- 0:21Speaker 1: Our buddy, Jeff Passion is with us.
- 0:23Speaker 2: He is an MLB insider for ESPN. He also has
- 0:26Speaker 2: a podcast, new podcast, Relatively New Sources tell Jeff Passing,
- 0:30Speaker 2: it's a fantastic podcast.
- 0:31Speaker 1: How's it going, by the way, Jeff.
- 0:34Speaker 3: It's going well, I think, I mean, people seem to
- 0:38Speaker 3: be enjoying it so far.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I know I'm having fun with it.
- 0:41Speaker 3: But it's weird starting a new show, like just doing
- 0:46Speaker 3: something completely from scratch and you have absolutely no idea
- 0:51Speaker 3: how people are going to take to it, and then
- 0:54Speaker 3: just starting to like understand what the environment for new
- 0:59Speaker 3: shows is like these days. I'm not like an Instagram
- 1:02Speaker 3: reels person in life, and so seeing things get cut
- 1:07Speaker 3: down to like one minute makes me want to sit
- 1:10Speaker 3: there and scream.
- 1:12Speaker 4: We're making the attention span of our children really terrible
- 1:16Speaker 4: and I'm part of the problem now, And yet I
- 1:20Speaker 4: want people to watch it so so badly.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Right, So, really, like what this has taught me is
- 1:27Speaker 3: that my threshold for selling out is much lower than
- 1:30Speaker 3: I thought once about time.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I'm so proud of you, thank you so much.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Really, really, it's all just a ploy to getting the
- 1:40Speaker 3: good graces of stut Goats and to him, have him
- 1:44Speaker 3: regard me on his level of course.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah, well you're you're almost there. You're getting there.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That was a big step you lowering your standards. It's
- 1:57Speaker 2: part of the process. Trust the process. Jeff, you are
- 2:00Speaker 2: rush off a visit to the dentist. How did that
- 2:02Speaker 2: go today?
- 2:03Speaker 4: It was my child's visit to the dentist. No.
- 2:09Speaker 3: No, It's always harrowing when you take a child to
- 2:14Speaker 3: the dentist because I feel like it's like the most
- 2:18Speaker 3: acute possible reflection on your parenting. Does your child have
- 2:24Speaker 3: the ability to keep his mouth clean? Because think about this,
- 2:28Speaker 3: if you go in there, like the scariest moment is
- 2:32Speaker 3: when the hygienist comes out and says, okay, you can
- 2:36Speaker 3: come to the back, because you're walking in not knowing
- 2:39Speaker 3: if the dentist is going to be, you know, lording
- 2:42Speaker 3: over your child with just a pained look on her face,
- 2:47Speaker 3: like what has this kid? Why does your child have
- 2:51Speaker 3: such terrible teeth? What sort of parent are you? And
- 2:56Speaker 3: we got a good report this time. So if you
- 3:01Speaker 3: walk out of there.
- 3:02Speaker 4: With no cavities, I feel like it's a good day.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Yes, yes, at a lollipop.
- 3:09Speaker 3: No, he didn't get No, No, lollipops they give him
- 3:12Speaker 3: at this demist, they give him tokens and they have
- 3:16Speaker 3: and they have little machines in front with the terrible toys, right, yes,
- 3:21Speaker 3: And I looked. I looked at my son and I
- 3:24Speaker 3: was like, I was like, you're fourteen. Do you need
- 3:27Speaker 3: a token? The desk was like eighteen year olds asked
- 3:34Speaker 3: for tokens, and I'm like, what children are we raising
- 3:38Speaker 3: right now and watch one.
- 3:39Speaker 5: Minute videos and asked for tokens at the dentist when
- 3:43Speaker 5: they're eighteen.
- 3:46Speaker 6: I kind of want a token, not gonna lie, I
- 3:48Speaker 6: kind of want No, you want something when you walk
- 3:51Speaker 6: out of that hell, I mean you.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Do you want a reward for having hold on at
- 3:57Speaker 5: the dentist you do nothing, stewp This is like your ideal,
- 4:02Speaker 5: like outing.
- 4:03Speaker 4: You lay there and what happens is done for you.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Right, it feels it feels like, I don't know, it
- 4:10Speaker 3: feels like a win.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Frankly, so, I don't know about your experience, but when
- 4:15Speaker 6: I go to the dentist. One of the things that
- 4:17Speaker 6: my dentist does that just completely irks me, and I
- 4:20Speaker 6: imagine it's ten times worse for you is he talks
- 4:24Speaker 6: to me while he's doing whatever he's doing in my
- 4:27Speaker 6: mouth and then expects a response.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Why my mouth is why?
- 4:31Speaker 6: So I gotta imagine, like you said earlier, you were
- 4:34Speaker 6: going to the dentist, and I'm sitting there wondering, is
- 4:36Speaker 6: he getting like drilled and them going, so where do
- 4:39Speaker 6: you think?
- 4:40Speaker 1: Uh? Where do you think is gonna go? Jeff was
- 4:44Speaker 1: getting work done? Yes, expecting Jeff to respond.
- 4:48Speaker 3: I actually, it's it's funny like you bringing that up,
- 4:51Speaker 3: because I actually pride myself on my ability to converse
- 4:55Speaker 3: with the dentist while mid procedure.
- 4:58Speaker 4: I feel like it's it's just fill that you have.
- 5:01Speaker 4: We're just gonna test it out here, God parent.
- 5:05Speaker 5: Fool, I get traded the hands on how the Tigers do?
- 5:13Speaker 6: Understood all of that, right, Yes, that's more impressive than Elmo.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Yes, in fact, I might have you.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I might have you answer all baseball questions like you're
- 5:24Speaker 2: sitting in the dentist chair, so for anything, Oh my god,
- 5:32Speaker 2: I'm serious. We'll get to the baseball questions in the second.
- 5:36Speaker 2: But you are so right about the dentist. When you
- 5:38Speaker 2: bring your kid in, they're not judging the kid. They
- 5:41Speaker 2: are judging you. And now as the kid gets old,
- 5:44Speaker 2: gets older, they'll start judging the kid.
- 5:47Speaker 1: But in the meantime for you, for at least a
- 5:48Speaker 1: couple of.
- 5:49Speaker 2: More years, they might be giving the kid bad news,
- 5:53Speaker 2: but they're staring directly at Jeff Pazard.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I mean, oh my God, like laser eyes through the heart.
- 6:01Speaker 2: We were talking earlier before we get you back into
- 6:04Speaker 2: the dentist chair. We were talking earlier about sad group text.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Taylor has been roped in to a group text exchange.
- 6:13Speaker 1: That is only about the Florida Morlands.
- 6:16Speaker 2: So I am wondering, what's the saddest group text you
- 6:22Speaker 2: have found yourself at, Jeff Pezid.
- 6:26Speaker 4: I think it just depends on the mix of people.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Because you can have a group text with four people
- 6:34Speaker 3: that is great, but.
- 6:36Speaker 4: If the fifth is not vibing there.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You're just waiting for the moment when you get not
- 6:43Speaker 3: a text, but in like tiny texts, the little notification
- 6:47Speaker 3: that says this person has left the conversation, and you
- 6:53Speaker 3: almost wonder, can I force this person to leave the
- 6:57Speaker 3: conversation if the vibe is not right? And here's the thing,
- 7:01Speaker 3: like group chats are, I mean, they're a formative part.
- 7:07Speaker 3: I think of any child growing up theseus, it's like, yeah,
- 7:11Speaker 3: it's it's the modern sitting around a bar and watching
- 7:18Speaker 3: a game together, Like, that's what the group chat is.
- 7:20Speaker 3: So you need to curate your group chats very carefully,
- 7:24Speaker 3: and you need to make sure that you don't make
- 7:27Speaker 3: the mistake of allowing a leave the conversation person into it,
- 7:32Speaker 3: because quite often leave the conversation people don't have enough
- 7:36Speaker 3: feel to actually leave the conversation. They don't realize that
- 7:40Speaker 3: they're the problem. They can't diagnose it, they're just happy
- 7:44Speaker 3: to be there. And so it's it's as much about
- 7:47Speaker 3: the pre work as anything. You can't let yourself get
- 7:51Speaker 3: into a group chat that you don't want to be
- 7:54Speaker 3: involved with, because then you're just the guy who's too
- 7:57Speaker 3: good for the group chat, and that reflects poorly on you.
- 8:00Speaker 2: What a fantastic breakdown, Go ahead to hell.
- 8:02Speaker 7: Yeh, this is the exact dilemma I'm in right now
- 8:04Speaker 7: because I don't want to leave this group chat. But
- 8:06Speaker 7: I was promised when I joined this group chat that
- 8:08Speaker 7: they talked about baseball. But it's only Marlins fan, So
- 8:12Speaker 7: that's why the conversation only becomes about the Marlins. I'm
- 8:15Speaker 7: a Yankee fan, but I don't want to leave this
- 8:17Speaker 7: group chat because then they're going to be talking about
- 8:19Speaker 7: me leaving this group chat. So then people look at
- 8:22Speaker 7: my phone and they're like, oh my god, Taylor, you
- 8:24Speaker 7: have five hundred unread messages, and I go watch this
- 8:27Speaker 7: and I just clicked this baseball group chat and it
- 8:29Speaker 7: goes down to fifteen.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Hold on, hold on.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Here's the false premise in this situation is I don't
- 8:40Speaker 3: want to leave this group chat. But you haven't responded
- 8:43Speaker 3: to four hundred and eighty five messages. You have essentially
- 8:48Speaker 3: already left the group chat without leaving it at this point.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Yeah, you have put it.
- 8:52Speaker 3: You have put it on permanent silence right now, and
- 8:55Speaker 3: your lack of response it says as much to them
- 8:59Speaker 3: about your investment in the group chat is anything.
- 9:02Speaker 4: I think the clear move.
- 9:04Speaker 3: In this situation is you keep that single chat on
- 9:08Speaker 3: do not disturb, and every so often you just come
- 9:12Speaker 3: in with a banger. You have to be the guy
- 9:15Speaker 3: who makes every text that he sends worth it. But
- 9:19Speaker 3: also you get known for being the person who just
- 9:23Speaker 3: sits through all of the garbage that flows through there,
- 9:27Speaker 3: but knows the right time to come in, and you
- 9:30Speaker 3: can establish yourself as the once in every blue moon
- 9:33Speaker 3: texture on that specific group chat without having the discomfort
- 9:37Speaker 3: of leaving it.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Right, But he always has to hit home runs when
- 9:40Speaker 2: he comes in, right, That's it.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Oh, no question about it. And here's the thing.
- 9:44Speaker 3: If you don't, you do put the possibility out there
- 9:50Speaker 3: of them booting you from it.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Now, it just depends on how you want to play
- 9:54Speaker 4: this thing.
- 9:55Speaker 3: You could be the hero by coming in with bangers,
- 9:58Speaker 3: or you could be the pariah who gainst run from it.
- 10:01Speaker 3: But it's hilarious to get run from an all Marlins
- 10:04Speaker 3: group chat.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Like that might be worth it just for the story.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I am told here not to put you back into
- 10:12Speaker 2: the dentist chair because.
- 10:13Speaker 1: It's terrible audio, especially when I'm asking you about the
- 10:18Speaker 1: stuff that people want to hear about.
- 10:28Speaker 8: It is a little liftle hairy.
- 10:33Speaker 4: I get I CI a crap and you get it.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I want to continue with it, but again, Adam, and
- 10:42Speaker 1: that stop.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Alright, fair enough, But it's a job to protect me
- 10:46Speaker 2: from bad audio.
- 10:49Speaker 7: Jeff, I'm gonna get my Yankee question out of the
- 10:50Speaker 7: way early because people people get pretty sick when I
- 10:53Speaker 7: talk about New York sports. My problem as a Yankee
- 10:57Speaker 7: fan is that it.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Feels like New York views.
- 10:59Speaker 7: Every trade deadline from the perspective of Max Freedith coming back.
- 11:03Speaker 7: That's our big acquisition. Then we'll get whoever this year's
- 11:06Speaker 7: Jake Bird is to cover up our bullpen issues. Can
- 11:10Speaker 7: you give me a name that I could at least
- 11:12Speaker 7: get excited about for this MLB trade deadline?
- 11:16Speaker 4: Mason Miller?
- 11:17Speaker 1: Wow? Wow?
- 11:19Speaker 4: Excited?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Did he give you?
- 11:21Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking that's him and that's you and
- 11:23Speaker 2: the group text coming with a home run, get in,
- 11:25Speaker 2: get out?
- 11:25Speaker 3: I mean, I mean, so, here's the situation with the
- 11:29Speaker 3: Padres and Mason Miller. Do they want to trade him? No,
- 11:32Speaker 3: of course not. They gave up later Debrees is the
- 11:34Speaker 3: number two prospect in all of baseball last year to
- 11:38Speaker 3: get him around this time, and wanted to build a SuperPen,
- 11:41Speaker 3: and they've done so. Like the reason that the Padres
- 11:44Speaker 3: are still around five hundred is not entirely due to
- 11:48Speaker 3: its bullpen, but in large parts so. At the same time, though,
- 11:51Speaker 3: Mason Miller is the best closer in baseball right now,
- 11:54Speaker 3: He's got multiple years of control left, and the Padres
- 11:57Speaker 3: desperately need major league ready starting pitching, and that happens
- 12:02Speaker 3: to be an area of some depth for the Yankees,
- 12:05Speaker 3: so they match up nicely with the Padres and they
- 12:09Speaker 3: could conceivably go out. It would cost a lot, I mean,
- 12:13Speaker 3: it would cost a lot a lot for a one
- 12:16Speaker 3: inning reliever essentially, But think about how comfortable you are
- 12:21Speaker 3: going into ninth innings with Mason Miller. He's the most
- 12:23Speaker 3: unhittable pitcher in baseball right now. So it's a sort
- 12:27Speaker 3: of deal that I think, if it presents itself, it
- 12:31Speaker 3: makes a ton of sense for the Yankees, but it
- 12:33Speaker 3: also makes sense for other teams. And when you have
- 12:36Speaker 3: the limited inventory that you do as of right now
- 12:40Speaker 3: at this trade deadline, that makes valuable guys like Miller
- 12:44Speaker 3: even more valuable than they would be under normal circumstances.
- 12:47Speaker 3: And there is no time to trade a reliever quite
- 12:52Speaker 3: like the deadline, that is, when their value is at
- 12:54Speaker 3: their highest.
- 12:55Speaker 2: If not the Yankees, where do you think Miller goes?
- 12:57Speaker 2: If he goes, is it the you know, the obvious play?
- 13:00Speaker 2: This is the Dodgers, the Braves.
- 13:02Speaker 4: What do you know not Dodgers.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Padres Aren't going to give the best closer in the
- 13:06Speaker 3: world to the Dodgers.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Yep, Like that's not going to happen.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Braves, I could see the Braves, I guess, but man
- 13:14Speaker 3: with Ryse Elliglesias. And I know Robert Suarez has been hurt,
- 13:18Speaker 3: but he's been awesome this year. And Dylan Lee and
- 13:21Speaker 3: Tod fin like they have a really really deep bullpen,
- 13:26Speaker 3: like a good bullpen so far.
- 13:29Speaker 4: And you could say, I suppose the same for Seattle.
- 13:31Speaker 3: But Seattle also has that big league starting pitching right now.
- 13:35Speaker 3: And you know they have Kate Anderson waiting down in
- 13:39Speaker 3: the minor leagues ready to come up. They have Ryan
- 13:41Speaker 3: Sloan waiting ready to come up. So if they theoretically
- 13:44Speaker 3: were to move a guy like George Kirby in this deal,
- 13:48Speaker 3: it would be it would be tough, but it would
- 13:51Speaker 3: be doable. Pittsburgh has pitching depth as well, and more
- 13:56Speaker 3: than either the Yankees or the Mariners. I think Pittsburgh
- 13:59Speaker 3: has a need for that back end bullpen piece. And
- 14:02Speaker 3: it would also be nice because Mason Miller's from the
- 14:04Speaker 3: Pittsburgh area, So you know, there are a lot of
- 14:09Speaker 3: a lot of teams out there that would want him,
- 14:11Speaker 3: But the number of teams that could satisfy the Padres
- 14:14Speaker 3: need for big league reddy starting pitching that's where the
- 14:17Speaker 3: list whittlestat a little bit.
- 14:19Speaker 7: The only name that I think would excite me more
- 14:21Speaker 7: than somebody like Mason Miller would be somebody like Paynya
- 14:24Speaker 7: Jeremy Pania from the Houston Astros. But the Ashers are
- 14:27Speaker 7: kind of in that middle ground of like are they
- 14:30Speaker 7: buyers are they sellers? With that third wild card spot? Jeff,
- 14:34Speaker 7: do you think baseball is better off with more teams
- 14:36Speaker 7: believing they're in it or with more sellers allowing these
- 14:40Speaker 7: contenders to kind of load up for a postseason.
- 14:43Speaker 4: It's funny.
- 14:44Speaker 3: I remember when the discussions were being had for the
- 14:49Speaker 3: sixth playoff team in each league, expanding to twelve total
- 14:52Speaker 3: playoff teams. Right My question to people at Major League
- 14:57Speaker 3: Baseball was, is this going to kill the trade line
- 15:00Speaker 3: because everyone is still going to think there And the
- 15:03Speaker 3: answer it turned out was no. I mean, last year,
- 15:07Speaker 3: you know, there were I think thirty six trades on
- 15:10Speaker 3: the final day alone, So I don't think it inherently
- 15:16Speaker 3: necessarily does that.
- 15:17Speaker 4: I just think this happens to be.
- 15:19Speaker 3: A year where there are so many teams in contention
- 15:22Speaker 3: right now that the only obvious, like, you know, we're
- 15:28Speaker 3: open for business sellers at this point are the Giants, Mets,
- 15:32Speaker 3: and the Rockies and the Angels are certainly going to
- 15:35Speaker 3: get there, which it just is a question of do
- 15:39Speaker 3: they move guys like Zach Netto and Read Detmer's and
- 15:42Speaker 3: Jose Soriano or is it more of the shorter term,
- 15:45Speaker 3: softer sell for them. Kansas City is going to get there,
- 15:47Speaker 3: and you know Lamee Thomas will move, but do they
- 15:50Speaker 3: move Michael Waka?
- 15:51Speaker 4: Do they consider Seth Lugo.
- 15:54Speaker 3: There are teams that are going to join, but it's
- 15:56Speaker 3: not a whole lot, and so with this lack of inventory,
- 16:00Speaker 3: it's going to have a demonstrable effect on the deadline.
- 16:03Speaker 3: I think prices are going to be high, and I
- 16:04Speaker 3: think there's going to be real opportunity for teams, whether
- 16:08Speaker 3: it's ones like the Astros that are kind of on
- 16:10Speaker 3: the cusp and going in.
- 16:11Speaker 4: The wrong direction, or even teams that are in.
- 16:14Speaker 3: It right now but have big league depth that they
- 16:17Speaker 3: can go and flip for something else, like you know,
- 16:20Speaker 3: the Rays could could.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Go out there and do something like that.
- 16:26Speaker 3: The Yankees with their starting pitching depth that goes down
- 16:30Speaker 3: to Elma Rodriguez, who's you know, been up and down
- 16:33Speaker 3: but anticipating guys are going to come back. I don't
- 16:37Speaker 3: think that in and of itself, Taylor is a bad thing,
- 16:42Speaker 3: but it can't be the only thing teams do saying.
- 16:46Speaker 4: We're getting these guys back and that's going to be
- 16:48Speaker 4: our addition.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Right Yep.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Maybe it hasn't impacted it, Jeff, but it certainly made
- 16:52Speaker 2: it more tricky. Like if you're the Pirate, you're fifty
- 16:54Speaker 2: two and forty nine, you're three games above your wild
- 16:56Speaker 2: core team. Right now, you have a shot of making
- 16:58Speaker 2: the playoffs, and once you make it, anything can happen.
- 17:01Speaker 2: What you mentioned Mason Miller. Maybe to the Pirates, but
- 17:04Speaker 2: what do they do with Paul schemes like that? They
- 17:06Speaker 2: have to be confused. It makes it more difficult deciding
- 17:08Speaker 2: what you should do, be a buyer or a seller
- 17:10Speaker 2: come the trade deadline.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that that's that's a feature, not
- 17:15Speaker 3: a bug.
- 17:16Speaker 4: I like that.
- 17:17Speaker 3: I like that pressure is put on these teams. And
- 17:21Speaker 3: I appreciate the last collective bargaining agreement. I didn't think
- 17:25Speaker 3: it would have this strong an effect, but I think
- 17:28Speaker 3: the anti tanking rules that were put into place, and
- 17:32Speaker 3: they were really quite simple, like depending on your market size.
- 17:37Speaker 3: If you're bad for multiple years in a row, your
- 17:40Speaker 3: draft pick is going to drop by ten spots. And
- 17:43Speaker 3: so you know, the White Sox, like coming off their
- 17:47Speaker 3: all time worst season, like one hundred and twenty one losses,
- 17:52Speaker 3: the White Sox picked tenth in the draft because they're
- 17:54Speaker 3: in a large market because they had lost for a
- 17:57Speaker 3: couple of years in a row, been in the lottery,
- 17:59Speaker 3: and you like, he can't do that, And so I
- 18:03Speaker 3: think incentivizing teams like the Pirates to be in while
- 18:06Speaker 3: they're not as in as they should be, now's the
- 18:10Speaker 3: chance for them to win fall schemes is in his prime.
- 18:14Speaker 3: They have one of the best offenses in baseball, yep.
- 18:17Speaker 3: And that's with Connor Griffin and O'Neil Cruz on the
- 18:20Speaker 3: injured list right now. So they're gonna get even better.
- 18:22Speaker 3: The Pirates have a chance to be it dangerous teems
- 18:25Speaker 3: to and I think if they're not pushing, I'm not
- 18:28Speaker 3: gonna stay all in. But if they're not pushing in
- 18:31Speaker 3: strong at this deadline, they're doing themselves a grand service.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Stuck Goatson Company is brought to you by Fan Duel.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Baseball fans think you know who's hitting a homer today. Well,

- 20:26Speaker 6: with all that being said, all these teams that are
- 20:29Speaker 6: gonna want to get better and go for it, and
- 20:31Speaker 6: all these big name school bol Mason Miller. At the
- 20:35Speaker 6: end of the deadline, is it going to be all
- 20:37Speaker 6: these guys are moving or do you think it's going
- 20:39Speaker 6: to be kind of a letdown when it all happens.
- 20:42Speaker 3: I think we have a wide range of potential outcomes here,
- 20:47Speaker 3: and I'm not trying to cop out. The reality is
- 20:51Speaker 3: all of this just depends on what the standings look like.
- 20:54Speaker 4: And so I think this is going to be.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Determined over the next you know, seven eight or so
- 21:00Speaker 3: days going up to around July thirtieth, and at that point, teams,
- 21:05Speaker 3: you know, they're gonna have to figure out, Okay, what
- 21:08Speaker 3: are we actually doing because you can't wake up the
- 21:11Speaker 3: morning of August there and say, you know what, we're.
- 21:14Speaker 4: Gonna move guys now.
- 21:15Speaker 3: There are too many medical records that need to get exchange.
- 21:19Speaker 3: Just planting out the process. Yeah, the process just is
- 21:23Speaker 3: you need to walk into that day knowing your birds
- 21:26Speaker 3: in hand, and that's how you can then go out
- 21:30Speaker 3: and execute.
- 21:31Speaker 7: Jeff, you mentioned that the Mets are one of the
- 21:33Speaker 7: obvious sellers. The Freddy Parolta trade has been a complete
- 21:38Speaker 7: disaster so far for the Mets. He's five and nine
- 21:40Speaker 7: with over a five era. Is that one of the
- 21:44Speaker 7: names you think the Mets are most likely to move off?
- 21:47Speaker 1: Oh?
- 21:47Speaker 4: Yeah, Freddy parolt is gone. Like that's a that's a
- 21:51Speaker 4: guarantee at this point. Freddy parolt is gone. I think
- 21:54Speaker 4: Brooks Raley is gone. I think aj Minter has gone.
- 21:57Speaker 3: These are all guys who are gonna be free agents
- 22:00Speaker 3: after the season. There's no point in the Mets holding
- 22:04Speaker 3: on to them. I think they and everybody knows that. Like,
- 22:07Speaker 3: they're just going to try and get as much as
- 22:10Speaker 3: they can and I think Mintor and Rayley are both
- 22:13Speaker 3: quite valuable. There's a possibility that a reliever would get
- 22:19Speaker 3: more than Freddie Brawlt. At this point, that's just you know,
- 22:23Speaker 3: it's a trade that did not work out. The real
- 22:26Speaker 3: question with the Mets to me is does Luke Weaver
- 22:29Speaker 3: move If so, He's one of the most desirable relievers
- 22:34Speaker 3: out there. And when you look at a relief pitching
- 22:36Speaker 3: landscape that at one point everyone thought was going to
- 22:39Speaker 3: include a role as Chapman and does not. Because the
- 22:42Speaker 3: Red Sox have won fourteen straight games, you know, that's
- 22:46Speaker 3: where teams can step in and say, hey, let's be
- 22:50Speaker 3: opportunistic here. And the Mets want to win next year,
- 22:53Speaker 3: and Luke Weaver would go a long way to helping
- 22:56Speaker 3: them win next year.
- 22:58Speaker 4: But the value that they can get firm right now
- 23:00Speaker 4: might just.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Be worth it to say, hey, we'll go find another reliever.
- 23:05Speaker 3: We're not just building for twenty twenty seven, which we
- 23:09Speaker 3: don't even know how long the season's.
- 23:11Speaker 9: Going to be.
- 23:11Speaker 3: We're building for twenty eight and twenty nine and thirty
- 23:13Speaker 3: and beyond.
- 23:15Speaker 2: We have a ridiculous Tony Gwintey from Taylor that will
- 23:18Speaker 2: get to in just a second. But you brought up
- 23:19Speaker 2: the Red Sox here. They have one fourteen straight. What
- 23:22Speaker 2: are they doing differently? Why is it clicking now for
- 23:24Speaker 2: Boston as opposed to earlier this season?
- 23:28Speaker 3: You know, there were points at which the Red Sox
- 23:31Speaker 3: were pitching. They've pitched pretty well all season long, but
- 23:35Speaker 3: pitching well and not hitting. They hit a little bit
- 23:38Speaker 3: for some point there, and they weren't pitching well.
- 23:41Speaker 4: They do both and they stop catching the ball.
- 23:43Speaker 3: It's just a matter of all three phases finally coming together,
- 23:47Speaker 3: and especially on the offensive side. They haven't turned into
- 23:50Speaker 3: juggernauts by any meanings, but the offense has been enough
- 23:54Speaker 3: and the pitching has been excellent, and they have done
- 24:00Speaker 3: quite the rescue job on this season because it was
- 24:03Speaker 3: barreling toward a dark place, and now.
- 24:06Speaker 4: They look like a healthy, good baseball team.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Yep, who's not gonna sell come to trade deadline? I
- 24:12Speaker 2: mean no, who can't, right, not in that market? All right, Taylor,
- 24:16Speaker 2: give him your ridiculous Tony Gwynn take that might send
- 24:19Speaker 2: him back to the dentist.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I mean, go ahead.
- 24:22Speaker 7: So we were doing a we got a list online,
- 24:25Speaker 7: one hundred greatest and Tony Gwynn was eighty seventh in
- 24:28Speaker 7: the one hundred Greatest Baseball list and our boardop Ricardo
- 24:32Speaker 7: was outrage saying it was way too low for Tony Gwynn.
- 24:35Speaker 7: And then I just looked at Ricardo. I said, he's
- 24:38Speaker 7: kind of a Tony Luisa Rias is a poor man's
- 24:41Speaker 7: Tony Gwynn. I don't think Tony Gwynn is a franchise
- 24:44Speaker 7: pillar in today's baseball. If Tony Gwynn was coming up
- 24:47Speaker 7: through the MLB right now, he'd probably be on his
- 24:50Speaker 7: third MLB team. He's not mister Padre. He's mister Padre,
- 24:54Speaker 7: mister Royal, mister pirate.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Jeff, Yeah, I think you're wrong.
- 25:06Speaker 1: I know he is.
- 25:08Speaker 3: No, I think well, but but I actually am not
- 25:14Speaker 3: entirely sure that that would be the case. Here's the
- 25:17Speaker 3: here's the thing. Tony gwyn kind of was a rich
- 25:23Speaker 3: man's Louise. Yes, he did more. He he stole bases
- 25:27Speaker 3: when he was younger, and he was an incredible athlete,
- 25:31Speaker 3: but he was.
- 25:32Speaker 2: Greg Maddicks told me he's the only guy he feared
- 25:34Speaker 2: in the batter's box because he was smarter than Maddics.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Of course, and and all of these things can be true.
- 25:41Speaker 3: At the same time, like you can you can have
- 25:44Speaker 3: somebody who instills fear. I was having a discussion with
- 25:48Speaker 3: an executive yesterday about Louise Rise actually, and he was
- 25:53Speaker 3: giving me all the reasons that he does not like him,
- 25:57Speaker 3: and and here's the thing. All all of them were
- 26:00Speaker 3: actually reasonable and factual. But and I countered this to him,
- 26:07Speaker 3: if you walk into your clubhouse and tell the players
- 26:11Speaker 3: who are going to hit behind him that you just
- 26:13Speaker 3: traded for Luis Arise, what would your What would their
- 26:17Speaker 3: reaction be? And he was like all of them would say, hell, yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 3: thank you for doing that. So as much as as
- 26:27Speaker 3: a society we want to try and say about batting average,
- 26:31Speaker 3: you know, it's it's certainly not the most important statistic
- 26:35Speaker 3: by anything, we also still can't ignore it.
- 26:39Speaker 4: It's a valuable thing. And the difference I think was
- 26:43Speaker 4: Tony Gwynn was regularly hitting like.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Over three forty into the three fifties, you know, three
- 26:48Speaker 3: seventy one year, three nineties, in the ninety four, so like.
- 26:54Speaker 8: Career, I mean, yeah, I mean I think that bec
- 27:00Speaker 8: because of the combination of just how high the batting
- 27:04Speaker 8: average is and the personality and the athleticism he probably
- 27:09Speaker 8: doesn't get traded.
- 27:11Speaker 3: But I think Taylor's point is an interesting reflection on
- 27:16Speaker 3: how modern baseball front offices are run, and that even
- 27:21Speaker 3: though he's making that point that I don't know that
- 27:24Speaker 3: that necessarily means that he agrees with it.
- 27:27Speaker 4: It's just how baseball teams run themselves these days.
- 27:31Speaker 6: It seems to me, based on what you were saying,
- 27:34Speaker 6: is we're not overestimating Tony Gwinn, it's we're underestimating Luisa
- 27:40Speaker 6: Riots because the way Taylor's saying it, it's almost like
- 27:42Speaker 6: an insult. But you're saying, Luis a Riaz, it's definitely
- 27:46Speaker 6: a guy that matters on team sup.
- 27:49Speaker 1: Tony Gwinn, Yeah.
- 27:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think he Let's put it this way,
- 27:54Speaker 3: I think he is better than what he gets paid
- 27:57Speaker 3: and the amount of interest that's been given to him
- 28:00Speaker 3: him both on the trademarket and in free agency.
- 28:03Speaker 2: He's saying, the comparison is not that ridiculous, That's all
- 28:05Speaker 2: he's saying.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Taylor gave that take.
- 28:08Speaker 2: He was moments removed from saying that if he put
- 28:11Speaker 2: blanket defense on Bob Coosey, he could stop him.
- 28:13Speaker 4: I mean, Taylor, how old are you?
- 28:18Speaker 3: A thirty two, you're too old to be saying dumb
- 28:22Speaker 3: things like that. That's a that's like a an in
- 28:25Speaker 3: your twenties. Take when you're like full of youthful hubrists
- 28:30Speaker 3: and the world hasn't beaten you down.
- 28:33Speaker 4: Bob Coozy would cook your ass.
- 28:36Speaker 9: Like, just because he was white and the photos of
- 28:41Speaker 9: him are black and white doesn't mean that he couldn't
- 28:45Speaker 9: dribble circles around you, bounce the ball.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Off your head and then do like a set shot
- 28:52Speaker 3: in your face and turn around and walk away steph
- 28:55Speaker 3: style before the thing banks off the backboard and emasculates you.
- 29:00Speaker 7: So, Jeff, I also walked onto the team at North
- 29:03Speaker 7: Carolina for college football, and I said, if I played
- 29:05Speaker 7: college football in the thirties, the Heisman Trophy would be
- 29:08Speaker 7: named after me.
- 29:10Speaker 4: Yeah, that's also one hundred percent not true.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Why do we, like, why do we almost infantilize athletes
- 29:18Speaker 3: of past eras like the whole Babe Ruth couldn't do
- 29:22Speaker 3: anything in modern baseball.
- 29:25Speaker 4: Babe Ruth would crush these days because you would.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Get him on a training program and the reality is
- 29:32Speaker 3: he's a better athlete than ninety nine percent of the
- 29:35Speaker 3: people there might not have looked at. Here's the thing, Taylor,
- 29:38Speaker 3: are you a better athlete than the best athletes of
- 29:41Speaker 3: the nineteen fifties.
- 29:44Speaker 7: If you put me in the fifties. Now, that's a
- 29:47Speaker 7: different argument.
- 29:48Speaker 2: I'm saying it's President Taylor putting him in Ranem for friends.
- 29:51Speaker 7: Yes, I'm teleporting back.
- 29:53Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I still don't think that's true.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Man, like we're like, we're talking like a scholarship player.
- 30:03Speaker 4: That's a different story.
- 30:10Speaker 1: He has himself beating out Johnny Uniteds. I think so great.
- 30:19Speaker 1: We appreciate the time. We know it's a busy time. Man.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Check out the podcast sources.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Tell Jeff Pass and get him wherever you get your podcasts.
- 30:28Speaker 2: A new episode is Outbring did something on AI?
- 30:31Speaker 1: Right? Is that correct? Your last episode?
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 30:33Speaker 1: It was?
- 30:34Speaker 9: It was.
- 30:34Speaker 3: It was very funny actually because I sent something out
- 30:37Speaker 3: there on social media talking about how this is a
- 30:40Speaker 3: show about AI and immediately everyone's like, you're better than that.
- 30:45Speaker 4: And I'm like and I'm like, guys, please watch the show.
- 30:50Speaker 3: It's an hour long criticism of how bad AI actually is,
- 30:56Speaker 3: all the metal old evils it's putting on society, and
- 31:01Speaker 3: how it's making a dummer.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Don't judge a podcast by its title, I always say,
- 31:06Speaker 2: you know, Jeff, we appreciate it, buddy.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 31:12Speaker 4: He
