Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_03: Uh coming up in a few minutes, uh, I've got a story actually that uh it comes from Georgia, but easily could have come from somewhere in Stewend County too.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: Easily could have come from I mean we're all kind of uh the same, right?
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: Just that sometimes there's variations of how we it's geography.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: That's all the differences here.
- 0:17SPEAKER_03: That's really it.
- 0:18SPEAKER_02: I just sent Scott an ad that he hasn't watched yet, but most of you probably have.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: It's the Sydney Sweeney ad for it's one of those betting sites called Novig.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: And it's oh, I I want you to know this.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: She has stake in it.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: She has some investing stake in it.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm not surprised.
- 0:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's why Tom Brady does well, he just recently did water.
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: He uh is in the new ninja.
- 0:40SPEAKER_03: Tom Brady has steak in water.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: He's in the new ninja filtration system commercial.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: But here's so Sydney Sweeney's in this commercial.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: Let me look at this.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Okay, take a look.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: And it's where there are certain things like footballs, hockey sticks that are placed over her naked body.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, just in the right spots.
- 0:58SPEAKER_03: Oh, wow.
- 0:59SPEAKER_03: Nice footballs.
- 1:01SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:02SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, that net.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: I I knew.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: I knew.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Oh wow.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: That photographer must have had quite the story to tell.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Well, and there's some pushback from this because there are a lot of female athletes who are who are saying this is a big misrepresentation of who we are.
- 1:25SPEAKER_03: Oh, I see the Canadian figure skater uh complaining about this right here in this little segment that you uh sent me here.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, who's the Canadian figure skater?
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, I thought I just sent you the ad.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: Didn't I just?
- 1:35SPEAKER_03: No, but it's got a little bit more of the story behind it.
- 1:37SPEAKER_03: So I'm seeing, but back to the ad.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Now I'm here.
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Ah, yes, she's spinning a ball like a Harlem Globetrotter.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: And now she's in a jersey with no pants on.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Um But you're right, there are different athletes.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: You know, there might be a gymnast.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Actually, one of the gymnasts, her name is Felicity Palmatier.
- 1:55SPEAKER_02: She was she has some pushback on it.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Actually, let me give you.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Do you mind if I give you a little bit of audio?
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Really, do you think I know this answer?
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: This is uh a CNN reporter who is talking about this.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: Sweeney wears little to no clothing while posing with sports gear.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: It's racked up 35 million views on Instagram in just four days.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: 36 now.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: Now, athletes are hitting back online by posting their own takes on what it looks like to be a woman in sports.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: Australian surfer Felicity Palmetier is one of them.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Just absolute utter disbelief.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Uh incredibly disappointing, like how far you can put women's sports backwards in the space of a 40-second commercial to add that.
- 2:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Okay, by the way, that no, she's not on dancing with the stars.
- 2:46SPEAKER_03: I saw there's some Olympians that are going to be on this year.
- 2:49SPEAKER_03: That's why I was like, oh, so here's the thing.
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: I think the the girls in this case, I understand the argument you want to make, but I don't think that's the point of what this commercial was.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: I did not listen to the audio.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: I want to be very clear.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: Did and he's like, and I didn't need to.
- 3:05SPEAKER_03: I didn't know she was even speaking.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: No, all right.
- 3:09SPEAKER_02: So without- And then you're like, I need to go place a bat.
- 3:12SPEAKER_02: Wait, well, that's just it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: You just you are hitting it right there.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: If this is a betting service towards women's sports.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: I I think it's all sports.
- 3:20SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:21SPEAKER_03: Then they're not targeting.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: That's not, they're not trying to put an image on uh women's sports or do anything.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: They are going for horny, college-aged, and just over that boys.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: The same ones who are doing fan duel.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: And that's that's the point.
- 3:37SPEAKER_03: That's the marketing of this.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: This is not marketing to promote women's sports.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: They're literally going, horny guys, we know you place bets, and we know you're usually, usually the demographic starts younger.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: Yes, I know there are betters that are well into their 70s, but And there's also women better, too.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: I don't want to say that they're not.
- 3:56SPEAKER_03: But you know what?
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: They could do the same exact commercial with any guy that's in, you know, a good physical condition, and he could put a football in front of his, you know what.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Do you think they would?
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: Uh yes, actually I do.
- 4:08SPEAKER_03: I think there could be a counter, uh, a counter commercial to this one.
- 4:12SPEAKER_03: That was that's not an uncommon practice.
- 4:14SPEAKER_03: No, but the marketing for this is not about women's sports.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: A counter comment to that, and I'm glad you you kind of lead you're leading us into this.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: Is there have been different athletes prior to this, and one of them is uh one of them is a man who is it?
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: I don't think it was Tom Brady, but he posed naked on, I believe it was some sort of ESPN magazine or something like that.
- 4:36SPEAKER_03: It's not terribly uncommon.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: One of the Williams sisters also posed naked prior to this.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: There was was it a rowing team that posed naked?
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: Anyway, so Sweeney was like, wait a second, I'm not the first one to be naked and promoting sports.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: That's not even the argument.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: The argument That's what she well, okay.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: She I don't think she's actually come out with an official statement.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Let me pull this up.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, go ahead.
- 4:59SPEAKER_03: But but the argument here is is you gotta know the marketing of this.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: What are they going for?
- 5:03SPEAKER_03: Sex sales.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: That yes, and sex sells to young horny guys that have money to spend on betting.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Okay, so it says Sweeney has not officially responded, but she did put on her Instagram stories of past covers of ESP on the magazines now discontinued body issue featuring the stripped down athletes.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: If this was a commercial that was promoting women's sports, or if it was a betting platform very much designed to be towards women's sports, because think about this for a second.
- 5:33SPEAKER_03: Your your fan duel sites and stuff like that, or whatever the betting site, most of those started because they knew they were gonna make a fortune on things like the NFL, uh, and and a lot of the male-driven sports teams.
- 5:47SPEAKER_03: Now, of course the women's sports teams have had a look at the WNBA having a great moment, right?
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: Great moment.
- 5:53SPEAKER_03: And deservedly so, right?
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: Great athletes.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: But right now, male sports are the driving force.
- 5:58SPEAKER_03: That was the beginning of the betting.
- 6:01SPEAKER_03: So if this was a if this was a betting site aimed towards women's sports exclusively, but you could kind of bet on the NFL, but let's say that's more the fanDuel universe.
- 6:13SPEAKER_03: I know fan duel's everywhere now, don't get me wrong.
- 6:16SPEAKER_03: Then I could see the argument being you're demeaning us uh then this commercial would be the wrong tone for that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_03: Here's where I think that it's just marketing a 22-year-old guy that has an extra hundred bucks right now.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Here's where I think that it they could have tweaked it a little bit.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Now, if she would have been playing a sport, it would have fallen on deaf ears.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: But if she would have been sitting on a couch, because what do you do when you're betting?
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: You're usually sitting on the couch.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: So I think if she would have been sitting on the couch, betting, and just like had a football that she was throwing.
- 6:50SPEAKER_02: You know, when you're on the couch and you're holding a football, and what are you doing?
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: You're just kind of like tossing it a little bit.
- 6:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that if they would have been doing something where it was betting, then you're not representing the sports person, you're representing the betting person.
- 7:04SPEAKER_02: Because I can bet my underwear are naked all day long.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: Well, but that's all good.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: You said it's sex sells.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: This is what they're doing.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: But I that's where I'm just saying they could have tweaked that just a little bit because I know when I get home, I'm like, whew, get this bra off.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and nobody nobody was gonna sit there at that point.
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, there's controversy coming out of it, but I think the people that are getting a little upset at this are not seeing this for what it really is, which is know what they're doing here.
- 7:32SPEAKER_03: They literally contracted her, and she's got money in the game, to go after a 22 year old guy that that you know can bet 100, 200, 500 bucks on a weekend.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: I do see the point of wait a second, we've gone this far to make sure that we're getting equal representation.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: But that's not the point of this commercial.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: I well, that's what I'm saying.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: It's she's not doing a sport.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: No.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: But she's not doing a sports.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: Boy, can she handle the balls though?
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Let me tell you.
