- 1:04Speaker 1: the body's internal clock. About a week ago, I woke
- 1:09Speaker 1: up in the middle of the night and wondered, what
- 1:11Speaker 1: time is it. It feels like it's about three point fifteen.
- 1:15Speaker 1: So I looked at a clock next to the bed,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and sure enough, it was three point fifteen. I went
- 1:21Speaker 1: back to sleep, woke up again and thought, now it
- 1:24Speaker 1: feels like it's four thirty. So I looked at the clock,
- 1:28Speaker 1: and this time I was about a minute or two off.
- 1:32Speaker 1: An hour later, same thing, felt like five point forty two.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Looked at the clock and it might have been five
- 1:39Speaker 1: forty three. I thought I had strange magical powers until
- 1:43Speaker 1: I mentioned this to a couple of friends and they
- 1:45Speaker 1: said they do the exact same thing, especially if they
- 1:49Speaker 1: have an early morning flight. So I guess my internal
- 1:54Speaker 1: clock is not unique, but I still find it to
- 1:57Speaker 1: be kind of cool. Now let's get to Saturday's preseason finale.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Neither team played at starters in a game that the
- 2:05Speaker 1: Colts won forty one to fourteen. I'm not going to
- 2:09Speaker 1: give it the full highlights treatment this week, but we
- 2:12Speaker 1: will listen back to a few noteworthy plays. The Bengals
- 2:16Speaker 1: quarterback for most of the game was the number three
- 2:18Speaker 1: guy on the depth chart, Desmond Ritter. He's had a
- 2:21Speaker 1: solid camp and a bid to be Cincinnati's practice squad quarterback.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Since the team is likely to only have Joe Burrow
- 2:28Speaker 1: and Jake Browning on the active roster. Unfortunately, it was
- 2:31Speaker 1: not a good afternoon for one of the winningest quarterbacks
- 2:35Speaker 1: in college football history. Second and five, Ritter stumbles while
- 2:39Speaker 1: going back to passes throw intercepted. The Colts are running
- 2:42Speaker 1: it back at the twenty fifteen ten cut back to
- 2:45Speaker 1: the five and a touchdown for safety Daniel Scott's. The
- 2:51Speaker 1: former UC star finished eight for twenty for seventy five
- 2:54Speaker 1: yards with no touchdown passes and that pick six. But
- 2:58Speaker 1: Zach Taylor says Ritter's overall body of work at training
- 3:02Speaker 1: camp has been good.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I was pleased with how he came in, you know,
- 3:05Speaker 2: a day before training camp picked up. The offense, did
- 3:08Speaker 2: a great job trying to affect his teammates, winning into
- 3:10Speaker 2: the quarterback room. Appreciate all that about him, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 2: I know today you'd like it to be a little
- 3:16Speaker 2: bit cleaner in some areas, but appreciate his work that
- 3:19Speaker 2: they appreciate his attitude, Appreciate how he fit in as
- 3:21Speaker 2: a Cincinnati Bengal. And again we'll continue to move on
- 3:24Speaker 2: with him and everybody else.
- 3:25Speaker 1: While it wasn't a good day for Daz, it could
- 3:27Speaker 1: not have gone much better for running back Kendall Milton,
- 3:31Speaker 1: who spent last season on the Bengals practice squad. Bengals
- 3:34Speaker 1: have it second down and five in Colts territory at
- 3:37Speaker 1: the forty six ridder waiting for a shotgun snap. Desmond
- 3:41Speaker 1: Catches sticks it in the belly of Milton.
- 3:43Speaker 3: He's off to the races, eats a safety toward the
- 3:46Speaker 3: far sideline to the tail the five, and he gets
- 3:49Speaker 3: dragged out of bounds near the five by Rodney Thomas.
- 3:53Speaker 1: A big run for Kendall Milton.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Man.
- 3:56Speaker 5: I'll tell you what offensive line did an unbelievable job
- 4:00Speaker 5: right there oft finishing blocks. And the guy who finished
- 4:03Speaker 5: his block the best was Caleb atm and he did
- 4:06Speaker 5: a job at the left tackle position, and Milton abused
- 4:09Speaker 5: the hole that he formed for him and created off
- 4:12Speaker 5: to the races. He went just not fast enough to
- 4:15Speaker 5: take it to the house.
- 4:17Speaker 1: That was a forty one yard run, and Milton finished
- 4:20Speaker 1: with seventy two yards on eight carries. He also had
- 4:23Speaker 1: a thirteen yard run wiped out by a penalty. The
- 4:26Speaker 1: former Georgia Bulldog, who was the Orange Bowl MVP a
- 4:30Speaker 1: few years ago, made a strong case to be the
- 4:32Speaker 1: fourth running back, which will probably be a practice squad position.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I spoke to Milton after the game. Kendall eight carries,
- 4:42Speaker 1: seventy two yards, including a forty one yard run. How
- 4:44Speaker 1: did you feel about your performance and how important was
- 4:48Speaker 1: it for you to put a good game on tape.
- 4:50Speaker 6: You know, I felt pretty good about my performance, you know,
- 4:53Speaker 6: being able to look at the iPads on the sideline,
- 4:55Speaker 6: you know, I was able to see that there was
- 4:56Speaker 6: still some you know, more yards out there. Given I
- 4:59Speaker 6: would hit all the right holes every play, I probably
- 5:01Speaker 6: would have been over one hundred. But you know, all
- 5:03Speaker 6: the credit for that really goes towards a line because
- 5:05Speaker 6: the running back nose out of line can't get too
- 5:07Speaker 6: much done. But you know, especially missing the first game,
- 5:10Speaker 6: I knew that on the back end, you know, I
- 5:12Speaker 6: had to, you know, do something. So I've just been
- 5:14Speaker 6: trying to take as many mental reps as possible during camp,
- 5:17Speaker 6: just making sure that when I have the opportunity that
- 5:20Speaker 6: you know, I'm prepared and you know I'm ready to
- 5:22Speaker 6: where it. There's no type of second thoughts or anything
- 5:24Speaker 6: like that. So you know, I feel like the preparation
- 5:27Speaker 6: kind of just led to this moment.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I think you caught a lot of people's eyes last week.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You didn't have that many carries, but when you did
- 5:32Speaker 1: carry it, your physical running style really stood out. Is
- 5:36Speaker 1: that's something you pride yourself on.
- 5:38Speaker 6: It definitely is. I like to say, I don't like
- 5:40Speaker 6: the first man to be the tackler, So you know,
- 5:43Speaker 6: I try to approach every run just you know, as
- 5:45Speaker 6: long as we you know, move the chains, make a
- 5:47Speaker 6: positive game, that's all that matters.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Describe the forty one yard run and almost taking it
- 5:53Speaker 1: to the house.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Oh, I thought I was gone. I saw the end zone.
- 5:56Speaker 6: I just felt a hand on my back, you know.
- 5:58Speaker 6: But like I said, without the line, without the receivers
- 6:00Speaker 6: doing the extra blocking downfield, you know, that's what really
- 6:03Speaker 6: makes those big runs, those open holes, you know what
- 6:05Speaker 6: I mean. So all their credit for that gift to
- 6:07Speaker 6: the five upfront.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Describe what this camp has been like for you in
- 6:11Speaker 1: a deep and talented room. Chase Brown has obviously emerged
- 6:15Speaker 1: as a great back, so my JP run's got a
- 6:17Speaker 1: proven track record. Taj Brooks is a talented rookie. What's
- 6:20Speaker 1: the competition been like for you?
- 6:21Speaker 6: You know, when you have guys like Chase who you know,
- 6:24Speaker 6: played a full starting season. You have guys like somej
- 6:26Speaker 6: that has years and years in the league under their belt.
- 6:28Speaker 6: You just have to be a sponge in that room
- 6:30Speaker 6: and just take as many, you know, as many tricks
- 6:33Speaker 6: and as many tools that you can put in your
- 6:35Speaker 6: in your toolbox.
- 6:36Speaker 4: You just have to apply it.
- 6:37Speaker 6: And I feel like, you know, spending the time with them,
- 6:39Speaker 6: they taught me a lot. They taught me a lot
- 6:41Speaker 6: of different things about the game, you know, especially mentally,
- 6:43Speaker 6: because that's what a lot of the game is. So
- 6:45Speaker 6: it's been a you know, it's been a really good camp.
- 6:47Speaker 6: There's definitely been moments, you know, where you wish you
- 6:49Speaker 6: had more, you wish you know, you wish this, you
- 6:51Speaker 6: wish that. But you know, at the end of the day,
- 6:53Speaker 6: God's gonna push you in the position when it's when
- 6:55Speaker 6: time's right. So that's what I try to live by.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I don't know what the mix will be between the
- 6:59Speaker 1: fifty three three man roster in the practice squad, but
- 7:01Speaker 1: they're certainly going to be at least four running backs
- 7:05Speaker 1: between the practice squad and the roster. How do you
- 7:07Speaker 1: feel about the case that you've made to remain part
- 7:09Speaker 1: of the team.
- 7:10Speaker 6: You know, I feel good about about my performance. But
- 7:13Speaker 6: you know, at the end of the day, all you
- 7:14Speaker 6: could do is control. You would control, So you know,
- 7:16Speaker 6: I'm leaving in God's hands. You know, I put the
- 7:18Speaker 6: work in. I just let the rest play this off out.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Excellent final game today. Congratulations, thank you, thank you. Getting
- 7:25Speaker 1: back to that forty one yard run, it gave the
- 7:27Speaker 1: Bengals first and goal at the five and set up
- 7:30Speaker 1: their first touchdown. Ridder is going to be under center.
- 7:32Speaker 1: We'll see if they try a quarterback sneak On fourth
- 7:35Speaker 1: and less than a yard, Ridder follows Matt Lee straight ahead. Yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and there's the signal. It's a touchdown for Desmond Ridder
- 7:44Speaker 1: as he scores on the quarterback sneak behind his center
- 7:48Speaker 1: Matt Lee. At that point, it was a close game,
- 7:51Speaker 1: as the Bengals trailed ten to seven, and that was
- 7:54Speaker 1: still the score with less than two minutes to go
- 7:56Speaker 1: in the half. But the Colts controlled the rest of
- 8:00Speaker 1: the game, and this play in the fourth quarter basically
- 8:04Speaker 1: sums up how things went for Cincinnati. Shotgun snap on
- 8:08Speaker 1: third and fifteen. Here comes the rush. Bean begins scrambling.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Right, his pass tipped on the air, intercepted Howard Cross
- 8:14Speaker 3: about grabbing the ricochet after was tipped up in the
- 8:17Speaker 3: air by Isaiah Thomas and the Bengals get a takeaway.
- 8:21Speaker 3: They'll have the ball at the twenty seven of Indianapolis.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Howard Cross did he hold onto the football? He lost
- 8:29Speaker 5: the ball? I guess at the end, but he was
- 8:31Speaker 5: already downs.
- 8:33Speaker 1: He or do the Colts recover his fumble after the interception?
- 8:36Speaker 1: The offense is still on the.
- 8:37Speaker 5: Field, they're staying around there, and the officials are green,
- 8:40Speaker 5: the officials saying first and ten for Indy. So he
- 8:43Speaker 5: did not. He lost the football before his knee hit
- 8:46Speaker 5: the ground.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So an interception and a fumble on the same play.
- 8:52Speaker 1: The Colts had the ball for six minutes and eight
- 8:54Speaker 1: seconds before that play, got a fresh set of downs
- 8:57Speaker 1: after recovering the fumble, and kept the ball for another
- 9:00Speaker 1: four minutes in fifteen seconds. When the Bengals finally got
- 9:04Speaker 1: the ball back with about six minutes left in the game,
- 9:07Speaker 1: fourth string quarterback Peyton Thorn led them on a thirteen
- 9:11Speaker 1: play sixty nine yard touchdown drive or just In Grandy
- 9:15Speaker 1: out to the left, Moore and Owen's out to the right,
- 9:17Speaker 1: shotgun snap back to Thorn hands it off Conley into
- 9:21Speaker 1: the end zone for a Bengals touchdown with thirteen seconds
- 9:25Speaker 1: to go. Rookie Quali Conley with the touchdown run that
- 9:31Speaker 1: made the final score forty one fourteen in favor of
- 9:34Speaker 1: the Colts. Here's Zach Taylor with an overview of training
- 9:38Speaker 1: camp and the preseason.
- 9:40Speaker 2: I thought we got all the work done that we
- 9:41Speaker 2: need to get done. I really feel good. I like
- 9:43Speaker 2: where we're at from a health standpoint. I like where
- 9:45Speaker 2: we're at from an install standpoint, our key guys understanding
- 9:49Speaker 2: what we're trying to get, what our ten is. And
- 9:51Speaker 2: so I feel really good as a football team where
- 9:53Speaker 2: we're at right now. And so now we'll get a
- 9:54Speaker 2: chance next week with a bonus week to get ahead,
- 9:57Speaker 2: start on Cleveland, and then next week really get after it.
- 10:00Speaker 1: The Bengals have until Tuesday at four o'clock to cut
- 10:03Speaker 1: the roster down to fifty three players. The guys that
- 10:06Speaker 1: don't make it can be claimed by other teams. Then
- 10:10Speaker 1: the following day, the Bengals can name a sixteen man
- 10:13Speaker 1: practice squad. Coach Taylor says the tape from that final
- 10:17Speaker 1: preseason game can impact decisions.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, today's meaningful, you know, And so again we'll sess
- 10:23Speaker 2: the tape, we'll have final conversations tomorrow Monday on where
- 10:26Speaker 2: we want to go. And there's probably been a lot
- 10:30Speaker 2: of moments in my career where a guy has made
- 10:31Speaker 2: a solidifying impression on the final preseason game or maybe
- 10:36Speaker 2: your decisions going the other way. So again, we'll just
- 10:38Speaker 2: watch it all, evaluate it and see if any of
- 10:40Speaker 2: that happened for us.
- 10:41Speaker 1: A year ago, Muma johng Meta made the team as
- 10:43Speaker 1: an undrafted free agent after a stellar preseason. Now he's
- 10:48Speaker 1: looking to stay on the roster or at least the
- 10:50Speaker 1: practice squad and led the team with eleven tackles against Indianapolis.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Score obviously was not what you guys were hoping for,
- 10:58Speaker 1: But you had eleven tackles. How did you feel about
- 11:00Speaker 1: your performance and how important did you feel the game
- 11:03Speaker 1: was for you today?
- 11:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean there's a lot of guys out there
- 11:06Speaker 7: find for a roster spot, myself included, and for me,
- 11:10Speaker 7: it was just about going out there competing with the guys,
- 11:13Speaker 7: having you know, competing with great technique, great eyes, and
- 11:17Speaker 7: executing my job at a high level. You know, the
- 11:20Speaker 7: satelline is deceiving. I know I had eleven tackles, but
- 11:23Speaker 7: I think there's a lot that I have to grow
- 11:24Speaker 7: from and kind of lost my conditioning towards the end,
- 11:27Speaker 7: and there I was exhausted. So I just got to
- 11:30Speaker 7: work on that. But you know, felt like I got
- 11:33Speaker 7: better today as a player and as a leader, and
- 11:35Speaker 7: that's that's all you can ask for.
- 11:37Speaker 1: There was a stretch where they had a thirteen play drive.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You guys had an interception and unfortunately fumbled it back
- 11:42Speaker 1: and then they had another time consuming drive. Is that
- 11:45Speaker 1: when it was really taxing physically.
- 11:48Speaker 7: Now, I wasn't.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Disbelieved when I saw that.
- 11:52Speaker 7: I've never seen that my life. I mean, that was
- 11:55Speaker 7: that was just that's just the game. And you just
- 11:57Speaker 7: you know, you know, it's one of those like you
- 11:59Speaker 7: pray for reps and then boom, guys like now you
- 12:01Speaker 7: see me now you don't so uh when it rains
- 12:05Speaker 7: a poor So it was a lot of rap f
- 12:07Speaker 7: for it was good. It was really fun out there
- 12:08Speaker 7: and just you know, anytime you'll get an opportunity to
- 12:11Speaker 7: play in the uniform, in the for the shield, you know,
- 12:14Speaker 7: it's a great It's a great day.
- 12:15Speaker 1: So we're visiting with moment. John Matta, the linebacking crew
- 12:19Speaker 1: has performed very well this training camp. It's a deep
- 12:22Speaker 1: group and it seems like one guy after another has
- 12:25Speaker 1: had a good camp. Yourself included.
- 12:27Speaker 7: Yeah, you know, I'm just honored to be in a
- 12:29Speaker 7: room like this. From the top down, guys like Logan,
- 12:33Speaker 7: ob Joe Giles, Harris, they kind of set the tempos
- 12:36Speaker 7: as vets and they set the standard. And honestly, credit
- 12:40Speaker 7: to the rookies for rising to that standard. Credit to
- 12:42Speaker 7: coach Hodges who's been coaching his butt off, Credit to
- 12:45Speaker 7: guys like Shaka shown.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Up and and just improving.
- 12:48Speaker 7: It's been really fun. It's been a fun room to
- 12:49Speaker 7: be a part of. It was a really fun camp
- 12:52Speaker 7: for me. I felt like I grew a lot as
- 12:54Speaker 7: a person, a lot as a player.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It was.
- 12:57Speaker 7: It is a really deep room. It's and honestly rising ties, lifts,
- 13:01Speaker 7: all boats and iron sharpman's iron. I feel like I
- 13:03Speaker 7: got better just being in a room with people that good.
- 13:06Speaker 5: So there's a real.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Honor from me. You had a great preseason last year,
- 13:10Speaker 1: second in the NFL and tackles made the team, played
- 13:13Speaker 1: in every game, big role on special teams. How stressful
- 13:18Speaker 1: will the next few days be for you.
- 13:20Speaker 7: Uh, you know, at this point it's already written. I've
- 13:22Speaker 7: done what I could control and told myself, hey, I'm
- 13:25Speaker 7: gonna get better every day in camp. I'm gonna, you know,
- 13:28Speaker 7: the playbook, and now I'm improve my technique. I'm gonna
- 13:30Speaker 7: prove my eyes and I'm gonna work on the part
- 13:34Speaker 7: that I can work on. I'm gonna continue to contribute
- 13:35Speaker 7: on special teams and we'll just see what happens after that.
- 13:38Speaker 7: So not much stress, as much of just you know,
- 13:42Speaker 7: letting letting God do what he does, and just a
- 13:44Speaker 7: lot of gratitude to even be here, have this opportunity.
- 13:47Speaker 1: So season begins two weeks from tomorrow. How eager is
- 13:50Speaker 1: the defense to show what it can do in games
- 13:52Speaker 1: that count?
- 13:54Speaker 4: Uh?
- 13:55Speaker 7: Very eager, I think, uh people people are on Twitter
- 13:59Speaker 7: with a lot of opinions, and it'll be interesting to
- 14:03Speaker 7: really show people what we can do. It's been a
- 14:05Speaker 7: great camp. I'll see what the guys can do and
- 14:07Speaker 7: so I'm excited for.
- 14:08Speaker 1: That at the moment, I appreciate your time, best of luck,
- 14:10Speaker 1: Thank you, appreciation. John Metta is an easy guy to
- 14:14Speaker 1: root for and a tough name to spell. The Bengals

- 14:34Speaker 1: the official healthcare provider of the Bengals. Now time for
- 14:38Speaker 1: the radio guys recap, no sugarcoating it. Final score is
- 14:43Speaker 1: disappointing forty one fourteen. The starters didn't play. I'm not
- 14:47Speaker 1: going to overreact, but it's one of those things where
- 14:50Speaker 1: the players always talk about you are what you put
- 14:53Speaker 1: on tape, and unfortunately the second and third string guys
- 14:56Speaker 1: did not put very much good tape out there for
- 14:59Speaker 1: others to see.
- 15:00Speaker 5: I think they're very disappointed, Dan, I know I would
- 15:02Speaker 5: be if I'm a rookie player and getting an opportunity
- 15:06Speaker 5: in that third preseason game to show my best, to
- 15:09Speaker 5: show what I got going against whoever the Colts put
- 15:12Speaker 5: out there. It's my opportunity to show that I belong
- 15:15Speaker 5: in the National Football League and I can be a
- 15:18Speaker 5: player in the National Football League, and you should want
- 15:21Speaker 5: to work with me and develop me into a player
- 15:23Speaker 5: in the National Football League. You know, my grass going up.
- 15:26Speaker 5: I'm getting better every week. You know, I haven't plateaued
- 15:29Speaker 5: or I'm not falling off a cliff like you don't
- 15:32Speaker 5: want to have happened. And for a lot of those
- 15:36Speaker 5: young guys, the performance they put on tape didn't equate
- 15:39Speaker 5: to that. I mean, I just did not play very well.
- 15:43Speaker 5: I don't think it was for lack of effort or
- 15:46Speaker 5: you know, lack of want to. I think they probably
- 15:49Speaker 5: maybe want to do a little bit more than they
- 15:53Speaker 5: actually performed. And that's an obvious statement. I mean, they
- 15:57Speaker 5: just they weren't where they were supposed to be when
- 15:59Speaker 5: they were supposed to be. They're doing what they're supposed
- 16:01Speaker 5: to do. And when you know that happens in the
- 16:03Speaker 5: National Football League, you can be taking advantage of a
- 16:07Speaker 5: big time In some instance, his guys were.
- 16:10Speaker 1: I was hoping that Desmond Ritter would have a great
- 16:12Speaker 1: game lock up his status as the number three quarterback
- 16:15Speaker 1: on this roster. I get the sense that they're really
- 16:17Speaker 1: happy with what he's done in training camp. I don't
- 16:20Speaker 1: think eight for twenty for seventy five yards and a
- 16:23Speaker 1: pick six is really going to count that much against them,
- 16:26Speaker 1: But it would have been nice for him to go
- 16:28Speaker 1: out there getting to play quite a bit and really perform. Well.
- 16:31Speaker 5: Yeah, I think he could have slammed the door on
- 16:33Speaker 5: any question about it, and so now you know, maybe
- 16:36Speaker 5: the door's like, really, do you think? I'm with you?
- 16:41Speaker 5: I think he should be a Cincinnati Bengals With the
- 16:44Speaker 5: Cincinnati Bengals, I think that it's something that he would
- 16:49Speaker 5: he has probably aspired to be for a while. I
- 16:52Speaker 5: think if there's a team in the National Football League
- 16:55Speaker 5: that he would want to be a part of, Cincinnati
- 16:56Speaker 5: would be right up there. In terms of being able
- 17:00Speaker 5: to play in front of people that he knows, family, friends,
- 17:04Speaker 5: you know, that's always big, particularly to a young player.
- 17:08Speaker 5: To be able to have that kind of support system,
- 17:10Speaker 5: I think is a big factor. I think he comes
- 17:13Speaker 5: from a good family. I know he's a great kid.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I know you know a lot about him, and I
- 17:16Speaker 5: know you're extremely high on him as a person. So
- 17:18Speaker 5: that's good enough for me. If somebody, if Dan Horde
- 17:21Speaker 5: says somebody is the real deal and legit, I'm all in,
- 17:24Speaker 5: I'm right with you. So yeah, hopefully he has done
- 17:29Speaker 5: enough to make the football team because I think that
- 17:33Speaker 5: guys respect him. I think he's earned and generated some
- 17:36Speaker 5: respect already, and it's impossible not to like the guy.
- 17:40Speaker 5: I mean, all he does is go out and do
- 17:41Speaker 5: what he's supposed to do, when he's supposed to do it,
- 17:43Speaker 5: how he's supposed to do it. He's one of those
- 17:47Speaker 5: great guys that from a personality standpoint and the way
- 17:51Speaker 5: he carries himself, it would be a phenomenal teammate.
- 17:55Speaker 1: I think if anybody really helped himself in the game today,
- 17:59Speaker 1: it would be running back Kendall Milton. I think that
- 18:01Speaker 1: Kendall Milton and Gary Brightwell were probably running neck and
- 18:05Speaker 1: neck to be the number four running back on the roster.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Gary gives you a little more kick return, so that
- 18:11Speaker 1: helps him a little more in the special teams area.
- 18:13Speaker 1: But Kendall Milton looked terrific running the ball.
- 18:16Speaker 5: He did Dan. I mean, it looks like the best
- 18:18Speaker 5: running back on the field and it's including everybody. And
- 18:22Speaker 5: I think he also does a good job as a receiver.
- 18:25Speaker 5: Runs good routes, can make violent cuts, get separation, cast
- 18:31Speaker 5: the football, secure it, put it away, get yards after catch,
- 18:34Speaker 5: sticks his nose in there and blitz pick up. Not
- 18:36Speaker 5: the least a bit bashful of shy about that kind
- 18:38Speaker 5: of contact. So this guy, I mean, I think he's
- 18:43Speaker 5: a weapon. He's a tool short yard his goal line.
- 18:46Speaker 5: That's a guy that has a nose for getting north
- 18:48Speaker 5: and south and finding where he needs to get to.
- 18:52Speaker 5: I could see him having a role in that alone.
- 18:57Speaker 5: Not to say the others can't and the others won't,
- 18:59Speaker 5: but I think I think Milton makes the football team.
- 19:02Speaker 5: I agree with you.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Dejon Anthony exited with what appeared to be a sore hamstring.
- 19:08Speaker 1: He was holding the back of his right leg when
- 19:09Speaker 1: he walked toward the locker room. Safety depth was already
- 19:12Speaker 1: a bit of an issue now Gino Stone started practicing
- 19:15Speaker 1: again this week, so that's good. I think he'll be
- 19:17Speaker 1: fine for the Cleveland game. But if Dejon Anthony is out,
- 19:22Speaker 1: then PJ. Jewles probably steps into one of the spots.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Is one of the primary backup safeties right along with
- 19:29Speaker 1: Tyson Anderson.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Yeah, I agree with you. I think those two guys
- 19:32Speaker 5: are I think you've hit right on two guys that
- 19:35Speaker 5: may in the early stages of the season, particularly in
- 19:38Speaker 5: the opener, they have a bigger role than they thought
- 19:41Speaker 5: they might have, you know, and so it's up to
- 19:44Speaker 5: everybody involved to get them ready themselves most importantly, and coaches,
- 19:49Speaker 5: head coach, position, coach, organizationally, everybody you know, get get
- 19:54Speaker 5: behind him and you know, kind of boy, you know,
- 19:59Speaker 5: lift him up a little bit so he feels like,
- 20:02Speaker 5: you know, people trust him, respect him, think he can
- 20:06Speaker 5: do a job, and kind of ease his mind where
- 20:09Speaker 5: he can put forth the type of forms you're going
- 20:11Speaker 5: to need in that opener. So it's going to be
- 20:15Speaker 5: interesting to see, you know, in week one, how offenses
- 20:20Speaker 5: how quickly they adjust to what Al Golden might be doing.
- 20:23Speaker 5: Because Al Golden me runs something out there that he
- 20:26Speaker 5: hasn't shown yet, there's a good ship. I would not
- 20:29Speaker 5: be shocked. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised. He runs
- 20:32Speaker 5: a couple of three things out there package wise that
- 20:34Speaker 5: he hasn't shown yet from a personnel standpoint and a
- 20:37Speaker 5: configuration alignment and all that. So opening a regular season
- 20:42Speaker 5: game could be a totally different dynamic than what we've
- 20:45Speaker 5: seen so far in the preseason.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Defensively, it's fifteen days away. I'm excited. I'm eager to
- 20:51Speaker 1: see if the defense looks as good in a regular game.
- 20:54Speaker 1: With what you were just talking about, with Al Golden
- 20:57Speaker 1: having the full bag of tricks at his disposal. It's
- 21:00Speaker 1: looked for the most part in practice.
- 21:02Speaker 5: I agree in practice. I mean, you look at this
- 21:05Speaker 5: defense in practice and you say, I don't know about
- 21:09Speaker 5: top ten, but top twelve to top fifteen. I could
- 21:12Speaker 5: see that. I could see this defense putting up those
- 21:15Speaker 5: kind of numbers and playing to that level where there
- 21:17Speaker 5: are top twelve defense in the National Football League. And
- 21:20Speaker 5: if they play like that, if they show that right
- 21:23Speaker 5: away in the early stages of the NFL season, Ben's
- 21:27Speaker 5: gonna win and run away and hide from everybody.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Man.
- 21:30Speaker 5: I think when the division and the landslide, I don't
- 21:33Speaker 5: think anybody anybody challenges them.
- 21:36Speaker 1: The Ravens might have something to say about that, but
- 21:39Speaker 1: I agree with Lapp's premise. If the defense looks as
- 21:42Speaker 1: good as it did on most days at training camp,
- 21:46Speaker 1: it should be a great season that puts a rap
- 21:49Speaker 1: on the Indianapolis game. Now time for this week's fun
- 21:53Speaker 1: fact segment. Nate Brooks is a study in perseverance. He's
- 21:58Speaker 1: been cut thirteen times by eight different NFL teams, bouncing
- 22:03Speaker 1: from training camps to practice squads while also playing in
- 22:06Speaker 1: the USFL and the UFL. But the twenty eight year
- 22:10Speaker 1: old cornerback is still playing and was on the Bengals
- 22:13Speaker 1: practice squad all of last year. Let's get to know
- 22:17Speaker 1: the person under the pads. Time for some fun facts
- 22:21Speaker 1: with cornerback Nate Brooks from White House, Texas, which is
- 22:26Speaker 1: the hometown of Patrick Mahomes. You two guys were buddies
- 22:30Speaker 1: growing up. Correct, Yeah, we we were.
- 22:32Speaker 4: We went to school for he was a year older
- 22:34Speaker 4: than me, so we were in school for about three
- 22:36Speaker 4: years ago.
- 22:37Speaker 1: When you signed with the Bengals prior to last year,
- 22:39Speaker 1: he tweeted, let's go with a couple of flexing biceps.
- 22:44Speaker 1: What's it been like for you to see this childhood
- 22:47Speaker 1: buddy win three Super Bowls and a couple of MVPs.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Uh, It's kind of surreal just seeing where he came from.
- 22:54Speaker 4: We came from the same spot, very low recruited, and
- 22:58Speaker 4: to see how his career elevated is kind of crazy.
- 23:01Speaker 4: But very proud of them, just like everybody else back home.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Very proud to have known him, played with him, and
- 23:10Speaker 4: then see what he's doing. Now.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Does Joe Burrow know about this connection?
- 23:14Speaker 4: I don't know. I kind of keep it low key,
- 23:17Speaker 4: so I don't really tell anybody until someone finds out.
- 23:21Speaker 1: But I don't know. I hope not. I'm ruining a secret. Yeah,
- 23:27Speaker 1: we're doing fun facts with Nate Brooks. Tell me a
- 23:29Speaker 1: little bit about growing up in white House. What was
- 23:32Speaker 1: your childhood like.
- 23:33Speaker 4: So white Houses in East Texas very I'd say more
- 23:38Speaker 4: country than what people would think. Grew up outside, just
- 23:42Speaker 4: playing sports all around. Small city, so you know everybody,
- 23:47Speaker 4: everybody knows everybody. I would say it's a football town,
- 23:52Speaker 4: but we're more of a baseball, basketball town, you know
- 23:55Speaker 4: what I mean. But we did pack out some of
- 23:57Speaker 4: those games in high school for sure. But it was
- 24:00Speaker 4: a great experience. Like I said, every time I go home,
- 24:04Speaker 4: it's always support from everybody. Everybody's hitting me up on
- 24:07Speaker 4: Instagram and stuff, always showing support. But it's always love
- 24:10Speaker 4: when we go back home.
- 24:12Speaker 1: After graduating from white House High you went to the
- 24:15Speaker 1: University of North Texas playing for the Me and Green
- 24:17Speaker 1: for four years. You had ten interceptions while you were there.
- 24:20Speaker 1: When did you start thinking that a career in pro
- 24:23Speaker 1: football was a realistic possibility.
- 24:26Speaker 4: I wouldn't say I was thinking it was realistic, but
- 24:28Speaker 4: my freshman year I had to coach give a pregame speech.
- 24:32Speaker 4: We were playing like some SEC team. They were paying
- 24:34Speaker 4: us to come play, but he gave a pregame speech
- 24:37Speaker 4: that kind of just changed my own mentality. I didn't
- 24:39Speaker 4: play a lick that game at all, but he just
- 24:41Speaker 4: gave me just the chills and what he was saying,
- 24:45Speaker 4: how I could change my life, change my family's life.
- 24:47Speaker 4: And I think from that point on my freshman year,
- 24:50Speaker 4: I was like, I want to go to the NFL.
- 24:53Speaker 4: And then after my sophomore year, I think I had
- 24:55Speaker 4: a great season. I was actually trying to come out
- 24:57Speaker 4: my junior year and then ended up battling some injuries
- 25:00Speaker 4: my junior year and had to stay my senior year.
- 25:02Speaker 4: But it ended up perfectly.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Honestly. It must have been a powerful speech. Yeah, it was.
- 25:07Speaker 4: It was coach Perry Carter. I think he's coaching in
- 25:10Speaker 4: the league. Actually he actually coached fig in college two
- 25:13Speaker 4: so yeah, great man. I mean, he played in the league,
- 25:17Speaker 4: he was All American at his college, and just he
- 25:22Speaker 4: poured into us that pregame speech. And I mean, I'll
- 25:25Speaker 4: never forget that.
- 25:27Speaker 1: We're visiting with Nate Brooks. You went to your first
- 25:29Speaker 1: NFL training camp with the Cardinals in twenty nineteen. Then
- 25:33Speaker 1: you spent time on the Patriots practice squad that year,
- 25:36Speaker 1: and then in December of your rookie year, Miami snatched
- 25:39Speaker 1: you off the Patriots practice squad and you started less
- 25:44Speaker 1: than a week later. How big were the Butterflies?
- 25:47Speaker 4: Uh? I don't think the butterflies really hit until maybe
- 25:51Speaker 4: pre game. So they brought me in and they were like, oh, yeah,
- 25:53Speaker 4: we're just gonna give you maybe twenty snaps this game,
- 25:56Speaker 4: just to get your feet wet, and then next week
- 25:58Speaker 4: we'll throw you in there. But pregame, coach Chuck, who's
- 26:01Speaker 4: actually Coach Burks, he came to be pregame tap me
- 26:05Speaker 4: and was like, oh, yeah, you're starting, And that's when
- 26:07Speaker 4: stuff kind of kind of got a little surreal. I
- 26:10Speaker 4: was like, Okay, now I'm a little nervous now going
- 26:13Speaker 4: against Eli. I think it was Eli's last home game
- 26:16Speaker 4: in New York. Yeah, but I was definitely a legitary
- 26:19Speaker 4: and it kind of showed a little bit in a play,
- 26:22Speaker 4: but we calmed down those next two games.
- 26:25Speaker 1: So You've had a long connection with Coach Burks.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Coach Burks is a great man on and off the field,
- 26:31Speaker 4: somebody I could come to with anything. Football wise or
- 26:35Speaker 4: anything off the field wise, just sit down and have
- 26:38Speaker 4: fellowship and talk about life. So he's a great leader
- 26:42Speaker 4: of men, somebody I respect very well and I'm thankful
- 26:47Speaker 4: to be here with him.
- 26:49Speaker 1: We're trying to with Nate Brooks. He played in three
- 26:51Speaker 1: games for the Dolphins your rookie year and then in
- 26:54Speaker 1: a game for Baltimore the following year, and that game
- 26:57Speaker 1: was here. It was in Cincinnati final game of the
- 26:59Speaker 1: regular season. It was a lopsided Baltimore win, unfortunately. But
- 27:03Speaker 1: does anything stand out about that experience of playing here
- 27:07Speaker 1: back in twenty twenty.
- 27:08Speaker 4: I remember being here. I also remember it was the
- 27:11Speaker 4: COVID year, so there weren't many fans. So last year
- 27:15Speaker 4: when I actually got to walk out into the stadium
- 27:18Speaker 4: like first home game and actually experience I was like, Wow,
- 27:21Speaker 4: I've never I guess I've never played here before. It
- 27:24Speaker 4: felt completely different. But yeah, just being on that field again,
- 27:28Speaker 4: it kind of feels comfortable. I've played here. I played
- 27:32Speaker 4: very well here when I played with Baltimore, but yeah,
- 27:34Speaker 4: it feels comfortable here.
- 27:36Speaker 1: You've been with a few different NFL teams since on
- 27:39Speaker 1: practice squads, including the Bengals last year, but you also
- 27:42Speaker 1: played in the USFL with Birmingham in twenty twenty three,
- 27:45Speaker 1: in the UFL with Michigan in twenty twenty four. That
- 27:49Speaker 1: Birmingham team won the championship. It's not the super Bowl,
- 27:53Speaker 1: but it's still a big deal. What did that experience
- 27:56Speaker 1: mean to you?
- 27:59Speaker 4: Just where I was in my career, where I was
- 28:01Speaker 4: in my my journey, Uh, it meant a lot. I
- 28:04Speaker 4: actually got to play some what I what I consider
- 28:06Speaker 4: meaningful ball, meaningful snaps, got to be a part of
- 28:11Speaker 4: game planning every week, and then just becoming like that
- 28:15Speaker 4: team number one corner. It meant a lot to me
- 28:19Speaker 4: and it's kind of built up my confidence to get
- 28:23Speaker 4: me back to where I am today back in the league.
- 28:25Speaker 4: So being with that that Birmingham team I made, I
- 28:28Speaker 4: made a lot of a lot of friends, a lot
- 28:30Speaker 4: of lifelong friends I still talk to today. I still connect
- 28:33Speaker 4: with the coaches that were there. But yeah, that that
- 28:36Speaker 4: championship meant a lot to me and meant a lot
- 28:38Speaker 4: to my my pops and my family.
- 28:41Speaker 1: By NFL accounting purposes, you're listed as having one year experience,
- 28:46Speaker 1: but you've been playing pro football now for seven years.
- 28:49Speaker 1: What's been the key to your perseverance.
- 28:52Speaker 4: I think I've been doubted all my life. So I
- 28:56Speaker 4: just wake up every day and say, I know, I
- 28:58Speaker 4: know what I'm supposed to be doing. I feel like
- 29:01Speaker 4: I'm supposed to be an NFL player, not feel like
- 29:04Speaker 4: I know I'm supposed to be a NFL player. So
- 29:06Speaker 4: just waking up with that confidence every day, looks myself
- 29:09Speaker 4: in the mirror, knowing I can't play at this level,
- 29:11Speaker 4: that I can do this, I can play with anybody
- 29:13Speaker 4: at this level. That's been the main thing. I mean.
- 29:17Speaker 4: I've had some low points, obviously when teams aren't calling
- 29:21Speaker 4: and I had to go play Spring League. But just
- 29:24Speaker 4: waking up and telling myself that every morning has been
- 29:28Speaker 4: the key to my persevering.
- 29:30Speaker 1: You were with this team all of last year, practicing
- 29:33Speaker 1: every day. You're one of the guys, you're part of
- 29:35Speaker 1: the team. What have you enjoyed about being a Cincinnati
- 29:38Speaker 1: Bengal Ah.
- 29:41Speaker 4: It's a lot of love here within the locker room,
- 29:44Speaker 4: within the city. Wherever you go in the city, somebody's
- 29:48Speaker 4: gonna hood ay you, you know what I mean. And
- 29:50Speaker 4: then the locker room, it's just a band of brothers.
- 29:53Speaker 4: My dB group, we're pretty close knit. We joke around.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Laugh.
- 29:58Speaker 4: They made a joke recently that I as soon as
- 30:00Speaker 4: I joined the team, I just came right in and
- 30:02Speaker 4: acted like I've been here before for years. So they
- 30:05Speaker 4: made it very welcoming for me to be here. And
- 30:07Speaker 4: even Coach Taylor and all the other coaches just very welcoming.
- 30:12Speaker 4: They come to me, you know, fill you with confidence.
- 30:15Speaker 4: They ask you questions. I can pick their brands and
- 30:18Speaker 4: stuff like that. Even with Jamar and t and m
- 30:21Speaker 4: I'm asking them what they see why they do this,
- 30:24Speaker 4: And that is just very welcoming, and I mean it's
- 30:28Speaker 4: it's helped me developing the last year for sure.
- 30:31Speaker 1: All Right, a few wild card topics to wrap things
- 30:33Speaker 1: up with Bengals cornerback Nate Brooks. Has anybody ever told
- 30:37Speaker 1: you that you look a bit like Tyler Boyd?
- 30:42Speaker 4: I've gotten a couple of looking lives. I think that's
- 30:44Speaker 4: the first Tyler Boyd for sure. I've gotten a couple
- 30:46Speaker 4: of look a likes.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Who do other people say?
- 30:49Speaker 4: Last week somebody said I looked like Jamar. I've gotten
- 30:55Speaker 4: like one of the Wayne's brothers. I've got I've gotten
- 30:59Speaker 4: a couple of look.
- 30:59Speaker 1: At all right, So I've thrown Tyler a boyd into
- 31:02Speaker 1: the mix. You're about to become a dad for the
- 31:04Speaker 1: second time, correct.
- 31:05Speaker 4: Yes, sir, Yes, sir. I think we're doing September around
- 31:09Speaker 4: the second game another boy. So we're just adding to
- 31:14Speaker 4: the roster right now.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Based on your Instagram profile, you're involved in a clothing line.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Is that the case?
- 31:23Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 31:23Speaker 4: I just did some modeling for one of the guys
- 31:26Speaker 4: I used to train with, Shout out Colin and Nameless.
- 31:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:29Speaker 4: I did a little model a little random modeling gig
- 31:34Speaker 4: and just trying to help him get some exposure with
- 31:36Speaker 4: his brand. I mean, it's a great brands brand, Nameless,
- 31:39Speaker 4: Nameless Gallery. So just trying to help him out with
- 31:43Speaker 4: whatever I can.
- 31:44Speaker 1: All right, So if Nameless sells a bunch of stuff,
- 31:47Speaker 1: model Nate Brooks is going to get some of the credit.
- 31:50Speaker 1: Aside from football, Do you have any talents?
- 31:53Speaker 4: I'm alright at golf. I did one dabble there, but
- 31:58Speaker 4: all I do is football and be a dad and husband.
- 32:01Speaker 1: That's the most important job of all right, right, all right,
- 32:05Speaker 1: final fun fact for Nate Brooks. This one's kind of deep.
- 32:08Speaker 1: If you could meet anyone in history, living or deceased,
- 32:14Speaker 1: who would that person be.
- 32:17Speaker 4: I think because this is on the top of my brain.
- 32:19Speaker 4: We talked about this in the cafeteria Michael Jackson. Just
- 32:22Speaker 4: because the stories I've heard of people feigning when they
- 32:27Speaker 4: see him, or he just standing there and people falling out.
- 32:29Speaker 4: I think I would like to meet him.
- 32:32Speaker 1: It's amazing, isn't it. When his music comes on, you
- 32:35Speaker 1: still instantaneously like get into the groove. His talent was unbelievable, timeless, timeless.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I mean I wasn't. That wasn't even my era growing up,
- 32:45Speaker 4: but we grew up playing the little Wei game that
- 32:49Speaker 4: Michael Jackson experience. And then of course all of my
- 32:51Speaker 4: aunts said, mom, they loved him. So I'd like to
- 32:55Speaker 4: meet Michael Jackson.
- 32:55Speaker 1: I'd say that, all right, you're off the hot seat.
