Transcript
- 1:15None. What's up everybody, late night
- 1:32Kifi. I know I swore I wasn't going to
- 1:35do another late night one of these but here we are.
- 1:40Seems like we're live everywhere but Instagram again.
- 1:45Having trouble with Instagram since I got a new computer setup
- 1:50recently. I'm trying to remove Instagram
- 1:56and put it back and see what happens but doesn't seem to be
- 2:00working and I don't know why. Screen key, save the changes,
- 2:07tell it to go live. But all right, we'll see what
- 2:11happens. Maybe it'll come on.
- 2:13Anywho, why are we here? It's been a tough week in the
- 2:17music world and I have been thinking a lot about death.
- 2:21A topic I think about a lot. Doesn't make me a hit at
- 2:24parties. I told a very poor joke and
- 2:30dinner with my girlfriend's family this last weekend about
- 2:33making my family die from laughter.
- 2:37I thought it was very funny. Some people that some people
- 2:39didn't. It's OK.
- 2:43Drop a comment and tell us what is the worst celebrity or rock
- 2:47specifically music like in your life?
- 2:49What is the musician that died that hurt the most?
- 2:52I will engage with you. I will.
- 2:55This is not this is purely just a a rundown.
- 2:59There's been a bunch of deaths this week in the music world and
- 3:04I found it to be, you know, I all I find all these things to
- 3:07be hard. I've had a lot of death
- 3:08personally. Ghost cult has lost some
- 3:11staffers over the years that have been very near and dear to
- 3:14my heart. And it's always hard.
- 3:17But you know, this is the genre. This is the thing we love,
- 3:21right? Music and there's been celebrity
- 3:23deaths and there's been pop culture people who pass away.
- 3:27But you know, I want to know what is your you know, whether
- 3:32you watch this live right now or you check the podcast out when
- 3:36this is a podcast tomorrow or Friday or the next day, drop a
- 3:42comment and and share memory of the of the pain you felt.
- 3:46Maybe it cathartically. We'll all release it all.
- 3:50You know, it's been it's been hard for me.
- 3:52There's been so many and there's been so many.
- 3:55You know, I'm a I'm a fond I'm fond of saying death is
- 3:58undefeated. It never loses.
- 4:01So with that in mind, I made AI made a deck here and I'm going
- 4:05to add it here. And I'm still on the other side
- 4:09of the I'm on the other side of this thing a little.
- 4:12So let's this guy here a little bit.
- 4:18So we did this the worst deaths in in rock and metal.
- 4:21And I'm going to start off by talking about the ones that
- 4:24personally affected me, right? And again, I'm Kitty from
- 4:27ghostcultmag.com. Chances are this is your first
- 4:29time watching with us. Matt Williams is here and
- 4:32Colette is here and Voya is here and Furnash Man is here.
- 4:36And we're talking about the worst deaths in rocket metal and
- 4:39maybe a few that are in rocket metal at the end.
- 4:41But I want to hear from you. Tell me who has been the worst
- 4:48one for you and I'll share mine the most closest ones to my
- 4:53heart or toward the beginning of this, but this is quite a long
- 4:56list. I was you know you could just
- 4:58add to this forever. Tom Petty I had Tom Petty is on
- 5:01our list. Of course, I never saw Tom Petty
- 5:04really sad great guy and very young 54, but we'll talk about
- 5:08that in a second. So this photo is actually of
- 5:11time back Darryl when he was you guys on TikTok are not getting
- 5:15to see this. If you want to join on YouTube
- 5:17and hop in the comments. But either way, I'll engage with
- 5:20everybody here. I cannot seem to get Instagram
- 5:23to UN fuck itself. So we're still not going live on
- 5:28the gram. That's a bummer because we
- 5:29always pull in a nice group of people there, but OK, the gram
- 5:35is just a struggle. Any who so dime back down.
- 5:38This is this is a tough one for me personally.
- 5:42And if you're watching here, just before we get started, as
- 5:46always, there's a tip menu you can tip us if you want to.
- 5:52Coast Cult Mag is a not corporate entity and so we
- 5:56appreciate tips for service. And I'm doing this on top of
- 6:01everything else in my busy life. I had sworn last week I wasn't
- 6:04going to do another late Night Live stream.
- 6:06I'm really trying to get my sleeping habits Better Together,
- 6:10but so far no dice. But anyway, I'll put our tip
- 6:14menu in the comments on Facebook, YouTube and Twitch.
- 6:19Feel free to subscribe. We will subscribe back and
- 6:22follow you back And but tomorrow or later today in about 16 hours
- 6:31is our usual weekly rock and metal News Live stream.
- 6:34And we'll talk about the the deaths this week specifically.
- 6:37And we'll talk about some birthdays and we'll talk about
- 6:39some metal festivals and some rock tours that got announced
- 6:43and interviews we did here on our YouTube this week and on our
- 6:46podcasts and all the things and, and probably share and unlock
- 6:52some cool stuff too, because we like to do that, you know?
- 6:57Yeah, absolutely, man, Tom Petty's a rocker, bro.
- 7:00He's absolutely a rocker. But anyway, with that out of the
- 7:03way, let's let's talk a bit about these debts.
- 7:08And I'm going to talk specifically about the ones kind
- 7:11of close to me and I'll again, I'll you know, dime bag.
- 7:15This is a photo of our from our own evil Rob.
- 7:18He's got a few in here and the dime bag.
- 7:22Oh, no problem with Rashman. Thanks for joining in.
- 7:24It's no problem. It's no worries.
- 7:25I appreciate you. Amber is here also and Jade GGG
- 7:30Ewon is here. I don't know how to say that
- 7:32pal. Galvin is here.
- 7:34So yeah. Man, Dimebag really broke me.
- 7:36I remember where I was when he died.
- 7:38He was murdered on stage. Just an absolute horror of a
- 7:41thing to have happened to a person.
- 7:44I mean, LED Belly was apparently shot in a concert and walked it
- 7:47off somehow. LED Belly.
- 7:49Ergo the name. Maybe it's a fiction, maybe it's
- 7:52not. But Dime was murdered along with
- 7:53a bunch of people at the concert.
- 7:55Security. Other people were injured.
- 7:58It's a miracle more people weren't killed.
- 8:01It's hard to believe that is 2021 years ago.
- 8:09Oh my God. Like thanks for being Raven also
- 8:14and Jay Fields like yeah man just terrible.
- 8:16I wasn't there. I saw a damage plan the week
- 8:19before Don Beg was murdered. So damage plan?
- 8:22Played New York City about 8 days before he was killed with
- 8:27Shadows Fall and they were fucking great.
- 8:31And I met Vinny and I had a chance to meet Dime and I had
- 8:34met other members of Pantera in the past and I just I was guy
- 8:38big was mobbed by people and I was like yo I'll see you next
- 8:41time. And I hung out with Vinny for a
- 8:42minute and he gave me a big hug and I thanked him for coming
- 8:45back with damage plan and I was like I'll see him next time and
- 8:49there was no next time. So I've been very fortunate.
- 8:52I saw Pantera a ton of times as a younger guy, and I've seen the
- 8:56newer version of Pantera, whatever you want to call it,
- 8:59the tribute to Pantera with Philip and Rex and Charlie
- 9:03Benante and Zach. And I thought they did a great
- 9:05job. I do not want new music from
- 9:08Pantera under that name. But that's an episode for
- 9:10another time. In addition to the passing the
- 9:13dime bag, obviously, you know, not quite as tragic, but still
- 9:16tragically young. Vinny Paul passed away a few
- 9:20years ago. This is another picture by Evil
- 9:22Robin. Vinny was hell yeah.
- 9:25We have some exclusive photos on our website of Vinnie and Dime,
- 9:28like behind the scenes stuff from before they passed.
- 9:32And, you know, Vinnie was never the same guy.
- 9:34And you wouldn't be either if your brother was, you know, lost
- 9:37like that in a horrible murder. It really shook metal.
- 9:43I mean, you know, this is this is insane.
- 9:46But you know, a lot of stuff, a lot of stuff has happened.
- 9:49A lot of stuff, super sad. And then just, you know, the
- 9:53brothers are buried side by side in Arlington, near Dallas.
- 9:59I believe this is not the most recent photo of the grave site,
- 10:02but this is a photo that was sent in to us and they had to
- 10:06put like a protective covering over it 'cause people were like,
- 10:09defacing the gravestones. I think people just don't know
- 10:12how to act, especially since the plague.
- 10:15People don't know how to act. But yeah, man, the murder of
- 10:18Dimebag hurt me very badly. And again, this first batch of
- 10:22ones, you know, I think most people will relate to all of
- 10:26them and some of them are very personally hurtful to me.
- 10:29And then I'm going to open it up to a more wide general list.
- 10:33But the first whole bunch of these, more than half of the
- 10:35list is ones you should all know.
- 10:37Obviously, Lemmy, this is a photo I took of Lemmy on Shot
- 10:40Motörhead 3 times. I don't do concert photography
- 10:42anymore, but I'm too busy editing the website and posting
- 10:47news and stuff like that. But thanks for following
- 10:53Ziberman appreciate you and and James is here again if you want
- 10:57to contribute and drop a comment with the rock or metal or music
- 11:01just in general music death that hurt you the most.
- 11:04Let us know what it is. Let me this hurt me.
- 11:06I was so sad about let me we covered Motörhead a bunch.
- 11:10I was lucky enough to see Motörhead a bunch of times.
- 11:13I photographed Motörhead. This is a mayhem fest and on the
- 11:16second stage, and I use this photo a lot when talking about
- 11:22Motörhead. And, you know, I'm really proud
- 11:26that I got to see Motörhead, you know, with full power.
- 11:28Chuck is in our list, man, Absolutely, Chuck.
- 11:33You know, man, what another one to talk about.
- 11:35It's coming up in a few slides. Absolutely have to talk about
- 11:38Chuck. And some more recent Chuck news,
- 11:41actually, Cliff Burton. These are exclusive photos that
- 11:46Ghost Call has access to via Michael Alago.
- 11:50Perhaps you're familiar with him.
- 11:51Michael Ilago is the guy who signed Metallica to Electra
- 11:54Records. He helped make White Zombie into
- 11:56a monster before Rob Zombie went solo.
- 11:59These are private photos that Michael shared with us when we
- 12:02interviewed him the first time. And Michael was the A&R Rep and
- 12:06he signed Metallica and he worked on the big major records
- 12:09with them, the first four and and then went on to another
- 12:14record company. But, you know, he had a personal
- 12:17relationship with Cliff and all her members of Metallica, and
- 12:19he's still friends with the rest of them.
- 12:21Cliff is a huge hero of mine as a bassist.
- 12:24I sing and play bass for a long time and can't tell you how many
- 12:29hours I learned to play these Cliff bass lines and and try to,
- 12:33you know, perform. Eric Carr, man, same thing.
- 12:37Yeah. I was actually going to bring
- 12:38that up. I don't have an Eric Carr photo,
- 12:39but absolutely Eric Carr gutting Freddie is coming up in here
- 12:44too. So yeah, Cliff just died
- 12:46tragically in the infamous bus accident.
- 12:48Glad that Metallica kind of pays tribute to Cliff at every show
- 12:52and a lot of things that they do.
- 12:53There's a Cliff Burton Day here in the Bay Area where Cliff is
- 12:57from. Every February 10th on Cliff's
- 12:59birthday is Cliff Burton Day in the Castro Valley.
- 13:03And go look on YouTube for Cliff Burton Day and you'll see like
- 13:09the latest stuff. Every year there's kind of a
- 13:12celebration. And this year one of his sister
- 13:15was there really cool Lance daily.
- 13:18And also in this photo is Mike Starr, Alice In Chains, one of
- 13:21my absolute favorite bands. And this is just, you know, just
- 13:25a another terrible tragedy, you know, just just brutal, A brutal
- 13:30loss. I love Alice In Chains.
- 13:32They're easily in my top three bands.
- 13:35And you know, Lane is one of the greats of all time.
- 13:40And I do love that Alice In Chains has continued and I love
- 13:43that they found a way to move forward.
- 13:45And Alice In Chains has continued to William Duvall and
- 13:48Jerry Cantrell kind of launched, relaunched his solo career to a
- 13:52lot more success now and does a lot of Alice In Chains in his
- 13:56live show with Greg Pucciano or Pucciano from from formerly A
- 14:03villager escape plan and a better lovers and the black
- 14:06queen and stuff. And Greg is an incredible singer
- 14:08and he does great justice to Lane as this William so much
- 14:13man, so much man. I never I really never came back
- 14:17from that one either. And then, you know, Mike Starr
- 14:19is also in this photo. So really been really sad.
- 14:22And then of course, you know, Dio, maybe the greatest metal
- 14:26singer ever in terms of pure vocal ability and and talent.
- 14:31I highly recommend the Dio book and documentary Dreamers Never
- 14:34Die. It's kind of funny.
- 14:38I think mainstream people were not really aware of Dio.
- 14:42So metal heads love Dio and no Dio and no Rainbow and no Black
- 14:47Sabbath with Dio. And I was really an Aussie
- 14:49person and I was really angry that Ozzy was fired.
- 14:53And I was sort of Team Ozzy 10 years old or whatever, 8910
- 14:58years old when Ozzy went solo. And but I love Dio.
- 15:02I got to see Dio and I'm really appreciative that I made it like
- 15:06a just a concerted effort in the 90s to check his solo band out
- 15:11and enjoy and appreciate him because he was magical live.
- 15:14I do feel like now mainstream metalheads because of streaming,
- 15:19because of these events hailing Ronnie and and, you know, these
- 15:25cancer charity events that help raise money in his name.
- 15:28I think there's a tremendous great new awareness of DO that.
- 15:31Maybe there wasn't when he died because I still feel like he was
- 15:34somehow an underground guy most of his career.
- 15:38But yeah, man, I love heaven and hell.
- 15:41Also trash, man, you fucking rule.
- 15:42Thank you so much for your contributions here, pal.
- 15:46So, yeah, DO Jeff Hanneman of Slayer, you know, second member
- 15:52of the big 4 bands to pass. And obviously also, you know,
- 15:56his drinking had been a problem. And perhaps his, if he had, you
- 16:00know, had gotten his drinking and alcoholism under control, he
- 16:03might not have. I know, bro.
- 16:06I know I'm breaking my own heart and This is why I'm doing this.
- 16:09It's a little bit of, I mean, like, I have therapy tomorrow
- 16:12afternoon. I probably should have waited
- 16:13till after this, but you know, I said right at the top before you
- 16:20tuned in thrash man, that like, I hope, like maybe all of us
- 16:24together can like let go of our grief cathartically.
- 16:30So Jeff, man, Jeff passed away. I was lucky to see Slayer a lot.
- 16:33And I've seen Slayer with Jeff with with Jeff and Gary and I've
- 16:38seen Slayer with all their drummers, including John Daddy.
- 16:42And you know, I know a lot of people feel like Slayer wasn't
- 16:46the same when Jeff asked. And I don't think there was a
- 16:49notion that Jeff wouldn't come back until he passed.
- 16:53You know, like I think he I think they expected him to
- 16:58return to get well, to get his strength back.
- 17:00I know he suffered a terrible flesh eating bacteria is an
- 17:05extremely metal way to go and a terrible way to go.
- 17:07Extremely painful. He was kind of nodding to doing
- 17:09the skin graft, but like there was a hope that he could, you
- 17:14know, rehab and get his strength back and return.
- 17:17So, you know, I don't, I don't think until he passed they
- 17:21envisioned the going on without him.
- 17:23But once he passed, they had a choice to make and they made it.
- 17:26And Gary is great and the Slayer return has been great.
- 17:29Ghost Cult has been a part of it.
- 17:31We were covered the very first Slayer comeback concert at Riot
- 17:35Fest last year and gave away VIP tickets to the weekend.
- 17:39And we were quoted in the original press release touting
- 17:43Slayer's return, that the world had turned to shit since they
- 17:46were gone and now they came back.
- 17:48And I know that people are very cynical and bands don't stay
- 17:51broken up, but I'm glad like somebody today is going to
- 17:54discover Slayer and then go backwards and buy all the
- 17:58records and become a die hard fan and.
- 18:00And yeah, really, you know, really caught them off guard and
- 18:05and and you know what? I know there's some sadness
- 18:08there from those guys, too. I don't see it purely like money
- 18:12is the reason for everything. It's very easy to be cynical.
- 18:15But like, Slayer is also their band, just like Panterra's
- 18:17Philip and Rex's band too. Like they lost Daryl and Vinny,
- 18:21but that's also their band. So should they not have a band
- 18:24anymore? There's plenty of bands out here
- 18:26with no original members. Varner has almost no original
- 18:30members I saw. I'll talk about it tomorrow in
- 18:32the live stream for the new show.
- 18:35I saw a video of the new Black Flag line up.
- 18:38God, not good. So, you know, no shade to
- 18:42anybody who is carrying on and trying to have a career without
- 18:47their, you know, band numbers. Overkill indeed.
- 18:50I love overkill. Cornell, man.
- 18:53Here's another one. Chris Cornell.
- 18:54Just absolutely brutal. I know exactly where I was when
- 18:57he died. And you know, suicide is
- 19:03horrible. And we'll talk a lot about that.
- 19:05I've had some suicide very close to me.
- 19:08Friends, people who worked with us at Ghost Cone, Cornell, just
- 19:13brutal. When Cornell died, just
- 19:17absolutely, just positively robbed of how great he is.
- 19:21I'm really glad that Soundgarden got in the Rock and Roll Hall of
- 19:23Fame. I am really glad that the
- 19:25lawsuit between his second wife and the remaining band members
- 19:29is over and they will be the final Soundgarden album
- 19:34released. We will get new Chris Cornell
- 19:36solo material, maybe a box set of vinyls or something.
- 19:40He apparently had a lot of material in the can for a new
- 19:43record, unplugged and electric. So and you know, as great a
- 19:48voice as Chris Cornell had an unbelievable earth shattering
- 19:52voice. He's an incredible songwriter
- 19:54and guitar player and I don't think enough people talk about
- 19:58that. And in my opinion, more people
- 20:00should talk about that. I want to just give a shout out
- 20:03again to everybody watching. That's some people watching on
- 20:05the Tube of you, some people here on TikTok, some on Twitch.
- 20:09I could not get the in the instead of go for the second
- 20:14time tomorrow, we'll try again. And then, of course, you can't
- 20:19talk about Cornell without Chester.
- 20:21And even if you're not a fan of Linkin Park.
- 20:24It's hard to calculate like how huge is like a second wave, new
- 20:28metal band and rock band. Linkin Park became one of the
- 20:32best selling bands of all time of the last 25 years.
- 20:36No surprise that they were able to put out a version of the band
- 20:41and come back to like headline arenas and stadiums around the
- 20:44world and headline festivals, which is nothing short of
- 20:47remarkable on the strength of this potent band and Chester's
- 20:51beautiful soul. And him and Cornell were very
- 20:54close. And, and you know, it's widely
- 20:57accepted that maybe Chester killed himself on Cornell's
- 21:03birthday, which is 2 months after Cornell died, which is
- 21:08just absolutely fucking brutal. I think they were a A and rehab
- 21:13buddies and maybe Cornell was Chester's sponsor.
- 21:16So Cornell fell off the wagon and then on alive to himself.
- 21:21You know what, what would you know, what hope Chester would
- 21:24have lost? You know, like, so sad.
- 21:26And he left behind six kids. And I know that his second wife
- 21:30and his kid is kind of a hot mess, constantly throwing shade.
- 21:34And I think he expected to be the new Lincoln Park singer or
- 21:37something. And he seems unwell and needs to
- 21:41take care of his mental well-being and health.
- 21:43But this is a wonderful photo of Chester when he was fronting
- 21:48Stone Temple Pilots, which I also photographed them.
- 21:52This is shot by my good friend Meg Loyal.
- 21:55Meg Loyal Photography out of LA. And I saw Chester with STP and
- 21:59Weiland was his favorite singer. Weiland is on this list also.
- 22:03Another tragedy. But yeah, man, Chester, it's a
- 22:06tough one and it's a real tough one.
- 22:07I understand. Like aside from the political
- 22:10things with, you know, the choice of of singer, I think
- 22:15like, you know, oh, how could they go on without Chester?
- 22:18You know, Linkin Park wasn't Chester's band in the 1st place.
- 22:20He joined late. It certainly was his band.
- 22:23He made it his band, but he wasn't the founder of the band.
- 22:26It was always Mike's band. And again, I don't, I don't
- 22:29fault them for trying to pick up the pieces and move on and have
- 22:32a band again. But some people do.
- 22:34I understand if you just can't accept them without Chester, but
- 22:38I think it's good for music to have the band back.
- 22:42Phil Linett man Philo from from Thin Lizzy, easily the most
- 22:46underrated person on this entire list probably.
- 22:49And a band that should have been so much bigger.
- 22:52They never really got to be huge in America the way Queen and Led
- 22:55Zeppelin and Black Sabbath did, and Thin Lizzy is much more than
- 23:00you hear the same 3 or 4 songs that you know from rock radio.
- 23:04But Thin Lizzy is an incredible band with an iconic original
- 23:08sound. Phil is one of the greatest
- 23:10singers and songwriters ever to live.
- 23:12He's an incredible bass player and a beautiful lyricist.
- 23:17Great singer and very well gone before too too long, like lost
- 23:21before his time. I think had he lived, we would
- 23:25have got like some newer version of Thin Lizzy in the 90s and the
- 23:302000s where he would have gotten everything he would have
- 23:33deserved because he really deserves to be talked about,
- 23:36like Led Zeppelin and Freddie and Queen.
- 23:38And I really, really underrated, really unheralded.
- 23:43And a lot of people just know the big hits, which are
- 23:45wonderful songs. I appreciate that Metallica
- 23:48plays Whiskey in the jar all the time, and that puts money in his
- 23:51family's pockets. But his daughters, we're grown
- 23:54now. But like, such a great band and
- 23:57so underrated and and so, you know, so many more great songs
- 24:01than what you've heard before. Like, go explore those records,
- 24:03especially that middle period, like 73 to like 83, man.
- 24:08That's, that's the time. Yeah.
- 24:11They just don't know Finlizzi, man.
- 24:12They just don't know him. I appreciate you, Zeppelin.
- 24:15Of course, man. John Bottom.
- 24:16I don't know if anybody has seen.
- 24:18I can talk all day and night about Led Zeppelin, one of my
- 24:20favorite bands ever. Obviously, John Bottom's death
- 24:24ended the band and that's, you know, a lot of bands would do
- 24:28that and have that. I don't know if you've seen
- 24:30Becoming Led Zeppelin, I highly recommend the movie.
- 24:34So far my favorite music documentary of the year.
- 24:36A little. I also do love the Pink Floyd
- 24:38documentary that's out, and there's a few others coming that
- 24:40I want to see. Well, Pink Floyd's not so much a
- 24:44documentary as it's a concert film with a little documentary.
- 24:47But the the Zeppelin movie is unbelievable anyway, just on its
- 24:52own, like the first three to five years of the band, you
- 24:56know, the first couple of albums and change.
- 24:58But to hear Bonham and speak interviewed at length on on like
- 25:04with deep answers and and very thoughtful, coherent stuff about
- 25:10the formation of the band and how he makes music and about how
- 25:13him and Jones play together and Jimmy and Robert and how we knew
- 25:17Robert from around the way in Birmingham, Really incredible
- 25:21stuff. And Bonham still to this day,
- 25:23you could put on a Led Zeppelin record and be like, that's John
- 25:26Bonham. Maybe a lot of people sound like
- 25:28him, but that's him and you could always tell he was
- 25:31definitely the the linchpin of the rhythm section of the band.
- 25:35But they were all you know, it's kind of like an Avengers
- 25:38Assemble. They were all pretty incredible,
- 25:39but bottom is unbelievable. I highly recommend that
- 25:42documentary. And again, Freddie Mercury, man,
- 25:46what a just a loss. If you wanted to say Freddie
- 25:48Mercury is the best singer ever in rock music, I would not argue
- 25:51with you. He is technically perfect.
- 25:54He was incredible. He couldn't read music, but he
- 25:57pulled the music out of himself, like out of the ether and made,
- 26:01you know, incredible songs. He played piano like a, like a
- 26:04maestro. He sang beautifully.
- 26:07He could do, you know, high tenor, soaring vocals.
- 26:11He had a beautiful voice, almost like a violin note, like like a
- 26:14violinist plays or a cello, like just an incredible, soulful,
- 26:19beautiful voice. And, you know, obviously, he's
- 26:24gone a long time now, 35 years since he passed away.
- 26:28And again, you mentioned earlier, Eric Carr passed away
- 26:33the same day as Freddie Mercury, and his death was completely
- 26:37overshadowed. I know it's a thing.
- 26:39It's like one of the few things that Gene Simmons is grinds his
- 26:42gears that I back him on. He's like nobody even paid
- 26:45respect to Eric Carr. And he's right.
- 26:47And Eric Carr, you know, sadly died and Kiss got to continue on
- 26:53with Eric Singer and Peter Chris and then Eric Singer again.
- 26:57And but Carr was one-of-a-kind. He he came in and, you know,
- 27:02like we're not going to talk all about Kiss today, but Eric was
- 27:06incredible and deserves a lot of flowers.
- 27:08He's an incredible drumming on the 80s Kiss records is some of
- 27:11the best things about those records.
- 27:13But Freddie was one-of-a-kind. And, you know, Queen is one of
- 27:18the greatest bands ever. It's kind of interesting.
- 27:21My other podcast, the Glacial musical, Poor Kiss, we have done
- 27:24a huge nine album run of deep dive of every record and outside
- 27:29of the hits, there's some duds on all those records, which is
- 27:32interesting. But Freddie, man, he really was
- 27:35the cherry on top of the sundae, Chuck.
- 27:40So this has come up, of course, Chuck Schuldener for you death
- 27:42metal fans, so many great tributes to Chuck.
- 27:46It's really the, the failure, honestly.
- 27:50Like if you don't understand why healthcare needs to be universal
- 27:53and it's a right, it's a human right.
- 27:55Chuck is your case study case. Chuck is gone because he
- 28:00couldn't get he had a treatable operable brain tumor and he
- 28:04couldn't get it because the surgery or care because he
- 28:08didn't have health insurance and no one would cover him.
- 28:10And he didn't couldn't afford it out of his pocket, even though
- 28:14he made some of the most iconic and great death metal of all
- 28:16time. And I think he was probably
- 28:18moving into some progressive metal.
- 28:22I feel very fortunate that death to all is the thing.
- 28:25I think Chuck's music lives on in all these great crazy tech
- 28:28death bands. Left to Die and Gruesome are two
- 28:32bands that are, you know, pure death worship and honor.
- 28:36I think you hear death in a lot of current bands and a lot of
- 28:40people still are learning at the feet of Chuck and the fingers of
- 28:44Chuck. We have some interviews coming
- 28:47up on the channel both with Matt Harvey of Gruesome and Exhumed
- 28:53and also Gus Rios of of Left to Die and Gruesome to talk a bit
- 28:59about Chuck as well. So hey, Wise Blood records this
- 29:01year. I'm up late doing a little live
- 29:02stream now. I hope you're well.
- 29:05And great lyric writing, like, you know, great and evolved as a
- 29:09vocalist from like his early screamy thrash stuff to more
- 29:14pure death metal, right? What a loss.
- 29:21Definitely a guy that was not replaceable.
- 29:24You know, Prince, man, maybe not the first name you think of when
- 29:28you think of this channel or when you think of rocket metal,
- 29:31but Prince was absolutely a rocker as much as he was a
- 29:35funker, you know, a funk master and, and a maestro of R&B and
- 29:40soul and sex. The guy was an incredible guitar
- 29:44player, an extremely skilled student of rock music.
- 29:49It's clear his influences melded these things all together in a
- 29:53way that really never been done before, never truly been done
- 29:58before. He was revolutionary, and that's
- 30:00not just a pun. Prince is unbelievable and it's
- 30:05such a devastating loss. And I'll share a little
- 30:10anecdote. Ironically, here's a connection.
- 30:12Just unironically. Hey, Pike Bishop is here and
- 30:14says Cliff hurt the most. Absolutely.
- 30:16So young, so tragic, so much in front of him.
- 30:18And again, it's very cynical to say that Metallica would have
- 30:22stayed heavy or stayed trash. Cliff was the guy making him do
- 30:26like Fade to Black and some of called Cthulhu and like Ryan and
- 30:33Cliff is the one that wanted them to make concise punk rock
- 30:36songs and not these and Justice for all nine minute epics.
- 30:40He would have very much been in the camp of the Black Album.
- 30:44Maybe it would have even been softer.
- 30:48Definitely love Cliff though. Cliff's a huge inspiration to
- 30:50me. I used to play bass and I had a
- 30:52wild like Cliff and all these things.
- 30:54Prince is incredible and really we'll never really know what we
- 30:59could've got. He died so young and we lost so
- 31:02much. The guy was one-of-a-kind.
- 31:04Absolutely. You can't really say that about
- 31:05everybody on this list, but Prince was absolutely
- 31:07one-of-a-kind. Bowie, man.
- 31:10Bowie hurt a lot, kind of right after, you know, that year was
- 31:14terrible, right after Lemmy. And the thing with Bowie is that
- 31:20he was sick for years with cancer and didn't tell anybody
- 31:24outside of his most inner circle.
- 31:25Was not made public and he just kind of created the his final
- 31:31masterpiece record, Black Star in kind of privacy with his
- 31:36usual collaborators. He knew he was going to perish.
- 31:39He knew he was going to die and he made this unbelievable
- 31:42record. Bowie really copied and imitated
- 31:45over and over. He was really reinvented himself
- 31:50so many times, so many times really.
- 31:55There's very few artists who can really compare him to.
- 31:57He had many lives. He cut across 5-6 decades of
- 32:01music, 7 decades of music and it really hasn't been the same
- 32:06since he passed. You know, it really, it really
- 32:11hurt. Bowie was great.
- 32:13My partner here at Ghost Ghost called Omar was at the David
- 32:17Bowie 50th birthday party in New York City in the 90s and I was
- 32:22like, where the fuck was I? I was probably on drugs,
- 32:25honestly. Alcohol, on drugs.
- 32:26Anyway, I was in a fucking stupor.
- 32:31Anyhow, Bowie, another tough one.
- 32:35Pink Floyd, man, Pink Floyd is my favorite band ever and the
- 32:38death of Rick Wright hit me extremely hard.
- 32:41Rick is the secret sauce that makes the band wonderful.
- 32:44His vocals, his piano, his jazz sensibilities is the Prague in
- 32:49the prog rock of Pink Floyd to a great degree.
- 32:52And they all are. And Rick was just beautiful,
- 32:57man. And I really love how much he's
- 32:59featured in the Pompeii footage, in Live at Pompeii, the album
- 33:03and the footage. They really show him and his
- 33:06craft. You know, he never, he kind of
- 33:11suffered because of the split. He's the person that suffered
- 33:14the most. He was technically fired by
- 33:16Rodger from Pink Floyd and he can never really be hired back
- 33:19officially. So they always paid him like a
- 33:22like, you know, a hired guy, very well hired guy, very well
- 33:26paid hired guy. But just one of the real legends
- 33:29of of classic rock and just so distinctive and interesting and
- 33:35really the art of playing beautifully and gently and
- 33:39slowly and patiently as opposed to, you know, another Keith
- 33:44Emerson passed and Greg Lake passed.
- 33:45Those guys are great. And I love Keith Emerson and
- 33:47Rick Wakeman is still out there banging around and John Lord
- 33:50passed away. There's many of them.
- 33:52But you know, Rick was one-of-a-kind.
- 33:54He really was very special. And nobody quite sounds like
- 33:57him. And and people are still copying
- 34:00his stuff and still copying Pink Floyd to this day.
- 34:04Jimi Hendrix, man, maybe except for Eddie Van Halen, did more
- 34:08for guitar and guitar music than anybody ever like, just.
- 34:13But what he did in a few years to push guitar music forward to
- 34:18the pinnacle, to the lead of all of rock music, it cannot be
- 34:23understated. There are nice little solos in
- 34:25The Beatles music. There are some cool solos in The
- 34:27Who. There are some great solos even
- 34:30by Clapton on Cream and things, but Hendrix just, you know,
- 34:34reinvented everything. Guitar, guitar sounds, recording
- 34:38guitar, guitar effects, guitars themselves, how to be a
- 34:42performer, how to be a showman. His first show in London, the
- 34:46front row was The Beatles and Eric Clapton and The Who all
- 34:49like mouth open like a gape, like they didn't know what they
- 34:53were seeing. Like an alien came down and said
- 34:56take me to your leader. But instead he was there.
- 35:00There was a Beatles record that came out like Sergeant Pepper
- 35:02came out on a Tuesday, and Jimmy played in London on Thursday and
- 35:06opened with Sergeant Pepper the song.
- 35:08And the band was like, what the fuck?
- 35:10He bought the record and learned the song like in a few days.
- 35:13I'm not saying it's not impossible now, but that's the
- 35:15dedication. That's the talent level.
- 35:17This guy had another seltzer. I wish it was a beer right now.
- 35:22But yeah, Jimmy, man. Still, I listen to Hendrix
- 35:25records and Floyd records and I and Zeppelin records and Sabbath
- 35:29and I and Lizzie and I still discover new things.
- 35:31You know, I could have put Keith Moon in here, too.
- 35:37I didn't put Keith Moon in here, but that's OK.
- 35:40Who's a little before my time, actually.
- 35:42But good band, Ramones, man. This one also gutted me because
- 35:46growing up in New York City, Oh, Bill's Mafia 716 and change,
- 35:52says Cornell, still hurts. Still hurts, man.
- 35:54I'm with you Ramones. Being a New York guy, I love
- 35:57Ramones. I was never a punk.
- 36:00I was always a metal head and punk adjacent.
- 36:02But I grew up with a lot of punks and hardcore kids.
- 36:05And I really love the Ramones, man.
- 36:08I I love them so much. And especially the one that hurt
- 36:11the most is honestly Joey. Johnny's a guy nobody liked.
- 36:14He was very talented, he could write a riff.
- 36:17Dee Dee was a wonderful disaster and all the original Ramones are
- 36:22passed and Joey hurt the most. I really hope that Johnny's wife
- 36:28let's up and allows that movie to get made.
- 36:33I think Pete Davidson is trying to play the role of Joey Ramone.
- 36:35He's obsessed with them. He's loves the Ramones,
- 36:38apparently. I think that's interesting, kind
- 36:40of his star power and comedic ability.
- 36:42I'm sure you could get like a really fun cast to play Blondie
- 36:45and Talking Heads and Wire and Television and Alan Vega and
- 36:49things like that, the CBG VS People.
- 36:51But Ramones, I got to see him a few times.
- 36:53They were unbelievable, and it's very sad that they are all gone.
- 36:58I really want to get to Berlin someday and go to the Ramones
- 37:01museum there. Why is there not a Ramones
- 37:03museum in New York? What the hell?
- 37:07Eddie Van Halen, This one's brutal.
- 37:10Just because he suffered a lot and he was very sick to the end,
- 37:12which I find, you know, very sad.
- 37:15But yeah, Eddie, this is a Photoshop again by Evil Rob for
- 37:19Ghost Cult in 2015 on their final.
- 37:22What wound wound up being their final tour?
- 37:30And you know, man, just really rough.
- 37:37He was so revolutionary and great.
- 37:39Similar to Hendrix, he pushed guitar boundaries of guitar.
- 37:44I know people want to say Van Halen was simple, but like, you
- 37:46know, they could have made more complex music.
- 37:49They were trying to make, like, simple, catchy songs and then
- 37:53show off in the space between. It's so brilliant.
- 37:56It's so essential. He really changed everything.
- 38:01I mean, overnight people were throwing away their pedals and
- 38:03going over to racks and changing their type of guitars and amps.
- 38:06And really, maybe today's Polyphia and Pliny and Animals
- 38:14As Leaders and all your shredding people don't exist.
- 38:18If Van Halen didn't and Randy Rhodes was coming up soon,
- 38:21didn't kind of push the genre forward the way Hendrix did, you
- 38:26know, 10 years prior. And what a loss.
- 38:29And we lost Van Halen. And Alex has totally got rid of
- 38:31all his drums. And obviously he's old and hurt
- 38:33too. But he, you know, he lost his
- 38:35love for music because his brother died.
- 38:37Similar to Finnie, very sad. Peter Steele, Type O Negative,
- 38:42man. The fun part of Type O Negative
- 38:45is I got to see him a few times, but also I could have seen him
- 38:48like 100 times and I was like, these guys play all the time in
- 38:51New York. I'll see him next time.
- 38:53I'll see him next time. And I would go occasionally, but
- 38:55they would show up at a festival I was at like Oz Fest, and they
- 38:58were there. But Type O Negative was great.
- 39:02Again, a lot of personal stories tied up to acquaintances and
- 39:05close friends of mine with Peter, by all accounts, a
- 39:08wonderful person and I know he was a complex person, a big fan
- 39:12of carnivore. Take it for what it is, you
- 39:15know, somewhat of a, you know, an ironic joke band.
- 39:20And Peter was just magical. Type O Negative's music is
- 39:23magical. I highly recommend probably the
- 39:26closest thing we'll ever get to a Type O Negative.
- 39:29Maybe someday. We've heard that both Johnny and
- 39:31Kenny are open to a Type O Negative tribute show, but I
- 39:35think what you should do is check out Sun Don't Shine, which
- 39:38is the new super group with Kenny and Johnny from Typo and
- 39:42Kirk and Todd from Down. And they have a new single
- 39:46coming out soon. And the final writing session is
- 39:49taking place now for their debut album, which I think is very
- 39:52exciting on Corpse Paint Records.
- 39:54I'm very excited about that. But Peter always close to my
- 39:57heart and I love that dude. Neil Perk.
- 40:00This kind of shattered me. And again, it was like just we
- 40:02didn't know he was sick, and then we found out how sick he
- 40:05was after he died, which is just absolutely tragic.
- 40:10I don't really care for people talking like I knew all along he
- 40:14was sick or he was, we were, you know, I was in the know.
- 40:18And you know, name dropping a person after they die when
- 40:24they're not around to verify it is a very convenient kind of
- 40:27thing, very unique to the Internet and social media and
- 40:31click bait things. But you know, very sad I did not
- 40:36go to the farewell, what became the farewell Rush 40 tour.
- 40:40I was like, oh, they'll be back in another year.
- 40:41I'll go next year on the new album.
- 40:43And they never came back. But I saw Rush many times in my
- 40:45first arena concert ever was Rush and Kansas at Madison
- 40:51Square Garden when I was in junior high school.
- 40:54Which is crazy because I'm fucking old.
- 40:57RIP to the professor, ACDC. Man, just even looking at this
- 41:03picture makes me sad. Highway to Hell photo shoot
- 41:06here. Von Scott on your right hand
- 41:09side and Malcolm Young on the left.
- 41:11Malcolm obviously died a few years ago.
- 41:16We might have just seen the last A/C DCUS tour.
- 41:19I'm hopeful they're going to announce another bunch of dates.
- 41:21But really, they did what they could do, and it was like 15
- 41:25dates, tops across the country. And that's all they could do.
- 41:28And so, you know, every city got kind of two dates or two dates
- 41:31close to each other so people could drive a certain distance
- 41:34to see them. But, you know, Bond died.
- 41:37Bond was like the soul of the band and really underrated as a
- 41:42singer and a front man. And you know him, Levy and Ozzy
- 41:45used to raise hell. Mark Evans, who was the original
- 41:51bassist or the original sort of prominent basis of ACDC before
- 41:56Cliff came in for like 40 something years.
- 41:58Mark's book, which is highly recommended.
- 42:00Mark was like, we were waking up after a particular hard weekend
- 42:06of carousing and we're like lounging on a on a deck and some
- 42:10robes and we're looking out at the Eiffel Tower.
- 42:13And Bond looks over to me while we're like soaking up some sun
- 42:17with hangovers and sunglasses on and drinks and smokes and he
- 42:21goes on. I think they got one of them
- 42:23towers in Paris, but we're in Paris, that's the Eiffel Tower.
- 42:28Oh, cool, gone. But, you know, Malcolm was a Rif
- 42:32machine and really was the heartbeat of that band as much
- 42:35as anybody, as much as Angus is the face of the band, you know,
- 42:39Malcolm was really the soul. And one of my regrets is I've
- 42:42never seen ACDCI. Wouldn't mind going but it's not
- 42:46going to be the same with Malcolm.
- 42:48Brian is great and did a great job.
- 42:50Very few bands have succeeded even more after switching
- 42:54singers or having a singer pass away.
- 42:56ACDC is one of them. I wouldn't argue about Black
- 43:00Sabbath or Van Halen. This is Randy Rhodes's mom D
- 43:06with Ozzy, Sharon John 5. I see Zack Wylde there some
- 43:12other faces when Randy was inducted into the Rock Walk in
- 43:17Hollywood 21 years ago. D Rhodes has passed away since
- 43:23then. Obviously Randy Rhodes at the
- 43:25time of his past and he probably would have abandoned rock music.
- 43:29There's a there's a Randy Rhodes biography movie in the works.
- 43:34There's an Ozzy movie in the works.
- 43:38Randy, you know, tragically died in that, you know, plane crash.
- 43:45Just brutal. He was so young, he was so
- 43:48gifted. He definitely was rising beyond
- 43:50metal. He probably would have
- 43:52eventually left Ozzy's band to do something else in music.
- 43:55He probably would have been, I think like a Segovia or a
- 44:00progressive rock musician like Devin Townsend without the
- 44:03vocals. That's my guest.
- 44:06Really incredible. There's definitely a camp of
- 44:08people think Randy was ahead of Eddie at that time, but they
- 44:12were very similar from similar cuts and he is the shit.
- 44:16He is incredible the the bodywork that he left behind.
- 44:21Wyland. Here's Scott Wyland, man,
- 44:23absolutely tragic. Velvet revolver and of course,
- 44:26Stone Tuble pilots, one of the most.
- 44:29It's weird. They got kind of smashed a
- 44:31little when they came out right at the sort of the break of
- 44:34grunge bands in that second wave with Bush and other bands.
- 44:38But really, Stone Tuble Pilots is far beyond just a grunge band
- 44:42or, you know, obviously they were San Diego by way of New
- 44:45Jersey and not Seattle. And violin is not at all from
- 44:49that area. But he just ended up their
- 44:51singer, you know, just phenomenal.
- 44:55Just a phenomenal singer, a brilliant, poetic lyricist, and,
- 45:01you know, just a very big tragedy that he passed.
- 45:08And of course, you can't talk about these things without
- 45:11talking about The Beatles. John murdered, you know, half a
- 45:14King Crimson dude. More than that, I'm so sad about
- 45:18Crimson Crimson, one of my favorite bands also.
- 45:20And Bill Reeflin died a few years ago.
- 45:23I saw the last full tour of King Crimson with Bill on drums like
- 45:27yeah, sick man, just the original lyricist.
- 45:30That's right. And Giles side and yeah, just
- 45:34very, very sad. But you know, Beatles, obviously
- 45:37John murdered. I was like a little kid watching
- 45:40Monday Night Football because December 8th is not only the day
- 45:43that I'm very was killed and the day that John Lennon was
- 45:47murdered, but it's my mom's birthday.
- 45:48So we were like Monday night watching Monday Night Football
- 45:53and having, like, ice cream with my mom for her birthday.
- 45:56And then Howard Cosell announces that John Lennon is dead,
- 45:59obviously a long time later. And after that, George Harrison,
- 46:05who had a insane life. Like, he was so good.
- 46:09And he got to really come into his own outside of The Beatles
- 46:13as a solo artist and the collaborator with other artists
- 46:17and bands, traveling Wilburys and things like that.
- 46:19And then he was like there was like a home invasion in his home
- 46:22in Staten Island and he was stabbed almost to death.
- 46:25He recovered from that and then died anyway of cancer.
- 46:29But George and and and John obviously legends Beatles not I
- 46:34love the later Beatles more than the early Beatles.
- 46:37And I think some of The Beatles solo stuff equals The Beatles.
- 46:39But you know, we still have Paul and we still have Ringo.
- 46:43I don't, you know, those guys are both 80 something, which is
- 46:47wild. And of course the biggest band
- 46:50in the last 25 years is Slipknot and they've lost two of their
- 46:53founding members and they're still going on with sometimes
- 46:57Clown and just Clown and Corey. And I think Clown is not
- 47:00participating in some of the Slipknot's headline tour stuff
- 47:04right now because he's got some family problems.
- 47:06But you know, obviously Joey died 4 years ago and, and Paul
- 47:1115 years ago. And it's nice that the band pays
- 47:14it forward and everything they do with that with those guys.
- 47:17And you know, again, cynical people are like how dare they
- 47:20continue without those guys that help Co found the band.
- 47:24Well, they're not here, unfortunately, And apparently
- 47:27both the estates of of the both the estates of those guys have
- 47:34permitted. Looks like the garbage dump is
- 47:36here. This is an especially tough one
- 47:45for me, man. Trevor Surnard is a person I
- 47:47knew personally. We interviewed him.
- 47:50The very first Ghost Cult podcast interview was with
- 47:52Trevor. Trevor lived in Brooklyn for
- 47:55quite a time when I also had moved back to Brooklyn from
- 47:58Boston before I moved here to California.
- 48:00Trevor was absolutely wonderful. He did so much for Underground
- 48:04Metals. So many unknown bands got put on
- 48:10because of Trevor. I mean he really one of the
- 48:13biggest tragedies in the last few years.
- 48:15Suicide is terrible. It leaves people with such a
- 48:18loss. But also like, think of how much
- 48:20pain he was in to take his own life.
- 48:23I still miss the guy. He was really good to ghost
- 48:25Cult. He was always nice to us and
- 48:31it's rough man, it's very rough. I get emotional.
- 48:37I just think about it on the bar which is getting picked up in my
- 48:40building one more second. We now have the unfortunate
- 48:48distinction of having several people that we've interviewed
- 48:51pass away, and one of those people is Riley Gale of Power
- 48:54Trip. And we was one of our first big
- 48:58in person interviews. I watched the band playing many,
- 49:02many shows where they slayed. I once spent a whole night with
- 49:05him at Duffs Alcohol Abuse Center in Brooklyn, drinking and
- 49:08talking politics. Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:12Sheridan Douglas. And we're going to talk about
- 49:15that in a minute. I'm a big nitsoreb fan.
- 49:21I don't even like writing obituary.
- 49:23Like, you know, I write a good deal of the news on
- 49:26ghostcalledman.com and I don't like writing obituaries.
- 49:29I'm a I'm a trained, I'm a trained TikTok.
- 49:35It's like we're restricting you for talking about death and
- 49:37unalighing. Great.
- 49:39I'm trying to help people and myself anyway, you know, I'm I
- 49:44went to journalism school. So like I learned how to write
- 49:47death notices and obituaries and I don't like doing it.
- 49:50They all hurt to a degree. Riley hurts me and I I sat next
- 49:55to this guy and talked about, you know, him being liberal in a
- 50:00red state and what that was like and how to organize and how to
- 50:04be politically active and not be a douche knuckle and not, you
- 50:08know, have it be part of your musical identity and not ruin
- 50:10your band doing it. So I'm in favor of power trip
- 50:15continuing the way they are now. I do believe they're going to
- 50:18sign a record deal and put out new music at some point in the
- 50:21future. That may be controversial, but
- 50:23we shall see. Riley was one-of-a-kind.
- 50:25Also an amazing and a huge, just a hugely knowledgeable fan of
- 50:30punk and metal, which I loved about him.
- 50:33Tom Petty Here you go, just 54. Die too young.
- 50:38Just you know, men. I'm, I'm almost the same age
- 50:43that Tom is when he passed. And I have been taking, you
- 50:47know, more serious care of my health the last year and a half.
- 50:53This year has been mostly mental health.
- 50:55Last year was more physical stuff, but I'm doing both in
- 50:58equal measures as much as I humanly can.
- 51:00And, you know, maybe Tom was not paying attention or ignoring
- 51:05certain signs. Maybe we could have got, you
- 51:08know, we never know. We could have got checked out.
- 51:10But it sucks. It's super sucks.
- 51:14Thanks again, everybody watching here.
- 51:20Steve Clark of Def Leppard, man, I should not do these things
- 51:23overnight. Steve Clark, Steven Steve of Def
- 51:25Leppard died of alcoholism. He had kind of stepped down from
- 51:30the band. He was replaced by Vivian
- 51:31Campbell, formerly Dio, and Nancy Savage, and a bunch of
- 51:34other bands. And Steve is really the
- 51:37architect of Def Leppard's early success.
- 51:40His rhythm guitar, his songwriting was really the heart
- 51:46and soul of that band for a long time.
- 51:48And it's clear their best material was with Steve.
- 51:52I think everything after generalized his big step down.
- 51:55And I like the band a great deal, and I would love to see
- 51:57them again someday. I know most of the show is kind
- 52:01of on tape, but it kind of has to be.
- 52:03Steve was incredible. He's really underrated as a
- 52:05songwriter. And he was, you know, just
- 52:08still. There's a memorial to him in his
- 52:11hometown of Sheffield, England, where the band is from, where
- 52:14Def Leppard is from. And he's still, you know, well
- 52:17regarded and, you know, the scene.
- 52:22Yeah, same thing, man. Same thing.
- 52:24Thrash, man. I agree.
- 52:26And of course can't have this conversation.
- 52:27I'll talk about Kurt Cobain on the day after Nirvana surpasses
- 52:322 billion streams on YouTube for Smells Like Teen Spirit, of
- 52:40course, which only took them five years to get another
- 52:43billion after the first billion. You know, Kurt Cobain, Not my
- 52:46favorite Seattle band, not my favorite guy, but inarguably an
- 52:51excellent band that had a profound impact on generations
- 52:54of musicians. People are still discovering
- 52:56this band, you know, very interesting stuff for some cool
- 53:03insight about and, and I mean, of course, like Mark Lanigan,
- 53:06Seattle's had so many people pass away.
- 53:09I don't really have a good photo of Mark that I'm able to use but
- 53:12legally, but Mark is also hugely important to me, you know, would
- 53:19be one of them. You know, Kurt, I remember where
- 53:21I was when he passed away too, was a shockwave when he died.
- 53:24It was horrifying. This is kind of the halfway
- 53:29point of the show. So yeah, once again, if you want
- 53:32to donate some money to us, here's our cash app on the
- 53:35screen. We also take super chats and
- 53:38super likes. I need to.
- 53:40I'll talk about this more tomorrow on later today on the
- 53:42live stream about enabling subscriptions and what I plan to
- 53:46do with the subscription model for us last month, maybe a month
- 53:50before Lenny was unveiled. Yep, I'm going to go someday.
- 53:53Pretty close to me. Used to live.
- 53:54Alright, Sheridan, checking in from perhaps the UK or from the
- 53:58UK. Nice to meet you.
- 54:00Thanks for sharing that comment. I appreciate you and I
- 54:03appreciate you being part of this conversation.
- 54:06Yeah, Doug McCarthy, very sad for me, man.
- 54:09And yeah, again, this is our tip menu.
- 54:10I should update this for tomorrow.
- 54:12But anyhow, 2:30 in the AM on the Pacific Coast, I got to go
- 54:16to bed soon. But this is almost over.
- 54:18Obviously again beside Douglas, Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys
- 54:23passed away or announced he passed away today.
- 54:26Sliced stone earlier this week. I don't know if you were MTV
- 54:30watchers of like the last, you know, 25 years, Inaga Lewis
- 54:34passed away from breast cancer or after a bout with breast
- 54:38cancer. That's just we're losing people
- 54:40left and right and, you know, listen, Brian.
- 54:44Oh, Slashes from there. That's Stoke Stoke on Trent,
- 54:46right, Killer slash and his mom, who Tiny Dancer is about his
- 54:52mom, by the way, Slashes mom. I don't know if a lot of people
- 54:55know that, but so, yeah, man, Sly Stone, we're losing a lot of
- 55:03our heroes and I'm really worried about Ozzy.
- 55:07I know I had a picture of Ozzy earlier with the Randy Rhodes
- 55:09plaque. Really, really concerned about
- 55:15Ozzy. Like he even said, I hope I can
- 55:17even, you know, I'm trying my best to get into shape to do a
- 55:20few songs, but can I even do it? I don't even know if I'll make
- 55:24it. Like, that's so upsetting.
- 55:25I'm not ready to live without Ozzy.
- 55:27You don't know. Here's another couple of ones,
- 55:31just a few more to run out the string on this.
- 55:35Nick Menza. There's a documentary about Nick
- 55:37coming out. This was My Life by Ellson
- 55:40Films, made by David Ellison, his former band mate in
- 55:43Megadeth. This picture makes me happy and
- 55:46sad. Nick being Nick and the NAMM
- 55:48show and the taker of this photograph, Molina Dellamongio,
- 55:53who worked for Ghost Called, died just a few months after
- 55:56Nick died, a few months after this photo was taken.
- 55:59So this photo was taken in January 2016.
- 56:02Nick passes away, has a heart attack on stage in LA at the
- 56:05baked potato, dies. Molina passed away a few months
- 56:11later. Just a terrible chain of events
- 56:13and always kind of forever linked for me.
- 56:16But Molina was wonderful. We've had some wonderful
- 56:18staffers that lost their lives with us and I again am very
- 56:24fortunate to do what I do and know the people I know.
- 56:26Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence died terribly.
- 56:33Was nice. I met him a few times.
- 56:35I wasn't the hugest Suicide Silence fan but the band has
- 56:39continued on with Eddie Hermita from OSHA Parish and Mitch by
- 56:43all accounts was a nice guy and a real big booster to the scene
- 56:48in smaller bands. Not sure if any of you all out
- 56:52there were fans. Reed Mullen This is another one.
- 56:55I love Corrosion and Conformity and Reed Mullen.
- 57:00This is one of the last times we ever covered him and he died.
- 57:04He also had some demons, but his health kind of gave out on him
- 57:08before he could turn his demons around.
- 57:10COC is an incredible band and I love his drumming and he was AI.
- 57:15Don't know how many people are legends across a few different
- 57:17genres, but in terms of Stoner doom, Stoner rock, thrash, and
- 57:23punk, Reed is one of those dudes.
- 57:27He definitely was a great dude. I have a picture of me and him
- 57:30somewhere on one of my other accounts.
- 57:34This is a thumbnail from YouTube.
- 57:36But it's just like this is a very common photo people have of
- 57:40of dead and Euronymous from Mayhem, right?
- 57:42A dead took his own life. We've seen Lords of cats.
- 57:45We've read the book. I wish someone had killed Barg
- 57:48instead of bark killing Euronymous.
- 57:50But you know, you can't have first wave black metal without
- 57:54these guys. And whatever you think about
- 57:57Mayhem today, the entire black metal scene owes these two guys
- 58:03specifically. Dad was incredible,
- 58:05one-of-a-kind as a vocalist, too.
- 58:07And he probably would have developed even further had he
- 58:09not died. And, you know, we never know.
- 58:12Eronymous might have, you know, come back to the band or come
- 58:16rekindled the band at some point.
- 58:19Jimmy the Reb Sullivan of Avenged Sevenfold died in 2009.
- 58:25It's hard to believe it's going to be 16 years at Christmas
- 58:29time. Guy was incredibly talented,
- 58:33only 28 years old when he died and really was the the brains of
- 58:38that band for a long time or so. I've been Sunfold a few times
- 58:41with Jimmy and a few times since without, and I appreciate that
- 58:46they pay tribute to him multiple ways, multiple songs.
- 58:50Probably some of the best fans I've ever seen ever is Avenged
- 58:54Sevenfold fans. I know that may sound like a
- 58:55surprise to you all, but I really do think they have some
- 58:58of the best fans. Clean Purple Unicorn has passed
- 59:02by. Hello Lynyrd Skynyrd.
- 59:05This is not that album, this is the debut album.
- 59:07So it's not this exact band that had the plane crash.
- 59:10But obviously, you know, we lost many members of Lynyrd Skynyrd
- 59:15in that fateful plane crash after St.
- 59:17Survivors and that prophetic album cover.
- 59:19But Lynyrd Skynyrd managed to continue on to this day with a
- 59:24different cast of people and you know, they they turn tragedy
- 59:30into a positive story, which is admirable.
- 59:34Lynyrd Skynyrd, who knows what more great music they would have
- 59:38made. You know, if that crash should
- 59:41not happen. Chuck Mosley.
- 59:44I'm a huge Faith No More fan. And Chuck is the original singer
- 59:49or the best known original singer of Faith No More.
- 59:52Obviously on Introduce Yourself Clearly Patton comes in and
- 59:57rejuvenates the band to a different level.
- 59:59But you know what a great vocalist and and a fun front man
- 1:00:02he was and really encapsulated the spirit of the early band,
- 1:00:06especially whether it was his lyrics or Roddy's.
- 1:00:15So yeah, rest in power, Chuck. Eddie Leeway died just recently.
- 1:00:21Leeway is one of the most inspirational and original
- 1:00:25hardcore and crossover thrash bands ever.
- 1:00:29Just very sad Eddie's health problems caught up with him
- 1:00:31after many years. We also lost Todd Youth who was
- 1:00:35one of my favourite interviews ever.
- 1:00:37I don't really have a a handy picture of Todd but the guy was
- 1:00:41beast as a songwriter and a beautiful person.
- 1:00:44I, I miss that guy. Also, this is the statue of
- 1:00:47Stevie Ray Vaughan in Austin, TX.
- 1:00:50I've never been to Austin. Tell me if you have if you are
- 1:00:52from there or have been there. You know, Stevie Ray kind of was
- 1:00:57hailed as the second coming of, of Jimmy in a lot of ways, at
- 1:01:01least as a Blues man. He was, you know, likened to
- 1:01:04Paige, Clapton and Beck for his guitar prowess.
- 1:01:07And he died tragically in that helicopter crash in 1990.
- 1:01:14And he's still revered in Texas for his plan, his Blues plan.
- 1:01:20VTech from Decapitated. There's quite a few death metal
- 1:01:23people on this list. Of course, we talked about
- 1:01:25Chuck. I think the tragedy of VTech
- 1:01:28dying so young and after really doing a masterpiece.
- 1:01:33I don't know one death metal head that can't name Spears of
- 1:01:36Madness and that riff we have, we may have some concert footage
- 1:01:41of that coming up soon here in the channel on YouTube.
- 1:01:44I'm glad Decapitating got to continue with their career with
- 1:01:48Vog his brother. But what a loss again to lose
- 1:01:50your brother and could carry on without him.
- 1:01:53Just such a young guy, you know, just just very young, 23 years
- 1:01:59old when he died. Here is Joy Division and Ian
- 1:02:03Curtis in the centre. A little bum to see Joy Division
- 1:02:06slash New Order. Not get in the Hall of Fame this
- 1:02:09year, but fuck the Hall of Fame anyway.
- 1:02:12Ian Curtis really special as a front man and lyricist and
- 1:02:15vocalist and we really didn't get some get his full bore of
- 1:02:20talents. Do you recommend seeing the Joy
- 1:02:24Division movie that's out there? I thought it was pretty well
- 1:02:27done. This is valfar from Windier.
- 1:02:33Windier is one of the original second wave Norwegian black
- 1:02:38metal bands and such an important important band.
- 1:02:45Windier. I forget what it means in
- 1:02:51folklore, in Norse it might mean Blizzard, I'm not sure.
- 1:02:58But you know what an incredible band Terje Valfor Bakken is His
- 1:03:03name and members of Windier went on to to Front Ride and Mr. and
- 1:03:09course corporally. This guy was incredible.
- 1:03:12Windier is a band you definitely have not heard enough of and you
- 1:03:15need to go and check out if you love old school black metal.
- 1:03:22I just found this is this is heartbreaking.
- 1:03:24So one of my favorite industrial metal bands is God Lives
- 1:03:27Underwater and this is David Riley.
- 1:03:29And I just found out going down like a rabbit hole about God
- 1:03:32Lives Underwater, which I listen to all the time, literally every
- 1:03:36week. And I just now realized that he
- 1:03:38died like 20 years ago. Just what the fuck?
- 1:03:45Put out tons of music, mostly unknown, produced and remixed a
- 1:03:49lot of other people. Was signed to Rick Rubin's
- 1:03:53American Recordings and they had a couple of hits and MTV hits
- 1:03:57even in the post MTV hit age. And then he just kind of
- 1:04:01vanished. Very sad.
- 1:04:05Then a few more people who are not rocker metal but just maybe
- 1:04:09they touched your life or maybe their music was important to
- 1:04:11you. Obviously Biggie Smalls and
- 1:04:13Tupac, the two poles polar opposites of of hip hop in the
- 1:04:1890s. I'm personally more of a Tupac
- 1:04:20person in terms of quality and talent, but Biggie was hugely
- 1:04:23important. I'm from the East Coast.
- 1:04:25Pock is also originally from the East Coast, but he's obviously
- 1:04:28associated with the West Coast rap.
- 1:04:29Amy Winehouse, Phenomenal voice. I host some karaoke every Sunday
- 1:04:33and a lot of people sing a lot of Amy Winehouse stuff, so I
- 1:04:36kind of gotten a new appreciation for her talent.
- 1:04:40She was always, I thought, a great vocalist, but I didn't
- 1:04:42really wasn't listening to a lot of pop music back, you know, 15,
- 1:04:4720 years ago. I was really just listening to
- 1:04:49what I listened to and, and I like a lot of stuff that's not
- 1:04:52pop. I didn't mention any jazz
- 1:04:54artists here. And I have an encyclopedic
- 1:04:56knowledge of all errors of jazz. And I didn't bring up anybody.
- 1:05:00And I could have, you know, Body Count has lost a ton of band
- 1:05:05members. I didn't mention them.
- 1:05:06There's a bunch of people we didn't bring in, but Selena,
- 1:05:10Selena's hugely influential and important.
- 1:05:14She would have been probably by now on the level of a Taylor
- 1:05:17Swift or a Beyoncé. And she not been murdered.
- 1:05:20Very sad. Sinead O'Connor died recently.
- 1:05:24Again, very sad, tragic and hard fought life.
- 1:05:28And I'm really amazing singer and spirit and soul and they're
- 1:05:33just going too soon, just gone too soon, too good for the world
- 1:05:36and gone too soon. And George Michael, not at all
- 1:05:38rock or metal, but honestly a personal favorite of mine.
- 1:05:41I love George Michael to a level you can't understand and just an
- 1:05:47incredible singer and I never got to see him.
- 1:05:49That's my bad. So I'll I'll leave on that note.
- 1:05:53That is the show again, if you're watching this now, if
- 1:05:57you're watching this on a replay, leave a comment on our
- 1:06:00socials. Wherever this video shows up for
- 1:06:02you, wherever you watch this, tell me your most heartbreaking
- 1:06:07death in rock and metal or not rock and metal, whatever.
- 1:06:10Fish, Penny Zappa, Andre Segovia.
- 1:06:14Maybe it's Beethoven, you know, maybe it's Janis Joplin, maybe
- 1:06:19it's Jim Morrison, the 27 Club, maybe it's Kurt Cobain.
- 1:06:25Lance Daily. Absolutely.
- 1:06:27Elaine was at the top of the show here.
- 1:06:29Thanks for chiming in there here late.
- 1:06:31I appreciate you. You know it's overnight here in
- 1:06:34the West Coast. I'm going to go to bed soon.
