- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:45SPEAKER_05: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall is back, baby.
- 0:50SPEAKER_05: What is up, Tristan?
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: I have returned for my hiatus.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: Though I thought it was going to be indefinite with how well you did on your solo podcast.
- 1:02SPEAKER_04: Way to drive the ship solo there.
- 1:04SPEAKER_05: I appreciate that.
- 1:05SPEAKER_05: I considered not inviting you back.
- 1:07SPEAKER_05: I was like, well, you know, I enjoyed this so much.
- 1:10SPEAKER_05: I was like, I like not looking at your face.
- 1:13SPEAKER_05: I like, you know, I just like not talking to you.
- 1:16SPEAKER_04: I was about to say the same thing.
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: I was about to say, you know, I might take him up on that offer for the fact that I don't have to see your bug every single week.
- 1:23SPEAKER_04: But can I please say that we smoked the pirate?
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: I didn't get to say it last week, and I would just like to say my piece that we smoked the pirate, the curse is done, and I don't want to hear that we're never going to be good without Mike Leach ever again because I don't want him now.
- 1:39SPEAKER_04: I don't want him as our head coach now.
- 1:41SPEAKER_04: So especially after that.
- 1:43SPEAKER_04: So uh thank God we we we shook it off, and Sonny Cumby is a legend forever.
- 1:47SPEAKER_04: I know y'all heard all this last week, but uh it's not fair that I don't get to say it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_05: No, you deserve it.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: I'm glad you said your piece.
- 1:54SPEAKER_05: Everything you said is straight facts.
- 1:56SPEAKER_05: Why would we want Mike Leach when we just had Sonny Cumbie who just wrecked him?
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, and now we have Jody McGuire who would do the same thing.
- 2:04SPEAKER_05: So uh, but yeah, Liberty Bowl was fun, but we got some other stuff we're talking about this week.
- 2:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, a lot of basketball on the docket.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: We're gonna talk a little uh football returners that have announced that they're gonna come back for next season, and then we're gonna give you a big old year in review, 2021.
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: This is our first episode of 2022, so we thought we'd recap some good things that happened for Texas Tech in 2021, and then we are giving you a funny song of the week.
- 2:31SPEAKER_05: Uh Ha ha, you know, we're hilarious.
- 2:33SPEAKER_04: So, you know, yeah, break it in the new year with a little uh with a little levity, a little humor, a little humor, a good word.
- 2:38SPEAKER_05: Wait a minute, thank you.
- 2:40SPEAKER_05: Look at that.
- 2:41SPEAKER_05: But you know what we should we need to start off with the best game of last night, and that was Texas Tech women's basketball upsetting the Longhorns in Austin, the number nine ranked Longhorns in Austin.
- 2:56SPEAKER_05: This is the ladies' first win since 2013 in Austin.
- 3:00SPEAKER_05: Uh, tech win 74-61.
- 3:02SPEAKER_05: Huge game for the Lady Raiders.
- 3:05SPEAKER_05: This was massive.
- 3:07SPEAKER_05: My sir, we didn't just win, dude.
- 3:09SPEAKER_04: Double digits, yeah, and we controlled the game practically the whole time.
- 3:14SPEAKER_04: Like it was on our hands the whole time.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: Our our our head coach, Kristen Gerlich, who's always tripping, she always brings it outfit-wise.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: And dude, she just took it to him in Austin.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Good to see in that flan.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: Nothing, no, nothing good can happen there, but Texas Tech winning.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: That's all I gotta say.
- 3:32SPEAKER_05: That was the last time the Lady Raiders are gonna play in the concrete flan, known as the Frank Irwin Center.
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: So Texas Tech won the last game ever there against the Longhorns.
- 3:42SPEAKER_05: So shouts out to them, Vivian Gray.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: Vivian Gray, man, 23 points.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: She is so good.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: Bramber Scott added 21 points as well.
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: Taylor Thomas with a double double, 12 points at 13 boards.
- 3:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, that was the best Lady Raider basketball I've ever seen from this team.
- 4:00SPEAKER_04: I'm really hoping that this is the kind of brand of basketball you get out of our new head coach.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: You know, this is season number two, season number one's kind of that first initial off-the-block sort of sort of season, and now we're starting to see her kind of build something up here.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: So I really hope we hang on to her and just kind of build off of stuff like this because this is a huge victory.
- 4:18SPEAKER_04: This is one of those things that you, as a program, you want nothing more than to beat some someone like the Longhorns in the concrete plan.
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: So, man, it's just feels so good.
- 4:27SPEAKER_04: I can't stop thinking about it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_05: Well, and to get it so early in conference play, too, was really cool.
- 4:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because it builds momentum, and you take these types of wins and you just build off of them, keep winning these games that you technically shouldn't, but you know, you get one upset, and then your team gets some some momentum going for them.
- 4:45SPEAKER_05: So uh this was huge, and against the top 10 ranked opponent, you know, that's always good.
- 4:49SPEAKER_05: Um, but the real story of this game, Krista Gerlich and uh old longhorn old man coach Vic Schaefer getting into it uh at the beginning of the second half.
- 5:01SPEAKER_05: There, uh, there was some there was some tomfoolery going on there at the beginning of the half.
- 5:07SPEAKER_05: I believe the scoreboard, like the the people down there at the scoreboard uh didn't have the right players in, I believe, that Texas Tech wanted to start uh at the beginning of the third quarter.
- 5:18SPEAKER_05: And Krista Gerlich kind of let them have it, saying, Hey, you know, we're gonna put in our starters.
- 5:23SPEAKER_05: I don't know why we have to play these other girls.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then I guess uh old old UT coach didn't take uh a liking to that and and got a little butthurt over it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_05: So that was a fun little rivalry happening.
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: Uh I think it's just more of this guy was frustrated and wanted to take it out on something.
- 5:41SPEAKER_04: I think he found something he could be mad at and just kind of unleashed on it just because he had to put his frustrated energy towards something.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: But you don't approach Queen Girlic without her smacking you right down.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: She's gonna take you down on the scoreboard and in the press conference.
- 5:55SPEAKER_04: She was just like, dude, this was not about you.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: How about you just take a chill pill and step off?
- 6:00SPEAKER_04: You know, like it really seems so petty, man.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: It was just I really do think he just kind of broke professionally.
- 6:07SPEAKER_04: You're saying the long ones were petty?
- 6:10SPEAKER_05: That doesn't sound right.
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: I do believe that that's what I said, and I think that is an adjective that is commonly used when when we're talking about them folks in Austin.
- 6:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so that was cool to see because they were so butthurt after that win, and and Krista Gerlich just doubled up on it.
- 6:28SPEAKER_05: She's like, I'm not backing down, I'm not apologizing for what I did because she didn't do anything wrong.
- 6:33SPEAKER_05: She was just being, you know, as as energetic and as you know, she she knew what she wanted to do, and and I like her as the leader of this Lady Raider program.
- 6:42SPEAKER_05: What'd that guy think he was she was doing?
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: That she was like, you know, your family's ugly and you don't deserve anything in life.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: Like, what she's just like complaining about the way they're doing something, bro.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: Relax, it's a sports game.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: My god, yeah.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: So uh all you're just like you don't mess with my people, those are my people.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, take it easy, Vic.
- 7:04SPEAKER_05: I'm sure, I'm sure you talk to them all the time over there at the score table.
- 7:07SPEAKER_04: But uh Thanksgiving dinner with them, yeah.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: Really, so that was fun.
- 7:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, UT uh getting upset by Texas Tech, that was huge.
- 7:17SPEAKER_05: And I loved the Texas Tech Women's uh Twitter account putting out not an upset.
- 7:22SPEAKER_05: This is real, this is real.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: This is what you should expect from Texas Tech Women's Basketball.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: So that was that was awesome.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: Do not call it an upset.
- 7:33SPEAKER_05: Yep, no doubt, no doubt.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: Um, so big win for the Lady Raiders.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: Uh, hopefully they build off that and uh keep moving forward through the season.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, we do need to talk about the men's game uh that took place in Ames against Iowa State.
- 7:46SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, so much can be said about what happened and what what took place there uh on Wednesday night.
- 7:54SPEAKER_05: And for all I'll say right now is that for Mark Adams to get this group of guys, these seven players that he had to play against the Cyclones, they found out about this on the plane to aims, according to Mark Adams.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: Is he knew that he had seven guys right before the game?
- 8:16SPEAKER_05: And for the uh seven that played to put out that type of effort and to almost beat a top 11 team in the country is impressive and deserves all the credit in the world.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: You put it perfectly, man.
- 8:31SPEAKER_04: And we had a real shooting chance there, man.
- 8:34SPEAKER_04: Like we were we were this close to pulling it off until that uh amazing three, that really lucky three, and and one.
- 8:40SPEAKER_04: Uh Mr.
- 8:41SPEAKER_04: Brockington sank there at the very end.
- 8:43SPEAKER_04: That kind of sealed the deal.
- 8:44SPEAKER_04: But dude, we were in it, and it just only have seven players running up and down the court the entire game, and none of them are like your true superstars or like you know, real workhorses.
- 8:56SPEAKER_04: It shows a lot of grit this team has, and that's exactly what you need going into March.
- 9:01SPEAKER_04: This this is a long big 12 season, every single game is gonna be tough.
- 9:06SPEAKER_04: You and I were just talking about before this conference uh this conference, this uh uh podcast even started that this conference is by far the best in the country, and it's not even close.
- 9:15SPEAKER_04: So every single night, every arena you step into is a battle, and to see us do this with half our men, just outstanding work from Coach Adams.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we were missing Kevin McCullough, Terrence Shannon, uh Malik Wilson, Daniel Boccio, Chabuzo Agbo, Sonar Calhoun, and uh the uh the the walk-on Austin Timberman.
- 9:36SPEAKER_05: Um, we were missing just so many pieces, so many guys that have been a crucial part of this team.
- 9:40SPEAKER_05: There hasn't been a game where Mark Adams hasn't played at least 10 guys this season.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: So for him to be down to seven, and that's it, you gotta go with those guys.
- 9:49SPEAKER_05: Adonis Arms played all 40 minutes in this game.
- 9:52SPEAKER_05: Clarence Nedoni played 36 minutes in this game.
- 9:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, I can't say enough about the effort that these guys put out there and the will to win, and they almost freaking pulled it off, which is, I mean, one of the most impressive things I think I and it won't go down as that.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: People are gonna look back at this game and be like, oh, okay, tech drop one to Iowa State.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: But uh truly and honestly, this was a super gutsy performance from all seven of those dudes.
- 10:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, there's no moral victories, right?
- 10:21SPEAKER_04: But it just gives you such a great feeling about what we can expect moving forward.
- 10:25SPEAKER_04: And dude, that game was 100% Mark Adams' defense.
- 10:29SPEAKER_04: That no middle defense locked them the heck down, man.
- 10:33SPEAKER_04: And to only have that many guys and being able to do that, you know, that's a lot of work, that's a lot of energy these guys were expending to keep these guys locked down.
- 10:40SPEAKER_04: It's just impressive athleticism and impressive determination, you know.
- 10:44SPEAKER_04: Just finding out a few minutes, like a few hours before you hit the court that it's just gonna be U7 and just magnificent work.
- 10:51SPEAKER_04: Obviously, it goes down in the column as an L, but you know, obviously, in our our hearts and minds, it's a W.
- 10:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 10:57SPEAKER_05: So, really the main thing is we need to get healthy, whether that's COVID protocols, whether that's guys that are out for injury-related purposes, back spasms.
- 11:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it looks like you know, Terrence Shannon's still dealing with those back spasms.
- 11:09SPEAKER_05: Um, Malik Wilson coming back from that uh microsurgery, and then now Kevin McCullough dealing with an ankle issue.
- 11:16SPEAKER_05: So uh it's just it's it's a game where you just have to be healthy.
- 11:19SPEAKER_05: You got to get a full rotation because I don't see how anybody can watch that game and be like, hey, if Texas Tech had a full rotation of guys, they would have absolutely won, which they would have.
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: So it's it's just it's just a matter of luck.
- 11:30SPEAKER_05: And I mean, you know, you can even look at UT and what they're doing right now.
- 11:34SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're they're two first conference games.
- 11:37SPEAKER_05: The opponents have had major COVID issues and and star players out for those teams, and so it's just like a kind of a luck thing at this point, and you know, you got to fight through it, and that's just what it is with COVID.
- 11:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, good on our guys for not canceling the game, you know.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we absolutely had an excuse to do so, and I'm so glad we said, no way, let's just go play our scheduled games, and that just huge props to these boys for just gritting through it, and because they had every excuse in the world to cancel them.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: You look at some of these, you know, other sport, but you look at some of these bowl games who they when they could have played, but they played anyway, it's just it's it's so great to see players step up at AM.
- 12:14SPEAKER_04: So it's just it feels good to see us out there doing our thing, yeah, for sure.
- 12:19SPEAKER_05: Um, I will say something because uh I know we had seven players and and it was a really gutsy performance, and these guys played a lot of minutes and everything like that.
- 12:29SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, to all the moms on Twitter that are coming at you as soon as you criticize a player uh for Texas Tech, it's I I just want to say something because it's okay.
- 12:41SPEAKER_05: It's okay to criticize Texas Tech players, it is for what they're doing, for the performances they're putting out.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: I'm not crapping on the guys.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: I absolutely love every player that's on this team, but you know, as soon as you put out one bad tweet about Bryson Williams, they all come at you.
- 12:57SPEAKER_05: And it's like they act like their player is their baby, and it's like, hold the phone because Bryson Williams is playing very poorly on the offensive side of the floor right now, and it's something that he needs to figure out because uh he's had a really, really poor start to the season.
- 13:12SPEAKER_05: You could say the same thing with Kevin O'Banner, who is not playing well, he's not the guy that was advertised coming to Texas Tech.
- 13:21SPEAKER_05: And I'm not saying these guys aren't going to become that, but it's also okay to criticize these players.
- 13:27SPEAKER_04: I mean, one thing we you can promise is these guys have our undying loyalty, but that doesn't protect them from criticism.
- 13:35SPEAKER_04: You can't have nothing but our praise.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: They there's another side to that coin, and they know it.
- 13:40SPEAKER_04: And it's not fair for us to sit here and shower rainbows and flowers at all times.
- 13:45SPEAKER_04: When things aren't going well, they're not going well.
- 13:47SPEAKER_04: It's not it's not because we don't think they they're that bad, it's just we know they can be better, and that's all it is.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: But they have our undying loyalty.
- 13:53SPEAKER_04: There would be no one else we'd rather cheer for.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, absolutely.
- 13:56SPEAKER_05: I'm not I am rooting 100 for Bryson Williams and Kevin O'Banner to do well for Texas Tech.
- 14:02SPEAKER_05: I don't want, I don't wish any will ill will upon those two guys, but right now it's really rough to watch on the offensive side of the floor.
- 14:10SPEAKER_05: Now, defensively, I thought Kevin O'Banner played a great game last night.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: I thought Bryson Williams had his moments on the defensive side that uh you know brought a lot to this team.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: And you know, we're so undermanned, it's hard to criticize these guys.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: But there were moments in this game where you're just like, I mean, Kevin O'Banner was scoreless in the first half.
- 14:26SPEAKER_05: This is a guy who uh averaged almost 19 points a game at Oral Roberts last year.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: This is a guy that we need to do well on the offensive side of the floor.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: And when you're missing your two top scores, uh this is when you need to step in and be a better, you know, scorer to score more points.
- 14:42SPEAKER_04: And that's that's that's one of his best things.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: Whereas we brought him in because of his shooting, you know, and all his only point was his only goal was a slam dunk.
- 14:49SPEAKER_04: It was sick, but that was it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_04: That that's all he had, and that's just really disappointing for a guy that's uh that was brought in to be a shooter.
- 14:55SPEAKER_04: You know, we all have our bad nights, we're not expecting lights out every single every single game.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: And this that was a tough arena to play in.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: The Iowa State fans showed up that Big 12 energy was definitely there, and they really helped influence some calls against us.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: Not trying, I'm not blaming the refs or anything like that.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: But they got loud, and whenever they got really loud, the refs felt like they were forced to make some decisions.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: I get it, that's what tough environments do.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: So it was a tough environment, and they went in there and showed.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: But obviously, on the offensive side of the ball, we complain about the several episodes, it just isn't there yet.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: So we're just always hoping for more there.
- 15:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it wasn't going to be there with this group of guys, especially without you know McCullough or Terrence Chan.
- 15:32SPEAKER_05: And you knew the offense was gonna be rough to watch this game, but um uh free throw shooting was kind of inexcusable.
- 15:39SPEAKER_05: I know these guys are tired, I know tired legs come into effect with all this kind of stuff.
- 15:44SPEAKER_05: But for them to shoot basically 50 from the free throw line as a team this whole game, uh yeah, less I mean it was it was bad, you know.
- 15:51SPEAKER_05: Adonis Arms was missing, uh, or uh Davion Warren was missing free throws, Clarence missed a few, O'Bannard, Williams.
- 15:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, all these guys miss free throws.
- 16:00SPEAKER_05: And uh, if we make all our free throws, we win that game.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, playing plain and simply.
- 16:05SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, that's something we need to work on.
- 16:08SPEAKER_05: And uh uh just Bryson Williams' offensive game, I'm I'm really, really, really disappointed in because it seems like as soon as he gets the ball, I'm almost cringing.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I I I'd rather you not.
- 16:21SPEAKER_05: And he he's a lot's coming towards him.
- 16:23SPEAKER_05: He's getting double teamed almost every time he gets a post shot, but uh, you know, that's when you have to look to pass, and and he's just not doing that type of thing right now.
- 16:32SPEAKER_05: Um, and as soon as we get our full rotation of guys, uh, if I don't see more bocho and less Williams, I'm gonna be a little upset, you know, at this point.
- 16:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it it's it's kind of at that point where anytime Bryson Williams pulls up for a shot, you you just expect for it to miss.
- 16:49SPEAKER_04: And that's not a that's not a good feeling as a fan, whoever uh one of the ball handlers has it.
- 16:53SPEAKER_04: Um, and just just to go back real quick to the free throw thing, uh, how we missed out on so many points.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: We missed out on nine points with uh with free throws.
- 17:01SPEAKER_04: Um, Iowa State made 75 of theirs, so every time they went to the line, they came back with something.
- 17:07SPEAKER_04: And it's with this game where it was this close, it just it just shows with the something as simple as free throws, it can break us.
- 17:14SPEAKER_04: So, even though the offensive performance was bad, we helped them down with defense, we just couldn't capitalize at the line.
- 17:18SPEAKER_04: Uh, I know I kind of went back to rewind there.
- 17:20SPEAKER_04: I just I just had to slide that in.
- 17:22SPEAKER_05: Sure, no, I mean I mean 100.
- 17:25SPEAKER_05: Uh, you knock down your free throws, it's it's only a plus for you.
- 17:28SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, we're we're talking a little negatives from this game.
- 17:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, but seriously, shout out Clarence Adolmy and Adonis Horns.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Those guys yeah played their absolute bust.
- 17:40SPEAKER_04: What was that technical, man?
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: I it was bad.
- 17:43SPEAKER_04: Clarence ice in his veins, gets that sneaky layup, yeah, and and just cheers a bit, and uh the refs are like, Oh, technical, what are you talking about?
- 17:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was a that was a little home court technical they got there.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: Um you know, I always complain about people that complain about the refs.
- 18:02SPEAKER_05: I'm that type of guy, but also when a ref tries to assert himself into the game, that's when it becomes bad, that's when it frustrates me.
- 18:11SPEAKER_05: And when you're calling technicals like that in the heat of the moment in a tight game, uh late, I mean, you just don't do that.
- 18:17SPEAKER_05: And that ref messed up, and uh, you know, but but sometimes you're not gonna get those calls going your way, and uh, you just got to work through it, unfortunately.
- 18:25SPEAKER_05: But uh Clarence played his absolute heart out.
- 18:28SPEAKER_05: That guy, I I couldn't be more proud of that dude's performance this game.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, the steals, uh, the defense, you know, he was he was kind of thrown into this main point guard facilitator role this game, and I know he's not used to playing that many minutes.
- 18:42SPEAKER_05: He played a career high in minutes this game, so um shout out to Clarence.
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: He he was really awesome.
- 18:48SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, man.
- 18:49SPEAKER_04: It's it's good to see a guy that's so loyal to the program really get get his get it get his shine on.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: So that was great to see, man.
- 18:56SPEAKER_04: I I know we kind of went on a negative tangent there, but as we ran it back in, this Iowa State squad is really, really good.
- 19:02SPEAKER_04: They're number 11 in the country, they've lost one game to Baylor.
- 19:07SPEAKER_04: So the to see us walk into their home court and nearly get them with this wounded of a team, it just shows a lot to be happy about as well.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: I know there's a lot of pessimism, but this is an optimistic podcast, and we know this team's gonna have a phenomenal conference season.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: So just get healthy, it's the main thing.
- 19:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, get get we need more bodies, we need more guys on the court because uh obviously coach Adams has instilled this culture and this fight in this team that uh you know not a lot of teams have.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: So uh that that was really cool to see.
- 19:42SPEAKER_05: I think this is a positive overall from this game.
- 19:44SPEAKER_05: You know, we move on.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: Unfortunately, we have Kansas next, and then we have Baylor right after that.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: So that's just the gauntlet that is the Big 12.
- 19:51SPEAKER_04: Well, what was the with the John Rothstein comment as well?
- 19:55SPEAKER_04: The welcome to the Big 12, Mark Adams, the ghost of Chris Beard.
- 19:59SPEAKER_04: Like, what was that all about?
- 20:01SPEAKER_05: John only speaks in narratives, so and that I I mostly like John for the most part.
- 20:08SPEAKER_05: That's the problem.
- 20:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah, with some of those national guys, it's like you know, they don't really watch your team all the way through.
- 20:15SPEAKER_05: You know, those guys are mostly watching, you know, the the Dukes of the world and the you know the those type of the UCLAs and the Gonzagas of the world, you know, they're not watching a lot of Texas Tech.
- 20:26SPEAKER_05: And I know Chris Beard is a media darling, so as soon as you know, it's gonna take some time for these uh these media heads like Jeff Goodman and and John Rosteen to really like buy into what Mark Adams is doing at Texas Tech.
- 20:40SPEAKER_05: So, you know, I don't I don't really look into that stuff too much.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: Uh if you're if you've been paying attention to this team to this program at all, you'll know that Mark Adams has been in the Big 12 since 2016.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 20:51SPEAKER_05: You know that he knows what the Big 12 is about, you know that he is the main uh vocal guy about the 18-round fight of the Big 12.
- 21:02SPEAKER_05: He knows this stuff, and for them to say that kind of that kind of BS on CBS, you know, just brush it off.
- 21:08SPEAKER_05: It's not, it's it's just CBS being what CBS is.
- 21:11SPEAKER_04: It it just seemed kind of seems kind of uncharacteristic for a guy like John Rothstein, who would you you know he knows Mark Adams has been in the program for a long time now, but uh you're right.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: He he just he's just he's just speaking in phrases because that's what John Rothstein, the bat college basketball robot, does.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: If you don't put it on, if you can't put that sentence on a t-shirt, you know, he's not gonna say it.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: So Rosteen is a robot more than anything.
- 21:36SPEAKER_04: So he's a we don't talk about the uh the crisbeard t shirt you got me anymore.
- 21:41SPEAKER_05: No, that thing's that thing's in the trash, I hope, by now.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: Uh that was that was one of my birthday present, too.
- 21:48SPEAKER_05: It was, and it was it was a good birthday purchase at the time, uh, not so much now.
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: So I hope you burn that, and that's you know, we'll we'll we'll move on from that birthday present.
- 21:58SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, you know.
- 22:00SPEAKER_04: Actually, it's that it's like in the very like depths of my closet.
- 22:03SPEAKER_04: I'm thinking during my battery party, we we just with it.
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, we'll do something with it.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: We'll we'll throw it in the we'll throw it, stomp on it a little and then throw it in the river.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: Throw it in the in the bonfire.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for real.
- 22:15SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, let's let's move on from that.
- 22:18SPEAKER_05: Uh big game against Kansas on Saturday.
- 22:20SPEAKER_05: Um hopefully we got a few more bodies.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: That's all I'll say.
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: Because Kansas, I think, is a much better team than Iowa State.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: Not that Iowa State is bad, I just think Kansas is a different level right now.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: Um, so a shock.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, so we'll see.
- 22:36SPEAKER_05: Um, hopefully, hopefully, we'll get a few more uh some good news on the uh on the player front from that.
- 22:42SPEAKER_05: Um, let's talk, let's talk football returners because we actually, I know it's the offseason, I know football season is over, but we had some guys that have announced that they are coming back for Joey Maguire's first season at Texas Tech from this past year's team.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I wanted to run through five of them that have I well, four of them have officially announced.
- 23:03SPEAKER_05: One of them is big indications that he is coming back.
- 23:06SPEAKER_05: So I wanted to start with Muddy Waters because this was the biggest one to me.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: A guy who was a senior, he was going into his last year of college football last year, uh, and then is going to get a medical red shirt, I imagine, because he got uh a season-ending injury this season.
- 23:22SPEAKER_05: And this is so huge for our secondary, for our safety court to get Muddy Waters back, to get some continuity and a guy who is a fantastic college football player.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: He's what he's probably our best back.
- 23:36SPEAKER_04: So it's so great to get him back on the field for another year.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, it does this kind of just show the kind of guy that Joey McGuire is to be able to retain these guys that are so skilled who can go anywhere and start basically.
- 23:49SPEAKER_04: It just uh insane that he's coming back to Lubbock for another year uh to get his time in this in the sun.
- 23:55SPEAKER_04: So really looking forward to getting that veterancy back and just that skill because we need it back there.
- 24:00SPEAKER_04: And I'm just really looking forward to seeing him healthy.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: No, I'm I've missed him dearly.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, a couple more, a couple more veterans on the defensive back front.
- 24:08SPEAKER_05: Uh Adrian Fry coming back for his final year of eligibility.
- 24:12SPEAKER_05: That's big.
- 24:12SPEAKER_05: I know he's had kind of an up and down uh career at Texas Tech, but anytime we can get a guy who has experience in the Big 12, experience playing these big games is huge.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then Dadrian Taylor Demerson, I know he he's an uh an underclassman, uh, a little bit, but um uh that's massive because Rabbit had such a good year.
- 24:32SPEAKER_05: Um, and then uh and then I almost forgot one.
- 24:34SPEAKER_05: Reggie Pearson as well is coming back, the big hitting Reggie Pearson.
- 24:39SPEAKER_05: So uh all four of those guys in the backfield coming back is massive.
- 24:43SPEAKER_04: Feels so good not to have to refill that zone because it's just it's a zone on defense that we struggle with so much for years now, and just to have that continuity, to have that level of play back there for another year is gonna do wonders for year one.
- 24:58SPEAKER_04: So I'm so happy about it.
- 25:00SPEAKER_04: Plus, I just love these dudes.
- 25:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, I don't know about you, but I watched that Reggie Pearson tackle and against Mississippi State about 20 times.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: So yeah, you could do that, or you could watch the Muddy Waters pick six from earlier this season.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, Rabbid made countless plays, uh, and then Adrian Fry, you know, uh he played pretty good in the bowl game.
- 25:19SPEAKER_05: I was I was really happy with his performance.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: So uh all four of those dudes coming back uh for the defensive backs are are huge.
- 25:25SPEAKER_05: Uh we got a big linebacker returning, Krishan Merriweather announcing he's coming back, uh fantastic run defender.
- 25:33SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, with how with losing Schooler and Rico Jeffers, it's you know, it sucks losing those type of players, those all-timers, uh, you know, for Texas Tech.
- 25:43SPEAKER_05: Uh, but having Krishan coming back and leading this linebacking core, being kind of your number one linebacker moving forward is is so massive for this defense.
- 25:52SPEAKER_04: Those are huge holes to fill.
- 25:55SPEAKER_04: So I'm just I'm really glad that we at least get some of it back, so some of it to fill back in because those dudes were spectacular.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: And it's just it's pretty much impossible to just replace them instantly.
- 26:06SPEAKER_04: So I'm glad we get one guy that at least has that juice in him.
- 26:09SPEAKER_04: So it's it's just it's gonna be a bit of a mix in there.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and we have uh like I mentioned on last week's pod when I did it solo, we have a good amount of returning linebackers coming back, Josiah Pierre, Kosei Elders, those type of players, and then we have a good transfer in Dimitri Moore coming in that's probably gonna play pretty big minutes.
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: So, um, you know, I think the linebacker core we're replacing a lot, and I mean a lot, but I think it's gonna be good.
- 26:34SPEAKER_05: And we could even see some of these freshmen get involved in uh Taekana and those type of guys.
- 26:39SPEAKER_05: So I think we're gonna be fine on the linebacking core, maybe not what we've had, but but fine.
- 26:44SPEAKER_04: I feel like we've been saying that though.
- 26:46SPEAKER_04: Maybe not like we've had we have a good linebacking core, maybe not like we've had for a few years now.
- 26:51SPEAKER_04: We somehow build in with some absolute studs, and there's no reason not to believe it's not gonna happen again.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: So it just for some reason, we just keep no matter how bad we are on defense, we just keep refreshing these spectacular linebackers.
- 27:03SPEAKER_04: So I feel good about that unit no matter what, but those are big holes to build.
- 27:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and then uh the last guy I wanted to touch on, he hasn't officially announced he's coming back, but every indication via social media, Twitter, all sorts of stuff, Tyler Shuck's coming back.
- 27:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm I'm pretty 99% sure that Tyler Shuck is gonna be fighting for that starting quarterback position next season against Donovan Smith and Baron Morton.
- 27:27SPEAKER_05: So I don't know what you think about that, but I I'm I'm happy with it.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: Are enough people talking about that?
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: I feel like the nonstop talk has been is it gonna be Donovan Smith or Baron Morton?
- 27:36SPEAKER_04: You know, but we have this four ex four-star quarterback coming in who had a great start to the season.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, he didn't lose a single great game, and the game we lost got knocked out of.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: Um, so just to have that veteran's feedback and that just raw skill at quarterback, I think he's the favorite to start.
- 27:52SPEAKER_04: Like, and I don't think I don't know if it's it's like really that much of a question about it.
- 27:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, uh right now I'm so out.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: I I'm just I'm lost, I should say, on who I think the quarterback is going to be next season.
- 28:08SPEAKER_05: I think it's gonna be a true battle come spring ball on who's gonna start because Donovan has shown signs that he can be fantastic.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: Uh, you know, he played a great Mississippi State game, he played a great even Baylor, he played pretty good, and then Iowa State he played fantastic.
- 28:22SPEAKER_05: So we've actually seen Donovan Smith play well in Big 12 play against good teams.
- 28:27SPEAKER_05: We've seen Tyler Shuck play well against a good Houston team.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think any of these guys I think are gonna succeed.
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: That's the good part of it.
- 28:35SPEAKER_05: But and sorry, and you well, yeah, and even in Barron Morton, I mean, we don't even know what Barron Morton can do.
- 28:41SPEAKER_05: He's this, he's the highest, I think, quarterback prospect in Texas Tech history.
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: So uh we have a good set of guys coming in here fighting for this spot.
- 28:50SPEAKER_04: And and we were we're talking about guys that are gonna be playing for football scoop.com's quarterback coach of the year and Zach Kitley.
- 28:58SPEAKER_04: So I think whoever wins this job is Zach Kitley's favorite, who thinks he can just go crazy with this young man.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: So I think we're fine no matter who it goes, because no matter who it goes to is obviously the best fit for it.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: So it's it's a great problem to have, but it's always nice knowing who your quarterback is.
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: We just don't really have that right now.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: But I feel like it's 50 Shuck, 25 the other two.
- 29:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think that's probably a good percentage to put at right now.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: Obviously, more stuff is gonna come out as the offseason goes on and we get into spring ball and all that type of good stuff.
- 29:32SPEAKER_05: So uh, but I I like that Tyler Shuck's coming back.
- 29:36SPEAKER_05: I know um a lot of people weren't super I I just I don't know if they just think meh on Tyler Shuck, like you know, he played average against FIU, average against uh uh whoever the second team we played, the crappy team that we played, but he played good in that Houston game, he played good in that second half, and he started off well against UT.
- 29:56SPEAKER_05: He threw that pick six when he already had his broken collarbone.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: So, you know, I think Tyler Shuck's a really good quarterback, and I think all three of these dudes would succeed in in Kidley system.
- 30:06SPEAKER_05: So I'm really not that worried.
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: It it's so far long ago now with the Houston game, but that Houston game's probably our best win now.
- 30:12SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's not it's not like our favorite win, but like whenever you just look at you know, head to head to all these teams, Houston's the best team we beat.
- 30:20SPEAKER_04: You know, we're talking about a team that won what 11 games.
- 30:23SPEAKER_04: So the the Cougars are really good, and he led a comeback win against them.
- 30:28SPEAKER_04: So uh I really feel good about him as well, but really it's gonna come down to who Kitley thinks is gonna win us the most games, and that's who you want in the in the pocket, anyway.
- 30:37SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: You want to talk a little 2021 year in review?
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: I do the centuries old enough to drink, man.
- 30:46SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's fantastic, it's great.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: Now we're in 2022, they've been a year, a year in making it's not as fun anymore.
- 30:52SPEAKER_05: It's still pretty fun, but oh it's no.
- 30:55SPEAKER_05: When we were 22, it was still really fun.
- 30:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's still pretty damn fun.
- 30:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 30:59SPEAKER_05: So we're gonna hit on some moments from 2021 that Red Raider Nation uh will love to reminisce on.
- 31:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, I wrote down a good amount of them, uh, but I'm sure every one of you are gonna be happy uh with hearing these things again.
- 31:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, first off, it starts January 13th, 2021.
- 31:16SPEAKER_05: This was our first big moment.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: This was Texas Tech's first iconic uh win of the new year, and that was Mac McClung beating Texas.
- 31:26SPEAKER_05: Uh that was Mac McClung coming back and going in a game that we should have been at in Austin.
- 31:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, but they canceled it.
- 31:34SPEAKER_05: They said, or they didn't cancel the game, but they said no fans like a week before the game started.
- 31:39SPEAKER_05: UT stopped allowing fans into the stadium because of COVID restrictions and all that kind of stuff.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: But Mac McClung went in there and uh beat UT uh on a on a near buzzer beater winning three.
- 31:50SPEAKER_05: Uh just an overall fantastic game.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: Definitely the best basketball game of the year, 100%.
- 31:56SPEAKER_04: Because it's definitely the one that sticks out in the year.
- 31:58SPEAKER_04: And man, you just broke my heart knowing we could have witnessed that, you know.
- 32:03SPEAKER_04: And and the thing is, and we all were saying, like, oh, you know why they really did it, because more Red Raider fans would have been there.
- 32:08SPEAKER_04: And I really believe that.
- 32:10SPEAKER_04: And it would have been a home court advantage.
- 32:12SPEAKER_04: Just imagine the atmosphere that would have been.
- 32:14SPEAKER_04: But uh, it is what it is, and it's still an amazing memory.
- 32:17SPEAKER_04: And Mac McClung is doing shocking everybody in the NBA NBA, bouncing up and down in the ranks.
- 32:23SPEAKER_04: So it's so good to see it, and just man, that's a great one.
- 32:27SPEAKER_05: Good pick, yeah, for sure.
- 32:28SPEAKER_05: So let's move on to January 30th.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech wins in a comeback fashion against LSU in the Big 12 SEC challenge for basketball.
- 32:39SPEAKER_05: I was at this game, I witnessed it and it was awesome to see.
- 32:44SPEAKER_05: I put it down there for a reason because it was such a crazy comeback win.
- 32:48SPEAKER_05: Everybody, all 25% capacity in that arena, thought LSU had it.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: And Mac McClung and Terrence Shannon said, Hold on a second, we're gonna beat you in the last minute.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: And I was over here going nuts.
- 33:01SPEAKER_05: Jackson from Ramblin' Raiders was there as well.
- 33:03SPEAKER_05: We went out drinking that night, celebrating.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: It was a great night.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: I was so jealous of both of y'all, especially the the after party, just walking around in the Scarlet and a black with almost all that purple and gold, uh, and just a fun town to party.
- 33:16SPEAKER_04: And so jealous.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: Great game, too, man.
- 33:18SPEAKER_04: And now that's just two in a row where we talk about spectacular performances from McAclung.
- 33:23SPEAKER_04: I miss him so much.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: It's so I miss having that guard so bad.
- 33:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 33:28SPEAKER_05: Miss miss some guys off that team, but uh let's move on because we got a lot to cover.
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: Um, let's move on to baseball.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: Baseball, February 26th through March 15th of 2021.
- 33:40SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech Baseball goes in a 14-game win streak with sweeps against Houston Baptist, Texas Southern Gonzaga, and Yukon wins also against Sam Houston State, Texas State and AM Corpus.
- 33:52SPEAKER_05: So I know we started off last season pretty poorly.
- 33:55SPEAKER_05: We lost to three straight SEC teams, really good teams, to be honest.
- 33:59SPEAKER_05: But then we go in and rail off 14 straight victories.
- 34:03SPEAKER_05: That was a really fun moment of last year.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, man.
- 34:06SPEAKER_04: It's it's it's at that time of year where I'm ready for some baseball.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: I love turning on some Texas Tech baseball because it's on so much.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: So you always get it some scarlet black on your screen.
- 34:15SPEAKER_04: And whether it's a 10 tadlock team, you know you're getting some good stuff.
- 34:18SPEAKER_04: And 14 in a row doesn't suck.
- 34:20SPEAKER_04: Watch some more of that real soon.
- 34:22SPEAKER_05: Yep, no doubt.
- 34:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, so the next the next four I got here, I'm gonna just rail off right now.
- 34:27SPEAKER_05: They're all basketball.
- 34:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, February 27th, Texas Tech sweeps the Longhorns in regular season play.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: Uh Mac McClung, another good performance, great defensive showing.
- 34:37SPEAKER_05: Marcus Sanosilva put up a double-double, I believe.
- 34:40SPEAKER_05: And we beat Texas for the second time of the year.
- 34:43SPEAKER_05: March 19th, first game of the NCAA tournament, Texas Tech goes and beats a good Utah State team.
- 34:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, I and a really fun game, to be honest.
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: The defensive slug fest.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: It was it was just fun because Utah State was a really good team going into that year.
- 34:57SPEAKER_05: Um, and then eventually, you know, we lose to Arkansas on a on a tough game, and and Kyler Edwards kind of blowing a layup there at the end, but tough way to end the season.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: But uh, you know, some really good good performances that year.
- 35:08SPEAKER_04: For sure.
- 35:09SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was a fun basketball season, all in all.
- 35:11SPEAKER_04: So, you know, it was a little disappointing, you know, record-wise, you know, compared to our expectations going in.
- 35:17SPEAKER_04: But all in all, it's just you good.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: The good thing is you remember the good things.
- 35:21SPEAKER_04: You remember the good moments, and those were some fun moments.
- 35:24SPEAKER_05: And here we go.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: The most up and down we have ever been, uh mentality-wise, with everything that has gone on as Texas Tech fans.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: April 1st, four to one.
- 35:37SPEAKER_05: Chris Beard leaves for the Longhorns.
- 35:41SPEAKER_05: Um, we're devastated at first.
- 35:44SPEAKER_05: We, you know, and I know reliving this kind of sucks, but it feels good now because we know what position we're in.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: But you know, when Chris Beard left, it was devastating.
- 35:56SPEAKER_05: It was it was something that I I you know, it was definitely the saddest podcast we've had, uh, but definitely the realest we've been during a podcast.
- 36:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, something where we're so we're upset and we're angry, but we're also calm and collective.
- 36:11SPEAKER_05: We're also um we just absolutely despise the guy that did the action and not down on what Texas Tech is, but despising the guy who did that to Texas Tech.
- 36:24SPEAKER_05: Um, and then you know, four days later, April 5th, we hire uh the greatest, the Mark Adams, uh, the defensive mastermind.
- 36:33SPEAKER_05: And uh we're in a really good position right now, basketball-wise.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: And it's just fun looking back and seeing, you know, how depressed we were really, but coming back and we're we're high on this program again.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: It's just so vindicated, you know.
- 36:47SPEAKER_04: We feel so good about the way things played out, especially with the kind of mess that UT is in.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: And I'm not trying to make this about him, but it's just it feels so good to have a program guy leading your program now.
- 36:59SPEAKER_04: Because you know, I remember when during the Chris Beard episode that we just kept trying to reassure everybody that it's the place, not the guy.
- 37:05SPEAKER_04: Um, and it really proved out where we hired Mark Adams, and that was the only hire to make because the fan base, I don't think I've ever seen the fan base more united over basketball during that moment because it was literally everybody was on board, not a single person was disappointed about that hire.
- 37:20SPEAKER_04: And I think that you know, having a guy that's so loyal to the program now feels so much more comfortable, feels so much better, the wins taste better, and you know, the loyalty feels stronger.
- 37:29SPEAKER_04: And that's that's that's just how it feels with the Mark Adams team.
- 37:32SPEAKER_05: When you get half of an arena to show up for an introductory press conference, that's how you know you made the right hire.
- 37:38SPEAKER_05: So I 100% am still in on Mark Adams.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: I think he's coaching his butt off to start this year, uh, in a in a season that he's had a lot of a lot of issues with and and stuff out of his control.
- 37:50SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, we'll we'll we'll move on with that.
- 37:53SPEAKER_04: And I just want to say one more thing, though.
- 37:55SPEAKER_04: I know I know you want to keep moving, but no, go ahead.
- 37:57SPEAKER_04: I I just want to say that that that announcement, like that announcement, like uh party, whatever you want to call it, uh commencement.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: Um, I think that's probably the single greatest moment for a Texas Tech fan in 2022, 20 uh 2021.
- 38:09SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 38:09SPEAKER_04: That I think that was the best time, the best day to be a Red Raider.
- 38:13SPEAKER_04: Because I mean, I think he nearly brought all of us to tears.
- 38:16SPEAKER_04: I don't want to get too flowery about all of it, but the way he just spoke about Tex Tech and the way his emotion he started crying, you know, it almost makes you want to start crying, especially when you start talking about his brother.
- 38:25SPEAKER_04: It's just I think that was the peak of Tex Tech fandom in 2021.
- 38:30SPEAKER_05: It's definitely the peak of unity between Texas Tech fans.
- 38:33SPEAKER_05: I mean, Texas Tech fans have definitely gone at each other within the fan base on differing ideas and all this sort of stuff.
- 38:39SPEAKER_05: And we can even we'll get to the bowl game here at the end of this, but uh, yeah, definitely something that we were all 100% in on was the Mark Adams hire.
- 38:49SPEAKER_05: And and that was really cool to see uh just the entire fan base come together for that.
- 38:54SPEAKER_05: So uh we'll move on.
- 38:55SPEAKER_05: Couple baseball things to hit on.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: Um, April 10th and 11th of 2021, tech baseball takes the series versus eventual Big 12 champ TCU, and then April 30th and May 1st, Texas Tech Baseball takes the series over number three Texas.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: So, you know, the two quote unquote best teams in the conference, Texas Tech won the won the regular season series against both of them.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: Excuse me.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: There is there is one blue blood in this conference, and it resides in Lubbock with Tim Tadlock.
- 39:25SPEAKER_04: That's all I gotta say.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: I don't care how good TC and UT get, we're gonna come in and take care of business.
- 39:29SPEAKER_04: And Tim knows that.
- 39:30SPEAKER_04: And it feels so good to get those every time because those are the biggest theories of the year.
- 39:37SPEAKER_05: And then we move on June 4th through the 6th.
- 39:39SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech Baseball sweeps the Lubbock regional um against with wins over the troops of Army, uh North Carolina, UCLA tech would eventually lose in the super regional to Stanford, but uh really solid regional showing, big time crowd all the time.
- 39:55SPEAKER_05: It's always good to host a regional and a super regional.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: A great, great season, all in all.
- 40:01SPEAKER_04: I mean, you're not gonna make it to Omaha every single year, it's not gonna happen.
- 40:04SPEAKER_04: So, but just great showing from our boys, and I'm just so excited about this season.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, for sure.
- 40:10SPEAKER_05: Um, then we move on to a crazy time in not only Texas Tech Sports and not only Big 12 sports, but the entirety of college sports.
- 40:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, July 21st, news breaks Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC.
- 40:29SPEAKER_05: Um crazy, crazy time for us, for everybody.
- 40:35SPEAKER_05: I know everybody was just kind of in uh limbo there for a while.
- 40:40SPEAKER_05: What's gonna happen with the Big 12?
- 40:42SPEAKER_05: Are we gonna disperse?
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: Are is Texas Tech going to the Pac 12?
- 40:46SPEAKER_05: Are we moving to some other conference somewhere?
- 40:49SPEAKER_05: Are we going down to the G5?
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: What is happening with Texas Tech?
- 40:53SPEAKER_05: Because these are two massive brands that are now leaving the Big 12.
- 40:57SPEAKER_05: And when you look back at it and you see what all transpired and where we are now, this is the best case scenario for us.
- 41:07SPEAKER_05: I am so happy with what happened and and the charge that our athletic director Kirby Hoka took to get us in this current position that we are, remaining in the Big 12, adding four really strong opponent or conference members, I should say, um, and not really caring that Texas and Oklahoma are leaving.
- 41:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just just steely-eyed, you know, laser focused, going straight to to doing what was best for Texas Tech.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: And he's he practically saved the conference.
- 41:38SPEAKER_04: I might be overplaying that, but pretty much everyone was talking about well, where is every team going to go?
- 41:43SPEAKER_04: Like you touched on.
- 41:44SPEAKER_04: Even we were, everyone was really frantic.
- 41:46SPEAKER_04: It was like we have to be going to the pack 12 now, right?
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 41:49SPEAKER_04: So they're like, that's kind of how the mentality was.
- 41:51SPEAKER_04: But he glued us together and he added some spectacular programs.
- 41:56SPEAKER_04: Who one of them played in the playoff for the national championship in football, and these are phenomenal basketball programs as well, man.
- 42:02SPEAKER_04: And it in in many ways, we're upgrading, you know.
- 42:05SPEAKER_04: If there that is a real thing if you just look at it objectively and not financially, like on field product, it's a great product.
- 42:13SPEAKER_04: And I'm I'm really excited about all of it.
- 42:15SPEAKER_04: And I think OU and UT are making a monumental mistake.
- 42:18SPEAKER_04: Obviously, not financially, it makes sense that way, but I think on the field, I think they're gonna be missing the good old days.
- 42:24SPEAKER_04: Well, except for UT, obviously.
- 42:27SPEAKER_05: It's just so sweet seeing how the first football season unfolded after these two have announced they're leaving for the SEC.
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: Both don't make the Big 12 championship, one doesn't even make a freaking bowl game.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so you know, these two teams aren't in good positions right now.
- 42:43SPEAKER_05: And then, of course, Lincoln Riley leaves OU.
- 42:45SPEAKER_05: They have to go and maneuver a little bit more.
- 42:48SPEAKER_05: They get three straight five-star quarterbacks leaving that program in the last six months.
- 42:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is huge, and this is really cool.
- 42:56SPEAKER_05: And I think karma's hitting them.
- 42:58SPEAKER_04: I was about to say, this is definitely a case where karma exists, isn't it?
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: You know, it feels so good.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: I really wish them nothing but the worst, honestly.
- 43:05SPEAKER_04: They can seriously eat dirt, especially the one in Austin, because I think they're the masterminds behind it.
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: So it's it feels so good to see them absolutely poop themselves, and it's so good to see the Big 12 championship game was to between two, not either of them.
- 43:18SPEAKER_04: So we're not gonna miss them.
- 43:20SPEAKER_04: And I I'm ready for them to leave, actually.
- 43:22SPEAKER_04: I'm ready to go ahead and move on to the next chapter.
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: Um, my next date is probably the most important date of the year, uh, the entire year of 2021.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: That is July 24th, and that was Talking Tech Podcast's 50th episode.
- 43:38SPEAKER_05: Uh this was this is a really cool day.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: This this was, to be honest, because you know, you and me started this podcast, and uh, you know, we're just messing around, having a good time with it.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: And uh we get this following that we never really expected to.
- 43:52SPEAKER_05: And uh on Twitter, people listening to us constantly, uh, you know, the fact that we have now, I think this is gonna be our 76th.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Seventh episode of Talking Tech Pod is huge.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: And I just want to put that in there.
- 44:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: You put it perfectly.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: You know, you and I said we'd only do this as long as as long as it was fun.
- 44:10SPEAKER_04: It's been a ton of fun.
- 44:11SPEAKER_04: You know, we've met so many people through Guns of Nation, Rambling Raiders have been the best.
- 44:14SPEAKER_04: Uh, getting guys like Ryan Mainville on, who's a stud, and meeting all these other people from the other teams, bringing them on the pod.
- 44:21SPEAKER_04: It's just been a blast.
- 44:22SPEAKER_04: And I can't wait to keep going.
- 44:23SPEAKER_04: Thank y'all so much.
- 44:24SPEAKER_05: No doubt, no doubt.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: So wanted to throw that in there.
- 44:27SPEAKER_05: But now we move in to football 2021 this past season.
- 44:32SPEAKER_05: What are the highlights?
- 44:34SPEAKER_05: We start off September 4th, the first game of the season.
- 44:37SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech goes into NRG Stadium, defeats Houston, uh 38 to 21.
- 44:44SPEAKER_05: Houston only lost to Cincinnati and us this season.
- 44:47SPEAKER_05: So overall, two really good teams, clearly.
- 44:50SPEAKER_05: Clearly, you know, two playoff contending level programs right now.
- 44:55SPEAKER_05: No, but seriously, this is such a huge win looking back at it.
- 44:58SPEAKER_05: I know this was probably the last big win of Matt Wells's tenure here at Texas Tech, but we were at this game, we had a hell of a time.
- 45:05SPEAKER_05: I just want to throw that in there.
- 45:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and the Rambling Raiders tailgate was a blast.
- 45:09SPEAKER_04: And it was just a good time to be a Red Raider.
- 45:11SPEAKER_04: Great day.
- 45:13SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 45:14SPEAKER_05: That's when we had hope uh that Matt Wells was turning around.
- 45:19SPEAKER_05: Rito didn't end up that way.
- 45:21SPEAKER_05: But uh let's move on.
- 45:23SPEAKER_05: September 10th.
- 45:24SPEAKER_05: That is when the Big 12 decided to add Cincinnati, Houston, BYU, and UCF uh to make the new Big 12.
- 45:32SPEAKER_05: This was a huge day for us.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: And it's in the my favorite part about that was seeing all the fans of those teams being so excited about it.
- 45:39SPEAKER_04: You know, it just it's gonna be feel so good to have people in the conference that want to be there and are grateful for being there and don't take anything for granted.
- 45:46SPEAKER_04: It's gonna feel so good.
- 45:47SPEAKER_04: Like I read one thing about UTNOU leaving where you know all the rest of the teams don't have to feel like they're walking on eggshells anymore.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: And I feel that completely.
- 45:55SPEAKER_04: And that's just how it is now.
- 45:57SPEAKER_05: It's it's a much more relaxed type of feel to it.
- 45:59SPEAKER_05: You know, we still have such good teams in this conference.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: I mean, Oklahoma State and Baylor made NY six bowls this year.
- 46:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, Texas Tech kicked the brakes off of Mississippi State this year, Cincinnati made the playoff, BYU was five and oh against the Pac 12 this year.
- 46:14SPEAKER_05: We're in a really solid position.
- 46:16SPEAKER_04: Absolutely great, and even better fans bringing in.
- 46:19SPEAKER_04: So that's the best part about it is interacting with all the people on the teams.
- 46:22SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 46:23SPEAKER_05: So we go to the fame date of October 25th.
- 46:28SPEAKER_05: Matt Wells is let go by Texas Tech.
- 46:31SPEAKER_05: This is a uh a day that you know, you look back on and it's 100% a good thing, it's 100% something that needed to be happened.
- 46:40SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, you you it was it was still kind of bittersweet because I I like Matt Wells, I like the person that is Matt Wells, I like uh the the program, the mentality that he brought to Texas Tech.
- 46:54SPEAKER_05: He's a good dude, he brought a clean program to Texas Tech, but he just wasn't doing it as a head coach.
- 47:01SPEAKER_05: And I'm glad that Kirby pulled the trigger on this when he really didn't have to.
- 47:06SPEAKER_05: He could have kind of wrote it out a little more, but he decided, Matt Wells, it's not gonna happen with you, man.
- 47:13SPEAKER_05: I know you're in your third year.
- 47:14SPEAKER_05: I know we're probably gonna get criticized for this when we're at a five and three record, but he did it and it worked out for the best.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, after that K-State game, it was we were all kind of thinking it might actually happen.
- 47:24SPEAKER_04: Like this, he might actually get fired now, and he did.
- 47:26SPEAKER_04: And I think it was a master stroke from Kirby Hoka because uh wherever you're looking at the season of retrospect, countless big coaches were fired, like countless.
- 47:35SPEAKER_04: Like it was the coaching search mid-season was crazy, and we were out way ahead of it.
- 47:41SPEAKER_04: We hire our guy before any power five team, way ahead of it.
- 47:44SPEAKER_04: So we get his guy, we get our guy in, he gets his guys in early before everyone else, and gets on the recruiting trail before everyone else.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: It was a master stroke because we are already in better shape now than we were with Matt Wells, and all it took was a month, and not to mention it was addition from subtraction because Sonny Cumby is clearly the better coach, and he proved out he got us to a bowl game and then kicked absolute ass in set bowl game.
- 48:10SPEAKER_04: So it's all in all a complete upgrade, a complete overhaul upgrade.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 48:17SPEAKER_05: Uh, we move on to November 8th.
- 48:20SPEAKER_05: Uh, our second big three sport head coach is hired in Joey McGuire.
- 48:28SPEAKER_05: Um this was a this was a a I I don't want to say fun uh search because those two weeks, I was I was about tired of it.
- 48:39SPEAKER_05: By the end of that two weeks, I was like, okay, let's just get let's get the new guy in here.
- 48:43SPEAKER_05: I'm I'm tired of not knowing who's our who our head coach is gonna be.
- 48:47SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, you talk about a guy who fires up the fan base.
- 48:51SPEAKER_05: Uh now I will agree with you that I think the Mark Adams hire was definitely something that united the fan base a little more uh than Joey Maguire.
- 49:00SPEAKER_05: But you talk about a guy who freaking fired up the fan base is Joey Maguire, and a guy that has already moved up the recruiting classes insanely.
- 49:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, and and a guy who I think is the right dude for the job.
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it was kind of crazy because initially we're thinking Jeff Trailer is clearly the guy we're going to hire.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: And I think everyone thought that, like literally everyone, even UTSA.
- 49:22SPEAKER_04: And so uh whenever you got extended at UTSA, it's kind of like, oh crap, are we?
- 49:27SPEAKER_04: I guess we're just gonna go get Sonny Dykes, and then we go and hire this man named Joey McGuire.
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: And like you said, dude, this guy, and and I talk about a grassroots movement, by the way, on Twitter.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, hashtag hiring mcuire, but uh I digress.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: Uh, what I was saying, well, it's gonna go with you is is you know, this hire feels so much different, you know.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: We're so excited about him, and he's so excited to be here, it's just a complete 180 from hiring Matt Wells.
- 49:51SPEAKER_04: Just there was no energy behind it.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: It was just like, okay, I guess we'll see how this plays out.
- 49:55SPEAKER_04: But this is like, oh, I'm in, I bought in, let's do this, and he makes you do that.
- 49:59SPEAKER_04: And I think he does that with the recruits clearly.
- 50:01SPEAKER_04: So I'm just I'm really excited.
- 50:02SPEAKER_04: I I tweeted this the other day, got some traction that I think this is the first time in ages where we can be authentically excited about the tech the direction Tech Tech's moving in.
- 50:11SPEAKER_04: I don't think there's been this much excitement behind the program since we hired Cliff Kingsbury.
- 50:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I want to I agreed with that tweet 100.
- 50:18SPEAKER_05: I was I I remember because we we went into tech in 2014, so that was the year after, you know.
- 50:24SPEAKER_05: But we were still we were we knew we were going to tech in 2013, and we were like, okay, this Kingsbury guy, you know, we we railed off seven straight wins to start the year, and uh, you know, Davis Webb, uh Dark Horse Heisman.
- 50:37SPEAKER_05: But no, this is seriously the highest that I think the Texas Tech fan base thinks of the Texas Tech football program.
- 50:46SPEAKER_05: We have new facilities coming our way, we have a great recruiting class coming in.
- 50:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, Joey Maguire fires up everybody, and and part of that has something to do with he knows how to use social media to his best advantage.
- 51:00SPEAKER_05: Him and his staff know how to fire up Texas Tech in a way that Matt Wells and Cliff Kingsbury just didn't.
- 51:07SPEAKER_04: So great to feel like you're connected to the program on social media at all times.
- 51:11SPEAKER_04: Because I always felt like there was a disconnect between the last guys, like the community and them.
- 51:15SPEAKER_04: It just like we only felt like we were talking to him unless he was on camera talking to us.
- 51:20SPEAKER_04: So it's just good to see him out and about on even the just texting with Twitter.
- 51:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, definitely.
- 51:24SPEAKER_05: So that was a huge moment uh on November 8th when we hired Joey McGuire.
- 51:29SPEAKER_05: Uh, we have two more big moments left in 2021, one of which being November 13th.
- 51:35SPEAKER_05: That was the game Texas Tech got bull eligible for the first time since 2017.
- 51:41SPEAKER_05: Um, massive game against Iowa State.
- 51:44SPEAKER_05: Uh, last second win.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: That that was another moment that just fires you up when you're remembering it.
- 51:50SPEAKER_05: You're you're going back at past tweets, and Jonathan Garabay kicks the 62-yarder to send you to bull eligibility.
- 51:58SPEAKER_05: You're so hyped for Sonny Cumby.
- 52:00SPEAKER_05: You you're so hyped to be bull eligible, you're hyped for the direction of the program.
- 52:04SPEAKER_05: It was just a great, great moment of 2021.
- 52:08SPEAKER_04: Was that the single greatest football moment of 2021, like on the field?
- 52:13SPEAKER_04: That that or the ball game, that or the ball.
- 52:15SPEAKER_04: I mean, the bowl game was great, but this man smokes a field goal that NFL teams wouldn't try.
- 52:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's just I I remember going crazy in my living room, you know.
- 52:28SPEAKER_04: Like I was running all around.
- 52:29SPEAKER_04: Like, he I also like I was just repeating, like, he made that, he made that.
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: Like, it's just a tough call, but just a spectacular game.
- 52:37SPEAKER_04: Like, it's a good Iowa State squad.
- 52:39SPEAKER_04: So, man, that felt so good for Sonny and the boys.
- 52:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: That was the that was the game where I was like, okay, Sonny Cumby deserves all the credit in the freaking world for doing that.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: That was the first glimpse of Donovan Smith that we really saw him play really well in.
- 52:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, and then of course, John Garabay immortalized in Texas Tech history on uh one of the longest field, the longest field goal, uh, I think that in in Texas Tech history that we've hit to win the game in the last minute.
- 53:09SPEAKER_05: Um, that was just a huge moment on November 13th.
- 53:12SPEAKER_05: Um, that I will relive for a long time.
- 53:16SPEAKER_05: Um, and then the final moment of 2021, the bowl game, the game against a former head coach, against Mike Leach, against Mississippi State.
- 53:27SPEAKER_05: We go in there, we're 10-point dogs.
- 53:29SPEAKER_05: We're like, you know what?
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: F it.
- 53:31SPEAKER_05: We're gonna go beat him 34 to 7.
- 53:34SPEAKER_05: We're gonna beat our former coach who's talked all this mess all these years.
- 53:38SPEAKER_05: Uh, it was such it was probably the most satisfying win of 2021.
- 53:44SPEAKER_04: It was just an absolute throttling, and I don't think we won a game like that all season, maybe save Kansas, where we just absolutely take it to this team and blow the doors off of them.
- 53:54SPEAKER_04: They never had a chance once we really got going, and it just felt so good.
- 53:58SPEAKER_04: And the thing is, I don't think that team went out there and beat beat Mike Leach.
- 54:02SPEAKER_04: I think that team went out there and won for Sonny Gumby.
- 54:04SPEAKER_04: I think that was the story of the game.
- 54:06SPEAKER_04: That you know, this and just a guy that's so connected to school, way more so than Mike Leach ever was.
- 54:11SPEAKER_04: That Sonny Cumby just is a hero and loving forever, and those boys did it for him, and those seniors fought for him and each other, and it just felt so good to watch, and it felt so good to just finally shed the shadow off.
- 54:26SPEAKER_04: The shadow's gone.
- 54:27SPEAKER_04: You can never talk about it ever again in that sense.
- 54:30SPEAKER_04: You know, just look at it blue, just look back on those days fondly because now we're it's a new dawn, and we clearly made it so.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 54:36SPEAKER_05: This is a great way to end off 2021 and go into 2022.
- 54:41SPEAKER_05: I'm hyped for next football season, and this bowl game has a lot to do with that.
- 54:46SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, man.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: And just this new staff that Sonny Cummings handing the torch off to.
- 54:52SPEAKER_04: I'm so excited about, and just I'm so proud of Sonny going on, leading on his own program.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: He's gonna be a phenomenal head coach.
- 54:59SPEAKER_04: Talk about a players guy, he's gonna win those boys over in Louisiana.
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, rooting for LaTeX next season.
- 55:04SPEAKER_05: So that's it, man.
- 55:06SPEAKER_05: That was the year in review.
- 55:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, it was fun looking back at some of these moments, maybe something that some of y'all maybe forgot about.
- 55:13SPEAKER_05: Uh, just something that that I thought I think we did a pretty good job of uh just reminiscing on.
- 55:18SPEAKER_04: I think it was a better year than you realize, you know.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: When you just it takes looking back and remembering all the good times that man, that was a good year for tech.
- 55:26SPEAKER_04: And in so many ways it was because I remember during the football season that I had literally never been lower on the Red Raiders in football after that Kansas State game.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: I was so fed up in that UT game, I was broken, and I was just like I was so sick of it.
- 55:41SPEAKER_04: And just to see us turn around and have a memorable season, a successful winning season, you know, it feels so good.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: And getting Mark Adams, man, it just wrap it all up, it felt really good.
- 55:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
- 55:53SPEAKER_05: And even, yeah, basketball.
- 55:55SPEAKER_05: I mean, like being at your low point where you're like, damn, we just lost a guy that brought us to the national championship.
- 56:03SPEAKER_05: But for us to be where we are now, thinking about this game that we just played against Iowa State this past week with seven guys and almost going to beat a top 11 team in the country, you can tell that it's not Chris Beard, it's Texas Tech, it's Mark Adams, it's the mentality that we have, it's not just a single coach, it's what this program has become.
- 56:26SPEAKER_05: And that uplifts you.
- 56:27SPEAKER_05: It uplifts me.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: I I'm I'm only happy after going back through all this, and not just not just Mark Adams and the players, man.
- 56:34SPEAKER_04: Seeing all these boys come back and play for their school, not the coach, their school.
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: But no, I mean, they are playing for their coach, but they were always going to play for their coach, and it just wasn't Chris Beard.
- 56:46SPEAKER_04: So, hey, just a good episode, man.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: It's fun to talk about the past like that, and I can't wait to do it again this time next year.
- 56:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, but let's move on.
- 56:55SPEAKER_05: We have one final segment, uh, and that is what we do every single week on Talking Tech Pod.
- 57:01SPEAKER_05: Uh, we have a little theme this week.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: We're gonna do funny songs of the week, songs that are good.
- 57:07SPEAKER_05: We're gonna open up the new year with some positive vibes.
- 57:11SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is your funny song of the week?
- 57:15SPEAKER_04: All right, you know, I my parents live up in Oklahoma, and the funny thing that my dad and I always complain about with Oklahoma, and everybody complains about Oklahoma, is that the beer's weak, it's brewed weaker.
- 57:24SPEAKER_04: It's called 3-2 beer because it's it can only go to maximum 3.2% alcohol content.
- 57:29SPEAKER_04: Um, even like in all your so all your cores and stuff aren't gonna get you drunk.
- 57:33SPEAKER_04: Um, so a funny thing, it's changed now, but the it's been like that forever.
- 57:37SPEAKER_04: But the funny thing about this song is that's exactly what the song's about.
- 57:40SPEAKER_04: It's called okay whiskey by Jason Edy.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: He's uh he's a popular songwriter here in Texas.
- 57:45SPEAKER_04: Uh, he's in that Americana sort of Texas country music scene, but it's called OK Whiskey by Jason Edy.
- 57:52SPEAKER_04: It's a funny song because he's saying, I've been drinking beer, why aren't I drunk?
- 57:54SPEAKER_04: He's like, Oh crap, I'm in Oklahoma.
- 57:56SPEAKER_04: I should have been drinking whiskey this whole time.
- 57:58SPEAKER_04: So it's a funny song and really catchy.
- 58:00SPEAKER_04: You'll catch yourself just like kind of talking, singing it whenever you're just kind of bobbing around.
- 58:05SPEAKER_06: Whiskey and nothing, nothing, Oklahoma.
- 58:09SPEAKER_06: The beer up here, it's just home new.
- 58:12SPEAKER_06: Line them up, our tender.
- 58:14SPEAKER_06: It don't have to be your finest.
- 58:16SPEAKER_06: Okay, whiskey treats me better than that old three, two.
- 58:20SPEAKER_05: You're a true Oklahoma boy at heart.
- 58:23SPEAKER_05: We all know it.
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 58:27SPEAKER_05: No, that's a good one.
- 58:28SPEAKER_05: That's I mean, that's that's good.
- 58:30SPEAKER_05: I know, uh, I know you you've always complained about uh the percentage, the weird alcohol laws they have up in Oklahoma when you lived up there.
- 58:38SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, that's a good one.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: I'll have to give that a listen.
- 58:42SPEAKER_05: What do you got for me, man?
- 58:44SPEAKER_05: All right, mine is the complete opposite.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: Mine is the complete opposite of yours, uh, in a in a music genre fashion, and I guess in just a just it's just different.
- 58:57SPEAKER_05: Um, my my song of the week is going to be um loose as a goose by boozy badass.
- 59:06SPEAKER_05: It is a uh of course it's it's a rap song, it's fantastic.
- 59:11SPEAKER_05: It is uh I'm I'm I'm in Baton Rouge, so I'm I'm just surrounded by boozy stands uh all over here because I think he's from the area.
- 59:21SPEAKER_05: Oh my god, dude.
- 59:24SPEAKER_05: This song is freaking hilarious.
- 59:27SPEAKER_05: It's just something you're bopping to.
- 59:29SPEAKER_05: It doesn't make any sense, it's the best thing ever.
- 59:33SPEAKER_05: Uh, that is uh loose as a goose, boozy badass.
- 59:48SPEAKER_04: I have never heard of the guy.
- 59:50SPEAKER_04: This this sounds so ridiculous, but I'm excited to hear it.
- 59:53SPEAKER_04: I love laughing during music.
- 59:54SPEAKER_04: It doesn't all have to be deep, some of it can just make you smile.
- 59:57SPEAKER_04: So uh this is a good segment.
- 59:59SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna give you uh well, this is a little late, but it's an explicit warning.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_05: The song is very explicit.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_05: There's a lot of a lot of curse words in it.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_05: So be be mindful if you're around children or if you're around young, whatever.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_05: But uh, yeah, man, this was fun.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_05: Uh a great way to break into the new year.
