- 0:00Hello everyone and welcome back to Kenny.
- 0:02Conversation brought to you by Jags, the leader in high
- 0:07performance aftermarket car parts.
- 0:10Remember to go to jags.com for anything you need to fix your
- 0:15everyday vehicle up or even that hot rod that you have.
- 0:19You're looking at him one of the greatest chassis builders of all
- 0:24time and and I don't use the word great lightly, the great
- 0:28Bob Harris. Bob, how you doing?
- 0:31I'm doing good, Kenny. Everything's been good.
- 0:34Can't complain whatsoever. It's a beautiful day today.
- 0:40T-shirt weather wasn't raining finally, so life's good.
- 0:45You know, I want to brag on you for a little bit and I want the
- 0:48audience to know this. You know, I'm 62 in August and
- 0:54you're getting up there too. You are up to date with
- 0:57technology. And I just think that's awesome.
- 0:59I mean, you logged right on and you got right on Kenny
- 1:03conversation. Usually we got to tell everybody
- 1:07what to do. But man, you are really up with
- 1:09technology and we're going to talk about that.
- 1:13But how'd you how'd you learn all the technology?
- 1:16Did you did you just stay up? Just tried trying to keep up
- 1:20with it, you know, Of course, Chad Weirs and I do a show every
- 1:26other week. It's called Speed Tips with Bob
- 1:28and Chad. So I've learned quite a bit with
- 1:31that and I just like keeping up with stuff.
- 1:35Yeah, you're really good at it, and that's why you're
- 1:37successful. All right, let's talk about this
- 1:40first and then I want to talk about you.
- 1:44The Harris Clash. This legendary race that you put
- 1:47on is coming up June 24th at Boone, IA.
- 1:51I'm just going to let you go. I don't want to tell everybody
- 1:54everything, but tell me about this legendary Harris Clash.
- 1:58Well, it's a race that, you know, we started back in 1992.
- 2:03It was just a race basically to reward the, the fans or the, the
- 2:10racers that had won races at specific race tracks.
- 2:14Well, then as we evolved, you know, we started taking it to
- 2:18different places and then we ended up going to Knoxville and
- 2:22we raced at Knoxville quite a quite a bit.
- 2:24And now it's kind of a neat deal because it was an open deal.
- 2:27Nobody raced Knoxville, so there wasn't a local favorite or
- 2:30anything like that. So that worked out really well
- 2:33and we had a lot of fun there. And it's just evolved since
- 2:38then. We've been doing it for 34
- 2:39years. We've been at Deer Creek the
- 2:43last few years. That racetrack is an awesome
- 2:48facility. I mean, it's, it's just a great
- 2:50deal. But we got to the point where we
- 2:52kind of needed to move it back to Iowa, get it more in, in the
- 2:57heartbeat of IMCA World and Boone Speedway.
- 3:01I mean, there's, I don't know, there's a lot of racers and a
- 3:06lot of fans within 100 miles of Boone Speedway.
- 3:09Boy, it really is. Boone is so legendary.
- 3:12All those race tracks you just said, but but Boone is the one.
- 3:16I mean, to me, that's a modified IMCA Capital of the world.
- 3:20It seems like. I want to brag on you and I want
- 3:23you to talk about this. The Harris Clash is 34 years old
- 3:28and it is the oldest one day event in racing.
- 3:34That's incredible. How have you been able to keep
- 3:36this event going so long, so strong?
- 3:40You know, it's just, it's something that I've had in my
- 3:42heart. It's something that you know, we
- 3:46put on for the racers. You know, it's a situation where
- 3:50we try to put together and get enough sponsors and enough
- 3:53support that these guys can come run a one day show and get paid
- 3:59a lot, a a pretty good chunk of money.
- 4:01And the racers have supported this deal all along.
- 4:06I mean, it's it's been it's been wonderful.
- 4:08And once again, like I said, you know, we get them in there, we
- 4:12get them out of there. You know, a lot of these big
- 4:14paying shows are two day deal. Well, that's an expense to the
- 4:17racer, You know, and, and I just these guys got enough expenses,
- 4:23we got to figure out ways to cut some of their expenses.
- 4:26And so keeping it a one day show, I think it's been part of
- 4:29the success. It sure is nice to hear somebody
- 4:33that knows about the sport, understand it and then implement
- 4:37it. You know, we hear a lot of
- 4:38promoters talk about the expenses, but to actually
- 4:43implement it like you are, I want to thank you for keeping it
- 4:46in a one day event, making it a legendary race.
- 4:50So I told my dear friend and yours, Kenny Schrader.
- 4:55I said Schrader, I'm going to have a Kenny conversation with
- 4:58Bob Harris. And to this day, Kenny Schrader
- 5:02is a NASCAR great. He he's ran Daytona, he's ran
- 5:07the Darlington Southern 501 of his favorite races.
- 5:11Is that Harris clash? Can you tell me some of your
- 5:14memories with Kenny Schrader Racing in your Harris clash?
- 5:19Well, he, he, he, he ran a lot of the races at Knoxville and,
- 5:25and, and the one I mean, we had, we had a good car for him.
- 5:30You know, the car was pretty new and, and, and it was just it, it
- 5:34was just good. And so we went to Knoxville and
- 5:39he qualified goods. So he started, I think he
- 5:42started like third row and didn't take him long to get in
- 5:46the lead and he led that thing till the white flag lap.
- 5:51They put the white flag out. He went down into Turn 1 and
- 5:56broke the pan art bar and got him up in the in the marbles.
- 6:00And that was such a sad situation because he was going
- 6:04to win the Harris Flash. Yeah.
- 6:06So he was kind of bummed about that.
- 6:09And he still is. He told me he told me on he told
- 6:12me a little bit of goat that he he is bummed out about that.
- 6:15It is it is amazing that NASCAR drivers, you know, they they
- 6:20race at the highest form and Kenny Schrader's won a truck
- 6:23race, an Xfinity race, a cup race and here, here the one that
- 6:29haunts him is that Harris clash at at that legendary Knoxville.
- 6:34So everybody listen up. Remember, just a reminder here,
- 6:38it's coming up June 24th, the Harris clash at Boone, IA.
- 6:43It's a one day event and tell me some of your highlights, some of
- 6:48your memories. Who's the winners?
- 6:50What finishes stick out to you besides the Kenny Schrader
- 6:54stuff? Well, you know, Kelly Shireck
- 6:57won it twice, you know, and, and, and both times when he was
- 7:01when he won it, he was working for me.
- 7:03So that was pretty cool. Kyle Stricker won it
- 7:07back-to-back and and that was pretty neat.
- 7:10We've just had a lot of great winners, but nobody has ever won
- 7:15that race three times. Wow, in 34 years, nobody's won
- 7:20it three times. We've got some two time winners,
- 7:22but you know, Tom Berry and Cam Rhymers were were two time
- 7:28winners last year at at Deer Creek.
- 7:33So I mean it's just it's it's not over until it's over.
- 7:37I mean, it's just an awesome race.
- 7:40And this year we've added stock cars besides the sport mods.
- 7:44So that's going to be a pretty cool deal.
- 7:46We're going to change the format up a little bit.
- 7:48We're going to run the stock cars first.
- 7:51They'll be first in the order and then the sport mods and then
- 7:55the modifieds. And from what my experience have
- 7:57been by watching races at Boone, the stock cars, when the
- 8:02racetrack gets kind of wore in a little bit, they tend to be a
- 8:06little more bottom features. And so then the show's not, you
- 8:10know, I mean, it's still a good show, but it's kind of a bumper
- 8:14car type deal. So I want to run them first so
- 8:18that they will have a top and a bottom and be able to put on a
- 8:22good races, you know, good races for the fans and good races for
- 8:25the competitors. The sport mods, they're pretty
- 8:29capable of running top and bottom no matter what the
- 8:32conditions are. And, and the modifieds, of
- 8:35course, they can run anywhere. I mean, the last weekend it was
- 8:40an awesome show. I I tell you what, they, they,
- 8:44they've really done a great job with the racetrack this year
- 8:48and, and the racing's just been phenomenal.
- 8:51Yeah. All right, everybody, once
- 8:53again, June 24th, Boone, IA, the hairs clash.
- 8:56And I will say this about Boone. They got the best track prep in
- 9:00the world, man. They can, they can get it done
- 9:04in a heartbeat. So you're never, ever at Boone
- 9:06going to run on a rub it up track.
- 9:08And I think that goes a long way for such a big event.
- 9:12OK, Bob, it's time for us to take a deep breath and I want to
- 9:15celebrate you. Let's change subjects.
- 9:20OK. You are world known for Harris
- 9:24race cars, you know, years not years ago, but a little bit ago,
- 9:28you know, you, you built framing cages, you built race cars and
- 9:33those things would win everywhere all the time.
- 9:37Tell me and and your fans out there what is happened to the
- 9:43Harris race cars and what you're up to now.
- 9:47Well, you know, the we started building race cars probably.
- 9:54Well, I started business in 1980 when they quit racing.
- 9:59I raced for three years and kind of come to the conclusion every
- 10:03time I put a driver in my car, we did better.
- 10:06So it didn't take too much. It didn't take too long for me
- 10:09to figure out I was making more money paying the driver than I
- 10:12was doing it myself. And so then I started in
- 10:16business and we started doing sheet metal and stuff like that.
- 10:19Well, then we got into building race cars and I think we build
- 10:23our first modified in 1986. And you know, we just, I just
- 10:30enjoy it. I enjoyed building them and, and
- 10:33I really enjoyed it. It was just one of those
- 10:36situations where time had went on and, and, and a guy offered
- 10:41me a situation that that where I could go to work for him and he
- 10:46would own the company and, and it was a pretty good deal.
- 10:50So I chose to do that. And then that kind of worked out
- 10:56sort of OK, not exactly like it. You know, it's just like
- 10:59everything when you're used to running the company and then
- 11:04somebody else is running the company, you know it it.
- 11:08You're going to butt heads. You have different ideas.
- 11:11You know, you, you, you and, and it's not their fault.
- 11:14I mean, a lot of it was my fault because I'm just used to doing
- 11:17things a certain way. And so then I kind of got out of
- 11:22it. Well, then we decided to get
- 11:24back into it. And actually Joe Garrison, who's
- 11:27a good friend of mine, he, his product was very similar to mine
- 11:32and his theories were very similar to mine.
- 11:35And so him and I got together and we started selling Joe's
- 11:39cars, the TRT cars, and that was real successful.
- 11:43You know, nothing big. I mean, when I owned Hair Solder
- 11:47Racing, we were building 120 cars a year and, and now, you
- 11:53know, we do probably somewhere between 15 and 20 and it's just
- 11:58a lot more, a lot scaled back. I, I had at one time I had 22
- 12:03employees and, and now I have 7. And, and so, and, and then we
- 12:09got into the shock business and the shock business is really
- 12:12good. My son Bobby takes care of that
- 12:14pretty much him and Braden, they're the two shock guys and
- 12:20the, the shock deals nationwide. We've got customers all over on
- 12:23the shock thing and and that works really well.
- 12:26One thing I learned, and I wanted to talk about it is my
- 12:30CPA account. His name's Ashok.
- 12:33He's from India. And I would say to him, I'm
- 12:35like, it's time for me to downsize.
- 12:38And he would say, no, my friend, it's you're right sizing.
- 12:43So you're telling me that things are right now?
- 12:46Yeah. 120 cars a year. That sounds really good.
- 12:50But I'll bet that's a lot of work, isn't it?
- 12:53Oh, man, I'll tell you, you know, and, and just, and you
- 12:58were really kind of on the verge of whether you were really
- 13:02making decent money or not, because sometimes, you know, you
- 13:08got caught in that profitability deal because you're trying to
- 13:13pump out too much. But you know, the demand was
- 13:15there. And so we just tried to keep up
- 13:17with the demand And, and it isn't it, it got to me.
- 13:21I mean, it was just just too much.
- 13:24You know, I admire you and I admire anybody that can build
- 13:29race cars, but I look at the great Ed Howe and his son Chaz
- 13:34is kind of I would compare you to because they are so big in
- 13:40asphalt parts. You know, they build some
- 13:46specialty cars, Rd. course cars, but do you find making parts,
- 13:52building shocks, do you feel that's a little more rewarding
- 13:56because you can specialize a little more?
- 13:59I just see a similarity in both of you now.
- 14:01Yeah, you, you definitely can. And then you open yourself up to
- 14:06a whole lot wider market, you know, so, you know, like with
- 14:10the shock business, I mean, you know, we've got all kinds of
- 14:12chassis brands that run, run our shocks and, and so it, it opens
- 14:18it up, you know, and, and we're really good about keeping
- 14:22private information private. I mean, you know, somebody gets
- 14:25their stuff from us. We don't advertise it.
- 14:27We don't tell people, well, Joe's running this or whatever.
- 14:31We keep that that's confidential and that works really well.
- 14:35But like, you know, we've got all kinds and, and you know, our
- 14:39bases IMCA stuff, but you know, we've got some of the soda
- 14:43stuff, we've got some UMP stuff, you know, so it, it's pretty
- 14:48broad. So if I'm going to get shocks
- 14:52from you, Bob harrisenterprise.com and what,
- 14:58what does the shock look like? What is the name?
- 15:00How can I see one of your shocks?
- 15:02Like what kind of decals on it? It's it's our BHE decal that's
- 15:07on it. Your hat.
- 15:08OK, that's the logo. That's the logo.
- 15:12And we, we build Afco's, we build Bill stains, we build
- 15:19Penske's and we build Jr. is and we do some Integra stuff and we
- 15:25do a lot of repair, shock repair on other brands.
- 15:30I must say that BHE logo is very famous.
- 15:33Bob it it's it's out there, it's out there.
- 15:37You know, one thing I want to touch on, you know, I'm a racer
- 15:40and I race every week. There is a lot to hey, I
- 15:45appreciate you guys building my shocks, you know, because it's
- 15:49hard on me. It's complicated.
- 15:51There's a lot of shims and oils and valves, but yet I like it
- 15:57that you brought up. When a driver starts a
- 16:00relationship with your company, you don't share that shock
- 16:04valving with anybody else. Is that hard to do or you just,
- 16:08you just know that's the heart of your business, keeping that
- 16:11driver's information well? And see, the thing of it is in,
- 16:16in the way we do our business is like if you bought a set of
- 16:20shocks for me, I'll sell you a set of shocks, which I think
- 16:25would be the best possible set of shocks for you and your UMP
- 16:30car. OK, You get these shocks and you
- 16:34run in a couple weeks or whatever, three weeks, whatever
- 16:37the case is. And then you call and you say,
- 16:39you know, Bob, I, I needed to get on the right front a little
- 16:43sooner. It just doesn't seem like it
- 16:45wants to get on the right front as soon as I would like it to.
- 16:49OK, well, send me that shock back.
- 16:52We'll soften the valve on the compression side.
- 16:55And now all of a sudden, see, that's your shock.
- 16:57That's not a generic shock that anybody else has because we tune
- 17:02it to you and your needs. I like that.
- 17:05That's good stuff. All right, there you go,
- 17:07everybody. Bob harrisenterprise.com Shocks
- 17:10is a big business for him right now.
- 17:13All in the all in the family. You mentioned your boy and
- 17:16somebody else and. My daughter runs the office.
- 17:20I love this. This is great.
- 17:22So yeah, we it's it's kind of a family affair.
- 17:27Switching subjects, you've created this heartfelt
- 17:30relationship with Chad Weirs. I want to bring Chad up because
- 17:35when my Big Brother, Rusty Wallace would race in Milwaukee,
- 17:38I remember seeing AU sack stock car sponsored by Weir's
- 17:42Chevrolet. And I'll be darned if it wasn't
- 17:47all these years later, somehow myself and Chad, we had each
- 17:50other's phone number and Chad would start texting me pictures
- 17:55of lacrosse, you know, vintage racing day.
- 17:59And I'm like, Chad, I know this sounds crazy, but your, your
- 18:02dad. Did you guys have a Chevrolet
- 18:05dealership at one time? And it's really cool to see
- 18:08Chad, is what I'm saying. The son, sure.
- 18:12How did you and him? I guess a likely pair, but
- 18:16unlikely pair. How did you and Chad become such
- 18:19good friends? You know, just over the years,
- 18:23you know, we, we bought a lot of his products and Chad originally
- 18:31was a relatively shy guy. Yeah, I didn't, didn't talk a
- 18:35whole lot and stuff. So I convinced him into do
- 18:38because I do in the winter time, I do chassis schools.
- 18:42And so I convinced him into doing a chassis school with me.
- 18:45And he's like, oh man, I don't talk that much.
- 18:48I don't, you know, I'm like, trust me, I'll lead you in.
- 18:52You'll be just fine. And heck, he's been doing
- 18:56chassis schools with me for, I would say 12 years or so.
- 19:00I mean, I, I don't, I'm kind of getting to that point where at
- 19:04this age, I don't, I don't know, exact dates on stuff.
- 19:07It's like it's just been a while.
- 19:09And so we just got to be good friends and, and I promote his
- 19:13product very well because I believe in it and, and I believe
- 19:18in what he stands for and the American made stuff and, and we
- 19:23just got to be good friends. And now we'd, like I said we'd
- 19:27do that show every other Monday night on Facebook.
- 19:31That's speed tips by Bob and Chad.
- 19:34And we, we started that during the COVID season because of
- 19:37course, you know, you, you couldn't see nobody.
- 19:40You had no way of getting a hold of people.
- 19:43So we started that deal and as it's just been successful and we
- 19:48just answer questions, give people Technical Support, you
- 19:53know, we get some guests on there.
- 19:55In fact, we really need to get you on there and talk about what
- 19:58you're doing. And so, you know, it's been
- 20:02pretty neat and it's just been a lot of fun.
- 20:05And him and I are just good friends.
- 20:07That is a pair made in heaven. One thing I do like about Chad
- 20:12is he compliments people. When you go through Chad's, you
- 20:17know, folder, his his magazine, if there's a part that is
- 20:22different, he'll say, you know, Bob Harris inspired, you know,
- 20:26Nick Hoffman inspired, David Stremi inspired.
- 20:30Have you and Chad, you know, on your side?
- 20:33Do you have a part or piece in his magazine that you inspired
- 20:37that you're proud of? I wouldn't say that I have one
- 20:43specific piece, but we have a lot of pieces that I feel we
- 20:49contributed to updates and, you know, or he'll send me a part.
- 20:58Try this. Tell me what you think.
- 21:01You know. So we do a lot of experimenting
- 21:04for him and I kind of like to run under the radar.
- 21:08I mean, I don't, I don't, you know, fame is not something
- 21:13that's a big deal to me. So if if we can make something
- 21:16better for the racer, that's what it's all about.
- 21:19They're the guys that are paying our bill.
- 21:22But this what we're doing right now, this is a good thing in our
- 21:26sport. I think getting information out
- 21:28there and, and let's change subject again and, and let's end
- 21:31like this. We, we got 9 minutes left or so.
- 21:34We wanted to do a half hour conversation with you, Bob and,
- 21:39and I appreciate your time. I want to talk about IMCA right
- 21:43now, every IMCA racer and what I know about IMCA and Brett Root
- 21:49and I've run plenty IMCA races. The IMCA modified.
- 21:53That division is meant for a man that goes to work but yet loves
- 21:57racing, wants to compete at a high level.
- 22:01How do you see IMCA today? How was it doing financially?
- 22:07Are are the cars out of hand? What do you think of IMCA today
- 22:12compared to 40 years ago or more?
- 22:15Well, I think they have done an exceptional job at keeping the
- 22:23relative cost down. And what I mean by relative, I
- 22:29mean face the facts. I mean, it's just like a Big Mac
- 22:32at McDonald's costs a lot more than it used to.
- 22:36And so costs are going to go up. But I think they've done a real
- 22:40good job with it. You know, their tire rule, you
- 22:44know, I'm not a huge fan of the particular tire that they run,
- 22:47but everybody runs on the same tire and we make it work.
- 22:51But the sports growing, I mean, you know, they're, they're doing
- 22:55quite a few specials now and, and some of the specials are
- 22:59starting to pay well. And it's like the Harris class
- 23:01modified deal, you know, whoever wins, that's going to be 4 grand
- 23:05and it's $250 to start. So they're, they're quite a few
- 23:10racers that are doing that and some of them are picking and
- 23:14choosing, you know, some of them are IMCA started more, more like
- 23:20a weekly deal. And, and, and I think weekly is
- 23:24good to a point. Now I like the idea that there's
- 23:30some specials out there that you can go because, you know, the
- 23:33weekly grind sometimes can get, you know, you've got family,
- 23:38you've got softball games, you've got baseball games, you
- 23:41just got stuff to do. And so I think they have went in
- 23:48a great direction. I, I think they're growing.
- 23:52I, I think they're doing an awesome job.
- 23:55You know, Brett's doing a good job with their tech support and
- 23:58stuff. You know, they, I think they do
- 24:03an awesome job. Yeah, and I do too.
- 24:05I wanted, I wanted to give you the platform.
- 24:07I think I am CA is the best division in the world.
- 24:11And by the way, everybody a little known fact I am CA is the
- 24:15longest, oldest running association in America, far
- 24:19older than than than NASCAR. So I think they're doing a great
- 24:24job. Just a little bit more the the
- 24:27racer in me, Bob, this is the racer coming out of me.
- 24:30Sure. We all know that they kept the
- 24:33stock front clip because they did not want geometry to get out
- 24:37of hand financially. They wanted to keep, you know,
- 24:42front geometry intact. So we, we've gone through all
- 24:46the front clips and now you can buy front clips and then you got
- 24:51to have them, you know, welded together.
- 24:54Do you ever see in your heart of all hearts and your brain of all
- 24:59brains? Do you ever see an affordable
- 25:03front clip being built out of normal tubing?
- 25:10I don't see that happening. There's a certain amount of
- 25:16illusion that we have to put in perspective to these cars.
- 25:21You know, if we made it out of a tube front clip, then what
- 25:25difference would it be between that and a late model car?
- 25:29So now from a manufacturer's standpoint, yeah, I'm all about
- 25:35a tube clip. But the illusion is we would
- 25:39lose the actual modified identity if we did that.
- 25:46You know, I've always wanted to talk about this with somebody
- 25:50that's seen it all and you've seen it all when I race at
- 25:54Volusia, you know, for the dirt Car Nationals and I live in
- 25:58Saint Louis, so UMP is my jam. And when my high end engineer
- 26:04friends come from NASCAR and they want to see my car, I say
- 26:07come to the back first 'cause if I take them to the front of my
- 26:13modified, they're like, Oh my God, it's, it's a car front
- 26:18clip. I'm like, yeah, they keep it
- 26:20like this to, you know, try to keep the cost down.
- 26:23And I've never heard anybody put it your way.
- 26:27I want to commend you. You've really changed my mind on
- 26:30this sometimes illusion. You're right.
- 26:33We, we don't have any business competing with super late
- 26:36models, do we? No, I mean, that's their
- 26:40division. They get to do what they want to
- 26:42do. That's their rules.
- 26:45Don't mess with our modifieds because how many cars do they
- 26:48have and how many modifieds do we have?
- 26:51You know that and and let's end like this because I tell
- 26:55everybody they're like, tell me about them modifieds.
- 26:58You know, like they're trying to talk bad about the modifieds and
- 27:01I rebelled because sometimes I'm a little defensive and I said,
- 27:04well, let me tell you about modifieds.
- 27:07They're the largest car count of race car in America.
- 27:11So. They do they doing something
- 27:13right, ain't they, Bob? Yeah, yeah.
- 27:16So, I mean, it would, it would be, you know, I, I know people
- 27:20have tried that idea that tube clip, but it, it, it, it would
- 27:24just be a big mistake. OK everybody, I'm sure we could
- 27:29celebrate Bob in a three-part series.
- 27:32There's much more to that man. But right now it's June 27th,
- 27:38the Harris clash. 24th. 24th thank you so much.
- 27:42The Harris Clash on June 24th, The Harris Clash on June 24th,
- 27:48We say it two times and it is the oldest one day event.
- 27:53It's 34 years old, so make sure. So what do we do?

- 28:15still log on to imca.tv and watch it live streaming on
- 28:21there. They do an awesome job.
- 28:23They put on a good show. A lot of times I'll stay home
- 28:28and watch the streaming if I just don't feel like going to
- 28:31the races some nights. And I only live 30 and I only
- 28:34live 36 minutes from the racetrack. 36, That's my number.
- 28:38How old are you now, Bob? You're, you're acting like
- 28:40you're old. You look good though.
- 28:42I'm 71. Oh man, you.
- 28:45You I'm a year older. I'm a year older than my buddy.
- 28:50Oh, my God, we're not. We're not going to date this
- 28:52show because we want to, you know, go over the next month.
