- 0:00Speaker 1: This is how we do it. This is how we
- 0:03Speaker 1: do it. This is how we do it.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Sha-na-na-na-na-na-na.
- 0:09Speaker 1: This is how we do it.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Sha-na-na-na-na-na-na. Good morning.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Good afternoon.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Hi, everybody.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Hi, hi, hi, hi, hi, everybody.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I love you.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I love you. I love you.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Holy cow. Well, Joelle, first of all... Joelle, you look beautiful.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I don't know what's happening.
- 0:28Speaker 4: You look amazing.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I've been shopping.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Oh, I see. And Daniel, you've changed your look and
- 0:34Speaker 1: your background.
- 0:36Speaker 3: I am... I mean, I guess I can tell the fans.
- 0:40Speaker 3: I am currently in New York City.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Oh, wow, we're all jumping around the world.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Indeed, I'm meeting.
- 0:47Speaker 2: My girlfriend's family. You know what's messed up? The two
- 0:49Speaker 2: black people aren't jumping around the world. The two black
- 0:53Speaker 2: people aren't jumping around the world at all.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I had to meet my girlfriend's family for the first time.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Oh, congratulations. That's amazing.
- 1:01Speaker 1: How'd it go? Did they like you? What's not to like?
- 1:03Speaker 1: You're a charming motherfucker.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Well, you honor me. I really appreciate that. Haven't met yet.
- 1:07Speaker 3: We got COVID tests this morning. So when we come
- 1:09Speaker 3: back with negative results and we quarantine a little bit,
- 1:12Speaker 3: then we'll be okay meeting people. But for the time being,
- 1:14Speaker 3: we're shacked up, just kind of chilling.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Did you do the rapid test?
- 1:18Speaker 6: It is.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I think so. Yeah, we went to the hospital and
- 1:22Speaker 3: got the nose swab. It's my first time getting a
- 1:24Speaker 3: nose swab.
- 1:24Speaker 2: This is the thing everybody's doing.
- 1:26Speaker 1: They go deep. They go deep like Donald.
- 1:30Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:30Speaker 2: This is the thing everybody's doing nowadays. Everybody's just getting
- 1:33Speaker 2: that rapid test to make sure that they can hang
- 1:35Speaker 2: out with each other.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Daniel, you should have told me. You could have hung
- 1:37Speaker 1: out in my apartment.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I'm so sorry.
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's sitting there empty.
- 1:41Speaker 3: I didn't want to bother you. I'm so sorry. Next
- 1:43Speaker 3: time I'll bother you for it.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Daniel, that's very interesting. Because when I ask for that shit,
- 1:48Speaker 2: he tells me no every time.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, you know why? You know why? Because Daniel will
- 1:53Speaker 1: fucking be respectful. I can picture you having like a
- 1:57Speaker 1: party and smoking fucking jazz cabbage.
- 2:02Speaker 2: One, I don't have any friends other than you and
- 2:05Speaker 2: Daniel and Joelle. And Daniel and Joelle and I don't
- 2:08Speaker 2: hang out, okay?
- 2:10Speaker 1: Not yet. Wait till the tour bus. Wait till the
- 2:13Speaker 1: tour bus.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Oh, baby.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Oh, my God. That's so dangerous. That's so dangerous.
- 2:18Speaker 1: No, but I can trust. I can picture trusting Daniel
- 2:21Speaker 1: in my apartment, and I know that nothing would happen.
- 2:24Speaker 1: With you, I can picture, like, you'd forget some candle
- 2:28Speaker 1: next to the drapes and then backdraft.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I find that one offensive. Because what makes you think
- 2:39Speaker 2: that I like candles? What the fuck is that about?
- 2:44Speaker 1: That's offensive. I don't like candles.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Everybody likes candles.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I am one of those people who does not like candles.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I think, I mean, my wife loves candles, so they
- 2:54Speaker 2: burn in our house. But I'm one of those people
- 2:56Speaker 2: who's like, you're going to light a candle?
- 2:59Speaker 1: Is this like a fire hazard thing?
- 3:00Speaker 2: I just don't. I mean, it smells waxy and scented.
- 3:04Speaker 2: The only candles I do like is at the hotel.
- 3:07Speaker 2: Whatever that hotel is that's in New York City. And
- 3:11Speaker 2: the lobby smells like... It smells like this certain candle.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And apparently this candle costs a shit ton of money.
- 3:18Speaker 2: I want to say it's the Bowery. I could be wrong.
- 3:20Speaker 3: The Bowery, probably. Yeah, the Bowery.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Is that the one with the club in the lobby?
- 3:23Speaker 1: It's not a club. It's like a really sexy lounge.
- 3:26Speaker 2: There's one that has literally a club right next door. Like,
- 3:30Speaker 2: on some nights you come downstairs and there's a club
- 3:34Speaker 2: popping right next door. It's like... And you can easily...
- 3:39Speaker 2: You can easily, what is the other one? There's a
- 3:40Speaker 2: bunch of them.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Anyway, my point is- I don't know, but Josh Radin
- 3:43Speaker 1: stayed at the Bowery so much they gave him an
- 3:45Speaker 1: embroidered bathrobe with his name on it. And when he
- 3:48Speaker 1: would stay, the bathrobe would be lying on the bed.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Would he have to leave the bathrobe there when he left?
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah, literally at the Bowery, when you spend enough money
- 3:57Speaker 1: there and stay there long enough, you get your own
- 3:59Speaker 1: embroidered robe and they lie it on your bed when
- 4:03Speaker 1: you're there. And when you're not there, they store it
- 4:04Speaker 1: away in the embroidered robe room.
- 4:07Speaker 2: That's hilarious.
- 4:08Speaker 1: That's some baller shit.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Good for rating. Good for rating.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Did you see what, first of all, I need to know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: first of all, I have a special surprise for you
- 4:15Speaker 1: on this episode. I planned.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Donald, Joelle, and Dan will know what the surprise is.
- 4:21Speaker 2: You got me the fucking, oh shit, you got the, yo, Zach,
- 4:25Speaker 2: you got me the simulator. You got me the simulator.
- 4:28Speaker 1: No, no, calm down. You got me the simulator. Not
- 4:31Speaker 1: that good.
- 4:31Speaker 2: It's less exciting than that.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It's not a $ 6, 000 golf simulator, no.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I really appreciate that, though.
- 4:38Speaker 1: By the way, speaking of surprises, I don't even know
- 4:41Speaker 1: who 2 Chainz is. I imagine he's a very famous rapper, right?
- 4:45Speaker 2: Yeah, 2 Chainz. Did you just say 2 Chainz?
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah, do you like 2 Chainz, you guys? Are you
- 4:50Speaker 1: 2 Chainz fans? Because the three of you, I think,
- 4:52Speaker 1: like rap, right?
- 4:53Speaker 2: 2 Chainz is iconic.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I was going to say, you know, I'm certainly a
- 4:56Speaker 3: Timmy Boy fan, most certainly.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Jump, man, jump, man, jump. No, that's Future, right? Them
- 5:00Speaker 2: boys up to something. That's him and Future.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Now, I've never heard a 2 Chainz song. I imagine
- 5:05Speaker 1: he's very successful, and I can tell you that he's
- 5:07Speaker 1: friends with Kanye West. Because I went on the interwebs today,
- 5:11Speaker 1: and Kanye West gave 2 Chainz an amphibious ATV. That
- 5:18Speaker 1: is the coolest looking thing I've ever seen.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Kanye West is a billionaire, dude.
- 5:24Speaker 1: No, I know, but he still gave his friend an
- 5:26Speaker 1: amphibious ATV and he put a plaque on it. You got,
- 5:30Speaker 1: I mean, if you're listening to this, just Google it.
- 5:31Speaker 1: It's the coolest thing ever. And I'm hoping that one
- 5:33Speaker 1: day Donald will get rich enough to buy me one.
- 5:37Speaker 2: If I get a billion dollars in my bank account,
- 5:39Speaker 2: when I, I should say, when I get a billion
- 5:41Speaker 2: dollars in my bank account.
- 5:42Speaker 1: How much do you need? A billion?
- 5:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you need a billion.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Oh man, it's so, it's called a, A Sherma or something?
- 5:49Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Because Kanye probably paid for the thing and still had
- 5:53Speaker 2: a billion after he paid for it.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Joel, can you look up what it's called? Just look
- 5:56Speaker 1: up amphibious ATV that 2 Chainz got from Kanye.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Sherp ATVs?
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeezy Sherp ATVs? Yes, you guys.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Is it Yeezy branded?
- 6:07Speaker 1: It's Yeezy branded? Well, he tricked it out, and I'm
- 6:11Speaker 1: sure there's a dope sound system in it.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Yeah, he did.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Did you see the picture? You guys, if you're listening,
- 6:16Speaker 1: you have to Google image this thing. Everybody needs one.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Everybody needs a Sherp.
- 6:20Speaker 2: Do you know what I want? I want the Sherp
- 6:21Speaker 2: ATV that turns into a sub. I want the sub version.
- 6:26Speaker 2: I want the one that when... Because look, it's great
- 6:28Speaker 2: to be able to go over hills and it's great
- 6:31Speaker 2: to be able to do like, you know, go in
- 6:34Speaker 2: the water when being chased. But you know what's even
- 6:36Speaker 2: better than that? To be like, that's it, fuck it,
- 6:38Speaker 2: I'm out. And then dive. And then dive to the
- 6:42Speaker 2: depths of the ocean. Depths that, you know, some people, like, dude,
- 6:46Speaker 2: I want the freaking spy car. I want the spy car.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Did you see the picture?
- 6:49Speaker 2: Lies, lives on ground, and water.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Dude.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I want that G.I.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Joe shit. Land and sea and air. Yo, Joe!
- 6:57Speaker 1: Dude, did you see the picture Joel just sent us?
- 7:00Speaker 1: It's fucking amazing.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Fighting for freedom over drugs. Wherever there's trouble over land
- 7:06Speaker 2: and sea and air.
- 7:08Speaker 6: G.I.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Joe is there. Oh, my God, that shit is tight.
- 7:14Speaker 1: If an erection was an ATV, it.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Would look like that. That shit looks like a Cobra vehicle.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Wow.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It looks like a Cobra vehicle from the G.I. Joe cartoon.
- 7:25Speaker 1: He has it blessed with a proverb. Yeah, he engraved
- 7:30Speaker 1: a proverb on a plaque and put it on the thing.
- 7:34Speaker 3: This is wild.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You guys, my only wish for Donald Faison is that
- 7:38Speaker 1: he gets rich enough to buy me that thing.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Love it.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I hope that one day that is possible.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Hey, Daniel, tell me when the surprise is present.
- 7:51Speaker 3: The surprise is ready and waiting.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Okay, so Donald, I got you a present today. Is
- 7:58Speaker 1: it a simulator? No. For listeners out there, we were
- 8:04Speaker 1: hoping to invite Sarah Chalk on today because she's prominent
- 8:10Speaker 1: and very funny in this episode. But she is just,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think she's like camping in the middle of nowhere
- 8:16Speaker 1: Canada with her family. And so she couldn't come. So
- 8:22Speaker 1: I reached out to everybody's favorite guest. Let's bring him in. Donald,
- 8:30Speaker 1: close your eyes. Close your eyes.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Bill Lawrence is in the house!
- 8:38Speaker 4: Yay!
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yay! Yay!
- 8:44Speaker 1: Look how happy he is. Bill, look how much happiness
- 8:47Speaker 1: you bring Donald.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yes, dude.
- 8:52Speaker 4: How could I be a surprise? I think about every episode.
- 8:55Speaker 1: This is very exciting.
- 8:56Speaker 2: But still, it's always a good episode when Bill's on.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Count on it being a good episode when Bill is on.
- 9:03Speaker 2: The fans love it. I love it.
- 9:05Speaker 4: Zach loves it.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you one thing. I was hoping
- 9:08Speaker 2: you were a golf simulator, Bill. I'm not going to lie.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Bill, I got you a surprise.
- 9:15Speaker 4: He goes, a golf simulator? I understand that. By the way,
- 9:20Speaker 4: even just one of those nets you put in your
- 9:22Speaker 4: backyard and hit into, that would have been.
- 9:24Speaker 2: As good as me. No, no, no, no, no. This
- 9:27Speaker 2: is way better than.
- 9:28Speaker 4: No, it's a, by the way, Donald, it's not one
- 9:30Speaker 4: of those tiny nets that catches golf balls with a mat.
- 9:33Speaker 4: It's where they're perfect, man. That'll be, that'll be the
- 9:36Speaker 4: next surprise.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Bill, I have to tell you that I love you
- 9:39Speaker 1: so much, but one thing that really annoys me is
- 9:41Speaker 1: in my, in my social media when I'm scrolling and
- 9:44Speaker 1: I see, and I'm just posted a podcast that Donald
- 9:47Speaker 1: and I did. And I'm, I think it's funny and
- 9:49Speaker 1: I'm want to know what everyone thinks. and you weren't
- 9:52Speaker 1: on the particular one, and the first comment is, more Bill, please.
- 9:59Speaker 4: That's all this is about for me now. It means
- 10:00Speaker 4: it's working.
- 10:01Speaker 1: That's my, I really, I really hate it. I hate
- 10:04Speaker 1: it because Donald and I finally launched something successful without you.
- 10:08Speaker 1: And you're slowly infiltrating.
- 10:11Speaker 2: How could this be considered without Bill? It's a scrub.
- 10:15Speaker 1: You know what I fucking mean? It's totally, of course
- 10:18Speaker 1: with him, but we wasn't, I just think it's funny
- 10:20Speaker 1: that everywhere, like merch ideas, everyone's like, how about bill
- 10:24Speaker 1: on a hat saying five, six, seven, eight.
- 10:28Speaker 4: I'm not doing a ton of retweeting lately, but I
- 10:30Speaker 4: will say anybody that, that, tweets me and says, Bill,
- 10:35Speaker 4: I'm enjoying your podcast with Zach and Donald, I immediately
- 10:38Speaker 4: retweet that. It makes me so happy. It makes me
- 10:44Speaker 4: so happy.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I know that you love it, but the truth is
- 10:48Speaker 1: that you're very funny, and the people love Bill Lawrence.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And also, we have to say congratulations, because I don't
- 10:52Speaker 1: know if the three of you who are not Bill know, but...
- 10:55Speaker 1: His show, Ted Lasso, is a giant hit. People fucking
- 10:59Speaker 1: love it.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Thunderous applause, Dan.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Thunderous applause, Dan.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Oh, jeez.
- 11:03Speaker 4: Thank you, Zach. It was cool. By the way, it
- 11:05Speaker 4: was one of those things I wish I could have
- 11:07Speaker 4: done in America because then, you know, I love bringing
- 11:10Speaker 4: the people back onto shows that I've worked with before,
- 11:13Speaker 4: so I'd see you all. So it was such a
- 11:14Speaker 4: gift that you were in London and got to direct one, ZB.
- 11:17Speaker 4: That was super cool.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I know. I know. And if you were shooting right now,
- 11:20Speaker 1: I could be directing another one because I'm here. But
- 11:23Speaker 1: you have.
- 11:24Speaker 2: You have some of your favorites on the show already.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I didn't know you had Brett on the show, man.
- 11:30Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 11:31Speaker 4: By the way, I forgot. Donald, but the advantage, Brett
- 11:34Speaker 4: lives there. That guy, yes. You know what I mean?
- 11:37Speaker 4: Donald did a pilot with me. By the way, Donald,
- 11:42Speaker 4: this is what our life has become. It's like what
- 11:44Speaker 4: Zach used to do with girls. Zach's in London. Brett
- 11:48Speaker 4: lives in London. Brett Goldstein is a writer and producer,
- 11:53Speaker 4: and he starred in a pilot that Donald and I
- 11:56Speaker 4: did together. And he's one of the producers and stars
- 11:59Speaker 4: of Ted Lasso. He plays Roy. And I'm trying to
- 12:01Speaker 4: make Zach be friends with him. And I'm like, Zach,
- 12:03Speaker 4: you got a friend with a girlfriend your age.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Dude, you will love him.
- 12:07Speaker 2: I don't know if you've hung out with him yet.
- 12:09Speaker 2: You will love him. He is our speed.
- 12:12Speaker 1: We joked about, Donald and I joked about going on
- 12:14Speaker 1: a mandate because we had Shay on, as you know, Bill,
- 12:17Speaker 1: because you did Interrupting Bill. And we joked about wanting,
- 12:21Speaker 1: if it weren't COVID, wanting to To go out and
- 12:24Speaker 1: hang out with Shay, but we're talking about how it's
- 12:26Speaker 1: weird in your 40s to be like, how do you
- 12:29Speaker 1: start a new male friendship? It's like, hey, would you
- 12:32Speaker 1: like to go on a man date? And Bill is
- 12:35Speaker 1: trying to set me up on a man date with
- 12:36Speaker 1: Brett while I'm in London.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Dude, you should hang out with him. You guys would
- 12:40Speaker 2: laugh a lot, man, and he doesn't give a shit
- 12:41Speaker 2: that you're Zach Braff and we're on Scrubs or anything
- 12:44Speaker 2: like that.
- 12:44Speaker 1: No, I know. I already worked with him, dude. I
- 12:46Speaker 1: directed him on Ted Lasso, and he was delightful and
- 12:49Speaker 1: funny as shit.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Does he write episodes, too?
- 12:52Speaker 4: Yeah, because he's a writer first. He's another one of
- 12:56Speaker 4: those people we have to all be friends with. He
- 12:58Speaker 4: created his own show on AMC that comes out in
- 13:00Speaker 4: two months. It just got picked up for a second season.
- 13:02Speaker 4: So he's got his own show. He's starring in another one.
- 13:06Speaker 4: He wrote a big movie in the UK called Nan,
- 13:09Speaker 4: and he's got a very big podcast that he wants
- 13:12Speaker 4: you both to be on. His podcast, not to promo
- 13:15Speaker 4: it on yours, is called Films to be Buried With,
- 13:17Speaker 4: and they sometimes shoot it at the British Film Institute.
- 13:20Speaker 4: And he basically just interviews you about what movies you'd
- 13:24Speaker 4: like to be known for as your favorite. Donald, it'll
- 13:27Speaker 4: be all about Star Wars for you. When you die,
- 13:29Speaker 4: what are the movies you want your kids to see?
- 13:30Speaker 4: What movies influenced you the most and all that stuff?
- 13:32Speaker 4: He's awesome. Wow.
- 13:34Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 13:35Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I'm going to be on it because he's already hit
- 13:38Speaker 1: me up and our mandate process has begun. We are chatting.
- 13:43Speaker 1: We are chatting.
- 13:44Speaker 4: He is also, by the way, Zach, coupled up with
- 13:47Speaker 4: a younger, charismatic, stunningly beautiful and fun British woman like yourself.
- 13:52Speaker 4: I mean, it's as if you guys were– By the way, who?
- 13:55Speaker 4: Her name is Beth because they use the word fit
- 13:58Speaker 4: over there if a girl is very attractive or if
- 14:01Speaker 4: a boy is very attractive. He started calling her Fit
- 14:03Speaker 4: Beth when they first started dating, and it has somehow
- 14:06Speaker 4: stuck as her nickname. So when you call him up,
- 14:09Speaker 4: you'd be like, hey, what are you up to? He's like, oh,
- 14:11Speaker 4: I'm just here having dinner with Fit Beth. And I
- 14:15Speaker 4: think it's one of the all-time solid British nicknames.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Well, I'm excited to take him on a double date
- 14:19Speaker 1: with Fit Florence. Hey, we haven't started the show with
- 14:26Speaker 1: singing yet. And I think since it is your catchphrase,
- 14:29Speaker 1: you might want to do the honors.
- 14:32Speaker 4: I don't like to do it when people ask me
- 14:34Speaker 4: to do it.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Nobody's asking you, Bill. Nobody's asking you. Five, six, seven, eight.
- 14:40Speaker 2: I'm going to.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Try something new with the breakdown.
- 15:06Speaker 4: I get very excited about the breakdowns. My karma's breakdown
- 15:09Speaker 4: was fun.
- 15:09Speaker 2: You're not going to get excited about this one, Bill,
- 15:11Speaker 2: because people started freaking talking trash on the internet about... Dude,
- 15:16Speaker 2: JD does the summary of life and everything at the
- 15:19Speaker 2: end of every episode. Please just tell us what's going
- 15:22Speaker 2: on because I have no idea. Then part of me said,
- 15:26Speaker 2: it's a rewatch podcast. You've had over 10 years to
- 15:30Speaker 2: catch up and watch these episodes. So what's the problem?
- 15:34Speaker 2: And people are still beefing.
- 15:36Speaker 1: So this is actually going to be a summary of
- 15:37Speaker 1: the episode.
- 15:37Speaker 2: I just want to double check.
- 15:39Speaker 1: I just want to double check that you're a 46-year-old
- 15:41Speaker 1: man who's been in the public eye for most of
- 15:43Speaker 1: your life and some comment a guy made on the
- 15:45Speaker 1: internet upset you? Just double checking?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Absolutely, yes. And it wasn't just a guy. It's girls
- 15:52Speaker 2: and guys.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Okay, so literally probably three people?
- 15:58Speaker 2: I would say about six.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Six people have unraveled you? That's awesome.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Six people out of the half a million, over half
- 16:06Speaker 2: a million people that follow me. complained, and now.
- 16:11Speaker 1: So wait, you're saying, Donald, just so I'm clear, you're
- 16:14Speaker 1: saying that someone trolled the thing you do, and now
- 16:18Speaker 1: you're going to change it, and you're going to change
- 16:21Speaker 1: it to what?
- 16:22Speaker 2: I'm just going to give a summary of what happens
- 16:23Speaker 2: in the episode.
- 16:24Speaker 4: You know what you should do, by the way? You
- 16:27Speaker 4: know what you should do as protests once in a while?
- 16:29Speaker 4: You should just read Zach's end voiceover word for word
- 16:34Speaker 4: as Zach.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Laughter No, but Bill.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I was thinking about doing that. I was so thinking
- 16:39Speaker 2: about doing that.
- 16:40Speaker 1: At the end of the day. But Bill, as you
- 16:44Speaker 1: told us, they don't really make much sense out of context.
- 16:47Speaker 1: They're like, at the end of the day, the friends
- 16:49Speaker 1: that you have are the best friends you're ever going
- 16:51Speaker 1: to have.
- 16:52Speaker 4: And that's why you need to have friends.
- 16:55Speaker 2: You're using have a little too much, and that's bad writing, buddy.
- 16:58Speaker 2: You're losing that. You used have three times. The friends
- 17:00Speaker 2: you have are going to be the friend. At the
- 17:03Speaker 2: end of the day, the friends you have will always
- 17:05Speaker 2: be the friends you get. So be happy with what
- 17:08Speaker 2: you have obtained.
- 17:13Speaker 1: All you need is a slow motion crane shot and
- 17:16Speaker 1: a sad indie song and I got tears in my eyes.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Donald knows the system. Donald gets how it works. Come
- 17:22Speaker 4: on now.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Well, you're the one that taught me that. Actually, you're
- 17:24Speaker 2: the one that taught me that. It's no bullshit. Bill,
- 17:28Speaker 2: you're the one that taught me that. It's so bad
- 17:31Speaker 2: that I go to other jobs now and writers will
- 17:35Speaker 2: have You know, it'll say something like that. It'll be like,
- 17:38Speaker 2: we have to get out of here because we have
- 17:41Speaker 2: to find a way to, you know, do something. And
- 17:44Speaker 2: I'm like, we're saying we have to like twice. Is
- 17:47Speaker 2: there another way that we can do this?
- 17:49Speaker 4: We have to get out of here. We got to
- 17:50Speaker 4: find a way out.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Come on. I see writers look at me like, how
- 17:54Speaker 2: the fuck? And it's always like, I always want to
- 17:58Speaker 2: be like, well, you know, Legendary comedy writer Bill Lawrence
- 18:01Speaker 2: taught me this.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Oh, I like legendary. You guys can do it however
- 18:06Speaker 1: you'd like, but just so you know, Bill Lawrence chooses.
- 18:08Speaker 4: To do it this way.
- 18:12Speaker 1: All right, so if I understand this correctly, you're just
- 18:15Speaker 1: going to summarize the facts of the episode now because
- 18:17Speaker 1: you've been successfully trolled.
- 18:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 18:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Okay.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Just this one time. And I didn't know Bill was
- 18:23Speaker 2: going to be on the show. If I would have
- 18:24Speaker 2: known Bill was going to be on the show, I
- 18:25Speaker 2: would have said, fuck those guys.
- 18:26Speaker 4: Yeah, by the way, so this is what you get
- 18:29Speaker 4: when you complain, petulant recap. I like that.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Right, right. This is what you get. This is what
- 18:34Speaker 2: you get when you complain.
- 18:36Speaker 7: Ready?
- 18:37Speaker 6: One, two, three.
- 18:39Speaker 2: All right, this episode shows every level of the relationship.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Elliot and Nurse Flowers are at the end of theirs.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Jordan and Cox are at the brand new baby phase.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Turk and Carla are now engaged and are feeling the
- 18:51Speaker 2: pressure of having to follow through, and JD is single
- 18:54Speaker 2: and ready to mingle with tasty coma wife.
- 18:59Speaker 4: There you go. That's what happens in this episode.
- 19:02Speaker 1: I don't like it.
- 19:04Speaker 2: I know you don't like it.
- 19:05Speaker 4: That's what they get.
- 19:07Speaker 1: For me, I have to be honest with you, Donald.
- 19:10Speaker 1: There was something nice about you as this many years later,
- 19:14Speaker 1: looking back and seeing the episode as a whole and
- 19:17Speaker 1: giving your emotional sort of summary of it from someone
- 19:22Speaker 1: who wasn't really, to what you've said before, wasn't really
- 19:26Speaker 1: looking at it very closely at the time. And now
- 19:30Speaker 1: this many years later, you're looking back at it and
- 19:32Speaker 1: seeing something. I think that's very valuable. And I think, listen,
- 19:37Speaker 1: if you're one of the six people that successfully trolled Donald,
- 19:40Speaker 1: you can type in episodes of Scrubs 216 summary, and
- 19:45Speaker 1: you'll be the home run there.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Or go to Trevor Wiki, and he'll freaking summarize it
- 19:49Speaker 2: for you.
- 19:50Speaker 5: You.
- 19:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 19:50Speaker 2: This is what you get for being petty.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Here's what I want. Cause look, Donald and Zach can't
- 19:55Speaker 4: ask for this, but I would ask people that are
- 19:58Speaker 4: listening to that when they love Donald's old summations to
- 20:02Speaker 4: please let him know after this episode, that you loved
- 20:06Speaker 4: the way he used to do it because I found
- 20:08Speaker 4: it much more passionate and I loved hearing him talk
- 20:10Speaker 4: about it.
- 20:11Speaker 2: I like it the other way, too. I'm not going
- 20:13Speaker 2: to lie to you guys.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Yeah, so that was the only time, by the way,
- 20:16Speaker 1: no matter how long we do this podcast, that is
- 20:18Speaker 1: the only time you will ever hear Donald do a true,
- 20:21Speaker 1: boring summary of the episode. I like that you discover something, Donald,
- 20:25Speaker 1: because let's be honest, you were either on Jazz Cabbage
- 20:28Speaker 1: or playing a video game and not really paying attention
- 20:30Speaker 1: to what we were doing. So now, 20 years later,
- 20:32Speaker 1: you're looking back....
- 20:35Speaker 2: I'll tell you, you know, this episode, it really makes
- 20:39Speaker 2: you think about the relationship that you're going, that I'm
- 20:42Speaker 2: going through right now. It made me look at that.
- 20:45Speaker 2: You know what I mean? My wife and I have
- 20:47Speaker 2: surpassed every level of relationship in this episode. We've had
- 20:52Speaker 2: the kid and we, you know, they're growing now. We've
- 20:56Speaker 2: already did the beginning dates. We did the We did
- 21:00Speaker 2: the breakup and then get back together stuff. Like everything
- 21:03Speaker 2: that's happened in this episode, my wife and I have done.
- 21:06Speaker 2: And that's the one thing, because these characters are so new,
- 21:09Speaker 2: that's the one thing in this episode that is missing,
- 21:12Speaker 2: if you ask me, is the successful we've done it all.
- 21:17Speaker 2: But these guys are finding each other and getting to
- 21:19Speaker 2: know each other in my tasty coma wife. By the way.
- 21:24Speaker 1: This is a really good episode.
- 21:26Speaker 2: I laughed so many times, dude.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Bill, I'm so glad. First of all, I know that
- 21:31Speaker 1: you technically write them all because you're overseeing the writer's room,
- 21:34Speaker 1: but your name is actually on this one, along with
- 21:37Speaker 1: Adam Bernstein, who's directed the pilot. And so I was
- 21:41Speaker 1: just so happy that I happened to ask you to
- 21:43Speaker 1: come on because not only is it a great seminal
- 21:46Speaker 1: episode with a lot of great stuff in it and
- 21:49Speaker 1: very moving, I thought, at the end, But it happened
- 21:52Speaker 1: to be one with your name on the script. So
- 21:53Speaker 1: I was doubly glad you were here.
- 21:55Speaker 2: And Laverne has the best line in the show. Oh,
- 21:59Speaker 2: this is going to be a good episode. This is
- 22:00Speaker 2: going to be a good episode.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Which one? I think I wrote down that line. Oh,
- 22:06Speaker 4: good show today.
- 22:07Speaker 2: That's what she says. Good show today.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Good show today.
- 22:09Speaker 2: That's good show today.
- 22:12Speaker 4: That's it. Six words. I wrote that down. That was funny.
- 22:14Speaker 1: So the show opens up, guys, with I'm trying to
- 22:18Speaker 1: go in for a slow kiss with Rowdy. And the
- 22:22Speaker 1: audience is– the visual makes the audience go, what the
- 22:25Speaker 1: fuck is going on? And then you reveal that Donald
- 22:27Speaker 1: is coaching me because I haven't been with a woman
- 22:29Speaker 1: in a while and I'm rusty. And he's giving me
- 22:32Speaker 1: some drills, kissing drills.
- 22:34Speaker 4: You always go the wrong way. I think you always
- 22:36Speaker 4: go left or right, right? One of the two?
- 22:38Speaker 1: I always go right. I always go right.
- 22:39Speaker 4: Okay.
- 22:41Speaker 1: And I'm– basically I just wanted to say out loud
- 22:43Speaker 1: that Bill Lawrence got on television, network television– A show
- 22:48Speaker 1: that opens with a man French kissing a taxidermied dog.
- 22:55Speaker 4: That makes me so happy. You know what made me
- 22:58Speaker 4: happy about that section? I know Donald's heard it before.
- 23:01Speaker 4: I wanted Donald to tell me if it was real
- 23:02Speaker 4: or not. When you're working your rap with that dog,
- 23:05Speaker 4: I think you use your young Zach Braff sexy voice.
- 23:09Speaker 4: You know when he's like, hey, you want some kibble?
- 23:13Speaker 1: And I put my finger on his lips.
- 23:16Speaker 4: And I wanted to ask Donald if he ever heard
- 23:20Speaker 4: that sexy voice for real, if Zach tried to lay
- 23:22Speaker 4: that sexy girl, that sexy voice on people back in
- 23:24Speaker 4: the day.
- 23:25Speaker 2: No, you know, no. I've never been next to Zach
- 23:30Speaker 2: when he has laid his game down. Yeah, you've heard
- 23:34Speaker 2: me laugh.
- 23:35Speaker 3: Flirt with a woman before?
- 23:36Speaker 2: I've never heard you, I've seen you be like, I'm
- 23:39Speaker 2: going in, and then you go in, and then come
- 23:42Speaker 2: back like, oh yeah, it worked, but I've never seen,
- 23:45Speaker 2: I've never been privy to, hey girl.
- 23:48Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 23:48Speaker 2: I've never been privy to the music, you know, in
- 23:52Speaker 2: the song where the bass finally gets to talk, hey girl,
- 23:57Speaker 2: we've come to the end of the road, baby. I've
- 23:59Speaker 2: never been, I've never heard that moment with you.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Well, My, my game isn't that good, but my game
- 24:07Speaker 1: is certainly, certainly, uh, I don't have a low, uh, base.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Hey baby voice. But, um, I did, I did think
- 24:13Speaker 1: it was just, I loved, I, what I loved about
- 24:15Speaker 1: the show bill is what I'm saying is that I'm, I'm,
- 24:18Speaker 1: I'm saying in a joking way, but I just love
- 24:20Speaker 1: that how bizarre the show is that it opens like this.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And then, and then just when you think like, okay,
- 24:27Speaker 1: that was random and weird. Way later on when I
- 24:30Speaker 1: go to kiss Amy Smart, you call it back because
- 24:33Speaker 1: here Donald's like, no, man, you go right too much.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You got to go left when I'm leaning into kiss.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And then later I go to kiss Amy Smart and
- 24:38Speaker 1: she's like, ooh, you went left.
- 24:43Speaker 4: As if, by the way, anyone has ever used that
- 24:46Speaker 4: as a judgment factor for kissing, whether you went left
- 24:49Speaker 4: or right. No one has ever said that to anybody, right?
- 24:52Speaker 1: It makes me think, and if you're listening right now,
- 24:54Speaker 1: think about it. Do you have a normal way that
- 24:57Speaker 1: you lean in to make out with someone? I'm doing
- 25:00Speaker 1: it alone by myself right now. I think I probably
- 25:02Speaker 1: do normally favor left.
- 25:04Speaker 2: Do you?
- 25:05Speaker 4: I go right.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I don't know. I go right, dude.
- 25:07Speaker 8: I go right.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Joel, you go left or right?
- 25:09Speaker 4: Donald and I lock. Donald and I would lock in
- 25:11Speaker 4: well because we both go right.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Joel, you go right?
- 25:14Speaker 4: Right. It feels natural.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Daniel?
- 25:17Speaker 1: Right. Right.
- 25:18Speaker 5: Okay.
- 25:18Speaker 4: Okay.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 25:19Speaker 1: I think I might be a lefty when it comes
- 25:21Speaker 1: to the lean-in.
- 25:22Speaker 4: Well, here's my question, though. Does she go left?
- 25:25Speaker 2: Because that's the only way it works, but is if
- 25:27Speaker 2: she goes left also.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I don't know. I got to tell you, I'm going
- 25:30Speaker 1: to try later on and see what happens, but I
- 25:32Speaker 1: think I'm a lefty when it comes to that. Bill,
- 25:34Speaker 1: I couldn't help but wonder when Krista is being so
- 25:37Speaker 1: incredibly horrible to Johnny C during as they deal with
- 25:42Speaker 1: their newborn, if any of this could possibly have been
- 25:45Speaker 1: based on real life.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Yeah, dude. You guys are well aware that I was
- 25:54Speaker 4: just at this stage of having kids with Krista and
- 25:57Speaker 4: that I, without a doubt, lived in a world that
- 26:00Speaker 4: I was supposed to remove my shoes and wash my
- 26:03Speaker 4: hands even though I still wasn't allowed to hold my daughter.
- 26:08Speaker 4: And it was a lot of get out of the room,
- 26:11Speaker 4: don't make noise, turn that light off, go get me this,
- 26:14Speaker 4: go do that. So, yes. By the way, the only
- 26:16Speaker 4: thing that was different... was I was not nearly shirtless
- 26:21Speaker 4: as often as Johnny C. chose to be around his
- 26:23Speaker 4: wife and newborn. Right. Otherwise, it was supposed to be
- 26:26Speaker 4: the same.
- 26:26Speaker 1: So Johnny C. is naked. Now, when you're in the
- 26:30Speaker 1: writer's room, are you guys at this point, end of
- 26:33Speaker 1: season two, sort of laughing? Like, oh, Johnny C. loves
- 26:35Speaker 1: to be naked. Let's make him be naked and show
- 26:37Speaker 1: off his muscles?
- 26:39Speaker 4: Do you really think that we write? Johnny C shirtless or, uh,
- 26:47Speaker 4: you know, that one, that one, we did it. Yeah.
- 26:49Speaker 4: He normally decides on his own, but this one we
- 26:51Speaker 4: did script because for full disclosure, we had seen so
- 26:55Speaker 4: many scenes that we hadn't written it. Um, that we
- 26:58Speaker 4: decided to write it once and have her say, we
- 27:01Speaker 4: all get it. You love your body. Which was a
- 27:07Speaker 4: writer response.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Then he puts on a shocky, jersey. Is that a
- 27:11Speaker 1: real sports player, Shockey?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Jeremy Shockey was a tight end for the New
- 27:16Speaker 2: York Giants. He played really well for us. His football
- 27:22Speaker 2: career was short. He had a pretty short football.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Career, actually. He was really good, but then got hurt
- 27:27Speaker 4: a bunch, yeah?
- 27:28Speaker 2: Yeah, like a lot of head... He broke a lot
- 27:31Speaker 2: of bones, I think, and got his head hit. But
- 27:33Speaker 2: he was a tight end. He was like... Before Tony Gonzalez,
- 27:38Speaker 2: tight ends were... pretty much just blocking and everything like that.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And then Tony and there's.
- 27:43Speaker 4: A bunch of them now. Yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Yeah. There's a bunch of them now. And the best
- 27:50Speaker 2: one ever is by far Gronkowski. Like Gronkowski's taken everything
- 27:55Speaker 2: that all of these other tight ends have done and
- 27:57Speaker 2: turned it into a, you know, a receiver role that
- 28:00Speaker 2: is very like, it's unheard of to have a bunch
- 28:04Speaker 2: of receivers and your best receiver be your tight end.
- 28:07Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 28:09Speaker 4: Yeah, watch Zach's eyes roll back into his head when
- 28:12Speaker 4: I say, but don't you think Travis Kelsey is also
- 28:14Speaker 4: kind of coming up behind Gronk right now?
- 28:18Speaker 2: He blows his brains out.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I have a question. I have a question.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Zach, Zach, Zach, Zach, Zach, I'm sorry, but we're talking
- 28:26Speaker 4: about tight ends right now.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I literally, like JD, I swear to God, you said
- 28:32Speaker 1: tight end, and like JD, I went off and started
- 28:35Speaker 1: thinking about what I picture as a tight end. A nice,
- 28:38Speaker 1: firm bottom. And then you guys pulled me back when
- 28:41Speaker 1: you said Gronkowski, because I think I know what that
- 28:44Speaker 1: guy looks like. Can you explain to the listeners who
- 28:46Speaker 1: don't follow football, what does a tight end do?
- 28:49Speaker 2: A tight end is basically a blocker, really. It's like
- 28:54Speaker 2: somebody who is on the line and blocks for the quarterback,
- 29:00Speaker 2: but is eligible to catch the ball also if needed.
- 29:04Speaker 2: You know what I mean? So you only have a certain...
- 29:08Speaker 2: bunch of players that can actually catch the ball it's
- 29:10Speaker 2: illegal for other players to do it uh oh i
- 29:12Speaker 2: didn't know that their position right.
- 29:14Speaker 1: So you're saying not every player's allowed to catch the
- 29:16Speaker 1: ball no they have to be.
- 29:18Speaker 4: An eligible they have to be an eligible receiver sometimes
- 29:21Speaker 4: someone will have to tell the refs that on a
- 29:23Speaker 4: certain formation he is eligible like a lineman can suddenly
- 29:26Speaker 4: be eligible but not everybody can catch.
- 29:28Speaker 1: The ball i had i did not know that.
- 29:31Speaker 4: And then uh and then what donald it To make
- 29:33Speaker 4: it more interesting, what Donald and I are talking about
- 29:36Speaker 4: is the position has evolved because these guys are so big,
- 29:39Speaker 4: they're too these, the new modern tight end is too
- 29:42Speaker 4: big to be covered by a little defensive back or
- 29:45Speaker 4: the ones that cover receivers and too fast to be
- 29:48Speaker 4: covered by a big linebacker. And because these guys are
- 29:51Speaker 4: now become the kind of ultimate athletes on football teams.
- 29:54Speaker 4: These Travis Kelsey, Kelsey's and Gronk's and Tony Gonzalez's.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Right, if you have a good tight end, you are.
- 30:00Speaker 1: You got a good tight end, Donald.
- 30:03Speaker 4: There you go. Now we're back.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 30:06Speaker 8: Thank you.
- 30:07Speaker 1: Now we're back. And we're back.
- 30:09Speaker 2: But Gronkowski's come out of retirement because of.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Oh, thank God.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Yeah, dude, he's probably the most popular tight end ever
- 30:16Speaker 2: in the history of tight ends. He's a character. He's like,
- 30:19Speaker 2: I once worked out with this dude. And when I
- 30:22Speaker 2: tell you, holy shit, like the workout I was doing
- 30:26Speaker 2: was a warmup for him. You know what I mean?
- 30:28Speaker 2: And I was sweating and jumping and lifting weights and
- 30:32Speaker 2: everything like that. And it was literally a warm-up for him.
- 30:34Speaker 2: And then he went into something else after.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Let's talk about how he's decided to call me dog's names.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about these pratfalls first, though, man. Because
- 30:46Speaker 2: there are a couple of pratfalls in the opening that
- 30:48Speaker 2: are pretty dope. One, Ricky Schroeder. Rick Schroeder has a
- 30:53Speaker 2: great pratfall over the thing with the blindfold on.
- 30:56Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 30:57Speaker 2: And then you have a great pratfall.
- 30:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Epic one.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:01Speaker 3: Epic.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I even winced at myself. I was like, how did
- 31:05Speaker 1: that not hurt? Because it's definitely me doing it, and
- 31:07Speaker 1: it looked like it fucking hurt.
- 31:08Speaker 2: It looked like it really, really hurt.
- 31:11Speaker 4: And you add the noise on those, too. It seemed violent.
- 31:14Speaker 4: I liked it.
- 31:15Speaker 1: I feel like if there was a sport that was
- 31:18Speaker 1: stunt pratfalls, I could be good at it.
- 31:21Speaker 4: Well, your best pratfall of all time is with Tacey,
- 31:23Speaker 4: coma wife, either later this year or next year when
- 31:26Speaker 4: you fall down the stairs at her husband's funeral.
- 31:29Speaker 2: That's next episode, I think.
- 31:30Speaker 1: I think that's coming up.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Also, I want to give a shout out to Paige Peterson.
- 31:37Speaker 2: She's been on the show four times now, and we've
- 31:40Speaker 2: yet to talk about her. She was the nurse that said,
- 31:45Speaker 2: I'm having surgery right now, or I'm having whatever it
- 31:47Speaker 2: is right now and loving it. This is her fourth
- 31:50Speaker 2: time on the episode, and she's the one that says
- 31:52Speaker 2: to you, aren't you the one that likes to make
- 31:54Speaker 2: out with dogs right before you go into.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Wait, did you know her? How did you know her name?
- 31:58Speaker 1: Or you looked it up?
- 31:59Speaker 2: I looked it up. Oh, yeah.
- 32:01Speaker 1: That's cool.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It's good of you to give her a shout out
- 32:03Speaker 1: because she actually... She's got a lot of funny one-liners,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and she did a good job.
- 32:09Speaker 4: It's also so hard back then to have continuity and
- 32:13Speaker 4: do a network show that you're hoping that people would
- 32:16Speaker 4: see the same nurses... and doctors that don't necessarily speak
- 32:19Speaker 4: every week, but still have those people be in the
- 32:22Speaker 4: background every week, you know?
- 32:24Speaker 2: So it's cool.
- 32:24Speaker 4: And we were able to do that with somebody.
- 32:26Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 32:26Speaker 2: This is her last, I think this is her last episode, unfortunately, but.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Well, I'm hoping that's cause she went and got lots
- 32:32Speaker 4: more work somewhere else.
- 32:34Speaker 2: I believe she did. I believe she did. I believe
- 32:36Speaker 2: she did get a, another job.
- 32:37Speaker 1: She went, she's, she's, she's talented and funny and pretty.
- 32:41Speaker 1: So those are good qualities to have in Hollywood. Speaking
- 32:43Speaker 1: of which it leads to, um, a conversation about Amy Smart,
- 32:47Speaker 1: which we're going to have after this break because she
- 32:49Speaker 1: certainly is pretty and she certainly is funny and she
- 32:52Speaker 1: does a great job in this episode. So we will
- 32:53Speaker 1: be right back after these fine words.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And we're back!
- 33:00Speaker 1: And we're back. come on bill you gotta do it
- 33:12Speaker 1: at the same.
- 33:13Speaker 4: Time i gotta tell you i'm still how by the
- 33:15Speaker 4: way so what's the early verdict on interrupting bill on
- 33:17Speaker 4: that i love you guys how you guys feeling i.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Love it and i think people really like it too
- 33:21Speaker 1: oh yeah the fans love it and i felt bad
- 33:23Speaker 1: because um your your tone in the second one was
- 33:27Speaker 1: sort of melancholic and i said i don't know if
- 33:30Speaker 1: you heard the last episode but i was like i
- 33:32Speaker 1: think we may have hurt bill's feelings and the I
- 33:35Speaker 1: was like, Bill, you're allowed to go on as long
- 33:37Speaker 1: as you want. If you want to do a seven-minute monologue,
- 33:40Speaker 1: it is fine by us. The fans love you.
- 33:42Speaker 4: By the way, we didn't hurt Bill's feelings. Donald said
- 33:45Speaker 4: he was cool with it. Oh, fucking asshole. Donald said,
- 33:51Speaker 4: I'm fine. Donald said, I think the quote is, I'm
- 33:53Speaker 4: fine with it.
- 33:53Speaker 7: It's Bill.
- 33:54Speaker 4: I'm fine with it. Oh, my God. I can't remember specifically,
- 34:00Speaker 4: but I think it was exactly Zach. who said, no,
- 34:02Speaker 4: it just goes on.
- 34:03Speaker 2: And on and on and on.
- 34:04Speaker 1: No, it was great. The funny thing was, wait, the
- 34:08Speaker 1: funny thing was, on your last bit of trivia, the
- 34:10Speaker 1: answer was Elizabeth Banks, and I didn't get it at all,
- 34:12Speaker 1: but Donald knew it. And the only thing you'd recorded is, thanks, Zach,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I'm sure you're the one who got it.
- 34:18Speaker 2: It was me.
- 34:20Speaker 4: By the way, I know, but I don't expect because
- 34:23Speaker 4: of Donald's rep on the show for him to remember
- 34:25Speaker 4: this stuff, so when he does get one, I'm happily surprised.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? When Elizabeth Banks came on the show,
- 34:29Speaker 2: I thought it was the biggest deal. After watching the
- 34:34Speaker 2: 40-year-old virgin, and he goes, I'm going to put my
- 34:35Speaker 2: bicycle in your trunk, and she goes, hey-oh! When she
- 34:42Speaker 2: came on the show, I was like, I'm paying attention
- 34:44Speaker 2: to this. I want to talk about something. Before we
- 34:49Speaker 2: go forward with the Amy Smart thing, Ralphie's back on
- 34:51Speaker 2: this episode.
- 34:52Speaker 1: So funny.
- 34:53Speaker 2: And somebody said to me on the interweb, and I'm
- 34:57Speaker 2: not sure if this is true because now I didn't
- 34:59Speaker 2: remember the young man's name, but apparently Ralphie is in Shazam.
- 35:04Speaker 4: Oh, shit. Is he really? That's cool.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Apparently Ralphie's in Shazam either as one of the kids
- 35:09Speaker 2: or as the– He.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Wouldn't be a kid.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Wouldn't he have to be like 36?
- 35:16Speaker 1: This is 19 years ago. He's not a kid.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Or then as one of the superheroes.
- 35:20Speaker 4: He could be because there's a whole bunch of Shazams
- 35:23Speaker 4: at the end of Shazam.
- 35:24Speaker 2: At the end of Shazam. Spoiler alert.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Will you try and figure out, and maybe, Joel, if
- 35:29Speaker 1: you could send us in the chat a picture of
- 35:30Speaker 1: what he looks like today because I'm dying to know.
- 35:33Speaker 4: I actually saw that movie in the theaters because Zach
- 35:37Speaker 4: is the star of it. Zach plays Shazam in that.
- 35:39Speaker 1: No, no, Bill. That's a different Zach.
- 35:42Speaker 4: What?
- 35:45Speaker 1: If I was in Shazam, you guys would all have
- 35:48Speaker 1: amphibious ATVs like Kanye West just gave three chains.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Also, I don't think.
- 35:55Speaker 6: You're correct about Joey being in Shazam.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Okay, but it wasn't me that said it. Somebody said
- 35:59Speaker 2: it to me.
- 36:02Speaker 1: And that person was wrong. That's the same person that
- 36:05Speaker 1: was wrong about how brilliant your summaries of the episodes are.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you, person who said that Joey was
- 36:11Speaker 2: in Shazam. You were wrong.
- 36:14Speaker 4: You were correct about something, though. Last week, Joey was
- 36:17Speaker 4: in the gag reel, absolutely thrown into the glass door
- 36:24Speaker 4: by accident. Yeah, I remember that tossed into it.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I also remembered on the gag reel, for those of
- 36:30Speaker 1: you who'd like to go back and look at them.
- 36:32Speaker 1: And by the way, if you don't know, we sometimes
- 36:34Speaker 1: use the words interchangeably. For those of you who don't know,
- 36:37Speaker 1: a gag and blooper reel are something we cut together
- 36:41Speaker 1: at the end of every season. They're just kind of
- 36:43Speaker 1: the mistakes, funny, funny mistakes from when we're filming. And
- 36:46Speaker 1: I think they're all on YouTube. You can look up,
- 36:48Speaker 1: for example, season two scrubs. It'll either say blooper or gag.
- 36:52Speaker 1: They're kind of used interchangeably and they're very funny. And
- 36:56Speaker 1: one of the things, not only is Ralphie hitting the
- 36:58Speaker 1: door on there, but in this episode, when Donald falls
- 37:01Speaker 1: over Rowdy, do you remember this? I don't know if
- 37:05Speaker 1: a crew member was like holding up Rowdy to make
- 37:08Speaker 1: sure he didn't fall over or something.
- 37:10Speaker 4: We had Rowdy. It wasn't held up, Zach. We had
- 37:12Speaker 4: Rowdy because he had trouble standing at that point because
- 37:17Speaker 4: some of his leg strength has deteriorated. Rowdy had to
- 37:23Speaker 4: be kind of fastened.
- 37:26Speaker 1: How was Rowdy Riggs? I forgot.
- 37:30Speaker 4: Rowdy was fastened. He was kind of fastened to the
- 37:33Speaker 4: little carpeting thing there to stand upright. You know what
- 37:36Speaker 4: I mean? And the assumption was when Donald would hit
- 37:39Speaker 4: Rowdy that he would go down.
- 37:41Speaker 2: But I still couldn't. The joke is I've tripped over Rowdy,
- 37:46Speaker 2: but Rowdy couldn't fall or it didn't look right. And
- 37:49Speaker 2: so I had to pretend that I trip over Rowdy
- 37:53Speaker 2: without knocking Rowdy over.
- 37:55Speaker 4: And so we had Rowdy fastened up to stay up
- 37:58Speaker 4: as if Rowdy was solid and Donald just fell down,
- 38:01Speaker 4: not like fell on top of Rowdy.
- 38:03Speaker 1: So on the gag reel, what you'll see is that
- 38:05Speaker 1: Donald trips over Rowdy, Rowdy falls down, and then magically
- 38:10Speaker 1: pops back up.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Again.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And I remember, Donald, the whole crew started cackling. It
- 38:18Speaker 1: was so fucking funny. When I saw the gag on this,
- 38:22Speaker 1: when I saw the stunt fall on this, I went, oh,
- 38:25Speaker 1: my God, I remember that moment. And this is like
- 38:27Speaker 1: 19 years ago. That's how funny it was.
- 38:30Speaker 4: It was very disturbing, too, because it made the dog seem,
- 38:32Speaker 4: you know, like it was still.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Kind of in there slugging away. Well, Bill, what was
- 38:39Speaker 1: the story about Amy? I mean, I'm sure that I had,
- 38:43Speaker 1: if you had asked me and you had said, hey,
- 38:45Speaker 1: we need a very funny, attractive new love interest for you.
- 38:49Speaker 1: If the year was 2002, I probably was like, Amy Smart.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Because I think that, you know, she's obviously a beauty,
- 38:57Speaker 1: but I really think she's got comedic chops. And I
- 38:59Speaker 1: thought she was really, really good in this episode.
- 39:02Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's we had it randomly. You'd be surprised.
- 39:06Speaker 4: But a lot of times casting, especially if it's not
- 39:10Speaker 4: huge stock casting starts, much like Donald said about Elizabeth Banks,
- 39:15Speaker 4: who obviously is a huge star now and back there
- 39:17Speaker 4: was doing. uh, um, whatever horse movie was and Virgin,
- 39:22Speaker 4: you know, and all that stuff and just kind of
- 39:23Speaker 4: getting her career going. What was the horse movie? She was, uh,
- 39:26Speaker 4: she played Jeff Bridges, young wife. is, uh, no one
- 39:28Speaker 4: even knows. That's her. Um, the what? The horse whisperer. Nope.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Did you guys, you guys get this? It's the, Seabiscuit.
- 39:37Speaker 4: She played Jeff Bridges' young wife in that with brown hair.
- 39:39Speaker 1: And she was also in Catch Me If You Can,
- 39:41Speaker 1: I think, with Leo. I think she had a Leo... Yes.
- 39:44Speaker 2: She was also in all of the Spider-Man movies as
- 39:47Speaker 2: the secretary for J. Jameson. That's his name, right? Yeah, J.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Jonah Jameson. J.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Jonah Jameson. But the point is that sometimes casting will come,
- 39:59Speaker 4: especially when people are starting to dig the show and
- 40:01Speaker 4: will do it, from us having watched a movie... And
- 40:05Speaker 4: I think a bunch of the writers in the room
- 40:08Speaker 4: saw Road Trip because they cast both Amy Smart and
- 40:12Speaker 4: remember DJ Qualls or whatever his name, the tall kind
- 40:16Speaker 4: of dorky. They were both from Road Trip. So be like, hey,
- 40:18Speaker 4: this is a funny movie with people doing comedy. And
- 40:20Speaker 4: the cool thing was Scrubs at this point had reached
- 40:23Speaker 4: a stage that when you reached out to people like that,
- 40:26Speaker 4: if they had seen the show, like Amy was really
- 40:28Speaker 4: cool about going, yeah, I'll come to a bunch. You know, so.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Yeah. And I knew her. I knew her a little
- 40:34Speaker 1: bit through mutual friends and... Through me, dude. No, not
- 40:39Speaker 1: through you.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Through Josh Friedman, actually. Well, I've known Amy since Road Trip.
- 40:43Speaker 2: When I was doing Remember the Titan, she was doing
- 40:45Speaker 2: Road Trip. And then I did Felicity, and she was
- 40:49Speaker 2: on Felicity at the same time as I was. And
- 40:51Speaker 2: then she came and did Scrubs. So I'm pretty sure
- 40:55Speaker 2: at some point there was... it might've been Josh Radin,
- 40:59Speaker 2: but I'm pretty sure.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Yeah, but Josh was dating, Josh was dating at the
- 41:02Speaker 1: time her, Amy's best friend.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 41:06Speaker 1: A woman named Debra. And so I, anyway, I knew
- 41:09Speaker 1: her a little bit and whatever happened, happened. And she's
- 41:13Speaker 1: just great on the show. And I thought it was
- 41:14Speaker 1: very funny, Bill, the setup you wrote where you're setting
- 41:18Speaker 1: up the saddest story ever. Like her husband's in a coma.
- 41:21Speaker 1: She's been left all alone. She's a young bride. It's
- 41:24Speaker 1: so tragic. And that you're like totally leading the audience
- 41:27Speaker 1: down this, down this hole. And then it cuts to
- 41:30Speaker 1: the classic scrubs, sexy slow-mo turnaround with the wind and everything.
- 41:35Speaker 1: It was so funny.
- 41:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:36Speaker 4: I think your voice was like, also, she happens to
- 41:38Speaker 4: be incredibly hot. Everybody calls her tasty comma wife or
- 41:40Speaker 4: something like that.
- 41:41Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:41Speaker 4: I remember getting a note on a tasty comma wife
- 41:46Speaker 4: of the, I don't think it was a huge one,
- 41:49Speaker 4: but whoever covered the show from NBC thinking that was
- 41:51Speaker 4: too insensitive for not only thinking that was too insensitive for,
- 41:56Speaker 4: for everybody, you know, all the characters that you like
- 41:58Speaker 4: to call her that. But because of that note, we
- 42:02Speaker 4: wrote into the script that you were the one, your
- 42:04Speaker 4: character was the one that gave her that nickname. Remember
- 42:06Speaker 4: at the end, she's like, she's like, do people call
- 42:08Speaker 4: me tasty comma wife? And you're like, I don't know.
- 42:10Speaker 4: And she's like, I love it. And you're like, I
- 42:12Speaker 4: thought it up.
- 42:14Speaker 1: So I bet people who are listening, Bill would be
- 42:16Speaker 1: interested to know that, that, you know, you got a
- 42:19Speaker 1: hit show. As I, as it says on Scrubs Wiki,
- 42:22Speaker 1: season two was our biggest season in terms of viewership ever.
- 42:26Speaker 1: And you're still getting minutia notes like that from a network.
- 42:33Speaker 4: Yeah, but realize that it's a good thing because all
- 42:36Speaker 4: it really means is when a show's doing well, the
- 42:40Speaker 4: people that work on networks, they're there because they love TV.
- 42:43Speaker 4: That's why they're not in business. That's why they didn't
- 42:46Speaker 4: go into the financial world. And so once a show
- 42:51Speaker 4: has some heat and buzz behind it, it's even more
- 42:53Speaker 4: exciting to to try and contribute and give your two cents.
- 42:56Speaker 4: And it's never malicious. You know, wouldn't it be more
- 42:58Speaker 4: interesting if they did this? It wouldn't be cool if
- 42:59Speaker 4: they did that. And then as producers, you make the choice.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Do we let everybody feel the pride of ownership, which
- 43:06Speaker 4: we like to do on this show? Or do you
- 43:10Speaker 4: get jerky and go, Hey, now that we have leverage,
- 43:12Speaker 4: we don't have to listen to anything you say, which
- 43:14Speaker 4: I think is counterproductive because then people aren't looking to,
- 43:18Speaker 4: and you know, with us, especially with the Disney folks
- 43:20Speaker 4: who gave us notes and, you know, we loved them
- 43:24Speaker 4: feeling like they were part of the creative part of
- 43:26Speaker 4: the show. Like remember when we did the musical and
- 43:28Speaker 4: the president of Disney studios, Mark Pedowitz, like rented a
- 43:30Speaker 4: whole theater for us and had us all go watch
- 43:33Speaker 4: the musical on a big movie theater and stuff. And
- 43:36Speaker 4: that's because they felt like they were all part of it.
- 43:37Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 43:38Speaker 2: And you also, you also become friends with people in time.
- 43:41Speaker 2: You know what I mean? I've, I'm not going to lie.
- 43:44Speaker 2: I have a bunch of friends. Well, a few, I
- 43:46Speaker 2: shouldn't say a bunch. I have a few friends who,
- 43:48Speaker 2: that are actual network executives now, you know what I mean?
- 43:51Speaker 2: And work.
- 43:51Speaker 4: You guys would run into Julia Franz who helped run that,
- 43:54Speaker 4: run Disney studios all the time. And, uh, she was
- 43:56Speaker 4: such a huge, you know, um, cheerleader for the show. I,
- 43:59Speaker 4: I remember all you guys having great relationships with her.
- 44:01Speaker 1: It makes such a difference when you have an executive
- 44:04Speaker 1: who really gets it and, and campaigns for, for the show,
- 44:08Speaker 1: because I feel like these, these decisions on your life
- 44:11Speaker 1: or death are just made in, in conference rooms. I mean,
- 44:14Speaker 1: the numbers are looked at and judged and, and I'm sure, uh,
- 44:17Speaker 1: But there's also like when it's on the bubble, how
- 44:21Speaker 1: many people in the room are going, no, trust me,
- 44:23Speaker 1: just give it a chance. And as opposed to people going, eh.
- 44:28Speaker 1: And it sounds like what you're saying is also that
- 44:30Speaker 1: if you're the showrunner and you're a dick and you're
- 44:33Speaker 1: on the bubble, people are like, you know what? Fuck
- 44:34Speaker 1: that guy. No, cancel it.
- 44:36Speaker 4: You know, it's interesting. I do agree with that. I
- 44:40Speaker 4: think you have to find that fine line of standing
- 44:44Speaker 4: up for what you care about. creatively and not capitulating,
- 44:47Speaker 4: but also if people are invested in the show, why not,
- 44:51Speaker 4: you know, uh, let them feel the pride of ownership
- 44:53Speaker 4: of their work and their butts off on it. I
- 44:54Speaker 4: will say like for us, there's a absolute direct correlation
- 44:58Speaker 4: to the seventh year. I didn't care when this show
- 45:03Speaker 4: ended after we got through six years, as long as
- 45:06Speaker 4: we knew, cause I knew how I wanted the show
- 45:08Speaker 4: to end. And the seventh year, the show almost ended
- 45:11Speaker 4: without us being able to control it because of the
- 45:13Speaker 4: writer's strike. And I think it was only because how
- 45:17Speaker 4: the writers and how all you guys reacted towards Disney,
- 45:21Speaker 4: our studio, that when NBC said writer's strike and we're done,
- 45:24Speaker 4: the ABC called up and said, how do you guys
- 45:26Speaker 4: like to switch to another network and do your last season?
- 45:30Speaker 4: And I, that was one of my favorite seasons of
- 45:31Speaker 4: the show season eight. So I think that happened in
- 45:35Speaker 4: part because we considered them part of our team.
- 45:38Speaker 2: What season was it that we took? So we, our
- 45:40Speaker 2: hiatus was so long one time. No, it wasn't. It
- 45:45Speaker 2: was like almost a year.
- 45:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 45:47Speaker 4: It was season seven ended right in the early part
- 45:51Speaker 4: of the season and season eight, we decided to move
- 45:54Speaker 4: it over to ABC and there was a long gap
- 45:58Speaker 4: before we started shooting. I think it might've, it might've
- 46:01Speaker 4: been a full calendar year. It was crazy.
- 46:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I feel you reminded me that I, I felt sad.
- 46:07Speaker 1: I has a sad about the sort of medieval times episode. We,
- 46:12Speaker 1: we did. because I put so much love and work
- 46:16Speaker 1: into directing it, and you put so much love and
- 46:19Speaker 1: work into writing it, and because of what was happening
- 46:23Speaker 1: in the writer's strike, that that would have been the
- 46:24Speaker 1: series finale of Scrubs. Not only that, I feel like
- 46:28Speaker 1: that was super underappreciated, because man, that was an expensive
- 46:32Speaker 1: slash artistic slash fun episode to do, and I don't
- 46:36Speaker 1: think it ever got any love.
- 46:37Speaker 4: No, it was, and remember NBC, because there was a
- 46:41Speaker 4: strike and they didn't care about anything other than bottom
- 46:44Speaker 4: line at that point, jigg juggled the order of episodes
- 46:49Speaker 4: to air that last as if it was the season
- 46:51Speaker 4: finality and it made no sense.
- 46:53Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 46:53Speaker 1: And a lot of people were like, that's it. that's
- 46:56Speaker 1: how you're ending the show. And we're like, no, we
- 46:58Speaker 1: didn't mean to please like it still.
- 47:00Speaker 4: It was very upsetting as an homage to the princess bride, man.
- 47:03Speaker 2: It's such a great episode.
- 47:05Speaker 4: It's so cool.
- 47:06Speaker 2: Oh man.
- 47:06Speaker 1: I love that episode. And no one ever talks about it.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Whenever we like bring up conversations about what's your favorite episode,
- 47:11Speaker 1: they say the musical, they say, uh, the, the Brian
- 47:13Speaker 1: Frazier episode, you know, all the standards, but no one ever,
- 47:16Speaker 1: ever mentions that episode. And I thought it was really good.
- 47:20Speaker 4: I thought it was cool.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Slow tear.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Um, um, Can I say something that I want to,
- 47:26Speaker 4: we almost skipped passing. This one is five 21. I'm
- 47:29Speaker 4: doing a thing because it's a compliment to Donald. I loved,
- 47:33Speaker 4: cause we did a bunch of different versions over the
- 47:35Speaker 4: years and Donald might not remember, uh, uh, of when Laverne,
- 47:40Speaker 4: when a Loma would kind of break into Donald's, uh, questions.
- 47:43Speaker 4: And he would say like, you would say like, we're
- 47:46Speaker 4: only dealing with people that are invited in this one.
- 47:47Speaker 4: He says, I checked the guest list for this conversation
- 47:49Speaker 4: and you're not on it. And this one, that's it.
- 47:52Speaker 4: I didn't know what that was. So this one, at
- 47:54Speaker 4: the end, you made a noise, and I remember seeing that,
- 47:57Speaker 4: and it made me so happy because it was, you're
- 47:59Speaker 4: not on. So I don't know what ha-ha-ha means, but
- 48:03Speaker 4: it was fantastic.
- 48:04Speaker 2: Right on.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Does that mean.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Accepted and received? I don't know where that came from.
- 48:08Speaker 2: I watched it today, and I laughed my ass off.
- 48:13Speaker 1: That was funny.
- 48:14Speaker 2: I notice now, but I notice now at this point
- 48:17Speaker 2: in the show, I started getting really comfortable. You know
- 48:20Speaker 2: what I mean? If you're watching the show from the beginning,
- 48:24Speaker 2: when we started, as much as I like to think
- 48:28Speaker 2: that I knew about comedy when we started, I feel
- 48:32Speaker 2: like I was, out of everyone, the one who had
- 48:36Speaker 2: the hardest time picking up jokes. And the crazy thing
- 48:41Speaker 2: was you kept writing jokes for me and sometimes I
- 48:43Speaker 2: would nail them and sometimes I wouldn't. But I'm starting
- 48:46Speaker 2: to notice as it's going on, now I'm starting to
- 48:49Speaker 2: get comfortable with the character and it doesn't feel like...
- 48:52Speaker 2: It felt like before that I was reading it or...
- 48:56Speaker 2: I was forcing it, and now I'm just starting to relax.
- 48:59Speaker 4: Yeah, but you're just doing it. Yes, you can tell
- 49:02Speaker 4: how naturalistic you are now, but you're just harsh on
- 49:04Speaker 4: yourself the way all performers do. You were always funny, dude.
- 49:06Speaker 4: I love that you put yourself under that critical eye,
- 49:09Speaker 4: but it's not true.
- 49:10Speaker 1: No, but also one thing I'll say, Bill, to use
- 49:13Speaker 1: a sports term, is that he is in the zone
- 49:15Speaker 1: in this episode.
- 49:16Speaker 4: Yes, without a doubt.
- 49:17Speaker 1: There's lots of little riffing you're doing, Donald. You're feeling calm.
- 49:20Speaker 1: I thought you were really good in this episode.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Both doing, uh, huh, huh, huh, and the end when
- 49:26Speaker 4: he's mad at Ralphie when he says, you shut your
- 49:27Speaker 4: mouth right now! By the way, which is a surgeon
- 49:34Speaker 4: yelling at a child.
- 49:35Speaker 2: You shut your mouth right now!
- 49:37Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 49:40Speaker 4: What about Ralphie? It's an interrupting Bill moment while I'm here.
- 49:44Speaker 4: I don't know what the song is. Interrupting Bill.
- 49:49Speaker 3: Interrupting Bill.
- 49:51Speaker 4: So for real, we would occasionally have recur jokes over
- 49:54Speaker 4: the years that you were listed on the board. You
- 49:56Speaker 4: guys wouldn't recognize them because they're just tiny jokes that
- 49:59Speaker 4: we thought we would keep going. And one of Donald's
- 50:01Speaker 4: was there was four different times across the years that
- 50:05Speaker 4: Donald told Laverne that unless she got an invitation, she
- 50:09Speaker 4: should sit down. He's seen the guest list. She's not
- 50:12Speaker 4: on it. He did that to her so many times.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Do you know, and it happened at the nine-minute mark,
- 50:18Speaker 4: what a weird reoccurring joke was for you, Zach, in
- 50:23Speaker 4: reference to calling yourself the boat. Do you know what
- 50:27Speaker 4: the reoccurring joke is?
- 50:29Speaker 1: The reoccurring joke is that I– In my voiceover, I
- 50:33Speaker 1: say that I clearly want a cool nickname for myself,
- 50:37Speaker 1: and I'm always auditioning them. The Boat would be a
- 50:39Speaker 1: cool nickname.
- 50:40Speaker 4: Yes.
- 50:42Speaker 1: And then something happens, and I'm like, way to go, Boat.
- 50:46Speaker 4: If you go back and watch this series, there's eight
- 50:49Speaker 4: different times that you're trying to have a nickname, whether
- 50:52Speaker 4: it be Lion or Tiger or whatever, just catch hold.
- 50:56Speaker 4: And it never does. And one of the things they
- 50:58Speaker 4: said at the beginning of this series was, J.D. should
- 51:00Speaker 4: always wish he had a nickname and never get one.
- 51:02Speaker 1: That's funny. That's very funny. That's funny. I didn't clock
- 51:09Speaker 1: it as recurring, but I did laugh at me trying
- 51:13Speaker 1: to get my own nickname. It's funny because you can't
- 51:14Speaker 1: get your own nickname going.
- 51:16Speaker 4: No, you try so many times. I think sometimes Donald
- 51:19Speaker 4: says to you or someone says to you, no matter
- 51:21Speaker 4: how bad you want it, no one's ever going to
- 51:22Speaker 4: call you Big Cat or call you Lion or something.
- 51:25Speaker 4: That's in a different episode.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I laughed. I think I improvised this, Bill. When Amy
- 51:30Speaker 1: Smart says you have something on your cheek and I go–
- 51:33Speaker 1: Working in a hospital.
- 51:39Speaker 4: Did you make her, was that Adam or you that
- 51:41Speaker 4: made her lick you?
- 51:42Speaker 2: I was about to say, where did that come from?
- 51:45Speaker 1: No, that was aggressive. That was in the script. She's
- 51:48Speaker 1: not randomly licking me.
- 51:50Speaker 4: Well, no, I think that it, like, I'll get it,
- 51:53Speaker 4: and she does something aggressive was there, but I think
- 51:55Speaker 4: that it was probably an actress or director choice to go,
- 51:58Speaker 4: just lick it off. I mean, I think it was
- 52:00Speaker 4: probably lick your thumb and then kiss it or something.
- 52:03Speaker 1: I certainly wasn't being like, to Amy Smart, like, what
- 52:06Speaker 1: if you were to lick my face?
- 52:08Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 52:09Speaker 4: I wasn't implying, I was not implying that you were doing,
- 52:12Speaker 4: maybe instead of licking your finger and touching, you should
- 52:15Speaker 4: lick my face in this moment.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Amy, Amy, Amy, do you see on the sides how
- 52:19Speaker 1: it says she licks her thumb? What if you just
- 52:22Speaker 1: lick my face?
- 52:24Speaker 5: How about when Donald goes, when, um, Donald, when Judy
- 52:32Speaker 5: says that there's something about sleep toots, and then you
- 52:36Speaker 5: do the sound of them, what's the sound you make?
- 52:40Speaker 4: You do air first.
- 52:42Speaker 1: You go.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I always had that. I always wondered, why do farts
- 52:49Speaker 2: sound like they're asking a question? It always is.
- 53:01Speaker 4: That's so funny.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Well, I love that. And then Nurse Roberts says, like,
- 53:04Speaker 1: I make Mr. Roberts wear airtight boxers.
- 53:08Speaker 2: That's what I say to her.
- 53:09Speaker 4: That's what I say. Laverne! By the way, and she
- 53:16Speaker 4: is always contributing in your shit more than anybody's. If
- 53:19Speaker 4: she hears you talking to someone, she gets into it,
- 53:21Speaker 4: which really makes people laugh.
- 53:22Speaker 1: Let's talk about Elliot sabotaging her relationship. She's finally got
- 53:25Speaker 1: some joy. She's finally, in the last episode, she finally
- 53:29Speaker 1: said that She's happy for the first time in her life. We,
- 53:33Speaker 1: Donald and I were talking about the last episode, how
- 53:35Speaker 1: Elliot's sort of bopping around in the rare, like non-neurotic mood.
- 53:39Speaker 1: And now she's already wanting to sabotage it because she, she, she's,
- 53:43Speaker 1: I don't know. That's what she does. Right.
- 53:45Speaker 4: Well, look, this way, this will, you'll find interesting because we,
- 53:48Speaker 4: this script was easy to write because we come up
- 53:52Speaker 4: with premises ahead of time.
- 53:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:54Speaker 4: And we thought, you know, what'd be cool is, Donald
- 53:58Speaker 4: and Judy, Carl and Turk, we set up because remember
- 54:03Speaker 4: that kid had eaten a ring and gotten paid. We
- 54:06Speaker 4: knew we had to bring it back. Donald paid him
- 54:07Speaker 4: not to say anything. So we knew that was going
- 54:08Speaker 4: to be a problem. Johnny C, you know, Dr. Cox
- 54:11Speaker 4: and Jordan, you know, had to have, we didn't have
- 54:13Speaker 4: a problem for Rick and Elliot yet, but Dr. Cox
- 54:17Speaker 4: and Jordan were dealing with the kid. And usually our episodes,
- 54:20Speaker 4: everybody has to figure out how to have a solution,
- 54:23Speaker 4: you know, in, you know, how to get to the
- 54:25Speaker 4: solution of their story. In this one, we said, you
- 54:28Speaker 4: know what would be cool is we don't ever have
- 54:31Speaker 4: to do the solution if they're just all having petty
- 54:33Speaker 4: shit go on. And because JD is so alone, he
- 54:37Speaker 4: yells at them for not realizing that they got it
- 54:40Speaker 4: better than him. And that makes all their problems go away.
- 54:43Speaker 4: So you didn't even have to do the story work
- 54:45Speaker 4: at the end. Do you know what I mean? So
- 54:46Speaker 4: that's how we came up with the– the way we
- 54:48Speaker 4: came up with the Elliot and Nurse Flowers thing is
- 54:51Speaker 4: to go, what could she cause shit over just because
- 54:53Speaker 4: she's scared that she's starting to like the guy?
- 54:55Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 54:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 54:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it's clever the way you structured this because it's J.D.
- 55:01Speaker 1: who's lonesome and single who wants more than anything to
- 55:06Speaker 1: find love. I mean, jokingly, the episode opens with him
- 55:09Speaker 1: running drills on kissing because it's been so long since
- 55:12Speaker 1: he kissed anybody. And then him seeing all these relationships
- 55:17Speaker 1: in various stages, in various forms of disarray, And then
- 55:24Speaker 1: it sort of bubbles up with the monologue at the
- 55:27Speaker 1: end where I just explode. Like, how the fuck could
- 55:29Speaker 1: you guys not realize how lucky you are to be
- 55:32Speaker 1: with someone?
- 55:33Speaker 2: Well, because J.D. almost crosses a line now. You know
- 55:38Speaker 2: what I mean? He almost goes against the moral code.
- 55:43Speaker 2: This woman has a husband who's not in the ground yet.
- 55:47Speaker 2: And still, even though he's probably not going to make
- 55:51Speaker 2: it through this.
- 55:54Speaker 2: She needs to handle that first and deal with all
- 55:56Speaker 2: of that first before she goes into a relationship. And
- 56:00Speaker 2: she shows weakness and JD almost pounces on it. You
- 56:05Speaker 2: know what I mean? And so I also think the
- 56:09Speaker 2: blow up at the end was, you know, him realizing,
- 56:13Speaker 2: holy shit, I almost went there.
- 56:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 56:15Speaker 2: And these fuckers are... Right, it's his own thing, too.
- 56:18Speaker 3: You're right, you're right, you're right.
- 56:20Speaker 1: I never even saw that. That's a good point, Donald.
- 56:23Speaker 1: You know sometimes when you have your own conscience bubbling
- 56:26Speaker 1: up and you don't even know it, and he sort
- 56:27Speaker 1: of explodes on everyone else. Part of that monologue at
- 56:30Speaker 1: the end when he's just berating everyone is his own
- 56:34Speaker 1: frustration that he's got no one and he's so alone...
- 56:38Speaker 1: And now all of a sudden here's this amazing woman
- 56:40Speaker 1: who's so pretty and so into him and so in
- 56:43Speaker 1: on the joke and silly and funny. And she's like
- 56:45Speaker 1: his perfect dream girl and, and his, his conscience and
- 56:48Speaker 1: his morals make him stop it. And then they're all fighting.
- 56:52Speaker 1: And he's like, you fuckers, don't you realize how lucky
- 56:55Speaker 1: you are to have someone? I don't know. I think
- 56:57Speaker 1: that was really good. Yeah.
- 56:59Speaker 2: I wrote that down. That's the, it's an amazing blow up.
- 57:03Speaker 2: Not only you're acting at that moment, but also on,
- 57:06Speaker 2: go on.
- 57:06Speaker 1: I won't stop you.
- 57:08Speaker 2: Okay. You do a great job at it.
- 57:11Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 57:12Speaker 2: And it's very easy for the audience and our characters
- 57:17Speaker 2: to have sympathy for you after you have that moment.
- 57:20Speaker 2: You know what I mean? But it's amazing how it's
- 57:25Speaker 2: presented also. It gets to a point where the hero
- 57:30Speaker 2: of our show almost becomes a villain. and stops himself
- 57:36Speaker 2: from becoming that person. And he's going to, you know,
- 57:38Speaker 2: he's going to trade it. It comes up again later
- 57:40Speaker 2: on in the next episode.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Do you think the audience would really think him as villainous?
- 57:43Speaker 1: I mean, wouldn't they be like, oh.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Absolutely, yeah.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Really? But don't you think there'd be a certain percentage
- 57:48Speaker 1: of the audience would be like, I get it.
- 57:51Speaker 2: I'd do it. I'd do it.
- 57:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 57:52Speaker 2: Well, that's the dilemma. Would you or would you? If
- 57:56Speaker 2: somebody had somebody who was on the verge of passing
- 58:00Speaker 2: away but has not yet passed away, Would you let
- 58:02Speaker 2: that person have the moment to grieve and move on?
- 58:07Speaker 2: Or would you slide in at their weakest moment?
- 58:09Speaker 1: Well, they're also going out. But she asked him out
- 58:13Speaker 1: and they're drinking. She's weak, though.
- 58:15Speaker 4: I love this argument. This is the argument that writers
- 58:17Speaker 4: want you guys to have. You guys know that. So
- 58:20Speaker 4: much so is transporting me back. One of the things
- 58:23Speaker 4: we did in this show when we wrote it, because
- 58:25Speaker 4: Donald is correct in that. you know, we wanted people
- 58:29Speaker 4: to go to not want Zach to do this and
- 58:32Speaker 4: did not want JD to do this. And the way
- 58:35Speaker 4: that we got there was we're so lucky we have
- 58:38Speaker 4: a show of fantasies and that the actor was good.
- 58:40Speaker 4: And it wasn't my pitch, but someone's like for us
- 58:42Speaker 4: to really be down on JD doing this, the coma
- 58:46Speaker 4: husband has to speak and has to be alive in
- 58:49Speaker 4: the fantasies. And the fact that he actually was, do
- 58:52Speaker 4: you know what I mean? And the guy was good
- 58:54Speaker 4: and that you seemed, and you felt his, you know,
- 58:57Speaker 4: anguish and anger made it. Cause I think if that
- 59:01Speaker 4: guy had never spoken and was just a lifeless extra
- 59:04Speaker 4: in a bed, you would have been like, J.D. should
- 59:06Speaker 4: go for it, man. That dude's been like that for
- 59:08Speaker 4: a year. But the second he's, especially when he hands
- 59:12Speaker 4: you a chart, you know, when you walk in the
- 59:13Speaker 4: next day and you're like, ah, you know, so that
- 59:15Speaker 4: you know your conscience is killing you. You know, to me,
- 59:18Speaker 4: that's what made that show work. And it wasn't my idea.
- 59:21Speaker 4: But we argued over exactly what Donald's talking about.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Well, it is a real testament. I got to say,
- 59:26Speaker 1: it's a real testament to what you as a writer
- 59:29Speaker 1: are saying about JD's character because he's got this woman
- 59:33Speaker 1: who's being the aggressor on him and they've had drinks
- 59:36Speaker 1: and she's like, where are we going? And he's like,
- 59:39Speaker 1: I got to stop this. But then he actually goes like,
- 59:42Speaker 1: if you really want this, I'll pick you up and
- 59:46Speaker 1: run 12 miles with you right now. But I think
- 59:49Speaker 1: it'd be best if you waited. And she's like, I'll
- 59:52Speaker 1: call you. And you know, in his head, he's like, Absolutely.
- 59:57Speaker 2: You know, and what makes it such a Scrubs moment, though,
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: at the end of the blow-up, when everybody's feeling down
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: and out about themselves, in walks Nurse Roberts. Yeah. And
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: there's something.
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: By the way, remember how she used to lean forward
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: when she would do that, too? You like that?
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: All right, we're going to go to break. We're going
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: to go to break and then we have a caller
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: who's going to be very excited that Uncle Bill is here.
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: We will be right back after someone talks to.
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: You.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: And we're back.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: And we're back. And we're back.
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: And we're back. Hi, Noor.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: And we're back with Noor Khan.
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: Noor Khan.
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: Khan.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: Khan.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry to the fans.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Noor, do you get that all the time? Do you
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: get that all the time?
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: No, she doesn't. Noor, hi.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: How are you?
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: Hi.
- 1:01:12Speaker 9: Okay.
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Do you get that all the time, Noor?
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: No, no one does that. And the poor people who
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: are jogging have no earbuds left.
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: I backed up from the mic.
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: I'm going to alter it down.
- 1:01:25Speaker 10: I don't think I've ever been introduced like this ever
- 1:01:27Speaker 10: in my entire life.
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: Noor, it's very nice to meet you. Have you ever
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: seen Star Trek 2, The Wrath of Khan?
- 1:01:37Speaker 6: I'm not a Star Trek fan.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: Yes, Noor, thank you.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:01:40Speaker 6: I'm not a Star Trek fan. I'm not a Star
- 1:01:42Speaker 6: Wars fan. I'm sorry, Joel.
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Oh, my God.
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: Don't worry.
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: You're a Scrubs fan. Ladies and gentlemen, that was Noor Khan.
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: Noor Khan is done for the episode.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 1:01:55Speaker 6: I can't believe this.
- 1:01:56Speaker 9: Oh, wow.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Noor, it's so nice to meet you. Welcome to the program.
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: We have a very special episode because we have a
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: surprise guest, Bill Lawrence, the creator of the whole darn
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: thing is here. So you can ask us anything.
- 1:02:07Speaker 10: I have so much to ask you, but before I
- 1:02:09Speaker 10: get into that, I just want to, I have been
- 1:02:13Speaker 10: watching you guys for so long. I have, I think,
- 1:02:16Speaker 10: watched the series start to finish.
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: Over 30 times since 2004.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: Nora, that's almost 30 times more.
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: Than Donald's seen them.
- 1:02:35Speaker 10: So it's my happy place it's my husband's cheat code
- 1:02:41Speaker 10: to my mood so like if I'm in a bad
- 1:02:42Speaker 10: mood like you know I'm on my period and you
- 1:02:45Speaker 10: know usually you need to give women chocolate and wine
- 1:02:48Speaker 10: no you just need to put on an episode of
- 1:02:49Speaker 10: scrubs and.
- 1:02:50Speaker 6: I'm like.
- 1:02:53Speaker 10: And I hate it that he has like he knows
- 1:02:55Speaker 10: this Achilles heel of mine I hate it so much
- 1:02:58Speaker 10: but he also uses it very, very much.
- 1:03:02Speaker 4: It's ridiculous.
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: It's ridiculous.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: Donald wishes he could put on scrubs to calm down
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: his wife when she's on her period.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Listen, she don't even have to be on a period.
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: My wife just don't like me, man. I'm convinced now.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: I'm just convinced.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: I'm guessing today hasn't been the best quarantine day.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: No, the past, ever since school went back, it's been tough.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Well, I'm sure there's a lot of parents out there
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: that can relate, Donald, who can empathize with you.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: You should know, Nord, Donald pointed out while you were
- 1:03:37Speaker 4: waiting that my wife is essentially playing herself on the show.
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: So for me, I don't think pop it on. Maybe
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: Zach did. Yeah, I don't think pop it on an episode.
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: I did. I can say it.
- 1:03:51Speaker 10: She's a great character, so if that's how she is
- 1:03:55Speaker 10: in your life, you just hit the jackpot, my friend.
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Oh, you know, you would think that, and yet it's
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: also very, very scary.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Um, you know what, you know what I always think, Bill,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: I think that, and you've said a version of this,
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: but I think it's kind of, I mean, this is
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: maybe stupid to say, but the universe kind of gives
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: you who you need and you and Donald both have
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: very tough. Krista, I'll give a capital T, um, a wives,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: but they, because you guys have big personalities, they keep
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: you in check. And sometimes that's very hard. But some
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: wallflower who's going to let you do whatever you want
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: is not going to work for six months with you guys.
- 1:04:36Speaker 4: I thought you were saying that Donald and I should
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: be able to trade wives and have it be cool
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: with them. I thought that's where you were going.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Well, that's something you guys can work out.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Because I don't think it would be cool with Krista.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: I think it would be cool with Krista, but not
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: for me, just for her. She's so in love with Donald.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: It's so upsetting.
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: Well, no, Casey would be all right with it. Casey
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: would be like, what, we get a pool?
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: Yeah, Casey would be like, I'll make out with Bill
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: for a pool. Listen, I got to tell you that
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Krista does this thing that's so awkward where we're in
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: front of Bill and we're hugging. And, you know, I
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: give a standard, hey, good to see you hug. And
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: she's like, and Bill's standing right there. And she'll be like, don't, don't, don't,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: don't let it go.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: I don't like it.
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: It's so awkward. And she's doing it just to fuck
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: with Bill. And I'm sitting there with like a red face.
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: I don't like it.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: Okay, Krista. Okay, Krista, let go.
- 1:05:32Speaker 4: I don't like it. I don't like it. Nora, where
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: are you calling from?
- 1:05:36Speaker 6: I'm calling from India.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Yeah yes fake doctor's real friend all the way from
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: India baby.
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: Wow this podcast is truly global Donald it's.
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: Truly global for sure hey did you get a.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: Mug were you able to get a mug.
- 1:05:54Speaker 6: No, I actually haven't gotten around to ordering it yet.
- 1:05:56Speaker 10: Also, stuff is not coming in from the U.S.
- 1:05:59Speaker 6: Right now. They are taking forever to reach us. So
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: I'm just waiting for shit to get a little better.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: I have to say on the merch front, just as
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: a slight digression, when Donald and I started this podcast,
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: the people at iHeart said to us, and Donald and
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I don't know podcasts that much. I've listened to a few.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: He's listened to none. And they said, just so you know,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: podcast listeners really like some basic merch, a T-shirt or
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: a mug. Because you're building a community and it's sort
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: of a club and people like that stuff. And so
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: Donald and I said, okay, we'll make merch. That's cool.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: We were never in a rock band. That'll be fun
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: for us. So it's taken a long time to get
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: it up. And on the podcast, we've joked about all
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: these funny merch ideas. We put up a mug and
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: a mask and they were gone within like three hours.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: And Donald and I have now been texting, like, we
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: need to take this shit a little more seriously because
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: people are not fucking around with fucking merch. They want
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: their merch, Donald.
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: There is a lot you guys can do merch-wise.
- 1:06:59Speaker 10: I was just like, shit, if I knew this was
- 1:07:01Speaker 10: going to happen, I'd get, like, you know, a t-shirt
- 1:07:03Speaker 10: with both our faces on it or something printed before, like,
- 1:07:06Speaker 10: I got on this call.
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: But, like, I was like, damn it.
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: You look great.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: You look great.
- 1:07:14Speaker 10: I was in bed when I got the mail, and
- 1:07:16Speaker 10: I was like, oh, shit, I need to start looking
- 1:07:18Speaker 10: like a human being again.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: And I was like, ah.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: Nor just texted me, Zach. Nor just texted me.
- 1:07:24Speaker 6: It's almost 1 o'clock at night.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: Nora just texted me that the only merch she wants
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: is a 5, 6, 7, 8 Bill Lawrence thing, which
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: I think is very nice of her to have said. Hey,
- 1:07:34Speaker 4: by the way, can we promise Nora a coffee mug
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: that she doesn't have to order a coffee mug, Zach,
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: that we're going to send her a coffee mug?
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: Bill, stop giving away our shit. You're a guest on
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the show.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: If anybody would like a coffee mug, all you got
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: to do is, you don't have to pay for them.
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: All you got to do, what? I'm not supposed to
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: do this?
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: No, no, he's right. Listen, from here on out, from
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: here on out, Bill Lawrence brought up a great incentive
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: for making it onto the show. You get a mug?
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: I think you should get a mug.
- 1:08:04Speaker 10: I love this idea, and I'm loving that it's starting
- 1:08:07Speaker 10: with me, so I'm going to be expecting that.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I see Joelle sigh, not for giving away a mug,
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: but trying to get a mug to India. I see
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: Joelle holding her head like, how the fuck am I going.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: To get a mug to India right now?
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: And by the way... I think it should be a rule,
- 1:08:23Speaker 4: no matter where you're calling from, if you don't get
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: that mug within a week, then you get a second mug. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. What? Wait, what?
- 1:08:34Speaker 6: Bill, I love you so much.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: I love you so much.
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: You know it doesn't work. It's not going to work
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: when Daniel and freaking Joelle are like.
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: Hold on, no, no, no.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: And then a third mug. Well, then a third mug, Zach. Bill, Bill.
- 1:08:50Speaker 4: And then maybe like a five or a six or
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: a seven, eight mug?
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: Five, six, seven, eight?
- 1:08:54Speaker 9: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: No.
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: Dan, turn it off.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Bill, what the fuck? What, Dan?
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: No. Woo! And we're back.
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: I'm doing it right now. He thinks he can take
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: control over the show. Dan, I'm going to need the ability.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: I'm going to need the ability to be able to
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: mute Bill.
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: Are we saying your name correct, Noor?
- 1:09:20Speaker 6: Yes, you're saying it.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: All right, Noor. What do you do?
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: Oh, sorry, Zach.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: I was going to ask Noor what she does there.
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: What do you do there in India, Noor?
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: She collects mugs from fake doctors.
- 1:09:30Speaker 9: That's what I do.
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: Well, that's a bit of a loaded question.
- 1:09:35Speaker 10: But like the short version of that is I have
- 1:09:38Speaker 10: been a wedding planner for eight years. And I just
- 1:09:41Speaker 10: recently as like about four weeks ago, stepped out of
- 1:09:45Speaker 10: my company, gave the whole thing to my partner because
- 1:09:47Speaker 10: I am going to be a sustainable farmer.
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: Oh, that's very cool.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Holy shit, that's dope, dude.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: It's like the documentary. Did you watch The Biggest Little Farm?
- 1:09:57Speaker 6: Yes.
- 1:09:58Speaker 10: So my husband and I have always wanted to retire
- 1:10:02Speaker 10: on a farm and do that whole thing. And then
- 1:10:05Speaker 10: this whole COVID situation has just kind of been like,
- 1:10:08Speaker 10: why are we waiting?
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: Hmm. That's neat.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Good for you. What are you going to farm? What
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: crop are you going to farm?
- 1:10:18Speaker 10: We're actually going to do a permaculture, which is kind
- 1:10:21Speaker 10: of an ecosystem of different kinds of things together. And
- 1:10:26Speaker 10: we're also going to live on the farm away from
- 1:10:29Speaker 10: the city so that I don't have to deal with people.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: So, yeah. Noor, I missed if you said that you'd
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: seen this documentary, The Biggest Little Farm.
- 1:10:40Speaker 6: Yes, we have.
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: I love that documentary so much. And if you, if
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: you're listening and you haven't seen it, please check it out. It's,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: it's about a couple that, uh, that does a version
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: of what Noor is saying where they create a sustainable
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: farm and it's so moving and amazing. And I, I
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: really loved it.
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:10:56Speaker 10: And it was just, I think, and my husband and
- 1:10:58Speaker 10: I were in a quarantine together with like his family
- 1:11:01Speaker 10: and everything. And we were just, you know, and Bombay
- 1:11:04Speaker 10: is a very loud city and, uh, During like the
- 1:11:08Speaker 10: whole thing was so quiet and was like, we were
- 1:11:10Speaker 10: just like, oh my God, this is amazing.
- 1:11:11Speaker 6: Why can't we have this for our whole lives? And
- 1:11:13Speaker 6: that's when the conversation started. Like, you know, do you
- 1:11:15Speaker 6: really want to wait 10 years and then start? Do
- 1:11:18Speaker 6: you want to just do it now? And I was like,
- 1:11:20Speaker 6: why not?
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: Oh, well, I wish you the best of luck. That'd
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: be so awesome.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Bill, do you think you and Krista might also start
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: a sustainable farm?
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't necessarily think that's in the cards for us.
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: But man, do I think that's super. Would the sustainable
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: farm still be like a luxury Four Seasons resort? Is
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: that part of it?
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Bill, you can build a Four Seasons resort on
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: the farm.
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: I'm sure. That's really cool.
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: That is so cool.
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: Noor, go ahead if you have a question. We're ready
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: to answer.
- 1:11:53Speaker 6: So I have a few so you can stop me
- 1:11:55Speaker 6: whenever you guys are done answering.
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: Go for it.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead.
- 1:11:59Speaker 10: Okay, so I'm going to start with Bill just because
- 1:12:02Speaker 10: he's the brains behind the operation.
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: Of course.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Well, and Nora, thank you so much for enjoying my podcast.
- 1:12:08Speaker 4: It's really cool.
- 1:12:09Speaker 6: I really enjoy your podcast, Bill.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: It's amazing.
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: I was going to start with Bill.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: I was like, oh, here we go.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: I totally imagine that in season three of this podcast,
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: Donald and I are guests. You guys, as.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: Long as you guys tell me, you can come on
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: whenever you want.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: Zach and Donald.
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: I'm just going to.
- 1:12:30Speaker 4: She's going to let me know when it's going on.
- 1:12:31Speaker 4: Let's hear it, Noor. I'm ready.
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: Go ahead, Noor.
- 1:12:33Speaker 10: So if we were to pick up the show today,
- 1:12:37Speaker 10: X number of years after it has gone off the air,
- 1:12:40Speaker 10: and we had to pick up from where the boys
- 1:12:42Speaker 10: are today and the whole cast is today, where do
- 1:12:45Speaker 10: you see the show going? Do you think that they'll
- 1:12:47Speaker 10: still be at Sacred Heart? Or do you think that
- 1:12:50Speaker 10: JD and Toph would go into private practice together? Where
- 1:12:52Speaker 10: do you see the whole show going? Just because there
- 1:12:55Speaker 10: was so much... towards the end of season eight. I
- 1:12:57Speaker 10: don't consider season nine an actual season, so just letting
- 1:12:59Speaker 10: you all know that.
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: Whatever.
- 1:13:03Speaker 6: Whatever. Whatever that was.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: Nor there was only one main difference with season nine,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: as I recall.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: There were two major differences. Hold up. Both you and
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Bill were ghosts on that.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: So the magic was gone. The magic dream team.
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: I'm answering Nora's question because I want to hear Donald
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: and Zach's answer to this. So Nora, we were talking
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: a lot because everybody always asks Donald, Zach and me
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: if we're ever going to reboot the show. And what's
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: really interesting is we've always had opportunities, but everybody on
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: this show, A, works constantly because they're also super talented.
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: And B, we see each other on our own because
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: we love each other. So, you know, we haven't always
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: been driven to do, even for me getting to come
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: on this show on Zach and Donald's podcast. Yes, it's theirs.
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: For me, it's such a, a cool opportunity to see
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: two guys I love. So only recently have we been
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: starting talking about that and thinking about what it would be.
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: And with the writers, here's the question for you guys.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: I think that we think Zack and JD and Turk
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: would always be close. And we think that they would
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: always be of service and that those two were doctors
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: for life. But the one thing that we always got
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: caught up on is when you watch the finale of
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: season eight in Zack's voice, JD's voiceover says, and who's
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: to say that all these things wouldn't come true just
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: this once? And then as writers, we fight, does that
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: mean that they all came true? Or does that mean
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: that JD is hoping they came true? So that's where
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: we always start. What do you guys think? Because we
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: always started to go like, if we rebooted this, does
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: that mean that JD and Donald's kids ultimately are going
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: to end up together and married like they do in
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: the show? Does that mean that those things actually happened?
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: That was amazing. Because to me, that's the trap. Zach,
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: do you think that those things that we were showing
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: in the finale were real, or do you think they
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: were your dreams?
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: That's a question I've never been asked, and I'm semi-embarrassed
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: to admit that it gave me goosebumps on my arm.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: But I don't hold anything back from you listeners. Um,
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: I've never been asked that question, Bill. And it's a
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: great question. And I, as, as, as, as you were
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: talking about it, I, I kind of answered it automatically
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: and said, no, that was JD's fantasy of how great
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: life could be. And then I started thinking, and then
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I started thinking like, if you brought it back, it
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: might be interesting to show that things had not gone
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: that way at all. And in fact, he's, um, they,
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: they've all been separated and they were, you know, You know,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: on this podcast a lot, we talk about how we're
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: all living life and COVID aside, happy people and doing
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: the best that we can. But we always talk about
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: how we miss the community of this wonderful thing that
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: happened to us for nearly a decade. And it made
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: me think that it might be interesting that the characters
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: aren't together. They don't have that special bond. And there
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: is some reason that has to bring them together and
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: joy and community come out of bringing them back together.
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: It's always what's messed us up, bro. You go, Donald.
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: I agree with you, Zach. I think you're right. I
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: think that's a better story. Joanie Loves Chachi didn't go
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: that long. You know what I mean? That happy ending
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: of the kids... being the next generation of Turk and JD,
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: but it's the love story that, you know, Turk and
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: JD's love story is a great love story, but this
- 1:16:37Speaker 2: is the actual love story where, you know, their children
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: are together. I think that's too happy of an ending.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: What if they fucking hate each other? That would be funny.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: That's my worst.
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: Nightmare come true.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: I know. See, Nora, that's the problem is that I
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: feel like You know, people wanted, when J.D. says, who's
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: to say my fantasies couldn't come true just this once,
- 1:16:59Speaker 4: that you want to believe that that next Christmas they
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: were all together, you know, and that they stayed friends.
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: And I think people would be really... not happy in
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: a bad way if we came up on a world
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: that they were no longer in each other's lives. So
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: I think that's the tricky part of it.
- 1:17:13Speaker 6: I'd stop watching immediately. I'd stop watching immediately.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: No, you wouldn't.
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: Let me clarify what I meant then. I'm saying JD
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: and Turk are still tight. Their kids just don't get along.
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: Nobody cares about their kids.
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: Well, I was, I was saying that we can be tight,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: but separated, you know? Um, and I think that Bill,
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: you know, this Bill, you know, this better than anything.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: The audience will often say something, two things at once.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: I remember when I, when we screen tested garden state,
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: they were at the very end, we had a focus
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: group of about 20 people.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: I was there.
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: No, you weren't at this one. And they said, uh, Um,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: they said, how many of you, this was random strangers.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: And they said, how many of you feel like, um,
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: the ending was a little too pat, but you know,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: the two lovers get together in the airport. And I
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: would say like 75% of the hands went up and
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: they said, okay. Um, how many, how many of you
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: want them to be together? Every single hand went up.
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: So as a writer, you're trying and writer director, you're
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: trying to balance, like you, obviously you want to, you
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: want to make the audience happy. But you also want
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: to subvert what they think they want a little bit.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Do you know what I mean? Bill, you can speak
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: to that.
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: Well, look, I'm as proud of the writing and directing
- 1:18:29Speaker 4: I did on Garden State as I am of my podcast.
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Do you want to know? I want
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: to know another funny story just while I'm on the subject.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: So this is a story that's a total tangent. But
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: in that same test screening, now, when you test screen
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: a movie and you're a director, you have to go
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: because you have to see where the audience is laughing,
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: where they're bored, everything like that. Now you would never
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: invite an actor who's in the movie to the test
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: screen because there's going to be a focus group after
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: and you never know what they're going to say. They
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: might say they don't like that actor. You would never
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: subject an actor to that. But as a writer-director, you
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: have to be there. So there's a focus group in
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: the front row of the movie theater, 20 people lined up.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: I'm six rows back with my baseball hat down. I
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: don't want to spoil the sampling and have them know
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: that I'm there. And a girl raises her hand and
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: the moderator calls on her and she goes, look, kudos
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: to Zach Braff for pulling this off. I just don't
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: find him attractive.
- 1:19:27Speaker 2: That must have been hard.
- 1:19:31Speaker 11: And I'm sitting there, I'm sitting there like biting my fist.
- 1:19:35Speaker 11: Like this is the most, and all the producers who
- 1:19:37Speaker 11: are in the row with me, they all look over
- 1:19:40Speaker 11: at me like, oh shit, how did that feel?
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: And I'm like, not great.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: I'm going to be honest with you. That right there
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: is a hater. That's all that is, is a 100% hater.
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: True story.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: Look, look, she started the shit off with kudos to
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: Zach Braff for pulling this off. Meaning this shit is fire, dude.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: This shit is fire, but he's a ugly dude. Bullshit, dude.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: You know, it's funny though. This is, I'm just thinking
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: this out loud in real time, but this is before
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: like social media went crazy. And this was sort of
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: a live anonymous troll because she doesn't know I'm in
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: the room. And she's anonymously trolling me to the moderator.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: But I have to be there because I'm the director
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: of the fucking movie.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: How do you guys fix that in the movie? How
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: do you fix it?
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: They green screen his face.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: I don't know if you know this.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: Nor's got more questions. Oh, sorry.
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: First of all, I want to say you're such a
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: fucking dick, A. And B, we spent a hundred grand
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: and lessened my nose. We brought my nose a little in.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: I thought it was the green screen mask.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: Yeah, we shot some angles where my nose looked too big.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: We wanted to please that one fucking woman. All right.
- 1:21:05Speaker 6: Sorry, Nor.
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Nor, I'm sorry.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: No problem.
- 1:21:08Speaker 6: Okay, Zach, my next question is for you.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Finally.
- 1:21:12Speaker 10: So you've done a lot of, like, pratfalls and a
- 1:21:15Speaker 10: lot of, like, funny falls throughout the runtime of the show.
- 1:21:19Speaker 10: Which is your favorite to shoot and which is the
- 1:21:22Speaker 10: one that you thought came out best on screen?
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: That's a good question, dude.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: That's a good question. I'm going to cheat a little, Noor.
- 1:21:28Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:21:29Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: And I mean, can the Scooter one and the Wizard
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: of Oz count, Bill? I'll let you judge.
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: Yes, yes.
- 1:21:37Speaker 10: Just don't say the string line one where you end
- 1:21:40Speaker 10: up in like the garbage stuff. You've said it like
- 1:21:42Speaker 10: 20 times on this podcast.
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: Oh my God.
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: I know you like that one.
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: You know why, Noor? Because that, I don't know if
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: you know this, but Zach directed that one.
- 1:21:51Speaker 6: I do, don't we know this?
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: You don't even have to listen to the podcast.
- 1:21:57Speaker 6: I listen to the podcast religiously, and I know.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: Noor, Noor, first of all, Noor, Noor. Oh, my God. Noor,
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: you're very funny, first of all. And I love the
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: fact that you're such an avid listener that you're like,
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: please don't say the one where you zip line because
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: I've heard it 900 times. By the way, we're going
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: to be so fucked when we get deeper into this
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: series because we're only on season two and season 1.5
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: and people are already like, please don't tell that story again.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: I can't wait for that episode.
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: Anyway, anyway, nor I do love that episode, but I
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: have to say the funniest, it's technically not a pratfall,
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: I guess, but probably the funniest in Scrubs history. It's
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: what Bill always called our most expensive joke in the
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: history of Scrubs. is when the scooter goes into the
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: endless puddle in the Wizard of Oz episode, where I
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: clearly run into Julian, the underground manatee who doesn't exchange pleasantries.
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: Because it involved digging two very deep holes. They were
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: very expensive to build because the city demanded they be
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: built to code. for safety because you can't just throw
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: people in a hole that could collapse. And as a
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: director of the episode, we came up with the idea
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: that it would be a one-er, which means we did
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: this elaborate thing where the stuntman is riding the scooter
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: with his helmet on into the first puddle. The camera
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: keeps panning. They weren't really connected underground, obviously, but it
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: pans to the second puddle where I was hiding out underwater.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: and then one of the crew members with a hammer
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: as hard as he could banged on the asphalt so
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: I could hear it underground, which meant to pop up
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: because the camera was on me. And it was very elaborate,
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: and I still think one of the funniest gags we
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: did on Scrubs. Bill, you might want to talk about it.
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: Do you know why that gag is so funny, though?
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: Because manatees seem like the happiest creatures in the ocean.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: And the fact that he wouldn't. The fact that he
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: wouldn't return pleasantries is one of the funniest things.
- 1:24:09Speaker 3: He was rude.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: He was a rude man. He was a rude man.
- 1:24:12Speaker 4: He was having a day, guys.
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: He was having a day.
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: Wait, but Bill, talk about that from the writer's room
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: because there's no way when you guys thought of that,
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: you could have possibly thought it was going to come
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: out as funny as it did. Because I think I
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: see this as one of the funniest things.
- 1:24:24Speaker 4: When we thought of it, the most fun was Randall Winston,
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: who's been on the show and is the closest thing
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: I have to a life partner besides my wife. He
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: is the line producer in charge of the budget, and
- 1:24:34Speaker 4: he came to us with the first estimates of how
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: much that joke cost. Yes, yes, look at you. And
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: he came to us with the first estimates of how
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: much that joke cost, and he said it to me
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: in a way that he obviously felt, so unfortunately we
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: won't do it. And in my head I was like, yeah,
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: it feels like we should still go for it.
- 1:24:53Speaker 8: And that was only a product of youth because– Now,
- 1:25:00Speaker 8: I think I would look at it and go, oh, man,
- 1:25:03Speaker 8: we could have, I guess, I don't know, purchased a
- 1:25:05Speaker 8: small home.
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: To give to somebody to live in for the price
- 1:25:08Speaker 4: of a joke. You know, but that's that's movie and
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: TV production. Zach, I want to give you props because
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: Nora asked one of my favorite pratfalls of all time.
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: I randomly saw it when I was searching for this episode.
- 1:25:20Speaker 4: Do you remember what you did when you were singing
- 1:25:22Speaker 4: a song you made up going, I'm feeling so good today?
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: Do you know what that one is?
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I still feel good, but nobody saw me fall.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: Yeah, so my favorite is that Zach decided to click
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: his heels, because that's very hard to do, and then
- 1:25:36Speaker 4: fall flat on his face and get back up. And
- 1:25:39Speaker 4: I've never seen, that was in a one-er as well,
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: and it looks so incredibly painful and it's so well done.
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: I would vote for that as well.
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: I want you listeners to know that I would do
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: anything to make you guys laugh. I still go to
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: the chiropractor as often as I can just because of
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: all those years.
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: We appreciate you, Zach.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: Thank you. I do it all for my fans.
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: Nora, you've got to bring a question Donald's way now.
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: Oh, sorry, Donald. Yes, I do have one.
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: I'm going to be honest with you. My favorite pratfall
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: is the one from the episode that Zach directed. I
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: hate to tell you because of what the dude does.
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: It's a stunt man that does it. But after he
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: hits the wall and how he shakes like a fish
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: in the air is one of the funniest things I've ever.
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: I remember when he did it and laughed. I was
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: there the night that happened. And I remember laughing when
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: it happened and then seeing it on camera and laughing
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: at it again. So that's true.
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: Who directed that one? Did you direct that one, Zoe?
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: I have no idea.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: You're such a dick. By the way, I do have
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: to simultaneously give a shout out to the many stuntmen,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: the several stuntmen that did it over the years, because
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: there were certain things I definitely couldn't do or wasn't
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: allowed to do. And these guys were hilarious. And Donald
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: is right. I was not allowed to. zip line into
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: the wall and you.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: Did zip line but you didn't zip line into.
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: The wall i zipped i zipped line i wasn't allowed
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: to nail the wall what.
- 1:27:01Speaker 4: You also weren't allowed to drive an actual scooter that
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: had to be weighted down with lead so that you
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: would stay underwater in the first puddle while we went
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: over to the next puddle and you came up yeah
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: think about that that stuntman had to hold his breath
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: for the whole shot.
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: For that whole shot yeah because.
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: He had to go under with the scooter and stay under.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: No, well, technically, Bill, we panned off of him and
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: then he could come up.
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: Yeah, but not right away, Zach. Not right away.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: But I have to say, not to toot my own
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: director horn, but how many directors are directing from underwater
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: in a puddle where you can only hear with a
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: hammer on asphalt?
- 1:27:35Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: All right, Noor, should we give her one more question
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: or move on to Fix Your Life? I have one
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: more question.
- 1:27:45Speaker 10: This one is for Donald because I've always wondered this.
- 1:27:48Speaker 10: Like I said, I've watched Scrubs so many times and
- 1:27:50Speaker 10: I wanted to get Donald's perspective on this. Do you
- 1:27:52Speaker 10: wish that your character had a longer run as a
- 1:27:55Speaker 10: single on the show instead of getting into a committed
- 1:27:58Speaker 10: relationship right off the bat?
- 1:28:00Speaker 6: Considering all the hot people that came in?
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes.
- 1:28:05Speaker 6: I felt for you so much.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: Yes.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: I love that Donald has tiptoed around it and Noor
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: is just like, come on, buddy, be honest.
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: Come on, buddy.
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: Judy Reyes is a beautiful woman and the connection that
- 1:28:20Speaker 2: she and I have The chemistry that she and I
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: have is by far the best chemistry I've ever had
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: with any female on screen. By far. I can go
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: down the list and nobody has ever been on the
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: level that Judy and I were on.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Comma. Comma. Comma.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: I do, however, wish that Turk was a single for
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: a little bit. At least season one and two. At
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: least season one and two.
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: I feel for you both. No, I believe it was
- 1:28:56Speaker 4: a product of youth. And I'll say all the same
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: caveats because Judy is so good on the show and
- 1:29:01Speaker 4: so funny and talented. But I remember, and I might
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: be making this up in my head, but I remember
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: as writers telling Judy early on that Turk and Carla
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: were going to be together for the run of the show.
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: And her being like, oh, that's going to be cool
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: to have a steady relationship, to be the ones that
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: ground it, to explore what that means to meet, get married,
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: stay together, have children, to follow that whole arc. And Donald,
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: who was a young man at the time, I do
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: remember kind of telling you that and you being like, huh?
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: As Amy Smart walks by like, morning, Donald.
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: What?
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: All right. Now, you know, we have this new segment
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: since you're an avid fan of the podcast. And Bill
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: is going to join us for the first time for...
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: A new segment called Fix Your Life.
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: Noor, it's time to fix your life.
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: All right, Noor, how can we fix your life, big
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: or small? We're going to do it right now. You
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: don't need to pay for a therapist. You don't need
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: to pay for a handyman. We got it.
- 1:30:09Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:30:10Speaker 10: My cat suddenly scratches me a lot for no reason,
- 1:30:13Speaker 10: especially at night, especially if I haven't fallen asleep by
- 1:30:15Speaker 10: his bedtime.
- 1:30:16Speaker 6: How do I get him to stop doing that?
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: Okay, I could tell you this one real quick. Get
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: rid of the cat.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: You don't know how to get a cat.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: Get rid of the cat.
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: All right.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: This has been a great episode of Fix Your Life.
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: You're welcome, Noor.
- 1:30:29Speaker 10: No.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: As someone who is not a cat person and is
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: allergic to cats, just get rid of the cat.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Noor, I don't know too much about cats. I've got
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: to be honest. I'm more of a dog person, and
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: I've raised a couple puppies now, so I have some
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: experience with puppies. I do know, have you tried, now
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: with puppies, there's a canned air thing that they hate.
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: If you do that canned air noise, they're like, I
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: will never do what I just did again if you
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: promise not to make that canned air. So I would
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: try canned air. Another thing is a water gun. You
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: can sometimes, I don't, most pets do not like getting
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: blasted with a water gun to the face.
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: Also, there's a, I mean, we've made jokes about everything
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: on Scrubs, but there's also this one episode that we
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: did in which Zach goes down a zip line. And
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: I think he directed that one. You watched that? You
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: watch that on my channel.
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: I'll watch it deeply next time. Now I'm going to
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: be really in my head about mentioning that episode.
- 1:31:35Speaker 6: I mean, I love it. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:31:39Speaker 10: My only thing is that I just didn't want you
- 1:31:41Speaker 10: to say that that was your best.
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: Your favorite part.
- 1:31:45Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: I truly believe that if you want to make it
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: so the cat stops scratching you... You got to get
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: rid of that cat.
- 1:31:53Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 1:31:55Speaker 6: He's my pride and joy.
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: Donald is joking on behalf of pet lovers everywhere. You're
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: going to keep that cat and you're going to tame him.
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: You're going to tame him. Yeah, he's also a human cat.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Try the pet corrector and or a water gun. And
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: I guarantee you that we have just fixed your life.
- 1:32:15Speaker 3: Fixed your life.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: You're welcome. Thank you, guys.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 1:32:18Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: All right, Noor, it's been an extraordinarily long segment because
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: you've been so darn charming. We thank you so much
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: for coming on the show.
- 1:32:26Speaker 4: Noor, come back and report on your life. I think
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: what you're doing is so cool and interesting, and I
- 1:32:33Speaker 4: bet you these guys would love to hear it. And
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: if you do it, there's free mugs for your whole family.
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: Thank you, Gil.
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: I have 59 people in my family. I understand.
- 1:32:44Speaker 4: I understand. Just letting you know.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: Nor in a year and a half when the mug
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: that Joelle's going to put in the mail tomorrow arrives.
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: I hope you enjoy your coffee.
- 1:33:02Speaker 4: Zach, that mug is going to arrive with like. 17,000
- 1:33:06Speaker 4: absentee ballots in India.
- 1:33:08Speaker 8: Exactly.
- 1:33:09Speaker 4: One year from now.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: Too soon.
- 1:33:14Speaker 4: Sad because it's a little true.
- 1:33:16Speaker 10: Just before I go, I just want to say, Joel,
- 1:33:18Speaker 10: thank you so much. If there was no COVID, I
- 1:33:20Speaker 10: would kiss you on the mouth because I love you so.
- 1:33:21Speaker 6: Much for making this happen.
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: Oh, my God, Joelle getting propositioned.
- 1:33:26Speaker 6: Thank you. Thank you, Zach, Donald, Bill, Donald. I love
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: you guys so much.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: We love you, Noor. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: for Noor Khan.
- 1:33:35Speaker 4: Bye, Noor. Bye.
- 1:33:37Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:33:41Speaker 2: What a great movie.
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: By the way, that's the best. That is the best guest,
- 1:33:48Speaker 4: at least in the ones I've been on here for,
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: that I've gotten to be a part of. And they're
- 1:33:51Speaker 4: all so awesome. That one was cool.
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: It was amazing. By the way, not only was she
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: just fun, but she knew the show so well that
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: she was like saying, please don't reference that episode yet again.
- 1:34:05Speaker 4: Which episode?
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: You guys, it was a very special episode for me
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: because I don't know if you know this, but it
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: was the first time I got to direct. All right. Hey, Bill,
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: I know that you don't control the movement of the background.
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: That's up to the assistant directors. But I just wanted
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: you to know that at 1531, Beer Fosse is serving
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: as the pharmacist. He's behind the pharmacist's counter. Being the pharmacist,
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: and I don't recall hearing that Beard Fosse was the pharmacist.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:34:37Speaker 9: We did.
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: I mean, we cut it, but we did some things
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: that he had to cover for the pharmacist. We didn't.
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: That just shit happened. The one that made me the
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: saddest was I think I went back and watched some
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: guy mopping the air because of you guys. It really
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: upset me.
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: And also, Bill, Beard Fosse was also a patient reason.
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: Beard Fosse was the go-to for the ADs to be like,
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: it's funny that the guy was a patient, Beard Fosse.
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: And now I was drawn to the background going, hey,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: Jeff Stevenson is not the pharmacist, guys.
- 1:35:08Speaker 6: OK.
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: He's Dr.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: Beardface.
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: And as you know, by the way, did it ever
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: did anybody give you pause that his name was Beardface,
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: which he's a smart guy. He would read it as Beardface.
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: And yet he still chose to have such a big beard.
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: I just think that's such....
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: Well, he wasn't going to shave it after you gave
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: him a character, dude.
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: If in real life your name was Beardface, I would
- 1:35:34Speaker 4: think that you'd be very careful about not having a beard.
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: That's what always confuses me about that character.
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: I have to say, one of the hardest I've laughed
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: in a couple episodes, I don't know if I'm just
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: giddy tonight or what, but when Ralphie pukes in the
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: elevator on Kelso... And all you hear is Kelso go,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: good God.
- 1:35:59Speaker 4: Oh, you want to know a joke piece of trivia?
- 1:36:03Speaker 4: And it's the last little show reference I had. Other
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: than I thought, by the way, we always give props
- 1:36:07Speaker 4: to Sarah was great in this, Judy, Johnny C, Krista.
- 1:36:10Speaker 4: But I really did think Donald and Zach, it was
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: fun to come on here for this one because you
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: two both slayed it comedically in this episode. I really
- 1:36:16Speaker 4: thought so. Thank you.
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: And, Bill, since I need your approval, no matter how
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: old I get, that means a lot to me.
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: It does mean a lot to me.
- 1:36:26Speaker 4: I mean it sincerely. You guys were both funny as
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: all get out. The last bit of trivia. So comedy
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: writers always get stuck when they think they're stealing jokes
- 1:36:35Speaker 4: from themselves or jokes that they've written before. And there
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: was one in this show that because– or a rowdy
- 1:36:43Speaker 4: exists because I saw somebody– had a dead stuffed dog
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: when I was younger. I had also written about a
- 1:36:51Speaker 4: dead animal joke on Spin City, which was Richard Kine's
- 1:36:55Speaker 4: character says, because they're going to a morgue to try
- 1:37:00Speaker 4: and get a dead cat because for some weird episode.
- 1:37:05Speaker 4: And he says, turns out, you know, it's weird. I
- 1:37:09Speaker 4: went there and we got it. We put it in
- 1:37:10Speaker 4: the car and I didn't sneeze at all. It turns
- 1:37:12Speaker 4: out I'm not allergic to dead cats. And then Mike
- 1:37:15Speaker 4: Fox says, well, Mike Fox says, well, then you should
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: definitely get one. And then on this show, we then decided,
- 1:37:23Speaker 4: we fought about it for a long time, that Amy Smart,
- 1:37:25Speaker 4: do you know the joke I'm talking about, Zach? That
- 1:37:27Speaker 4: she says, perhaps you remember. I can't even finish this story.
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: The joke doesn't even get paid off because Casey's there.
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: Forget it.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: No, the joke works.
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: Casey comes in the building. The joke in this one
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: is Amy Smart says, perhaps he smells my dead dog. Yeah.
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: So we are also living in a world.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: Wait, bring her back.
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: Bring her back. I care more about... Cut that out.
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: Cut that out and bring Casey back. Casey, what's up?
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: It's about time. Thunders applause, Dan. Thunders applause. Hi, Casey.
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, I want you to finally meet the
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: Casey Cobb.
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: Hi, guys.
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: Hi.
- 1:37:57Speaker 9: Hi.
- 1:37:57Speaker 4: Casey, it's so good to see you. My wife's going
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: to be so jealous. I get to say hi to
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: you and she didn't.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 1:38:02Speaker 7: Please give her a big hug.
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: I will. I will.
- 1:38:05Speaker 7: This is what a mom slash... Housekeeper slash teacher slash
- 1:38:11Speaker 7: everything looks like.
- 1:38:14Speaker 4: You look stunning. You look beautiful. Are you happy that
- 1:38:18Speaker 4: school started or is it more and more and more
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: and more and more work?
- 1:38:22Speaker 7: I'm happy it started because the kids are excited to
- 1:38:25Speaker 7: see their friends and their new teachers. But, I mean,
- 1:38:28Speaker 7: I just came up. here to pee and this is
- 1:38:31Speaker 7: the first time I've pissed since 6 a.m. And I
- 1:38:38Speaker 7: have my pajamas on.
- 1:38:39Speaker 6: Sure.
- 1:38:42Speaker 2: Bill was saying we should wife swap.
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: Oh my God.
- 1:38:49Speaker 7: By the way, if Krista can come into this house
- 1:38:54Speaker 7: and set this one straight, I'll swap any day.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: There you go. Thunderous applause, Dan. This is the first
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: wife swap we've had.
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: Donald said you're going to make the decision based on
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: having a pool over here. He's like, she's going to
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: be like, there's a pool over there. I'll head over
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: for a few days.
- 1:39:12Speaker 7: You'll never get rid of me.
- 1:39:13Speaker 6: I will do anything.
- 1:39:16Speaker 3: Whoa!
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: All right. Well, best podcast ever.
- 1:39:20Speaker 5: I will earn my key.
- 1:39:25Speaker 4: This is what's known, Donald, as a joke backfire.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: This segment is the end of Donald and Casey's marriage,
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: brought to you by Mylanta.
- 1:39:34Speaker 6: Oh, my God.
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: No.
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:39:37Speaker 7: I just wanted to say hi. I'm being summoned, I'm sure.
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: Okay. We love you.
- 1:39:41Speaker 10: We love you.
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: We love you, Casey.
- 1:39:43Speaker 7: It's so nice to finally see you guys.
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: See you, Casey. I know. I know.
- 1:39:48Speaker 7: I'm excited to see you.
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: I think she probably gets that.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: She's never listened to the podcast ever. I listen.
- 1:39:52Speaker 7: I listen because, you know what? Donald likes to... listen
- 1:39:56Speaker 7: to it and make his edits on the loudest volume
- 1:39:58Speaker 7: possible in the main room of the house where we're
- 1:40:01Speaker 7: all sitting.
- 1:40:02Speaker 3: I hear it every week.
- 1:40:05Speaker 4: Casey, I don't listen to it all the time either,
- 1:40:07Speaker 4: but I'm going to listen to this section of this
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: one over and over and over.
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: I love you, Bill.
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: Bye, guys.
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: Take care.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I think it's good that you specified, that's Joelle and
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: that's Daniel, because that could be very confusing. We're almost done, guys.
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: She had no idea what their names were. That's why
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: I said that, because she does not listen to the podcast,
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: and she has not ever seen an episode of Scrubs.
- 1:40:39Speaker 2: I played an episode of Scrubs once for her, and
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: she got teary-eyed at the end. She was like, Scrubs
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: is like this. If I would have known this, I
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: would have been watching all these years.
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: Oh, my God.
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: Dead serious.
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: That's awesome.
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: I wanted to say that I really related to the
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: idea of the end monologue in this about the idea
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: of feeling alone even at times when there's a ton
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: of people around. I thought that was moving, Bill, and
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: I think that there's a lot of people who are
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: listening who can probably relate to that. Sometimes you're surrounded
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: by people and you still feel super alone and lonesome,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: and you're like, what's wrong with me? And I think
- 1:41:20Speaker 1: you articulate it well, especially with the visual effect, which
- 1:41:23Speaker 1: is sort of a callback to the pilot that Adam
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: Bernstein directed as well, with people moving all around JD,
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: and he's just there feeling so lonesome. And I just thought,
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: I don't know, it struck me this time as an
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: emotion and a feeling that a lot of people can
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: probably relate to and think that they were the only
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: one feeling it.
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: Well, look, man, you hit on two things. One is
- 1:41:46Speaker 4: I'm glad you gave a shout-out to Adam Bernstein because
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: he helped create the look of the show, and he
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: intentionally wanted to do a throwback to the pilot where
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: the pilot, you were overwhelmed and off on your own,
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: and the world was zipping around you, and this one,
- 1:42:00Speaker 4: you're lonely even though you're comfortable in that world and
- 1:42:03Speaker 4: all those people are around you, and he intentionally pitched
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: that to do it kind of the same thing twice
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: in a way that I thought was really cool. But more,
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: I was... struck by the emotion of this episode, not
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: in terms of being a couple, but in terms of,
- 1:42:19Speaker 4: we often talk about in the world right now, but
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: you know, empathy is a big thing.
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: And one of the things that comedy writers will often
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: talk about is joking around. We call it, don't know
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: how good you got it disease, you know, which is, Hey,
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: if you have a job, every job, even being a
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: comedy writer, which is ultimately the greatest gig in the world.
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: And I would do it for free. you still sometimes
- 1:42:43Speaker 4: have crazy hours and tough situations and you'll find yourself
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: with your coworkers complaining and saying like, oh, this part
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: of this job sucks. This part's annoying. This part sucks.
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: But then you don't ever take a moment to go,
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: holy crap, especially right now, there's a lot of comedy
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: writers that we get to keep working. You know what
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: I mean? Because we're writing shows and trying to get
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: ready in case the world ever opens up again. And
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: you don't always take the time to be empathetic towards
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: the people that don't have it as good as you.
- 1:43:11Speaker 4: And that's not only true when it comes to having
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: found the person you're meant to be with, but right
- 1:43:17Speaker 4: now in the world, man, I don't know why this
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: episode touched me so much. I feel like if people
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: could be a little more empathetic as to what other
- 1:43:25Speaker 4: folks are going through out there, that things would be
- 1:43:28Speaker 4: just a lot clearer and a lot more simple. And
- 1:43:32Speaker 4: that's why I rarely get choked up at these episodes,
- 1:43:36Speaker 4: but I got choked up at this one because– You know,
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: what I was hearing J.D. say was you fuckers are
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: so caught up in your own pettiness right now. You're
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: not really thinking about how hard it is for other people.
- 1:43:48Speaker 4: And you guys do that all the time on this
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: show and empathize and think about what's going on out there.
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: So it really touched me.
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: Yeah. And I just want to say the last thing
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: is that, you know, I think this is one of
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: the only times I explain spiking the lens to to
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: the audience about how it's usually difficult. unless it's done
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: on purpose like Ferris Bueller's Day Off where the character's
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: talking to you, it's usually something that's edited around because
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: we say there's this invisible fourth wall that's the camera
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: and we don't look into the lens because that's the
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: invisible fourth wall. This, I believe, is one of the
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: only times where you put me looking directly at the
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: audience in. I remember shooting this. I watched it and
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: I remember we did a bunch of takes where I
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: didn't look. I just kind of looked off sad. And
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: then I think I said to Adam, like, let me
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: just do one just for the fuck of it, where
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: I just look directly in the lens. And I was
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: so happy you chose it, Bill, because I, it almost
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: felt to me like at this point in the run
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: of the show, at 2.18 of the show, it almost,
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe I'm reading too much into it,
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: but my interpretation was like, I'm checking in with you,
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: the audience. I've been telling you the story for a
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: season and eight plus 18 episodes and And I'm really
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: fucking lonesome right now. And I'm doing the best that
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: I can. I can't do this all on my own,
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: quote unquote. But I'm looking at you. I don't know.
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: And you never did it. I don't think we ever
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: did it again. No, it's totally. But I thought it
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: was very moving.
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: And it's me.
- 1:45:19Speaker 1: So it's bizarre. But I was a bit caught off
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: guard by it because it's not a technique you ever
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: did again or we ever did again.
- 1:45:27Speaker 4: No, it was supposed to be you're all like me
- 1:45:29Speaker 4: because I think the world is filled of I think
- 1:45:32Speaker 4: it's very hard to be a single person and around
- 1:45:38Speaker 4: married couples and happy couples that are bitching and moaning
- 1:45:41Speaker 4: about whatever trivial thing is making their great coupleness hard.
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: You know what I mean? And so it was definitely
- 1:45:48Speaker 4: an effort to say you're– the only other time we
- 1:45:50Speaker 4: did it, you guys might not remember, is the dumbest
- 1:45:52Speaker 4: joke ever because we talked about spiking the lens was
- 1:45:56Speaker 4: we did an episode in which– You said, it doesn't
- 1:45:59Speaker 4: really matter what you think. I'm really interested in what
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: America thinks.
- 1:46:03Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: And you look directly at the camera, and then we
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: revealed a tailor on the other side, an Italian guy
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: that says, it's not America, it's Americo.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that's funny.
- 1:46:15Speaker 4: But yes, you are correct.
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: By the way, it's funny that Donald and I always
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: reference Beverly Hills Cop. Eddie Murphy was there, yeah. There's
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: a handful of times when Eddie Murphy looks directly into
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: the lens like, are you seeing this shit? And I
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: think that happens in trading places.
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: Well, not in Beverly Hills Cop. Trading places. Yeah, I
- 1:46:33Speaker 2: was about to say, it's not Beverly Hills Cop. It's
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: trading places when the Mortimers say to him, it's pork bellies,
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: which is used to make bacon, which you might find
- 1:46:43Speaker 2: in a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. And Eddie Murphy
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: looks at the camera like.
- 1:46:48Speaker 4: Eddie Murphy does one of these, don't he?
- 1:46:51Speaker 2: He looks at the camera like, what?
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: Doesn't he do it in Beverly Hills Cop or no?
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: No, no, no. Beverly Hills Cop is very much straight.
- 1:46:58Speaker 2: He never breaks the fourth wall in Beverly Hills Cop.
- 1:47:01Speaker 2: He does it in training places.
- 1:47:03Speaker 4: My favorite thing in the world is whenever you see
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: a show or a movie that has a kid that
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: is six or under. you just should go back and
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: watch the scene to see how many times they stare
- 1:47:14Speaker 4: directly at the camera. Cause they can't.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: Oh man. Ralphie at one point says the line that
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: Cox is saying, he's saying it at the exact same time.
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: He's mouthing the lines when you see, when you reveal him, it's,
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: it's yeah.
- 1:47:28Speaker 3: It's hilarious.
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: Yeah. It's good with kids. In fact, someone told me,
- 1:47:31Speaker 1: someone wrote on my social media, they wrote Zach, ever
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: since you've, um, you, you described spiking the lens to me,
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: you've ruined Degrassi high for me because the, the, the,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: They said the teen extras or the teen background performers
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: are doing it nonstop.
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: Yo, you want to see something really funny? One of
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: the biggest stars in the world right now is Will Smith, right?
- 1:47:51Speaker 2: Watch the first season of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
- 1:47:54Speaker 2: He's mouthing everyone's lines.
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: You see him doing it. You see him saying everyone's
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: lines while they're making the show.
- 1:48:04Speaker 4: And if you go back and watch that, see if
- 1:48:06Speaker 4: you can find Krista Miller playing a girl that Will
- 1:48:09Speaker 4: Smith hits on and dances with.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: I can't wait. I'm going to look for that right now.
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: As soon as this episode is done, I'm going to
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: look and see when Will Smith.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: Hits it. I think it is done, Donald. We've done it.
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: We've celebrated this really good episode. And I'm so glad
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: you were here, Bill, because it wasn't just your average episode.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: It was a particularly good one, I think.
- 1:48:36Speaker 4: Well, it means a lot to me not only to
- 1:48:37Speaker 4: see you two, but to see Daniel and Joelle, who
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: I come to enjoy spending time with. And I make
- 1:48:43Speaker 4: all my stupid jokes because I wish that this was
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: my podcast because I enjoy it. And I listen to
- 1:48:48Speaker 4: it with my giant earphones at night every Tuesday and
- 1:48:51Speaker 4: Thursday when it comes out. That's my going to bed thing.
- 1:48:54Speaker 4: I miss you both. I love seeing Casey. I love
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: seeing you four. I really appreciate getting to be involved
- 1:49:00Speaker 4: in this occasionally, guys.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: Well, we love you.
- 1:49:03Speaker 2: I love you, Bill.
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: Daniel, thanks, brother. We love you, and we love all
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: of you. Thank you so much for continuing to tune in.
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: For those of you who were so interested in the
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: merch and are pitching the funniest fucking ideas for merch
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: I've ever seen, we will get to it. Donald and
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: I are going to dedicate more bandwidth to putting up
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: merch now that we know that y'all are.
- 1:49:23Speaker 2: I'm going to be honest with you. I don't think
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: that I can get... I don't think we can get
- 1:49:27Speaker 2: iDocLeo on a shirt.
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: That's dishy. But if you love the 5, 6, 7,
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: 8 Bill Lawrence thing, I want you to tweet Zach.
- 1:49:37Speaker 4: Only Zach. Not Joel. Not Daniel.
- 1:49:40Speaker 7: Not Donald.
- 1:49:41Speaker 4: Not me. Just tweet Zach that you want it, and
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: he's going to need to hear it a lot for him.
- 1:49:47Speaker 1: You know what I'm going to make? I'm going to
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: make a t-shirt with Bill's face giant on it. And
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: it's just going to say 5, 6, 7, 8 across the.
- 1:49:54Speaker 4: Top of it. I already got some of those if
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: anybody wants one. I make them in my garage.
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: Bill's made some at home.
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: He's got a press.
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: Wait, there was something I wanted to say you just
- 1:50:05Speaker 1: reminded me of. Oh, this girl on my Twitter, she
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: sent me the funniest picture, Donald. It's Leo standing on
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: a dock and it's um i think it's from um
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: great gatsby and he's at the end of his dock
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: and there's a little rowboat and and this woman or
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: young woman wrote um i wish i was good at
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: photoshop because i would put donald in the rowboat that's
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: perfect yeah because then you can be docking leo.
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: Things that will never make it to a shirt.
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: If you're at home, you can make your own Donald
- 1:50:46Speaker 1: Docking Leo shirt. Thank you for tuning in. We really
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: appreciate you. And hey, Bill, why don't we go out
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: with another Charlotte Lawrence song? What's your favorite song that's
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: not the one we played? Since we're limited in what
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: we can play, but we can celebrate your beautiful daughter.
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: Well, look, hey, one of the cool things that Warner
- 1:51:03Speaker 4: Atlantic is doing is that they released a children's album.
- 1:51:07Speaker 4: My daughter did a song called Lavender's Blue on there.
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: It's a bunch of huge recording artists that you will
- 1:51:12Speaker 4: know doing kids' songs. It's at home with the kids.
- 1:51:18Speaker 4: And all the proceeds, 100% of the proceeds go to
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: Save the Children, which is doing amazing work in 100
- 1:51:23Speaker 4: different countries worldwide. So this will be a little kid's lullaby,
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: but it's called Lavender's Blue by Charlotte Lawrence, no relation.
- 1:51:32Speaker 9: Lavender's blue, dilly dilly, lavender's green. When I am king,
- 1:51:40Speaker 9: dilly dilly, you shall be queen. Who told you so,
- 1:51:46Speaker 9: dilly dilly, who.
- 1:51:47Speaker 6: Told you so?
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: Toss my.
- 1:52:04Speaker 9: Dilly dilly send them to work some to the plow
- 1:52:10Speaker 9: dilly dilly some to the fork some to make hay
- 1:52:16Speaker 9: dilly dilly some to cut corn while you and I
- 1:52:22Speaker 9: dilly dilly keep ourselves warm the venters If you have.
- 1:53:02Speaker 9: I love to dance, dilly dilly, I love to sing
- 1:53:08Speaker 9: When I am queen, dilly dilly, you'll be my king
- 1:53:14Speaker 9: Who told me so, dilly dilly, who told me so
- 1:53:20Speaker 9: I told myself, dilly dilly, I told myself ©
