- 2:35Sometimes Ilan has some great memeing going on and we'll get
- 2:39into that some other time. But today this is a clip from
- 2:42Elon Musk talking about The Starship and the construction of
- 2:48the Starship, I should say how it's going to be made of steel
- 2:52as opposed to something like carbon fiber.
- 2:55And the heat shields is going to be talking about how big it is,
- 3:00you know, the size of the thing. How absolutely gigantis it's
- 3:04going to be. So, let's sit back and listen to
- 3:08Elon. But first, I have to tell you

- 3:58steel is. So it would have gone through
- 4:04various iterations of heat shield.
- 4:06There's a lot of ways to skin the cat here.
- 4:10The ultimately we decided to have a heat shield hexagonal
- 4:14tiles, ceramic tiles that are basically like a tiny glass
- 4:21vermicelli out of microstructure level but there's a very light
- 4:27but very Crack resistant, essentially, glass tiles and
- 4:39their be cut because the Starship isn't isn't a steel
- 4:44construction. But yet, like, at first, it
- 4:46feels like old steel. Is that mean it's heavy?
- 4:48No, actually, it's the lightest construction.
- 4:51This is steel is the best thing is that, I think the best thing
- 4:55about Best design decision on this whole thing is 301
- 5:01stainless steel. Because at cryogenic
- 5:05temperatures of 301, stainless actually has about the same
- 5:09effective strength as an advanced composite or aluminum
- 5:12lithium, unlike most steals, which get brittle at low
- 5:16temperature 301 stainless gets much stronger and if it's in the
- 5:22in the in the extra hot condition, meaning it's cold
- 5:25role to extra heart condition. So it also gets way stronger, so
- 5:28they're gets its actually gets its its strength to weight ratio
- 5:33at cryogenic temperatures is equivalent or even perhaps
- 5:36slightly better, then then Advanced Composites or aluminum
- 5:41lithium. This is, this is not well
- 5:43appreciated because if you just look at the materials manual and
- 5:46say, like, what is the strength of stainless steel?
- 5:49It's it looks much weaker than it.
- 5:52Is you say, what is the strength at cryogenic temperature?
- 5:55Oh, much much stronger. You know, at very low
- 5:58temperature, almost twice as strong.
- 6:01That's when it becomes better than carbon fiber or aluminum
- 6:06lithium, and this is another benefit.
- 6:10It also has a high melting temperature.
- 6:12So for a reusable ship, you're coming in like a meteor.
- 6:16You want something that does not melt at a low temperature, you
- 6:18want something that melts at a high temperature and this is
- 6:21where steel is extremely good as well.
- 6:23So it's still has a melting temperature around sort of 1,500
- 6:31degrees Centigrade, whereas aluminum, you know, maybe 300 or
- 6:38400 degrees. And same thing for carbon fiber
- 6:41and that's really pushing it, you know?
- 6:43So this is having that much high melting temperature means that
- 6:48you don't need any shielding under the leeward side of their
- 6:52of the ship when it comes in for entry and and the shielding you
- 6:55need on the windward side. Side.
- 6:57The hot side is massively reduced because the the
- 7:01thickness of the tile is actually for a reusable system
- 7:06is dependent on what backshell temperature like how hot does
- 7:10the back of the tile that interfaces with the airframe
- 7:13guest and because the steel can take a much higher temperature,
- 7:18your heat shield even on the windward side is much.
- 7:21It is much lighter. But the net effect is that is
- 7:27301, stainless steel rocket is actually the lightest possible
- 7:31reusable architecture. Then then it comes down to cost.
- 7:37The carbon fiber, we were using was $130 a Time.
- 7:43The steel is 2500 dollars a ton. But it's are 22 to 25 sorry.
- 7:52The 130-thousand dollars a Time versus 2500 his time there was
- 7:56one percent so it was it's a hundred thirty thousand dollars
- 7:59a ton for the carbon fiber. And twenty-five hundred dollars
- 8:03a ton for the steel. The steel is about two percent
- 8:06of the cost of the carbon fiber. So this is good thing.
- 8:10We changed from carbon-fiber to steal by far and and very easy
- 8:21to weld stainless steel, the evidence being that we welded it
- 8:24Outdoors without a factory. So, Great skills by the team,
- 8:35but with with carbon fiber, this is impossible with aluminum,
- 8:40lithium it also impossible, but steel is very, is, is easy to
- 8:46weld and it is resilient to the elements.
- 8:48And also actually, as a touring Austin earlier, say like on
- 8:54Mars. Yeah.
- 8:55You can like cut that up. You can weld that you can modify
- 8:58it, no problem. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 9:02You're out there on the moon or Mars, you want something that
- 9:05you can modify that you can cut up and use for other things
- 9:08that's like, for sure, great things.
- 9:09So anyway, still obviously, I'm in love to steal.
- 9:13It was, you know, as time I had to say it, you know, so great.
- 9:18So let's see. Go on to the booster.
- 9:25So, the booster is designed to take up to 37 rafter engines.
- 9:30I'm not sure if we'll go that high, but you can really have
- 9:3531. I think like the minimum number
- 9:37you'd want is, you know, maybe around 24.
- 9:42But the booster is that is designed to be able to take
- 9:45multiple engines out. So you can actually add or
- 9:49subtract engines as you would like you to basically just need
- 9:52a lot of force pushing up. um, over time, I think that you
- 9:57probably went around to 7500 ton Force rocket which is about
- 10:04twice. The thrust of a Saturn 5 little
- 10:06more than twice to start thrust. And and on a roughly 5,000 ton,
- 10:14liftoff gross, liftoff Mass. So for a roughly one-and-a-half
- 10:19Thruster wait for a reusable rocket.
- 10:22You actually went to high thrust-to-weight rather than it
- 10:25with an Expendable rocket where you want to low thrust to weight
- 10:29because any thrust-to-weight below one is not useful like if
- 10:34you have a less thrust than your weight you don't move.
- 10:37So you actually want a high thrust-to-weight for a reusable
- 10:40rocket. This is a very important design.
- 10:45Optimization change. So that's why I think, you know,
- 10:49more inches, probably good and getting up to around 75 returns
- 10:53over time. And it won't have to wonder why
- 10:56don't have thrust-to-weight ratio or more.
- 11:00So, and what we think we're probably going to adjust the
- 11:03great been designed to be kind of like a sort of like a diamond
- 11:06shape looks cooler. Works better to and then the
- 11:13rear fins are actually just legs, so they're not They don't
- 11:17need needed for stabilization or guidance there.
- 11:20They're essentially their forelegs All right, so some
- 11:26let's go into some of the development testing.
- 11:31This is a raptor firing. All right, and then obviously,
- 12:35we had a raptor fire on the star Hopper.
- 12:39Yeah. It's kind of hard to cease to
- 12:46appreciate scale but it's the same diameter is Starship and
- 12:49obviously it's right over there. So it's kind of hard to tell if
- 12:53it's the size of a trash can or this is you know how big it is.
- 12:56But it's a that it's about the body diameter is about 39 meters
- 13:00or 30 feet not including the leg span
- 13:50This gives you a sense of size. So the little pixels there,
- 13:55that's a little, little pixels are human.
- 13:58And then this the hopper next to it, the Millennium Falcon for
- 14:02comparison, then Starship, which is what you see before you.
- 14:07And then that's what it's look will.
- 14:09Look like, with the full stack, which is almost two and a half
- 14:11times this tool. Is this vehicle?

- 14:22thing is going to be huge. It's going to be cost-effective
- 14:26and they'll be able to make a lot of them much quicker than
- 14:28they can, with carbon or any other material, to make these
- 14:33giant star ships. And it's going to be easy to
- 14:35easier to make, I should say because like he said in the
- 14:39show, you can just make this in a freaking parking lot.
- 14:44You didn't have to have a giant facility.
- 14:46It was just amazing. A parking lot by a shed. you
- 14:48know, like not a big deal, you just make this thing wherever
- 14:53you can and as much easier to build a spaceship wherever you
- 14:58can, then you know, in a highly secured facility someplace so
- 15:07you can just buy some land and build it in a parking lot.
