Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: We need less fighting, more long term thinking in Wellington
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: There's no reason parties on left and right in New
- 0:02Speaker 1: Zealand politics can't work together to get stuff done. We've
- 0:05Speaker 1: seen it this week with the India FTA. It is
- 0:07Speaker 1: essentially just deal making. It'll pass because a party not
- 0:10Speaker 1: in government joined forces with two in government to make
- 0:13Speaker 1: it happen. Excellent. We've seen it with a member's bill
- 0:16Speaker 1: this week. This is Labour's Ardina Williams on international money transfers.
- 0:20Speaker 1: When you transfer money to somebody overseas, the banks and
- 0:23Speaker 1: the transfer companies can basically say what they like about
- 0:26Speaker 1: fees and commissions and then charge you what they like.
- 0:29Speaker 1: They don't have to be upfront about it, and the
- 0:31Speaker 1: bill would force them to tell you what they are
- 0:34Speaker 1: going to charge you before you've charged it, rather than
- 0:37Speaker 1: find out once the money's left your account. Seems like
- 0:39Speaker 1: pretty sensible lawmaking to me. Past its first reading excellent
- 0:44Speaker 1: a Labor MP's bill. National didn't support it, but that
- 0:47Speaker 1: didn't matter because every other party in the House, including
- 0:51Speaker 1: Act and New Zealand First did. The Modern Slavery Bill
- 0:55Speaker 1: had a similar bipartisan feel to it. Imagine if we
- 0:58Speaker 1: could get the same sort of of lovin in Parliament
- 1:01Speaker 1: on Energy and infrastructure. Just imagine what sort of country
- 1:05Speaker 1: we could be. The fact our politicians are trained like
- 1:10Speaker 1: pitbulls to attack each other. The opposition is literally called
- 1:13Speaker 1: the opposition is an advantage to a single party's state
- 1:17Speaker 1: like China. Don't get me wrong, we don't want to
- 1:19Speaker 1: go down the dictatorship route. But where the Chinese and
- 1:23Speaker 1: others who don't have to worry about that pesky we
- 1:25Speaker 1: thing we call democracy is that they have one plan,
- 1:29Speaker 1: one team, one dream. They build roads and trading routes
- 1:33Speaker 1: with the next fifty to one hundred years in mind
- 1:36Speaker 1: rather than the next three. Business and industry and therefore
- 1:40Speaker 1: jobs in this country depend on and plan around things
- 1:44Speaker 1: that they know to be true. Getting Beijing style plans
- 1:49Speaker 1: without resorting to dictatorship would require, sadly, a few grown ups,
- 1:55Speaker 1: a little less mongrel, and a little more long term
- 1:59Speaker 1: thinking in Wellington. For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge,
