- 0:05Speaker 1: It's ft senior insider Ken Rosenthal.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Ken, I'd like to actually start with the Phillies and Dodgers,
- 0:10Speaker 2: if you don't mind, because I think it might be
- 0:12Speaker 2: two of the best teams, if not the two best
- 0:14Speaker 2: teams in baseball.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Do you agree, and what do you think this is
- 0:18Speaker 1: going to look like?
- 0:18Speaker 2: With Shoho Tani finally pitching in a postseason game for
- 0:22Speaker 2: the first time.
- 0:23Speaker 3: I agree, Scott.
- 0:24Speaker 4: I think it's going to be an amazing series and
- 0:27Speaker 4: I can't wait to see how it transfer.
- 0:29Speaker 3: It's so interesting on so many levels.
- 0:31Speaker 4: This for the Phillies is not a last dance, but
- 0:34Speaker 4: this corps has some questions going forward, and you look
- 0:38Speaker 4: at the team and the roster the way it sets up.
- 0:41Speaker 4: Schwarper's a free agent after this year. Real Newtow is
- 0:44Speaker 4: a free agent after this year. Both are expected back.
- 0:46Speaker 4: But how many chances does this group get and how
- 0:49Speaker 4: often are.
- 0:50Speaker 3: They going to be able to do it? It's not
- 0:51Speaker 3: a young team necessarily, so that's one element.
- 0:54Speaker 4: The other element, from just a baseball perspective, the Phillies
- 0:59Speaker 4: left these against the Dodgers' big lefties at the top
- 1:01Speaker 4: of the lineup, o Otani and Freeman obviously, and then yes.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Otani pitching the Dodgers' bullpen.
- 1:07Speaker 4: There are so many layers here, there are in every series,
- 1:09Speaker 4: but this one because of the star power with Otani
- 1:12Speaker 4: and Schwarber, because of the environment that we're gonna see
- 1:16Speaker 4: in Philly, which is always great.
- 1:17Speaker 3: It's just gonna be really good, no doubt.
- 1:20Speaker 2: One more on the Dodgers side bullpen question marks heading
- 1:24Speaker 2: into the series. Do you feel like anything was answered
- 1:27Speaker 2: or determined? And of course I need your thoughts on
- 1:31Speaker 2: the wild ride of Roki Sazaki from signing with the
- 1:34Speaker 2: Dodgers in the off season to not really giving them
- 1:37Speaker 2: much during the season to potential closer.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Well, the Sasaki question is sort of answered. It is
- 1:46Speaker 4: not answered in full in my opinion, Scott, but they closed.
- 1:49Speaker 3: With him the other night.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Not a safe situation, but he was the guy who
- 1:52Speaker 4: finished the game. I expect that he could be used
- 1:55Speaker 4: in that role here as well. Now their bullpen is
- 1:57Speaker 4: a serious question. Now they'll have Kershaw available in relief
- 2:01Speaker 4: in this particular series. I would imagine they'll have Glass now,
- 2:04Speaker 4: even though he's pitching Game four, would be scheduled to
- 2:07Speaker 4: pitch Game four.
- 2:08Speaker 3: They can do some things with the bullpen.
- 2:10Speaker 4: But ultimately the guys they have Vesia the others, they're
- 2:14Speaker 4: gonna have to get out and Sosaki is not going
- 2:17Speaker 4: to save the team.
- 2:17Speaker 3: And I'm also not so sure about Sasaki strictly.
- 2:20Speaker 4: From the standpoint of here's this young guy, indis crucible.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Now we saw a young guy in a crucible last
- 2:27Speaker 4: night do amazing things. I'm talking, of course about Cam Schlitler.
- 2:31Speaker 4: But with Sasaki, it seems like he's a different guy
- 2:35Speaker 4: than he was when he first came up, when he
- 2:37Speaker 4: was sort of nervous, sort of feeling for his spot
- 2:40Speaker 4: and the team and all of that. And now there's
- 2:44Speaker 4: a confidence about him. The stuff is, of course the stuff.
- 2:46Speaker 4: It's really good that confidence translates into performance, at least
- 2:51Speaker 4: it has so far. Will it sustain itself and will
- 2:53Speaker 4: he be able to do that in this series? It's
- 2:57Speaker 4: an intriguing thought for sure. The Dodgers sort of need
- 3:00Speaker 4: it to happen.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I'm just not sure it will hitting on show.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Hey Otani, the starter for Game one is his workload
- 3:08Speaker 5: built up to exactly where the Dodgers wanted to be.
- 3:11Speaker 5: From the outside, it looks like it was perfect. They
- 3:14Speaker 5: slowly worked him in they were doing something that had
- 3:17Speaker 5: never been done, somebody rehabbing Tommy John in the big
- 3:20Speaker 5: leagues while still dhing. But is he worked up to
- 3:23Speaker 5: where they want him to be because you saw Lake,
- 3:26Speaker 5: Snell and Yawamoto both go career high pitches or distances,
- 3:32Speaker 5: and so do they feel like show heyes where they
- 3:34Speaker 5: want him to be?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Eric, I don't know that it's ideal, And I don't
- 3:38Speaker 4: know that he's going eight or nine in any of
- 3:40Speaker 4: these games.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Kenny go six, he has done that, and Kenny go seven.
- 3:44Speaker 4: If he's done six, yes, I would expect if the
- 3:47Speaker 4: pitch count is at a reasonable place. But with him,
- 3:50Speaker 4: there are so many other factors involved, fatigue where you
- 3:54Speaker 4: want him the rest of the series. Now, the reason
- 3:56Speaker 4: he's pitching where he's pitching in this series, and the
- 3:59Speaker 4: reason he was lined up for Game three in the
- 4:00Speaker 4: previous series is because they want him to get a
- 4:03Speaker 4: day off after.
- 4:04Speaker 3: He starts, which makes a ton of sense.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Give him a day off, get his legs back under
- 4:08Speaker 4: him for the offensive part of his game too. But
- 4:11Speaker 4: if you're asking me if he's going nine and doing
- 4:13Speaker 4: to Cam Schlitler even eight innings and one hundred and
- 4:15Speaker 4: seven pitches. I don't know that that's happening, but they
- 4:19Speaker 4: should be able to win without him doing that.
- 4:21Speaker 3: They should be able to handle it. So we'll see
- 4:23Speaker 3: how it all goes.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Yeah, this Yankee Blue Jay series is gonna be one
- 4:28Speaker 6: for the record books. I just got a weird feel
- 4:30Speaker 6: and it's gonna come to a lot of one run games.
- 4:33Speaker 6: We know you're there, we know you're talking about it.
- 4:35Speaker 6: Talk about this Yankee team. They're on a real high
- 4:37Speaker 6: right now. Big game yesterday from Schutler, and they got
- 4:41Speaker 6: most likely.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Louis Hill on the mound tomorrow. What do you think?
- 4:45Speaker 6: How do you think this Blue Jay team stacks up?
- 4:47Speaker 6: We know the regular season is totally different than the postseason.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Then been there in a long time.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Talk a little bit about that.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Well.
- 4:53Speaker 3: I love the Jays and I love the way they
- 4:54Speaker 3: go about it.
- 4:55Speaker 4: Low strikeouts and actually lower strikeout rate in the major leagues.
- 5:00Speaker 4: They have a number of role players who contribute. Springer
- 5:02Speaker 4: with this amazing comeback of the year story. Bishett is questionable.
- 5:07Speaker 4: John Schneider, the manager, spoke earlier before and he said
- 5:09Speaker 4: they have not made a decision yet.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I'd be surprised if he were on the roster.
- 5:13Speaker 4: Schneider said, if he's going to be on the roster,
- 5:15Speaker 4: he's going to have to play and play regularly. It's
- 5:17Speaker 4: hard to imagine that happening, but they have not ruled
- 5:20Speaker 4: it out yet. Without Bashett, Guerrero has not been quite
- 5:23Speaker 4: the same. I don't know if it's because Bashett is
- 5:25Speaker 4: not hitting behind him or not, but that's going.
- 5:28Speaker 3: To be something for them that is going to be
- 5:30Speaker 3: a huge Factor's Laddie in this series?
- 5:32Speaker 4: John Schneider basically said he just wants Laddie to play free.
- 5:35Speaker 3: Now.
- 5:36Speaker 4: As for the Yankees, it's interesting to me, and Schneider
- 5:41Speaker 4: noted this in his press conference, it's not quite the
- 5:43Speaker 4: same team or it's not quite the same style that
- 5:47Speaker 4: we've seen from them.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Now.
- 5:48Speaker 4: Granted, they hit home runs, they led the majors in
- 5:51Speaker 4: that category, that's what they do. But they've also shown
- 5:55Speaker 4: other ways to score and they've been more resourceful.
- 5:58Speaker 3: They've been a better base running team.
- 6:00Speaker 4: So I expect them to play well because they've played
- 6:03Speaker 4: well for several weeks now.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And yeah, pitching.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Will always be the question and how that bullpen is
- 6:09Speaker 4: going to perform. That's a big question with the Yankees,
- 6:12Speaker 4: and it's going to be that way until I don't know,
- 6:14Speaker 4: they figure out a way to just get consistency out
- 6:17Speaker 4: of that group.
- 6:18Speaker 3: But I'm with you, Todd.
- 6:20Speaker 4: It should be a really interesting series, no doubt.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Hold On, I didn't want to clarify the Blue Jays
- 6:27Speaker 6: were there in twenty twenty three. I said, it's been
- 6:29Speaker 6: a while since they've been there, so.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Since Yes, though it's been a while. Yes, they kept
- 6:33Speaker 1: losing the.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Yes, it's been ten years, so yeah, incredible.
- 6:38Speaker 6: So my question to you is basically what the team
- 6:42Speaker 6: you said with the Blue Jays, like, how do you
- 6:45Speaker 6: do you think the hitting is going to be enough
- 6:46Speaker 6: for this team coming through or do you think the
- 6:48Speaker 6: Yankee pitching is going to be there again with their
- 6:50Speaker 6: starting staff?
- 6:52Speaker 4: Well, I do expect the Yankee pitching to be there again,
- 6:55Speaker 4: and freed Rodin and now Schlitler.
- 6:57Speaker 3: You have to like that. The Blue Jays offense.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Is something of a question and they are not this
- 7:03Speaker 4: powerhouse that you might want from them, right. You want
- 7:07Speaker 4: ideally a team that slugs and does everything in the postseason,
- 7:11Speaker 4: But at the same time, they remind me somewhat of Milwaukee.
- 7:15Speaker 4: They're not quite the pressure or putting the pressure on
- 7:19Speaker 4: the same way that Milwaukee does on the basis, but
- 7:21Speaker 4: they're good that way, So yeah, would I like to
- 7:25Speaker 4: see them hit the ball of the ballpark a little
- 7:27Speaker 4: bit more, sure, but that's not generally the way they play,
- 7:30Speaker 4: and they are a team that finds ways and that
- 7:33Speaker 4: is one of the things that's been there defining Mark
- 7:36Speaker 4: this year now. Also in the regular season, the Yankees
- 7:39Speaker 4: played pretty poorly.
- 7:40Speaker 1: Against the Blue Jays.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Those were those crazy era games and all that stuff.
- 7:43Speaker 4: That was going on. So I expect the Yankees are
- 7:46Speaker 4: gonna have to clean it up because if they give
- 7:48Speaker 4: the Jay's opportunities like that, that will be difficult for them.
- 7:52Speaker 5: Everything's under a microscope, especially what managers do at this time.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Has there been any discussion or if you heard John
- 7:58Speaker 5: Schneider re visit what happened the last time they were
- 8:02Speaker 5: in the playoffs with a bullpen that was ready to
- 8:05Speaker 5: go and he decided to take Barrios out early in
- 8:09Speaker 5: Minnesota and it essentially fell off of it, and I
- 8:12Speaker 5: felt like it was the front office. Has it been
- 8:14Speaker 5: addressed since you guys have been up there and having
- 8:17Speaker 5: these press conferences.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Well, he was asked just in general what he's learned
- 8:22Speaker 4: about managing in the postseason, and basically he said you've
- 8:24Speaker 4: got to read and react and gave the normal answer
- 8:27Speaker 4: you would expect from any manager.
- 8:29Speaker 3: He is well aware of what happened with Barrios. We
- 8:32Speaker 3: all are well aware of it.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I don't know I that there's any need for anyone
- 8:35Speaker 4: to rehash it, so to speak, but I would expect that.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Whoever made that decision, whether it was the front office,
- 8:42Speaker 3: whether it was Schneider, whether it was some combination of both,
- 8:45Speaker 3: they learned their lesson and hey, I wrote about this today.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Managers in these moments, they do things that are questionable.
- 8:52Speaker 4: That's just the nature of the beast, and it's going
- 8:56Speaker 4: to be that way in this series, is going to
- 8:57Speaker 4: be that way and every series going forward. That's part
- 8:59Speaker 4: of the this time of year. But often what we
- 9:03Speaker 4: judge is outcome based, and that can go either way.
- 9:07Speaker 4: When the Burrio's decision was made, that reminded me somewhat
- 9:11Speaker 4: of well, what happened in some of these series in
- 9:15Speaker 4: the wildcard rounds, where you could second get it right
- 9:18Speaker 4: away and say what are they doing? I thought with
- 9:21Speaker 4: BeO the other night, I know I wasn't pitching well necessarily,
- 9:23Speaker 4: but I thought.
- 9:24Speaker 3: That was early for Alex Cora. I thought last night
- 9:26Speaker 3: he stuck with Connelly early too long.
- 9:28Speaker 4: These are all debatable things. The managers always have their
- 9:31Speaker 4: reasons for doing things. But I would expect a better
- 9:34Speaker 4: version of the Blue Jays game management than we saw
- 9:38Speaker 4: in that Wildcard series.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Okay, and that's where I want to finish, just if
- 9:42Speaker 2: you can elaborate more on what you put together last
- 9:45Speaker 2: night about Alex Korra and how that blends into the
- 9:48Speaker 2: way that the Red Sox roster was constructed. Not a
- 9:51Speaker 2: good defensive team. I didn't feel like they were very
- 9:53Speaker 2: intimidating offensively. Obviously they traded Devers Roman Anthony quickly became
- 9:57Speaker 2: a key piece. Do you place a lot of blame
- 10:00Speaker 2: on Core for managing? Did the Red Sox really have
- 10:02Speaker 2: a chance here?
- 10:04Speaker 4: I don't place a lot of blame necessarily. I thought
- 10:07Speaker 4: he managed add a character for him. He was aggressive
- 10:10Speaker 4: in Game two, that was more in character last night.
- 10:13Speaker 4: Sticking with Early as long as he did that surprised me.
- 10:16Speaker 4: Now he said there was poor defense. There were some
- 10:19Speaker 4: balls that got.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Through, okay, but it was a long time.
- 10:22Speaker 4: He was in there thirty one pitches before he was
- 10:24Speaker 4: removed in a game that must win, it's an elimination game,
- 10:28Speaker 4: and it wasn't the way he managed the night before
- 10:30Speaker 4: with BeO. So it was just different, and that surprised me.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Were they as good as the Yankees?
- 10:36Speaker 4: No, and Scott, the things you mentioned, I believe are
- 10:39Speaker 4: exactly right. Defensively a little short and offensively short as well,
- 10:43Speaker 4: especially without Anthony, So they've got some work to do.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Gregman's got the opt out. Stories got the opt out.
- 10:50Speaker 4: I don't know this story will opt out, but I
- 10:52Speaker 4: would expect Bregman will, and they're gonna.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Have to find some more offense. Even beyond that, was
- 10:58Speaker 3: this Alex Corus fault that they lost.
- 11:00Speaker 1: This is a reason.
- 11:00Speaker 4: No, what surprised me, and the reason I wrote what
- 11:03Speaker 4: I did is because it just didn't seem to me
- 11:06Speaker 4: that he demonstrated the normal Alex Kor feel for the
- 11:09Speaker 4: game that we've come so accustomed to see.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Yeah, the expectations are high for him.
- 11:14Speaker 2: He's done a great job in games, very often, including
- 11:17Speaker 2: to a World Series title several years ago. Ken, thank you.
- 11:20Speaker 2: We're excited for the broadcast. We'll be watching Blue Jays
- 11:22Speaker 2: and Yankees and you on the sideline.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Thanks guys, thank you.
- 11:26Speaker 2: That's Ken Rosenthal, that's the inside scoop. Fair Territory is
- 11:30Speaker 2: back on Tuesday. Tuesday, Fair Territory as we adjust with
- 11:34Speaker 2: the postseason schedule, so you can get Ken's thoughts on
- 11:38Speaker 2: the series he's covering and everything else, just like you
- 11:40Speaker 2: did with us on a longer form on Fair Territory
- 11:43Speaker 2: wherever you get your pods
