- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the five o'clock shadow.
- 0:08And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Scott Clow, Portfolio Manager at PSG
- 0:15Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:17I was thinking about it this morning, actually, and I thought, Lindsay, you
- 0:20shouldn't be greedy.
- 0:22You've had a war, and as a newshound, a war is a horrible thing to say.
- 0:28But it provides a lot of news.
- 0:30I'd rather not have the war and not have the news and be bored.
- 0:34But I do enjoy some bad news and some market-stirring stuff.
- 0:39I'm sitting here today and I'm thinking the gold price has done this over the last
- 0:43few years.
- 0:45The PGMs have done this.
- 0:47Oil has done that and everything.
- 0:49And I think to myself, where are we now?
- 0:51Where are we with interest rates?
- 0:53Are we going into stagflation?
- 0:55Will there be a recession?
- 0:57All those things have gone through my head pre- talking to you.
- 0:59So you're going to get the brunt of it, unfortunately.
- 1:01You're going to have to tell me all the answers to those questions.
- 1:02Don't you feel like that?
- 1:03Where to next?
- 1:05So all in less than 20 minutes.
- 1:07So there we go.
- 1:0919 now.
- 1:10Okay.
- 1:13So the short answer is, I actually got a, it was part of an interview this
- 1:17afternoon,
- 1:17and the commentator asked me specifically, and the question was,
- 1:24I can't He phrased it exactly, but he said,
- 1:28so there's some people of the opinion that the rent is going to
- 1:35skyrocket over the next few days or months.
- 1:39When you say skyrocket, you mean skyrocket?
- 1:42Exactly.
- 1:43What does that mean?
- 1:43Does it mean it goes to 20 or it goes to 13.50?
- 1:47Yes.
- 1:48Some people say if the rent skyrockets, it goes back to 19, whereas I would say it
- 1:53goes to 12.50 because that means it's going up.
- 1:55I'm in your camp I'm in your camp so I had to ask him exactly the question you know
- 2:00what are we
- 2:02because if we had this conversation two weeks ago we would have naturally accepted
- 2:06the fact that
- 2:08Skyrocket means it's going back to
- 2:1014 Rand or 13 Rand to the dollar but now suddenly we're sitting in a war
- 2:15environment where people say it's going to
- 2:17Skyrocket you need to ask the question and funny enough it was in actual fact they
- 2:22were they were Thank you.
- 2:24But this specific commentator, we're referring to people talking about the rent
- 2:28now going back to 1920,
- 2:3020 rands of the dollar.
- 2:32And how things could change in literally two weeks.
- 2:33And the thing that made it change was this war.
- 2:38So the thing is now to expect, we need to expect the unexpected.
- 2:45It's like a stupid phrase.
- 2:47But effectively, this could go left and right.
- 2:50If we sit with a scenario.
- 2:52that the straight stay is closed,
- 2:56that the war is a prolonged war and it's going to continue for months or even
- 3:03years,
- 3:04then don't be surprised if a repeat of what we've seen in the World Prize two
- 3:11days ago is sort of
- 3:13that's the new norm.
- 3:15Because now they're talking and say, well, this troubling scenario put us in an
- 3:19environment where they need to open up
- 3:21some new taps.
- 3:23They need to.
- 3:25now go into the oil reserves and make sure that they bring some stability by
- 3:27pumping the most amount of reserves since, what was it, when the Ukraine, well,
- 3:33it's even more than when the Ukraine and Russia war started.
- 3:38If we see the oil price continue to weaken and weaken even further, then yes,
- 3:46you will pay more for your petrol or your gas.
- 3:50depending on where you stay in the world.
- 3:52Strengthen, you mean?
- 3:53You said weaken.
- 3:55No, you will pay more if it strengthens.
- 3:58If the world price, I see the world price going from
- 4:02$70 to $120 as way weaker.
- 4:05But I know what you mean.
- 4:07Yes, yes, okay, I see what you mean.
- 4:08But we are, you know, the new normal is not $120 a barrel yet.
- 4:13That really depends.
- 4:14But I'm looking at a graph now, Skok, of Brent crude oil.
- 4:17And if we go back to...
- 4:20If we go back to, let's say, May 2025, April 2025,
- 4:26it's about a year ago.
- 4:28About a year ago, it was, where was that, a goat lying along there, $70 a barrel.
- 4:34And in March of this year, it was $70 a barrel.
- 4:38So it's essentially gone sideways to slightly lower, actually, because it did
- 4:43dip to $60.
- 4:45But let's say it's gone sideways.
- 4:47It went to $119.50 and it's now $91.50, let's say that.
- 4:52I don't see it coming back below 80 while there's still a little bit of a scuffle
- 4:58going on in the Middle East.
- 5:00I'm not being disrespectful about the war here.
- 5:00I'm just saying.
- 5:03I think we've gone up to the next leg.
- 5:05And how does the world cope with oil at these prices?
- 5:10It's got to have an effect.
- 5:12It's not going to have an effect on today's CPI in the United States.
- 5:15We've seen that.
- 5:16But it is having an effect in the future, don't you think?
- 5:19And that changes everything to me.
- 5:21Definitely.
- 5:22No, no, definitely.
- 5:23Because it's the ripple effect.
- 5:26I mean, that same growth that you took, I mean, that...
- 5:29period between, let's call it March last year and just before the war started,
- 5:34it was one of the lowest levels that we've seen the oil price stabilize in years.
- 5:40I mean, we've only really seen it lower in COVID.
- 5:43But after the Ukraine-Russia war broke out,
- 5:50the oil price also went to $120, $125 per barrel.
- 5:55And then after people got used to the Funny how we should get used to wars,
- 6:01but when people got used to the war and see all that stuff,
- 6:04it actually sort of averaged out around about the $85 per barrel.
- 6:10So what we've seen over the past year was sort of great.
- 6:13So I agree with you that these newer normals is going to be higher oil price.
- 6:18But what's that going to affect?
- 6:19We've already seen today the likes of Astral's coming out to say, well,
- 6:25it's been a great, great year because we came off.
- 6:28fairly high maize prices and soybean prices in
- 6:342024-25.
- 6:37That came off quite a bit.
- 6:39So that was good.
- 6:41Plus, we had a much stronger RAND.
- 6:43So that was good.
- 6:44So already one company is talking about the effect.
- 6:48And now they say, well, if the oil price stays at these current levels,
- 6:55the petrol price is going to be… getting a product from point A to point B is just
- 7:01going to cost way more.
- 7:03But also add to that, you know, most of these fertilizer things which these
- 7:07farmers use,
- 7:09you come out of that Middle East, Eastern region.
- 7:11So that's going to kick up prices.
- 7:13So you mentioned the stagflation.
- 7:15You know, this is a conversation we've had many, many times.
- 7:18I can't see that, firstly, this war or a prolonged war.
- 7:26will not have an inflationary effect.
- 7:28In actual fact, I think it could have quite a serious inflationary effect.
- 7:31I think so too.
- 7:32And the other thing that people keep on talking about, and it's a phrase I don't
- 7:39like to use because it's overused, they keep on saying boots on the ground,
- 7:41which is troops, in other words.
- 7:42Yes.
- 7:43And they haven't ruled it out.
- 7:44If that happens, then it's all bets off about the war stopping.
- 7:48As soon as you get troops on the ground in Iran, then it's like an Afghanistan
- 7:53situation.
- 7:55And it's horrible, Skulk.
- 7:57truly horrible afghanistan doesn't produce oil it produces poppies yeah opium poppies
- 8:02it's as simple as
- 8:04that but it's iran is so important and one thing that hasn't happened yet is there's
- 8:09an island called karg
- 8:11island which
- 8:13is close to the strait of hormuz it's where the iranian oil
- 8:17refining facility is 90 percent of iranian oil goes through that island.
- 8:21They haven't touched it yet.
- 8:22Why haven't they touched it?
- 8:23It's an easy target, the Israeli and the US bombers.
- 8:28It's just too controversial to bomb that because then the oil prices go to 150
- 8:33straight away.
- 8:35And do you know who buys 98% of Iranian oil?
- 8:36Of course you do.
- 8:37It's China.
- 8:38And then you've got a real problem.
- 8:40There's so many different little arguments that can be made.
- 8:44But whatever it is, it's not good, and it's not getting any better to me anyway.
- 8:49There's only one.
- 8:50That's only one leg.
- 8:52Because we're talking about the inflationary leg.
- 8:54Because remember, we went into this year, we really went into two years ago,
- 8:58where we expected all these rate cuts coming from the Fed.
- 9:02And we know that was a really contentious subject because last year it was,
- 9:07how independent is the Fed still?
- 9:09Are the Fed going to buckle under the pressure of Trump wanting to get rates
- 9:15lower and way lower?
- 9:17Because remember, he said the U.S.
- 9:17interest rate should be the lowest in the world.
- 9:20Well, now we're sitting in an environment where we're talking about inflation.
- 9:24We're talking about oil at these current levels.
- 9:27So you could now say if we stay at these current levels, a rate cut is gone.
- 9:33ECB already came out this morning stating that, well,
- 9:37they're sort of sitting in between a rock and a hard place now because they would
- 9:44most probably next move would be to not cut anymore,
- 9:46but now hike.
- 9:48And that's...
- 9:50That's a major problem because now what you've got is that is the quickest way of
- 9:54putting the U.S.
- 9:56and most probably the whole world into a recession.
- 9:57Yes.
- 9:58And so there you've got your no economic growth.
- 10:02You've got the inflationary environment.
- 10:04And also, you know, you could expect if you see a recessionary environment in the
- 10:10U.S.
- 10:10you would see unemployment pop up even higher.
- 10:13So, yes, that's, I think, where we most probably go.
- 10:18But if they can get this war done and dusted, the way Trump has, over the past
- 10:25seven days,
- 10:27the one moment this war is pretty much done.
- 10:28It is done.
- 10:29And the next thing, you suddenly hear the commentators come out, and Trump himself,
- 10:34well,
- 10:36we won't stop until we're done.
- 10:38And it could take a bit longer.
- 10:40There was an interesting chat.
- 10:43There's been a bit of a leak from one of the congressmen who was in the debriefing,
- 10:50a closed doors debriefing about the war.
- 10:52He said it took two hours.
- 10:54I can't tell you too much, but all I can tell you is that they don't know what
- 10:55they're doing.
- 10:56It was the most scary meeting he's ever been in.
- 10:58They don't know why they went there and they don't know how long it's going to
- 11:02take.
- 11:03Literally, it was almost like one of those situations where Trump woke up in the
- 11:10morning and said, I had a dream about Iran.
- 11:12Let's go and let's go and attack it.
- 11:14It was that.
- 11:16I mean, that's frivolous what I've just said, but you know what he's like.
- 11:18The weird and the worst thing of all, Lindsay, is the fact that I would believe
- 11:22it.
- 11:22I mean, just look, I mean, we're sitting on the 11th of March.
- 11:27He came into office the 21st of January last year.
- 11:31We're talking about Trump being back in office,
- 11:36let's call it a little bit more than… one year and one month just go and count the
- 11:43amount of things that's happened i
- 11:45mean god he just he just loves the
- 11:46attention anyway uh let's get back to other things now because my time is
- 11:52limited today and i'm going to read out the
- 11:54names of companies the
- 11:56first one is harmony the other one the other ones are growth point rainbow
- 12:01chicken metair
- 12:03out assurance they all came out with results uh before between seven and eight
- 12:07o'clock this morning
- 12:09Which one or ones would you like to pick with a brief summary of what's going on?
- 12:12We have to start with… Brief summary.
- 12:15Okay, wait a second.
- 12:16Harmony is a gold mining company, isn't it?
- 12:18And Harmony, gold and brief and scuff don't go together.
- 12:23Yeah, let's tackle that one first because this is going to be a quick one.
- 12:26I mean, the share price is down over 11%.
- 12:30So when you look at the results,
- 12:35I think the major thing that stood out was the fact that production was really iffy.
- 12:42You would want to see these gold miners really working pretty much 27
- 12:49hours a day.
- 12:50Yes.
- 12:51But, I mean, you could see that there were some problems with the production side.
- 12:56So production was down.
- 12:59And also when you look at the they always had a little bit higher.
- 13:02They're all in sustainable cost.
- 13:04has run about the $2,100 per pound.
- 13:07So a little bit more than your, it's got your $1,800 odd dollars that Anger Gold
- 13:13and Goldfields has got.
- 13:15So I think a bit of a disappointment for the market.
- 13:17You know, just taking consideration, we had a bit of retracement in all gold
- 13:23shares, gold miners today.
- 13:25But I mean, Harmony being the one that's not really producing the way like the
- 13:31other gold miners are doing,
- 13:33that just, I think, saw them.
- 13:35get hurt a little bit more today.
- 13:37I think the star, out-surance today, for sure.
- 13:37And I think we were spoiled this week because we had, I think it was on Monday,
- 13:43Monday or Tuesday.
- 13:45Yeah, it was Monday.
- 13:47Monday we had Santam. Yes.
- 13:49And today we had out-surance.
- 13:51And it's really, really good to see that both these insurers did really well.
- 13:55I mean, you can see they well-managed and they really did pretty solid.
- 14:01But when I look at out-surance, They return on equity guarantee over 30%,
- 14:0732 odd percent.
- 14:08So that's really good.
- 14:12They've got a dividend and a special dividend.
- 14:14That's always a positive sign.
- 14:18And yeah, the earnings, normalized earnings, all those, they did really well.
- 14:23So solid growth, great company.
- 14:25And when I look at the outlook, they did mention that they've got a strong capital
- 14:32position.
- 14:34And they think that organic growth-wise, they're really positive for the next year
- 14:39or so.
- 14:39So even from the outlook point of view, it's looking good.
- 14:46One you didn't mention was RemGrow.
- 14:49You know that's one of my companies that I really fancy.
- 14:53And why I'm bringing him in the conversation, because naturally,
- 14:58one of the largest holdings within the… the Bimgro portfolio, and it is
- 15:04outshurants,
- 15:06but we've heard now today that Bimgro are now fully on its way getting rid of their
- 15:11total holdings of
- 15:13first-round.
- 15:15Now, this is a conversation you and I had last year when they talked about
- 15:18Raynet, how they unbundled, and I said, watch this space,
- 15:23because you can see they're selling off all the crown juice, starting to unlock
- 15:28value in Raynet.
- 15:30Do not Don't be surprised if you start seeing a similar reaction in RimGrowth.
- 15:35And on that stage… Simply because it's an archaic structure and investors don't like
- 15:40that anymore,
- 15:42constantly trading at a discount to the sum of the parts.
- 15:43Is that why it is?
- 15:44Yes.
- 15:45I mean, on that stage, the discounts are over 40%.
- 15:48I think it's still just shy of 40%.
- 15:50So I do think that this is becoming a really attractive play.
- 15:56So for the listeners out there that sort of… got a bit of FOMO, felt that they miss
- 16:02out on outshones,
- 16:04a nice entry point could be looking at something like a RimGrow where you buy
- 16:09most of these assets at quite a
- 16:11serious discount.
- 16:13What was the other?
- 16:15Well, we talked about Astral.
- 16:17Astral and Rainbow Chicken's got very similar storyline.
- 16:20Very bad.
- 16:22I mean, we know the maze prices were extremely high in 2024, and that came off.
- 16:28And that naturally is the biggest inset cost for rainbow chickens and for astrol.
- 16:33And that saw them in a better position, but they also warned.
- 16:38They warned and they said, if we do see these oil prices stay at these current
- 16:44levels,
- 16:45if we do see a kick-up, I just quickly looked at the biggest inset cost,
- 16:50which is basically soil beans and maize.
- 16:54And if you look at those two… The maize price is now up 2% year to date,
- 17:00and swerve beans up over 16%.
- 17:03So clearly there's a bit of a kicker there,
- 17:05and it could be just something to just put some cold water on any person that want to
- 17:12get a speculative position
- 17:14on rainbow chickens.
- 17:16I think they've done really well in 2024,
- 17:16but they came off sort of low base in 2024 to a higher base in 2025.
- 17:22Yeah, I think that was the most important ones.
- 17:25I can...
- 17:26No, it's very good.
- 17:26It's been a busy results time and the JSC is sort of holding its own.
- 17:32But on the other hand, it's out of the company's hands right now when it comes to
- 17:38the macro theme, isn't it?
- 17:40Because the bonds have rallied essentially 100 basis points.
- 17:41That's the 10-year.
- 17:43The round has gone from the high 1570s or
- 17:4760s to the at one point to the where is it now?
- 17:501640.
- 17:51But anyway, let me give you some prices, Scott, so we can just sort of step.
- 17:55back a bit from the corporate stuff and our war scenarios to what's actually
- 18:00happening on the spot markets.
- 18:02And dollar-rand is unchanged at 1639.
- 18:03British pound against the round 2198.
- 18:05And the euro-rand 1897.
- 18:08Euro-dollar is about 11605.
- 18:13So the euro has regained some of its luster against the dollar.
- 18:17And there's talk, as you said earlier, Scott, that the ECB's next move maybe up.
- 18:23I mean, it's just...
- 18:24It's not going to be down, that's for sure.
- 18:26British pound against the US dollar, 134.50.
- 18:29Gold price, 51.70, which is down
- 18:33$22. And I think maybe the investors are being a little bit hard on the gold shares
- 18:40and the other miners
- 18:42because of a perceived drawdown in metal prices coming up.
- 18:45But anyway, platinum down 1.5% or $35 to 21.
- 18:49I'll call it 2200 on the nose.
- 18:51Palladium.
- 18:52Not doing so well, down nearly 3% at $16.49, $48 per ounce.
- 18:57Let's have a look at the other commodities, the big ones.
- 19:01Oil price, such an interesting one.
- 19:04$91.43 for Brent crude oil, up 4%.
- 19:07West Texas crude, $86.84, up 4% as well.
- 19:13And copper is $5.85 per pound, which is down around about 1%.
- 19:20Bitcoin.
- 19:21Above 70,000 again, 70,300.
- 19:23That's down on the day, but it's had a good week or so.
- 19:27South African 10-year bond yield, I spoke about that earlier.
- 19:30It's 8.46%, which is up 2.5 basis points,
- 19:34but much better than it was 36 hours ago after that oil price shock.
- 19:39US 10-year, 420 again.
- 19:41That's been all over the place for such a big market.
- 19:44It's been quite big in the move department.
- 19:47S&P 500 futures more or less unchanged, 6,782 after the US CPI figure came in.
- 19:54Month-on-month 0.2% and year-on-year 2.4% up.
- 19:59What else, Scott?
- 20:00What moved on the market today?
- 20:02I see that the metals and mining index down 4.7%.
- 20:05Give us some individual stocks.
- 20:07It must be the diggers on the downside.
- 20:09Oh, no, for sure.
- 20:10I think there's no doubt.
- 20:12And you don't have to even look even further.
- 20:14Like our first conversation point for today, how many down?
- 20:1811.1%.
- 20:20Goldfields down 5.7%.
- 20:23Kumba Iron Ore 5.2%.
- 20:25Sabania Stillwater down 5%.
- 20:27Valterra down 4.4%.
- 20:30And you can continue because then to follow is just the likes of the Anglo Gold
- 20:35Sappies, Northern.
- 20:37So those are pretty much A diggers downward day for today.
- 20:38On the upside, Rainbow Chickens, not sure with a good set of results.
- 20:43They were up 5.8%, 5% up today.
- 20:48Outsurance, 4.9%.
- 20:50Hey, look at this.
- 20:51Sassl back in the top of the pops, 4.6%.
- 20:53Look at that, 160.
- 20:55It's more than tripled.
- 20:55I can't believe this thing.
- 20:57I would have sold the thing at 100.
- 20:59I would have sold it.
- 21:01Oh, hold my beer.
- 21:02Hold my beer.
- 21:03That's the reason why I do what I do and you do what you do.
- 21:05And then number five.
- 21:08And number five, I need to mention them.
