- 10:42Musk announced a sudden change to Twitter's user policies too.
- 10:46To combat data scraping by AI companies, Twitter has
- 10:50temporarily restricted the number of tweets users can
- 10:53access daily. The limitation varies.
- 10:56For verified and unverified users, and it's unclear how long
- 11:00these limits will last or the conditions required to lift
- 11:04them. As per Musk's declaration,
- 11:07verified accounts can access 6000 tweets per day, while
- 11:10unverified ones are limited to 600.
- 11:14Now, new unverified users who joined post the announcement are
- 11:18further restricted to only 300 tweets per day.
- 11:22These rates are expected to increase soon, according to
- 11:25Musk. Now, Musk's move followed his
- 11:28expression of concern over, quote, extreme levels of data
- 11:31scraping by artificial intelligence companies.
- 11:35This directly affects chat bots like ChatGPT that rely on
- 11:39substantial data servers typically scraped from the
- 11:42Internet. And the impact of these new
- 11:44restrictions on other Twitter features, such as their audio
- 11:47conversation platform spaces, remains unclear, however.
- 11:52A surge in error messages like quote rate limit exceeded on
- 11:57users home feed suggests far reaching applications.

- 18:41Mars One was a Dutch notforprofit foundation

- 19:38to this endeavor, though. They sought to simplify the
- 19:40mission by making it a one way trip, eliminating the need for
- 19:45complex return journey technology.
- 19:47By using existing technology and adopting an incremental
- 19:50approach, Mars 1 aimed to gradually build up the necessary
- 19:54infrastructure of Mars for long term human habitation.
- 19:59The project strategy consisted of sending initial unmanned
- 20:02missions, deploying living units, life support units and
- 20:06supply units to Mars. These units would then be set up
- 20:09by robots to create a habitable settlement before the arrival of
- 20:14the first crew. The crew would be
- 20:16self-sufficient, relying on in situ resource utilization or I
- 20:20SRU, particularly extracting water from Martian soil and
- 20:24producing oxygen for breathing. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
- 20:29That's exactly what Elon Musk wants to do with SpaceX and
- 20:33Starship. Now Mars One adopted an open
- 20:36call for volunteers. Willing to embark on a one way
- 20:40mission to Mars? You would leave Earth.
- 20:43You would fly to Mars. You would spend the rest of your
- 20:45days on Mars. You would never see anybody from
- 20:48Earth again. This unprecedented selection
- 20:50process attracted applicants from diverse backgrounds from
- 20:54around the world. After rigorous selection
- 20:56process, Mars One aim to train these individuals extensively
- 21:00the simulated Martian environment right here on Earth.
- 21:03They prepare them for the harsh conditions and isolation.
- 21:07They would experience on Mars now.
- 21:09Despite its innovative approach and vision, Mars want to face
- 21:12significant challenges and criticisms.
- 21:15The foremost concern was the mission's feasibility given the
- 21:18technological, financial and logistical hurdles.
- 21:21Critics questioned whether the mission could be accomplished
- 21:24with the proposed budget and the reliance on unproven
- 21:27technologies like insitu resource utilization, making
- 21:32water out of Martian soil. Moreover, the ethical
- 21:36implications of sending humans on a Oneway mission raised
- 21:39concerns considering the psychological impact of
- 21:42permanent isolation at the potential of death on the Red
- 21:46Planet. The open call selection process
- 21:49and the proposal to televise the mission also face criticism for
- 21:53potentially exploiting the participants and reducing a

- 22:18When Mars One opened the application process for
- 22:20astronaut selection in April of 2013, they received a
- 22:24significant number of applications from aspiring Mars
- 22:27settlers around the globe by the end of the application process
- 22:31in August of 2013. Mars One reported having
- 22:34received over 200,000 applications, although this
- 22:38number was highly disputed and some sources suggest the actual
- 22:42number was quite lower. The application process was part
- 22:45of Mars One's fundraising strategy.
- 22:48Applicants were charged an application fee which varied by
- 22:51country, and the fee was intended to be inversely
- 22:53proportional to the gross domestic product of the
- 22:56applicants country, ranging from $5 to $75.
- 23:01The total amount of money raised from the application process
- 23:04isn't quite clear. Even if one took the lowest
- 23:07application fee of $5, if 200,000 applicants were indeed
- 23:12received, this would amount to at least $1,000,000 USD.
- 23:17However, due to the uncertainty about the actual number of
- 23:20applications and the variable application fee, it's difficult
- 23:23to provide a precise figure for the total funds raised through
- 23:27this process. These applications came from a
- 23:30wide variety of backgrounds and places, showcasing the global
- 23:33interest in space exploration in the appeal of the Mars 1 mission
- 23:37Now Sue and PN. An American applicant, Sue was
- 23:41one of the 100 finalists. She works as a software engineer
- 23:45and had a keen interest in space exploration.
- 23:47PN's motivation to apply for Mars One came from her dream to
- 23:51explore the unknown and to contribute to humanity's
- 23:54understanding of the universe. Ryan McDonald, The British
- 23:57physicist. McDonald was also among the 100
- 24:01finalists. He was studying physics at the
- 24:03University of Oxford at the time of his application and was
- 24:05fascinated by the prospect of contributing to human knowledge
- 24:09about Mars. He saw Mars One as an
- 24:11opportunity to be a part of the groundbreaking mission that can
- 24:14change how we understand our place in the universe.
- 24:16Diana Masani Patel, British pharmacist and scuba diving
- 24:20instructor, was another of the 100 finalists.
- 24:23She was motivated by a sense of adventure.
- 24:26And the desire to inspire the next generation of explorers.
- 24:30Now it's important to know that while these applicants were
- 24:32willing to leave their lives on Earth for a one way ticket to
- 24:35Mars, the Mars 1 mission faced significant criticism and
- 24:38skepticism over its feasibility, the ethics and lack of a clear
- 24:43plan for the safety and wellbeing of the crew.
- 24:46A glaring obstacle to Mars One's plans was the substantial
- 24:50financial requirements. The missions cost was estimated
- 24:53at a whopping $6 billion. And Mars won in to raise these
- 24:57funds through a mix of sponsorship, media rights,
- 25:00crowdfunding and private investments.
- 25:03However, is the mission progressed, it became evident
- 25:05that the organization was struggling to generate the
- 25:08necessary capital. The idea to fund a significant
- 25:11part of the mission through the sale of media rights, turning
- 25:14the astronaut selection process and subsequent life on Mars into
- 25:17a reality show, received a mixed reactions.
- 25:21But critics argued it trivialized the serious nature
- 25:23of space exploration and carried ethical implications.
- 25:27Meanwhile, potential sponsors and investors were hesitant.
- 25:29Aware of the high risks associated with the mission.
- 25:33The Mars 1 mission proposed to use rockets and spacecraft
- 25:36available commercially from established aerospace companies.
- 25:40This meant they didn't have to develop and build their own.
- 25:43Which would have been an immensely complex and expensive
- 25:45undertaking. In their initial plan, they
- 25:47proposed using the Falcon Heavy rocket manufactured by SpaceX to
- 25:51launch their payloads to Mars. Falcon Heavy is one of the most
- 25:54powerful operation rockets are in the world, capable of lifting
- 25:58significant payloads to Mars. For the actual spacecraft, they
- 26:02proposed using a modified version of Spacex's Dragon
- 26:05capsule. The Dragon capsule had already
- 26:08been used successfully to ferry cargo.
- 26:11At this point, to and from the International Space Station, but
- 26:14there's been no cruise to the International Space Station when
- 26:18Mars One was in play. Now, it's important to note that
- 26:21while Mars One stated their intention to use these vehicles
- 26:24at the time of the missions cancellations, no contracts had
- 26:27been signed with NASA or SpaceX or any other aerospace
- 26:32companies. And for the missions, Lander and
- 26:34Rover Mars One partnered with Lockheed Martin.
- 26:38Which had extensive experience in building and operating
- 26:40spacecraft for NASA's Mars missions.
- 26:44One of the more ambitious elements of the Mars One plant
- 26:46was a use of life support system to manufacture fuel on Mars for
- 26:50the use of vehicles and machinery, which would have
- 26:53required an advanced level of in situ resource utilization
- 26:56technology at the time of the missions proposal.
- 26:59Such a system was still in the development phases and not yet
- 27:03proven. Now, Mars 1 proposed to use
- 27:04existing technology in vehicles wherever possible.
- 27:07It also relied on several unproven technologies in systems
- 27:11at the time, and its inability to fully address these
- 27:13technological challenges was a significant factor in the
- 27:17mission's ultimate failure. Mars One hinged on the belief
- 27:20that it could only use existing technology to create a livable
- 27:23outpost on Mars, however. This overlooked the significant
- 27:27technological advances still required for such a mission.
- 27:31The dependency on as yet unproven technologies for
- 27:34longterm life support and radiation protection was a major
- 27:38concern. The timeline proposed by Mars
- 27:40One was also criticized as overly optimistic.
- 27:44The plan involves sending multiple uncrewed missions to
- 27:47set up a habitable environment and life support systems, all
- 27:51before humans sent foot on Mars. Now this timeline, given the
- 27:54complexity of the tasks, seemed very farfetched and sending
- 27:58humans on a one way journey to Mars raised significant
- 28:02psychological and ethical issues.
- 28:04Mars One applicants were volunteering not just for an
- 28:07exploration mission, but for a lifetime on an alien planet.
- 28:12The potential psychological stress.
- 28:14And the ethical implications of sending individuals on a journey
- 28:17with such high risks and no return raise serious concerns
- 28:21about the missions. Moral standing human spaceflight
- 28:24to Mars presents unique psychological challenges.
- 28:28An interplanetary journey to Mars, as proposed by Mars One,
- 28:31would entail an isolation and confinement period of up to nine
- 28:34months during the voyage, followed by a potentially
- 28:37permanent state on an alien planet millions of miles away
- 28:41from Earth. These conditions can give rise
- 28:43to a host of psychological issues, including but not limit
- 28:47to loneliness, depression, anxiety and interpersonal
- 28:51conflicts. The isolation from friends,
- 28:53family and familiar surroundings can intensify feelings of
- 28:56loneliness and can lead to depression, The confinement of
- 29:00the spacecraft, but limited room to move and lack of privacy and
- 29:04create tension and conflict among the crew.
- 29:07For long periods of monotony, broken only by high stress
- 29:10situations can cause cognitive and behavioral issues.
- 29:14Furthermore, communication delays with Earth ranging up to
- 29:1724 minutes round trip can create feelings of isolation and
- 29:21frustration and can challenge the crew's problem solving
- 29:24abilities as immediate support or advice won't be available to
- 29:28them In a pod arrival on Mars, the astronauts will be faced
- 29:32with a bearing and harsh environment drastically
- 29:34different from Earth. This alien landscape, combined
- 29:37with the realization of a permanent stay, may further
- 29:40exacerbate feelings of isolation, homesickness and
- 29:43stress. Astronauts on a mission to Mars
- 29:46will require a unique blend of skills to cope with these
- 29:48challenges though, including technical and scientific
- 29:51expertise, excellent problem solving skills, and robust
- 29:55psychological resilience. The selection, the training and
- 29:59support of these pioneers would be paramount to the success of
- 30:02the mission. And the wellbeing of the crew.
- 30:04This all culminates in the bankruptcy in the end of Mars 1.
- 30:10Mars One went bankrupt in 2019, and it was because Boss Landsrup
- 30:15did a debate against MIT researchers.
- 30:19So Boss, the cofounder of Mars One and MIT Massachusetts
- 30:24Institute of Technology researchers, had an event.
- 30:27There was a debate. It revolved around a critical
- 30:29study by MIT graduate students. Which analyzed the feasibility
- 30:33of the Mars 1 mission plan. They use publicly available
- 30:37information about Mars One and the life support requirements of
- 30:39a crude mission to Mars. They found out that with the
- 30:43current technology, sustaining life on Mars would be
- 30:46challenging due to issues like the overproduction of oxygen
- 30:50from plants in the habitat and the need for a significant
- 30:53number of spare parts for the life support system in every
- 30:56spots. To the study, Boz Landstorm
- 30:58claimed that Mars One had solutions to these issues.
- 31:02And the criticism was based on assumptions that did not apply
- 31:05to the mission's plans. Lancedorp did not, however,
- 31:08provide detailed explanations of counter arguments to all the
- 31:12points raised by the MIT team, and Lancedorp invited the
- 31:16researchers for a public debate to discuss these findings.

- 33:46copycat app. We reached out to Spiro on
- 33:49Thursday for additional details on the potential lawsuit, but we
- 33:53received an automated response from Twitter with a poop emoji
- 33:56and the company's standard procedure when journalists seek
- 33:59comments. The development marks an
- 34:01escalation of tensions between the two social media
- 34:03powerhouses. Twitter's challenge comes after
- 34:06the introduction of Threads on Wednesday, an app that is
- 34:09rapidly attracting users dissatisfied with the recent
- 34:12changes to Twitter. Elon Musk, who acquired Twitter
- 34:15last year for a staggering $44 billion, had made significant
- 34:19modifications to the platform that have been broadly unpopular
- 34:22among the user community. Threads development team is said
- 34:25to be devoid of former Twitter employees appoint, Meta
- 34:28spokesperson Andy Stone emphasized in the Thursday post
- 34:31on Threads. No one on the Threads
- 34:33engineering team is a former Twitter employee.
- 34:35That's just not a thing, Stone wrote, however.

- 40:52mitigation efforts. The company maintains the
- 40:56Starship was launched in alignment with FAA licensure,
- 41:00despite the resulting anomalies leading to mission termination
- 41:04and the subsequent destruction of the launch vehicle over the
- 41:07Gulf of Mexico. In the launch documents, SpaceX
- 41:10downplayed the launches impact on the environment.
- 41:13The company admitted to the damage on the concrete
- 41:15launchpad, acknowledging that it resulted in some debris and some
- 41:19dust. Following the Rockets explosion,
- 41:21though, the FEA activated an anomaly response plan, requiring
- 41:26SpaceX to obtain a new license before proceeding with another
- 41:30launch. And despite this, SpaceX stated
- 41:33that the environmental assessment remains unchanged and
- 41:36it's progressing towards another Starship launched hopefully
- 41:39within the next four to six weeks, according to Elon Musk.
- 41:45Spacex's CEO Elon Musk has not allowed the setbacks to dampen
- 41:48his ambitious schedule of test launches from South Texas.
- 41:52The billionaire has pinned hopes on the reusable rocket system as
- 41:55a critical component for the expansion of the company's
- 41:57Starlink satellite network and for NASA's plans to return
- 42:01astronauts to the moon. Rocket also serves as the
- 42:04vehicle that Musk hopes will make his vision of colonizing
- 42:07Mars a reality. On March 13th, Musk shared on
- 42:11Twitter that the Starship. Would be ready to launch within
- 42:136 to 8 weeks. Further, in an interview on June

- 45:35of electric mobility. Keiji Keita, president of
- 45:38Toyota's Research and Development Center for carbon
- 45:40neutrality, stated on Tuesday that simplifying the production
- 45:44process for battery materials when considerably bring down the
- 45:47cost of the company's long anticipated next generation
- 45:50technology. This move is designed to address
- 45:53one of the major challenges. Currently facing the automotive

- 46:53charging times, limited battery capabilities and the risk of
- 46:57fires, all of which have been significant obstacles to the
- 47:00wider adoption of Ev's. These new generation batteries
- 47:04replace a liquid electrolyte with a solid one and use lithium
- 47:08metal at the anode instead of graphite, which is currently the
- 47:11standard and lithium ion batteries.
- 47:13And the use of solid electrolytes can improve energy
- 47:16density, safety and potentially decrease charging times and
- 47:20despite their potential. Solid-state batteries have
- 47:23remained a challenge due to high production costs in
- 47:26manufacturing complexities. These difficulties have prompted
- 47:29automakers to push back launch timelines and concentrate their
- 47:32efforts on developing and improving liquid based lithium
- 47:35ion batteries instead. Toyota, however, is poised to

- 49:24Yet Toyota's top brass are tempering expectations.
- 49:27Noting that the solid-state batteries are not a panacea for
- 49:30all battery challengers now, Toyota's chief technology
- 49:34officer expressed caution over the new tech.
- 49:36They said there is also room for improvement for liquidbased
- 49:40batteries. The crux of the EV battery
- 49:42competition will ultimately be value added on the car as a
- 49:46product. And how much we can control the
- 49:48overall volume of batteries and how effectively we can use them.
- 49:52On another note, despite its latest announcement, Toyota is
- 49:55also committing substantial resources to hydrogen fuel cell
- 49:59Technology company announced last month that it will
- 50:02establish a hydrogen factory to further develop fuel cell
- 50:05technology, particularly for commercial customers.
- 50:09This indicates that Toyota is keeping its options open as the
- 50:12race for cleaner, more sustainable automotive
- 50:15technology intensifies. Toyota's hydrogen initiatives
- 50:19will be focused on markets in Japan, China and Europe.
- 50:21We will work toward full scale commercialization as we move
- 50:25forward with these initiatives. The next generation system will
- 50:28achieve a 37% cost reduction through technological progress,
- 50:33volume efficiency and localization, the company said.
- 50:35And this announcement by Toyota is signal a pivotal moment in
- 50:39the advancement of electric vehicle technology.
- 50:42Several challenges remain the company's commitment.
- 50:44The solid-state batteries and its drive to overcome these
- 50:47obstacles could potentially accelerate the transition to a
- 50:50more sustainable transportation future.
