- 0:00Speaker 1: And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord,
- 0:04Speaker 1: choose you this day whom ye will serve, whether the
- 0:07Speaker 1: gods which your fathers served that were on the side
- 0:10Speaker 1: of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites in
- 0:14Speaker 1: whose land ye dwell. But as for me and my house,
- 0:19Speaker 1: we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24.15 Thank you, Jesus,
- 0:26Speaker 1: for giving me the strength and dedication to fight until
- 0:30Speaker 1: I receive my promise like Caleb. When the moment comes
- 0:35Speaker 1: and when I'm thriving in my destiny, I will not
- 0:38Speaker 1: stop clinging to the Lord. I decree and declare that
- 0:42Speaker 1: I will stand steadfast. I decree and declare that I
- 0:46Speaker 1: will serve the Lord all the days of my life
- 0:49Speaker 1: because my greatest accomplishment is remaining close to you, Lord.
- 0:55Speaker 1: When the pleasures of this world try to entice me,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I will look at all that you have given me, Lord,
- 1:02Speaker 1: and I will reflect on all the many ways that
- 1:04Speaker 1: you've come through for me and my family. By doing so,
- 1:10Speaker 1: I know that the anchor of my heart will take
- 1:13Speaker 1: hold of you and will allow me not to be
- 1:15Speaker 1: tossed like a wave going to and fro. As for
- 1:20Speaker 1: me and my household, we will serve the Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.

- 2:06Speaker 3: Joshua's Farewell In our last story, we learned of Israel
- 2:11Speaker 3: battling against five allied armies. God sent hail from the
- 2:16Speaker 3: sky and caused the sun to stand still until Israel
- 2:20Speaker 3: prevailed over their foe. In this story, we learn about
- 2:24Speaker 3: Israel transitioning into a brief era of peace and victory.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Joshua calls for the people of Israel to stay steadfast
- 2:33Speaker 3: and obey God before departing to be with his Lord.
- 2:37Speaker 3: as inspired by the book of Joshua.

- 3:31Speaker 4: That's jackgram.org, jackgram.org. In our last episode, we learned how
- 3:39Speaker 4: God stopped time to give Joshua and his army a
- 3:41Speaker 4: miraculous victory over five kings and their armies all at once.
- 3:46Speaker 4: Joshua's immense, incredible faith in God and boldness to make
- 3:51Speaker 4: requests to God became an example for all the people
- 3:54Speaker 4: and for us generations later. In today's story, we'll hear
- 3:58Speaker 4: of a time of peace and more victories for God's
- 4:01Speaker 4: people as Joshua leads them with courage. Finally, We'll hear
- 4:05Speaker 4: this great leader's parting words for his people as he
- 4:08Speaker 4: prepares to join those who went before him in the
- 4:10Speaker 4: presence of his God. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Blood and struggle. This had marked Israel's past few years
- 4:21Speaker 3: under Joshua. Though the battles were difficult, they watched the
- 4:25Speaker 3: faithfulness of God unfold time and time again before them.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Israel's land increased each week. and it was time for
- 4:33Speaker 3: the land to be divided and given to the twelve
- 4:36Speaker 3: tribes of Israel. Luckily, Moses had guided Joshua and the
- 4:41Speaker 3: elders how to divide up the land before he had died,
- 4:44Speaker 3: so they began to allocate plots of land as instructed. Caleb,
- 4:49Speaker 3: a humble servant and soldier that was one of the
- 4:52Speaker 3: twelve spies under Moses, came to Joshua with a request.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I was forty years old when you and I first
- 4:59Speaker 3: saw the promised land as spies, Caleb said. Like you,
- 5:03Speaker 3: I did not waver or compromise. I knew from the
- 5:06Speaker 3: very beginning that God would give us the land, and
- 5:09Speaker 3: the Lord has blessed me enough to live another forty-five years,
- 5:13Speaker 3: so I may enter into it with my family. Moses
- 5:17Speaker 3: once promised me that all the land I explored would
- 5:20Speaker 3: be mine, and I have waited long to inherit it.
- 5:24Speaker 3: If you would give me the land promised to me,
- 5:27Speaker 3: I will fight to the very end to defend it. Caleb,
- 5:31Speaker 3: though 85 years of age, stood tall and strong. Joshua
- 5:36Speaker 3: looked at his dearest and closest friend and blessed him.
- 5:40Speaker 3: The two of them had seen an entire generation pass
- 5:43Speaker 3: away before getting to enter into the promised land. They
- 5:46Speaker 3: had endured hunger, war, and struggle together. Giving Caleb the
- 5:51Speaker 3: land brought joy to his soul. Caleb gathered a small
- 5:55Speaker 3: army to go and conquer the land that was promised
- 5:58Speaker 3: to him. His armor was old and stained with years
- 6:01Speaker 3: of war, but the heart it protected was filled with
- 6:04Speaker 3: new life and hope. Caleb offered his daughter's hand in
- 6:08Speaker 3: marriage to whoever would help him conquer the nearby city.
- 6:12Speaker 3: One man rose to the occasion, and he and his
- 6:15Speaker 3: wife were given the nearby springs. Caleb's family was blessed
- 6:19Speaker 3: for hundreds of generations afterwards. The armies of Israel swept
- 6:24Speaker 3: through the land of Canaan and seized what had been
- 6:26Speaker 3: promised to them. Every tribe went into their land and
- 6:30Speaker 3: dwelled there with their family. God worked with and through
- 6:34Speaker 3: his people, and their dreams for almost a hundred years
- 6:37Speaker 3: in the wilderness had been realized. Years had passed, and
- 6:42Speaker 3: Israel's blades began to collect dust in their homes. Peace
- 6:46Speaker 3: came upon Israel, like the slow and rising tide. Joshua
- 6:50Speaker 3: was old, and years of battle had worn his body.
- 6:54Speaker 3: His heart Mind and soul were preparing to depart from
- 6:58Speaker 3: the earth. Joshua gathered all the people of Israel by
- 7:01Speaker 3: his side. As Moses did before him, Joshua had a
- 7:05Speaker 3: few last commands for the people. Joshua's voice was deep
- 7:10Speaker 3: and raspy, as if it were calloused from years of
- 7:13Speaker 3: yelling in battle. Moses spoke to the people like a
- 7:16Speaker 3: shepherd did to his sheep. But Joshua spoke to them
- 7:20Speaker 3: as a general did to his beloved soldiers. He raised
- 7:23Speaker 3: his voice and said, You have all seen what God
- 7:26Speaker 3: has done for your sake. You have land for your
- 7:29Speaker 3: children to live and thrive. It stretches from sea to sea.
- 7:34Speaker 3: God will not forsake you, and he will continue to
- 7:38Speaker 3: bring your enemies to their knees before you. Be strong,
- 7:42Speaker 3: and do not waver from keeping God's commands close to
- 7:46Speaker 3: your hearts. Joshua choked up as he spoke, remembering the
- 7:50Speaker 3: tender love and care God had shown them God was
- 7:54Speaker 3: truly their conquering king, and it was an honor to
- 7:57Speaker 3: serve him. Joshua continued speaking to the people, saying, Cling
- 8:02Speaker 3: to the Lord, for our victory, our land, and our
- 8:06Speaker 3: lives are nothing without him. One man and God is
- 8:10Speaker 3: enough to destroy an army of thousands. Remember this, and
- 8:15Speaker 3: be careful not to stray. Joshua recounted the great and
- 8:20Speaker 3: mighty things God had done for Israel. For his greatest
- 8:24Speaker 3: fear was they would forget how faithful God was to them.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Without Joshua to remind them, would they truly be steadfast?
- 8:33Speaker 3: Would they remain a people that clung to their God
- 8:35Speaker 3: as Jacob once did? Time would tell, and Joshua would
- 8:40Speaker 3: not be there to find out. He looked at the
- 8:43Speaker 3: sea of faces listening to him. The children of God.
- 8:46Speaker 3: What a fickle, flawed, and faithless people they were. Yet
- 8:51Speaker 3: God loved them. He fought for them and provided for them.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Joshua smiled, feeling the same selfless love towards them. Joshua
- 9:00Speaker 3: spoke loud and clear for all to hear. There will
- 9:03Speaker 3: be many other things that desire your worship. Evil will
- 9:08Speaker 3: lurk at your doorstep, so choose. Choose this day whom
- 9:13Speaker 3: you will serve. Serve the gods of the Amorites or
- 9:16Speaker 3: the gods of Egypt. But as for me and my house,
- 9:20Speaker 3: we shall serve the Lord. A roar of applause followed
- 9:25Speaker 3: Joshua's words. The people answered Joshua, saying, It is God
- 9:29Speaker 3: who has delivered us time and time again. We will
- 9:32Speaker 3: serve the Lord, for He is our God. Joshua shook
- 9:37Speaker 3: his head, smiling. He knew they would not. He knew
- 9:41Speaker 3: that even now some of them kept idols in their tents.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Some of them lived in adultery, greed, and secrecy. You
- 9:48Speaker 3: are not able to, Joshua said, tears falling from his eyes.
- 9:54Speaker 3: The people denied it, telling him that they would be faithful.
- 9:58Speaker 3: So Joshua had them renew their covenant. with the Lord,
- 10:01Speaker 3: and they laid a stone in the sanctuary of God
- 10:03Speaker 3: as a reminder. Joshua departed from the earth at 110
- 10:08Speaker 3: years old. Joshua's unwavering warrior spirit led Israel into many victories.
- 10:14Speaker 3: Cities trembled at the name of Joshua. and entire kingdoms
- 10:18Speaker 3: raised their hands in surrender when we came. Yet Joshua's
- 10:23Speaker 3: greatest triumph was his devotion to God and his unrelenting
- 10:28Speaker 3: desire to serve his people. The people of Israel would
- 10:31Speaker 3: start well and remain faithful to God, but as Joshua's
- 10:35Speaker 3: memory faded, so would their devotion. Yet Joshua was never
- 10:40Speaker 3: the hero of their story, nor was Moses or Joseph.
- 10:45Speaker 3: It was God that was their steadfast and loyal hero,
- 10:48Speaker 3: and it would be God who would appoint deliverers to
- 10:51Speaker 3: snatch Israel from the jaws of destruction time and time again.
- 10:56Speaker 3: As Joshua breathed his last breath, the era of the
- 11:00Speaker 3: judges began.
- 11:05Speaker 4: So, we begin today's reading with more battles and more victories.
- 11:10Speaker 4: And with every victory, God's glory increased among the people,
- 11:14Speaker 4: and so did the territory that they possessed. They had
- 11:17Speaker 4: now amassed so much land that they could begin to
- 11:19Speaker 4: portion it out according to how Moses had instructed them
- 11:22Speaker 4: before he died. It's yet another step towards the fulfillment
- 11:27Speaker 4: of God's promise to his people. It all began with
- 11:30Speaker 4: Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and extended hundreds of years
- 11:34Speaker 4: into the future, into the life of Moses, and now
- 11:37Speaker 4: through Joshua. If there's ever any doubt, if God makes
- 11:41Speaker 4: good on his promises, you need only to look at
- 11:44Speaker 4: the story of his people, Israel, and the faithfulness of God,
- 11:49Speaker 4: what God showed them more and more over hundreds and
- 11:52Speaker 4: hundreds of years. Today's reading brought us back to Caleb.
- 11:57Speaker 4: Love the story of Caleb. The other spy who sided
- 12:00Speaker 4: with Joshua so many years before, God had allowed him
- 12:04Speaker 4: to live and enter the promised land as well. And
- 12:06Speaker 4: now Caleb? went to Joshua to ask for the land
- 12:09Speaker 4: that Moses had promised him. So Joshua blessed Caleb's request
- 12:14Speaker 4: and now an old man, he went into battle one
- 12:17Speaker 4: more time to conquer his territory. He said, God, give
- 12:21Speaker 4: me this mountain. And God gave him a victory and
- 12:24Speaker 4: he settled with his family, taking hold of the promise
- 12:27Speaker 4: of God. What followed in the life of Israel was
- 12:30Speaker 4: a time of relative peace. Each tribe began to settle
- 12:34Speaker 4: in and to develop their own land and their own lifestyles.
- 12:38Speaker 4: Years passed, and Joshua is now an older man. His
- 12:42Speaker 4: body is weakened by time, but his faith and his
- 12:44Speaker 4: spirit are as strong as ever. And though he knows
- 12:48Speaker 4: his last days are upon him, just as Moses did,
- 12:51Speaker 4: Joshua gathers the people. His charge echoes both Moses' words
- 12:56Speaker 4: to the people and Moses' words to Joshua. Be strong.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Be faithful. Joshua 23, 6-8 records these powerful instructions. Therefore,
- 13:08Speaker 4: be very strong to keep and to do all that
- 13:11Speaker 4: is written in the book of the law of Moses,
- 13:13Speaker 4: turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor
- 13:16Speaker 4: to the left, that you may not mix with these
- 13:19Speaker 4: nations remaining among you or make mention of the names
- 13:22Speaker 4: of their gods or swear by them or serve them
- 13:26Speaker 4: or bow down to them, but you shall cling to
- 13:29Speaker 4: the Lord your God just as you have done to
- 13:31Speaker 4: this day. Joshua had served God and the people with faith, courage,
- 13:37Speaker 4: and strength. But he also knew in all humility that
- 13:41Speaker 4: the victories were not his own, but they belonged to
- 13:44Speaker 4: the Lord. Always, the battle belongs to the Lord, and
- 13:48Speaker 4: so does the praise. And if the people were to
- 13:50Speaker 4: experience continued peace, they must stick to the laws of God,
- 13:54Speaker 4: the Ten Commandments, and the promises, the covenant that God
- 13:57Speaker 4: had made with them. This, of course, would not be easy,
- 14:01Speaker 4: as we'll see in future episodes. Ultimately, the people would
- 14:05Speaker 4: fail and fall, showing that the only true solution would
- 14:08Speaker 4: be God himself and God is able to make things
- 14:12Speaker 4: right when we do the wrong thing. We're going to
- 14:14Speaker 4: see that in coming episodes. So let's pray together. Dear God,
- 14:19Speaker 4: thank you for the example of Joshua, of his strength,
- 14:23Speaker 4: his courage, his faith, and his faithfulness. Lord, may we
- 14:27Speaker 4: also keep our eyes on you, not turning to the
- 14:30Speaker 4: things of this world or the gods of this age,
- 14:33Speaker 4: but live in the hope and the assurance and the
- 14:35Speaker 4: promise that what you have given to us is ours
- 14:38Speaker 4: to possess in Jesus Christ. May we always look to
- 14:41Speaker 4: you in humility and believe the best is yet to come.
