- 0:00There is considerable confusion about the concept of rebirth and
- 0:04the development and growth of the psychic being across
- 0:07multiple lifetimes. Popular imagination has it that
- 0:11the same individual personality is reborn and that under certain
- 0:16circumstances past lives can be identified and recalled.
- 0:22Then they can find their soulmate and re establish the
- 0:25relationships of the past. There is a strong desire to
- 0:30survive after death in some recognizable manner.
- 0:34Christians find this in an eventual resurrection to heaven
- 0:38to rejoin one's loved ones there.
- 0:41The ancient Greeks had legends where the shades of people who
- 0:44had died went to various holding places in the underworld.
- 0:49The story of Orpheus and Eurydice had Orpheus use his
- 0:53musical skills to charm Hades and Persephone into allowing him
- 0:57to take his wife Eurydice back to the living as long as he
- 1:01followed the condition of not looking back.
- 1:05He failed the test, but the message is clear that somehow a
- 1:10departed soul can return and resume its life in the world
- 1:14with its existing personality. The Romans adopted a similar
- 1:19view, and Virgil in the Aeneid had the Trojan hero Eneus enter
- 1:25the underworld and speak to his departed father.
- 1:29Dante and the Divine Comedy described various circles of
- 1:33Hell, and the poet Virgil, acting as his guide, showed him
- 1:38the fate of numerous individuals who had committed certain
- 1:41heinous deeds and who maintained their individual personality
- 1:46during their stay in Hell. A region called Purgatory
- 1:51contained souls that were capable of redemption, and
- 1:54finally, he described Paradise, where the innocent souls and
- 2:00redeemed were able to reside in bliss.
- 2:04Souls that were intended to be reborn were first bathed in the
- 2:08waters of the river Lethe, which wiped out the memory of the past
- 2:12lifetime. There are instances and
- 2:16circumstances that indicate that it is possible, but not probable
- 2:20or widespread, that a memory of past incarnations can be brought
- 2:25forward into the current lifetime.
- 2:28In the Bhagwad Gita, Sri Krishna tells Arjuna that while he
- 2:32recalls his past incarnations, Arjuna does not.
- 2:37Sri Krishna as an avatar was able to transcend the usual
- 2:41circumstances of human birth. Arjuna as a human being, did
- 2:46not. The Tibetan Buddhist tradition
- 2:50has studied the question of rebirth and determined that
- 2:53certain realized souls could take conscious birth to continue
- 2:57a lineage. They brought with them in their
- 2:59new incarnation an affinity for specific items used in the prior
- 3:05incarnation in order to be recognized, as well as a line of
- 3:10development that allowed for the continuance of the work of the
- 3:13prior incarnations without necessarily carrying the entire
- 3:18burden of details of the lives of past incarnations into the
- 3:24current life. Under normal circumstances, the
- 3:28psychic being, as it develops and matures, brings forward from
- 3:33past lifetimes the essence of the experience, not the
- 3:38individual personality or specific memories or
- 3:42relationships. The Greeks had it right to the
- 3:45extent that the process removes the specific details and
- 3:49memories of past lifetimes, which otherwise would tie down
- 3:54and limit the soul's experience and development.
- 4:00A disciple asks what exactly is the solar psychic being and what
- 4:07is meant by the evolution of the psychic being?
- 4:10What is its relation to the Supreme?
- 4:14The Mother responds quote. The soul and the psychic being
- 4:18are not exactly the same thing, although their essence is the
- 4:22same. The soul is the divine spark
- 4:25that dwells at the centre of each being.
- 4:28It is identical with its divine origin.
- 4:31It is the divine in man. The psychic being is formed
- 4:36progressively around this divine centre, the soul and the course
- 4:41of its innumerable lives in the terrestrial evolution, until the
- 4:45time comes when the psychic being, fully formed and wholly
- 4:50awakened, becomes the conscious sheath of the soul around which
- 4:55it is formed and thus identified with the Divine.
- 5:00It becomes His perfect instrument in the world.
