Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is football at four.
- 0:02Speaker 2: If they're going to play that coverage, as a former
- 0:05defensive back, let me tell you something, you have to
- 0:09make them pay. And the Eagles didn't do that until
- 0:12the very end of the game. And so I was
- 0:14getting kind of frustrated with their inability to push the
- 0:17ball down the field.
- 0:18Speaker 3: That is Mike Mayock on the Believe In Eagles podcast.
- 0:22He said he was very frustrated with the Eagles inability
- 0:25to push the ball downfield, not because they couldn't, just
- 0:28because the coverage that they were seeing from the Kansas
- 0:32City Chiefs.
- 0:33Speaker 1: What is going on with the Eagles offense?
- 0:35Speaker 4: Is it?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Is it a problem at all? I mean, they keep
- 0:38winning games, so does that mean it's not a problem.
- 0:41What is this Eagle offense with new coordinator Kevin Patula?
- 0:45Is it confusing?
- 0:47Speaker 1: They do?
- 0:47Speaker 3: They need a better plan to get the ball to
- 0:49Brown or from Mike Mayock as he says, the Eagles
- 0:51need a better plan and he thinks it hurts.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Needs to play more aggressive.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Jeff Boscher from the Inside the Birds podcast, It is
- 0:59Football at four powered by the Inside of the Burns podcast.
- 1:02They brought to you by the Fanatics sportsbook at Ocean
- 1:05Casino in Atlantic City. Bosh, you know a lot of
- 1:07people early in this season looking for things to complain about,
- 1:11and right now it's Kevin Patula and this offense. So
- 1:14what is the Eagle offense through two weeks.
- 1:18Speaker 4: Well, it's it's an offense that's not very explosive.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Through two weeks, it's.
- 1:22Speaker 4: An offense that has been mostly a ground and pound
- 1:27type offense. They've got two big plays in the air,
- 1:30and both of them were important each time. But yeah,
- 1:35I mean, I would agree with Mike's assessment that there
- 1:40is not as much of a downfield attack, and I
- 1:42think the teams are, you know, like the Chiefs. The
- 1:45Chiefs played a lot of too deep on first and
- 1:47second down, and then you know, as we talked about,
- 1:49when it was third down, then they were just bringing
- 1:52the house, which it's hard. It's hard when the house is.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Brought at you.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, you get those one on ones, but
- 1:57your time he gets thrown off, you got guys in
- 1:59your face, free rushers, things like that. Not every team
- 2:02plays defense like that. The Rams certainly don't. So maybe
- 2:06there'll be some opportunities for them to figure out the
- 2:08rest of their offense. This Sunday.
- 2:11Speaker 3: You know when yesterday Adam was talking about you know,
- 2:14Jalen Hurts and the time he has pulling the trigger.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Are there plays that they are leaving on the field.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Yeah, a couple, I mean not. You know, it's not
- 2:25like every other play. They only passed the ball twenty
- 2:28times a game on average, and so if they you know,
- 2:31complete twelve and then there's so we're talking about like
- 2:35eight incompletions, right, or if we're talking about a completion
- 2:38that went to one guy but could have gone to
- 2:40the other. I saw a couple of those situations. But
- 2:44in general, they just don't pass a whole lot, Mike.
- 2:46So it's not like general Hurts is leading plays left
- 2:49right center all over the field.
- 2:53Speaker 3: When you look at this team's offense, how is it
- 2:55different from the Stiking offense to the john offense to
- 3:01what we saw last year with Kellen Moore?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Is this is it the same similar offense?
- 3:07Speaker 4: It's the same. To me, Mike, it is the same offense.
- 3:10I've evenven talked to other people about this. I know
- 3:13there's a whole lot of like, well, this looks more
- 3:15like Brian Johnson's offense than Shanks than Kellen Moore's offense.
- 3:21I'd remind everybody to go back and.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Look at the numbers.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Right, the Eagles offense pass offense was like twenty sixth
- 3:28last year. It was not the It was not flashy.
- 3:32And Mike, you know what, you're the best person to
- 3:34remind people of this because you always have a phrase
- 3:37that I agree with. You always say people remember what
- 3:41they saw last, not most often, right, And so people
- 3:46most remember right now what the offense looked like in
- 3:49the super Bowl and to maybe a larger extent, the
- 3:52NFC Championship game, but sort of forget that for seventeen
- 3:56weeks before that, and then even the first playoff. Their
- 3:58first two playoff games, the Eagles passing offense looked a
- 4:01lot more like the first two weeks of this season
- 4:03than it did the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship game.
- 4:07I would imagine that people are sort of getting tired
- 4:09of having the conversation of why this pass offense looks
- 4:13this way? But then other times it's explosive. Who knows
- 4:17that's just the kids, but is conceptually to answer your question,
- 4:22conceptually what they do, the type of routes that they run,
- 4:26who runs those routes? Those all look very very similar
- 4:30to me as Kellen Moore's offense and even Shase Tyken
- 4:35to Brian Johnson because it has to the Eagles, like
- 4:38most teams, they design plays that fit the strengths of
- 4:43their personnel. Well why do they run a whole go ahead?
- 4:47Speaker 3: What I was gonna interject with is I think one
- 4:50of the things for me anyway, like I don't aesthetically,
- 4:53I don't care what you look like when the game.
- 4:55You're good enough by a young but the schedule this
- 4:57year is more challenging that if your offense can't hold
- 5:00up its end of the bargain, is that going to
- 5:02be something that you end up talking about in Week
- 5:05fourteen and saying, man, this offense just and then you're
- 5:08looking at the personality offense like it's one thing. You know,
- 5:11you got this all this personnel. You're not an explosive offense. Okay, fine,
- 5:15you keep winning, your winning, your winning. You're doing that
- 5:17against the schedule last year that's not nearly as challenging
- 5:20as this year's schedule.
- 5:23Speaker 4: It's a fair point. I guess I would just say,
- 5:25you know, how many playoff teams did the Eagles beat
- 5:28last year? Like teams in the regular season who made
- 5:31the playoffs to the Eagles beat and how did they
- 5:32beat them? They beat the Rams? Right, how did they
- 5:35beat the Rams? Was it a pass offense or did
- 5:37say Klon Barkley rush for two.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Or Well in that game, right, Segua Barkley crushed them.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I mean they beat it and they scored thirty seven
- 5:44point They beat them thirty seven to twenty last year.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Right, So you know they beat the Steelers in a
- 5:50game that was very rare because they passed the ball
- 5:52really well. The Ravens they ran the ball well. They
- 5:56had a few pass plays from Hurts, but I mean
- 5:59the most the schedule is tough, and I do agree
- 6:01with you that at some point, like some of this
- 6:04stuff catches up to you because people study what you do,
- 6:07they figure out your strengths, they exploit your weaknesses. That's
- 6:11why you counteract, Right, That's why the Eagle sign Saquon
- 6:13Barkley last year because people had caught up to what
- 6:16they were doing in the passing game from the year
- 6:18before that was so explosive. Okay, so now the people
- 6:22are gonna lock into Saquon Barkley try to stop him.
- 6:25So far he has no explosive So yeah, it will
- 6:27be on the passing game to look better, and that
- 6:30will be on Ken Batulo. I wasn't trying to absolve
- 6:32anybody or anything. I'm just saying the pass offense is
- 6:35what it is because it's always been well that way
- 6:38from the concepts, And.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I agree with what you're saying.
- 6:41Speaker 3: But you know, I guess you look at it and
- 6:42it's just one of these simple like things when we
- 6:44talk about and like I say all the time, who
- 6:46cares about these lists? Who cares who's the number two
- 6:49five ranked quarterback? But these are the reasons why. Like
- 6:52if you had aj Brown and Devonte Smith and they
- 6:55were in Cincinnati, those guys are gonna have a fifteen
- 6:58hundred yards right. I mean that's where the discord comes
- 7:02in sometimes of look at the talent you have. Are
- 7:05you maximizing the talent that you have on your roster
- 7:09by doing what you're doing? Not that it even but
- 7:13at the end of the day, does it matter if
- 7:14you keep winning the games? I guess until that catches
- 7:17up to you and you end up not winning the game.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean you just I think you just basically
- 7:22articulated the complexity of it right there. It's like you
- 7:25got But.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Do you agree with people that if I said AJ
- 7:27Brown and Devonte Smith were playing in Cincinnati or they're
- 7:31playing in you know, Kansas City, they I mean this,
- 7:35those offenses would be unstoppable.
- 7:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean those are well, I mean no offense.
- 7:40But I think Jamar Chase and T Higgins are about
- 7:43as good as a J. Brown and and I'm sorry, yeah,
- 7:46Jamar Chase and Higgins are as good as what the
- 7:49Eagles have. Yeah, and their their pass office is unstoppable,
- 7:53but they don't win as many games because the rest
- 7:56of the team isn't unstoppable. And that's why it's it's
- 7:59really more about what you are as a team than
- 8:01what you just are as a passing offense. But yes,
- 8:05you still need to be a better passing offense. I definitely.
- 8:08I'm not sitting here trying.
- 8:09Speaker 3: To tell you, well, okay, and then the next point
- 8:12is to say you need to be a better passing offense.
- 8:14We can all kind of agree that has been good,
- 8:16but are they as good of a run offense right now?
- 8:19I know the big thing is Barkley hasn't busted the
- 8:22long one, But do you like what you've seen from
- 8:25the running game through the first couple of weeks. Does
- 8:27that look similar to the running game that we saw
- 8:29a year ago.
- 8:31Speaker 4: I don't think it's bad, but I definitely think that
- 8:33the backbone and the identity of it would say Klon Barkley,
- 8:38and we really only have last year as our sample size,
- 8:40is that he's going to get you. You know, sixty
- 8:44percent of his runs are going to be those three
- 8:46to five yard runs and then he's going to pop
- 8:49two or three with his athleticism that are backbreaking fifty
- 8:53yard runs. And he just hasn't had that yet. So
- 8:56I but I don't, I don't. I don't dislike what
- 9:01I've seen. He's still averaging, he has still has a
- 9:03decent average. I mean, he rushed for a touchdown last game.
- 9:06Jalen Hurts is still a part of the rushing offense
- 9:09when he runs on third down and things like that.
- 9:11I think they're fine. And I think we'd all be
- 9:13foolish if we thought that the whole year is gonna
- 9:16go this way where Barkley's not gonna pop a long run. Yeah,
- 9:19and you know, maybe more than one in a game.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Well, and obviously, yeah, he hasn't done that, but he
- 9:24has done it against the Rams. He had monster game
- 9:27against him in the playoffs. He had a monster game
- 9:29against them in I think they played in Week twelve
- 9:32last year. Talking with Jeff Mosher Football at four, you know,
- 9:35and look, the reason why you look at the offense
- 9:39under such a you know, under scrutiny is because of
- 9:42the talent they have, right, And then it feeds off
- 9:45the fact where people look at Hurts, he's the more
- 9:48most polarizing guy probably in the league when it comes
- 9:52to oh, he's the twelfth best guy, Well he's the
- 9:55fifteenth best guy. No, how do you say he's not
- 9:57the fifth best guy? Well, how come he's not top three?
- 10:00That is where this conversation is always so bonkers, with
- 10:04him leading the way and people saying, well, we have
- 10:07him too low on this crazy list. But the way
- 10:10the Eagles run their offense almost feeds into them believing it.
- 10:15Speaker 4: I mean, you're right, did you start to get off
- 10:18the rails then with things like that, you know, My
- 10:21only issue ever is with the hypocrisy of the argument,
- 10:24because if the argument is that Jalen Hurts is like,
- 10:28you know, a number one, number two, number three, because
- 10:30all he he only just wins. Yeah, well, then for
- 10:34the fans, Eagles fans we say that, then I guess
- 10:37they all agree. Eli Manning is a first Ball Hall
- 10:39of Famer because he's won two championships and not too many.
- 10:42And Joe fla Joe Flacco must have been the best
- 10:46quarterback in the league for the first seven years of
- 10:48his careers in the playoffs. Every year he won a
- 10:49Super Bowl, he won a Super Bowl MVP, he had
- 10:52a game winning touchdown to Lee Evans in the AFC
- 10:55Championship game in New England, dropped or else they would
- 10:57have been in the Super Bowl that year. I mean
- 10:59he would. It's great if you're just judging all he
- 11:02does is win Joe Flacklers first seven years or as
- 11:04good as anybody.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Yeah, but well, I.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Don't know that I would get that people admitting.
- 11:08Speaker 1: That, yes, well, and the same discourse of.
- 11:12Speaker 3: People being offended that Hurts is so low on the
- 11:15list are now complaining that the offense isn't doing enough.
- 11:20Speaker 4: And there's that too, right exactly. You know, every season
- 11:24sort of brings on its new topics and storylines. I
- 11:27just try to keep it to like, wow, who are
- 11:29they playing? What's the opponent.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Well, I know yesterday we were talking about it, and
- 11:33you know, a guy like Dan Orlowsky points out, Wow,
- 11:36they're running the same pass play ten times, you know,
- 11:39the same past pattern, and you're wondering, could is there
- 11:42more meat on the bone even as limited as they
- 11:46as limited times as they pass in a game, you
- 11:48only gotta throw the ball twenty times.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Okay, make the twenty count.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Uh yeah, so that's fair, right. I mean, if anything,
- 11:57if you want to do a comparison between Kellen Moore
- 12:00and Petullo and sort of throw patula under the bus,
- 12:03I mean Kellen Moore's so they might be picking from
- 12:07the same menu, the same play, calls, the same play designs.
- 12:10But Kellen had been a coordinator a couple of times,
- 12:14had had a lot of experience with it. There is
- 12:16something to be said for a feel of the game
- 12:18and when to call the right plays. And I think
- 12:21it's obvious to expect that Kevin Patula might not have
- 12:25that feel that Kellen Moore had last year for calling
- 12:30the right play at the right time, because it's just
- 12:32his first year in it. But you know what, like
- 12:34you got to give a guy a chance to grow
- 12:36you can't every single year just go out and get
- 12:39yourself a five time play calling offensive coordinator. Like the
- 12:43fans have to realize. I've seen things on my owner.
- 12:46You don't hire a guy like that. You don't do that. Why,
- 12:49I mean, you have to, you know, you sometimes you
- 12:52have a choice. You gotta give a guy a chance
- 12:54to grow something well.
- 12:56Speaker 3: And I guess you know the one area where I
- 12:58can see like people having PTSD is well, you were
- 13:03ten and one with Brian Johnson. You were winning games,
- 13:06but it never looked good and then eventually the whole
- 13:10thing game crashing down. I mean, I don't know that
- 13:13we have the parallels of that season to this season
- 13:15at this point right now, but through two weeks, very
- 13:19small sample sized, Jeff Mocher, do we say that they
- 13:22have more issues on the offense did they do on
- 13:24the defense? And how is that even possible when you
- 13:25have six new players on defense that have the same
- 13:28offense back.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they clearly clearly they have more issues
- 13:32on the offensive defense right now through two weeks. I mean,
- 13:37I know Kansas City gave up a decent amount of
- 13:39points in the Chargers in Week one, but I mean
- 13:42Kansas City has been a pretty good defense for the
- 13:44last four or five years, and you were in Kansas City,
- 13:47so I think that that's gotta be taken into account too. Plus,
- 13:50the game plan that Spags put in was really good.
- 13:53I was expecting something more like that to the Super Bowl,
- 13:56to be honest with you. So I mean there's that
- 13:58element to it. It's just two weeks, but yeah, it
- 14:02is surprising. I think that you would have thought the
- 14:04offense would have hit the ground running a little bit better.
- 14:07That's fair.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Are you looking at this defense and really looking at man,
- 14:12if they're at this stage through two weeks, where are
- 14:14they going to be in twelve weeks?
- 14:17Speaker 1: Well?
- 14:18Speaker 4: Yes, I mean the whole turnover creation thing has been
- 14:22amazing because I have a weird feeling we're gonna have
- 14:24a stretch of the year we're gonna be like, man,
- 14:26this defense hasn't created takeaways like it was, and now
- 14:29it's really hurting the overall team because sometimes that stuff
- 14:33comes in bunches. But I will say that you guys
- 14:36have been very consistent going back to last year to
- 14:39the first two games. I mean not just takeaways, but
- 14:41at huge critical moments, punching the ball away from Miles
- 14:46Sanders in the red zone, intercepting Patrick Mahomes to Kelser
- 14:50Kelsey in the end zone. I mean those those were
- 14:54you take those two plays away, they may lose those
- 14:56two games.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Oh, listen the.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Kelsey drop and then mccouba being there to pick it
- 15:04off was you know, you might lose it.
- 15:06Speaker 1: You're right, you might lose that game.
- 15:08Speaker 3: We're talking about a different game possibly if mccoob is
- 15:10not Johnny on the spot and he has been that guy,
- 15:13and you you know, you look at what he's added
- 15:15to this defense. Zadarius Smith, when he's kind of added
- 15:18to this defense, I'm intrigued. He played twenty snaps last week.
- 15:22How much bigger or different of a role he has?
- 15:25As this kind of meticulates, do you think he ends
- 15:27up having a bigger role than or is that what
- 15:30he is?
- 15:30Speaker 1: He's the twenty snap guy.
- 15:33Speaker 4: No, I think he can have a bigger role, and
- 15:35some of that will be dependent on injuries, some of
- 15:37it will be dependent on, you know, how impactful Jex
- 15:41Hunt is. You know, he's still a young kid learning
- 15:43how to play the position. And Zadarius Smith just hits
- 15:47the ground running in his first game, and oh, my god,
- 15:50Nick Sangelo is hysterical. I mean, he just totally takes
- 15:54the NFL and their acclamation ramp up period in training
- 15:57camp to the woods. Yes see, is not really fair
- 16:01because like just because he didn't what if he gets
- 16:04hurt this week? Yeah, I mean he didn't really give
- 16:06it a whole lot of time and emphasis. I get
- 16:08that he's old school, but you know, I think they're
- 16:10the acclamation I don't think this one example just proves
- 16:14that the acclamation period is a complete farce. But that's
- 16:17just my opinion.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Jeff Boscher Football for Here on a sports Batch Wednesday,
- 16:21Eagles getting ready for the Rams. Eagles defense obviously creating
- 16:26some turnovers or creating some pressure. I don't know right now,
- 16:31this defense it's gonna be. I'm interested to see how
- 16:34much more this defense grows and what more they do
- 16:36with this defense, because there's a lot of guys that
- 16:38are new.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Still.
- 16:39Speaker 3: He can't be feeling like he can do everything that
- 16:42he wants to do yet. I gotta imagine that he's
- 16:44having a blast right now thinking what more I could
- 16:46add with the with the group that I have.
- 16:49Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm really curious with this defense. You know,
- 16:52in the first game he played, Vic played Quinna Mitchell
- 16:56exclusively on George Pickens. And then this last game he
- 17:00was fascinating. He actually played Queenya Mitchell in one spot,
- 17:04but he played him as the field cornerback that you know,
- 17:07not the boundary, which is the sideline corner. Usually most teams,
- 17:11I know, most coordinators know, like to put their best
- 17:14corner on the boundary, but Vic did it with the
- 17:18opposite way with Quinya Mitchell, and I'm not sure what
- 17:22his rationale was for that. It was very interesting to me,
- 17:24and I'll be curious to see how he lines them
- 17:27up well against the Rams.
- 17:28Speaker 3: Well especially against the Rams, because they got Adams and
- 17:31they've got Nakua, so two totally different style of receivers.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Yeah, but the only thing is that is similar to
- 17:37the Cowboys, and where Adams is an X like Pickens
- 17:40and the Kupa is a movement player like Lamb. So
- 17:44if he decides that he's gonna put Quinnya Mitchell on
- 17:46Devonte Adams, then we might have another adri Jackson matchup
- 17:51against Nakua that probably is not gonna favor Dori Jackson.
- 17:54I think I'm being kind of saying that.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Well listen, you know his name didn't come up nearly
- 17:59as much this past week.
- 18:00Speaker 1: But man, if they would have.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Connected on that ball to Thornton down the scene there
- 18:05and you see Dorr Jackson colliding with a guy flopping
- 18:08on the ground like West and Wilson playing left field,
- 18:11that wouldn't have been a good day for him on
- 18:13a Monday. No, they were not stay up for the
- 18:17game last night, make it.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Two nights ago. Yes, last night I tried, but it
- 18:23did not make it. I would, but you know, it
- 18:25just like a cool sort of pleasant surprise right when
- 18:28you're waiting up next morning and you realized, holy cow,
- 18:32that's not what I thought.
- 18:33Speaker 1: That was me Monday last night.
- 18:35Speaker 3: I made it to the end do in large part
- 18:37because my buddy from LA was texting me back and
- 18:40forth the whole time, so it kind of kept me awake,
- 18:42and I was like, I.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Guess I've made it this far.
- 18:45Speaker 3: When I got to six to six, I almost said,
- 18:47I'll find out what happens tomorrow. But I'm glad I
- 18:50stayed up to the end there and watched the finish
- 18:53of that one. But it's made me cranky today. Man,
- 18:55it's maybe a little cranky. We're gonna have to do
- 18:57more motion mail bags. We got a lot of people
- 18:59texting in question for Jeff, so maybe Wednesdays we'll try
- 19:03to do some more Mosher mailbacks. So people seem to
- 19:05like that in the summertime, Mosher on a Wednesday here
- 19:08because Monday we have a lot of reaction to the
- 19:10actual game. But Monday, Wednesday seems to be a good
- 19:13Mosher mail bag day for football at four. And of
- 19:15course it's brought to you by the Fanatic Sports Book.
- 19:17I'll be there on Monday every Monday at the Fanatic
- 19:20Sports Book and Monday with Jeff Moscher and Wednesday with
- 19:23Jeff Moscher. The Eagles getting ready to take on the Rams,
- 19:27and you can hear that game right here on ninety
- 19:29seven three. Is it looks like Goddard's gonna play?
- 19:31Speaker 1: Huh?
- 19:32Speaker 4: Well, I mean he's back in practice today, so after
- 19:34a good sign, that's usually a case that he will.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Yeah, yep, and that Uh, I don't know, I don't
- 19:39know what that adds are Obviously it adds to the
- 19:41blocking element. I guess it doesn't add to a past
- 19:44game all that much because Goddard's a I mean Calcatara
- 19:46is a pretty good receiving tight end.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Yeah, but no, it does add I mean, look at
- 19:51the Goddard led them in receptions and receiving yards and
- 19:54in the postseason he's a big weapon for them.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Yeah, no, no doubt about it.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I'm not you know, I'm just saying cal Katara is
- 20:00is a capable pass catcher.
- 20:01Speaker 1: He just where he struggles is the first play of
- 20:04the game. He gets dusted. He can't you know, he
- 20:06can't block. Uh. But we'll all right, buddy, We'll talk
- 20:09to you. Mike
