- 2:44Speaker 2: goes on, Alex, Welcome to Hurdle, Hi, thank you so
- 2:47Speaker 2: much for having me.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Oh my god, no brainer. I'm so excited to be here.
- 2:52Speaker 3: You are genuinely excited to be here. I am.
- 2:54Speaker 2: It took you, It took you a while to get here, girl, girl.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I mean this traffic. People say that LA traffic is
- 3:02Speaker 1: worse than New York.
- 3:03Speaker 3: No, it's not.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Well, that's because they're not commuting from the Hudson Valley
- 3:07Speaker 2: to New York City on the regular correct, okay.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Correct, but the Hudson Valley parks to New York City. Fine,
- 3:13Speaker 1: it's when you're in like New York, like Manhattan, going
- 3:15Speaker 1: to Brooklyn or something. I'm like, no, there's no way
- 3:17Speaker 1: that LA is worse. There's no way. Yeah, I was
- 3:19Speaker 1: like two miles away for three hours. I was like,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I'm almost normally two miles away.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Oh my god.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And that's the worst because it really can take you
- 3:27Speaker 2: like an hour an hour and a half to go
- 3:28Speaker 2: like four or five miles here.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great. So crazy.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Everyone thinks I'm nuts because they're like, why don't you
- 3:33Speaker 1: live in New York City. But I'm telling you, I
- 3:35Speaker 1: would never stop if I live down here. Do you imagine, Yeah, Like,
- 3:39Speaker 1: I would never stop.
- 3:40Speaker 2: That's an entrepreneurial perk and con sometimes one hundred percent.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It's great that you.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Have that willingness to like, go, go go, But do
- 3:51Speaker 2: you feel like that catches up with you often?
- 3:53Speaker 3: Oh, one hundred percent.
- 3:54Speaker 1: I mean this was something that I was dealing with,
- 3:56Speaker 1: Like right before COVID, I hit a major, major burnout,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and then when COVID happened. At first, I freaked out
- 4:02Speaker 1: during the pandemic, but then I was like, oh my god,
- 4:05Speaker 1: it's kind of nice. Yeah.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I was like, I get to breathe.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I was like, I get to like not commute every
- 4:11Speaker 1: day and not carry my kit and not answer all
- 4:13Speaker 1: these emails. I'm just outside and I'm hiking and I'm
- 4:16Speaker 1: I mean, I know it wasn't like that for everybody.
- 4:17Speaker 1: I don't want to be sensitive to you know, other
- 4:19Speaker 1: people that went through it, but yeah, I definitely need
- 4:24Speaker 1: to be in nature for sure to recharge.
- 4:28Speaker 3: At first. Was that difficult for you?
- 4:30Speaker 2: That stark contrast from being so busy, busy, busy to
- 4:35Speaker 2: actually having the freedom to have some more of your
- 4:38Speaker 2: time back to yourself.
- 4:40Speaker 1: One hundred percent. But it was also a huge wake
- 4:43Speaker 1: up call. Right, So I went from going, going, going.
- 4:47Speaker 1: I didn't realize how unhealthy I was, and like my
- 4:50Speaker 1: nervous system was shot. I was saying yes to every
- 4:53Speaker 1: little thing, which I do feel like you have to
- 4:56Speaker 1: do in business and as an entrepreneur when you're growing
- 4:59Speaker 1: your company, you do have to say yes. You do
- 5:01Speaker 1: have to put in years and hard work and you know,
- 5:05Speaker 1: many years of hustle and grind, Like.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I think that's really important.
- 5:09Speaker 1: But once I had that time to rest and recover,
- 5:13Speaker 1: as like, oh my inflammation's gone. Oh, I feel energized,
- 5:19Speaker 1: Like I had an awakening for sure. So now I
- 5:22Speaker 1: really look forward to going back home and going upstate
- 5:26Speaker 1: into my little sanctuary. I have my red light, I
- 5:29Speaker 1: have my saana, I have you know, a yard, which
- 5:32Speaker 1: is nice, and I'm like, okay, I can recharge and
- 5:34Speaker 1: then when I need to come back down here to
- 5:36Speaker 1: like hustle, grind, do makeup, do all the things, and
- 5:38Speaker 1: I'm present and able to do it.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you said my inflammation was gone. Talk to me
- 5:44Speaker 2: about what that looked like practically.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Oh, I mean I do have some autoimmune things. I
- 5:51Speaker 1: didn't know that I had endometriosis, but I because I
- 5:55Speaker 1: was going, going, going, I wasn't properly taking care of myself.
- 5:59Speaker 3: This is pre COVID.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Right during COVID, I caught my nervous system. I was
- 6:05Speaker 1: eating better, I was cooking all my meals. I was outside,
- 6:08Speaker 1: I was in the sun, I was doing all the things,
- 6:11Speaker 1: and I noticed that I felt so much better. And
- 6:14Speaker 1: then once I started working again, flying, traveling all over
- 6:19Speaker 1: the place, I was still definitely being more aware of
- 6:24Speaker 1: taking care of my body. However, it started to come back.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And then do you know Gaby Bernstein? Okay, so she's
- 6:32Speaker 1: a dear friend and a client of mine. I was
- 6:33Speaker 1: doing her makeup and she's like, you need to get
- 6:36Speaker 1: a scan. And I was like, why, this is kind
- 6:39Speaker 1: of weird. This is a little wooo. I don't know
- 6:40Speaker 1: if you guys like talk like this.
- 6:41Speaker 3: I talked about.
- 6:43Speaker 1: She's so my dad passed away when I was twenty four.
- 6:45Speaker 1: She was like, your dad just came to me and
- 6:49Speaker 1: told me that you have to get a scan.
- 6:51Speaker 3: And I was like, what do you mean? Am I dying?
- 6:54Speaker 3: Like this is crazy?
- 6:55Speaker 1: So do you know pernuvoh Okay, I wish it they
- 6:58Speaker 1: were like a sponsor of the show or something. They're
- 7:00Speaker 1: this would be like a great this would be a
- 7:02Speaker 1: great plug for them. So I like went online and
- 7:06Speaker 1: I got an appointment with Pernuvo, which is a preventative MRI,
- 7:11Speaker 1: and I went in like two days later, and they're like,
- 7:14Speaker 1: you have like these massive cysts around your ovaries and
- 7:18Speaker 1: that's what was like causing all this inflammation in my body,
- 7:21Speaker 1: especially when I was like going and not stopping maybe
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know, eating out too much and not sleeping and
- 7:27Speaker 1: the whole thing, and it was happening again. So I
- 7:30Speaker 1: was like, okay, but you go to the guy in
- 7:32Speaker 1: to collegists and they tell you you have cysts, you
- 7:33Speaker 1: don't really think it's a big deal because they don't
- 7:35Speaker 1: make it a big deal. Well, let me tell you something.
- 7:37Speaker 1: A week later, it was right before the Olympics in France.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I was supposed to go and it was going to
- 7:42Speaker 1: be so fun because I wasn't necessarily working. I was
- 7:45Speaker 1: there to have a good time and like all my clients,
- 7:47Speaker 1: all my friends, everyone was going. And then we were
- 7:50Speaker 1: going to extend a trip to Saint Tropez with my
- 7:53Speaker 1: other group of friends the day before we're about to leave,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I get the worst pain and I'm like, I have
- 8:00Speaker 1: to go to the hospital. And for me to go
- 8:03Speaker 1: to the hospital, I have to be in excruciating pain
- 8:06Speaker 1: and go to the hospital. And they're like, we need
- 8:09Speaker 1: to take your ovaries out now. I was like absolutely not.
- 8:13Speaker 2: No.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I was like, dang, I'm not like I might still
- 8:16Speaker 1: want kids. I don't know, like i'ven't thought about this,
- 8:19Speaker 1: you know. So I was like, no, you're not taking
- 8:21Speaker 1: my ovaries out, and they're like, no, your ovaries are twisted,
- 8:23Speaker 1: it's cutting off the oxygen supply to your organs, all
- 8:27Speaker 1: these things. I said no, and I had to sign
- 8:31Speaker 1: all his paperwork. I was there for like forty eight hours.
- 8:33Speaker 1: They're like, you can die. This is bad, and I
- 8:35Speaker 1: was like, it's okay, I'm going to figure it out.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I'll be fine.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So I had met Gabby Bernstein's cousin at one of
- 8:44Speaker 1: her dinner parties, who happens to be like this VP
- 8:47Speaker 1: over at m Mayou and he was like, oh, here's
- 8:51Speaker 1: my number if.
- 8:51Speaker 3: You ever need anything. I need something, So I like
- 8:54Speaker 3: tell you that he probably did.
- 8:54Speaker 1: He probably like gave me his number, not thinking I
- 8:56Speaker 1: would actually like call him. So I called him and
- 8:59Speaker 1: he he's like, oh honey, we got to get you in.
- 9:01Speaker 1: But they were able to get me in with a
- 9:03Speaker 1: top surgeon, thank god. And you know, I called my
- 9:06Speaker 1: friend Robin who owns Parsley Health and I sent her
- 9:09Speaker 1: my scams and she was like, Babe, is goda yep, yep.
- 9:12Speaker 1: She's like, baby, you gotta get you gotta get these
- 9:14Speaker 1: cysts out. But my surgeon went in and he was like,
- 9:17Speaker 1: you had stage four endometriosis that you were probably living
- 9:20Speaker 1: with for ten years and all of like the hustling
- 9:23Speaker 1: and not sleeping and you know, the grinding and not
- 9:26Speaker 1: taking care of yourself and eating out and drinking. He's
- 9:29Speaker 1: like that definitely like made this worse. He's like, I
- 9:32Speaker 1: don't know how you were going for so long. Good
- 9:35Speaker 1: news is they got everything out. They got out all
- 9:38Speaker 1: the endometriosis out, they got all the cysts out, and
- 9:40Speaker 1: they were able to save my ovaries, which was amazing.
- 9:43Speaker 1: So yeah, wow, yeah, CRAZYO.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Okay, well that's one way to start. Like That's why
- 9:50Speaker 2: I don't live in New York City.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I'm kidding. I need to be calm.
- 9:55Speaker 2: What a story, And thank you obviously for sharing about
- 9:59Speaker 2: your father. I know that he was a big part
- 10:01Speaker 2: of the reason why you got into holistic wellness to
- 10:04Speaker 2: start with.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Totally.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I mean not to be like morbid, but he just
- 10:09Speaker 1: basically dropped dead. Like he was young. He was fifty
- 10:12Speaker 1: two years old. We were so close, such a daddy's girl.
- 10:15Speaker 1: When my parents got divorced when I was fifteen, I
- 10:18Speaker 1: moved in with my dad like most girls are moving
- 10:20Speaker 1: in with their moms, you know, and like me and
- 10:21Speaker 1: my mom have a great relationship now, but I was
- 10:24Speaker 1: just such a daddy's girl.
- 10:25Speaker 3: He was so supportive.
- 10:27Speaker 1: I remember I would like do the simplest job, like
- 10:29Speaker 1: I would like powder a guy's head, like at like
- 10:32Speaker 1: a real estate firm, and he'd called me to be like,
- 10:34Speaker 1: we need to celebrate. That's amazing, Like you're doing such
- 10:37Speaker 1: a great job. So when he had a massive stroke,
- 10:41Speaker 1: that was a huge wake up call for me, and
- 10:43Speaker 1: I was like, Okay, wow, I need to really focus
- 10:45Speaker 1: on health and wellness. And it actually ties into working
- 10:49Speaker 1: with athletes because these athletes are really taking care of
- 10:51Speaker 1: their bodies, and I'm like, this is the type of
- 10:54Speaker 1: clientele that I want to be surrounded by. I love
- 10:56Speaker 1: working in the wellness community. I love working in the
- 10:58Speaker 1: athletic space. I love working with people in the mindfulness world.
- 11:04Speaker 1: So I'm like, this is great because this is like
- 11:07Speaker 1: the energy that I need to be around. So it
- 11:11Speaker 1: just feels very aligned.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Very aligned. Yeah, and I'm sure this was in twenty fifteen. Yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 2: so I'm sure that that wasn't the immediate way that
- 11:20Speaker 2: you process this. Oh, totally, talk to me about how
- 11:24Speaker 2: you navigated your grief at the time and what you've
- 11:27Speaker 2: learned about navigating grief with time.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Okay, Wow.
- 11:32Speaker 1: So when everything first went down, I was like, I
- 11:38Speaker 1: have to grow up quick because I was living in
- 11:41Speaker 1: my dad's house. My dad was still paying for my
- 11:43Speaker 1: stuff I was twenty four years old, like my car
- 11:45Speaker 1: bill or my car payment, my phone bill. And everyone's like, okay,
- 11:49Speaker 1: well you need to move out. And I was like,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm not moving out. This is my house, like just
- 11:54Speaker 1: because my dad's not here now, like I can't leave,
- 11:57Speaker 1: Like I told my animals there, my stuff was there,
- 11:59Speaker 1: like that's all I knew. So I had to learn
- 12:02Speaker 1: how to pivot real quick and grow up real quick.
- 12:05Speaker 1: And I was like, Okay, I need to build credit
- 12:08Speaker 1: and I need to learn about finances, and I need
- 12:10Speaker 1: to learn about paying bills. And also maybe I want
- 12:15Speaker 1: to surround myself with different types of people. Maybe I
- 12:18Speaker 1: don't want to surround myself with like the small town
- 12:20Speaker 1: gossipy clique, Like that's not me anymore. I just went
- 12:24Speaker 1: through something so major, so traumatic, and I want to
- 12:28Speaker 1: surround myself with people that are growing, people that are learning,
- 12:32Speaker 1: people that are traveling the world and having bigger conversations,
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, people that are thinking outside the box, people
- 12:38Speaker 1: that have been through things in their life. So I
- 12:41Speaker 1: had a very drastic change, like it was releasing a
- 12:44Speaker 1: lot of people that didn't serve me anymore and really
- 12:48Speaker 1: honing in on my career. I was doing makeup at
- 12:51Speaker 1: the time, but I was like, Okay, I need to
- 12:53Speaker 1: turn this into a real business. I need to structure
- 12:57Speaker 1: my company where I'm really going to thrive and make money.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I need to learn how to build the credit and
- 13:02Speaker 1: buy the house and learn that. You know, the garbage
- 13:06Speaker 1: bill is a thing I thought. I was like, who,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you have to pay for the garbage bill? I was like,
- 13:11Speaker 1: doesn't that come out with of our taxes or something.
- 13:14Speaker 1: It was a big learning experience for me, but I
- 13:17Speaker 1: grew up really quick, and I really fell in love
- 13:21Speaker 1: with all the people I was meeting and all the
- 13:23Speaker 1: places I was traveling to and the experiences I was having,
- 13:26Speaker 1: and you know, just my brand, my business. It turned
- 13:29Speaker 1: into my baby and I love it and I'm so
- 13:32Speaker 1: protective over it. And you know, now I have a
- 13:34Speaker 1: team of twenty two girls that worked for me, and
- 13:36Speaker 1: they're all so amazing. They're incredible, and I just love them,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and like, they love the company so much, and I'm
- 13:44Speaker 1: so grateful. And so I was able to turn that
- 13:48Speaker 1: really negative experience into something so positive.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, And such a challenging thing to do when
- 13:57Speaker 2: there are so many emotions present, totally, and so for
- 14:02Speaker 2: you now to have gone through that hurdle and then
- 14:05Speaker 2: be able to emerge on the other side with tangible
- 14:08Speaker 2: lessons that really have impacted you and helped you not
- 14:12Speaker 2: only as an entrepreneur within your business, but as a human,
- 14:17Speaker 2: it's invaluable, totally.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, you spoke about really understanding the type of person
- 14:43Speaker 2: that you wanted to surround yourself with, but bigger than that, Yes,
- 14:47Speaker 2: you can surround yourself with all of the great people
- 14:49Speaker 2: in the world, but you're still going to have to
- 14:51Speaker 2: do that inner work. Talk to you a little bit
- 14:54Speaker 2: about what your journey to working on your own personal
- 14:58Speaker 2: development has looked.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Like.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I was alone a lot and I still am. Yea,
- 15:02Speaker 1: I have a lot of solitude, and I think it's important.
- 15:06Speaker 1: This is something that I love about my commute because again, like, yes,
- 15:09Speaker 1: can we be sitting in traffic for three hours? Is
- 15:12Speaker 1: the commute crazy?
- 15:13Speaker 3: Sometimes?
- 15:14Speaker 1: Of course, However, I honor and love that alone time
- 15:19Speaker 1: so much because that's my thinking time. Whether I want
- 15:22Speaker 1: to put on a podcast and like learn something, whether
- 15:25Speaker 1: I want to just sit in silence, whether I want
- 15:26Speaker 1: to like daydream and think of ideas for my business
- 15:30Speaker 1: or for my life or manifest things. I have to say,
- 15:33Speaker 1: I do consider myself a really good manifestor.
- 15:36Speaker 3: But I really had to sit.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Alone and really get clear with my thoughts and my
- 15:43Speaker 1: intentions and the things that I wanted in my life,
- 15:46Speaker 1: and also figure out who I was too. I went
- 15:49Speaker 1: on retreats. I went on a yoga meditation retreat in Thailand.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I went to another retreat up in Woodstock. Didn't know anybody,
- 15:59Speaker 1: just you know, I met a wonderful group of people
- 16:01Speaker 1: and everyone was there by themselves, not knowing anyone, a
- 16:04Speaker 1: lot of therapy, a lot of life coaches. Do you
- 16:09Speaker 1: know saw De Simone?
- 16:10Speaker 3: I do. Yeah, he helped me a lot. He was
- 16:13Speaker 3: my life coach for a few years, Okay.
- 16:15Speaker 1: And then honestly just traveling, traveling and hearing other people's
- 16:21Speaker 1: experiences in life and knowing that other people have gone
- 16:24Speaker 1: through it and in so many different ways, and just
- 16:27Speaker 1: knowing that life is short and not again not to
- 16:32Speaker 1: sound morbid, but it's like, just go experience everything that
- 16:36Speaker 1: you can travel like, and that's another thing, like I
- 16:40Speaker 1: never want to judge people, and I know, like we're human,
- 16:43Speaker 1: we're judgmental beings, but I'm like, I just want to
- 16:46Speaker 1: be so open minded and understanding to everyone and everything.
- 16:50Speaker 1: And it's also allowed me to have so much compassion
- 16:53Speaker 1: and empathy for people and really just listening to people.
- 16:59Speaker 1: And yeah, I would say a lot of a lot
- 17:04Speaker 1: of experiences traveling in solitude. Yeah, has been it so helpful?
- 17:08Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 17:09Speaker 2: I would be remiss if we didn't double click on
- 17:12Speaker 2: I am such a good manifestor now, I mean you're
- 17:16Speaker 2: going to say that, and you also can't drop that
- 17:19Speaker 2: you're friendly with Gabby Bernstein and then be like and
- 17:22Speaker 2: I'm also such a good manifestor, like obviously you are. Yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 2: So what does being a good manifestor look like for
- 17:29Speaker 2: you in practice? And what do you feel like you
- 17:32Speaker 2: can offer people who are interested in also becoming good
- 17:35Speaker 2: manifestors themselves.
- 17:36Speaker 1: So I believe that you have to fully believe that
- 17:40Speaker 1: whatever you want to manifest is already yours, and you
- 17:43Speaker 1: have to just claim it and own it and act
- 17:45Speaker 1: with confidence. I've always been big into vision boarding. I
- 17:49Speaker 1: like to call them execution boards, okay, because it's not
- 17:53Speaker 1: so much just like pictures that I'm going to look
- 17:57Speaker 1: at on this board and then one day, poof, it's
- 17:59Speaker 1: going to happen, Like I have to execute and have
- 18:01Speaker 1: all these micro goals to hit these macro goals right.
- 18:05Speaker 1: But for instance, like I had put Sarah Blakeley, I
- 18:09Speaker 1: had put a picture of her on a vision board.
- 18:11Speaker 1: This was like I think in maybe twenty eighteen or
- 18:14Speaker 1: twenty nineteen, and all of a sudden her name started
- 18:19Speaker 1: coming up in conversation a lot, and I started like
- 18:21Speaker 1: reading about her a lot. I was super inspired by
- 18:24Speaker 1: her story. She had lost one of her closest girlfriends
- 18:27Speaker 1: when she was younger, and I had lost a really
- 18:29Speaker 1: one of my best friends as well, so I really
- 18:33Speaker 1: resonated with her story and thought like her entrepreneurial journey
- 18:38Speaker 1: was so incredible. So put her on my vision board
- 18:42Speaker 1: and you know, talking about her as if I'm just
- 18:45Speaker 1: going to meet her one day whatever. And Sharon as
- 18:47Speaker 1: my boyfriend at the time. He gets an email and
- 18:51Speaker 1: he was a photographer, but no offense to him at all.
- 18:54Speaker 1: He was not like a well known like his photos
- 18:57Speaker 1: were of me for my Instagram. Somehow, someway, he had
- 19:02Speaker 1: gotten an email and it was something with Sarah Blakeley
- 19:06Speaker 1: for her family reunion, and I was like, I'm coming
- 19:08Speaker 1: with you, because I was like this can't be like
- 19:10Speaker 1: the Sarah blake like, there's no way, but just in case,
- 19:12Speaker 1: I'm coming with you.
- 19:14Speaker 3: And I went.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Sure enough, we were at her house and met her,
- 19:17Speaker 1: met her husband, Jesse, and then he started photographing a
- 19:21Speaker 1: bunch of events for them and the hill, the hell
- 19:24Speaker 1: on the Hill, you know what I'm talking about. And
- 19:26Speaker 1: then I became friends with Jesse's assistant at the time, Amanda,
- 19:30Speaker 1: who's absolutely incredible and we're still really great friends. And
- 19:35Speaker 1: it was just so crazy. I'm like, wow, I literally
- 19:37Speaker 1: put her on my vision board like six months ago,
- 19:40Speaker 1: and now I'm in her kitchen and I'm with her
- 19:43Speaker 1: whole family and becoming such good friends with Amanda, who's
- 19:47Speaker 1: Jesse's assistant.
- 19:48Speaker 3: It was just so like what a bizarre moment.
- 19:51Speaker 1: And like another thing that comes to mind is Gabby,
- 19:53Speaker 1: Like I read all of her books on Manifestation. I
- 19:56Speaker 1: remember my dad was actually reading one of her books
- 20:00Speaker 1: before he had passed away, and I was like, you know,
- 20:03Speaker 1: I went to her book talk. I went to one
- 20:05Speaker 1: of her talks, and again everything she was saying was
- 20:07Speaker 1: resonating with me so much, and I was like, I
- 20:09Speaker 1: really want to be this woman's makeup artist one day.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I want to be like friends with her. And I
- 20:14Speaker 1: started to visualize it. And I have a picture of
- 20:19Speaker 1: her signing my book like my friend like took it,
- 20:21Speaker 1: and I was like so excited waiting in line listening
- 20:24Speaker 1: to her talk, getting my book signed by her. Yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 1: And you know, fast forward a couple of years, We're
- 20:29Speaker 1: at a wedding and she's at the wedding and she
- 20:33Speaker 1: comes up to me. She's like, did you do the
- 20:34Speaker 1: bride's makeup? I was like, yeah, I did. She was like,
- 20:38Speaker 1: your makeup work is incredible. She was like, open your
- 20:42Speaker 1: calendar right now and see if you're free for Veronica
- 20:44Speaker 1: Beard shoot next week. Yeah, And I was like, shit,
- 20:47Speaker 1: I was like, my schedule so booked. I'm so like,
- 20:49Speaker 1: there was no way I opened my schedule. It was
- 20:51Speaker 1: like the only day, the only time slot that I
- 20:53Speaker 1: had open. So I went and dinner makeup. She loved it.
- 20:57Speaker 3: That was years ago, and now she's one of my
- 20:59Speaker 3: greatest friends.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Like it's not just like me traveling with her to
- 21:02Speaker 1: do her makeup, but she's become like a sister.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Okay. So I'm like, manifestation. You really can manifest anything,
- 21:07Speaker 3: I think. Okay.
- 21:08Speaker 2: So what I'm hearing you say is that in order
- 21:11Speaker 2: to get what it is that you want, you have
- 21:13Speaker 2: to act like you already have it.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I have to act like you already have it. You
- 21:15Speaker 1: have to own it, okay, and be so confident with it. Right.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Some people call it a little delusional, but I just
- 21:20Speaker 1: think it's you know, I don't know, confidence, confidence, Yeah, confidence, yeah.
- 21:24Speaker 2: Yes, I love it. Yes, honey. Okay, so we love
- 21:27Speaker 2: the story. So we have you ever done Sarah Blakeley's makeup?
- 21:30Speaker 1: No, but I did do the makeup for Sneaks. Yeah, yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 1: for one of their shoots.
- 21:35Speaker 3: That's so good. Yeah, it was a lot.
- 21:36Speaker 1: I was like, we need to full circle. Yeah, one
- 21:38Speaker 1: hundred percent. Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
- 21:40Speaker 2: So now fast forward with me to how you started
- 21:46Speaker 2: to get into doing makeup for some of our favorite
- 21:50Speaker 2: female athletes.
- 21:52Speaker 3: So funny.
- 21:52Speaker 1: So I started working with male athletes first, and that
- 21:56Speaker 1: was just random word of mouth. I had done a
- 22:00Speaker 1: shoot with Carmelo Anthony probably like my god, twelve years ago,
- 22:03Speaker 1: maybe a little longer than that. Ye did something with
- 22:06Speaker 1: Derek Cheter Joe Namath, who is like a big Jets.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Guy Jets you know, you know that guy Broadway Joe Nope. Deal.
- 22:15Speaker 1: So I was in the world of athletes already. And
- 22:20Speaker 1: then I got a job at Bumble and Bumble doing
- 22:24Speaker 1: makeup for a lot of their campaigns.
- 22:25Speaker 3: And they had partnered.
- 22:27Speaker 1: With Ali Creeker, Yes, our girl, Our girl, and we
- 22:33Speaker 1: had a two day shoot with them, and we I mean,
- 22:36Speaker 1: when you're doing makeup for someone, it's such like a intimate.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I know, I can't wait to dive into this with you,
- 22:41Speaker 2: but continue, I mean, you're seeing them with no makeup.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Some people are comfortable with that. Some people, aren't. You know,
- 22:47Speaker 2: Once you become someone's makeup artists, you're in their home,
- 22:49Speaker 2: you're around their family, like you're it's like a very private,
- 22:53Speaker 2: vulnerable space. And I feel like this is why I
- 22:55Speaker 2: end up being friends with all of my clients, because
- 22:58Speaker 2: it's just such like a personal experience and I like
- 23:01Speaker 2: to hold a safe space for them.
- 23:03Speaker 1: But yeah, so I had met Ali this is probably
- 23:05Speaker 1: like eight years ago maybe, and then ever since that.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I mean it was you know, do the wedding makeup
- 23:12Speaker 1: and come with me here and do this and do that.
- 23:14Speaker 1: So she was the first female athlete I worked with,
- 23:20Speaker 1: like a few track track olympians before that. Yeah, but
- 23:25Speaker 1: she was the first athlete to really like want glam. Yeah,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and because not all the athletes want glam. They want
- 23:32Speaker 1: like something very soft, very natural, and I'm known for
- 23:35Speaker 1: a more natural look, but Ali was like, let's go glam.
- 23:38Speaker 1: So once I started working with her kind of opened
- 23:41Speaker 1: the doors and it was like, oh, you know, she's
- 23:43Speaker 1: friends with Pino and she's friends with Subird, and you
- 23:46Speaker 1: know Subird friends with Brianna Stewart and Brianna Stuart's friends
- 23:48Speaker 1: with Niara, and I just it just started to have
- 23:52Speaker 1: this ripple effect, you know, and just connecting with like
- 23:56Speaker 1: agents and becoming friends with people, and you know, working
- 24:00Speaker 1: with Mallory Swanson and doing her wedding makeup.
- 24:02Speaker 2: I do.
- 24:03Speaker 1: We do a lot of weddings. I have a bridal
- 24:05Speaker 1: aspect of the business as well. You know, we did
- 24:08Speaker 1: Lindsay Harand's wedding. And We've just entered the space of
- 24:12Speaker 1: female athletes and I feel so inspired by them and
- 24:16Speaker 1: I feel so excited to work with them. I love
- 24:20Speaker 1: that they're so on time, because no one really is.
- 24:23Speaker 1: They're so on time, they're so determined, they're so motivated,
- 24:26Speaker 1: and it inspires me. So I'm like, I want to
- 24:29Speaker 1: continue to work with female athletes as much as possible
- 24:32Speaker 1: because it's so fun and so inspiring, so inspiring.
- 24:36Speaker 3: Were any of these people on your vision board? No?
- 24:39Speaker 2: So when I say that back to you and you
- 24:42Speaker 2: think about what it is that you're doing, now, how
- 24:43Speaker 2: does that make you feel?
- 24:45Speaker 3: Well? I'm trying to think.
- 24:46Speaker 1: I did have sports on my vision board when I
- 24:50Speaker 1: think about it, but it wasn't like a specific athlete.
- 24:53Speaker 1: But I think it's because I mean, I played softball
- 24:55Speaker 1: growing up. I played for thirteen years and I really,
- 24:58Speaker 1: I still want to get back into it, like a
- 25:00Speaker 1: woman's leek. I can join, but like when do we
- 25:03Speaker 1: have the time for that? But yeah, I did have
- 25:06Speaker 1: sports on my vision board, so it's funny to like
- 25:09Speaker 1: reflect on that. Yeah, but now I just feel like
- 25:12Speaker 1: so in it now, Like I'm so in it right,
- 25:14Speaker 1: it's been eight years.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's incredible. It's incredible, Yeah, and I love it
- 25:17Speaker 2: for you. You mentioned the intimacy that comes with doing
- 25:21Speaker 2: people's makeup. The first question for that is, have you
- 25:26Speaker 2: ever arrived in a moment and realized just like how
- 25:29Speaker 2: much of the weight of it or how big of
- 25:32Speaker 2: a moment It was, like, have you ever been so
- 25:34Speaker 2: kind of thrown off your game arriving into a setting?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Me and Marita, who's Ali's hairstylist, we walked into the
- 25:41Speaker 1: New York Stock Exchange and we were like, oh my god,
- 25:44Speaker 1: we're the New York Stock Exchange. And we were there
- 25:46Speaker 1: at Nasdak ringing the bell. We were up there ringing
- 25:49Speaker 1: the bell and I was like, why are we here?
- 25:51Speaker 1: But like we're part of the crew, you know, like
- 25:53Speaker 1: of course you have to come up here, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 1: being in Times Square, Ali hosting the ball drop on
- 25:59Speaker 1: New Year's Eve. I always said, I was like, you
- 26:01Speaker 1: can never pay me to be in Times Square New
- 26:03Speaker 1: Year's You Well, I guess I could be bought.
- 26:07Speaker 3: I can be bought.
- 26:10Speaker 1: But yeah, Like there's been some really like crazy moments
- 26:14Speaker 1: for like us at the Emmy Awards or US wasn't
- 26:18Speaker 1: that Amy Wards yet, I think it was Emmy Awards.
- 26:19Speaker 3: You know, SP's haven't done.
- 26:21Speaker 1: SPI's which isn't done and the only reason why is
- 26:25Speaker 1: because I've just been booked with other things.
- 26:28Speaker 3: But hopefully next year he'll be there.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Yeah, but you know, like also traveling the world, like
- 26:32Speaker 1: going to Spain, we went to Bilbao, Can been to Can. Yeah,
- 26:38Speaker 1: I've like I've really traveled the world with these girls,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and you know, and Can was so fun. For Sport Beach,
- 26:44Speaker 1: we did Alex Morgan's glam we did Jen we did Ali,
- 26:48Speaker 1: like we just we had.
- 26:49Speaker 3: So much fun.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and just it it's like a pinch me moment.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I'm like, I can't believe this is what I get
- 26:54Speaker 1: to do.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I need to know, what's the craziest thing you've seen
- 27:14Speaker 2: inside of someone's home before.
- 27:16Speaker 1: The craziest thing that I have seen going into someone's
- 27:20Speaker 1: home is probably a club. No, like an actual like
- 27:24Speaker 1: party club.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Like they had an elevator that took you downstairs and
- 27:31Speaker 1: it opened up into a club with like all of
- 27:34Speaker 1: the lights and the sound systems and a DJ booth.
- 27:37Speaker 1: And I remember just thinking I was so confused. I
- 27:40Speaker 1: was like, is this like open to the public or
- 27:44Speaker 1: is this just this person's like their own club in
- 27:46Speaker 1: their house. Yeah, they had a club.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Well, I'm sure the house itself was very large. It
- 27:50Speaker 3: was large. Yes, it was a large house.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Yes, Okay, Well I want to pivot a little bit
- 27:54Speaker 2: and talk about how you get makeup to stay for
- 27:57Speaker 2: hours on end. You're working with a lot of individuals,
- 28:00Speaker 2: whether we're talking about getting ready before a game and
- 28:02Speaker 2: going out for play or going to events. These are
- 28:05Speaker 2: people that need their makeup to last. So give me
- 28:08Speaker 2: the rundown. What is the secret?
- 28:11Speaker 1: I feel like it's a pretty good mix of skin
- 28:15Speaker 1: prep but also strategy, like knowing what we're doing and
- 28:19Speaker 1: what look we're trying to achieve, right, and athletes they
- 28:24Speaker 1: need makeup that is going to move with them and
- 28:28Speaker 1: going to stay and work with them and not against them.
- 28:32Speaker 1: So I focus heavily on skin prep and barrier repair
- 28:38Speaker 1: and red light therapy and hydration, and we do a
- 28:42Speaker 1: little bit of facial massage, ice rolling lymphatic drainage before
- 28:46Speaker 1: we even touch the makeup part. So I just feel
- 28:50Speaker 1: like it's all about layering in a way that's breathable
- 28:54Speaker 1: and making their skin look like skin, but also something
- 28:58Speaker 1: that's gonna be long lasting. So I'll definitely use a
- 29:01Speaker 1: setting spray that will cater to the look that we're
- 29:06Speaker 1: doing on them. I'm not huge on powders, but if
- 29:10Speaker 1: I need to use a little bit of powder, I
- 29:11Speaker 1: will Wait, what is it that we have against powder?
- 29:14Speaker 1: I personally love a hydrating, glowing look, and I feel
- 29:18Speaker 1: like a lot of people can go a little overboard
- 29:20Speaker 1: with the powder. So if I do use powder, I
- 29:24Speaker 1: will use it on what I call like a microbrush,
- 29:28Speaker 1: so something that's small, like an eyeshadow brush, and just
- 29:32Speaker 1: really hit the hot spots where it's a little bit
- 29:35Speaker 1: oily or shiny, so maybe in the middle of the
- 29:37Speaker 1: forehead or on the sides of the nose or the chin,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and just with the smallest amount of powder, just hitting
- 29:44Speaker 1: those hot spots. But I feel like with the proper
- 29:48Speaker 1: setting spray that's going to give you a long lasting result.
- 29:52Speaker 1: I also think the biggest hack per SE is teaching
- 29:55Speaker 1: my clients how to maintain their look throughout the day,
- 29:58Speaker 1: so utilizing like all touch ups or like maybe there's
- 30:01Speaker 1: little blotting papers. For me personally, it's knowing that less
- 30:05Speaker 1: is actually more. So I always want the goal is
- 30:09Speaker 1: for their looks to be long lasting, but I don't
- 30:12Speaker 1: ever want it to feel like overdone or heavy, if
- 30:14Speaker 1: that makes sense.
- 30:15Speaker 2: What I'm hearing you say is that skin prep is
- 30:17Speaker 2: where it's at now. For a number of years, when
- 30:20Speaker 2: it came to athletes, we were seeing a lot of
- 30:22Speaker 2: no makeup makeup. And what I love about what's happening
- 30:25Speaker 2: right now is there's a really big synergy between makeup
- 30:30Speaker 2: companies women in sport. We're seeing Sephora sponsor Unrivaled. I
- 30:34Speaker 2: mean that's just one small example. How does this make
- 30:37Speaker 2: you feel? What are you feeling about the future collaborations
- 30:40Speaker 2: between glam and sport?
- 30:43Speaker 1: So I think that this is really exciting because I
- 30:46Speaker 1: feel like this generation of athletes understand that beauty can
- 30:51Speaker 1: be utilized as a tool. Makeup is not necessarily a mask, right,
- 30:56Speaker 1: And I feel like it's all about controlling the look
- 31:00Speaker 1: and controlling the narrative of how you want to feel.
- 31:03Speaker 1: These athletes now they're realizing they don't have to fit
- 31:06Speaker 1: into like one box and they can be strong and
- 31:09Speaker 1: they can be feminine and that can coexist at the
- 31:12Speaker 1: same time. So glam has become a way, I think,
- 31:17Speaker 1: to take ownership of their own story and their own narrative,
- 31:23Speaker 1: especially in a space that I feel like for a
- 31:26Speaker 1: long time didn't leave a lot of room for that.
- 31:29Speaker 1: For a long time, it was like, oh, it's an athlete,
- 31:31Speaker 1: Like they're just gonna want powder and you know, lip
- 31:34Speaker 1: bomb on their lips. And it's like, no, Like, you know,
- 31:37Speaker 1: some of these women, they want glam, they want flashes,
- 31:41Speaker 1: they want some blush. They I don't think it's more
- 31:45Speaker 1: so like they want to be transformed. But I feel
- 31:48Speaker 1: like when you look good, you feel good, and it's
- 31:52Speaker 1: more about like amplifying the look and showing the world
- 31:56Speaker 1: every side of who they are. And I'm just so
- 32:00Speaker 1: for it and I'm excited about it. And it's not
- 32:02Speaker 1: just the makeup, but it's also the hair, and it's
- 32:04Speaker 1: also the wardrobe too.
- 32:06Speaker 3: In terms of athletes, who would you say is doing
- 32:08Speaker 3: it well?
- 32:09Speaker 1: I mean, I'm definitely biased because I work with, like,
- 32:13Speaker 1: I mean, the most fabulous people, right, But Ali, who's
- 32:17Speaker 1: I mean, She's like one of my closest friends. But
- 32:19Speaker 1: I feel like working with her, I love her looks
- 32:23Speaker 1: like she you know, has the wardrobe, she has the hair,
- 32:27Speaker 1: she has the makeup, she has the lashes, she has
- 32:29Speaker 1: the whole thing. But also someone like Brianna Stewart, we
- 32:32Speaker 1: love some stewing, like we've really nailed down like her
- 32:35Speaker 1: look and what she feels most confident in and comfortable in,
- 32:38Speaker 1: and what photographs really nicely and what looks good on camera,
- 32:42Speaker 1: you know, what colors to enhance her blue eyes and
- 32:46Speaker 1: what you know, tones maybe to stay away from. So yeah,
- 32:50Speaker 1: I think, but also a lot of the girls, like
- 32:52Speaker 1: there's so many players in the WNBA, there's so many
- 32:56Speaker 1: players in you know, who play soccer and fall and tennis,
- 33:00Speaker 1: like just sports across the board that are stepping into
- 33:06Speaker 1: their looks and I am just so excited and here
- 33:09Speaker 1: for it.
- 33:10Speaker 2: You mentioned the WNBA, you also talked about the end
- 33:14Speaker 2: of USL. You are the guru for these girls when
- 33:18Speaker 2: it comes to makeup. You are someone that has been
- 33:21Speaker 2: referred time and time again. Why do you think that
- 33:24Speaker 2: that is why do you think you are such a
- 33:28Speaker 2: trusted person amongst these ladies.
- 33:31Speaker 1: I definitely think that team culture across the board with
- 33:37Speaker 1: these sports is everything, and these women truly do operate
- 33:42Speaker 1: like a family, and I feel like trust in these
- 33:47Speaker 1: circles are earned and not just given. And you when
- 33:52Speaker 1: you're traveling together and competing together and showing up for
- 33:56Speaker 1: each other every day, and then you know they might
- 33:59Speaker 1: referra or someone like me, or you know, one of
- 34:02Speaker 1: the hairstylists or one of the wardrobe stylists, I think
- 34:05Speaker 1: it means something different. And I think what resonated early
- 34:09Speaker 1: on was that I I started working with athletes many
- 34:12Speaker 1: years ago, and I really understood their world, and I
- 34:17Speaker 1: respected their time and their schedules and their boundaries and
- 34:22Speaker 1: just really started to build these relationships that all really
- 34:26Speaker 1: have turned into friendships. I never came in trying to
- 34:30Speaker 1: change who someone was, or you know, also reading the room,
- 34:33Speaker 1: like if someone is really uncomfortable with a lot of makeup,
- 34:36Speaker 1: we are not going to do a lot of makeup.
- 34:38Speaker 1: If someone is comfortable who really wants to cover up
- 34:41Speaker 1: some things on her face, we're going to cover up
- 34:43Speaker 1: some things on her face. So I think it's just
- 34:45Speaker 1: having clear communication and understanding and a level of being comfortable. Yeah,
- 34:51Speaker 1: and I feel like once a few of like the
- 34:54Speaker 1: key women trusted me, the rest kind of followed organically
- 34:59Speaker 1: and it's been great because I mean, these ladies have
- 35:02Speaker 1: been incredibly loyal too, which has been amazing, and we
- 35:06Speaker 1: have fun and I really try to understand, like I
- 35:08Speaker 1: don't do the same look on every single person. I
- 35:10Speaker 1: really try to sit down with them and look at
- 35:14Speaker 1: their face and see what is going to help with
- 35:18Speaker 1: making them feel the most beautiful, confident person on the field,
- 35:22Speaker 1: off the field, on the court, whatever it is. So yeah,
- 35:25Speaker 1: I think that the trust is really earned. It's really earned,
- 35:29Speaker 1: and we respect each other's boundaries and I show up
- 35:33Speaker 1: and they're dedicated.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I'm dedicated.
- 35:35Speaker 1: So I think word of mouth has just been the
- 35:38Speaker 1: absolute best way to dive deeper into sport. And I
- 35:44Speaker 1: just absolutely love supporting these women and being around them.
- 35:48Speaker 1: They inspire me. We have fun together and yeah.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Okay, so no two faces are the same, but do
- 35:55Speaker 2: you have like a standard process that you use.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Let me just start by saying that I absolutely love
- 36:01Speaker 1: working with Suebird. She's truly one of my favorite people
- 36:04Speaker 1: and we have the best conversations. But something that we
- 36:08Speaker 1: have developed over time is what we call the Sue
- 36:12Speaker 1: Bird method. So she basically okay, so sometimes she really
- 36:17Speaker 1: doesn't want any makeup, but other times we have to
- 36:21Speaker 1: do a little bit more, like when she's on Jimmy
- 36:23Speaker 1: Fallon or is filming for a documentary or something, and
- 36:26Speaker 1: also depends on like what she's wearing and how she's feeling.
- 36:29Speaker 1: So we developed the Suebird Method, which is like level
- 36:33Speaker 1: one is essentially skincare, So it's like we're really focusing
- 36:38Speaker 1: on the skin prep, maybe a little like eyebrow grooming,
- 36:41Speaker 1: maybe you know, some clear Misscara and some lip bomb,
- 36:46Speaker 1: like something like super clean, polished, no makeup. Then like
- 36:51Speaker 1: level two adds a little bit more refinement, right, so
- 36:54Speaker 1: it's like maybe like a little bit of like a
- 36:55Speaker 1: soft definition. Maybe we do like a light brown Misscara.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Maybe we do like a lip thint that's like so natural. Basically,
- 37:04Speaker 1: we have level one to level five, and like what
- 37:07Speaker 1: we call level five is like wedding glam. That's like
- 37:12Speaker 1: we're doing glam. So I think the highest we've ever
- 37:15Speaker 1: gone was a level four. I think it was on
- 37:18Speaker 1: Jimmy Fallon or Kelly Clarkson maybe both were like, she
- 37:22Speaker 1: let me put a few individual lashes on her, and
- 37:25Speaker 1: you know, we still did like very neutral tones. But
- 37:28Speaker 1: it's funny because now I use this subird method with
- 37:31Speaker 1: a lot of my clients. So it's just hilarious that
- 37:35Speaker 1: we've like developed this like method of glam.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Okay, I'm obsessed with this.
- 37:40Speaker 2: I'm also a massive Suebird fan as a Yukon alumni,
- 37:44Speaker 2: so and I know each other and I think I
- 37:47Speaker 2: don't know if she knows that she used my dream
- 37:49Speaker 2: guest for Hurdle, but she's truly like I would just
- 37:54Speaker 2: lose it if I had the opportunity to sit down
- 37:56Speaker 2: with her specifically for the show. We've had the chance
- 37:58Speaker 2: to chat in person before. But if you happen to
- 38:01Speaker 2: be listening to this too, this is my love letter
- 38:04Speaker 2: to you. Let's do some glam. Let's sit down and
- 38:08Speaker 2: let's have a chat for hurdle.
- 38:09Speaker 3: Yes, there you go. Maybe we'll probably do a level one.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Like glam is okay with me? Yeah, related, kind of unrelated.
- 38:18Speaker 2: Do you ever get starstruck?
- 38:20Speaker 3: Never? Really, I never get starstruck.
- 38:23Speaker 1: The only time that I had a moment that I
- 38:26Speaker 1: actually felt like a little taken back was when I
- 38:28Speaker 1: met Lady Gaga. I didn't do her makeup. I did
- 38:32Speaker 1: Zane Lowe's makeup. He's my client when he's in New York.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Love him.
- 38:36Speaker 1: He is amazing. He is the best interviewer, Like he
- 38:38Speaker 1: is fantastic. He's a creative director Apple Music, and I
- 38:42Speaker 1: just absolutely adore working with him. Yeah, and we're always
- 38:45Speaker 1: in the room with super powerful people. And there was
- 38:48Speaker 1: not that many people in the room with Gaga for
- 38:50Speaker 1: the interview, and it was several hours, and he knew.
- 38:54Speaker 1: I was like, this is my girl, Like I'm a
- 38:55Speaker 1: monster like lom Yeah, And I again did not get starstruck.
- 39:00Speaker 1: But I always said to myself, the moment I'm in
- 39:02Speaker 1: the same room as Lady Gaga is the moment I
- 39:05Speaker 1: know that like I've made it.
- 39:06Speaker 3: Yeah, But I'm like, did I make it? How did
- 39:09Speaker 3: I feel for you?
- 39:10Speaker 1: I was feeling like I don't know if I made it.
- 39:12Speaker 1: I'm like living in a home renovation and like me
- 39:14Speaker 1: and my boyfriend just broke up, and I'm like, oh
- 39:16Speaker 1: my god.
- 39:17Speaker 3: I was like, did I make it? I don't know.
- 39:18Speaker 1: But it was also super exciting at the same time,
- 39:20Speaker 1: and she's like so tiny and so beautiful and she
- 39:23Speaker 1: has such a strong presence, and I'm just I mean,
- 39:26Speaker 1: it's Gaga, Like who.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Doesn't love God? Who doesn't love gok you know.
- 39:29Speaker 1: But that was a really that was the only moment
- 39:32Speaker 1: I can think of that I was like, again, not starstruck,
- 39:36Speaker 1: but just like what's the word.
- 39:38Speaker 3: I mean, you're coming to terms with that.
- 39:41Speaker 2: You are literally living the life that you said hYP
- 39:44Speaker 2: like hypothetical, totally yeah, if I do this, it'll be wild.
- 39:48Speaker 3: And you're doing it. That's the thing.
- 39:50Speaker 1: It's like, you know, you you set these goals for
- 39:52Speaker 1: yourself and then you reach the goals and it's like, oh, well,
- 39:55Speaker 1: I guess I got to set a higher goal now.
- 39:58Speaker 1: So it's like you just keep growing and you keep climbing,
- 40:01Speaker 1: and you keep setting these goals for yourself. And I
- 40:03Speaker 1: think it's important too, because I think, you know, it's
- 40:06Speaker 1: important to celebrate the successes and when you reach a goal,
- 40:09Speaker 1: like you know, sit with it, honor it. But I
- 40:13Speaker 1: also think when we are too stagnant for a little
- 40:17Speaker 1: too long, like it could be a little depressing. So
- 40:19Speaker 1: it's like, okay, like hit the goal, Like now what yeah,
- 40:22Speaker 1: you know, so I think it's important to always continue
- 40:24Speaker 1: to set the standard tie yea and to continue climbing.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Was there a moment or an experience that taught you
- 40:30Speaker 2: that lesson specifically, maybe when you got okay with a
- 40:33Speaker 2: little bit of stagnation within your own life, whether it
- 40:36Speaker 2: be personally or professionally.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Not necessarily that I can think of. Then I'll flip this.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Would you say that this mentality of always setting the
- 40:46Speaker 2: next goal? Yes, you said it's important to celebrate, But
- 40:48Speaker 2: would you say that this mentality of what's next has
- 40:51Speaker 2: ever been difficult or detrimental to you?
- 40:53Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 40:54Speaker 3: I mean there's also been times where I don't stop.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, And it's like that's why I'm like,
- 40:58Speaker 1: it's so important to like honor that you accomplished a
- 41:01Speaker 1: goal and honor that you like, or let's celebrate like
- 41:05Speaker 1: you've reached something big, Like let's celebrate it.
- 41:07Speaker 3: But it's like you always like think that.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Your world's going to change once you hit this goal
- 41:12Speaker 1: or once you get something that you thought you wanted,
- 41:14Speaker 1: and it might feel really good for a minute, but
- 41:17Speaker 1: then it's like, okay, like it's important to do the
- 41:19Speaker 1: work inside. Yeah, it's important to like work on your
- 41:22Speaker 1: happiness and work on your mental health. I think constantly,
- 41:28Speaker 1: because then it's going to feel so much better when
- 41:30Speaker 1: you reach these goals, and then you can celebrate these
- 41:33Speaker 1: goals and then sit with them.
- 41:34Speaker 3: It's like, Okay, we got it. We gotta keep going,
- 41:36Speaker 3: we gotta keep going, We get the cycle.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Yeah, someone might hear that and also think yes, and
- 41:42Speaker 2: isn't it tiring? Like isn't it tiring to always be
- 41:45Speaker 2: working on yourself? What do you think say when you
- 41:48Speaker 2: hear that? Well, like I've heard people like people have
- 41:52Speaker 2: asked me before. They're like, you have like so many routines,
- 41:54Speaker 2: Like aren't you exhausted? Let's okay, let's pause, talk to
- 41:58Speaker 2: me about the routines, and then let's talk about exciting
- 42:01Speaker 2: at the morning routine.
- 42:01Speaker 3: Let's give the morning routine.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Okay, let me get into the morning routine. I mean,
- 42:06Speaker 1: we love a good routine. Yeah, I feel like I
- 42:08Speaker 1: need a routine because my career is so all over
- 42:12Speaker 1: the place. And what I mean by that is like
- 42:15Speaker 1: I'm on my client schedule, I never know I don't
- 42:17Speaker 1: even know what country I'm going to be in next week,
- 42:19Speaker 1: you know, like I'm getting literally this morning, I woke
- 42:22Speaker 1: up to a client texting me like, can you come
- 42:24Speaker 1: to Toronto with me in two days?
- 42:26Speaker 3: Like it's it's just all over.
- 42:28Speaker 1: So I'm like, for me to have any kind of
- 42:30Speaker 1: like stability in my life, I have to have a
- 42:33Speaker 1: strong routine. Yea, So my morning routine really starts the
- 42:38Speaker 1: night before when I get home. I mean, I only
- 42:41Speaker 1: have red lights in my house because I'm like, I
- 42:44Speaker 1: don't need like bright lights, and like some people think
- 42:46Speaker 1: that's so weird, Like my neighbors are like, are you
- 42:48Speaker 1: a witch? Like what's going on in there? Like are
- 42:51Speaker 1: you a hooker? Like what's up with the red lights?
- 42:53Speaker 1: And I'm like, no, it's for my circadium rhythms, like
- 42:56Speaker 1: for like my nerves to be calm.
- 42:59Speaker 2: I know the benefit it's a red light, but do
- 43:01Speaker 2: you want to just like glaze over them for someone
- 43:02Speaker 2: who might not?
- 43:03Speaker 3: Sure?
- 43:03Speaker 1: Okay, So red light therapy is very different than just
- 43:06Speaker 1: red lights in your house. The red lights in my
- 43:08Speaker 1: house is basically I don't want to be exposed to
- 43:10Speaker 1: blue light once the sun goes down, so I only
- 43:13Speaker 1: want to be exposed like amber or very like dim
- 43:15Speaker 1: warm or red lights. And that's just to basically help
- 43:20Speaker 1: the melatonin, you know, balance in your brain hole thing,
- 43:23Speaker 1: set your circadium rhythm so you're getting the most sleep
- 43:25Speaker 1: as possible, RESTful sleep. Red light therapy is a device
- 43:30Speaker 1: that was created by NASA and it uses infrared technology,
- 43:33Speaker 1: uses far and near infrared and basically what it does
- 43:37Speaker 1: is it goes through the dermis of your skin. It
- 43:40Speaker 1: targets all the mitochondria, which is the powerhouse of you know,
- 43:43Speaker 1: your cells, and it works to lower inflammation. It creates
- 43:47Speaker 1: something called ATP energy, which basically it's just renewing of
- 43:51Speaker 1: the cell. So it's really great to like wake your
- 43:54Speaker 1: cells up if there is inflammation, it's going to help
- 43:56Speaker 1: to lower any inflammation. Which is why it's so good
- 43:59Speaker 1: for skin. It's not made for skin now it is.
- 44:02Speaker 1: Everyone's like, you know, the craze is red light therapy, right,
- 44:05Speaker 1: I mean this has been around for so many years
- 44:08Speaker 1: and you know for people with joint pain, and I
- 44:11Speaker 1: love to bring my red light to prep people's skin.
- 44:13Speaker 3: But again, because I.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Work with athletes, I'm like, maybe you just want to
- 44:16Speaker 1: put this on your knee if you like hurt your
- 44:17Speaker 1: knee in a game or something.
- 44:19Speaker 2: The regenerative benefits exactly, so the night before. We're in
- 44:23Speaker 2: our home with red lights. Oh, red light.
- 44:26Speaker 1: If I am going to listen to music, it's like
- 44:28Speaker 1: those that's frequency music or classical music.
- 44:31Speaker 3: People are already like, who the hell is this woman?
- 44:34Speaker 1: I'm obsessed with classical music, like I like, I love
- 44:37Speaker 1: a classical moment, back.
- 44:39Speaker 3: Chopin, Mozart, like, give it to me, I love it.
- 44:42Speaker 2: I okay, not box Chopin or Mozart, but I do
- 44:46Speaker 2: listen to chill jazz in the morning.
- 44:47Speaker 3: Oka, I love that, Okay, we love it.
- 44:50Speaker 1: I just love like a vibe, like I just calm,
- 44:53Speaker 1: like make me feel like I'm at the spa. Yes, okay,
- 44:56Speaker 1: So then I like, you know, get into my whole
- 44:58Speaker 1: skin carrotin, which is my ritual. Like skincare for me
- 45:01Speaker 1: is a ritual like taking my lashes off, my makeup off.
- 45:05Speaker 1: I love polished choice, I love squalen oil. I love
- 45:09Speaker 1: using my micro current and just going through like the
- 45:12Speaker 1: taking my time with my shower, my skincare, the whole thing.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Like it's just a ritual that I'm obsessed with.
- 45:20Speaker 1: I take my magnesium, I take my nighttime supplements, and
- 45:24Speaker 1: then I really try to not be on my phone,
- 45:28Speaker 1: like an hour before my phone goes on. Do not
- 45:30Speaker 1: to serve at seven pm. Sometimes I'm working till ten pm.
- 45:33Speaker 1: So every day is different. I try so hard to
- 45:36Speaker 1: like really get to bed at the same time if
- 45:38Speaker 1: I can. But yeah, so I try not to be
- 45:41Speaker 1: on any device for at least an hour before I
- 45:44Speaker 1: go to sleep. You and I have that in common,
- 45:46Speaker 1: and it's hard to do. Yeah, Like it is hard
- 45:48Speaker 1: to do, especially I feel like we're humans. We're all
- 45:50Speaker 1: so addicted to our phones. Like I really wish. I
- 45:52Speaker 1: think there's gonna be a rehab for people for their
- 45:56Speaker 1: phone addiction. Oh yeah, and I'll probably go you're probably
- 45:58Speaker 1: see be there, they're there. I also put the Wi
- 46:02Speaker 1: Fi off. Yeah, like I don't need that like near
- 46:04Speaker 1: my head. No, we don't need that.
- 46:06Speaker 3: We don't. We don't have time for that.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Then you go to bed, I do my PMF map
- 46:11Speaker 1: and I read my book okay.
- 46:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 1: And I like to read, usually a biography or something
- 46:16Speaker 1: with history at night.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Oh interesting.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Yeah, during the day, I love like a entrepreneurial book.
- 46:22Speaker 3: At night.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Give me all the history, give me all the biographies,
- 46:25Speaker 1: give me all the things.
- 46:26Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, and then you wake up.
- 46:28Speaker 1: Then I wake up, Okay, I snuggle with my cats
- 46:31Speaker 1: for a little bit. Obviously, my red light therapy machine.
- 46:34Speaker 1: It's right next to my bed. I'm putting it right
- 46:36Speaker 1: on my face. Wakes me right up right. Sitting there
- 46:38Speaker 1: for ten minutes, I'll do a little like you know, prayer,
- 46:41Speaker 1: meditation or affirmations, pet the girls, my cats, and then
- 46:45Speaker 1: I go tongue scrape. I go drink my water. I
- 46:48Speaker 1: put my electrolytes in it. I love the SymbioticA molecular hydrogen.
- 46:53Speaker 1: You just drop it right in. It's like super hydrating.
- 46:55Speaker 1: I feel like everyone needs to be drinking that. Do
- 46:58Speaker 1: my skincare, go to plot my plates. They have like
- 47:01Speaker 1: classes at five am, which is great. So if I
- 47:03Speaker 1: need to be in the city early, I try to
- 47:04Speaker 1: like get in if I have time to go for
- 47:07Speaker 1: a walk, I'll go for a walk just like natural
- 47:09Speaker 1: light hydration movements to start the day, and then I
- 47:13Speaker 1: feel like I can.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Get to it, get to it. So no routine is
- 47:16Speaker 2: what I'm hearing, Like, you have nothing? Yeah, yeah, nothing nothing.
- 47:20Speaker 2: I'm sure there's so many things that I'm skipping to. Well,
- 47:23Speaker 2: long did it take for you to get to a
- 47:26Speaker 2: place where you really felt like you dialed in on
- 47:31Speaker 2: the components of your routine as they stand.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Right now, not that long like I feel like, I
- 47:37Speaker 1: mean really, it was during the pandemic when I was home,
- 47:40Speaker 1: and then when I started doing my rituals and routines,
- 47:43Speaker 1: I was like, Wow, I feel really good. I'm going
- 47:46Speaker 1: to continue with this. And as I got busy, like
- 47:49Speaker 1: I just continued to be really diligent.
- 47:53Speaker 2: As you got busy, meaning that you're also no longer
- 47:56Speaker 2: always within your home to take these routines with you. Yeah, okay, yeah, absolutely, Yeah,
- 48:02Speaker 2: And that's a non negotiable for you, depend it has
- 48:05Speaker 2: to be otherwise I'm exhausted.
- 48:07Speaker 1: Yeah, And I'm like, I don't want to get inflamed
- 48:09Speaker 1: or I don't want the end of nutrious is to
- 48:10Speaker 1: come back, and I don't. I want to make sure
- 48:13Speaker 1: that I'm feeling my best also so I can show
- 48:15Speaker 1: up my best self for my clients.
- 48:18Speaker 2: Yeah, it's such a beautiful pov. Okay, I have a
- 48:20Speaker 2: bunch of questions that I want to get into. We're
- 48:22Speaker 2: going to go into rapid fire for ten minutes now
- 48:24Speaker 2: before I let you go today. The first question, what
- 48:27Speaker 2: should we know about makeup while exercising?
- 48:30Speaker 1: I don't love a lot of makeup while exercising. And
- 48:32Speaker 1: why is that because it can just clog your I
- 48:35Speaker 1: mean it can clog your pores. Like I don't love
- 48:37Speaker 1: wearing foundation at all during a workout.
- 48:40Speaker 3: It's just clogging.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Yeah, if you want to do like a little miscare,
- 48:43Speaker 1: maybe a little brow fine, okay, but I think maybe
- 48:46Speaker 1: just skip it.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Three must haves for an easy everyday makeup routine. Okay,
- 48:50Speaker 2: a little bit of concealer right in the inner corners
- 48:52Speaker 2: of your eyes. Don't need to like bring it out
- 48:55Speaker 2: where your crows feed are. That's where you start to
- 48:56Speaker 2: see the lines. Just a little bit darkness likes to
- 48:58Speaker 2: hide in the inner corner of the eye. So I
- 49:00Speaker 2: think just a little bit of concealer.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Blush.
- 49:02Speaker 1: I love like a liquid blush, just a little swipe
- 49:06Speaker 1: on the cheeks, just to give you a little glow.
- 49:08Speaker 1: And I love brows, like even if it's a clear
- 49:11Speaker 1: gel brow, just to like lift it up and just
- 49:14Speaker 1: lift the face.
- 49:15Speaker 3: And maybe a little eyelash. Girl, and I think we're
- 49:17Speaker 3: good to go.
- 49:18Speaker 2: You're segueing me into the question love a brow product
- 49:21Speaker 2: that makes it look like a laminated look? Do you
- 49:24Speaker 2: have any recommendations, and even better if they are sweatproof.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Oh. You know, it's funny. I always use a bar
- 49:29Speaker 3: of soap. Oh, a bar of soap, tell us more.
- 49:32Speaker 1: Yeah, just like a regular bar of soap with a
- 49:35Speaker 1: little blank, spoolly wet it and just brush your brows
- 49:39Speaker 1: up and they stay all day.
- 49:40Speaker 3: Wow. That's a hot tip.
- 49:42Speaker 2: That's a hot tip. Bags under my eyes help? Okay,
- 49:46Speaker 2: bags on your eyes? I could be from a lot
- 49:47Speaker 2: of things. First you want to see like are you hydrated?
- 49:50Speaker 3: Wait? I love this.
- 49:51Speaker 2: I love that we're going to the root cause before
- 49:52Speaker 2: you're like, and this is my favorite concealer totally yeah,
- 49:55Speaker 2: because I'm all about like getting to the root cause first.
- 49:57Speaker 3: Okay.
- 49:57Speaker 1: That's why I'm so big on skincare, and that's also
- 50:00Speaker 1: why I have a lot of male clients too, because
- 50:02Speaker 1: I'm like, let's focus on like the skin first and
- 50:04Speaker 1: like the root cause of things, and then the makeup
- 50:07Speaker 1: is gonna look fabulous. But you know, are you do
- 50:09Speaker 1: you have contacts in too long? Maybe you're are you
- 50:11Speaker 1: sleeping in your contacts? Are your eyes irritated from something?
- 50:14Speaker 1: Maybe you're looking at your phone too much? Maybe you
- 50:16Speaker 1: should get the blue blocking glasses. There could be a
- 50:19Speaker 1: lot of reasons for under ice circles or darkness. But
- 50:23Speaker 1: with that being said, making sure you're sleeping, making sure
- 50:25Speaker 1: you're drinking enough water, getting your minerals, doing all the things,
- 50:28Speaker 1: little cane. Before I get into the makeup ice rolling.
- 50:32Speaker 1: Love a good ice roller. I love a good ice
- 50:34Speaker 1: I have the skinny Confidential one. But I also I
- 50:37Speaker 1: was traveling in London. I didn't have my ice rollers,
- 50:39Speaker 1: so I just used cold spoons. Yeah, yeah, so I
- 50:42Speaker 1: mean you can get real creative with it. You just
- 50:44Speaker 1: use an ice cube if you want. Gotcha doesn't need
- 50:46Speaker 1: to be fancy. But and then of course just a
- 50:48Speaker 1: little concealer right now, really into the Lawless brand. Oh
- 50:53Speaker 1: I've never heard Yeah Lawless Anni Lawless, she has a
- 50:56Speaker 1: fabulous makeup brand.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Okay, speaking of brands of you at you recommend a hydrating,
- 51:02Speaker 2: clean beauty lip color.
- 51:04Speaker 3: Where we're going, I.
- 51:05Speaker 1: Think, say beauty and Lawless I think is a clean
- 51:08Speaker 1: brand too, But say beauty.
- 51:10Speaker 2: I love for someone who doesn't know what clean beauty is. Yeah,
- 51:13Speaker 2: can you expand?
- 51:14Speaker 3: Yeah? They just they leave out a lot of nasty ingredients.
- 51:18Speaker 1: I mean, makeup isn't the cleanest thing we as women
- 51:22Speaker 1: and men somehow are.
- 51:23Speaker 3: As people like to wear makeup.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not the most cleanest thing, and a lot
- 51:30Speaker 1: of them have different silicones and violate plates or you know,
- 51:34Speaker 1: all these toxic things in them. But now a lot
- 51:37Speaker 1: of brands are aware of this and they're starting to
- 51:40Speaker 1: clean up the ingredient list, So there's definitely cleaner alternatives now.
- 51:45Speaker 3: Tip to help make lipstick last on a run. Oh
- 51:50Speaker 3: on a run. Oh we want we want to lip
- 51:52Speaker 3: that stay baby.
- 51:53Speaker 1: You want to make sure that your lips are dry
- 51:55Speaker 1: before you put on your lipstick.
- 51:58Speaker 3: Then it's going to stay.
- 51:58Speaker 1: If you put a lip liner on, it's going to
- 52:00Speaker 1: stay all day if your lips are dry. I personally
- 52:03Speaker 1: don't like my lips dry ever. Yeah, so I'm constantly
- 52:06Speaker 1: reapplying you.
- 52:06Speaker 2: And my best friend she literally cannot move around anywhere
- 52:09Speaker 2: without at least one chapstick on her.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:11Speaker 3: I'm the same way.
- 52:12Speaker 2: Yep, best everyday tinted SPF tinted SPF. I love it Cosmetics.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Their c C cream A little bit goes a long way.
- 52:22Speaker 2: CEC stands for color correcting.
- 52:24Speaker 1: They do have an SPF fifty in it, and I
- 52:27Speaker 1: absolutely love It's like one of my go to and
- 52:29Speaker 1: I use it on a lot of my athlete clients.
- 52:31Speaker 2: Last question here, favorite primer and favorite setting spray.
- 52:35Speaker 1: I don't love primer. Oh tell us why. I just
- 52:38Speaker 1: think it makes the skin look dry, So you'll just
- 52:40Speaker 1: do a moisturizer. I do moisturizer, a really lightweight moisturizer.
- 52:44Speaker 1: Also depends on the skin type. People have different types
- 52:47Speaker 1: of skin, so depending on our consult before the makeup application,
- 52:51Speaker 1: I'll use different things. But I very rarely will use
- 52:55Speaker 1: a primer setting spray. I use religiously. I love the
- 53:00Speaker 1: one size, and I like the cosmetics so much.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Good stuff. Yeah.
- 53:05Speaker 2: I could go through questions with you forever, but before
- 53:08Speaker 2: I let you go today, two more. First question is
- 53:11Speaker 2: my girl. So many people come to your Instagram page
- 53:14Speaker 2: now and they see a woman that's working with some
- 53:16Speaker 2: of their favorite athletes and celebrities. But when you look
- 53:18Speaker 2: in the mirror, what is it that you see looking
- 53:20Speaker 2: back at you? Oh that's a great question.
- 53:23Speaker 3: What do I see? I struggled with this. Everything was
- 53:27Speaker 3: like during the pandemic.
- 53:28Speaker 1: Yeah, because I related like I always looked at myself
- 53:31Speaker 1: as Alex the makeup artist, and then when all that
- 53:34Speaker 1: was taken away during the pandemic, I was like, oh, wow,
- 53:38Speaker 1: who am I? But I'm also like, okay, I'm also
- 53:41Speaker 1: a sister, I'm also a daughter. I'm also an artist,
- 53:45Speaker 1: not just makeup artist, like I love art. I also
- 53:50Speaker 1: am like I just started to realize more things about myself.
- 53:54Speaker 1: So when I look at myself, I also I'm like
- 53:57Speaker 1: cheering myself on if that makes sense.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Yeah, you know. So you see someone that you're proud of, Yeah,
- 54:03Speaker 3: that's so special. I'm like, wow, look at me. Go
- 54:06Speaker 3: You've got this. You've got this girl.
- 54:09Speaker 2: Right now, you have an opportunity to offer yourself a
- 54:11Speaker 2: piece of advice looking back on shortly after you lost
- 54:15Speaker 2: your dad, You're in a place where you have to
- 54:19Speaker 2: grow up, as you said, quite quick, and there are
- 54:22Speaker 2: a lot of hurdles that go hand in hand with that.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Knowing what you know, now, what would you tell yourself
- 54:28Speaker 2: going through that hurdle moment?
- 54:30Speaker 1: It's all going to be okay, Everything is figure outable.
- 54:34Speaker 1: There is always light at the end of the tunnel.
- 54:36Speaker 3: There's always light.
- 54:37Speaker 1: There is always light at the end of the tunnel,
- 54:38Speaker 1: no matter how dark, how lonely, how sad, how heartbreaking.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Something can feel. It's always going to get better. It's
- 54:46Speaker 2: always going to get better, get better. I'm so happy
- 54:48Speaker 2: that you were able to come in today. Oh my goodness,
