Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we'd like to call the after party. This,
- 0:33Speaker 1: as you know, is the show after the show, the
- 0:35Speaker 1: party after the party, the bridge to get you from
- 0:37Speaker 1: one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard
- 0:41Speaker 1: to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we're talking
- 0:43Speaker 1: about the past episode of disgrace Land on The Mama's
- 0:45Speaker 1: and the papas Mama Cass Elliott Part two, and specifically
- 0:49Speaker 1: about our relationship to the previous disgrace Land episode subject
- 0:52Speaker 1: Charles Manson. We are also discussing favorite holiday songs, favorite
- 0:56Speaker 1: holiday movies, a ton of your voicemails and messages, and
- 0:59Speaker 1: a whole rosie to round us out. All right, before
- 1:02Speaker 1: we get to listener calls, text and emails, let's get
- 1:05Speaker 1: into it.
- 1:21Speaker 2: All right, guys, Before.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I get into the meat and potatoes part of this
- 1:24Speaker 1: bonus episode. It being the holiday season, I have a
- 1:27Speaker 1: couple quick and simple questions for you to respond to.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Number one, what's your favorite holiday slash Christmas song of
- 1:33Speaker 1: all time? My current one? You ask Ella FitzGeralds, what
- 1:36Speaker 1: are you doing for Christmas Eve?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Number two?
- 1:39Speaker 1: What is your favorite holiday slash Christmas movie of all time?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Mine?
- 1:43Speaker 1: If you're telling me Good Fellas isn't a Christmas movie,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you're wrong, by the way it is. Then I have
- 1:47Speaker 1: to say trading places. But I kind of also want
- 1:49Speaker 1: to say bad Santa. Hit me at Disgrace slam pod
- 1:52Speaker 1: on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook with your answers and
- 1:55Speaker 1: call and leave a voicemail or text me at six
- 1:58Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six three eight with your answers.
- 2:02Speaker 2: All right back to the after party.
- 2:05Speaker 1: This past episode of Disgraceland was a conclusion to the
- 2:07Speaker 1: previous week's episode on Mama cass Elliott. Both parts of
- 2:11Speaker 1: the cast episodes were preceded by the episode on Charles
- 2:13Speaker 1: Manson's musical career. All three episodes composed of the larger
- 2:17Speaker 1: story I attempted to tell, which without reporting all the
- 2:19Speaker 1: detail from those episodes here is basically this the motive
- 2:24Speaker 1: district Attorney Vincent Buliosi pinned on Charles Manson for the
- 2:27Speaker 1: so called helter Skelter murders rested on the theory that
- 2:30Speaker 1: Manson was a failed musician whose career aspirations were rebuffed
- 2:34Speaker 1: by big shot record producer Terry Melcher, who's house Sharon
- 2:37Speaker 1: Tate lived in, where an angered Charles Manson sent his
- 2:40Speaker 1: followers to kill Terry Melcher. They then found Sharon Tate
- 2:43Speaker 1: at home instead, and savagely murdered her and her friends
- 2:46Speaker 1: in place of Melcher. There is, of course, a lot
- 2:49Speaker 1: more to Buliosi's story than.
- 2:51Speaker 2: That, but that's the gist.
- 2:53Speaker 1: However, as I mentioned in my episodes, this theory is
- 2:57Speaker 1: flawed for many reasons, some of which center around cass Elliott,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and all of which can be found, as I've mentioned
- 3:03Speaker 1: numerous times in Tom O'Neill's book Chaos. These past three
- 3:07Speaker 1: episodes are going to put an end to my exploration
- 3:09Speaker 1: into Charles Manson. I need to move on for a bit. Anyways,
- 3:13Speaker 1: the psychopath has been well covered in Disgraceland and in
- 3:15Speaker 1: bad Lands, and if you're keeping count at home, we've
- 3:18Speaker 1: done I think, I don't know six.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Seven episodes on Charlie.
- 3:21Speaker 1: At least, there's two episodes from Disgraceland on the Beach Boys.
- 3:25Speaker 1: There is these two episodes on cass Elliott that's four.
- 3:28Speaker 1: There's two bad Lands episodes on Sharon Tate that are
- 3:31Speaker 1: set pieces to the cast episodes.
- 3:33Speaker 2: That's six.
- 3:34Speaker 1: And of course there's one on Charles Manson himself that
- 3:37Speaker 1: I mentioned before. That's seven. And there's a future episode
- 3:40Speaker 1: of Badlands on Roman Polanski that's in the can for
- 3:43Speaker 1: next year. So that's eight episodes on Manson alone. Creepy
- 3:47Speaker 1: little wizard. I gotta move on from him. I got
- 3:49Speaker 1: to I'm done for now. Anyways, what a wormhole. I
- 3:52Speaker 1: hope you enjoyed this little exploration we did, of course,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but I have other stories I want to tell. I
- 3:57Speaker 1: should probably tell you a little bit about what's coming
- 3:59Speaker 1: into twenty twenty three, lots more stories from Disgraceland for starters,
- 4:03Speaker 1: a ton more. I'll go into full on season eleven
- 4:06Speaker 1: preview mode in one of the next episodes of After Party.
- 4:09Speaker 1: But for the time being, I can tell you that
- 4:11Speaker 1: I am more excited, literally legitimately, more excited than I
- 4:15Speaker 1: have ever been about any Disgraceland episodes previous, particularly the
- 4:20Speaker 1: ones I've written on ac DC, Bruce Springsteen, and Lou Reed.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And this is just a small sample of what's to come.
- 4:26Speaker 1: We have a full year of Disgraceland content pretty much
- 4:29Speaker 1: in the can, and there's some exciting news on the
- 4:31Speaker 1: various ways we're going to be making the content available
- 4:33Speaker 1: to you and everyone else just over the horizon, so
- 4:36Speaker 1: make sure to keep your ears open. And more on
- 4:39Speaker 1: that in just a bit, all right. My new favorite
- 5:01Speaker 1: part of the show when I get to hear from
- 5:03Speaker 1: you guys, you know the drill. Write me at Disgraceland
- 5:06Speaker 1: Pod on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok or Facebook, or Disgracelandpod at
- 5:10Speaker 1: gmail dot com, and of course you can call or
- 5:13Speaker 1: text me at six one seven nine oh six six
- 5:17Speaker 1: six three eight. Lots and lots of dms. Regarding the
- 5:21Speaker 1: Badlands episode on the infamous Hillsborough disaster, check out the
- 5:25Speaker 1: Badlands feed for that story if you have not already.
- 5:28Speaker 1: I just wanted to mention that and hit on this
- 5:30Speaker 1: one bad Lands comment before specifically getting into these Disgraceland comments,
- 5:34Speaker 1: mainly because the Double Elvis team does an amazing job
- 5:38Speaker 1: on bad Lands and on everything they do, really, but
- 5:40Speaker 1: I wanted to shout them out here and I want
- 5:42Speaker 1: them to hear this. So on the Hillsborough disaster, episode.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Neil Golding writes, Hey, Jake, I was born in Liverpool
- 5:49Speaker 1: and live in Sydney. I listened to your Hillsboro pod
- 5:52Speaker 1: hoping that you had the right information. I couldn't have
- 5:54Speaker 1: been happier with your portrayal of my wonderful hometown. It's friendly,
- 5:58Speaker 1: welcoming people in the horrible injustice thrown at them. Thankfully
- 6:03Speaker 1: they picked on the wrong city. So proud of the
- 6:05Speaker 1: fight for the now ninety seven. Thank you for bringing
- 6:07Speaker 1: this to a wider audience. I'm not ashamed to say
- 6:10Speaker 1: I cried through a lot of it and have tears
- 6:12Speaker 1: in my eyes now. Reading each name was a poignant touch.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Thank you, Neil. I don't even know what to say
- 6:20Speaker 1: to that, Neil, Thanks for writing that episode was a
- 6:23Speaker 1: special one for us. We obviously did it around the
- 6:26Speaker 1: time of the World Cup that's happening right now, and
- 6:29Speaker 1: we wanted to treat that story in particular with the
- 6:31Speaker 1: appropriate amount of God, I don't even know correct emotional intent.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I don't even know how to say it. We just
- 6:38Speaker 1: wanted to be really careful. We know that that story
- 6:40Speaker 1: matters a lot to a lot of people, so I'm
- 6:42Speaker 1: happy to hear that.
- 6:43Speaker 2: You dug it.
- 6:44Speaker 1: If you guys have not heard bad Lands or the
- 6:46Speaker 1: bad Lands episode on the Hillsborough disaster, I encourage you
- 6:49Speaker 1: to go check that out in.
- 6:50Speaker 2: The bad Lands feed.
- 6:51Speaker 1: All right, Moving on to Disgraceland, we got a DM
- 6:54Speaker 1: from David Caseman on Instagram asking for a Chromags episode.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I'd love to, but that story seems way too messed up,
- 7:03Speaker 1: and I'd probably only do it with John Joseph's blessing.
- 7:06Speaker 1: But even then, I'm not sure I want to insert
- 7:08Speaker 1: myself into that hornet's nest. At logan all Read on
- 7:12Speaker 1: Twitter rights two years, eight months and ten days later,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I found out this was an April fool's joke. I
- 7:18Speaker 1: don't know how I fell for this. Logan is, of
- 7:20Speaker 1: course referencing our John Denver episode. This is the joke
- 7:23Speaker 1: that keeps on giving. Sorry not sorry, logan at mister
- 7:27Speaker 1: m Schumacher Rights on Twitter in response to the Last
- 7:30Speaker 1: After Party episode where I talked about the generation gap
- 7:34Speaker 1: a music taste between myself and my dad at mister
- 7:37Speaker 1: M Schumacher Rights. As a fellow gen xer, I had
- 7:40Speaker 1: similar experiences with my dad and music. I was in
- 7:43Speaker 1: the Slayer Metallica Suicidal tendencies, dri etc. Much like you
- 7:48Speaker 1: in trying to bridge the gap with my kid. We've
- 7:50Speaker 1: been to ten plus concerts together before his twelve birthday.
- 7:54Speaker 1: That's awesome, man. I'm going to try to bring my
- 7:56Speaker 1: boys to see Metallica next year. I think nine to
- 7:59Speaker 1: five of our appropriate ages. Of course, this will backfire.
- 8:03Speaker 1: They'll grow up listening to Vivadi or Schumer or some
- 8:06Speaker 1: classical stuff I don't even know about. Not that that's
- 8:09Speaker 1: actually a backfire, it's not. I really don't care at
- 8:11Speaker 1: all what my kids listen to. Truth be told, I
- 8:13Speaker 1: don't even care that they like music, as long as
- 8:15Speaker 1: they're into something and are interested in something. As long
- 8:19Speaker 1: as they're interested, I don't have anything to worry on
- 8:22Speaker 1: that front, though, So I guess it's off to Metallica
- 8:24Speaker 1: we go. Ryan from the nine oh nine jumped on
- 8:27Speaker 1: the voicemail regarding our ongoing conversation about covers that are
- 8:30Speaker 1: better than the originals, and here's what Ryan had to say.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Hi, Jake, this is Ryan from Sody, California. I've been
- 8:37Speaker 3: a huge fan of District Plan since season one.
- 8:41Speaker 4: My favorite episode was the same Cook episode. I think
- 8:45Speaker 4: that was the first one I heard and I was
- 8:46Speaker 4: blown away by your production and the way you talk
- 8:49Speaker 4: and the way you told a story about something I've
- 8:50Speaker 4: never heard before. I love your deal stuff, A huge
- 8:53Speaker 4: deal fan, and regarding your last backstage episode, the best
- 8:58Speaker 4: cover or the cover that's the best than the original,
- 9:01Speaker 4: let's starts the original is Stevie wonder as we can
- 9:03Speaker 4: work it out?
- 9:04Speaker 3: That is ubiquitous. I think everybody can agree with that.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Keep up the good work. Thanks for than you do.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I can't really argue with Ryan Stevie's cover we can
- 9:13Speaker 1: work it out might be better than the Beatles' original.
- 9:16Speaker 2: It really might. I think it is.
- 9:18Speaker 1: What else do you guys got on the covers versus originals?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Debate?
- 9:21Speaker 1: Hit me up on TikTok. We got lots of comments
- 9:24Speaker 1: on this at Rockhart says Quicksand how soon is now?
- 9:28Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, I dig the Smiths, but damn
- 9:30Speaker 1: I love the cover and I got to agree.
- 9:32Speaker 5: Man.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I'd never even heard the Smiths or the Smith's version
- 9:37Speaker 1: until I heard the Quicksand version, and that cover actually
- 9:39Speaker 1: turned me into an eventual full fledged Smith's fan.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Like I said, a lot.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Of debate on the subject over on our TikTok page
- 9:47Speaker 1: at this Gracelaind pod go check that out. Gregory from
- 9:50Speaker 1: the four to one two hits us up to talk
- 9:52Speaker 1: about some of our recent past episodes and some suggestions
- 9:57Speaker 1: on future episodes. Here's what Gregory had to say.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Hey, Jake, this is Gregory Daven's Love, and I have
- 10:04Speaker 3: a few suggestions for you for you for your show.
- 10:08Speaker 3: First of all, I want to tell you that I
- 10:10Speaker 3: fucking dig your shit. Man. I love it. I think
- 10:13Speaker 3: it's fascinating and I had no idea how many of
- 10:18Speaker 3: the rock stars and just actors that I love so much,
- 10:22Speaker 3: how scandalous they could be. And I just want to
- 10:25Speaker 3: thank you for bringing that to the light. Okay, So,
- 10:30Speaker 3: first of all, I love the Laurel Canyon shit. I've
- 10:33Speaker 3: just fascinated with it. And I love that one you
- 10:37Speaker 3: just did on Mama Cast and I can't wait for
- 10:39Speaker 3: part two. But I would love to see some shit
- 10:42Speaker 3: from Frank Zappa's perspective. Okay. Number two, this one's going
- 10:46Speaker 3: to freak you out, Nicolo Paganini. That's all I got
- 10:50Speaker 3: to say. Number three George Clinton. And number four one
- 10:55Speaker 3: that's very near and dear to my heart, Chris Cornell.
- 11:00Speaker 3: If you could do what you did with man Limonroe.
- 11:03Speaker 3: You know how you got there and you just freeaking.
- 11:06Speaker 3: I don't know how. I don't know how you do it,
- 11:07Speaker 3: but you did it. If you could do that with
- 11:10Speaker 3: Chris Cornell and what happened with him and whatever's going
- 11:15Speaker 3: on with that wife he had, he could get in
- 11:17Speaker 3: there and do your thing, brother, I'd appreciate it. Much
- 11:20Speaker 3: love to you, be blessed.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Dude.
- 11:23Speaker 1: Who is Nikolo Paganini? I know I could just google
- 11:27Speaker 1: this and find out, but honestly, I got a lot
- 11:29Speaker 1: of shit to do this morning, so I'm just asking
- 11:31Speaker 1: the question. I don't know who that is, but tell
- 11:33Speaker 1: me get back to me. And yes, there are episodes
- 11:36Speaker 1: on Zappa and George Clinton for sure that are coming.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I don't know when, but soon ish. So thanks Gregory.
- 11:43Speaker 1: You guys know you can be like Gregory and text
- 11:45Speaker 1: me or call me and leave a voicemail whenever you
- 11:48Speaker 1: want with your suggestions for disgrace land subjects. That's six
- 11:51Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Just
- 11:55Speaker 1: notice there's three fucking sixes in that phone number. I
- 11:57Speaker 1: don't know that I like that, and they're all in
- 11:59Speaker 1: a row.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Damn it.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Chad from way up in Canada in the Dumas Flats.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I think that's what he said. I think that's how
- 12:04Speaker 1: you say that. Is that a thing I did google
- 12:06Speaker 1: that I couldn't find it? Let me know, I don't
- 12:08Speaker 1: know why Canada geography do mass flats. Anyways, Chad from
- 12:13Speaker 1: way up north left us his voicemail with an excellent suggestion.
- 12:18Speaker 5: Hey, Jake's this is Chad calling from Yarrow, British Columbia
- 12:24Speaker 5: up in the frigid dou Mass Flats in Canada right now.
- 12:29Speaker 4: I think it would be really cool to go super
- 12:34Speaker 4: old school and do an episode on Mozart his.
- 12:39Speaker 5: Challenging up the Crown and the Church of the Day.
- 12:45Speaker 3: It's pretty epic.
- 12:47Speaker 5: I think, like one of the original d d yis
- 12:51Speaker 5: as far as musicians go making money.
- 12:55Speaker 3: Back in those days, do you need.
- 12:57Speaker 5: You needed the support of the Church for the Crown
- 13:00Speaker 5: and he basically you know, has stuck his middle finger
- 13:03Speaker 5: up to both of them, let alone like his notorious
- 13:07Speaker 5: reputation for just being like.
- 13:11Speaker 3: Like a sexualized like deviant and freak.
- 13:16Speaker 5: But other than that, it would probably make a cool episode.
- 13:20Speaker 5: And listening to Swindled, which is man other than like
- 13:25Speaker 5: the podcasts that I get into on U double Elvis,
- 13:30Speaker 5: which I love all of them. Swindled is is just.
- 13:35Speaker 3: It's The stories are incredible.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Great suggestion, Chad, not only a suggestion on a subject,
- 13:41Speaker 1: but an angle as well. I had no idea about
- 13:45Speaker 1: the diy aspect of Mozart. I must have missed that
- 13:50Speaker 1: in the Amadeis movie. Wait is that I'm mosa Yeah
- 13:53Speaker 1: that's mosar Amadas Wolfgan Amadeus Mozart. Great movie, as I recall,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I have not seen that in years, but now I'm
- 14:01Speaker 1: gonna go watch it again.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Who knew, so I'm going to get into it. I
- 14:04Speaker 2: love this idea.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I know the classical guys were entirely fucked up too,
- 14:09Speaker 1: just as messed up as the rock stars.
- 14:10Speaker 2: So probably delve into that.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Just take a slow weight into the classical water like
- 14:17Speaker 1: I've been doing with jazz musicians lately. Maybe I'll kick
- 14:21Speaker 1: it all off with Mozart. I love that shout out
- 14:23Speaker 1: to Swindled as well. I think you mentioned Swindled in
- 14:25Speaker 1: that clip. Great podcast. So many texts on the cover
- 14:29Speaker 1: versus originals debate, just a gazillion of them. From the
- 14:32Speaker 1: eight oh one dinosaurs shown me the way over Peter
- 14:34Speaker 1: Frampton's Yes, I definitely agree with that. From the four
- 14:38Speaker 1: to Roho four jone Jets, Crimson and Clover over the
- 14:40Speaker 1: Tommy James original. I definitely don't agree with that one,
- 14:43Speaker 1: but I do like Jon Jets version. I loved it
- 14:45Speaker 1: when I was a little kid. That's just a smattering.
- 14:47Speaker 1: You guys are killing it on the text machine.
- 14:49Speaker 2: Keep them coming.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I'll leave you with this one from the two to
- 14:56Speaker 1: one zero. Hey, Jake, love both shows. Listening to the
- 14:59Speaker 1: man since Slash Sharonate, Slash Mama cast episodes and a
- 15:03Speaker 1: binge and I'm loving them all. You may find it
- 15:06Speaker 1: interesting to know that my grandfather was a psychologist for
- 15:09Speaker 1: the California Parole Board and that he got to interview
- 15:12Speaker 1: Manson in the mid eighties. By the way, this is
- 15:14Speaker 1: the Texter saying this. This is not me saying this
- 15:16Speaker 1: about my grandfather. The Texter goes on to say that, quote,
- 15:19Speaker 1: my grandfather was of the belief that old Charlie was
- 15:23Speaker 1: quite a bit more lucid and shrewd than you'd have
- 15:25Speaker 1: generally thought. Granted he was still quote unquote super screwy.
- 15:28Speaker 1: My grandpa's words, and again that's the Texter's grandpa, not mine.
- 15:32Speaker 2: So there you have it.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Manson was more lucid than we thought. I love this text.
- 15:36Speaker 1: If you haven't heard the recent episodes on Charles Manson
- 15:39Speaker 1: and Cass Elliott and helped the Skelter, go check them
- 15:41Speaker 1: out and again call or text me six one seven
- 15:44Speaker 1: nine zero six six six three eight or hit me
- 15:47Speaker 1: up at disgracelam pod on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook
- 15:51Speaker 1: and email me disgracelampod at gmail dot com more in
- 15:57Speaker 1: a bit. Alrighty, welcome back. This is the recommendations part
- 16:15Speaker 1: of the show. I recently read or heard somewhere over
- 16:19Speaker 1: the past couple weeks. And forgive me because I cannot
- 16:22Speaker 1: remember where I got this quote, and I'm.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Probably gonna butcher it.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But someone quoted Martin Scorsese as saying something to the
- 16:28Speaker 1: effective quote as creators, No no quote, because I'm butchering
- 16:32Speaker 1: it paraphrase at best. Scorsese says something like, as creators,
- 16:37Speaker 1: it's our job to make our audiences obsessed with what
- 16:40Speaker 1: we are obsessed with.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I love that quote. I love that it's so true.
- 16:46Speaker 1: I try to do that in the episodes of disgrace
- 16:49Speaker 1: Land that I create, there are all these sometimes subtle,
- 16:51Speaker 1: sometimes overt references to the music, books and the films.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That I love.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You know, who else does that? Seinfeld does that, and
- 16:58Speaker 1: it's fucking great. I'm not I'm not elevating what I
- 17:03Speaker 1: do or equating what I do to to one of
- 17:06Speaker 1: the greatest television shows of all time. But it's one
- 17:08Speaker 1: of the things that I love about that show is
- 17:10Speaker 1: there's all these little references, you know, the Frank Castanza,
- 17:14Speaker 1: you know, cooking in Korea and they're playing the music
- 17:16Speaker 1: from Platoon.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Uh, there's all kinds of stuff.
- 17:21Speaker 1: But it's just it's something that I love doing, and
- 17:23Speaker 1: like I said, I do it subtly and sometimes I
- 17:25Speaker 1: do it overtly. And it's so true that quote is that,
- 17:29Speaker 1: you know, as creators, it's our job to make our
- 17:31Speaker 1: audience as obsessed with what we are obsessed with. And
- 17:34Speaker 1: I think if you can do that, you can really
- 17:36Speaker 1: you can really go on this ride together with your audience,
- 17:39Speaker 1: which is what I like to think we're doing. And
- 17:41Speaker 1: that's really what this little section of the bonus episode
- 17:44Speaker 1: is all about. What I'm reading, what I'm watching, and
- 17:46Speaker 1: what I'm listening to and it's a two way street.
- 17:48Speaker 1: I want to know what you guys are into, because
- 17:50Speaker 1: I need stuff to feed the beast. It's all fuel.
- 17:53Speaker 1: So you can hit me up with your recommendations at
- 17:55Speaker 1: this Gray slamdpod and of course at the number I
- 17:57Speaker 1: keep mentioning six one seven nine oh six six six
- 17:59Speaker 1: three eight. So last week I went into this long
- 18:03Speaker 1: bit about the exhaustive movie list that we created to
- 18:06Speaker 1: help inform our movie watching, like I'm a member of
- 18:09Speaker 1: AFI or whatever.
- 18:10Speaker 5: You know.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Hitchcock, Spielberg, Scorsese, the Coen Brothers, Tarantino, pt and Wes Anderson.
- 18:15Speaker 1: That massive list with all those movies from these amazing creators,
- 18:19Speaker 1: these amazing directors and these dudes that reference that are
- 18:22Speaker 1: all laid out in chronological order, and all the movies
- 18:25Speaker 1: reference each other. This list that my wife and I
- 18:27Speaker 1: are working through again chronologically. The last after Party episode,
- 18:31Speaker 1: I mentioned that I recently watched Scorsese's Who's that Knocking
- 18:34Speaker 1: at My Door, Hitchcock's Marnie, and how Hitchcock's Topaz was
- 18:38Speaker 1: up next. You know what I watched for movies since
- 18:40Speaker 1: we last spoke, Honey, I shrunk the kids with Rick
- 18:43Speaker 1: Moranis and home alone. Sometimes being a dad supersedes your
- 18:47Speaker 1: pretentious movie watching endeavors, but whatever, it's cool. I did
- 18:51Speaker 1: manage to watch Robert Mitcham in Night of the Hunter,
- 18:55Speaker 1: but that was due to work part of the research
- 18:57Speaker 1: for the Springsteen episode that I recently researching Springsteen also
- 19:02Speaker 1: led me to the writing of Flannery O'Connor. I recently
- 19:05Speaker 1: read A good Man is hard to find that story,
- 19:09Speaker 1: the Mitcham story. They are, as my friend Tiller says
- 19:12Speaker 1: in conversation with each other. I spent Saturday night next
- 19:16Speaker 1: to my Christmas tree with the knob Creek Rye in
- 19:18Speaker 1: Flannery O'Connor's Prayer Journal, a little book of prayers that
- 19:21Speaker 1: she wrote. Watching someone else wrestle with their faith on
- 19:25Speaker 1: an intimate level is fascinating to me for some reason,
- 19:28Speaker 1: probably because I continue the endless work of exploring my
- 19:31Speaker 1: own faith. So it's this really compelling thing. This book
- 19:34Speaker 1: Flannery O'Connor, a prayer Journal. Check it out if you're
- 19:38Speaker 1: at all interested in that sort of thing. And if
- 19:39Speaker 1: you're not, whatever, that's cool too. That read and that
- 19:42Speaker 1: rye was soundtracked by a nineteen fifty nine copy of
- 19:46Speaker 1: Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Pops Christmas Party, which
- 19:50Speaker 1: I bought for a buck at Stereo Jackson, Cambridge, and
- 19:53Speaker 1: that sounds excellent on my turntable.
- 19:56Speaker 2: It's really good.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Use of a dollar bill, I gotta say, plus the
- 20:00Speaker 1: five cents tax. Our family is going to see the
- 20:03Speaker 1: Boston Pops this Christmas, and I'm really stoked about it.
- 20:05Speaker 1: My kids' minds are going to be blown by the
- 20:08Speaker 1: scale and sound of this thing. I cannot wait. This
- 20:11Speaker 1: is an excellent gift for my in laws. I'm super grateful.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I'm also I'm super grateful for all you guys. Twenty
- 20:17Speaker 1: twenty two wraps our fourth calendar year together. I say
- 20:21Speaker 1: it all the time, but what a ride. Thank you
- 20:23Speaker 1: for the support that listens, the streams, that downloads, DMS, texts, emails, letters, voicemails.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Thank you for staying connected, for giving a shit, for
- 20:32Speaker 1: giving me my dream job. February twenty twenty three will
- 20:36Speaker 1: be the five year anniversary of Disgrace Land. Those five
- 20:38Speaker 1: years flew by, and I am very much looking forward
- 20:42Speaker 1: to what the next five bring for us. All more
- 20:44Speaker 1: on that in the coming weeks. Happy holidays, and Merry
- 20:47Speaker 1: Christmas and back after this all right discos. This brings
- 21:09Speaker 1: another bonus episode of Disgraceland to an end. Thank you
- 21:12Speaker 1: for listening. Keep your ears glued to the Disgraceland feed
- 21:16Speaker 1: over the coming weeks here as we get through this holiday,
- 21:18Speaker 1: we've got some important announcements on the coming year and
- 21:22Speaker 1: some bonus content coming your way. Have a safe rest
- 21:25Speaker 1: of your week, enjoy your friends and your family this Christmas,
- 21:28Speaker 1: and by all means, hit me up if you feel
- 21:30Speaker 1: like blabbing six one seven nine oh six sixty six
