room.
- 37:09Speaker 1: It's like the gym thing, the warm-up area. It's not
- 37:11Speaker 1: the green room. There's not a little shitty bar fridge with, like,
- 37:14Speaker 1: warm beers in there.
- 37:15Speaker 2: There's that water bottle that you can only get at
- 37:17Speaker 2: the Comedy Store. What is that water?
- 37:21Speaker 1: That's a deep cut. If you've ever been to any
- 37:22Speaker 1: century-run venues and asked for a bottle of water before,
- 37:25Speaker 1: what is that brand of water?
- 37:27Speaker 2: You'll never see that anywhere on the planet.
- 37:29Speaker 1: It's fallen off a truck multiple times.
- 37:32Speaker 2: So I looked at other players with a losing Grand
- 37:36Speaker 2: Slam record. Yvonne Lendl was 8-11. 8-11. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:40Speaker 1: I mean, it's pretty similar, I guess. But that's the problem.
- 37:44Speaker 1: You don't get the credit for getting there. Yeah. Like,
- 37:47Speaker 1: I mean, Sabalanka has made nine Grand Slam finals. That's
- 37:50Speaker 1: an incredible effort.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:51Speaker 1: But yeah, you kind of, you've got to be on
- 37:53Speaker 1: the winning side of it. I know.
- 37:55Speaker 2: And so.
- 37:55Speaker 1: And she would be, as much as we're talking about it, Like,
- 37:58Speaker 1: imagine how much more she's thinking about it. Oh, yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 2: I mean, well, so Rebecca is now. So Yvonne Lendl,
- 38:04Speaker 2: the guy that was beating him in a lot of
- 38:06Speaker 2: those slam finals was Boris Becker. Obviously, Agassi didn't tell him.
- 38:09Speaker 1: The tongue thing. Of course, you keep the tongue thing
- 38:12Speaker 1: to yourself.
- 38:12Speaker 2: You keep it quiet until you write a book 20
- 38:14Speaker 2: years later. So Rebecca is now the Boris Becker to Sabalenga,
- 38:19Speaker 2: stopping her from winning these finals. And then now the
- 38:23Speaker 2: conversation following the match, Sabalenka's obviously smashing rackets. She told
- 38:29Speaker 2: the cameraman to fuck off. I think it's fine.
- 38:33Speaker 1: I like it. Yeah.
- 38:34Speaker 2: I think you just lost one of the biggest... Yeah,
- 38:38Speaker 2: there she is.
- 38:40Speaker 1: Also, there is some criticism getting thrown at her for
- 38:43Speaker 1: being a bad loser or showing the emotion. She cried
- 38:46Speaker 1: at the A.O. under the towel, seeing the towel, like the,
- 38:49Speaker 1: you know, sobbing face and just going up and down.
- 38:51Speaker 1: It kind of, I thought it was great vision. Yeah.
- 38:54Speaker 1: But like, I mean, it's almost like, what do you
- 38:56Speaker 1: want from her? Everyone, she either gets criticized from, I
- 38:59Speaker 1: had to criticize her as well from being like, she's
- 39:01Speaker 1: too into TikTok. She's making her things. It's like she cares.
- 39:05Speaker 1: She's smashing rackets. She's getting upset, more visibly upset. If
- 39:09Speaker 1: she was just losing the finals and being like, it's
- 39:12Speaker 1: good to be here the next day, blah, blah, blah.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Back to social media, you'd be like, well, maybe her
- 39:15Speaker 1: heart's not in it. I think she cares.
- 39:17Speaker 2: She cares.
- 39:18Speaker 1: She cares more than anyone. She's as competitive as anyone
- 39:22Speaker 1: out there.
- 39:22Speaker 2: Yeah. And also... I think as long as you show
- 39:26Speaker 2: good sportsmanship towards the player who won, which he absolutely did.
- 39:30Speaker 2: I thought the handshake and hug at the net were fine.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I thought her speech after she was overcome with emotion.
- 39:38Speaker 2: So it cuts to her, because Rebecca not being the
- 39:41Speaker 2: most effusive of players, when she won, she just kind
- 39:45Speaker 2: of quickly, yeah. I think that's fine. I mean, you know,
- 39:48Speaker 2: there's not a lot to read. I don't think it
- 39:50Speaker 2: was too salty. I think, yeah, she gave Rebecca her dues.
- 39:54Speaker 1: Well, what could she have... Okay, as you say that,
- 39:57Speaker 1: she's just smashing her racket.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Look, I think you're right. I don't think she's disrespectful.
- 40:02Speaker 1: And tennis does have these traditions, so people are probably
- 40:04Speaker 1: going to judge it harder than... Yeah. Then maybe if
- 40:07Speaker 1: you lose a Super Bowl or maybe a grand final
- 40:11Speaker 1: in football or the World Cup, it's like you can,
- 40:14Speaker 1: I don't know, be more salty. Whereas in tennis, you're
- 40:16Speaker 1: supposed to be very, it's that old school gentleman. Individualistic.
- 40:19Speaker 2: Yes.
- 40:20Speaker 1: And like you shake hands and you're like, well, sport
- 40:22Speaker 1: is the real winner or whatever it is. But it's
- 40:25Speaker 1: also like it's big business and she wants to, she's
- 40:27Speaker 1: upset that she lost. And it is still, it's still
- 40:30Speaker 1: box office if you ask me. She wasn't, she wasn't
- 40:32Speaker 1: offensive to Rabakina. She shook her hand, gave her a hug,
- 40:36Speaker 1: smashed the racket. You get the best of both worlds, really. Yeah.
- 40:40Speaker 2: And, I mean, it's a bizarre thing in tennis that
- 40:43Speaker 2: you've got to give speeches if you lose afterwards.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Yeah, it's great.
- 40:47Speaker 2: And then also now this handing the check over on
- 40:51Speaker 2: the stage in front.
- 40:52Speaker 1: Of the losing player. I don't like this, by the way.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Do we have this picture? This is Rebecca holding the
- 40:57Speaker 2: $ 5. 5 million check in front of Sabalenka, who's standing behind
- 41:02Speaker 2: her with.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I don't like it. I mean. Look at it. It's
- 41:06Speaker 1: so soft. Also, it's like the optics of it is
- 41:10Speaker 1: like you get a plate, which you're like, what am I?
- 41:12Speaker 1: I guess she has a trophy cabinet. But at the time,
- 41:14Speaker 1: it's like, I don't want to hold a plate.
- 41:16Speaker 2: I mean, you're putting your keys on that plate when
- 41:19Speaker 2: you get home.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Exactly. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It'd be some kind of weird.
- 41:22Speaker 1: It's like you're not eating off it. That's for sure.
- 41:24Speaker 1: It's really just kind of a weird plate you have.
- 41:26Speaker 2: That's on the credenza when you. Open your door to
- 41:29Speaker 2: get home and you throw the keys on there.
- 41:30Speaker 1: You throw it on there and you just then dive
- 41:33Speaker 1: onto the couch.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Maybe there's some mints.
- 41:35Speaker 1: Some mints. But also, can I say, I don't like...
- 41:38Speaker 1: Are we past the novelty check? Do you know what
- 41:40Speaker 1: I mean? Whatever happened to the huge novelty check?
- 41:43Speaker 2: You don't like a regular size check?
- 41:44Speaker 1: I don't like a normal, like an envelope with like...
- 41:47Speaker 1: Like someone's like you've done, like you've mowed the neighbor's
- 41:50Speaker 1: lawn when you're 13 and they hand you, give me
- 41:52Speaker 1: a big novelty check. And then they've written in text
- 41:54Speaker 1: to the price on it or something. Like you've just
- 41:56Speaker 1: won big.
- 41:57Speaker 2: True.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Like you've won a holiday on sunrise or something.
- 41:59Speaker 2: What was that tournament earlier on where they brought a
- 42:03Speaker 2: massive phone instead of a novelty check out to the court?
- 42:07Speaker 1: And then they No I can get around that And
- 42:10Speaker 1: they showed What the live transfer They showed him.
- 42:12Speaker 2: The bank transfer The money into the player's account.
- 42:15Speaker 1: That's so funny But that's like Who is the The
- 42:18Speaker 1: player's like Running by the mafia It's like I'm not
- 42:20Speaker 1: leaving the course Till the money's in my bank account
- 42:22Speaker 1: Yeah let me see it Yeah yeah yeah I got
- 42:23Speaker 1: a check I don't like the little check I like
- 42:26Speaker 1: big checks I actually like the transfer Much more Yeah
- 42:29Speaker 1: But also the money thing is Can I say The
- 42:32Speaker 1: money thing is Untennis To me Yes I know money
- 42:35Speaker 1: is a big part of tennis And You know, equal
- 42:37Speaker 1: pay parity has been a huge talking point. It's great
- 42:39Speaker 1: that the women make as much as men. But do
- 42:41Speaker 1: we have to bring the check out? Everyone knows that
- 42:44Speaker 1: they're rich. Can we just not be like, they won
- 42:47Speaker 1: the tournament.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Awesome.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Do that discreetly.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:50Speaker 1: Is anyone being like, I need to see them get
- 42:52Speaker 1: another $ 5 million. I make $ 70, 000 a year and it
- 42:56Speaker 1: would only make me happy knowing that they've got another
- 42:58Speaker 1: $ 5 million in their sweet little hand or bank account
- 43:02Speaker 1: right now.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Even the person who had to get the check and
- 43:04Speaker 2: put it in the envelope.
- 43:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:06Speaker 2: They're getting paid $ 25 on a casual rate. So, Rebecca
- 43:12Speaker 2: is the US Open Championship. I think she eventually gets
- 43:16Speaker 2: the calendar slam and takes out the French.
- 43:18Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Which, you know, is a huge rarity. And I think she... Actually,
- 43:24Speaker 2: there was this... Because weird to think that Sinner doesn't
- 43:28Speaker 2: have the calendar slam yet, right?
- 43:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:32Speaker 2: And there are a few players that you wouldn't expect
- 43:35Speaker 2: don't have the calendar slam. Shavontech needs the AO. Rebecca,
- 43:41Speaker 2: as we said, needs the French. Sinner needs the French.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Sabalenka still needs the French and Wimbledon. And Goff hasn't
- 43:48Speaker 2: won the AO or Wimbledon. So I think out of
- 43:52Speaker 2: all those players, it's clearly Sinner who takes a calendar
- 43:55Speaker 2: slam first.
- 43:56Speaker 1: He's also got time on his hand. And I think
- 43:59Speaker 1: if you look at levels, he's clearly... If he can
- 44:02Speaker 1: get a good run and maybe, you know, it's a
- 44:05Speaker 1: kind of a cooler European summer. Yeah. I feel like
- 44:07Speaker 1: he'll do it pretty easy.
- 44:09Speaker 2: I think so.
- 44:09Speaker 1: Not easy, obviously, but like, I think he's got a
- 44:11Speaker 1: great shot at it.
- 44:11Speaker 2: Yeah. So I think he and Rebecca are next on
- 44:15Speaker 2: the calendar slam list, unless Shvantec.
- 44:18Speaker 1: I like Shvantec.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Taking the AO. I like that.
- 44:20Speaker 1: That's a great, she's coming into a bit of form.
- 44:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Bit of an off season.
- 44:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:24Speaker 1: I'll get behind it.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Talk about buttered sausage, where it comes from, what it does.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Why is it doing what it's doing?
- 44:30Speaker 1: Get it out of my face.
- 44:31Speaker 2: In the Zverev vs. Shelton men's final, looks like Andy
- 44:37Speaker 2: Roddick will hold his title as the only American man
- 44:41Speaker 2: since 2003 to win the U.S. Open.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Would he be excited? I'm like, would you want to
- 44:48Speaker 1: hold on to that record?
- 44:49Speaker 2: He is on record as saying he absolutely wants... It gone.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 44:54Speaker 2: He wants another guy to win it.
- 44:56Speaker 1: But I know that, but I often think, and maybe
- 44:58Speaker 1: the American record specifically is like, is, is different because
- 45:03Speaker 1: you want your country to be doing well and it's
- 45:05Speaker 1: probably better for him in the long run as a
- 45:06Speaker 1: tennis personality.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:08Speaker 1: But like, it would, when you see athletes say they
- 45:11Speaker 1: want their records broken, do you think they mean it?
- 45:14Speaker 2: Deep down? Probably not.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:17Speaker 2: I wouldn't. No. There was a funny moment backstage with, backstage.
- 45:23Speaker 2: It is backstage.
- 45:25Speaker 1: It's all a performance. It's all fake.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Yeah, well, OC kept calling the crowd the audience. Maybe
- 45:30Speaker 2: that's in my head. The audience. Where Serena and Andy
- 45:35Speaker 2: Roddick were in the halls of the US Open. And
- 45:38Speaker 2: they have all the players who've won it and the
- 45:41Speaker 2: year they've won it.
- 45:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 45:43Speaker 2: And Roddick points at his name and he goes, look,
- 45:45Speaker 2: it's just got 2003 under there. And Serena goes, yeah,
- 45:48Speaker 2: they ran out of space on mine. That's good stuff. Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 45:57Speaker 1: That's why they train so hard, so they can have
- 45:59Speaker 1: those little moments about like... I do love those little
- 46:02Speaker 1: moments when they... Athletes that have achieved greatness, like goat-level athletes,
- 46:07Speaker 1: when you just... And they're always so polite and humble
- 46:11Speaker 1: and they're media trained. When you just see these little...
- 46:13Speaker 1: egotistical things.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Slip through and it's so good oh so good.
- 46:17Speaker 1: When they're just like yeah well i'm better than.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Everyone else it's great yeah uh which is why the
- 46:24Speaker 2: last dance with jordan is.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Totally amazing totally because.
- 46:26Speaker 2: You're just seeing him unfiltered like.
- 46:29Speaker 1: And a psychopath.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Oh, psycho. Totally. So, like I said before, Zverev said
- 46:34Speaker 2: Alcaraz and TFO should have just slow played Ben to
- 46:37Speaker 2: his backhand.
- 46:38Speaker 1: Yes.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Courier called Zverev an error extraction machine.
- 46:43Speaker 1: Wow.
- 46:44Speaker 2: Which is basically like so slow to his backhand. And
- 46:47Speaker 2: then because he's playing a lefty, if Shelton hit it
- 46:50Speaker 2: cross court, Zverev could just rip one down the line.
- 46:54Speaker 2: So he would just wait for that ball. And then
- 46:56Speaker 2: would just rip a forehand down the line.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Do you think Shelton didn't have a game plan? You've
- 47:03Speaker 1: got to think something like that. His coaches thought about
- 47:06Speaker 1: it and chatted about it. But I guess another thing
- 47:09Speaker 1: is doing it at arguably the biggest stage in tennis.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Of course. And also, I mean, both huge servers. This match,
- 47:17Speaker 2: to me, was kind of a serve bot match. Like
- 47:20Speaker 2: two guys just bombing serves.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Banging it.
- 47:22Speaker 2: At each other, and Zverev winning, I think, 85% behind
- 47:27Speaker 2: his first serve.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Yeah, right.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:30Speaker 1: It's a 5%.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Yeah. So, I mean, it was just, there were some
- 47:33Speaker 2: good rallies, but it went quick for a 4-7 match. Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Because a lot of points won, obviously, on serve, and
- 47:40Speaker 2: I think Zverev, you know, just was obviously in some
- 47:44Speaker 2: kind of a zone, because when he won, he didn't
- 47:48Speaker 2: know it. He didn't know he won.
- 47:50Speaker 1: Now.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Here we go. All right.
- 47:53Speaker 2: So this is a match. Championship points. Very routinely just
- 47:59Speaker 2: hitting the ball back to the ball kid. Walking away.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Looks at his box. Oh, I won.
- 48:09Speaker 1: Now... What's your... I'll tell you who knows that the
- 48:13Speaker 1: match is over. Shelton. Oh, yeah.
- 48:15Speaker 2: He's aware.
- 48:16Speaker 1: What's your take on this? Because I.
- 48:20Speaker 1: I mean, it kind of reminds me of when I'm
- 48:21Speaker 1: playing pickleball and I'm like, what's the score again? But
- 48:24Speaker 1: that is impossible to me that you couldn't know that
- 48:29Speaker 1: you're on match point of a Grand Slam.
- 48:31Speaker 2: You're about to get to the pinnacle of the mountain.
- 48:36Speaker 1: That's what you've trained your whole life for. You're about
- 48:39Speaker 1: to do it. I mean, he's probably got a sports
- 48:41Speaker 1: psychologist that talks about you play each point on its merits,
- 48:44Speaker 1: all this kind of stuff. I refuse to believe you
- 48:47Speaker 1: could be on Matchpoint and not know the gravity of it.
- 48:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like Neil Armstrong before he steps out on
- 48:52Speaker 2: the moon going, where are we?
- 48:54Speaker 1: Yeah. Hey, where did you take me?
- 48:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Wait, where are we?
- 48:57Speaker 2: What happened here? Is Sizzler out there? Yeah, yeah.
- 49:00Speaker 1: What do you reckon?
- 49:00Speaker 2: Sizzler.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm off to kind of a buffet.
- 49:07Speaker 2: But it's true. I still remember the scores of ping
- 49:10Speaker 2: pong matches I played when I was 15. Yeah.
- 49:12Speaker 1: You know what I mean? And it's also like you,
- 49:14Speaker 1: the point, I don't like, if he didn't know, I
- 49:16Speaker 1: don't like that because that's almost seems like an unfair advantage.
- 49:21Speaker 1: Because part of winning is you've got to feel it.
- 49:24Speaker 1: You've got to feel the pressure. That's part of the
- 49:27Speaker 1: things you have to battle through. Like, has he found
- 49:29Speaker 1: a hack where he can just, like, get lobotomized for
- 49:32Speaker 1: a second and become a tennis robot and be like,
- 49:33Speaker 1: tennis is ball.
- 49:34Speaker 2: It is.
- 49:35Speaker 1: And then the pressure doesn't affect you.
- 49:36Speaker 2: Well, because he said he thought then the score was
- 49:39Speaker 2: 5-1 and then Shelton would serve again and then he
- 49:41Speaker 2: was going to tighten up when he was serving for
- 49:44Speaker 2: the match.
- 49:45Speaker 1: So he's the luckiest guy of all time.
- 49:47Speaker 2: I guess it worked out in his favor. I mean,
- 49:51Speaker 2: his acting is pretty good if he just like.
- 49:53Speaker 1: Okay, so you... All right.
- 49:55Speaker 2: Well, this, if we go into conspiracy, it's like he
- 49:57Speaker 2: wants to endear himself to a hostile crowd that's going
- 50:00Speaker 2: for Shelton and the tennis world in general. And so
- 50:04Speaker 2: was it a ploy to be like, whoa, whoa, I'm so.
- 50:09Speaker 1: Whoa, look at me. I'm like, this is crazy. I
- 50:12Speaker 1: just woke up here and I'm like winning a Grand Slam?
- 50:15Speaker 1: What the hell, dude? You think he's trying to be like,
- 50:18Speaker 1: this is what 16-year-old boys try to do to pick
- 50:21Speaker 1: up girls at school. They're like, what? This is crazy.
- 50:23Speaker 1: I don't even know what. I'm in my arms around
- 50:26Speaker 1: you at the movies. This is insane. Like, come on.
- 50:30Speaker 1: This guy, I just don't think he can be. I
- 50:33Speaker 1: don't think he can be. I think maybe he is
- 50:36Speaker 1: faking it, actually, because I don't think you could not
- 50:39Speaker 1: know that it's a match point. I think it. you
- 50:42Speaker 1: spend your entire, all you do is tennis.
- 50:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:44Speaker 1: From such a young age, all you think is points.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:47Speaker 1: You could be, you would understand, like, I just, it
- 50:51Speaker 1: boggles the mind to think you couldn't.
- 50:53Speaker 2: And I mean, every point does have a different feeling,
- 50:55Speaker 2: depending on scoreboard pressure. Totally. And depending on atmosphere and
- 50:58Speaker 2: where you are. And the don't know you're about to
- 51:01Speaker 2: take your second Grand Slam of the year.
- 51:03Speaker 1: I mean, also, it's like, as we were talking before,
- 51:06Speaker 1: it's like, he's not in, at least in my opinion,
- 51:08Speaker 1: a crossover star yet.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:10Speaker 1: He doesn't have the appeal of like, You know, you
- 51:12Speaker 1: think of like the Williams sisters or these players that
- 51:15Speaker 1: go beyond just the tennis world. He's definitely huge in
- 51:18Speaker 1: the tennis world, as big as you could be, but
- 51:19Speaker 1: he hasn't crossed over. Moments like this, if he's got
- 51:23Speaker 1: a PR team being like, being like, hey, act like
- 51:27Speaker 1: you don't know you won.
- 51:29Speaker 2: Well, I mean, it is kind of charming. And the
- 51:32Speaker 2: fact that it worked out in his favor is crazy.
- 51:35Speaker 1: I thought it was 5-1. I knew it.
- 51:40Speaker 2: I knew that I had broken twice.
- 51:41Speaker 1: I knew that I had broken twice, but I thought.
- 51:44Speaker 2: He only held once. So it's 5-1, okay. I'm going
- 51:47Speaker 2: to have a relaxed service game here, and then I'm
- 51:49Speaker 2: going to get tight on the next one. Well, also
- 51:52Speaker 2: the crowd reacting like it's the end of the match.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Like he just held a service game, and then the
- 51:58Speaker 2: crowd going nuts.
- 51:59Speaker 1: The crowd went crazy. Everyone stands up.
- 52:01Speaker 2: So what's he thinking? Like, wow, people really love that
- 52:04Speaker 2: I just held serve again.
- 52:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:07Speaker 2: While the crowd is like cheering and they're like, oh,
- 52:09Speaker 2: it's all over.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Well, I mean, yeah. I mean, it's classic sausage behavior.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Sausage.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Classic sausage stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's why we love sausage.
- 52:18Speaker 2: You might say he snagged victory. Oh.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Buttered sausage.
- 52:24Speaker 2: So that is the end of the U.S. Open for
- 52:27Speaker 2: another year. Coming up, we have the Asian Hardcourt Swing,
- 52:31Speaker 2: the Davis Cup, the Lever Cup. The tennis never sleeps.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Never sleeps.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Yeah, just like New York. So, but before we wrap
- 52:38Speaker 2: up the episode, let's get Physical? Physical.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Physical.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Okay.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Approaching the net.
- 52:48Speaker 2: Okay.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I'd like to kick it off with you. Do you
- 52:50Speaker 1: have a car? You don't own a car, do you?
- 52:52Speaker 2: I do own a car. Do you? I drove it
- 52:53Speaker 2: here today. Oh, okay.
- 52:55Speaker 1: I always see you on one of those little motorized scooters.
- 52:57Speaker 2: I usually do the recumbent bicycle where you're like lying down. Yes. Yes.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Well, you know when your car gets dirty sometimes. Maybe
- 53:07Speaker 1: there's a big storm, a dust storm, and you've got
- 53:09Speaker 1: to get it cleaned. But sometimes people have fun. They'll
- 53:11Speaker 1: draw little fun little things on the windows of your car.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Oh, it's usually rude. It's very rude.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Sometimes it's a love heart, which I actually like.
- 53:18Speaker 2: I don't get the love heart. Yeah, okay.
- 53:20Speaker 1: You get something else. Well, some hero has done– this
- 53:24Speaker 1: actually rules. They've done– I assume they're an amazing artist.
- 53:29Speaker 1: In the dust on the back of a dirty car
- 53:30Speaker 1: has done a portrait of Rabakina. Look at this. This
- 53:33Speaker 1: is unbelievable.
- 53:34Speaker 2: All right.
- 53:35Speaker 1: This actually has restored my– look at how good– look
- 53:37Speaker 1: at the detail in this.
- 53:39Speaker 2: I mean, that's amazing.
- 53:40Speaker 1: That's incredible.
- 53:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:42Speaker 1: And think about how high pressure that is. Because if
- 53:45Speaker 1: you breathe slightly too hard.
- 53:48Speaker 2: It's all gone. It's gone. I mean, a slight drizzle
- 53:51Speaker 2: takes it out. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:52Speaker 1: If the rain comes.
- 53:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:54Speaker 1: I mean, to be honest, or just if someone comes
- 53:56Speaker 1: over and says, how are you going? Then leans on
- 53:58Speaker 1: your car. Yeah.
- 53:59Speaker 2: So this is obviously a Kazakhstani clip. It's got the
- 54:05Speaker 2: music over it.
- 54:05Speaker 1: The music does add a lot to it. I just
- 54:08Speaker 1: think it's like, I'm not saying it's a waste of time.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Is there a speech bubble coming out of it that says.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I mean, it's amazing. The detail in the hair.
- 54:19Speaker 2: It does look good.
- 54:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's impressive, but ultimately it's for nothing. But
- 54:24Speaker 1: it's actually a great metaphor for life because you're only
- 54:26Speaker 1: great in the moment. Yeah. And it disappears.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:29Speaker 1: And you've got to keep it going.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Beautiful stuff.
- 54:32Speaker 1: That's very nice, isn't it? Now, New York, it's the
- 54:35Speaker 1: celebrity capital of the goddamn world. Alex Yala, she was
- 54:39Speaker 1: at a fashion show in New York. She stepped out
- 54:41Speaker 1: on the red carpet. You were going to love it.
- 54:42Speaker 2: Look at this. Wow. Looks fantastic.
- 54:47Speaker 1: What do you think of the gloves, the double glove combo?
- 54:50Speaker 2: The glove is a bit, let's say, 2020. OJ. OJ,
- 54:52Speaker 2: of course. If the glove don't fit, you must acquit.
- 55:03Speaker 2: She looks great. The thing is, she's struggling on the
- 55:05Speaker 2: cobblestones in those shoes.
- 55:07Speaker 1: Yes.
- 55:07Speaker 2: She's really... Because we know elite athletes, their kinesthetic intelligence
- 55:13Speaker 2: is huge. But she is not comfortable walking. No. But
- 55:18Speaker 2: she looks amazing.
- 55:18Speaker 1: I mean, she looks amazing. And, you know, because it's
- 55:21Speaker 1: New York, it's not just fashion shows. All the celebs
- 55:23Speaker 1: turn up at the tennis, which I love.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And.
- 55:26Speaker 1: As no surprise, there was a lot of them at
- 55:28Speaker 1: this year's US Open. A-list. As A-list as they go.
- 55:31Speaker 1: We're going to run through some of them here.
- 55:34Speaker 2: Well, maybe not so.
- 55:35Speaker 1: I've kind of been thrown under the bus immediately there
- 55:39Speaker 1: with the switching. But that is a beautiful action shot.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Yeah, this is Rami Malek. Am I saying that right?
- 55:45Speaker 1: Yes, and he's an interesting actor. The roles he chooses
- 55:48Speaker 1: to play are quite dark and uncomfortable.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Freddie Mercury, yes. Ben Stiller.
- 55:52Speaker 1: Loves it. He's a mainstay at tennis matches.
- 55:55Speaker 2: Sitting with Jalen Brunson.
- 55:57Speaker 1: Pretty cool.
- 55:57Speaker 2: Yeah. And Brunson, who, you know, obviously just won for
- 56:00Speaker 2: the New York Knicks.
- 56:01Speaker 1: We've got... Tate McRae. Tate McRae, the partner of Australian.
- 56:07Speaker 2: I don't think it's Tate McRae.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Tate.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Tate McRae.
- 56:13Speaker 1: Tate McRae, partner of Kid Leroy, I believe, if they're
- 56:16Speaker 1: still together, which is exciting.
- 56:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 56:19Speaker 1: Who else?
- 56:19Speaker 2: Bezos. Bezos.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I don't know. Is he an A-lister? He owns the A-listers.
- 56:23Speaker 2: I hate these, like, capitalists that are made billions off
- 56:26Speaker 2: the sweat of others.
- 56:27Speaker 1: And then they get to be famous as well. What
- 56:29Speaker 1: do we do? It's disgusting.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, Paris Hilton with generic white man.
- 56:40Speaker 1: Incredible. And one that I very much liked, and I
- 56:45Speaker 1: saw this during the rounds online, was Brad Pitt.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Of course.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Yes. Look at this.
- 56:49Speaker 2: There he is, enjoying himself.
- 56:51Speaker 1: Having a great time. Now, this clip went very viral.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Yes.
- 56:54Speaker 1: Because, and I didn't read, this came to me organically.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Did it?
- 56:58Speaker 1: But there's a comedian out there called Mike Goldstein.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Oh, he's good.
- 57:01Speaker 1: And he likes tennis. He likes tennis. Which is a
- 57:03Speaker 1: lot of tennis.
- 57:03Speaker 2: A lot.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Almost to the detriment of his relationship, according to his wife.
- 57:06Speaker 2: And all his friendships.
- 57:07Speaker 1: And all his friendships. But he put this up and said,
- 57:10Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I know what he's saying there.
- 57:13Speaker 2: I said that. i did do that i that's my
- 57:16Speaker 2: clip that's my.
- 57:16Speaker 1: House that's your house yeah and it's gone very how
- 57:19Speaker 1: many views we have it's over 20 million.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Views this one was like 20 million and then i
- 57:23Speaker 2: was like yeah and then i was like i gotta
- 57:25Speaker 2: repost it with the voiceover i was like because i
- 57:29Speaker 2: enhanced the footage yeah where you can actually hear what brad.
- 57:32Speaker 1: Pitt and i think do we have it here.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Hopefully so brad pitt brad pitt brad pitt brad pitt
- 57:39Speaker 2: brad pitt.
- 57:42Speaker 1: Isn't that amazing It's art. That is art.
- 57:45Speaker 2: That is the most viral thing I've ever done.
- 57:47Speaker 1: So you've been a comedian. How long have you been
- 57:49Speaker 1: a comedian for?
- 57:50Speaker 2: 20 years.
- 57:50Speaker 1: And so that video is the most success you've ever had.
- 57:53Speaker 2: That's me winning the US Open.
- 57:55Speaker 1: So you go at the end. Yeah. That's the cherry
- 57:59Speaker 1: on the cake. That's a career's work. They made that
- 58:03Speaker 1: video there. 20 million views.
- 58:04Speaker 2: I could craft all my stand-up jokes. I could be
- 58:06Speaker 2: on national TV for years, but this is what I'll
- 58:09Speaker 2: be remembered for.
- 58:11Speaker 1: I think it's beautiful. And just very, very, this is
- 58:14Speaker 1: very quickly. I know we were talking the other week
- 58:16Speaker 1: about you being in the Novak documentary.
- 58:18Speaker 2: Yeah, another huge moment.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Another huge moment. I hate to be a one-upper, but
- 58:23Speaker 1: the other night I was watching a little something on
- 58:24Speaker 1: the couch with my partner, and yeah, look, I don't
- 58:28Speaker 1: know how else to say this, but I'm in something
- 58:30Speaker 1: more important with an athlete that will be remembered for,
- 58:33Speaker 1: you know, doing far greater things than Novak. I'm in
- 58:36Speaker 1: the Ray Gunn documentary. Look at this.
- 58:38Speaker 2: Look at this.
- 58:39Speaker 1: So this is, there's Ray Gunn. And look who's sitting
- 58:42Speaker 1: next to Ray Gunn.
- 58:43Speaker 2: Oh, was that? It?
- 58:44Speaker 1: That's it.
- 58:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, Ray Gunn is the.
- 58:49Speaker 1: No, yeah, watch it again.
- 58:50Speaker 2: Wait, wait. Look to her.
- 58:51Speaker 1: We go to the wide shot. Look at that.
- 58:53Speaker 2: There's you right there.
- 58:54Speaker 1: There's me sitting next to her.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Is that you? It says... It's got captions. Did you
- 58:58Speaker 2: call her the legend herself?
- 59:00Speaker 1: No, that wasn't me. That wasn't me. I do remember, though,
- 59:03Speaker 1: they played a video of me dancing in front of her.
- 59:07Speaker 1: And she said, you're a bad dancer. Isn't that crazy?
- 59:12Speaker 2: I mean, but she is an icon. She is the
- 59:15Speaker 2: Novak Djokovic of breakdancing. Female breakdancing.
- 59:19Speaker 1: I think you'd say the goat, absolutely.
- 59:21Speaker 2: So, I mean, yeah, you've absolutely one-upped me there.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, and I'm sorry to do it, but
- 59:25Speaker 1: you kind of can't let these moments slip. So that
- 59:28Speaker 1: was Approaching the Net.
- 59:29Speaker 2: Hey! Yeah, 100%.
- 59:34Speaker 1: Now, I mean, before we get out of here, there's
- 59:36Speaker 1: one last thing I think we probably should talk about.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Controversy?
- 59:41Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, this whole sports Sweeney situation. What's your
- 59:45Speaker 1: take on it?
- 59:46Speaker 2: Oh, the Sweeney thing. Everyone's talking about it.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Everyone's talking about it.
- 59:51Speaker 2: A lot of threads and tweets and a lot of conversation.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Yeah. I'll be interested to hear your take on it.
- 59:58Speaker 2: Okay. So my personal opinion on the Sweeney thing, I'm
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: willing to go on record.
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: I love it. Yeah.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Because that's kind of the way I thought as well.
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: And I know a lot of other people have been
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: saying different things and bringing in different arguments around sport
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: and the way we consume sport and athletes. But I
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: think it was.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: awesome pretty good i can't stop looking at it i
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: saw it and i was like wow.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: I know wow my mouth opened i was like oh
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: my god i ran to my my girlfriend yeah and
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: she didn't care weirdly but i was like this was
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: the best thing i've ever seen in sports yeah yeah
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: yeah i.
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: Mean i didn't chill my wife because i was like
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: this is for.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Me yeah that's your personal stuff yeah Anyway, well done
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: to Dane Sweeney. So 109th in the world. That's his
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: world ranking. Hell yes. Unbelievable.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Big round of applause.
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: The great man. Well done.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Why is it doing what it's doing?
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: Get it out of my face.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: So that is the end of the Grand Slam season.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Like I said, we got the Asian Hardcourt Swing coming up.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: 1,000 events, 500 events, 250s, Lever Cup. Obviously, the Davis
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Cup is going to be red hot. And so we'll
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: be back every week in the lead up to the
- 1:01:01Speaker 2: big one, the A.O.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Keep listening. Do you want to sing this song to end?
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: So, just really quick, let's dip in on Tennis FM.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: The big hit of the week, Robbie Williams. And through
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: it all, he offers us protection.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: Tennis-themed love and affection. Whether we're right or wrong.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Back from 30.
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: Oh, wherever his bounces take me. I know that he
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: won't break me. Ben Shelton will take the fall.
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Even though he's got Trinity.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: We're loving sausage instead. Sausage instead.
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: We did it. All right, I got to go. I
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: got to go. That was awesome.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: Please give some love to the baby.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: Love to the baby.
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: Love to the baby.
