- 0:57SPEAKER_01: It's always a privilege to have time with you.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: Today I wanted to talk about some common problems faced by women in the workplace.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: I do think that while we have made great strides for some equalities in the workplace, there are some problems that women still face.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Women make up nearly half of the labor force throughout the world today.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: And according to the Pew Research Foundation or Pew Research Center, women employees make up more than 40% of the workforce in 114 countries.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: However, they do still they do still have to deal with gender biases, stereotypes, and then there's the work-life balance demands.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: And I'm not disputing that men have work-life balance demands as well.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: I know that I work with several clients, and we talk about because I I work with both men and women, and I know that men face many work-life balance issues as well.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: But I just wanted to focus on the women for today.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: What are some of those common problems that they face in the workplace?
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: Number one is the work-life balance.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Most modern women do struggle to find that happy medium between their job and their personal life.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Many working moms find themselves sacrificing some of their family time or their free time in order to meet their work demands, in order to prove themselves at work and to succeed and to really move themselves forward on that professional trajectory.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: And they often find themselves in a dead-end position between late nights at the office or hours spent working on important projects, and then they feel that mom guilt for missing their kids' activities, such as sporting events, or school plays, or dance recitals, or even just the bedtime routine.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: So over time, that work-life balance can take a toll on that on a woman's sense of well-being and productivity, and then those relationships, which can cause a sense of burnout.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Another problem that women do face still in the workplace is harassment.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: According to the Institute of Women's Policy Research, anywhere from a quarter to more than eight out of ten women experience workplace harassment in their lifetime.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: And studies show that in most cases harassment does come from a man in a position of authority.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So whether it's non-sexual harassment, such as sexist remark remarks, maybe some microaggressions, or a sexist manager attempting to be seductive or or whatnot, harassment and discrimination, and also assaults at work have serious consequences for the individuals and also for the businesses as a whole.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Harassed women may suffer from severe mental and or physical consequences.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: They might end up quitting and end up facing unemployment or just reduced opportunity for career advancement and then consequently financial difficulties and just other issues.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: There are also fewer opportunities for advancement.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: And I know that we, again, we've made strides, but there are studies that say that women are typically perceived as less competent as men, and male workers in general have better access to career development and growth opportunities.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Why?
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Because it is widely assumed that women do have a lack of leadership potential or that family, uh, female professionals have a harder time uh being able to balance, and therefore it's harder for them to advance their careers into those higher uh income brackets, and um even with high-achieving women, they they often have to work harder to harder than maybe their male counterparts in order to just prove themselves, which then feeds into the false belief of I'm not good enough if, for instance, they don't find themselves moving on that career traer trajectory.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Uh, another real problem that women still face today is equal pay.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: According to the P Research Center, again, women earn 84% of what men earned in 2020.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Unequal pay is one of the most significant issues that women in the workplace face on a global level.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: And then another problem that we face as women in the workplace is just the lack of role models.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: One of the problems that women face is that there is a lack of women who have succeeded in those roles and can act as role models.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: So with the fewer women who've succeeded, it's harder for female, other females to see that it is possible.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: So, how do we overcome this?
- 5:25SPEAKER_01: Well, despite the increasing number of powerful and high-achieving women, there is still these problems that we face.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: So we have to figure out ways to strike that work-life balance.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: And it's really important, or at least from my perspective, that balance doesn't mean equal.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: You know, some it's giving ourselves grace to say that some days work is going to be you know higher on that list, and then other days family time is.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: So it's it's really important to set priorities and organize oneself and making sure that that self-care is part of that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: Reporting harassment.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: If there is harassment in the workplace, it is absolutely imperative that there is a way for you to report it or figure out how you can make sure that you protect yourself from internalizing it as though it is some fault of yours.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, as a woman, it is so easy to think that maybe you have done something wrong.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: And the moment we go into that place, we're now opening up the doors to shame, and shame can keep us playing small and can absolutely keep you from moving forward in your career.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: Seeking a role model outside of your company.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: So while there might be a lack of female role models in your particular office, finding successful women outside of your particular company, networking with other women who have advanced their careers, asking for help.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: Many women in the workplace believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness or incompetence or failure or that they can't they can't do it all.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: And it is so vitally important to know that seeking support can absolutely help.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: There, you it's so important to know that you have a support system, whether it's be through family, friends, a coach, uh, somebody that you can trust where you can feel that you can talk about what's coming up for you and work through it.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Clearing, uh setting clear boundaries, making sure that you do not have to say yes to every single request or demand.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: It is absolutely imperative to know how to set clear boundaries because without those clear boundaries, it is very likely that burnout will happen.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: And then, of course, working on one's mindset, you know, recognizing when assumptions of self are being made, when those false beliefs are popping up, you know, the feelings of not being good enough or competent enough, any of those self-limiting beliefs, it is so important to reveal those and to work through those.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: And I know that I absolutely have worked with my clients, several clients, on things such as that.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Because the truth is how we talk to ourselves, what we believe about ourselves, those thoughts create feelings, which then are gonna lead to the actions that we take and eventually the results.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: And so it is so, so important to have the ability to work through whatever those self-limiting beliefs might be that could be holding you back.
