- 23:43:02Welcome to the City Center Podcast. I'm
- 23:43:04Gerry Marcelo. It's summertime in South
- 23:43:07Florida, which for parents means just one
- 23:43:09thing. How do you keep the kids
- 23:43:11entertained for the next couple of
- 23:43:13months? There's a simple and inexpensive
- 23:43:15solution if you're in West Palm Beach.
- 23:43:18The Mandel Public Library is your answer.
- 23:43:21We'll show you how the library is packed
- 23:43:22with fun activities for kids young and
- 23:43:24old this summer. That's next
- 23:43:26on the City Center Podcast.
- 23:43:33Joining me today is Christina Carollo,
- 23:43:36Communication Strategist for the City
- 23:43:37of West Palm Beach. Christina, welcome.
- 23:43:40Thank you for having me. Okay, now we're
- 23:43:42talking about summertime. Summertime is a
- 23:43:44time when parents are looking for ways
- 23:43:47to keep their kids entertained. When you
- 23:43:49see library, they go, "Well, okay, that's
- 23:43:51like two hours or an hour of looking at a
- 23:43:53book, and then what?" That's not the case
- 23:43:55at the Mandel Public Library, is it? No,
- 23:43:57not at all. So the library is four floors
- 23:44:00of fun, and for kids and adults, but
- 23:44:03especially the kids, on the third floor,
- 23:44:05there is a huge kids space up there. So
- 23:44:07there's books, there's toys, they have
- 23:44:09programming all summer long, every single
- 23:44:11day, every morning, they have like
- 23:44:13story times and stuff like that.
- 23:44:15Different programs like
- 23:44:16for art and whatnot. Usually
- 23:44:18they are registration based, so sometimes
- 23:44:20that's in the morning in person or maybe
- 23:44:23online, so you definitely have to check
- 23:44:24out on the website, like when that's
- 23:44:26going to be happening, but even if you
- 23:44:28just want to go in and sit in there and
- 23:44:30you know you want to cool off, like the
- 23:44:32kids can play with toys and stuff, but
- 23:44:34parents, there's computers up there, so
- 23:44:36they really wanted to
- 23:44:36sit on the computer.
- 23:44:37They could. So, well, let's break it down
- 23:44:41a little bit. So you've got four floors
- 23:44:43of good stuff there. Yes, indeed. Okay,
- 23:44:45so you went over real
- 23:44:47fast over some of the
- 23:44:47things, but just to sort of give it more
- 23:44:49detail, you have like first floor is just
- 23:44:53popular books, novels, right? Yes, so
- 23:44:56that is our popular and
- 23:44:57like new book section.
- 23:44:59Those are also where the express books
- 23:45:02are, so it's like if you're a fast
- 23:45:03reader and you can read a book in two
- 23:45:05weeks, pick them up there. If you need a
- 23:45:07lot longer like me, then the other floors
- 23:45:10are probably the best. Like the
- 23:45:11fourth floor is home to all of the most
- 23:45:15of the collection of the books. So new
- 23:45:17and popular on first floor, and then we
- 23:45:18have teens on the second floor. So even
- 23:45:21adults who enjoy young adult fiction can
- 23:45:23go into the teen section, check out a
- 23:45:25few books. It's really great. So there's
- 23:45:28great summer reading. Absolutely. What if
- 23:45:31I'm into audio? Is there like audiobooks
- 23:45:32about? Oh yeah, so you can actually get
- 23:45:34like the physical audiobooks if you want
- 23:45:36to like listen in your car kind of
- 23:45:37thing. There's like the CD versions. I
- 23:45:40don't know if they've got the tapes, it's
- 23:45:41a little old-school, but you can also do
- 23:45:43the online version. So they have plenty
- 23:45:45of like audiobooks, ebooks through like
- 23:45:47Hoopla or Cloud Library that you can
- 23:45:49access completely for free with your
- 23:45:51library card number. Well let's talk
- 23:45:53about that for just a quick session. A
- 23:45:55library card. Now, resident, you
- 23:45:57have to be a resident. So actually you
- 23:45:59don't. Oh you don't?
- 23:46:00You don't have to be a
- 23:46:00resident. Yeah, so for anyone who's
- 23:46:03living outside of West
- 23:46:04Palm Beach, we're not
- 23:46:05super sticklers. We welcome everybody. So
- 23:46:08as long as like you sign up, you have
- 23:46:09your license, you can come in and do it
- 23:46:11at the front desk on the first floor. You
- 23:46:13could do it online and it'll be mailed to
- 23:46:16you I believe, or you can pick it up in
- 23:46:17person. So if you're a Floridian and you
- 23:46:20want a library card, you can get one.
- 23:46:22That is awesome. I'm used to thinking,
- 23:46:24okay well I live in Lake Worth or I
- 23:46:26live in North Palm Beach. I can't go
- 23:46:28here. You can. You can.
- 23:46:30Yes. It's really fantastic.
- 23:46:31You're welcome to. Please do it. Also,
- 23:46:35for some people, even if you're out of
- 23:46:37state sometimes, you can get a library
- 23:46:39card. I don't know if that's a trade
- 23:46:41secret or not. But it's true. We're very
- 23:46:44welcoming to everybody because at the end
- 23:46:46of the day the goal is to get people
- 23:46:47reading and to give resources. Yeah.
- 23:46:50Because you know it's books for fun, but
- 23:46:51then it's also for education. And we have
- 23:46:53like tons, like biographies, memoirs,
- 23:46:56everything. Is there a minimum age for
- 23:46:59a kid, a child, or a student to get a
- 23:47:01book? You know? So I'm not sure by
- 23:47:04themselves what the age would be, but if
- 23:47:06they're with a
- 23:47:07parent. Okay. Yeah, I'd have
- 23:47:10to check into that. But kids can have
- 23:47:12library cards typically if they're teens,
- 23:47:13but I think that's a question for the
- 23:47:15actual librarians at the Mandel Public
- 23:47:17Library. Right. You can call them anytime
- 23:47:19and they'll be happy to answer your
- 23:47:20question. And I bet the information is
- 23:47:22probably available on the city website.
- 23:47:24Right. Yes. So go ahead.
- 23:47:26WPBCityLibrary.org.
- 23:47:29WPBCityLibrary.org. Okay, very good.
- 23:47:32Excellent. All right. So now we know we
- 23:47:34can get a card. That's fantastic. And so
- 23:47:37what we'll do is now we're wandering and
- 23:47:39we said, okay, you
- 23:47:40know, I found some good,
- 23:47:41a couple good books for me to read on the
- 23:47:43beach or for my son or daughter
- 23:47:46to read during the summertime to sort of
- 23:47:49build a book library. But there's more
- 23:47:52than just books. Tell us a little bit
- 23:47:53about what we're talking about.
- 23:47:53Absolutely. And it
- 23:47:54says it on the booklet.
- 23:47:55Okay. More than just books. Well, what is
- 23:47:57that? Tell me what that is. So this is
- 23:47:59the booklet that's put
- 23:47:59out every single month that
- 23:48:01breaks down all the programs that are
- 23:48:03happening in a month. So we have June and
- 23:48:05July here and we have some pictures that
- 23:48:08show us what happens in the library the
- 23:48:09month previous and then in here it breaks
- 23:48:12it down by floor and by section.
- 23:48:15So kids, teens, adults. Okay. Has
- 23:48:18everything. All right. So where can
- 23:48:20folks get that? So this you just go into
- 23:48:22the library and you can get it on any
- 23:48:24floor. Every desk they'll have some
- 23:48:27available right on the desk or you can
- 23:48:29get the digital copy on the library's
- 23:48:32website where you can actually flip
- 23:48:34through it like you would, you know,
- 23:48:36normally but in the digital version.
- 23:48:38Neat. Okay. So and that is like the tour
- 23:48:41guide, the itinerary
- 23:48:43for the entire summer.
- 23:48:44Absolutely. Yeah. It'll tell you
- 23:48:45everything that's going on and if you
- 23:48:47have to register or not to. And of course
- 23:48:50every single program at the library is
- 23:48:52free. So that's never an issue but
- 23:48:54sometimes they fill up really fast so
- 23:48:56they will do registration. You were
- 23:48:59talking about that earlier that
- 23:49:00obviously there's a lot of folks that are
- 23:49:02they think this is extremely
- 23:49:04great and very, very popular. So if you
- 23:49:07want to get a part of very popular
- 23:49:09programs it's smart to get there as early
- 23:49:11as possible to get registered. Is
- 23:49:13that correct? Yes. So for the kids
- 23:49:15sometimes they will have early morning
- 23:49:17registration before like story time. So
- 23:49:19you want to make sure that you're there
- 23:49:21in the window and that your name is
- 23:49:23signed up. But for other programs mostly
- 23:49:25for like adult programs even some teens
- 23:49:27if there is a registration typically you
- 23:49:30can do it online or for the art studio
- 23:49:32you can do it online as well. And that
- 23:49:34way it's secured you can even call and
- 23:49:36ask if you could be registered over the
- 23:49:38phone and then you'll get sent an email.
- 23:49:40Alright so to continue our tour of the
- 23:49:41library we talked a little bit about the
- 23:49:43first floor. Wonderful books you know
- 23:49:45reading for younger adults is fantastic.
- 23:49:48Let's move up. What's what's our next
- 23:49:49big stop as we tour the library? So if
- 23:49:52you go upstairs to the second floor that
- 23:49:54is the technology floor. It's also where
- 23:49:57you have the teen section so there's YA
- 23:49:59fiction up there and there's also a large
- 23:50:03collection of movies in the DVD
- 23:50:06format. We all remember that. So anybody
- 23:50:08who like would love to have the
- 23:50:11blockbuster experience, blockbuster date
- 23:50:14night or like if you're reminiscent you
- 23:50:16were at previous blockbusters like I was
- 23:50:18as a child. You can go and actually check
- 23:50:21out movies for free on a DVD. I'm old
- 23:50:25enough to remember when Netflix used to
- 23:50:27be a they send you a DVD. I remember that
- 23:50:31as a kid too. It's kind of like
- 23:50:32magical you put it in the DVD player
- 23:50:34usually like the bloopers are included
- 23:50:36and stuff like that. So there's
- 23:50:38definitely a magic there. Absolutely. So
- 23:50:40but that is available. Yeah so you get
- 23:50:42DVDs. Fantastic. Yeah and there is the
- 23:50:45limit is high. I think it's like
- 23:50:47past 20 DVDs at a time. I mean I don't
- 23:50:50know who's gonna be checking. You can
- 23:50:51fill a summer time with
- 23:50:52watching. Heck yeah. Wow. Good stuff and
- 23:50:56actual CDs too. So if you like listening
- 23:50:59to your music via CD you know an older
- 23:51:02cars my new car doesn't have it. You can
- 23:51:05grab a CD and it's really nice. That's
- 23:51:06fantastic. Okay so all right so we have a
- 23:51:10world of video and audio on the second
- 23:51:11floor. Yes and the Technology and
- 23:51:14Innovation Center plus the Art Studio.
- 23:51:17The second floor is a lot going on. Well
- 23:51:18tell me about this Innovation Center.
- 23:51:20What's that about? Yeah so the
- 23:51:22Technology Center, Technology and
- 23:51:24Innovation is always evolving. Right now
- 23:51:26they have like a 3D printer in there.
- 23:51:28They have a podcast studio booth where
- 23:51:32you can go in and record a podcast
- 23:51:34episode. You could
- 23:51:35record a song if you're
- 23:51:37you know can sing or if you're a musician
- 23:51:39and there is some equipment in
- 23:51:42there like a MacBook in there so you can
- 23:51:44record it. You can edit it and then save
- 23:51:47it on like a flash drive or email it to
- 23:51:49yourself or whatnot. How creative and so
- 23:51:51really neat. So there's a lot of
- 23:51:53innovative tools there for people to be
- 23:51:55creative on their own. Absolutely and
- 23:51:58they just got they have a VR headset and
- 23:52:00they just got it like a chair that you
- 23:52:02can sit in and it amplifies the
- 23:52:04experience. I haven't tried it myself but
- 23:52:06it sounds really cool. They have tons of
- 23:52:09different programming also workshops for
- 23:52:12if you want to learn you know how to do
- 23:52:14different kind of editing or digital art.
- 23:52:18There's always a one-on-one
- 23:52:19opportunity to with Eric who runs the
- 23:52:22TIC. Oh we know Eric.
- 23:52:24Eric's a good friend of
- 23:52:25ours. So there's staff there that will
- 23:52:26help you out if you don't know it right
- 23:52:28here. Okay all right. Very cool for
- 23:52:31anyone that wants to
- 23:52:33has like old movies and
- 23:52:35wants to digitize they can do that there
- 23:52:37as well like old tapes or anything and
- 23:52:40that's typically popular too or even like
- 23:52:42old photographs if you want to
- 23:52:43digitize those we have a whole station
- 23:52:46for that. Do you recommend especially
- 23:52:48things as popular like transferring video
- 23:52:50and you know to file format is
- 23:52:54that stuff that you want to go ahead and
- 23:52:55book time for can you reserve time? Yes
- 23:52:58yes you can book it ahead of time on the
- 23:53:00website or if you call the second floor
- 23:53:03the tech desk they'll be happy to block
- 23:53:05off times. Usually it's about a two-hour
- 23:53:08window but the librarians are always
- 23:53:10willing to work with you and find a time
- 23:53:12that works best for you. Wow just amazing
- 23:53:15tools at everyone's disposal. Okay so
- 23:53:18moving on what's what's on the what's are
- 23:53:20we going upstairs yet we're going to
- 23:53:21third floor? Let's stop at the art studio
- 23:53:23first and then we'll go upstairs. But
- 23:53:26yeah so the art studio is really
- 23:53:27cool too they'll have different programs
- 23:53:29all registration based. My favorite one
- 23:53:32is happy little paintings where you
- 23:53:35follow along to Bob Ross and he will
- 23:53:38teach you how to paint and it's just
- 23:53:40super fun and very nostalgic. So that
- 23:53:42one is super popular and there's other
- 23:53:44things I believe in July they have
- 23:53:47coming up a program where you can make a
- 23:53:50little bookcases as well so it's like
- 23:53:52just a little miniature very whimsical
- 23:53:54you can put it on your bookshelf. Yeah
- 23:53:56very fun stuff. I think I've seen those
- 23:53:58where it's like it's like a large
- 23:54:00book like little rectangle that has like
- 23:54:03a scene in it. It's all
- 23:54:04in a world and this one is
- 23:54:06like literally just a mini bookshelf. Oh
- 23:54:08it's like a bookshelf on your bookshelf.
- 23:54:11That's really cool. That's fantastic.
- 23:54:13Okay continue. So lots of great stuff
- 23:54:15there. Yeah so the second
- 23:54:17floor definitely check it out. There's
- 23:54:19also computers on the second floor so if
- 23:54:21you just want to go in and do anything
- 23:54:23under the Sun really if you know if
- 23:54:25reading an audio or reading an e-book you
- 23:54:28can do that. If you just want to
- 23:54:29surf the web you can do that. Some people
- 23:54:32will use it you know if they have to
- 23:54:34apply for a job they'll use the computers
- 23:54:36to do that as well. In this
- 23:54:37instance if you came there if you went
- 23:54:39there with your son or daughter you
- 23:54:42they could be lost looking at books and
- 23:54:44you can get on board and check local
- 23:54:47news or whatever you want to do. So
- 23:54:49things for the adults to do
- 23:54:50while they're at the library.
- 23:54:53Yes that's important. The library has
- 23:54:54something for everyone or even let's go
- 23:54:57back down to the first floor for a
- 23:54:59second. If you're familiar with Cilento
- 23:55:02coffee shop they have a window on the
- 23:55:04first floor so you can grab a book grab
- 23:55:07a treat maybe a little coffee sit down
- 23:55:09and enjoy both at the same time and it's
- 23:55:12really nice. You can't ask for more net.
- 23:55:15Exactly yeah especially like coffee.
- 23:55:17Either it's a really hot day and you want
- 23:55:19a nice coffee you read a book in the
- 23:55:20library or if it's raining which tends to
- 23:55:23happen during the summer get a nice
- 23:55:25hot drink and cozy up in a corner with a
- 23:55:27good book. Can't beat
- 23:55:29that. Okay definitely
- 23:55:30not. So is there anything else that we
- 23:55:33should talk about on the second floor? I
- 23:55:34think we're moving up. Okay moving on up.
- 23:55:36Yeah so we went over the third floor a
- 23:55:38little bit that's where the children's
- 23:55:39area is. Yeah.
- 23:55:40There's also the auditorium
- 23:55:42there where they have a lot of
- 23:55:43programming and different rooms there
- 23:55:46that people can actually rent out. That's
- 23:55:49all through the website you could I'm
- 23:55:51not sure of the rates or anything like
- 23:55:52that or how it works but if you ever
- 23:55:54want to rent out a room for like a
- 23:55:56lecture or something that's also
- 23:55:57available to people. And then the
- 23:56:00information is probably available on the
- 23:56:02website. Absolutely yeah and then let's
- 23:56:05go to the fourth floor. Okay now we're up
- 23:56:07to the fourth. We're up to the fourth.
- 23:56:09There's also computers up there as well
- 23:56:11for people to use. You can fax stuff up
- 23:56:14there which is cool if you need to print
- 23:56:16things it's great. There's tons of books
- 23:56:18up there and there's some of people's
- 23:56:21favorite reading spots because there's a
- 23:56:22nice big window up there too where
- 23:56:24people will sit in front of and just like
- 23:56:27curl up with their book. There's
- 23:56:28vaulted ceiling so it's really probably
- 23:56:31the most beautiful area of the library.
- 23:56:34It is actually tell a story about last
- 23:56:37year we had the opportunity to go and do
- 23:56:39a live broadcast a live broadcast from
- 23:56:42the fourth floor and it is so beautiful
- 23:56:45and so relaxing and the natural light
- 23:56:48coming through it is a fantastic place
- 23:56:50yeah to take a moment for yourself it's
- 23:56:53fantastic. Yeah yeah people love it up
- 23:56:55there it's also the quiet floor so anyone
- 23:56:57who wants silence wants to study
- 23:57:00wants to read and be at peace they can go
- 23:57:02to the fourth floor. Peace. Yes and we
- 23:57:04have the Florida room up there too which
- 23:57:06is where a lot of history is kept
- 23:57:08especially like Florida history you can
- 23:57:10go in and learn some things so that's
- 23:57:12very cool too. They really like maintain
- 23:57:15it well keep things looking sharp so if
- 23:57:18you have you know time and you want a
- 23:57:20museum like experience go to the
- 23:57:22Florida room. Yeah and the Florida room
- 23:57:23if I've been there and they have
- 23:57:26newspaper clippings getting all the way
- 23:57:29back to the turn of last century
- 23:57:31essentially and you know they have they
- 23:57:34have you know books and scrapbooks
- 23:57:37showing all the events that were
- 23:57:38happening not at this library obviously
- 23:57:40since it's relatively new but going all
- 23:57:43the way back to the other library that's
- 23:57:45now the area that we have for you know
- 23:57:49the Clamatus by Night and all those areas
- 23:57:51down there so it covers a great deal it's
- 23:57:54very very fascinating. Isn't that
- 23:57:55cool? Yeah. You can just go be a
- 23:57:57historian for a day at
- 23:57:58the library if you so choose
- 23:58:00which is very nice and then one of the
- 23:58:03coolest things especially for the
- 23:58:04summertime they have a seed library so if
- 23:58:07you're into gardening or you want to get
- 23:58:09into gardening they have this whole it's
- 23:58:12literally like catalog of seed packets
- 23:58:15there's herbs, flowers, vegetables and
- 23:58:18you can take up to six seed packets every
- 23:58:21month per patron and every Monday the
- 23:58:24first Monday of every month they add new
- 23:58:26seeds in. Wow. Yeah and there's
- 23:58:29information too about like how to grow
- 23:58:31that particular plant in the area. So it
- 23:58:33could be flowers or it could be a
- 23:58:34vegetable perhaps? Yeah. So what happens
- 23:58:37if you keep the seeds too long and you
- 23:58:39have and you haven't returned them do you
- 23:58:40have to like? Well you know I think
- 23:58:43the library would understand that's okay.
- 23:58:45Maybe you have to bring back some
- 23:58:47vegetables to make up for it as a
- 23:58:48penalty. I think that's good. Yes please
- 23:58:50bring your local librarian a flower or if
- 23:58:53you grow a tomato that's
- 23:58:54great too. I have never
- 23:58:56heard of a program like that where the
- 23:58:58libraries is distributing seeds it's
- 23:59:01fantastic. Right? Isn't that so cool?
- 23:59:03Yeah. I love that and it's completely
- 23:59:04free which is my favorite part about the
- 23:59:06library. So we're at a point now where
- 23:59:09we're looking at weeks and
- 23:59:10weeks of summer and we've got kids who
- 23:59:12are probably just now sort of burning
- 23:59:15out all the obvious stuff that they can
- 23:59:17do like go to the beach or go to the
- 23:59:18pool and now parents are starting to
- 23:59:20panic. What am I gonna do to keep these
- 23:59:22kids entertained? Okay so tell us what's
- 23:59:25happening what kind of things are
- 23:59:27coming up specifically that people should
- 23:59:29be looking out for. So I think
- 23:59:31it's really there's always stuff
- 23:59:33happening every day I think that's
- 23:59:34really the magic of it. So there's not
- 23:59:36even like that one big thing during
- 23:59:38summer necessarily but they're having
- 23:59:39stuff all the time. Like I happen to be
- 23:59:42on the teen program list right now for
- 23:59:44July. In that wonderful in the wonderful
- 23:59:46book with at the library. Yes shout out
- 23:59:48to Lucas who does this at the library. He
- 23:59:51creates these booklets. So right now I'm
- 23:59:54looking at very cool programming. There's
- 23:59:56a teen movie club so they'll play a movie
- 23:59:59for the teens. They
- 23:59:59can come in you know I
- 0:01believe they provide snacks even don't
- 0:04quote me but I
- 0:04believe there are snacks. So
- 0:07teens can get together do that. There's a
- 0:09teen game day that's Thursdays two to
- 0:11four in July and then teen hip-hop on
- 0:14Fridays which is really cool and also
- 0:17even flamingo coders which is teaching
- 0:19coding to like young
- 0:22up-and-coming coders.
- 0:24See I love that the reason why that's
- 0:26that strikes me as being so important is
- 0:28that you usually find like daycare during
- 0:31the summertime a little camps and
- 0:32stuff are geared towards very young
- 0:34children. Yeah okay and then you hit a
- 0:36point when you get to be a teen you're
- 0:38like yeah you know whatever just hang
- 0:41out and that's not really a good thing.
- 0:43Seeing these programs are specifically
- 0:45targeting teens that's smart that's
- 0:48really smart. Yeah indeed and there's so
- 0:50much going on here to get out of the heat
- 0:53because you know teens got a lot of
- 0:54energy kids got a lot of energy but it is
- 0:57hot out there so being able to go in
- 0:59the library and do fun stuff like I just
- 1:01looked up and I see teens tie-dye
- 1:03that sounds so cool. Yeah so that's
- 1:05happening as well Saturday July 19th so
- 1:08all across the board and almost every day
- 1:10of the week they've got something
- 1:11they must average over like 150 programs
- 1:15Wow a month and don't quote me I'm bad
- 1:17with math. Yeah but it's important to
- 1:21reiterate these programs have limited
- 1:24attendance so you really do need to get
- 1:26on you know sign up for them find a way
- 1:28to get on the list so that they know
- 1:30you're coming and you're being a part
- 1:32of it. They're free. Yes and it'll always
- 1:34tell you if there's registration required
- 1:36or if you can just show up like some of
- 1:39like the auditorium like lectures that
- 1:40they do you can just show up which
- 1:42actually brings me to a fun point. There
- 1:44are two author talks coming up which are
- 1:48really cool. Let me in my handy-dandy
- 1:51notebook find that information for
- 1:54everyone because it is really cool
- 1:56they're also going to be doing book
- 1:58signings. So the first author that will
- 2:01be there is Leslie Gray Streeter. She has
- 2:04a new book coming out called Family and
- 2:06Other Calamities a Novel. So she was
- 2:09award-winning or is an award-winning
- 2:11journalist and podcast host. She would be
- 2:13great on here. Yeah and she also used to
- 2:16do the entertainment and lifestyle column
- 2:19for 18 years at the Palm Beach
- 2:21Post. Really cool. So that would be
- 2:25amazing to sit down and to listen to her
- 2:26talking about her new book and then to
- 2:28get it signed be awesome. And we have
- 2:31another individual coming named Tom
- 2:33Turner who will be discussing his career
- 2:37in writing crime books also available
- 2:41this July. So for adults that want to get
- 2:43out of the heat or get out of the rain
- 2:45and want to you know. Are
- 2:47these in the middle of the day?
- 2:48Or is it more towards evening? Yes. Let's
- 2:52look it up. I might jump
- 2:56on some of that. You should.
- 2:58So yeah it's if you have the July booklet
- 3:01it is on page 17 you can find it. So here
- 3:05we have it's gonna be 6 30 p.m. okay with
- 3:09Leslie Gray Streeter so that's 6 30
- 3:117 30 and then 2 to 3 p.m. with Tom
- 3:14Turner. So July 18th Tom Turner 2 to 3
- 3:18and then Leslie Gray Streeter Wednesday
- 3:20July 9th at 6 30 to 7 30. Okay so you
- 3:24could easily go down
- 3:26take part listen to this wonderful and
- 3:28then maybe go get a bite on on Clemanis.
- 3:31Absolutely yeah that's perfect actually
- 3:34after that you could go look
- 3:36at the water even get a bite go
- 3:39down to the water enjoy the sights it's
- 3:41really nice. Okay so what other items
- 3:43should we talk about today?
- 3:45Oh what else do we have? So there is a
- 3:47cool program coming up and if you are
- 3:49interested I definitely
- 3:51recommend looking into it and seeing if
- 3:53registration is required because there
- 3:55will be an American sign
- 3:56language learning the basics part one at
- 4:00the library in July.
- 4:02That's really cool so if you
- 4:04want to learn a sign language this could
- 4:06be the perfect
- 4:06opportunity. Fantastic I mean that's a
- 4:09great thing to learn and you know we
- 4:11folks don't get the
- 4:12opportunity to learn that skill and to
- 4:15learn how to communicate I think that's
- 4:17fantastic. Yeah and there's other so we
- 4:19have a whole section
- 4:20in the back pages 18 19 that are
- 4:23community resources and
- 4:25there's even like ESOL English
- 4:27conversation groups where people can
- 4:29practice talking in English
- 4:32to each other speaking English
- 4:33to each other and then there's actually
- 4:35on page 19 programs that
- 4:37are in Spanish for people that
- 4:39are interested in different programming
- 4:41so there's also that
- 4:43page dedicated to people who
- 4:46might have a better understanding if it's
- 4:47in their native language. So
- 4:50it seems to me like there is
- 4:52there's something for everyone no matter
- 4:54what age you could be a
- 4:56toddler you could be you know a
- 4:59tween you could be a teenager and there's
- 5:00always something for you
- 5:02to do this on that. Yeah and
- 5:04that's the wonderful thing it's whatever
- 5:06you want I mean you go into
- 5:08the library and you can really
- 5:09hone it your experience to what you're
- 5:12feeling that day maybe it's
- 5:13finding a DVD or a book or
- 5:16it's doing a program it's you know taking
- 5:18part in an art class or
- 5:19just talking to a librarian.
- 5:21Librarians love talking about books
- 5:22they're very friendly you can always go
- 5:24up to the desk ask any
- 5:26questions it's a really great place also
- 5:29just to make friends I feel
- 5:31like people come in and they
- 5:33do meet other people who are reading
- 5:34similar books or in the same program so
- 5:37it's just a great part
- 5:38of our like social infrastructure. It's a
- 5:41hub for the community right
- 5:43absolutely that's fantastic
- 5:45well all right we've covered a lot of
- 5:46ground and we talked about many things
- 5:49let's once again remind
- 5:50people how they can get information about
- 5:53what's going on. Absolutely
- 5:54so I would say the best thing
- 5:56to do if you're in the area grab a
- 5:58booklet because this will give you the
- 5:59rundown but also you can go
- 6:01to wpbcitylibrary.org at any time and
- 6:06everything that's going on
- 6:07will be on there this booklet
- 6:08will be available they also have their
- 6:12separate event listings like
- 6:13a calendar listing and then
- 6:15you can register directly online. Also I
- 6:19don't know if we covered
- 6:19this but one of their big things
- 6:21going on right now is their summer
- 6:23reading program. Oh tell us about it
- 6:25please. Which is really cool so
- 6:26we definitely have to end on books you
- 6:28know just feels right. Library. But
- 6:30exactly so the theme is
- 6:33color our world and adults can take part
- 6:37as well as teens and kids so if you go
- 6:40if you want to sign up for this if you're
- 6:44serious about it
- 6:45there are prizes involved.
- 6:47I know you can go to
- 6:48mandelpubliclibrary.beanstack.com
- 6:58and Beanstack is a platform where you can
- 7:04actually log all the books that you're
- 7:06reading and leave reviews
- 7:08and every time that you do you can open
- 7:10different uh what's the word I forgot.
- 7:18And every time you do you can complete
- 7:20challenges you get tickets
- 7:22that you can put in drawings for
- 7:23actual prizes they have really good prize
- 7:26bundles that they share on like social media
- 7:27and whatnot and also through Beanstack
- 7:30you can see what it is it
- 7:32could be a tote bag, free books
- 7:34all kinds of fun stuff yeah and usually
- 7:37books themed which is
- 7:38really nice um so yeah and I
- 7:41think for adults you only have to read up
- 7:43to five books to
- 7:45complete the whole challenge
- 7:46and then you get the opportunity to
- 7:48submit tickets to win
- 7:49prizes and that's always great so
- 7:51I highly recommend and for the kids I
- 7:55believe it's done by minutes read so not
- 7:58necessarily the amount
- 7:59of books but if they spent 10 minutes 15
- 8:01minutes they can log those
- 8:02minutes and then also have the
- 8:03opportunity to get prizes which is
- 8:05awesome. That's fantastic
- 8:07so they're fun games contests
- 8:10resources to to take advantage of all
- 8:13during the summer it's it's
- 8:14uh it is the center for summer
- 8:16it'd be a great place to stay it really
- 8:18is and now that we're talking about it something else comes
- 8:20to mind which is amazing because it's
- 8:22never ending at the library
- 8:23honestly I'm probably not even
- 8:25scratching the surface but there also is
- 8:28Collection Connection which is a
- 8:30partnership with the Mando
- 8:31Public Library and Art Life WPB so that's
- 8:34a public art program here at
- 8:36the city so you get a little
- 8:38booklet you can go to the fourth floor if
- 8:40you're an adult or the third
- 8:41floor if you're a child and
- 8:43there's booklets that you go through and
- 8:45it might be like go find a
- 8:47piece of art around the city
- 8:48which there are 80 plus pieces of artwork
- 8:51public art available in
- 8:52the city and there might be a
- 8:54prompt or write a poem about this how
- 8:56does it make you feel and you fill out
- 8:58this book then you bring
- 8:59it back to the library and you show them
- 9:01that you finished it and
- 9:02you completed the challenge
- 9:04and you will get a
- 9:05little collector's pin.
- 9:07Oh that's nice.
- 9:08Right in that lovely it's a little pin to
- 9:10take home and then you
- 9:11can also be entered into
- 9:13a prize drawing so there's so many
- 9:16opportunities for prizes at the library
- 9:18which is great we love
- 9:19prizes. There is no reason for anyone to
- 9:21be bored during the
- 9:22summer here in the city.
- 9:23Absolutely not yeah just walk into the
- 9:25library and like start a
- 9:26conversation with someone at
- 9:27the front desk and there's a treasure
- 9:29trove they can like point you in the
- 9:31right direction which
- 9:32floor to go to which you know section for
- 9:35whichever genre you're
- 9:36looking for there's tons.
- 9:38Well kudos to our friends over at the
- 9:40Mando Public Library it is
- 9:41amazing what they provide.
- 9:43And thank you for all your time today
- 9:45sharing with us how we
- 9:47make the most of Mando Public
- 9:48Library during the summer. Yes please go
- 9:50to the library it's the
- 9:51best. And thank you for
- 9:53joining us for the City Center podcast
- 9:55this is a production of
- 9:56the City of West Palm Beach
- 9:57Communications Department. I'm Jerry
- 10:00Marcello we'll see you next time.
