- 2:32to talk about that, coming up a little bit later on in the show.
- 2:36Also State Treasurer and congressional candidate Riley Moore is here as well. Want
- 2:38to welcome to the show, though, First up Metrodows State right of course
- 2:40finded Brad Michael Honey. Brad, Good morning, how are you? Oh
- 2:44Hey, good morning, I'm doing good. Lots to get to this morning.
- 2:47As I mentioned about Xavier's being on the court but sending me on a
- 2:54spiral of career doom I'll be great, all right, Well, I won't
- 3:00do that, but I did kind of tease the top of the show that
- 3:04there's more than this Bob Huggins situation. Of course, we have a complete
- 3:07story post at wd metro news dot com and I'll get into that a little
- 3:09bit more on the show with Jeff Jenkins. But you know you and also
- 3:15I'm wanted to spend some time talking about it tomorrow on the show as well.
- 3:19You're a government guy though, and I'm not going to put you on
- 3:21the spot here much with the Huggins, but you know, coach Huggins is
- 3:23the highest paid state employee. I mean, we kind of forget that sometimes
- 3:27the highest paid employee in the state is not the governor, it's not anybody
- 3:31that works in the tax department or anything. It is former Westvin Human's basketball
- 3:37coach Bob Huggins. Does any of that way into all this mass with you,
- 3:40that we are talking about this as it pertains to the highest paid state
- 3:46employee in the state, Well, you know, I will tell you,
- 3:49as a matter of timing and self awareness by Coach Huggs, the rest of
- 3:57the university is going through this right which we're going to get to, yeah,
- 4:01forty five million dollars down on the upcoming budget, and the university is
- 4:06previewing its departments, there are reductions in force. Most university employees are not
- 4:14going to lose their jobs. That is not much compensation if you are one
- 4:18of the people who does. And at the same moment, the very same
- 4:25moment, you've got the highest paid public employee in the state, Huggins,
- 4:30who just went through back to back scandals, who now is taking the position
- 4:38that he should still have his job. And it's you know, if you
- 4:42put the two things side by side, they're running simultaneously. It's it's just
- 4:46incredible when you compare his position and his situation with you know, your your
- 4:54average college professor at WVW worried about whether their program's going to get closed,
- 5:00whether they're going to be able to make the mortgage. You know, the
- 5:03member of the staff at WVU who's maybe put in however many years and their
- 5:10job is getting closed out. It's it's just incredible that he is just absolutely
- 5:16taking it to the match after back to back scandals, when the rest of
- 5:20WVU is worried about whether they're going to have a job. And I think
- 5:24that is an interesting parallel between the two situations. Anyhow, I'll get back
- 5:28to the hugging situation with Jeff Jenkins coming up a little bit later on the
- 5:30show. All right, let's talk about what's going on at West Virginia University.
- 5:34You've filed several reports on air and on the website about this. About
- 5:38half of the academic programs at West Virginia University brad or under review. Yes,
- 5:46and that doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to be closed out, but
- 5:49for a variety of reasons, mostly having to do with the size of the
- 5:56program or declining enrollment, those kinds of trends. There are, yeah,
- 6:02about half of either the programs or the academic units at WVU that are going
- 6:10to be further reviewed, and it could be with some of them there's there's
- 6:14no change in the end, but with others there could be reductions in terms
- 6:19of the staff supporting whatever program. There could be a close out entirely.
- 6:26They could be combined with other programs at the school. And with that kind
- 6:31of thing that the potential of combining, WVU tried to put, you know,
- 6:35kind of an optimistic based on it. They're trying not to panic people.
- 6:40But to say that there could be advantages combining this program with that program.
- 6:45Maybe maybe there's uh, you know, creative ways that they could function
- 6:49together. So over the next few weeks, this review is going to continue,
- 6:56and by September, WVU potentially likely is going to make some tough decisions
- 7:01about what program should remain and what would not. There were a couple that
- 7:06caught my eye in terms of what's under review. The public health program at
- 7:14w VIEW and I don't know the details. I mean, maybe maybe fewer
- 7:18kids are going into that. It just struck me that West Virginia is a
- 7:23pretty unhealthy state and could stand to have a strong public health program. The
- 7:28school, the law school of all things, Am I wrong? The only
- 7:31law school in the States, is I mean yeah? And and I think
- 7:35again, Brad, to jump into what you said there, the fact that
- 7:40we are the most unhealthy state in the Union, and we're probably probably have
- 7:44our fair share of attorneys that we have to call upon from time to time
- 7:47that though I don't know any we have any more than any other state.
- 7:49But but those two things being under review, or having having a cloud over
- 7:54them is kind of problematic, you know. Ap the associated Press got more
- 8:01into some of the specific programs than I did. My thought in doing the
- 8:05story was, well, I mean, if if half of the programs a
- 8:07wview are under review, there's no synth in listing them because you know,
- 8:13flip a coin. Yeah. But AP John Raby at the AP got a
- 8:18little more into that, and he lists engineering and mineral resources. I mean,
- 8:22it's West Virgineer for crying out, and this is the things that we
- 8:24build ourselves on? Is it minerals and resources? So how do we give
- 8:28in this situation? Brad? I mean, how does this sort of thing
- 8:30happen? I guess that's the sixty four thousand dollars question, as they say,
- 8:33but how did we get here? What w view points to is a
- 8:37couple of things. Essentially a declining level of student enrollment paths overall that students,
- 8:46of course pay tuition, and tuition counts as dollars towards these programs.
- 8:52They also count as people who who wind up in housing. And so if
- 8:58if student rollman is declining, WV can't afford the things that it once did.
- 9:05The other aspect of that is a little bit of post COVID response that
- 9:09if the world has changed and students are making different decisions than they once did.
- 9:16Um the effects of inflation have not entirely worn off, so that's caused
- 9:22additional expenses for WWU. And then you know there are there are other factors
- 9:28that university points toward less, but that close observers point toward more. One
- 9:35has been a question of whether WVU overexpanded in terms of its its capital improvements,
- 9:48whether it built up too much, particularly under the under the tenure of
- 9:52Warden g and now can't afford the things that it built. Another question has
- 9:58been the level of state funding, which generally has dropped off, particularly when
- 10:03you look at the inflation rate. So you know, if if if the
- 10:09legislature had continued to allocate, adjusted for inflation, a level amount for higher
- 10:16education, would WVU be in this situation, might have closed the gap.
- 10:20That's that's the question. There so a variety of things, but the bottom
- 10:24line WV says is we didn't count on such a steady change in student behavior
- 10:31that students are just not picking to BVU at the rate that they used to.
- 10:35And of course there's going to be a bigger spotlight on WVU because it
- 10:37is the land Grand institution. It is the largest university of the state.
- 10:41But it would be interesting to possibly have this conversation with a Marshall University at
- 10:45some point, which will we'll work on. I want to switch gears here
- 10:48quickly, Brad, and I want to talk some more dollars and cents though,
- 10:52uh and as in you've got to have a lot of dollars or it
- 10:54makes no sense. See what I did there to even attempt to run for
- 10:58office these days. There are some figures that came out on Friday, So
- 11:03help our listener, I'm talking about political candidates, of course, help our
- 11:05listeners understand the importance of the numbers that came out and were made made public
- 11:11on Friday as far as the of the campaign contributions go, well, that
- 11:16governor's race, so to my mind, the fundraising for governor and the recent
- 11:22poll by the Chamber of Commerce almost for candid in hand, and what I
- 11:28saw out of that, in fairness, hopefully all the candidates, sorry everybody,
- 11:33but you know what you see is Patrick Morrissey, the current Attorney General
- 11:37and more capita, son of the US Senator and the House Judiciary chairman.
- 11:43What you see is them jumping out in front in both situations. The polling
- 11:48by the Chambers showed them thirty one for Morrissey, thirty percent for more Capita,
- 11:54and the other candidates lagging behind somewhat. The fundraising shows you something similar.
- 12:01Morrissey reported raising one point three million dollars in the most recent fundraising period.
- 12:07He had a he had a fundraising filing of more than four hundred pages,
- 12:13and in the bank. He's got a little over a million dollars cash
- 12:18on hand. Morrissey doesn't. More Capita raised less during the period two hundred
- 12:26and eighty eight thousand dollars during the quarter, but has about a million dollars
- 12:31overall in his campaign funds that he can spend. The other candidates were a
- 12:37bit less. But the wild card is Chris Miller, the auto dealer,
- 12:39the son of Congressman Congressmoman Carol Miller. He's got more than three million dollars
- 12:45in the bank, but much of it is his own money, so it's
- 12:48there as a political weapon if he wants to use it, but it's not
- 12:50been clear yet because he's going to harness his own dollars and put it into
- 12:54the race. I think if I were a Betty Man which I am.
- 12:58I would have to say, yeah, he's he's probably gonna do that,
- 13:01all right, Brad, we gotta we gotta leave it here. I do
- 13:03want to ask you, what do you watch you today? Everybody's keeping an
- 13:05eye on Huggins. I know you are as well, and Jeff and the
- 13:09news team Mark too, but what else are you taking a look at today
- 13:11in the in the in the scope of news, Brad Well, in an
- 13:16obligatory thing, we've done stories about how the Mountain Valley pipeline is clear to
- 13:20go. The Congress made it so that it would get through all of its
- 13:26regulatory hurdles. Well, there was a court ruling just last late yesterday yesterday
- 13:33evening, saying that the challenge the right of Congress to clear the decks that
- 13:37way, and the Mountain Valley pipeline is yet again on hold. So it
- 13:43feels like a bit of a yo yo situation, to be honest. But
- 13:46because we reported it's clear to go, we now need to report that it
- 13:50is not so clear to go. Okay, and you'll be keeping an eye
- 13:54on that all day, as I know you have, Brad always as always,
- 13:56a great job, sir, and we will talk soon. Thanks.

- 17:42have a majority of elderly citizens just curious. Well, I think we're an
- 17:48unhealthy state. We even if you take the elderly out. I think a
- 17:51press of company included on that. Dave's student enrollment, it's declining because the
- 17:56cost of college is more expensive and the return is a comparable tuition. Housing
- 18:00get raised to pay for the big salaries of Huggins and Gee and ridiculously lavash,
- 18:04slavish sports complexes. Perhaps I have an academic institutions need to get back
- 18:10to being academic institution instead of sports factories. Well, the problem with that
- 18:14is, and I don't disagree entirely with what the callers or the texture is
- 18:18saying there, but the problem is you can't have those big academic facilities without
- 18:22sports because that's what pays the bills. That's just kind of the way we
- 18:26are. Stay Treasure and candidate for Congress, Riley Morris, here's Treasure.
- 18:30Good morning, Dave, Good morning all. Yes, sir, great,
- 18:33it's good to see you. Good to see you as well. Um,
- 18:36So, before we get to the treasure stuff, how's they how's the campaign
- 18:38going form? It is going great. Um, you know, we're certainly
- 18:42winning. I think we're gonna prevail in this election, and you know we're
- 18:48gonna keep working hard. We're out there talking to people, generating more and
- 18:52more support every day every month. You know, we've got a quarter coming
- 18:56up here. We're gonna report we've outraised every one it consistently, and I
- 19:00think that's going to continue in that way. And as we've seen some public
- 19:03polling out there, you know we're far and away in the lead. I
- 19:07think it's if we keep the pressure on Key porking hard, it's going to
- 19:11remain that way. I want to get back to your day job right now,
- 19:15and that is the state treasurer. I see your office putting out all
- 19:21all kinds of infa all the time about unclaimed properties and a lot of cash
- 19:23that's gone back to West Virginia's recently to the tune of twenty six point three
- 19:27million dollars. Now, this is the first time, and reading some of
- 19:32your literature, the first time the state has ever gone past the twenty million
- 19:34dollar threshold. So I guess, I guess. The first question is,
- 19:37mister treasure just for clarity, how does your name and how does an individual's
- 19:42name end up on this list saying that you have unclaimed property. Oh yeah,
- 19:47So that's a great question because people ask all the time what is unclaimed
- 19:49property. Unclaimed property is essentially dormant financial assets. And let me put that
- 19:56in plain language. Let's say you had a bank account that went dormant,
- 20:00means it's not been acted upon in years and essentially through time. It is
- 20:07then found to be dormant, and the bank then turns that money over to
- 20:10the state. It could be securities that have gone dormant. It could be
- 20:14checks that are stale and what I mean by that they were never cashed.
- 20:18Then their returned to the state. So life insurance policy could be that as
- 20:22well, that has gone dormant and then was never acted upon. So as
- 20:26eventually those things come back to the state Treasurer's office, as they do in
- 20:30every state in America. And so we have three hundred million dollars in unclaimed
- 20:37property, about three million different potential claims out there, and my job is
- 20:41to return that money to its rightful owner. And now let's say that riful
- 20:45owner has deceased and it does pass on to the next akin as well,
- 20:48and we've had that happen as well as some of the claims. So that's
- 20:52it. In a nutshell, is what unclaimed property is, and we got
- 20:55a whole lot of it. So how how do you go back getting into
- 20:57touch with people to let though that they have money waiting on them. Well,
- 21:02we do outreach through our field staff, but then we also send letters
- 21:06out to individuals. So if you get a letter from my office that says
- 21:11you have unclaimed property, this is not a scam. It is on our
- 21:15letterhead. It is official. Say, how do you know the difference?
- 21:17I mean, most scammers don't use the mail for one thing, my phone
- 21:21call or whatever. But but it's on it's on letterhead. Yes, it
- 21:25is on letterhead, it has my signature on it, and it is real,
- 21:30and you can call the number that is on that letter that we send
- 21:33to you. But most importantly, we have a new program, and this
- 21:37is how we broke records. Really, we modernized unclaimed property. I had
- 21:41a bill two sessions ago that modernize the Unclaimed Property Act. That's enabled us
- 21:47to return so much unclaimed property. And part of that is the cash Now
- 21:52program. So in between a hundred and five thousand dollars, we can just
- 21:59automatically send that money out to those individuals who the property belongs to and last
- 22:07year we sent out about four million dollars worth of checks. Now, not
- 22:11all of those checks were cash because I think some people are not sure if
- 22:14it is real. That is why I'm on the radio here with you today,
- 22:18Dave, to tell the listeners it is real. When we send you
- 22:22a check, you will see an official check from the State of West Virginia
- 22:26with my signature on it as well as the auditor JB. Mccusky. We
- 22:30sign all checks that come from the state of West Virginia, and you see
- 22:33those two signatures and the letter that accompanies that that is real. That is
- 22:37real money, and please cash those checks. And I'm happy to announce it.
- 22:42Next week our office is going to start the second round of cash now
- 22:48checks coming out and we're talking about four point two million dollars that we're going
- 22:53to start sending out, So please cash those checks. So I mean,
- 22:57what you're saying is I could have gotten a check in the mail U S
- 23:00sent to my home and I get it out and I think, Okay,
- 23:03this is publisher's clearing house or something something like that, or one of those
- 23:07two cent checks that you get on a rebate for something, and I get
- 23:11a check and people could just be tossing these things away. Yes, and
- 23:14that has happened where they get tossed. Now, the good news is if
- 23:18you toss that check, it does come back to unclaimed property, and so
- 23:22the check then those dollars then retained with us and we will make a second
- 23:26or third, or however many attempts it takes to get that money back to
- 23:30its rightful owner. I want to talk about the scam aspect, and I
- 23:33actually got a text about this. Somebody said that they that they were contact
- 23:36and I've had actually other people that have contacted the of the show in the
- 23:40past about this and said that they were contacted and that they were asked for
- 23:42a social Security number. Now, your office, are they going to do
- 23:47that? Are they going to ask for so we do have to verify uh.
- 23:49There there is a verification method within this. But you know, if
- 23:55you are not sure, uh, and somebody is asking for that, look
- 24:00go to w V Unclaimed Property dot gov and we lay out all the different
- 24:06kinds of documents that we're going to need to be able to verify that.
- 24:10You can also call our number if you don't feel comfortable taught. If somebody
- 24:14has called you and you don't feel comfortable, call our number. It's on
- 24:19our website wv Treasury dot com. You can go there wv Treasury dot gov
- 24:25and call our mainline and or click on unclaimed property and call that mainline and
- 24:32just verify it with us. We do this. We have claimant specialists that
- 24:34just answer calls and emails all day long. Okay. And because that,
- 24:40as I said, I've had people reach out to the show. Actually had
- 24:41somebody in my family contact me about that and they said, well, they
- 24:44wouldn't ask for my Social Security number. Well we could that that could be
- 24:48part of that. I've learned something today. Yeah, And you know,
- 24:52it just depends on what type of property we're talking about. How we're trying
- 24:56to verify that on our end, and the best thing would be to call
- 25:00the office. I mean, if you have a question, you talked to
- 25:02a live human being. When you call the office, we have live human
- 25:04beings. They're just waiting to answer your phone. Call tech, says Dave.
- 25:08It was very cool to see former mountaineer Owen Schmidt be presented an unclaimed
- 25:12property check of almost ten thousand dollars at Mountaineer Field. Yes, oh my
- 25:17gosh, that's the runaway beer truck. The runaway beer truck. And I
- 25:19was flashing back. I'm sure the listening audience remembers this, and you do
- 25:22too. I was talking to him. I was like, I remember seeing
- 25:26you and Pat White and Steve Slayton on the cover of Sports Illustrated. You
- 25:32were right, remember the three of them, they were sitting there on the
- 25:33cover Sports Illustrated. What an amazing team that was. And to be able
- 25:38to meet him, he still looks like he's ready to play. Yes,
- 25:42he is in very good shape. He looks like he's ready to go.
- 25:47He mentioned when we got the unclaimed property check back to him, and part
- 25:52of that check, by the way, was a payment from the NFL.
- 25:55And really, yes, yes, because I think he knew treasure. I
- 26:00think when you hear uncleimed property, people automatically assume that it's property, that
- 26:03it's a land and in Hancock County or something that's not necessarily what it is.
- 26:08No, no, it's not. This was it check that went uncashed.
- 26:11That was to Owen Schmidt from the NFL. Oh okay, and uh,
- 26:17it may have gone to the wrong ad dress or what have you.
- 26:19And so then the the check uh then remits to us, and then we
- 26:26we saw his name on there. I'm like the runaway beer truck that Now
- 26:32it turns out it was Wow. Yeah, I'll actually be with Owen Schmidt
- 26:36later this week a up in Morgantown. And he can still knock the crap
- 26:38out of a golf ball too. I've seen that on Friday. That would
- 26:41not surprise me. When I was talking to him up there, uh in
- 26:45Morgantown, he was like, yeah, you know, I'm probably gonna get
- 26:48a workout in while I'm here. I'm like, made you look like you're
- 26:51ready to play. We had a text here for we gonna know you gotta
- 26:53go to do some other things with Texas. For Riley Moore, what has
- 26:56been the largest uncleaned property dollar I'm out ever given to one person? Oh
- 27:00gosh, off top of my head. Some of them that are rather large.
- 27:08The individuals don't like to be identified. But we're close to half million
- 27:15dollars somewhere in that ballpark. So all right, So tell people where they
- 27:18can log on for more information. I mean, yeah, we have an
- 27:22online database now and that's at WV Unclaimed Property dot gov. That's we now
- 27:29have the dot gov there to ensure people that this is not a scamp.
- 27:33You can also go to wv Unclaimed Property dot Com if you'd like, you
- 27:37know, to revert to the dot gov, but we have an online database.
- 27:41You can search your name there. That's been part of our modernization in
- 27:44this process. That's allowed us to be able to return a record setting amount
- 27:48of unclaimed property back to the citizens of West Virginia. And go to that
- 27:51website. Look your name up, look your grandparents up, your parents,
- 27:53your aunt's, uncle's, cousins, anybody, and let them know that you
- 27:57got unclaimed property out there. If you have one of those big amounts.
- 28:00Just remember the Dave is your cousin. Yeah, that's right to Just remember
- 28:03to look up cousin day All right, final thing, very important before you
- 28:08get out of here. You and I have been known to text back and
- 28:11forth about the NFL on Sundays. I'm a Cowboys fan. You're a team
- 28:14of the Hold on, now, I'll cut the microphone. You're a fan
- 28:18of the team known as the Commanders. Do you want to go ahead and
- 28:21get the division title to the Cowboys? Now? Negative? And look we're
- 28:25gonna be I've been praying for this. This tells you the power of prayer.
- 28:30Daniel Snyder is leaving, He's selling the team. We are going to
- 28:34be in a much different position than we were previously. He has been a
- 28:38plague on the Redskins or is they're called the Commanders Now I still call them
- 28:44the Redskins all the time because I said that my whole wife. He's been
- 28:47a plague on this franchise ever since he took it over. I think we're
- 28:49gonna be in a much better position. We'll see what Riverboat Ron cooks up.
- 28:55And look, now, I mean the Cowboys, most overrated team in
- 28:59the NFL, have bank for decades, and it's just they're like the Notre
- 29:04Dame of the Okay, that's enough, all right, we got it.
- 29:07We got the point. All right. One serious question before I let you
- 29:10go. We'd have a text somebody says, my deceased mother has unclaimed property.
- 29:14How do I handle that? Yeah? Now that one you are going
- 29:17to want to call us on because there's gonna be some additional verification requirements in
- 29:21that. So go to our website and you will see a phone number that
- 29:25you can call there. There's WV Unclaimed Property dot Gov. That takes additional
- 29:30verification because you can claim those funds all right. Always pleasure having on the

- 33:05it. Hear me out. We're gonna call it as the Huggins Turns,
- 33:08where I'll bring you in every morning to update us on the latest in the
- 33:12saga former wvman's basketball coach Bob Huggins, except he doesn't want to be referred
- 33:16to as a former coach anymore. Joe Bracado's got that STORYWV Metro News dot
- 33:21com. What did yesterday bring us? Jeff Well, We a couple of
- 33:24things. One is that the Huggins attorney, David Campbell, they responded to
- 33:31the WVU response from Saturday. Remember they sent a letter on Friday. The
- 33:39Huggins camp sent a letter on Friday saying he did not resign, he's expecting
- 33:45his reinstatement. WV responded point by point on Saturday. Then Huggins's attorney,
- 33:52David Campbell sent back, you know, a letter yesterday in response to that
- 33:57saying, hey, you had a question. If I'm his attorney, i
- 34:00am his attorney, and let me reiterate this is why we we believe that
- 34:05he is still the coach. He did not resign. And so then WVU
- 34:08responded again saying he's not the coach and he's not going to be the coach,
- 34:15and here's here are the reasons why. Plus Bob Huggins himself. Whereas
- 34:21that says at the top of the statement, Robert E. Huggins media statement
- 34:27or a statement saying that you know, he's the basketball coach he fully expects
- 34:31to return that he's sorry for you know, you know or whatever. I
- 34:37don't have the wording right in front of me about what happened in Pittsburgh.
- 34:40He's checked himself into a world class rehabilitation center at which he will be completed
- 34:47soon, which he expects to help. What he says is the basketball program
- 34:52that is now in trouble, in troubable because of anyway. But anyway,
- 34:58but somebody pointed out me last night Jeff wanted by friends text me and said,
- 35:00what a way to throw everyone at the university under the bus. I
- 35:06mean, this happens to him and he just says, hey, they need
- 35:08me now. I mean, that's a little full of yourself there, coach.
- 35:12And he is one of the all time greats in the history of college
- 35:14basketball. I get that, but oh absolutely one of the best to ever
- 35:16do it, not only West Virginia but nationwide. But a little arrogant there,
- 35:22coach. So that so he put out the statement, and so he
- 35:24put out that statement too, So that all came yesterday. So now we'll
- 35:30see. Still the ball goes back into the hugs. Is David Campbell Now
- 35:34since WV said listen, let Stephanie Taylor their general counsel, pretty straightforward again
- 35:40in the letter, so you know, saying let me tell you again,
- 35:45let me make this clear. The resignation will not be revoked. He's not
- 35:51the basketball coach. So if you have any other proposals that we can talk
- 35:55about, let us know. So now we'll see if there's an answer from
- 36:00David Campbell to that, is he going to file a lawsuit and does this
- 36:05thing then get you know, legally tied up and we'll see what happens that
- 36:09you and I talked about this shaft? Is this about money in your opinion?
- 36:13I mean part of it part that's the big question. The big question
- 36:19is you would have to think the educated guess is yeah, some of it's
- 36:22about money, because usually all of these things are about money. But is
- 36:25it all about money? Or does coach Huggins people telling him does he really
- 36:34believe that he is as he says in the statement, still the coach,
- 36:38does he really does he really believe that and that that can actually happen?
- 36:45Um, you know, I mean all of this is possibility to be obviously
- 36:50legal, uh hashed out in some kind of lawsuit or you know, does
- 36:57it you know, WU says, you know, we're not change it.
- 37:00So if you've got another proposal, let us know what it is. Um
- 37:05So, do they have another proposal or do they continue to say do they
- 37:09triple down and say no, you know, we believe he is the coach.
- 37:14We're gonna fall suit and we're gonna we're actually fall suit. What about
- 37:17the charges on the DUI in Pittsburgh, because Pennsylvania's kind of got a little
- 37:21bit of Walkee. So that's a that's a that's new information that we were
- 37:23able to gather yesterday from the Allegheny County UH District Attorney in Pittsburgh. And
- 37:30so we knew about this early on after he was arrested. That we learned
- 37:35and we found out I think sometime last week maybe that that Pennsylvania does have
- 37:40a basically a pre trial diversion program. I mesk basically what it is that
- 37:45the state of Pennsylvania for first time offenders, and those people have texted me,
- 37:47well, he's not first time, Well he is considered first time in
- 37:51Pennsylvania because his DUI was more than ten years ago. That's first time and
- 37:54it was in Ohio. Um, so he is considered a first time offender.
- 37:59And so Pennsylvania has this program. If you're a first time DOUI offender,
- 38:07non violent DUI offender, which this was a non violent incident, then
- 38:10you the possibility is you can you can you can qualify and it's the DA
- 38:19who has to qualify you. You can qualify for this diversion program, which
- 38:22would basically end in charges being dismissed and the record being expunged, like it
- 38:28never happened, right right, excuse me, like it never happened. Uh.
- 38:30And so we knew that was a possibility. So I want to check
- 38:35with the DA. Yesterday they say, yes, he has been accepted.
- 38:37I mean we we says he we the office said that he has basically qualified
- 38:44for that or we have agreed to take him into that program. We think
- 38:47his case qualifies for that. So then they're they gave gave us. Uh,
- 38:52here are the five things that he'll have to do to have this happen,
- 38:58and kind of typical things that you would think. Uh, you know,
- 39:01he'll be in that program for six to twelve months. Basically probation kind
- 39:06of alcohol educationhol education, driving school, a fine, you know, fee
- 39:12you'll have to pay, community service. Yeah, just you know five or
- 39:16six things. There are five things I think in our store. If you
- 39:19read at wv Metro news dot com. And if he does that, then
- 39:22yeah, the record will be will be expunged. It'll be clear. He's
- 39:27scheduled to be back in Cortonock seventeen now he is. I think they're a
- 39:30different levels. So if your DUI, if your blood alcohol content is lower
- 39:36than you know, probably some of the things you have to do is not
- 39:39as much as others. They did point out the prosecutor's office there in Alleghany
- 39:45County, Pennsylvania did point out to me as I reached out and we were
- 39:49exchanging information, that this is similar to what others who would have that high
- 39:54of it. And they call this the highest level of this program because of
- 39:59his BAC point two one zero. Yeah. Uh, that that that this
- 40:02is similar to what they offer other people that our charge. It's not like
- 40:07he's getting a deal, O. No, I mean this is what they
- 40:08offer. That said they And they said it's mainly statutory, which means it's
- 40:13in law. Right, Yeah, yeah, it's you're a WU gad,
- 40:15Jeff, And I know I'll let you back to the newsroom, but do
- 40:17you're a WU guy? Did you ever think that it would end like this
- 40:21for one of, as I said earlier, not only the greatest coaches that
- 40:24West Virginia University has ever had on campus, but one of the great NC
- 40:28double A coaches of all time. Heading into this season with Beheim out,
- 40:32he was going to be the all time if I understand correctly, all time
- 40:36winning this active coach. Did you ever think it would end like this?
- 40:38I mean, I mean nothing, and I hate to give the old cliche
- 40:44nothing surprised, but nothing surprises you. I mean, it really doesn't.
- 40:47Uh. You know, Bob Huggins is a very successful coach, and there's
- 40:54a lot of power that goes with that, and you know, there's a
- 40:58lot of things. I mean, this is all he's done. Right.
- 41:00Cincinnati thing was messy, Dave, remember that when he left, that was
- 41:06a that was a messy type deal. So this is not it's not really
- 41:09kind of unlike that in a way, you know, because that ended in
- 41:14a messy way and he was able to take a year off come back to
- 41:15Kansas State, the w job opened up, and he came back. He
- 41:20came back to his alma mater um. So I don't know. I mean,
- 41:25it's these are powerful jobs, right, I mean, and when that
- 41:29comes though a lot of responsibility. And I keep hearing a lot of the
- 41:34WV faithful and others saying, well, you know, he among you who
- 41:37was not saying let you cast the first stone and whatever. I'm also not
- 41:40Bob Huggins, you know. And and there's a different like it or not
- 41:45when you are in the public eye, whether you're sports, whether you're a
- 41:46movie star, one of us, whatever, you have a different spotlight on
- 41:52you. And and that's just the and that's just the way it is.
- 41:54Well, a couple of that with the radio in exactly my next point.
- 41:59Yeah, I mean he was on ten ice anyway. Yes, they basically
- 42:01said at WVU, if you screw up one more time, they changed his
- 42:05contract and ex maybe to win your contract, right, and uh. And
- 42:10what he did on the radio Cincinnati was not a crime. This is a
- 42:14crime what he did in Pennsylvania. Jeff, I know, you gotta go.
- 42:16I appreciate it. I'll have you on again tomorrow. So for another
- 42:19it might be another it might be another letter. I mean maybe David Campbell,
- 42:22the Cleveland attorney may respond, Yeah, it's his balls in his court

- 45:30Want to get this in here. I just received a text during this show,
- 45:34and I don't know if his name means a whole lot to a lot
- 45:37of people, but if you're involved in the political circles here in the Canal
- 45:38Valley, this name certainly means something. Gentleman by the name of Paul Hartlington,
- 45:44who was a regular listener to the show, very involved in Republican politics
- 45:49in the state of West Virginia. I understand that Paul Hartling has passed away.
- 45:52Got a text from someone close to the family telling me that mister Hartling
- 45:57had been battling cancer for some time. I first met Paul Hartling when I
- 46:00moved to the Valley and got involved in some political things back in twenty fourteen,
- 46:06and he was a force to be reckoned with in politics and to say
- 46:08to West Virginia for sure. And as I said a regular listener to this
- 46:12show, he'd been ill for some time due to cancer. So our thoughts
- 46:15and prayers go out to the family of Paul Hartling on his passing. Going
- 46:19back to my comments about sports Texas, if sports pay the bills, then
- 46:22why is tutition going up an enrollment going down. Academic institutions will survive without
- 46:28sports. College sports won't survive if there isn't a college due to physical insolvency
- 46:32caused by low enroll. But well, a couple of points there. One
- 46:37of the reasons why tuition is going down is because more and more people are
- 46:39realizing that not everybody needs to go to college. And I talked about this
- 46:44on the show in the past. Is somebody who was a proud card carry
- 46:47member of Generation X, you know in the n eighteen eighties. I graduated
- 46:52high school in nineteen eighty eight. We were told you got to go to
- 46:54college, or you got to go to the military or whatever, and that
- 46:59simply wasn't the case. For a lot of people. As far as the
- 47:04textures point, I agree with it to a certain extent. However, again
- 47:07I'll use I'll use my personal experience. I was at Marshall University. I
- 47:12went to community college for two years, went to Marshall University for two years
- 47:15as well. I was at Marshall from nineteen ninety to nineteen ninety two.
- 47:19I was there when they built the Big Stadium. If you drive down Third
- 47:22Avenue or anywhere in Huntington for that matter, and you see all these wonderful
- 47:28buildings that are popping up, none of which was there when I was a
- 47:31student there in the nineteen nineties. A great deal of that is because of
- 47:36the success of the athletic programs at Marsha University, because of the Pennington Moss
- 47:40years and so on, and it's continued even beyond that. That's just where
- 47:45we are. I mean, people don't pay money, With all due respect
- 47:50to the academic world, people don't pay money to go to science fairs.
- 47:52They pay money to go see football teams and basketball teams. That's where we
- 47:57are day. Please don't make fun of the Huggins situation. This is a
- 48:02tragic issue. Thank you. I didn't didn't realize it was. But okay,
- 48:07Tech says Dave Huggins did the same thing that you see, he should
- 48:10not be given a chance to wipe away his DUI record. Well, that's
- 48:15the law in the state of Pennsylvania, as Jeff explained to us, And
- 48:19you may not like it, but that's the law and Huggins in this situation.
- 48:22And again Jeff was working the phones yesterday with the prosecutors in Allegheny County,
- 48:27which is where Pittsburgh is. That it's the law there, and so
- 48:32Huggins is not being treated any differently than anybody else would in Pennsylvania. Five

- 49:27Group. Jim has been off for a couple of weeks since the Levy has
- 49:30been on hiatus, but it's back Friday at had Ed Riverfront Park as Moses
- 49:34presents Live on the Levey. It's all on Friday, so just make just
- 49:38make notes of that. Godn't want to bring up something here real quick as
- 49:44we close out the show as it stands now, if the twenty twenty four
- 49:49presidential election or to be held tomorrow, we would be looking at another matchup
- 49:53featuring President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Now you know my thoughts
- 50:00on both. Four hundred million people in America, and the best we can
- 50:06do are a mumbling old man who doesn't know what planet he's on and a
- 50:09former president who won't admit that he lost the last election and was responsible for
- 50:14a ride at the Capitol. That's it. That's why we got, folks,
- 50:17and you've heard me complained about it. But I'm not alone. And
- 50:22if you need another poll to see what America thinks about it, last month,
- 50:29yet another poll was released which pretty much agrees with me, this one
- 50:32from The Economist and you gov. According to that poll, only thirty three
- 50:37percent of voters, regardless of party, want Trump to run again and twenty
- 50:44six percent want Joe Biden to run now again regardless of party, only thirty
- 50:49three percent of all overall voters want Trump to run and only twenty six percent
- 50:55of overall voters want Joe Biden to run back. In April, NBC's poll
- 51:01said seventy percent of Americans do not want Biden to run at seventy percent folks,
- 51:07and sixty percent don't want Donald Trump to run. And one of the
- 51:12major reasons that people don't want either to run. I mean, can forget
- 51:16the fact that Joe Biden's barely alive, that Donald Trump is corrupt. It
- 51:21has to do with their ages. Their combined ages is like five hundred and
- 51:25seventy three or something. We can do better. And I know that sounds
- 51:30agist, but when we're referring to a couple of people like Rhonda Santis and
- 51:34Nicky Haley, I'm just using them as an example. De Santus is forty
- 51:37four and Nicky Haley's fifty one. We're referring to them as being younger alternatives.
- 51:44At fifty one and forty four, both are younger than I am.
- 51:49We gotta, in my opinion, make some sort of a generational change in
- 51:52this country. We got, we got to, But all right, phone
- 51:57calls to five dye Live or service of Biggley Piggley wig and texting services provided
- 52:00by Fruth Pharmacy You're a hometown family Pharmacy didn't get to all the texts today.
- 52:05I apologize. I'll try to do better on the show tomorrow. Speaking
- 52:07of the show tomorrow. Coming up on the show tomorrow, more on the
- 52:09Huggins situation. Jim Workman of Wiley and Whippie Sports Digest is going to join
- 52:14us for that. Plus why is it we're gonna play amateur psychology? Just
- 52:16why is it that young people don't want to work? I got an author
- 52:21by the name of Kate Farmer who's a member of the Zoomer generation, and
- 52:24she's going to join us to talk about it. Dave Wilson and talk like
- 52:28coming up from our producer Hollywood, Jeff Penny, thank you so much to
