- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, the podcast
- 0:07designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:14you by the Great News Podcast. Tired of all the doom and gloom
- 0:18news for mainstream media? You'll get none of that there.
- 0:22Instead, you'll find inspiring stories and developments making
- 0:25the world a better place. Where can you find it?
- 0:29The link is in the show notes. Today's quote comes from Lee
- 0:34Iacocca, the man who created the Ford Mustang.
- 0:39One of my favorite cars. The original 1 anyways.
- 0:43And he was famously fired by Henry Ford the second after 32
- 0:47years with the company. And he then walked into a
- 0:52bankrupt Chrysler and turned it into one of the greatest
- 0:56corporate comebacks in American history.
- 0:59A man who built his entire career on the power of decisive
- 1:02action and under impossible pressure.
- 1:06He once said even a correct decision is wrong when it was
- 1:12taken too late. Now, most of us were raised on
- 1:17the idea that the goal of decision making is to get it
- 1:20right, gather the information, weigh the options, consider
- 1:25every angle and wait until you're sure and then, and only
- 1:30then, decide what to do. Iacocca spent a lifetime showing
- 1:36why that instinct taken too far is its own kind of failure.
- 1:42He had a way of illustrating it, that it's kind of interesting.
- 1:47He used to talk about duck hunting.
- 1:49You can aim at a duck and get it in your sights, but the duck is
- 1:54always moving. In order to hit that duck, you
- 1:57have to move your gun ahead of where the duck is now.
- 2:02But a committee faced with a major decision can't always move
- 2:06as quickly as the events it's trying to respond to.
- 2:10By the time the committee is ready to shoot, the duck has
- 2:14flown away. That image is exactly what this
- 2:19quote is all about. The world does not pause while
- 2:22you deliberate. Markets are moving,
- 2:25opportunities close, relationships shift.
- 2:30The moment that was available to you yesterday may be gone
- 2:34tomorrow. Not because the decision was
- 2:37wrong, but because the window for it had passed.
- 2:42Iacocca understood this because he lived it in one of the
- 2:46highest stakes business environments in history.
- 2:49When he arrived at Chrysler, the company was weeks from collapse.
- 2:54There was no time for endless analysis.
- 2:56Every day of an action was a day the company moved closer to
- 3:00bankruptcy. The decisions he made weren't
- 3:04always perfect, but they were made, and making them in time
- 3:09was as important as making them correctly.
- 3:12He put it another way, too. If we wait until we've satisfied
- 3:17all the uncertainties, it may be too late.
- 3:21Certainty is a luxury that real decisions rarely have.
- 3:26Waiting isn't prudence. It's paralysis dressed up as
- 3:29thoroughness. The question Iacocca is really
- 3:33asking is this. What is the cost of waiting?
- 3:37Because that cost is real. It just doesn't always announce
- 3:41itself as loudly as a wrong decision does.
- 3:44A bad decision makes noise. A delayed decision often just
- 3:48quietly closes the door you didn't notice shutting.
- 3:51I can look back at decisions I delayed far past the point when
- 3:54they needed to be made, not because I didn't know what the
- 3:58right call was, but because I kept waiting until I felt more
- 4:02certain, more ready for sure. And in almost every case, the
- 4:07delay cost more than any imperfection in the decision
- 4:11itself would have. Iacocca is right.
- 4:15Sometimes the timing is the decision.
- 4:19So here's the question. What decision have you been
- 4:22sitting on? One that you already know is
- 4:25probably right, but you're still waiting to make it because the
- 4:30duck is moving. The window that's open today may
- 4:35not be open tomorrow. And the most correct decision in
- 4:39the world made too late, is no decision at all.
- 4:44You don't need certainty. You need courage, and you need a
- 4:49deadline. Decide before the duck flies.
- 4:54That's it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 4:56for now but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 5:02Same pod time, same pod stationed with another daily
- 5:08quote.
