- 2:15ahead and get into today's episode as we begin a new Johnny Dollar cereal the
- 2:21Kalen Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Doller, Walt Albright,
- 2:29Johnny Trindady me up, you're limited? Oh hi, and Wald, how's
- 2:31your health? Terrible? Since you ask, I got asthma, Johnny again,
- 2:36I thought we agreed. I know, I get suspicious. I get
- 2:38asthma. Happens every time. What's the case? Walt Man named Eddie Kalen
- 2:45c y l I n Out in Los Angeles died yes to the five thousand
- 2:50dollar policy double indemnity. What did he die of? Mysterius circumstance? Well
- 2:55that's usually a fatal disease, all right, but Johnny, that's all I
- 2:59know, O mysterious circumstances. The body was identified by the widow. I
- 3:04see a salesman out there can probably help you. He issued the policy only
- 3:07six weeks ago at the request to the widow. Six weeks one premium paid
- 3:14check signed by the widow. They tell me something. What the beneficiary happened
- 3:19to be? Right? The widow? Oh, this s asthma is killing
- 3:22me. Johnny, you gotta do something about it, all right, Walls,
- 3:24just call me doctor tonight and every weekday night. Bob Bailey and The
- 3:36Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed Expense Account America's Fabulous Freelance insurance
- 3:42investigator Australey Johnny Deller expense account sumitted by special Investigator Johnny Deller, the home
- 3:57office Trinity Mitchell Insurance Company Limited, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an
- 4:00accounting I've expended yours during my investigation at the Klin matter. I'd on one
- 4:06one hundred and ninety eight dollars and twenty cents a line Fair and Incidental's Hartford
- 4:10of Los Angeles. I had an arranged for anybody to meet me when I
- 4:17arrived at LA so I picked up my bags and headed for the taxis stand.
- 4:23Mister Dollar, please wait a second. He was a small man,
- 4:27nervous and fluttery, with a shiny pink nose and a face like a little
- 4:30white rabbit. I was watching for you out from the ramp, but somehow
- 4:33could you must have slipped by it. You are mister Dollar, aren't you.
- 4:38Yes, I'm Johnny Dollar, but I don't think I am Welch,
- 4:41Presley Welch. I'm oh yeah, sure, the district salesman here for Trinity
- 4:45Mutual. Oh how are you, mister Welch. I'm out of breath at
- 4:48the moment from running, you understand. You see, I'm troubled occasionally by
- 4:53asthma. You two. Do you have asthma? Mister Dollar? No,
- 4:57it's a friend of wine and Hartford. Oh what do you don't say?
- 5:00Yes? In fact, I came out here just to cure it for him
- 5:02out he Oh, this is the worst place you could have come. Oh
- 5:06you see the smile here is soap. Oh no, I do believe you're
- 5:11joshing. I guess I amn't there. Come on, let's add to my
- 5:15expensive count with a cup of coffee. You really think we should? Oh?
- 5:17Why not? Let's be daring, all right? Let's I always say
- 5:21if the company can Aford E. Fressley well sold insurance. The way he
- 5:29answered questions, it was amazing that he hadn't starved to dead years ago.
- 5:32He skidded around the field, flip flopped overhead, and buzzed the tower,
- 5:36all verbally, of course, and for fifteen minutes he didn't touch a wheel
- 5:40to the ground. But when he did finally land, he came in with
- 5:43a swoop. I do hope you'll accept my apologies, mister Dalla, for
- 5:46causing all this trouble, because the whole thing is my fault. Of course,
- 5:49I don't see how unless you murdered Eddie Kalen. Why I scarcely knew
- 5:56a perfect dollaby. Oh no, no, no, no, you misunderstand.
- 5:58I'm just josh. What was I wrote the policy and I knew better
- 6:02right when I did it. Oh what do you mean? Well, mister
- 6:05Killen was quite facetious about the whole procedure. When I tried to point out
- 6:11the retirement security factors in our multiple endowment plan, he actually laughed. You
- 6:15don't say yes, he said, all the security he'd asked for was two
- 6:20aces up and one for the kicking. What about missus Galen? What was
- 6:26her abbit? Well, she was quite serious about it, wasn't she the
- 6:28one who actually applied for the policy? Will not technically the beneficiary curnt You
- 6:32know it's against the rule. Yeah, I know, but didn't She was
- 6:34the one he has that called me and asked me to come out and talk
- 6:36to her husband. And he finally signed the application, but he seemed to
- 6:42regard it as a joke. He only did it as a favor to her,
- 6:46something of that sort. And now it's turned out to be a ten
- 6:47thousand dollars favor. What kind of a woman is she, mister Walt Will
- 6:53She's quiet, well mannered, quite charming. I thought, I must confess.
- 6:57I thought I could do sympathy for her in view of her husband's incessant
- 7:01flippancies. A real happy fellow, positively frivolous, mister Belln. And I
- 7:05should have been worn by his attitude. You know, insurance is a serious
- 7:11business. Oh sure, But Eddie Calan didn't laugh himself to death. Oh
- 7:15no mind, or he died in the fire when his automobile comfort oh laughed.
- 7:20Oh I see what you mean. If they tell me, how well
- 7:24did you get to know the Calan? Oh? Hardly at all. I
- 7:27saw mister Caln twice, once at his apartment the evening I sold him the
- 7:30policy, and then two weeks later at my office when he came in to
- 7:32sign the page. And missus Calon only once that evening at their apartment.
- 7:36She phoned me earlier in the week. And you haven't seen her since her
- 7:40husband's death. No, no, I phoned to express my sympathy, but
- 7:44she wasn't available. She hasn't filed to claim yet. No, but I
- 7:47knew she would, so I took it on myself to notify Hartford. I
- 7:51just can't help feeling guilty about this, you know, Yes, so you
- 7:56mentioned not that I really am, of course, but well you understand it's
- 7:59him. Sure, I understand. Well, I'll keep in touch. Watch
- 8:03out for comedians, mister Welton, Watch out for who comedian expensive count item
- 8:13three six dollars, the thirty five cents taxi fair tot the Beverly Wiltshire Hotel
- 8:18and the second taxi to the West Los Angeles Precinct Police station. The case
- 8:24wasn't being handled by any of the usual Department's Bureau of Homicide, Missing Persons
- 8:28and so on. The man in charge was Detective Sergeant Jose Reinosa on attached
- 8:33working out of the Central District on special assignment. Bill up chair, mister
- 8:35Dollar. When I talk with him in his office, Rainosa told me the
- 8:39reason for it. Yeah, it's a funny deal, mister Dollar. The
- 8:41facts in the case could point a lot of different ways, but the way
- 8:45it stands right now, they just don't add up in any direction, at
- 8:48least not quite. Do you mind filling me in on some of those facts,
- 8:50sergeant, I'll be glad too. Last Thursday morning, at four twenty
- 8:54am, we got a call relay through the fire department to investigate a burned
- 8:58automobile out on the Verdus head Let up in the hills above the harbor.
- 9:03The car was lying in the bottom of a ravine below the road and it
- 9:05was a total loss. Apparently the gas tank had burst and flooded the whole
- 9:09interior. Oh what do you mean? Apparently Ly upholstery may have been deliberately
- 9:13soaked with gas. The arson squad isn't sure. I see. That's why
- 9:16this case doesn't quite fit in any niche mister Dollar. Might be homicide,
- 9:20might be arson, missing person, or only an accident We're not sure yet.
- 9:24Anyway, there was a body in the driver's seat, burned to a
- 9:26cinder, unrecognizable, but we did recover a few personal effects. Signal ring,
- 9:33keychain, wristwatched with a strap burned off, a wallet badly scorched.
- 9:37I noticed the keychain has a metal tang with the address stamped on it.
- 9:41Yeah, that and a part of the driver's license were the only leads.
- 9:46Eddie Kaylin argus Terrace apartments up on Sunnyway Drive above the strip. So we
- 9:50went up there and we ran into a second surprise. What do you mean
- 9:52nobody home? We attained access, found the place in a mess. Apparently
- 9:56been a fight. A chair and a couple of lamps were broken, and
- 10:00they were bloodstains in the living room. What about missus? Klan located her
- 10:03the next afternoon. She'd been spending a few days at friends cabin up at
- 10:07arrow As, the friend confirming she was there alone at her own car.
- 10:11She might have come back to town that night, but we got nothing to
- 10:13prove it or disproven. Right, just another one of those maybes. It's
- 10:18all those cases, a collection of maybes. Yeah, see what you mean,
- 10:22Tommy Sargeant, Just who was Eddie Calyn Eddie Kaylyn. Male, Caucasian,
- 10:30height five eleven, weight one seventy five, complexion, olive hair,
- 10:33medium brown eyes, gray, age thirty four. Birthplace he wanted. He
- 10:37two. He called himself a promoter, then a lot of things, small
- 10:41time agent for a while, handled few singers and dancers, vaudeville and nightclubs,
- 10:46been a bookie off and on, but mainly he was a gambler.
- 10:48Oh and there's another maybe for you now. According to rumor, Eddie was
- 10:52in an all day poker game. It broke up only a few hours before
- 10:54we found the car. The game was supposedly run by a big time gambler
- 10:58named Papo Leany. And the word has it that ed he cleaned up something
- 11:03over sixty thousand dollars. I there's no money found on the body. Nope.
- 11:07Have you talked to this topo sternly? We had him in here for
- 11:11four hours this morning. He never heard of Eddie Kalin, wouldn't know a
- 11:16poker deck if he saw one. Spends all his spare time raising petunias and
- 11:20driving his dear old mother to church like that. Like that. So there's
- 11:24another one for you, maybe, Topo didn't like the idea of losing sixty
- 11:28grand decided to get it back, or maybe the widow wanted the insurance.
- 11:31Or it could be that somebody else took a crack addic man. It's possible,
- 11:35of course, that he mailed the sixty thousand to a blonde Milwaukee and
- 11:39just ran off the road by accident. No, that's possible, but I
- 11:41don't think so. I don't think it was an accident. I'm always getting
- 11:46cases like this. It's a kind they always put me on. Officially,
- 11:50it's because I'm a college man, a majored in criminology, but actually it's
- 11:54because I'm a Latin Mexican ancestry and they know I get certain feelings about a
- 11:58case. Hunches h huh, And how do you feel about this? One?
- 12:01Is hokey, real hokey, and it's murdered, not an accident.
- 12:07But beyond that, gain savvy, why don't you poke into it a little,
- 12:11see what you can find, then maybe we can talk it out some
- 12:13more over a bottle of muscatel. Yeah, good night. Where can I
- 12:16find missus Klan or the widow? Well, that's a good starting point.
- 12:20She's out of their apartment, there's the address. Okay, thanks. Oh
- 12:26just one other thing, Sergeant Reinosa. When you gained access to the apartment,
- 12:31I assume the door was locked. Yeah, it took a little effort.
- 12:35What kind of a lock automatic night lanch springs some in there? No,
- 12:39it was an old fashioned warden boat had to be locked with a key.
- 12:43What are you getting at, mister dollar or hunch of my own,
- 12:48sergeant. Let's save it for the muscatel see you later. Expense account adem
- 12:56for two dollars taxi to the Klan apartment of West Hollywood. It was shortening
- 13:00after dusk by now, and the lights were coming on all over the city.
- 13:03It was a cool, clear night, Los Angeles at its best.
- 13:07As we swung off the sunset Strip and started climbing up into the hills,
- 13:11I looked back across the basin, toward the dark mass of the Palas Verities
- 13:13headland that bounded the far side of the Great Carpet of Lights. Three nights
- 13:18ago, a man had died over there in the darkness, and in a
- 13:20few minutes now I'd be talking to his widow, or at least to the
- 13:24woman who claimed to me his widow. Keep the change the ungus Terrace apartments,
- 13:39like most of them in that section, sprawled up the hillside above the
- 13:41street, six or rate apartments on as many different levels, all opening onto
- 13:46a central patio filled with walks, steps, and banks of tropical plantings.
- 13:50The Cayman's apartment was at the top, and I was still fifty feet from
- 13:52him when the door opened and a man came out and hurried toward me.
- 13:56I stepped back against the shrubbery and waited for him. Good evening, mister
- 14:01Welsh. Oh na, oh, it's you, your second visit to missus
- 14:09Calyn. Second. Oh, yes, yes it is. I imagine you've
- 14:13been notified too, notified. Oh yes, I got a wire from the
- 14:18Home Office in Hartford this evening. That's why I'm here. Well, missus
- 14:22Calyn has filed under the double indemnity clause of the policy a claim for ten
- 14:26thousand dollars. She hopes it can be paid immediately and without any trouble.
- 14:33Well, I don't like to dash your ladies hopes, mister Welsh, but
- 14:35I've got news for the widow news. The claim won't be paid immediately,
- 14:41and before this is over, there's going to be a lot of trouble.
- 14:43Oh. In fact, mister Welsh shift, my aunt's right. This claim
- 14:48is not going to be paid at all, Johnny Dollar, missus Killen.
- 15:07I think mister Welch told you I'd be around to see you. Oh,
- 15:11yes, you're the special investigator the insurance company send out? That's right,
- 15:15mind if I come in? All right, mister Dollar, thanks and through
- 15:20here. Your company didn't waste any time, did they sending you out here?
- 15:24I mean no, no more than you did in filing your claims.
- 15:28I have a right to it. There he gone, Now I need the
- 15:31money. Sit down. Thanks? How many keys are there to that door?
- 15:37Keys? What do you mean your front door? How many keys do
- 15:39you have? Just one? Of course Eddie had one? Why what difference
- 15:46does it make? Just about enough difference to hang somebody? Cigarette missus Killen
- 15:56from Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, location, Los Angeles to the hall offas Trinity
- 16:00Mutual Insurance Company Limited, Hartford, Connecticut, assignment the Killen matter expense account
- 16:04continued. That's quite a dramatic statement, mister Dalla, Are you prepared to
- 16:11name that somebody who may get hanged? Not at the moment. Could it
- 16:15be that you don't have a name. That's possible, of course, if
- 16:18you're just fishing, so to speak, bluffing. Why would I do that
- 16:22with you? I don't know, frankly, but you must have come here
- 16:25for some reason. Yes, I wanted to ask you a few questions,
- 16:27and you'd be smart to answer them under the circumstances. What circumstances. The
- 16:33only one I know anything about is the tragic one of losing my husband only
- 16:36three days ago. You have my sympathy, missus Killen. Sergeant Minosa questioned
- 16:40me for hours. There's nothing more to answer. Will you go now?
- 16:44Please? All right? If you say so, your unwillingness to cooperate will
- 16:48undoubtedly prejudice your claim for the insurance. That's all you care about, isn't
- 16:52it finding some excuse for not paying off the palaces? Killen. I'm not
- 16:56crooking, and neither is the company. If a claim is gentlemen, they
- 17:00pay it always. I'm sick of being under suspicion of being accused. I'm
- 17:03not accusing you of anything. All I'm after is some information, and if
- 17:07you refuse to give it, good night, missus Killen. No wait,
- 17:15wait, mister Dolly, yes, don't go, come back, please,
- 17:22I'm sorry. I've been under such a strain on edge. Forgive me,
- 17:27that's all right, I'd forget it. I didn't mean what I said,
- 17:30but I've answered so many questions, and to go through all of it again,
- 17:36will it seems so pointless? Yes, I understand. But I found
- 17:40that people say things to me sometimes that they forget to say to the police.
- 17:44There are more relaxed I guess, don't feel here on the spot so
- 17:48much. But I thought it was just me. Oh, you're not alone.
- 17:52I remembered something like that. After I talked to serget Minosa. He
- 17:56wanted to know where Eddie hung out, mostly bars and so on. Only
- 18:00think of two. What are the names of the bars? Missus Killen,
- 18:03the elloweenas on Beverly Boulevard and the Brass Monkey in on the strip. What
- 18:10difference does it make? Anyone wasn't killed in the bar. Nobody probably met
- 18:14people there, talk to them. You see. It's a matter now of
- 18:15trying to reconstruct his life step by step, right up to the moment he
- 18:19died. You'd be surprised how much bartenders seeing here. And remember I suppose
- 18:26they do. All right, mister Dollar, I'll be glad to answer any
- 18:32questions you want to ask. One thing, though, I wasn't expecting visitors.
- 18:37Of course, I wonder if I could have just five minutes to change
- 18:41and freshen up a little. Oh that's unnecessary. I won't be here long,
- 18:45but i'd feel better. Really, do you mind? No? No,
- 18:48of course, not go ahead, I'll be right back. Poor yourself.
- 18:52A drink, Johnny. I had the drink and waited and got ready
- 19:04to brace myself. I've been through this before. A tag plan number two,
- 19:10a common garden variety. When you can't beat him, join him,
- 19:14and when the joiner is a lovely woman. A maneuver usually starts with some
- 19:17paraphrase of slip into something more comfortable. Why don't you have a drink?
- 19:22And a sudden switch to first names? And it always ends up with you
- 19:26and I against the world, And couldn't you forget just one little mistake?
- 19:32The little mistake being something like arsenic and a husband's coffee, in an old,
- 19:37familiar pattern and a first resort just as often as a last. She
- 19:41was gone twenty minutes, not five. But it was time well spent,
- 19:47carefully casual touch with a hair, make a skillfully softened perfume and one of
- 19:53those frothy nylon jobs designed for that special evening in you will call charge like
- 20:06another drink journey. Thanks, I still have something I think I could use
- 20:11one? Would you mind? Sure? What do you have? S gotchan
- 20:14soda? Please? Thanks for being so patient. I feel better now,
- 20:21more comfortable, something like that easy on theisoda? Right there you are,
- 20:27missus Killen. Thanks? Would you do something else for me? Oh?
- 20:30I'd be happy to, but I don't know your first name? Tuesday?
- 20:37All right? What are your questions? How do you think it happened?
- 20:41I don't know. Not some enemy, because Eddie didn't have any, just
- 20:48friends, too many friends? Who are some of them? There's only one
- 20:53who really fits the definition, who who's really lasted? His name is Pete
- 20:57Steimer. Pete Steimer. Where can I find him? You can't, or
- 21:00at least the police haven't been able to. Nobody's seen him since that night.
- 21:06He's had nightclubs off and on, and in between him mixed books.
- 21:08What about those other friends? Are the ones who don't last? Drift in,
- 21:14drift out, depending mostly on whether Eddie had any money at the moment.
- 21:18Of course, there were women, all show girls, mostly dancers,
- 21:25strippers. Know any of them, hardly ever hear any of their names.
- 21:29Always made a point not to Otherwise I'd have killed him long ago. Did
- 21:34you kill him? Missus killon? No? Did you love him? That's
- 21:40a good question. I think I'll have to pass it, though I don't
- 21:45really know. I feel all hollow, smashed up inside over what happened.
- 21:56And yet there were times I'd have killed him myself, i'd had a gun.
- 22:00But there were other times too, when it was a crazy sweet you
- 22:03wanted to die because you knew it would never be like that again. Yeah,
- 22:10that's where it was with Eddie Yah, mixed up, like watching a
- 22:15ten ring circus from the front seat in a roller coaster. That's why a
- 22:19women flocked around him. That's why they always ran from him. Later,
- 22:25you didn't run? Could I have another drink? Were you trying to run
- 22:32when you went up to Arl ahead by yourself? Maybe you get a fight.
- 22:37I ran out and told him I wasn't coming back, and only three
- 22:41days later over the radio, I heard where he'd been found dead, burned
- 22:48up in the sky. There you go. I guess they call it shock.
- 22:55I still can't really believe it. Even though I know it's true.
- 22:57Well, I guess you shouldn't. I understand you're the one who identified the
- 23:00body. I identified a wallet, they're in black, the wristwatch, ring,
- 23:07all of them things I bought for him. They told me there wasn't
- 23:11anything that it could be called a body. Yeah, well, I'm sorry,
- 23:15missus call and I know this is painful sight. Like I said,
- 23:18I can't believe it. Really, do you have any other reason for not
- 23:23believing Eddie is really dead? I mean besides just a feeling? No,
- 23:32of course not. What do you mean? What do you mean? Well,
- 23:37always, it's just a question. That's all. Forget it. But
- 23:40let's get back for a moment to another question. You said you were sure
- 23:42it wasn't some personal enemy who killed your husband. Then what do you think?
- 23:47Well, the same is the police. I guess they said Eddie won
- 23:49a lot of money that night from some gambler named Toppo Leanly. You don't
- 23:55know this Topo Leanly, huh No, But I suppose that's why Eddie was
- 23:59killed. He wasn't found, so I guess it was robbery. Did you
- 24:02know about the money? It all happened while I was up an arrowhead anyway
- 24:07Eddie ever had any money, I'd be the last one to know about it.
- 24:11He always spent his money where it would show get something for it.
- 24:14Laughs, bells, whistles, balloons going up, not at home. Never.
- 24:21Yeah, I'm sorry, I forget I said that. I hate women
- 24:23who sit around drooling with self pretty like you said. I didn't run.
- 24:33I guess maybe I did love him, mister d Is there anything else you
- 24:38No? No, I guess not, at least not tonight. And you
- 24:41look a little beat. Yes, I'm afraid I am. You'd go around
- 24:47trying to keep up a front, but it's been rough. Yeah, I
- 24:51imagine what business a while ago fixing myself up a little this robe. I
- 24:59just I had to do it. There are times when a woman has to
- 25:03feel like a woman in order to feel anything. Even saying I guess you
- 25:11wouldn't understand, though, And I'm afraid I gave the wrong impression. No,
- 25:18I think I do understand now. And I also think I owe you
- 25:22an apology for what for walking in here with a preconceived opinion, for being
- 25:26ruled being wrong. I'm sorry, forgiven, forgiven, forgotten, and come
- 25:36back again, please, regardless I might on one condition. Yes your first
- 25:41name, would you mind? It's Lilah. Thanks Lila, good night,
- 25:48good night. I caught a flash of movement from the corner of my eye
- 25:55and world around, just in time to see somebody slip off the corner of
- 25:56the terrace and edging of the shadows of the shrubbery. I stepped off the
- 26:00porch and moved toward the dark hedge of banana and scrub palm. I was
- 26:03watching for a sudden attack, but nothing happened, and I heard a slight
- 26:07sound on the next terrace level up the slope, a rustle of bushes and
- 26:10accidental scrape of a shoe on the cement walk, and I slipped along the
- 26:11walk. I stopped at the head of the steps and listened nothing. The
- 26:18only way out of the patio to reach the street was to come past me.
- 26:22I started searching, but even though I was on guard, when the
- 26:25attack came and caught me off balance, all I could see was a dark
- 26:27shape and the glint of metal and an upraised fist. I grabbed the arm
- 26:30and twisted and drove my left into his stomach and again. He rolled to
- 26:34his knees and raised his right hand, and again I saw the glint of
- 26:37metal. I jumped along, crammed his hand, twisted it back, and
- 26:41at the same time I swung my foot and kicked him in the jaw.
- 26:48All right, yeah, I'm all right. Call Sergeant Reinoso, would your
- 26:52Lilah? It was out? Call. I turned him over on his back,
- 27:00can struck a match to get a look at him. He was a
- 27:02big man, stocky, bullneck, blonde haired. I slid my hand inside
- 27:06his coat and fished out his wallet and opened it. His name was Tompo
- 27:08Leanley. No, here's our star to tell you about tomorrow's intriguing episode of

- 29:17gambler, you know, does save Johnny some trouble by assaulting him, you
- 29:22know, showing up so that way Johnny doesn't have to go and hunt the
- 29:26hunt the guy down. And we'll see, we'll see what's going to happen
- 29:33in this situation in the next episode. I do wonder what Johnny's hunch is.
- 29:37I've got a couple thoughts. I don't actually remember this one, so
- 29:41it'll be interesting to see how this turns out. It was also kind of
- 29:47it was it was kind of odd, almost like how immediately hostile and said
- 29:52he was in the h in his theory from the get go. All right,
- 29:59well, we do have one listener comment here before we go for today,
- 30:06and this one comes from Facebook, and Steve says, listen to several
- 30:11episodes last night. Hard to believe with just radio and budding TV. Hard
- 30:19to believe the level of entertainment was so much better back then with radio and
- 30:26budding to TV than it is today with mass market cable and satellite television.
- 30:32Well it's it's interesting. It's something I discussed in my ebook What made the
- 30:40Golden Age Shine? And one part of the problem identified It's similar to the
- 30:45issue of If you follow pro sports, the issue of expansion is always a
- 30:52big concern. For example, before expansion started back in the sixties, you
- 31:00had a grand total of twenty Major League Baseball teams, and with twenty five
- 31:04person roster, you can you know, you basically I'd be like, you
- 31:10should have the top five hundred players in the world, and you expand to
- 31:15thirty teams. All now it's open to the top seven hundred and fifty players
- 31:18in the world, which means you have two hundred and fifty people playing who
- 31:22wouldn't have at the expansion not started. And that's kind of you know,
- 31:26that's the sports argument. And the same things happened in entertainment, but on
- 31:30a different level. There were a couple of things, uh, you know,
- 31:34I think we're true about entertainment. First, it really had to appeal
- 31:41to a mass market. The ratings of programs like I Love Lucy and Andy
- 31:48Griffiths Show, those were just you know, I'm you know, having drawing
- 31:52is a huge chunk of the population. You had to write something that was
- 31:56good and that would really appear heel to the great mass of the public.
- 32:02With the expansions of cable and all this additional conduct content in television. You
- 32:10no longer have to appeal to that mass market. In fact, you can
- 32:14write something that's a pretty lowbrow and offensive to eighty to ninety percent of the
- 32:19population and you can have a successful program and make money because you don't have
- 32:25the requirements that come when you've got three networks and you really have to draw
- 32:31a big audience if you're going to stay on the air. And so that's
- 32:35part of the reason why the expansion and increasing availability of television and the increasing
- 32:45of channels has actually I think made things less quality. But a good question,
- 32:52and thanks so much for your comment. We'll be back tomorrow with mister
- 32:57Motto and then join us back here on Wednesday as we continue the Eland matter.
