- 2:12Joe Manchin is going to be here tonight that the Conlin SEEMC convention. Senator
- 2:16is going to be a public meeting helped to discuss the proposed closure of the
- 2:20postal facility out in the South Ridge area. Senator Mansion and Senator Capitot,
- 2:23for that matter, have been watching that situation closely, and yesterday Senator Mansion
- 2:28reached out to me by coming on the show to talk about that. So
- 2:30we are going to get into that a little bit later on. Delegate and
- 2:34say Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin is going to be stopping by. Plus it
- 2:38is Valentine's Day, as I said, and Judge Mary Clair Akers is performing
- 2:44marathon weddings at the Knawk County Courthouse today. Now hopefully we're gonna check in
- 2:49with Judge Jacres about that. And I say hopefully because got a text from
- 2:52her. She has a sick young in as we say in southern West Virginia.
- 2:55So hopefully now the weddings are still going to go on, but they
- 2:59may be delayed a little bit, so hopefully talk to her about thirty minutes
- 3:02so ago. Hopefully she'll be able to call in an updateus there. Plus
- 3:05your calls and text are welcome. We are loaded up this morning. But
- 3:08I do want to welcome in our good friend from the campus of West Virginia
- 3:13State University, President Eric Cage. President Cage, good morning, welcome to
- 3:15the show, and happy Valentine's Day. Well, good morning, Dave,
- 3:17and happy Valentine's Day. It's great to be back with you again. You
- 3:21know, as I start to show everyone, I always take a big swig
- 3:23out of my Marshall coffee mug here because I'm a Marshall alum. Sure,
- 3:30but you know, a West Virginia State one would go very very well,
- 3:32just saying you know, we'll definitely make sure we get you a mud.
- 3:35They just just saying absolutely, I want do you want to do this at
- 3:38the top of the same one. I want to say on behalf of a
- 3:42lot of basketball fans here in the area. Last week, the Parmar Shootout
- 3:45was held on the campus of West Virginia State University, four days, thirty
- 3:49two games in all, eight third or nine thirty in the morning until eight
- 3:53thirty at night. What a great facility that you had there, and I
- 3:57just wanted to say, you know, I was there for much of it
- 4:00last week, from mister Burton to coach Poor to everyone. Just a great
- 4:05job in pulling all that off last week. So thanks a lot. Well,
- 4:09You're welcome, Dave. We are always excited to host our community on
- 4:14campus. Our athletic facilities are of course second to none, and certainly I
- 4:17agree with your kudos to our athletic staff, let by Nate Burden and certainly
- 4:23the rest of the team do it a very very good job of making sure
- 4:26that our facilities are open and that we're welcoming people. That's really who we
- 4:30are as an institution at West Virginia State. We are an intricral part of
- 4:33the community and we like to do our part to move the community forward.
- 4:39President Cames, there's some exciting stuff going on at State recently in the news,
- 4:42including the governor announcing fifty million dollars or so being allocated to put a
- 4:46new agricultural lab on campus and plus a new doctorate program is available at the
- 4:50state as well. Let's talk about this new lab first. Absolutely, No,
- 4:54West Virginia State definitely is a university that is on the move, Dave.
- 4:58We've got lots of exciting things happening at the institution. As you mentioned,
- 5:02Governor Justice during his State of the State address did announce a fifty million
- 5:09dollar proposal which would construct a new state of the art agriculture laboratory facility on
- 5:15the campus of West Virginia State University. And of course, since the session
- 5:19began in January, we have been up at the Legislature really working of the
- 5:26hallways, meeting with our members of the House of Delegacy and Senate, really
- 5:30underscoring the importance of getting this facility across the finish line. We view putting
- 5:36this facility on our campus as a win win for West Virginia because basically,
- 5:43what you will be doing is marrying the expertise that we have at West Virginia
- 5:46State University as a proud eighteen ninety land Grand institution that has engaged in agricultural
- 5:53research, education, and extension. You'll be marrying expertise with the expertise of
- 5:58the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, who will also be co located in the
- 6:00facility. Many of our gratists go on to work at the West Virginia Department
- 6:04of Agriculture, and we're already engaged in so many partnership with the Department of
- 6:10ag This is a synergy that really makes sense again, not just for West
- 6:15Virginia State, not just for the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, but for
- 6:17the citizens of West Virginia. Very exciting and we are very very optimistic about
- 6:24this proposal making across the finish line and becoming law. President Cage, I
- 6:29don't want to get ahead of ourselves here, but what kind of timeline are
- 6:31we looking at here? Do we have a timeline yet? Is it too
- 6:33early in the process to talk about that when the thing could be up and
- 6:35running. I think it's too early day. Right now, we are squarely
- 6:40focused on getting the appropriations across the finish line. Like I said, we're
- 6:44costly optimistic about where we are. We have had very productive conversations with members
- 6:49on both sides of the House and the House and the Senate, but at
- 6:54the end of the day, we know that this is not a done deal
- 6:58until that gabble falls at the end of the session, so our focus is
- 7:01on making sure the appropriation snippens and then we can sit down with all the
- 7:06partners involved in this to start talking about the additional planning. Dave Alan Chilling

- 7:25the doctorate program. Yeah, I mean, look, we can proudly say
- 7:30that after one hundred and thirty three years, West Virginia State University is now
- 7:34a doctoral granting eighteen ninety Land Grant institution and we have brought online our first
- 7:44doctorate, a Doctorate of Education in Leadership Studies. And Dave, it is
- 7:48very, very unique. It's unique in that it is a two year program
- 7:53that is designed for working professionals, completely online. It's a degree that although
- 7:59it is a doctor of education, it is not specifically limited to those in
- 8:03the education field. Because to focus is on leadership. So we want individuals,
- 8:07professionals from all walks of life who are looking to enhance their skills as
- 8:13leaders in their profession to be a part of this degree. Now, one
- 8:18of the things that I've said about this doctor's program is that because it is
- 8:22so unique, the customs a two year program, because this online, this
- 8:26is a program that will benefit not just the citizens of West Virginia, but
- 8:31frankly students across this country. We have received incredible interest already since we've gone
- 8:39live with the application process. We have folks who have expressed interests from as
- 8:41far off as California. This is West Virginia State University's first entry into executive
- 8:48education that is highly accessible and targeted towards workforce demands. And this is also
- 8:54a program I believe that's going to give West Virginia State University a national footprint.
- 9:00And you said something there that I love to hear when you say it
- 9:03is aimed or at least in part, toward workforce demands, because again,
- 9:07and my listeners have heard me talk about that over the years, it seems
- 9:11like that for so long in higher education, we just put people out there
- 9:16with degrees at all universities. But now the universities are doing a great job
- 9:22across the country, I think, especially West Virginia State, of listening to
- 9:24what the employers need, not only in this area, President Cage, but
- 9:28also, as you said, from a far as far away as California,
- 9:31absolutely you are spot on, Dave. And look, all of us in
- 9:35higher education have taken a step back. We understand that. Thirdly, post
- 9:41COVID nineteen, the world has changed. The higher education landscape has changed.
- 9:45Students and parents are demanding more from higher education. They're demanding higher education that's
- 9:50more flexible, that's more nimble, that's more affordable. And that's what we're
- 9:56doing at West Virginia State University. We're listening to what our customers in this
- 10:00case, our customers or our students, and we're adapting. We're making changes.
- 10:03We're investing in programs that meet current workforce needs, not because it's fashionable,
- 10:11but because it's what we need to do. It's the responsible thing to
- 10:15do. As the public institutions, we have to make sure that we are
- 10:18listening to what the public wants and that we're adapting ourselves, changing ourselves to
- 10:24be viable for the future. President Case before we let you go, and
- 10:28I want to keep on. I always try to end on a positive note.
- 10:30But there's one question that I did want to throw out at you.
- 10:33And we've heard a lot of this in the news, and I'll be honest
- 10:37with you, I don't completely understand the whole thing. Maybe you can help
- 10:39me understand about perhaps the government on a federal level not living up to some
- 10:45of the standards what's been required for an institution like WESTERNGINI you say to get
- 10:48by are we are we making some headway in that department? Well, I
- 10:52think you know, maybe you're talking about the under investment or the uninvestment in
- 11:00West Virginia State University. I know the Department of Education and Agriculture certainly put
- 11:03out a letter speaking to eight hundred million dollars and underfunding at West Virginia State
- 11:09and that's something that we take very seriously. We are not ignoring that.
- 11:13But what we are doing is we are working with our friends and our allies
- 11:18in the legislature, in the governor's office, and we're trying to come up
- 11:22with solutions that make sense, solutions that not only help to bring more resources
- 11:26to West Virginia State, but also clearly that meet workforce demand. So I
- 11:31am very optimistic about our ability to address those issues. And one thing I
- 11:37want to say day before we sign off is that look, on Thursday,
- 11:43we're going to have West Virginia State Day at the State Capitol, and we
- 11:46encourage everyone to come up and see the work that our faculty, staff,
- 11:52students and alumni are doing. It's our opportunity to express to our elected officials
- 11:56just how great of an impact that West Virginia State is making on the Mountain
- 12:00State. Let's close kind of following up with that, give me your elevator
- 12:05speech about West Virginia State University. Now, people around here in the Charlestity
- 12:09we all know about West Virginia State. But if you are somewhere, you're
- 12:11traveling, I know, being in education, you probably do a lot of
- 12:13traveling conferences and so on and so forth. Somebody, especially with these online
- 12:18programs, somebody reaches out to you and they will explain West Virginia State.
- 12:22What is your elevator speech? What is your selling point for West Virginia State
- 12:24President? Absolutely, what I say about West Virginia State University is our institution
- 12:28which has been around for one hundred and thirty three years is in the business
- 12:33of transforming lives. Our university has served as a pathway for prosperity and a
- 12:37beacon and hope of hope for thousands of students. We believe in meeting students
- 12:43where there are. We say fondly that it starts at State. Come to
- 12:46us with your ambition, Come to us with your desire to do hard work,

- 16:15producer. They want to go to the Canawk County Court House now, where
- 16:18Judge Mary Claire Acerus is standing by ready to marry up some people today for
- 16:22Valentine's Day. It's the annual King of Heart ceremonies. Judge, good morning,
- 16:26How are you? Good morning? How are you today? Dave?
- 16:29I'm doing fine. And I told the folks at top of the show we
- 16:30may or may not hear from you because you had a sick kid, but
- 16:33hopefully everything is working out there. Okay. We appreciate you taking time because
- 16:37it's a busy day for you and you add on the sick kid, and
- 16:41well, I hope everything's going okay. Everything worked out fine. She is
- 16:45at home and sleeping and hopefully comfortable for a little while. All right,
- 16:47that sounds good. All right, So we had you on the show last
- 16:49week to talk about this, the annual King of Hearts ceremonies. Are we
- 16:52on schedule? I mean I know you were run a little bit behind her.
- 16:56We are we ready to go here? I am running a little bit
- 16:59behind because I'll we've been at the doctor since about seven point thirty this morning.
- 17:03But that's what happens when you're working. Parents and everybody out there that
- 17:06is knows all about that. But when we get started, we will have
- 17:08two we have two scheduled adoptions first off, and then we have pen weddings
- 17:11set throughout the day. So we've got several set around eleven and around one
- 17:17o'clock. And that does not count the people out there who will hear my
- 17:19voice and decide today's the day, because we will accommodate a spontaneous people too.
- 17:26So last year we had probably five couples that came in and just decided
- 17:30to do it that day. And they are all because they heard us talking
- 17:33about it on the radio, right, that's right, all because they listen
- 17:36to you, Dave Allen. There you go. Promo material there, Ryan
- 17:38promo. All right. So we've got adoptions first, and then you said,
- 17:42we've had people that have called in. What do people need to do
- 17:48in order to get on the schedule today, Judge, All they have to
- 17:52do is go get a marriage license of Kinwaw County Clerk's office. But actually
- 17:57we will marry anybody with a valid marriage license from any county in West Virginia
- 18:02today. Just come in with a valid marriage license. Head on up to
- 18:06the fourth floor of the Kennall County Courthouse, which is at one one one
- 18:08Court Street. That's the Judicial Annex which is across the street from the Kennaugh
- 18:12County Courthouse. Those two buildings. Get confused a lot, and ring my
- 18:17door, my secretary Kim's doorbell, and we will get you fixed up and
- 18:21ready to go. And I want to know if we have any speak now
- 18:25or forever, hold your peace moments, because you and I talked about that
- 18:29last week. That may only happen in the movies, though we're people somebody.
- 18:30I mean, hopefully that doesn't happen, but if it does, because
- 18:33I like drama, I want to know about it, all right. I
- 18:36will tell you if that happens. I hope it doesn't, but no,
- 18:40I've never had it happen, but I might have it happen today just because
- 18:41you brought it up. I do want you to know that we are all
- 18:45decorated for the weddings as well. If anybody wants a festive backdrop, we
- 18:48had balloons by Birdie. Come in and do a backdrop for us last night,
- 18:52and it's really pretty. I'll drop it in the comments of the post
- 18:56that you put up about this. Okay, all right, very good,
- 18:57and be sure and sends any pictures you have, Just ask him if they
- 19:00mind if we publicize them, because I know that Jeff and the News Sea
- 19:03would also like to use them as well. And normally we send a newsperson
- 19:06down there to cover it. So carry or somebody may be down there a
- 19:08little bit later on today, give us before we let you go, because
- 19:11I know you're really busy. Give us for people that may not have heard
- 19:15it. The history behind this whole King of Hearts thing. This started actually
- 19:18Judge Charlie King, who was my predecessor and my mentor. We've talked about
- 19:22that a lot. He started this many many years ago, called it the
- 19:26King of Heart's Day, which is why I call it. That doesn't make
- 19:30sense because I'm female, but that's why it's after him. This is my
- 19:33third annual. I didn't correctly do the math last time I was there,
- 19:37Davis, So this is the third time that I've done this since I became
- 19:41a judge, and I'll do it every year that I am one. One
- 19:44thing that's important to remember, this is a public service. One thing I
- 19:48think people don't think about judges as public servants. I think just because of
- 19:52the position and what it means. But we are public servants and we are
- 19:56here to serve the public and on This is a way that I can do
- 19:59that, I can give back. I can be here and be present for
- 20:03anybody who wants to do it today. It's a free service. You do
- 20:06have to pay for the marriage license. I don't know what it is.
- 20:07I think it might be fifteen bucks. But otherwise you just come in and
- 20:11get married and head off and have a happy life. All right. We
- 20:14hope that's what happened. Judge Aacres, I appreciate you taking time on your
- 20:17schedule, and you'll be doing this toll how long today we will stop at
- 20:21five, stop at five o'clock, So between now and five o'clock, today's
- 20:23the day make the plunge, all right, Judge Mary Akers, I appreciate
- 20:27it. We'll talk again probably later today. Thanks a lot. All right,
- 20:30Thanks Dave. It is nine twenty seven the Dave Allen showing five Any

- 20:51of Winfield. Senator Joe Manchin is going to join this momentarily. Also a
- 20:53little bit later on the show, we've got House of Delegates member and the
- 20:57state Democratic Party Chair Mike Pushkin is going to be stopping by the studio as
- 21:02well. There were some texts that came in after the show yesterday, so
- 21:06let me that happens sometimes, So let me knock out a couple of those
- 21:08texts from yesterday and then we'll go to Senator Mansion when we get him on
- 21:11the line. Tex says this one was actually ined for Chris Walters, who
- 21:15was in the studio yesterday. Chris, of course, is a Republican candidate
- 21:18for County Commission and he was talking about the response to some flooding issues that
- 21:25had happened over the last couple of years in Kanaw County and someone threw this
- 21:27out there and wanted us to mention this, says Chris. The city of
- 21:30Charleston actually shared labor, backos and trucks to Clintennon after the flood, even
- 21:36donated a free dump truck, says a texture that again in reference to the
- 21:41interview I did with Chris Walter's Republican Canada for County commission on On on yesterday's
- 21:48show, Let Me See tex says this is in reference yesterday's show, just

- 22:29says a Texter. Going back to my comments from yesterday when I was
- 22:33talking about in Conway, South Carolina. Over the weekend, former President Trump
- 22:38was talking about his Republican opponent, Nikki Haley's husband not being part of her
- 22:45campaign trail. He of course, is deployed. In my opinion, yet
- 22:48another example of the former president disrespecting veterans and people that deserve that's my opinion.

- 23:26The Republican supermajority are very good at talking ad nauseum about hot button issues to
- 23:33distract from their failure to address actual problems such as jail crowding, failing infrastructure,
- 23:38public school underperformance, the public school underperformance, I should say, opioid
- 23:44crisis, et cetera, etc. There are a lot of people that say
- 23:48even Republicans I talk to you that say that maybe the Republican Party does spend
- 23:52a little bit too much time on the on the social issues. I would
- 23:56be one of those people. There's going to be a big event happening this

- 29:57for some time, and there was a actually last night there was a demonstration
- 30:03and informational picket, if you will, held at the Charleston Post Office to
- 30:06get information out to people. I think we have Senator Mansion with us now.
- 30:10Senator, good morning, good morning, thank you, I think David,
- 30:14yes it is. It is. Welcome to the show show how you
- 30:15doing? I'm doing five and you are one live on the air last night.
- 30:19Right now I should say, great, David, how are you all
- 30:22going? I'm back home. Everything is, everything's going fine here. I
- 30:26was just kind of talking about this situation, Uh, with the postal facility.
- 30:30The news came to light Senator several months ago that these jobs could be
- 30:34transferred out of here. Last night there was that rally held to oppose the
- 30:37shutdown to night of public meeting six thirty at the Coliseum and Convention Center.
- 30:41Uh, talk about what you know about this situation, sir, Well,
- 30:45you know this goes way back to the last election. Remember to mail in
- 30:48all the problems we're having processing the mail and the mail in votes and things
- 30:51of that. So what we were worried about, and he took some of
- 30:52the equipment offline, and we went up there and got that back straightened out,
- 30:56and we thought we were in good shape. And then all of a
- 30:59sudden, we hear about this a few months ago and I call Postmaster de
- 31:02Joy went over in detail with him. He called me back and we got
- 31:06into it and talked about different things, and he said, Joe, we're
- 31:10going to invest more money, thirty to forty million dollars more up to upgrade
- 31:14the system there. And the postal workers made a point in their there,
- 31:22it's very helpful of what they're concerned about. It's not that they're worried about
- 31:26losing their job. They're worried about being transferred to places they can afford to
- 31:30go, and then what takes them away from home, that's what we're worried
- 31:33about. That means that they change the services that are offered there versus the
- 31:37sourcing and and all this and that. So anyway, we're very very much
- 31:42on top of that. We want that to be one of the premiere areas
- 31:48as far as serving rural America. We don't only serve Virginia. That serves
- 31:52into Ohio and into Kentucky and so many other rural parts of our country here
- 31:57where that's out of Charleston. So we're fighting for that. We will continue
- 32:01to fight for that, and there's a meeting tonight. I'm still in DC
- 32:07working here, but my staff will be there and we're going to hold them
- 32:09accountable and responsible for this and the joy to show that basically the quality of
- 32:15work we do, the way we're able to do it, with the proper
- 32:16upgrades, we can even do much more and much better and much more efficient.
- 32:22Right now, they're all looking at cost and I can appreciate anything that
- 32:25in government, they looked at the cost of things, costing how we can
- 32:30be more effective and efficient by closing down areas and going to areas and that
- 32:35aren't performing. Perfect example, if they move that to Pittsburgh and that's going
- 32:39to be their main central Pittsburgh's not doing the job anywhere near to efficiencies of
- 32:44what we do it. So we're going to make sure we hold them accountable.
- 32:46Decision we made on the facts of who's performing and who's not, and
- 32:51the expansion should be done along those lines. So that's what we're really fighting
- 32:53for and what they're making they're aware of. Says, oh yeah, they
- 32:57said they're not going to lay anybody off. Probably won't. If they don't
- 33:00lay anybody off, they're going to make me go two hours here to relocate
- 33:05here and there. That's not what we're talking about, and that's not what
- 33:07we're going to accept. So we're fighting, like the difference buddy, to
- 33:09make sure that doesn't happen. And again we're talking with Senator Joe Manchin.
- 33:15The union representing the workers, mister Holstein among them, has been interviewed several
- 33:19times and they've called out, Sir, the Postal Service for scheduling this meeting
- 33:22tonight at the coliseum. And when it is Valentine's Night, a lot of
- 33:24people will be out on the town. Of course, you know it's West
- 33:29Virginia, Siry. You know a lot of people will do church on Wednesday
- 33:30night. I am told the Coloseum a convention center was available both last night
- 33:36and Monday night if they would have wanted to have it. Then the Postal
- 33:38Service chose not to have that meeting at that time, opting to keep opting
- 33:43to keep it tonight. Some of the said because they don't want people to
- 33:46show up. But we're trying to get the word out about this, so
- 33:50hopefully some people will show up tonight, sir, well, not only will
- 33:53the people show up, but let me just tell you one thing. We
- 33:57are on it. My entire staff is on this thing. So even if
- 34:00they didn't didn't have the crowd that we want tonight, they're going to hear
- 34:06them. We're speaking on behalf of these of the good workers. And also
- 34:10that's a wonderful facility up there, and for them to commit, they're going
- 34:15to invest the money that has to have value for the postal service. What
- 34:21we're saying is, let's improve what we're doing now and make it even better
- 34:24and more effective and efficient. That's what we can do because we've shown even
- 34:29with what we have to work with, we're out performing the centers they call
- 34:32supercenters. So that's what we're fighting for. So I can assure you their
- 34:37voices will be heard. If they're there, we'd love for them to show
- 34:39the strength of being there, the support that we have and my staff will
- 34:44all be there, so they're going to hear from this Loudenclayer, don't worry
- 34:46about that, all right, Senator. Before we let you go, I
- 34:50did want to bring this up. It is Valentine's Day, I got to
- 34:52ask you, how is your Valentine Gaale doing following her little accident in Alabama.
- 34:55Couple of David, thank you so much. She's doing doing well.
- 35:00Gil's she's bruised up. It was just a miracle. I mean, the
- 35:02Good Lord was watching over her and that she got t boned and she was
- 35:07riding in a car and she was going to her work of Applack's and Regional
- 35:09Commission. They were going to have a work study, a work study group
- 35:14in Birmingham, Alabama. She landed. It was about four o'clock her time,
- 35:17five o'clock our time, and she calls me, she says, She
- 35:22says, honey, I don't want you to worry. I've been a pretty
- 35:25pretty tough accident here, but I'm okay. And I said, well,
- 35:29where are you, Gail? She says, well, they've got me strapped
- 35:31to a gurney put me in an ambulance. I'm thinking, oh, yeah,
- 35:34you're really okay. That's what you want to hear when you're a thousand
- 35:37miles away. That's exactly. So I took off and went down there,
- 35:39and God bless her, but they really took good care. They went through
- 35:44the University of Alabama medical centers, just like our wy medical centers in Birmingham.
- 35:49They went through everything, did a fantastic job, and she was released
- 35:52and we got her home and she's healing up and she's bruised up. But
- 35:57thank god, if he'd hit five three feet up on her door, you
- 36:00know, I got t boned by. It was a high speed police chase.
- 36:05Heard we were chasing the criminal. They were chasing the criminal for the
- 36:08streets of Birmingham and the guy just ran to the light and hit him and
- 36:12hit right behind her door. She was sitting in the front seat. Did
- 36:15hit her door. Lord knows, we might not have her with us today,
- 36:17but it was just a miracle and to get a little watched over her.
- 36:21And I'm very thankful. Thank you for all the good wishes. Dave.
- 36:22Let me see a couple of things. What happened, What you're seeing
- 36:27happening in Washington is just not This is not who we are as a country.
- 36:30We have a chance to fix the border. The border is the most
- 36:34serious thing that we have right now. It's the greatest crisis we're facing.
- 36:38And to have a piece of legislation which was negotiated by one of the most
- 36:42conservative Republicans, a good man James Langford from Oklahoma, and have a bill
- 36:46that basically finally stopped catching release, It stopped basically parole to border. It
- 36:53hired eighteen hundred I mean twenty seven hundred more agents to make sure that we
- 36:58could adjudicate and when people come to the border trying to get in, they
- 37:00don't go any further than there. We turn them around quick, we get
- 37:05them back out of there because they don't belong in our country, they don't
- 37:07qualify, and we can control that. Now I've told people are going to
- 37:10blame Joe Biden. He's absolutely guilty as charged. He's allowed this to happen
- 37:15and it's gotten out of hand. He can said that he did it for
- 37:17humanitary reasons because the world was hurting after the pandemic and they thought they were
- 37:22doing the right thing, which turned out to be horribly wrong. But now
- 37:27everyone's willing to fix it, and politics raise its ugly head, and we
- 37:30couldn't get it passed the other day and we've got to secure our borders.
- 37:36But we did pass last night yesterdayday morning with seventy votes, Democrats and Republicans
- 37:42working together, the Aid for Ukraine, which they have to have, and
- 37:47Ukraine is doing a tremendous job of holding back Russia, and I believe in
- 37:52all my heart they can defeat Russia from this aggression. But with that,
- 37:55it's also for Israel and a horrible attack on Israel, and then humanitarian aid
- 38:04for those who are suffering so badly with that war. So there's an awful
- 38:07lot of good done in that, but we have got to secure the borders,
- 38:09and politics cannot be playing this dangerous, horrific games, putting politics in
- 38:15the party above what's needed for our country. All right, well, said
- 38:20Senator Manchin. I appreciate you taking time at your schedule to be here and
- 38:22we'll talk again soon. Thanks a lot, Thanks David, It happy Valentine,
- 38:28Happy Valentine's Day at all? All right? Thank you? Ninety five
- 38:31Stay Democratic Party Charon Deligate. Mike Pushkin is here. Good morning, sir,
- 38:35how are you? Good morning and happy Valentine's Day day. So you
- 38:38text me yesterday and ask if the text was can I come on the show?
- 38:43I ask when? And you said now, and that was like one
- 38:45thirty yesterday afternoon, So I am going to say I missed you. Then
- 38:50I'm glad to see you on Valentine's Day, and I apologize I didn't bring
- 38:52you a heart shaped box of chocolates. Don't bring me anything but that let's
- 38:59meet. Leave delegate State Democratic Party Chair that you were a little upset about
- 39:04something. I know you, man, I've known you for four years.
- 39:07I know I know when you're upset during session there's a lot to be upset
- 39:09about. But this time, this time, you got it wrong. I
- 39:15had a built Yesterday was the last day to introduce bills. There were two
- 39:20bills that I introduced yesterday, just you know, on the last day,
- 39:22and in one trying very hard to get it on with single reference in the
- 39:28House, which is a good sign I still have time to get it passed.
- 39:30I think it's a bill that has bipartisan support, and it's a building.
- 39:34You would think that it should already be in code. But it is
- 39:37in response to what happened over in my neighborhood on the West Side back in
- 39:42October with the gas outage caused by the water leak. And it would simply
- 39:47require public utilities to have a notice public notice system, you know, in
- 39:53place that they can contact the rate payers when there is a planned outage or
- 40:01an accident, whatever it may be. It's something you would think that that
- 40:07would already be the law. Apparently it was not. Because we weren't notified
- 40:10of our gas being out that morning. People just knew that their houses were
- 40:14cold. So that bill was introduced. It was single reference to the House
- 40:19Committee on Technology and Infrastructure. And the good news is there's bipartisan support for
- 40:23it. The Speaker has said that he likes the bill, that the committee
- 40:28chair who's been on this show many times. I believe that Chairman Lynbull,
- 40:32he has expressed support for it. So hopefully we get the bill run and
- 40:36we get it through the House and through the Senate and to get it on
- 40:37the governor's desk. I think it's a bill that'll protect the rate payers out
- 40:43here and people who were just paying their utility bills and deserve to have better
- 40:47communication with their utilities. What about some of the other things that's going on
- 40:52this session, it's been a little contentious. I mean, as I know
- 40:54you folks on your side have been upset about several things. You've been a
- 40:58little infighting between the party in power, which is common. Uh So,
- 41:01where are you on some of these hot button the rest of the time,
- 41:05I think that there are too many hot button issues. I think there are
- 41:07a lot of issues that we should be working on that that we're that we're
- 41:12ignoring. I could go on and on. I'm gonna start with the foster
- 41:15care crisis. Eight thousand children in state custody and there hasn't been anything done
- 41:21this session to address those issues, whether it's the staffing at Child Protective Services
- 41:25or simply providing services to families so they don't find themselves in that situation to
- 41:30begin with, that should be front center. You know, not enough teachers
- 41:34in the classroom specifically and especially teaching aids in special education classrooms that that situation
- 41:42is at a crisis level right now. Also, of course, are our
- 41:45jails and our prisons, the understaffing theirs we have. We have staffing issues
- 41:49all across the board and state government. We're not doing nearly enough to address
- 41:52that. There was a proposed pay raise, pay raise billsers as right now
- 41:55are not moving and nothing to offset this p i A increased from last year.
- 42:01Nothing to address our our retired state workers and the cost of living.
- 42:07Just there as a lot of things we could be doing we should be doing.
- 42:09But instead of doing what we should be doing, the Republican supermajority tends
- 42:14to focus on just things that they want to do because it's an election year,
- 42:16and that's you know, the divisive, hot button culture war type issues
- 42:21that I personally just don't have any patients for. Go locking up librarians.
- 42:25Yeah, I don't think that's u we should be focused on. You know,
- 42:30they bought this battle in Kanall County fifty years ago, years ago this
- 42:35year actually, right, yeah, fifty years ago exactly, and it was
- 42:38wrong then, it's it's wrong now. I think I believe in freedom of
- 42:43thought and expression, and and I think that you know, parents should also
- 42:45be more and more involved in what their children read or don't read. Hopefully
- 42:50they're they're reading period. But no, I don't believe in locking up librarians
- 42:54for contents of a book. Well, wrong headed bill, it's not the
- 42:58way to go. A strong opposed that bill. But talk about all the
- 43:01bills I pose, there are plenty of them. But the good news is
- 43:04we got a bill that's actually gonna protect consumers. It's gonna protect the rate
- 43:09payers for these utilities, and hopefully we can get that bill moving, get
- 43:14it on the agenda and get bipartisan support for it. Today, Alan showing
- 43:16five any line has brought to you part by Brightway Insurance, amazing agency of

- 46:39up librarians but support a sexual harassment person on the presidential ballot. Something is
- 46:45wrong here. Talk about the women's Bill of rights that's been uh I knew
- 46:50i'd get you going at some point, all right, So so go ahead,
- 46:52just you can talk it at your show. We'll talk about whatever you
- 46:54want. Women's Bill of Rights first of all, does absolutely nothing for women.
- 46:58It's not a bill of rights. I wanted to call it a bill
- 47:01of wrongs, but I got overruled by my caucus they yeah, but it
- 47:07is wrong and it it it's basically just a bill that it's an electioneer bill.
- 47:13It creates this you know, perceived threat, and it's a distraction to
- 47:17the real issues that the Republicans supermajority just isn't addressing, not addressing right now.
- 47:24But the what we tried to do it led by uh, you know,
- 47:28one of the hardest working, smartest delegates up there, Kayla Young and
- 47:31and one of our newest delegates who has done a just hit the ground running
- 47:35a Nietzsra Hamilton. Uh. They introduced a strike and Insert amendment to this
- 47:39that actually would have created a real women's bill of rights. It addressed childcare
- 47:45issues, you know, it addressed equal Pay Act that it added the Equal
- 47:50Pay Act and equal pay for women doing the same job as their male counterparts.
- 47:52They should be getting paid the same. Uh. It had health freedom
- 47:57innutes said adults should be able to make health care decisions for themselves, period,
- 48:00all health care decisions. There was a lot of really good stuff in
- 48:04that in that bill, in the strike and Insert amendment. Of course,
- 48:07the Republicans voted down a long party lines, but the one element of that
- 48:13amendment that did make it into the bill is something that we should have addressed
- 48:15a long time ago. And there's this archaic language in the criminal Code that
- 48:21exempts exempts people in a marriage from being charged with sexual saw. So if
- 48:29your victim is your wife, then you can't be charged with sexual assault.
- 48:31I think everybody would agree that that is I would think everybody would agree that
- 48:35that is wrong. It's archaic language left over from the from the eighteen hundreds,
- 48:40but that's in code, and that did make it into the bill to
- 48:44remove that archaic exemption. And because of that, unfortunately, some of the
- 48:49Republicans had a hard time voting for removing that exemption, and the bill was
- 48:52parked on the House calendar. But I'm hearing that it's going to rear its
- 48:55ugly head again today on Valentine's Day, of all time days. Yeah,
- 49:00they're gonna pull that bill off the calendar, off the House calendar and put
- 49:04it on the special calendar, which means it'll probably be voted on. From
- 49:07from what I'm hearing, it will be voted on this morning in the in
- 49:12the House of Delegates. So and I will be voting no because it's a
- 49:16what that's the rest of the bill, it's just basically a bill that Uh
- 49:21it's a it's a it's just an anti trans bill. I don't I'm not
- 49:23running. I didn't go up there to pick on people. And that's all
- 49:27it does. It just picks on people. It creates a uh, perceived
- 49:30threat and and it actually what the the real harm that the bill does is
- 49:35that it's it's almost like straight out of George Orwell book. In the definitions
- 49:38it says equal does not mean the same. Well, that applies across the
- 49:43board to state code, including the Human Rights Act. So that could do
- 49:45some real damage if you're saying equal no longer means the same, equal is
- 49:50the same. And uh, it's the bill's got a lot of problems.
- 49:52There's absolutely no need for it, and it's just more ugly election year red
- 49:58meat type bills aimed to get people upset with each other and cause division and
- 50:02distract them from the real issues. Man. But Dave alan Jo on five

- 50:23period is over, you haven't been on since then. How have you done,
- 50:27how's the party done? And getting people in these positions to run for
- 50:30We have a lot of great candidates across the board. We had a lot
- 50:32of people step up, and we're gonna be right there with our candidates every
- 50:37step of the way. It's very difficult to recruit, you know, when
- 50:40you're the party that's out of power, and in a lot of these gerrymander
- 50:45districts, you know, people are starting off thirty or forty points behind before
- 50:47they even put their name on the ballot. So it's very difficult to recruit.
- 50:51But in spite of that, we were able to find some great candidates
- 50:53in many parts of the state, and I think we're going to surprise a
- 50:58few folks here in Kanaan County. We actually have two Democrats running for county
- 51:00Commission. Now there's a primary on the Democratic side and the primary on the
- 51:05Republican side, and people deserve choices and the democracy works better when people have
- 51:10choices, that's for sure. So what else are you looking at over the
- 51:14next I know you said that there could be some things popping up. Today,
- 51:15we're over the halfway point. Now, what would you on Mike Pushkin's
- 51:20wish list give me about a minute or so, what you'd like to see
- 51:22done for the rest of the session. Well, I think we need to
- 51:23address the childcare issue. There are a lot of people don't just can't,
- 51:29not that they just can't afford it, but also there's no access to it
- 51:30in their areas. And we see childcare agencies shutting down across the state because
- 51:36of the way that they reimburse them. It's whether it's based on attendance or
- 51:40enrollment. Should be based on enrollment. You know, toddlers often come,
- 51:45you know, they get sick, or they go on vacation with their family
- 51:46or whatever. You can't do it based on attendance. Had the reimbursement has
- 51:51to be based on enrollment. That seems like it should be an easy bipartisan
- 51:53bill. For some reason, Republicans are holding that bill up. But we
- 51:57have a childcare crisis in this state. We have a faught stick care crisis
- 52:00in the state. We need to do we can to expand the amount of
- 52:02placement we have for these kids so they're not being dumped off at hotels or
- 52:07motels or state parks even across the state. Here's the music playing. There's
- 52:10a whole lot of issues we need to be Unfortunately, Republicans are just doing
- 52:15what they want, and that means they're running bills to weaken childhood immunization laws.
- 52:17I think that's a big mistake. Raw milk is coming back. There's
- 52:21a raw milk bill moving to allow for the sale of it that I don't
- 52:24have as much of a problem with. The problem I have is there's blanket
- 52:27immunity from a liability for any sellers or of raw milk. So I've never
- 52:32heard of any other food product that they feel deserves this blanket immunity. Can't
- 52:37get sued for it. Lots so safe. Why are they protecting it like
- 52:40that? Lot too unpacked? Here delegated state. Never to day Dalla children
