Transcript
- 0:31Hello, I'm Connor A Keen. I played drums for Triple Kill. Hello,
- 0:35I'm Ethan I played bass for Triple Kill. And we've got an album
- 0:40dropping on the twenty fifth of August, Black and Dawn. It's all happening
- 0:44then, Oh, thanks for joining us to save me. I think I
- 0:49had a problem, Chris, thanks for having us pleasure say, as you
- 0:52mentioned, Triple Kill will unleash your new album, Black and Dawn this Friday,
- 0:55August at twenty fifth. So how you feel about it? Ah X,
- 1:00It's an understatement for sure, but also geez exhausted and we're not even
- 1:07touring yet. The amount of work we've put in behind the scenes to get
- 1:11this thing out is it's a lot, you know, especially especially in this
- 1:18last month. I think we've we've put out like three music videos in the
- 1:21last months while also practicing and getting ready for tour. So and never friends,
- 1:29it's possible. Way, So tell us a bit more about the album
- 1:33from a musical point of view and what you're going forward with it. Okay,
- 1:36at least do you want to just start start us on that one?
- 1:38Yeah? Okay, well yeah, we wanted to obviously advance our own skills
- 1:44so having that that thing that kept us all locked inside for a couple of
- 1:48years, it really allowed us to kind of take a moment practice what we've
- 1:53got and kind of develop some new skills or try some more challenging things that
- 1:59we hadn't touched on before in the way of at least writing something. So
- 2:02this album is definitely from a musical standpoint, is something that we have advanced
- 2:08on, something something news for us, something a bit more challenging in the
- 2:13way of our writing. And then the themes are just things that we love,
- 2:16which I think kind of you'd be good to expand on that one.
- 2:20Yeah, yeah, sure, so yeah, I think along with what Ethan
- 2:24said, we've certainly tried to have this album be a step up for us
- 2:30musically and in each of our own departments, while also looking back at the
- 2:37stuff that we really like about the first album, the stuff that we feel
- 2:39like has stood the test of time, and expand up on those kind of
- 2:46hone in on the stuff that we feel like worked the most in the first
- 2:49album. And also, I mean again Ethan alluded to the whole you know,
- 2:55global pandemic malarkey, and it did leave us with a lot of time
- 3:00to kind of reflect on this triple kill thing and what we want to do
- 3:06with it next and the I guess validity and necessity of what we do.
- 3:13We we write really escapists, kind of fun first music, but after you
- 3:20know, the pandemic and everything, and after we all kind of felt a
- 3:23little bit at sea personally and collectively, we found ourselves going is that enough
- 3:29and ultimately decided like, yes, escapism is great, and it's it's something
- 3:34that we've all gotten a lot out of. So we still want to write
- 3:38music that's largely inspired by you know, movies and comic books and video games
- 3:43and the stuff that we love. But we we want to be able to
- 3:46accurately kind of capture or nail down what exactly we love about those properties,
- 3:54what we've thought was what reached us, you know, what we felt was
- 4:00vital or life affirming or just exciting about it, and have that be reflected
- 4:04in the in the in the music and in the lyrics. More so than
- 4:10the first album. I think the first album will kind of content to just
- 4:13go this is a cool lyric, and it's about this. This time,
- 4:15we kind of sat with the why of it all a little bit more and
- 4:20it was fun. It was it was a great way to write. It
- 4:23was the first time I think we wrote with real intent, and I think
- 4:25it comes across so far in the responses that we've gotten from music that we've
- 4:30released so far, or you know, stuff that we've shown to friends,
- 4:33they've gone, oh it really feels like this, or I really get the
- 4:35sense of this from this music, and it's like, oh my god,
- 4:39you know, maybe we're not hacks. The album opens with the title track
- 4:46and an extended intro. There's delicate, ambient and dreamy like three things that
- 4:50Triple Killed definitely are not. So what was the thought process behind starting Yeah,
- 4:57that's really cool, thank you. I think the thought process there was
- 5:02kind of deliberately wanting to do that to showcase a different side of us,
- 5:11and I don't know, give it, give it a go, like see,
- 5:14like, hey, can we can we do this? And in practice
- 5:16we found I think we can. Like we really like the way that the
- 5:20album opens, and it's it's been exciting to show people little little glimpses of
- 5:28that side of us so far and have them, I mean, not outwardly
- 5:32rejected. Good. I think I like what you did with it too,
- 5:39Like because a lot of bands are sort of doing that lately, like they're
- 5:42putting something a bit left to center to start the album and then going into
- 5:45their normal stuff. But they do that as just like a minute minute and
- 5:47a half intro and then go into the next song. But you actually weave
- 5:50it into the first song, so so to six minutes long. But it's
- 5:55a different touch to to sort of turn it into a song having it just
- 5:58to stand alone entity. Yeah, well we've done the standalone in stro Thing.
- 6:02We did that for the EP, and we did it for the first
- 6:04album. And as much as I mean, I think a lot of the
- 6:11first album and especially the EP was written with inner room kind of jamming stuff
- 6:15out and just going with what felt good, not necessarily considering if it was
- 6:20if the story of the song necessitated that part being there or whatever. Whereas
- 6:27we had a clear idea of what the first track was going to be about
- 6:30and the story that we wanted it to tell, and the character that is
- 6:34kind of that Rodney's singing from the perspective of is at his lowest point at
- 6:39the start of the song, so it kind of made sense to start there
- 6:42and then build it up. We wanted it to be like a I don't
- 6:46know, I guess representative of our own states of mind during the lockdown,
- 6:50and certainly we keep saying like during the pandemic and stuff, and that it
- 6:56stuck with us right up until I think I've really only shook the the emotional
- 7:02hangover of those couple of years in the last couple of months maybe, So
- 7:08we wanted the start of the song to kind of reflect that, but then
- 7:11build into something hopeful and yeah, uplifting. So from a personal point of
- 7:19view, we'll ask if you guys separately on this one, but from a
- 7:21personal point of view, how does the album? How is it an improvement
- 7:27on your debut? H Ethan July to get first? Yeah, yeah,
- 7:33yeah, great, yeah, good job. Well, I mean from a
- 7:40personal perspective for myself, when it was joining Triple Kill with the EP,
- 7:46I was just there to kind of be like, I was really excited to
- 7:49be a part of a band again, really excited to just kind of play
- 7:53the tunes, and I was just kind of following along with what was kind
- 7:58of already written and what we had been doing as a group. So it
- 8:01was just kind of following whatever the guitars do or anything like that, whereas
- 8:03I'm just the bassist. I'm just going to follow that. When we hit
- 8:07onto Age Rebellion, it was more simple playing because I wanted to think about
- 8:13how We're going to do this live and how I'm going to be able to
- 8:16be able to do backup vocals or like, keeping that simplicity there to get
- 8:20myself through it when we were Then with this album, I really wanted to
- 8:26give myself more of a challenge. I'm good at my instrument, I'm good
- 8:31at what I do, and I can do that live. Why why should
- 8:33I be trying to hinder myself? And I really pushed through with some new
- 8:39techniques, new interesting things that I hadn't done before, and felt more inclined
- 8:43to speak up and kind of put my thoughts and what I wanted to write
- 8:50into my pieces, which I feel like it has come off really well,
- 8:52And I feel a lot more attached to this album on an emotional level than
- 8:58I get I had with the previous ones, Like I still love our previous
- 9:01work and I will forever, but there's something that's just got me more attached
- 9:07to this music with this album. Yeah. Nice, Yeah, I think
- 9:15I think everybody's really gone that that extra mile to make sure that their individual
- 9:22parts were pushing there, you know, their skill set forward. Oh man,
- 9:30Well yeah, fundamentally. Instrumentally it's it's it's the best stuff we've ever
- 9:33written. And I think again coming back to that writing with intent and that
- 9:41intent being kind of like stick in the landing for the most part by the
- 9:46sounds of it, I think that's something that the previous album just didn't really
- 9:54have. The intent was fundamentally just like, hey, this is fun.
- 9:58We hope it makes people move, and it did that, but anything else
- 10:03I think that people got out of the music, It was like not necessarily
- 10:09on the page, you know, which is that's that's half the fun of
- 10:13releasing art is seeing what other people get out of it. But yeah,
- 10:16this time, a more concerted effort was made to capture something about each of
- 10:22these these properties that we like and make sure that that was in the song
- 10:26and was on the page. And I'm proud of that for sure. That's
- 10:33that's something I excited to take into the future releases as well. That kind
- 10:37of mindset and that approach cool and you guys also recently supported night Flight Orchestra
- 10:43in Melbourne and say how is that insane? Oh my god, Yeah,
- 10:50man, wonderful, so wonderful. I mean we already had tickets as as
- 10:54fans of the band to see that show anyway, so when we up the
- 11:00email, we were all like giddy with excitement to be supporting, you know,
- 11:05let alone direct support for them. Yeah, yeah, yeah, do
- 11:09you want to add anything? It was just like probably one of my highlights
- 11:16for being in this band is just getting to being able to have played the
- 11:20show and then getting praise after like having the drummer of Night Flat Orchestra come
- 11:26up and like just sit there with me for a good like fifteen twenty minutes
- 11:31as we were just talking back and forth about like what he was doing with
- 11:33the tour and stuff, and then he just had nothing but just really nice
- 11:37things to say. He was apparently like he was up the back upstairs of
- 11:39Max Watts and he was just watching through the curtains for everything that we did,
- 11:43and he just loved our energy, loved what we were doing, and
- 11:48he said he felt like he was a part, like he was a part
- 11:50of the crowd, and I was just like, that's that's the nice stuff
- 11:54that that's going to sit with me for a really exciting Rodney was riding high
- 11:58all evening. After we came off stage. He was wrapping some cables or
- 12:01whatever. We're in this Elvis costume that he's been that we had made for
- 12:07one of the music videos, and Beyond comes up and like taps him on
- 12:11the shoulders, like that was really good man, and Rodney thinking it was
- 12:13just you know, Screw or one of our mates or whatever, turns around
- 12:18like hey thanks mate, star struck and like, yeah, it was really
- 12:22really ride and high on that for the rest of the night and on on
- 12:26a personal level that a personal note, like it was just really wonderful having
- 12:33so many friends and you know, punters and family there as well. I
- 12:37had two of my younger sisters there, one of which only turned eighteen last
- 12:43year, so this was her first time seeing me perform live. And she
- 12:46also happens to be a huge night Flight fan. This was a band that
- 12:50we shared listen to music in the car over lockdown and stuff when we go
- 12:54for like you know, a drive within the five K radios with Chuck Knight
- 12:58fly on. So this was like real special on every conceivable level. That's
- 13:05as well done and now you're about to head out on the riff and tour
- 13:09with this good mate Thorpe. Samega that kicks off in Ballarat on Algus the
- 13:13twenty fifth, before going through Gold Coast, Brisbane, Amber, Sydney and
- 13:16Melbourne and Sydney and finishing in Melbourne on September nine. So it's a decent
- 13:22runner shows. Yeah, yeah, real decent. It's it's a weird one.
- 13:26We do like the one date in Ballarat this Friday and then have nearly
- 13:31a week off and then it's like four days back to back and then a
- 13:35week off and then Melbourne. So it's going to be good. Wrapping up
- 13:37in Melbourne I think feels feels right, Yeah, definitely. I'm very excited
- 13:41to like starting it in Victoria, Like starting in Ballarat and then ending in
- 13:46Melbourne just feels like a really good way to run this tour mm and it
- 13:50means we'll all have worked out any kinks by the time we get true True
- 13:54True. And what can your fans expect from your those shows, guys,
- 14:00Ethan, do you want to? I mean, look, we've got we're
- 14:03playing in the Gold Coast for the first time, so I feel like we're
- 14:07going to have a really high energy show going to happen there, just to
- 14:09make a really good first impression there. But in the way of this tour,
- 14:13we've got a stack of new songs that we've not played live to an
- 14:18audience before. So it'd be really nice to get a couple of these tracks
- 14:20out and let people experience the theatrical state that we're gonna be providing these songs.
- 14:28And I'm I think I'm quest fast is going to be a going to
- 14:33be an interesting one. I personally just had my costume show up this evening
- 14:39and Melbourne and oh my god, have you got a handy inflatable pig?
- 14:50Yeah? Boy? And that's going to be fun to play in excellent.
- 14:56So we've got something exciting to show people. Yeah, very exciting. And
- 15:01I would say, like I mean, like Ethan said, we're going to
- 15:05be playing a bunch of this material that we've never gotten to play live before.
- 15:09But that's not to say like it might be a bit shaky, Like
- 15:13these shows are going to be a celebration of the fact that we've got here
- 15:16and we're getting to play this music and share this music with people finally,
- 15:20Like it's just going to be wonderful. And I think I think people are
- 15:24going to feel that the moment they walk into the room. We're going to
- 15:28try and bring that the moment we hit the stage. We want people to
- 15:31feel that that sense of celebration and to feel appreciated and valued as punters.
- 15:39We will go out of our way to make sure that that's apparent. And
- 15:43where can people get tickets for these shows? We'll find out more information.
- 15:46I believe we've got tickets for all of these shows on the band camp on
- 15:50the Triple Kill dot bandcamp dot com. That's right, We've got all tickets
- 15:56currently discounted on our band camp, so you can't get them for a bit
- 16:00cheaper coming straight through us. And that'll have info for all our shows as
- 16:04well as the new album and some sick new merch. Hmm yeah, awesome.
- 16:10Well, before we let you go, I've started three new Spotify playlists.
- 16:12Who have you just based on songs from people I've interviewed, So using
- 16:17songs at your own, I want you to give me one song that's going
- 16:19to get the party started, one song that's going to save your marriage,
- 16:23one song that could potentially end your marriage, well from from our album or
- 16:27just from any any any of your albums. It has to be one of
- 16:30your songs. Okay, okay, So a song to get the party started?
- 16:34Ethan, you want to pick that one year they the party? Guy?
- 16:38Well, I've got those loud shirts, surely that so I have these.
- 16:45I have this one very specific loud rainbow shirt. Who's got this image
- 16:51of hey Man just printed on him. So if I was to pick one
- 16:53song to be like, what's the song to get the party started? It'd
- 16:56probably be Weight of a Turnier on our new album, which is just about
- 17:00Hem and the Musters in the US. Yeah, yeah, love that,
- 17:06I would say. So the song to save the marriage? Is that?
- 17:07The next one song to save the marriage? Some save the marriage? I
- 17:11would say Dust the single that we just released and the final track on the
- 17:15album. It's got an overall hopeful message, one of you know, trying
- 17:21to remain present and I think you know that can that can be something to
- 17:26remind us solves to do when things seem dire in a relationship or otherwise,
- 17:33Hey, that could help. I'm not saying it's going to save the marriage,
- 17:34but it'll hope the conversation, it'll be a story. You know,
- 17:41he begged me not to leave and started playing some man from Melbourne. Naturally
- 17:48I left. Well here's a chance to pick one that could potentially end of
- 17:52the marriage. Well uh oh oh, come on, let's let's let's go
- 17:57with where it started. As if you're playing a song that blades to someone
- 18:03in an attempt to save the marriage, it's I guarantee you it's not going
- 18:06to help. But babe, don't leave. We've gotta let it rip.
- 18:10Yeah, beautiful being such a good sports beow that your album Black and Drawn
- 18:18is out on August at twenty fifth this Friday, and i'd listener before the
- 18:22synerge. Guys. Really well done, quality piece of colitis fair music,
- 18:25says hopefully, I'll be thanks so much, Thanks so much, Chris's beautiful.
