- 0:35story. I'm your host Dustin today, we
- 0:38are back in the book of Korean fairy tales by we Griffis.
- 0:42This is one of those stories about a silly Country.
- 0:44Bumpkin who has not seen a mirror before.
- 0:48Okay, let's begin. The mirror, the made trouble.
- 0:55The city of Seoul lies near the Han river which flows all the
- 0:57way across Korea, from the high mountains to the sea level to
- 1:02most Korean people in the old days when no one traveled abroad
- 1:05Soul was a center of the universe.
- 1:08All roads in the Kingdom led to this wonderful City in which
- 1:12there were big shops and stores and gay streets.
- 1:14Full of lively people in Rich clothing.
- 1:19The gentleman in there, stiffly starched in glistening, white
- 1:21clothes, walked very proudly with their heads up in the air.
- 1:25When they straddle, the little Korean ponies, which are not
- 1:28much bigger than Newfoundland dogs.
- 1:30It seemed as if elephants were trying to ride on donkeys, from
- 1:35morning to night, The Avenues were full of traffic and
- 1:37business. All the wonderful things brought
- 1:40by the Arabs from India and by the merchants from Japan and
- 1:43China could be bought in the Korean capital.
- 1:47A thousand Bulls loaded with dry grass and firewood came to the
- 1:50city Gates into Soul every day. They could be seen passing
- 1:55along, but not much beside legs and tail and horns were visible.
- 2:00At breakfast and supper time, clouds of blue smoke, rose up
- 2:03from the 10,000 low and often underground chimneys carrying
- 2:06the Heat and fire from the kitchens were good.
- 2:09Things to eat were cooked the cartloads of bags of rice,
- 2:13Millet, barley fruits and vegetables goodies and cookies
- 2:16jars and Crockery seen in the shops would make a mountain.
- 2:22Palaces pagodas temples and mansions of the Nobles and
- 2:25wealthy people made the palace in which the king lived, very
- 2:29beautiful. Well, out Beyond where the high
- 2:32stone City walls, white or covered with vines.
- 2:36When the sun dipped below the mountains, the gates were shut.
- 2:38And after that, no one could enter until morning.
- 2:44At every closing and opening of the gates, the musicians played
- 2:47Lively tunes, and the great Bell told out the time of sunrise and
- 2:50sunset. In the band, there were drums
- 2:54fife's trumpets and stringed instruments at night from inside
- 2:58the house in wine shops. One could hear the sounds of
- 3:00revelry music, song, and dancing and feasting which often lasted
- 3:04until morning. Out on the Great South Mountain,
- 3:09a mighty fire burned in the flame shot, high up into the
- 3:12air. This was the welcome message
- 3:15that all was peaceful throughout the whole Kingdom.
- 3:19On Hilltop and Mountain from the Snowy Peaks of the ever White
- 3:22Mountain, to the islands out in the Southern Sea.
- 3:24And from the East, to the West Coast, these signal fires Blaze
- 3:28Flame, answering flame, met a telegraph announcing.
- 3:30That all was well, But at 9:00 Soul Outdoors was a woman City.
- 3:37All boys and men must be off the streets.
- 3:40Any male person caught by the police would be taken to the
- 3:42magistrate's office and their receive a severe beating with a
- 3:45wooden paddles by the public spankers.
- 3:49And the women and grown-up girls old and young when Outdoors.
- 3:52Breathe the air, took their walks made their visits and had
- 3:55a delightful time with play and chat and gossip.
- 3:59But by midnight everyone must be indoors.
- 4:04It was no wonder then that in the country, the farmers in the
- 4:07village folk of the Seoul. The capital was the most
- 4:09Splendid city on earth. If they ever heard of London and
- 4:13Paris and New York, they suppose that these places on a map were
- 4:16only Villages, how was it possible that any City could
- 4:20equal or surpass Soul? Why the very idea was nonsense.
- 4:26In every Hamlet, even the children hope someday to see the
- 4:29city, often they dreamed of riding through the air on the
- 4:32dragons back in order to get there.
- 4:35It was thought that anything which a mortal man or even the
- 4:38insatiable dokkaebi should require could be bought in Seoul
- 4:43now, in a village up north, which, in English.
- 4:45We should call, Cucumber, evil lived, a Miller Mr. Kim and his
- 4:49wife, ciao. The man had worked hard for many
- 4:52years and heaped up piles of iron and Brass cash, which he
- 4:55kept hidden under the rafter beneath the roof.
- 4:59He had long intended to see the Royal City and his wife
- 5:02encouraged him for. She wanted a new dress and a
- 5:04comb and a pair of shoes such as the city people wear.
- 5:08His daughter said that they would like to have girdles or
- 5:11mind, trim slippers and silver hair pins.
- 5:14Kim felt that he must surely. Go to please both himself and
- 5:17his family. So, 15 May morning, he started
- 5:21off to walk to Seoul and see the sights.
- 5:24His wife and daughters bowing down with their faces to the
- 5:27paper carpet begged, him to bring them pretty things.
- 5:29They talked about so much and also, whatever might please
- 5:33himself. His faithful spouse.
- 5:36Paid him, beware of Thieves and robbers, and to not let his
- 5:39money lying around loose in the ends.
- 5:40By the way, when insole, he must not go into the wine shops, or
- 5:45to see the dancing girls called gisaeng, or to spend his cash
- 5:48foolishly. There were many Wicked Man about
- 5:51when she had heard that besides the polite people, there were
- 5:54boars even in the capital this she thought must surely be.
- 5:57The fact for there was a proverb that said, so, On his part Kim
- 6:02cautioned his wife since it was still chilly weather to keep the
- 6:05kitchen fires burning. So as to have the house warm and
- 6:08to not let the girls take cold, she must also beware of robbers
- 6:12he's bad man had a habit of coming after midnight when the
- 6:15fire was out and quietly loosening the stones of the
- 6:18foundation under the floor and getting inside and also into the
- 6:22rooms through the flues. The house must be well locked up
- 6:26in the door barricaded at night that no prowling leopard or
- 6:28tiger roaming around, should get in if she heard any scratching
- 6:33or clawing on the roof, she was to strike the gong.
- 6:36This would alarm the villagers and then the men would rush out
- 6:38with torches and drive away the beasts of prey.
- 6:42If she should hear the pig squealing out in the pain, she
- 6:45must sound the alarm for the Tigers love Korean pork.
- 6:48Even more than Korean people. Now Kim was a first-rate fellow
- 6:53when at home he was pretty sharp at a bargain while buying beans
- 6:56ml rice and was skillful and grinding barley or topping up
- 6:59straw for the donkeys. But once inside the walls of the
- 7:03big city, one would think he carried his head under his
- 7:06armpits, as the Koreans say, for a mid.
- 7:08So many strange sights and sounds, he was Dazed like a
- 7:11great gawk. He stood on the Main Street with
- 7:14his mouth wide open. As the crowds went by, who
- 7:18wondered where all the people came from, and how they all got
- 7:21a living, he found the saying true that there are rude people
- 7:25even in Seoul for one fellow shouted at him.
- 7:27Asking him whether he intended to swallow the moon, some of the
- 7:31boys laughed at him and said his mouth was like a bird box and
- 7:34something might fly in Kim looked at many things in these
- 7:38shops, but when he asked how much they cost he nearly
- 7:41fainted, he was truly scared at the price, and he walked on
- 7:46however, he bought some pretty things for his wife and
- 7:48daughters such as a fan role of silk for address a box of hair
- 7:51pins, some amber beads and a silver ring.
- 7:54So that when his eldest daughter was soon to Mary became a bride,
- 7:58she would have everything. Ready While in the silk shop,
- 8:02the clerk who sold him the goods.
- 8:04So that Kim was from the country and that he could have a little
- 8:06fun. So I told Kim about the fairies
- 8:09and pointed out a shop cross the way.
- 8:12They're if he looked at the round thing which the shop man
- 8:14would gladly show him, he would see.
- 8:16And feel as if he never felt her saw before at once, Kim went
- 8:21across the street and over to the shop where they made the
- 8:23metal things bright, shining polished and silvery There he
- 8:28stood in front of a round thing, like the moon in, it was a man's
- 8:31face. Who's the face of someone?
- 8:33He thought he knew it was a man about his own age, he fancied
- 8:38yet. He could not tell just who it
- 8:40was, or call him by name, but surely he had seen the person
- 8:44before. When he turned around suddenly
- 8:47hoping to surprise a friend and perhaps a neighbor from his
- 8:50hometown. There was nobody near he looked
- 8:53again. There was had his friend hate
- 8:56himself and then come back when Kim dodged he lost side of the
- 8:59face but when standing in front of this round thing, it was that
- 9:02same man again in the mirror but that is what The Shining metal
- 9:05was. When Kim laughed the fellow
- 9:09laughed to when he made a wry face or grimaces the other
- 9:13person, whoever he was, did the same, no matter how quickly Kim
- 9:17might turn around to catch him. He was gone.
- 9:21Now, Kim had never before seen a mirror and did not know what it
- 9:24could be yet. Thinking it was almost like a
- 9:27fairy magic. He bought the metal disc and
- 9:29took it back with him. When he arrived at home, he must
- 9:33first unpack, all the boxes containing the pretty things for
- 9:36the women of his family. For the girls were in patient to
- 9:38see what their father had brought them.
- 9:41They were so absorbed in their gifts that they do not notice
- 9:44what Mr. Kim had bought for himself.
- 9:47So we laid the case containing the mirror on the table and put
- 9:49some other purchases away in the big cabinet inlaid with
- 9:52mother-of-pearl that stood in the best room.
- 9:55Then he went out to look after his Mill and the pigs and the
- 9:58donkey and the bowl. No sooner had the girls opened
- 10:02the mirror case. Then the terrible things
- 10:04happened. The mother who was behind the
- 10:07daughter. Saw the face of a young woman
- 10:09and was startled at beholding, a stranger as she thought in her
- 10:12house instantly, she broke out in a fit of jealous passion.
- 10:17Your father has brought home another woman Aggie sang from
- 10:20Seoul to take my place. What does he mean?
- 10:24At the same time, the daughter seeing a face in the polished
- 10:27metal, cried out no mother who won't have any strange woman in
- 10:30Your place besides she's too young and will be a tyrant to
- 10:33us. Hearing the loud voices and
- 10:36crying. The grandmother hobbled in asked
- 10:38what was the matter. Look see for yourself, what our
- 10:42Daddy has brought home to us to make us miserable.
- 10:46Seeing the mirror, granny looked into it for a moment.
- 10:49Then she to burst out into a passion and cried out, I won't
- 10:52have this old woman in our house.
- 10:54It's enough for my son to support me and his family.
- 10:57Oh, why did he go to Seoul? By this time, there was such a
- 11:02racket with the for women. Young middle-aged and old
- 11:05crying. So lustily that each one quickly
- 11:07used up the three paper handkerchiefs of Peace before
- 11:10they could dry their tears. While still crying out legal
- 11:15eagle, very loudly grandfather, came in shaking his stick and
- 11:19ordering them to be quiet. Then looking at their streaming
- 11:22faces and dropping tears. He demanded to know the cause of
- 11:26the trouble. See, for yourself said his wife,
- 11:31then she handed him the medal Troublemaker such as never
- 11:33before, and had been seen in the village at once.
- 11:37The old man, turned almost purple with rage what he cried.
- 11:41In his creaked voice is my son. So unfilial as to bring home,
- 11:46another old man's into the house.
- 11:48How can you support two fathers? Where will he get the kimchi in
- 11:52the Millet, for the old fellow to eat, then he threw the mirror
- 11:56into its box and slam down the lid, tightly Right.
- 12:00All this time while jealousy was eating up.
- 12:02These angry people and threatening to disrupt the
- 12:05family, the noise increased, so greatly that, the husband left
- 12:08his pigs in his Mill and rushed in to see what was the matter.
- 12:13At once, his wife who was a very strong woman flew at him and
- 12:17seizing his top, not pulled him and dragged him over the floor
- 12:20and Outdoors along out into the street, never stopping till she
- 12:24reached the house of the judge to tell her troubles.
- 12:27There she made out a terrible story once in the presence of a
- 12:31great man who wore a mighty hat and had a string of amber beads
- 12:34hung over his ear. She told the story of what her
- 12:37husband had brought back from Seoul to destroy the Peace of
- 12:39his family. Surely, he meant to go back to
- 12:42the capital and have a young wife in her anger.
- 12:46Her tongue never stopped a moment.
- 12:48She charged her husband with all the crimes known in the codes.
- 12:52Yet all that she could proof against him.
- 12:54Was that he had brought back something around made of metal
- 12:56into the house. She assured the judge that it
- 12:59was as full of evil, magic is Toki be in all of his imps.
- 13:04Now, the other members of the family joined in the accusation
- 13:06of the Miller, besides supporting the wife story, they
- 13:09all declared that. It was true in every detail
- 13:11because the five witnesses all agreed in their story.
- 13:16When the flood of talk had subsided somewhat the judge, who
- 13:19meanwhile, he kept smoking on his breast, bold pipe, the stem
- 13:22of which was a yard long. While the bowl was only as big
- 13:25as a chestnut asked in what form did you say?
- 13:27This evil magic came at this, the Millers old father, produced
- 13:32The Box opened it and handed the metal mirror to the judge would
- 13:35never before seen anything like it.
- 13:38In fact, he had never been out of his district.
- 13:40Except once when he went to the examination years before and
- 13:43soul, even then he was so much with his His fellow students and
- 13:47so long, shut up in his little cell writing out his essays that
- 13:50he hardly saw anything of the city.
- 13:54When he held up the mirror before his eyes, he suddenly
- 13:56became like a demon in his rage behave, just like the other
- 14:00people in the courtroom. On the face of the round thing,
- 14:03which he held in his hand, he saw a man, an official robes
- 14:07such as only the men of eminence where he had on his head a high
- 14:11round hat like those which only magistrates will ever put on
- 14:14while on his right ear hung a string of 28 big round amber
- 14:18beads. When he held the mirror down in
- 14:21front of him, he discerned also the embroidered breast piece and
- 14:24the little silver stork that served to hold together.
- 14:26The folds of the judges code of office while around his waist
- 14:30was a decorated girdle. All this made him almost choked
- 14:34with anger at the idea of another magistrate, should come
- 14:37into the village of cucumber Ville to take his place.
- 14:40What should he himself? Do for a salary if he lost his
- 14:43position? How would he support his old
- 14:44parents in his 25? Poor relations.
- 14:47He saw himself as a pauper in his old age.
- 14:49Age. Speechless with rage.
- 14:52There was a silence in the courtroom for at least a minute.
- 14:56All looked at each other to see what would come next, but the
- 15:00piece lasted, no longer than 30 seconds for the storm.
- 15:02Broke out again, full force. When the jealous wife, seized
- 15:05her husband by his top, not to drag him home.
- 15:08She feared that the magistrate himself was so angry and jealous
- 15:12that he might adjourn. The court, just when the
- 15:14hullabaloo was at its height, a messenger, rushed into the
- 15:17courtroom to announce that the Royal inspector direct from the
- 15:20King was on his travels of observation in the province.
- 15:23Within five minutes, he would be at the Gate of the courthouse.
- 15:25House. Instantly the jealous wife like
- 15:28over husband's top. Not the magistrate called for
- 15:31order and posted his under officers in their places
- 15:34according to the etiquette of welcoming, the Kings agents,
- 15:38Then the magistrate adjusting his hat and taught now which had
- 15:41been badly tumbled in his passion.
- 15:43Went out to greet his worship, the Royal inspector.
- 15:46Salutations over he waved his hand to his Superior, to take
- 15:50the chief seat of Honor. as soon as all formalities were over the
- 15:55high officer inquired into the cause of the troubles and into
- 15:57the merits of the case, The local magistrate, put the mirror
- 16:01onto a silken cushion and handed.
- 16:03Both To His Highness. The inspector saying, please
- 16:07your worship, it is this that had turned us all into Devils a
- 16:10jealousy. What is it?
- 16:14Then this gentleman from the capital was everyday accustomed
- 16:17to the Comforts and conveniences of a great City.
- 16:19And the Splendor of the palace explained what a mirror was he
- 16:23gave them all a mild scolding for their Folly and dismissed
- 16:26them telling them that. Whenever he or she felt angry or
- 16:29jealous to go out and pull off, tops of five turnips or to
- 16:34slowly drink a cup of rice water before speaking, an angry word.
- 16:38Thereupon. The Miller's wife fell over on
- 16:40her face and beg, the pardon of her husband.
- 16:43Then all the family young and old while walking home laughed
- 16:46heartily at their mistakes. When a Korean begins to laugh,
- 16:50it is sometimes hard for him to stop but after half an hour, all
- 16:54was quiet again. After that, nearly everyone who
- 16:57could afford, it bought a mirror, all the people in the
- 17:00village sooner or later possessed one.
- 17:03They used it to look into its face.
- 17:05So often to see their own. Let the oil people carpeting in
- 17:08front of the mirror was in many houses soon.
- 17:10Worn out. In Seoul the mirror makers,
- 17:14wondered what happened in cucumber Ville The Village, so
- 17:16long famous for only it's cucumbers, but they slap their
- 17:19thighs for joy and grew Rich the end.
- 17:51Quite a few times in that story. I had to edit outer Fraser or
- 17:54change them because it was all about, oh, women talking women,
- 17:57talking as like a tiger that. And I don't really like the part
- 18:00of picking on country bumpkins is being ignorant.
- 18:03There are plenty of people who live in the countryside that are
- 18:05wise about the world. I also struggle sometimes with
- 18:08thinking that people are ignorant, they don't know
- 18:10something that I think is obvious, but then I realize that
- 18:12there's a bunch of stuff that they I know that I have no idea
- 18:15on, so I should really be more humble and compassionate.
- 18:18Still, I like how the people seeing the mirror for the first
- 18:20time, but they had all been replaced and it was a comedy of
- 18:23errors. Also sings, it's 4:20 this is
- 18:27coming out on my father's 70th birthday.
- 18:31So pops happy 70th and I love you very, very much.
- 18:37See you soon. And the podcast shout-out is to
- 18:41the endless knot hosted by Mark and Haven.
- 18:44The show marries the idea of etymology with historical
- 18:47sources that we have to go with it.
- 18:49Usually their show starts off with a cocktail, then a quick
- 18:52video where Mark explains a bunch of related word Histories
- 18:54on a theme, like, rock and roll and then Mark and even talk
- 18:58about what Classics have to say about the words and how those
- 19:00cultures influenced how those words are used today.
- 19:03They recently had one about patrons and patreons and
- 19:07bellinis and it was super cool. It's all very interesting.
- 19:10And I feel lucky to have prepared on one of their
- 19:12episodes and so if you like the Them as much as I do go and give
- 19:15them a listen or rating in a review.
- 19:19And The Listener shot out is to Southern savonia Finland, you
- 19:24are 11% of my listeners from Finland and the capital is
- 19:28micheli. It's English equivalent would be
- 19:30st. Michael's, it is the largest
- 19:32city in Southern California and is home to some very early cave.
- 19:35Paintings that show. The people have been there for
- 19:37thousands of years. There's also the location of the
- 19:40uprising in the 1500s called the cultural War.
- 19:43I used to babysit for a family with a finished father, and so I
- 19:46got to learn a little bit of finish.
- 19:49Shhhh. And I also like to listen to a
- 19:51polenta and so I hope I don't put you this too much, ketose,
- 19:55yahuveh, yatta, Thank you and goodnight.
- 19:58Thank you and goodnight.
