- 0:08Speaker 1: and editor. You can find his works around in sltrib
- 0:13Speaker 1: dot com. And he's a movie critic. You will find
- 0:16Speaker 1: his reviews moviecricket dot net. Good morning, Sean, Good morning.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Let's get right to it. Some interesting movies here.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yes, we have three to talk about it. We will
- 0:25Speaker 2: start with Knight of the Night of These Zoo Apocalypse.
- 0:30Speaker 2: It's not every animated kids movie that has in the
- 0:34Speaker 2: credits inspired by a concept by Clive Barker.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Oh my, that sounds like not for kids. This is this.
- 0:41Speaker 3: This is the guy who came up with the hell
- 0:42Speaker 3: Raiser movies.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So yeah, we are at a zoo at closing time
- 0:46Speaker 2: and a tiny glowing meteorite lands in the petting zoo
- 0:49Speaker 2: and a rabbit finds it and eats it, Yes, and
- 0:52Speaker 2: it changes him into a ravenous, glowing mutant beast of course.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Like a zombie or something.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And he bites another animal and that animal turns into
- 0:59Speaker 2: a gloing mutant bee, and so on and so on. Yes, uh,
- 1:03Speaker 2: there are a few animals that don't get turned into
- 1:05Speaker 2: zombie mutant animals. So, uh, main ones are Gracie who's
- 1:10Speaker 2: a wolf, and Dan, who's a wild mountain lion who
- 1:13Speaker 2: just got captured for the zoo. And they have to
- 1:15Speaker 2: go from you know, we ain't partners, we ain't friends,
- 1:18Speaker 2: to to relying on each other if they want to
- 1:20Speaker 2: end this alien invasion.
- 1:23Speaker 3: It has its moments.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:24Speaker 3: The dialogue is kind of insipid though, and great tracts
- 1:27Speaker 3: from that. Animation is not bad.
- 1:30Speaker 2: There's there's the one thing about the alien ones is
- 1:34Speaker 2: that they kind of look like gummy worms. They sort
- 1:37Speaker 2: of had that consistency and it's kind of cool to
- 1:40Speaker 2: watch that happen, especially when they like started like combining
- 1:43Speaker 2: and stuff.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The not many people in the voice cast that you
- 1:47Speaker 2: would know that the mountain Lion is voiced by David
- 1:50Speaker 2: Harbor from Stranger Things.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Two and a half stars for Night at the Zoopocalypse. Alright,
- 1:56Speaker 2: it's playing.
- 1:56Speaker 3: In a few theaters around town. It's like, we can
- 1:58Speaker 3: wait for that one.
- 1:59Speaker 1: You know, this next one. I just watched the preview
- 2:02Speaker 1: for it, the trailer. It looks creepy as hell.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yes, The Rule of Jenny Penn.
- 2:08Speaker 2: This is a suspense siller that's set in a nursing
- 2:10Speaker 2: home in New Zealand. We start with Jeffrey Rush as Stephan,
- 2:15Speaker 2: who is a judge in New Zealand until he has
- 2:18Speaker 2: a stroke while he's he's in the middle of sencing
- 2:20Speaker 2: somebody and he has a stroke on the bench. So
- 2:23Speaker 2: he has to go to a nursing home to recuperate,
- 2:25Speaker 2: and he doesn't get along with the other patients because
- 2:29Speaker 2: he's like, I shouldn't be here.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I'm the judge, you know.
- 2:32Speaker 2: But he realizes that there's somebody in the nursing home
- 2:35Speaker 2: that all the other patients are afraid of, and that's Dave.
- 2:39Speaker 2: He's played by John Lithgow and he seems to be
- 2:42Speaker 2: in advanced stages of all timers. But and he's carrying
- 2:45Speaker 2: a puppet on his hand, the creepy doll head puppet
- 2:49Speaker 2: just walks around with that all day. And the puppet
- 2:51Speaker 2: is named Jenny Penn. So that's oh, yes, okay. And
- 2:56Speaker 2: it doesn't take long for Stephan to figure out that
- 2:58Speaker 2: Dave bullies and Timy dates every other patient in the
- 3:01Speaker 2: nursing home and he and and the staff is clueless.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Staff is too busy to really notice going on. So
- 3:10Speaker 2: and and one of the one of the things that
- 3:12Speaker 2: breaks down in the plotting here is like these these
- 3:14Speaker 2: staff never looks at the surveillance footage.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Ever, you don't pay me enough.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and so so he's not going after Stephan and
- 3:23Speaker 2: starting foul false accusations against him with the staff and
- 3:27Speaker 2: graduating to other forms of teir. This movie has some
- 3:31Speaker 2: good moments. The director his name is James Ashcroft. He
- 3:33Speaker 2: sets up some nice set pieces and good atmosphere of tension.
- 3:37Speaker 2: He kind of missed the delivery on a couple of
- 3:39Speaker 2: the darker moments. The real fun here is watching John
- 3:42Speaker 2: Letcoe and Jeffrey rush sure chew scenery at each other
- 3:46Speaker 2: each other.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It's oh yeah, two great actors.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's a nice sort of back and forth.
- 3:51Speaker 2: There three stars all right for the Rule of Jenny
- 3:53Speaker 2: pen It's playing in a few theaters.
- 3:55Speaker 3: It will be on Shutter in a little while if
- 3:57Speaker 3: you want to wait.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Okay, Mickey seventeen, which I've been telling people about for
- 4:04Speaker 4: months now because it's a great concept.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Right, great concept. There was a novel a couple of
- 4:08Speaker 3: years ago.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Yeah, this is way. This is a science fiction satire.
- 4:12Speaker 2: This is the first movie by Bank June Hoe since Parasite,
- 4:17Speaker 2: since you want all that. It's been about five years
- 4:19Speaker 2: since he won all the Oscars for for Parasite, we
- 4:23Speaker 2: have Mickey.
- 4:25Speaker 3: We meet Mickey.
- 4:25Speaker 2: He's fallen into a crevasse on an ice planet in
- 4:29Speaker 2: the future, and he thinks he's gonna die, which is
- 4:31Speaker 2: not new to him, because this is this is this
- 4:34Speaker 2: will be the se this will be the seventeenth time.
- 4:37Speaker 3: He's done.
- 4:38Speaker 2: He is an expendable, which is a clone of his
- 4:41Speaker 2: original self. He's he's given all the dirtiest, nastiest, most
- 4:46Speaker 2: dangerous jobs, the ones that are largely guaranteed to kill him.
- 4:49Speaker 2: But then every time he dies, they print a new
- 4:51Speaker 2: clone out like a three D printer and and put
- 4:54Speaker 2: his memories in it.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And he's back to where he was.
- 4:57Speaker 2: He's on this colonial UH space craft that's going to
- 5:00Speaker 2: colonize this ice planet. The leader of the ship UH
- 5:04Speaker 2: says it's going to be a paradise because of the
- 5:07Speaker 2: pure human settlers.
- 5:08Speaker 3: This guy is played by Mark Ruffalo.
- 5:11Speaker 2: His blustering here's the thing he plays, This sort of blustering,
- 5:14Speaker 2: not too bright, autocratic leader gives us a good hint
- 5:17Speaker 2: of what villains in movies for the next four years.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Are going to look like, yeah, sets a high bar though,
- 5:24Speaker 2: so the the next few you are going to have
- 5:26Speaker 2: to really come up to be to match what Ruffle
- 5:29Speaker 2: is doing here.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I don't want to get too much into the pot.
- 5:33Speaker 2: The seventeenth version finds something different when he gets back
- 5:36Speaker 2: from the crevass, which is because they thought he had
- 5:39Speaker 2: died in the crevass.
- 5:40Speaker 3: They've already printed up in Amber eighteen. So there's two
- 5:43Speaker 3: of them. There's two of them, which they are not
- 5:44Speaker 3: supposed to have to it. This is this is a comedy. Yes, okay,
- 5:49Speaker 3: it's very funny.
- 5:50Speaker 2: It's very very funny, very sharp sort of takedown of
- 5:53Speaker 2: class divisions in labor. And I mean hoe if you
- 5:56Speaker 2: look at his movies snow Piercer and Parasite, class division.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Is like his thing, that's his jam.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Snow Piercer is just completely that oh yeah, oh yeah,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and and and weird and weird gelatinous foods that came
- 6:10Speaker 1: from places you don't want to know about it.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yes, you've got you know.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So you've got Mickey on one and the sort of
- 6:18Speaker 2: the bottom of the of the food chain, and then
- 6:20Speaker 2: you've got Ruffle's character and his wife played by Tony
- 6:22Speaker 2: Kollette at the other end, and and and everybody else
- 6:26Speaker 2: in the middle who, even though they're not labeled as expendable,
- 6:29Speaker 2: uhly believe what Ruffalo Collet are doing. Everybody's expendable for
- 6:34Speaker 2: the greater good exactly. Boy, this this is frightening me.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Great great comic energy, great futuristic weirdness. The best thing
- 6:41Speaker 2: of all really is Pattinson. I mean, it's it's always
- 6:45Speaker 2: a good reminder of how good an actor Robert Pattinson is.
- 6:48Speaker 3: You forget because of Twilight, Yeah, I mean Twilight. You know,
- 6:51Speaker 3: he was a good vampire. He was a good sparkling vampire.
- 6:55Speaker 2: But how to sparkle. But the thing is that's not
- 6:58Speaker 2: what he was being asked to do. But when he
- 7:02Speaker 2: I mean when he gets hero all in here and
- 7:04Speaker 2: he because he's playing multiple roles, he is playing seventeen
- 7:06Speaker 2: or eighteen of the same the same character and and
- 7:10Speaker 2: doing enough that's different with each one to have, you know,
- 7:12Speaker 2: have some fun with it. It's it's really this is
- 7:15Speaker 2: really really worthwhile. It is it's a little gross, but
- 7:19Speaker 2: it's really good. So three and a half, three and
- 7:21Speaker 2: a half for Mickey Mickey, and it is playing everywhere.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the I think the Broadway has it.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Broadway has it.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I think I think it's pretty widely, pretty widely available.
- 7:31Speaker 4: All right, So Night of the Zoopocalypse two and a
- 7:33Speaker 4: half Rule of Jenny Penn three and Mickey seventeen three
- 7:36Speaker 4: and a half star. Nice.
- 7:38Speaker 3: What do we got next week?
- 7:39Speaker 2: Next week we got Novakane, which is an action comedy
- 7:43Speaker 2: Jack Quaid as a man who can't feel pain and
- 7:45Speaker 2: he has to use that on some bank robbers kidnap
- 7:48Speaker 2: his girlfriend played by Amber mid Thunder from Pratt. Oh, yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 2: I know, we like her. And then we also have
- 7:53Speaker 2: A Black Bag, which is a spy movie directed by
- 7:56Speaker 2: Steven Soderberg, with Michael Fassbender and Kate Blanchett as married
- 8:00Speaker 2: spies who who discover things things about each other.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Does does Stephen Soderberg direct a movie about once a month?
- 8:08Speaker 2: He's he's well, he's had two out and since the
- 8:11Speaker 2: beginning of the year.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's like he just he just has
- 8:15Speaker 1: tons of movies stock up.
- 8:17Speaker 3: He's prolific.
