- 17:22Speaker 4: Step of the pool by his belt, just like that
- 17:25Speaker 4: scarecrow guy last summer, ugly stab wounds in his chest
- 17:28Speaker 4: and brushed the.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Snow off around his head.
- 17:29Speaker 4: Sergeant hurry, it's the same guy. A man who was

- 17:35Speaker 2: The scarecrow man.
- 17:49Speaker 4: I isn't really back. He freeze as hard as this
- 17:52Speaker 4: corpse in the front yard did. Again nold identification marks
- 17:56Speaker 4: gone rated.
- 17:57Speaker 2: How long do you figure he's been dead? All right?
- 17:59Speaker 2: Say late last night?
- 18:01Speaker 4: Yes, about the time the snow stopped. We slept through
- 18:04Speaker 4: the whole thing, Pete, rushing from No, Well, what'd you
- 18:09Speaker 4: find out? Where's the single set of tracks leading up
- 18:12Speaker 4: to the snowman.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Come from the Mayfield barn, Inspector, blood in there and
- 18:17Speaker 5: signs of a fight.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Murdered in the barn. Huh?
- 18:19Speaker 4: And the killer carried the dead man to this spot,
- 18:21Speaker 4: knocked down Josh Bull and snowman slung the corpse of
- 18:24Speaker 4: the pool with his own belt and rebuilt a snowman
- 18:26Speaker 4: around it.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Why do you suppose he did that? Now, my straw did.
- 18:29Speaker 4: The lay discovery of the crime, Sergeant, the killer was
- 18:32Speaker 4: afraid of us. By the time the snow melled, we'd
- 18:35Speaker 4: long scent of left the neighborhood work too. The dead
- 18:38Speaker 4: man's bed had and so through the snow, Pete, was
- 18:40Speaker 4: there any cool in the barn to the killer?
- 18:42Speaker 2: I locked my eyes out, Inspector, No dice.
- 18:45Speaker 4: And these tracks don't tell us anything. Killer wore huge
- 18:48Speaker 4: gloshes could have been anyone's. Aren't there any other tracks
- 18:50Speaker 4: really to show where the killer came from which way
- 18:52Speaker 4: he went?
- 18:53Speaker 2: Narrow a track? Anywhere's on the Mayfield property.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Dad, That means the victim came to the barn during
- 18:59Speaker 4: the snowstorm, as did his murderer. Then more snow fell
- 19:02Speaker 4: and wiped out all the tracks they'd made, so for
- 19:04Speaker 4: the time the killer loved his victim's body from the
- 19:06Speaker 4: bond to the French yad here? Or he left was
- 19:08Speaker 4: this one set at trank?
- 19:09Speaker 5: My wife? And where are the killer's tracks escaping from
- 19:13Speaker 5: the yard here after he put the body in the snowman?
- 19:15Speaker 2: All right, no escaping track, I didn't you've hit it.
- 19:18Speaker 5: The only place the killer could have escaped to without
- 19:21Speaker 5: leaving further tracks in the snow is up onto the
- 19:24Speaker 5: porch of the Mayfield farmhouse here, So yeah, he.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Could have made it from the snowman of the porch
- 19:29Speaker 2: and one big stack.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Any That means the killer is one of the people
- 19:32Speaker 4: in this farmhouse. Yes, Dad, At last we know the
- 19:35Speaker 4: stranger was murdered by one of the Mayfield tribe, so
- 19:38Speaker 4: let's wake him up.
- 19:39Speaker 2: And find out which one.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Then we went to work on the Mayfields might just
- 19:53Speaker 4: as well have saved our breath, or claimed they didn't
- 19:56Speaker 4: know a thing about the corpse and the snowman, so
- 19:59Speaker 4: we turned home, us over to the local chaff and.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Headed for home. No night to Rememberillery.
- 20:04Speaker 4: The next few weeks heard him snapped your head off
- 20:08Speaker 4: for look, call out his reels of movie film that
- 20:11Speaker 4: he shot on her two trips.
- 20:12Speaker 2: To Darryville, and run him over and over.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Anyway, one night, we're showing you shots of the bloodstained Snowman.
- 20:19Speaker 2: When Nikki stopped the machine, Sergeant put the lights on.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Quite the excitement. Corps. Now, I know who killed that man.
- 20:31Speaker 5: You know who killed him, But Maestro, we don't even
- 20:35Speaker 5: know who he was.
- 20:36Speaker 2: You mean the victim. I've known that for some time.
- 20:39Speaker 2: He had not his name, of.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Course, But it wasn't the victim's identity which held me up.
- 20:44Speaker 4: It was his killer's identity.
- 20:46Speaker 6: And now you know that too.
- 20:47Speaker 9: But how can you, Wellery, all you've done is run
- 20:50Speaker 9: the Snowman movie there?
- 20:51Speaker 2: What told me?
- 20:52Speaker 4: Nikki? Didn't you notice a difference between the Josh bull
- 20:55Speaker 4: and snowman and the snowman the killer built around the corpse.
- 20:59Speaker 4: The snow at the base of the killer Snowman had
- 21:02Speaker 4: been shoveled up. Don't you see After concealing the body
- 21:06Speaker 4: inside the Snowman, The killer then began poking in the
- 21:09Speaker 4: snow at its feet with a shovel.
- 21:11Speaker 2: He lost something in the snow and was looking for it.
- 21:13Speaker 4: But my films even answer that there's an object in
- 21:17Speaker 4: the shots of the original snowman that's missing from the
- 21:19Speaker 4: shots of the made over Snowman. Something messing what my
- 21:22Speaker 4: shot Josh Bullen's corn cob pipe?
- 21:26Speaker 2: Hey, that's right.
- 21:27Speaker 4: When we found the made over snowman with a corpse inside,
- 21:30Speaker 4: the pipe, wasn't there exactly? The killer dropped the pipe
- 21:34Speaker 4: accidentally and shoveled frantically around trying to find it. He
- 21:38Speaker 4: never did find it, otherwise he had stuck it back
- 21:40Speaker 4: in the snowman's mouth.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Yeah, so we'd think it was still the same snowman
- 21:44Speaker 5: and not get suspicious and find the party.
- 21:46Speaker 9: That's all very well, missy queen, But what's the missing
- 21:48Speaker 9: corn cob got to do with the killer of the stranger?
- 21:51Speaker 4: The missing corn cob Nikki tells me who the killer was. Well,
- 22:08Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, there you have the mystery of the
- 22:11Speaker 4: Scarecrow and the Snowman.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Have you puzzled it out yet?
- 22:14Speaker 4: Well, let's compare solutions with our guest, armchair detective Nikki.
- 22:19Speaker 4: Will you introduce our guests please?
- 22:21Speaker 9: Well, ellery, Our first guest tonight is Miss Gene Cagney,
- 22:24Speaker 9: the famous screen star and sister of Jimmy Cagney. Our
- 22:28Speaker 9: second guest is mister Peter Cusack, Executive Secretary of the
- 22:32Speaker 9: National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
- 22:34Speaker 4: All right, llry, thank you, Nikki. Ladies and gentlemen, I'd
- 22:39Speaker 4: like to take a moment here to remind you that
- 22:41Speaker 4: the March of Dimes to Fight Infantile Paralysis is on
- 22:45Speaker 4: right now. Won't you help protect America's children from this
- 22:48Speaker 4: dread disease by sending your dimes and dollars as much
- 22:52Speaker 4: as you can afford to President Roosevelt Washington, DC. Thank you,
- 22:57Speaker 4: And now, Miss Cagney, who is the m I'd say.
- 23:01Speaker 6: It was marm Mayfield. Have you any reason?
- 23:04Speaker 9: Well, I would suspect that Marm Mayfield wouldn't have a
- 23:07Speaker 9: second pipe on him, and also I think she'd be
- 23:10Speaker 9: strong enough to be able to commit the crime and
- 23:12Speaker 9: to reconstruct the snowman.
- 23:13Speaker 2: Thank you, Miss Keakeney, and mister Cusack. Who do you
- 23:16Speaker 2: think the murder is? I think the murder was Josh
- 23:19Speaker 2: Josh Mayfield ellery. Why do you think that.
- 23:24Speaker 10: I don't know what his motive was, but the clue
- 23:27Speaker 10: of the missing corn cob pipe makes me feel that
- 23:33Speaker 10: it was he because he referred to the fact that
- 23:35Speaker 10: that Pra Mayfield had this collection, and Prav Mayfield being
- 23:41Speaker 10: very fussy and irritable, I would think that Josh would
- 23:45Speaker 10: not want to lose the pipe.
- 23:46Speaker 6: You mean Josh Bullen, the husband of Jose Mayfield.
- 23:49Speaker 5: Excuse me, thank you, mister Cusack and miss Keckney.
- 23:54Speaker 4: We'll let you know in just a moment whether you've
- 23:56Speaker 4: hit the solution to our mystery. But first, here's Ernest Chapel,
- 24:00Speaker 4: who can't seem to get his mind off sabotage.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Find it is sabotaged when a common sake headache makes
- 24:06Speaker 3: you lose out on work or pleasure. You can't do
- 24:09Speaker 3: a first class job or enjoy your fun when you've
- 24:11Speaker 3: got pounding head pains, plus the upset stomach and jittery
- 24:15Speaker 3: nerves that may accompany a common sick headache. And that's
- 24:18Speaker 3: why I say, the next time you're feeling miserable with
- 24:20Speaker 3: a headache, step up to the nearest drug store. Fountain,
- 24:23Speaker 3: an ask or a bromo seltzer. A ten cents is
- 24:26Speaker 3: all it costs to try bromo seltzer, and once you
- 24:29Speaker 3: experience the quick effective relief it gives, you'll want to
- 24:33Speaker 3: get a bottle for your home medicine.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Chest Harry, you said you know who that dead stranger was?
- 24:45Speaker 4: Well, Dad, remember your mentioning that we got a letter
- 24:47Speaker 4: from the Derryville Justice the piece them under the road
- 24:51Speaker 4: chain that he knew who this stranger was. Yes, Now
- 24:53Speaker 4: what could a justice of the peace and a town
- 24:55Speaker 4: clerk know that other members of a rural community might
- 24:58Speaker 4: not know. Well, what do we usually associate with justices
- 25:02Speaker 4: of the peace?
- 25:03Speaker 6: Marriages he perform?
- 25:04Speaker 4: Yes, and marriages also involve a town clerk who probably
- 25:08Speaker 4: issues a license and certainly records the marriage in the
- 25:11Speaker 4: town role.
- 25:12Speaker 2: So you think of the stranger had been married in
- 25:13Speaker 2: darry years before, right?
- 25:15Speaker 4: But who else would know of the stranger's marriage? Only
- 25:19Speaker 4: the Mayfield because the killer is one of them. So
- 25:22Speaker 4: we must ask what woman at the Mayfield farm was
- 25:25Speaker 4: of marriageable age?
- 25:26Speaker 2: Only one Josie.
- 25:28Speaker 6: The daughter Jodie is married to Josh Bullen.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Conclusion, Josie and the stranger had been married before Josie's
- 25:34Speaker 4: marriage to Josh Bullen, a secret marriage, because no one
- 25:37Speaker 4: on Durieville was able to recognize the stranger from that
- 25:40Speaker 4: photo I took of him at the hospital last summer,
- 25:43Speaker 4: so it was reasonable to conclude that one of the
- 25:45Speaker 4: Mayfield tribe had killed a stranger to keep his secret
- 25:48Speaker 4: marriage to Josie from becoming public knowledge. Jose and this
- 25:51Speaker 4: stranger low presenting oh Man Mayfield finds out and either
- 25:55Speaker 4: drives a man away or buys him off. There's been
- 25:58Speaker 4: something pretty raw about the man that the Mayfield could stomach.
- 26:00Speaker 5: So when they thought Josie's husband that never turn up again,
- 26:03Speaker 5: Josie never bothered to gather divorce.
- 26:06Speaker 6: And when Josie married Josh Bullen, she committed nickomy.
- 26:09Speaker 4: Yes, well, the husband did turn up again last July,
- 26:13Speaker 4: probably with the bands for more money which the Mayfields
- 26:16Speaker 4: couldn't or wouldn't meet. So one of the families stabbed
- 26:19Speaker 4: him early that Sunday morning and hid the body in
- 26:21Speaker 4: the Cornfield scarecrow till it could be disposed of permanently
- 26:24Speaker 4: at nightfall. But we came along during the day, found
- 26:27Speaker 4: the stranger still alive, took him to the hospital and
- 26:30Speaker 4: he escaped the one who knew Josie's Bigaman secret was
- 26:33Speaker 4: loose again?
- 26:34Speaker 5: When why did he come back in January? But we'll
- 26:37Speaker 5: never know exactly, Sergeant.
- 26:39Speaker 4: Anyway, the same Mayfield murdered him for keeps this time
- 26:42Speaker 4: and hid the body in the snowman so that we'd
- 26:44Speaker 4: fail to discover the crime and lead. But who is
- 26:46Speaker 4: the kila Shanon?
- 26:47Speaker 2: How do you know the missing corn cob? Pipe tells me, Dad.
- 26:51Speaker 4: We know the killer wanted a corn cob, hadn't located
- 26:54Speaker 4: the one he'd lost in the deep snow, because if
- 26:56Speaker 4: he had found it, he'd have stuck it back in
- 26:58Speaker 4: the snowman's mouth, and he'd That fact clears Josh Bullen
- 27:02Speaker 4: and old Pa Mayfield.
- 27:03Speaker 2: Theresbourne has father and DAWs.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Howshosn because either man could easily have got another corn
- 27:09Speaker 4: cob to stick into the snowman's mouth.
- 27:11Speaker 6: There, How do you figure that out?
- 27:12Speaker 2: Him?
- 27:12Speaker 4: Well, we know that Josh Bullen had a second corn
- 27:16Speaker 4: cob up in his bedroom, and we also know that
- 27:18Speaker 4: Pam Mayfield kept his corn cobs in his attic room.
- 27:22Speaker 2: Either man could have procured a corn.
- 27:24Speaker 4: Cob to replace the lost one merely by stealing up
- 27:27Speaker 4: to his own room in the middle of the night
- 27:28Speaker 4: while the.
- 27:28Speaker 2: Rest of us were asleep.
- 27:30Speaker 4: Since the killer didn't replace the lost pipe, it means
- 27:33Speaker 4: he didn't have one to replace it with and couldn't
- 27:35Speaker 4: get another from his own room.
- 27:36Speaker 2: But marstrawvac leaves only the two precisely.
- 27:41Speaker 4: Could the murder have been Josie, Josh's wife, No, it
- 27:44Speaker 4: was a man sized job to carry the dead body
- 27:46Speaker 4: from the barn to the front yard, demolish the original snowman,
- 27:50Speaker 4: tie the corpse to the pool, and build a new
- 27:52Speaker 4: snowman around it. Josie is an invalid, bed ridden most
- 27:56Speaker 4: of the time, so Josie couldn't possibly have done it
- 27:59Speaker 4: all righty, yes, Sergeant Ma Mayfield. Did Ma Mayfield have
- 28:03Speaker 4: the strength to commit both these strenuous crimes?
- 28:06Speaker 2: Oh?
- 28:06Speaker 4: Yes, Josh told us she even helped with the farming.
- 28:10Speaker 4: In fact, Josh said she was as strong as a
- 28:13Speaker 4: plow mayre. Yes, Mama Mayfield killed her daughter's husband to
- 28:18Speaker 4: protect Josie's reputation in that rural community and save what
- 28:22Speaker 4: was left of the poor girl's life. And there, ladies
- 28:36Speaker 4: and gentlemen, you have the solution to the mystery. I
- 28:39Speaker 4: want to thank Miss Cagney and mister Cusack for appearing
- 28:42Speaker 4: as guest armchair at Tectives this evening. We want especially
- 28:45Speaker 4: to compliment Miss Cagney on her skill in solving the crime.

- 32:05Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, an interesting story, not only for the case,
- 32:09Speaker 1: which is one of the creeper your ones I think
- 32:12Speaker 1: we've done on the show, but also for the way
- 32:17Speaker 1: that it's told. With this over this length of time,
- 32:21Speaker 1: because this is a mystery that takes place over the
- 32:24Speaker 1: course of several months, whereas a typical ellery Queen story
- 32:30Speaker 1: takes place generally in a day or two. And good
- 32:35Speaker 1: job to Jine cagnyon solving it. She had a good
- 32:40Speaker 1: method too. It seems like she focused on a couple
- 32:44Speaker 1: really important clues when there's so much going on in
- 32:48Speaker 1: the case. A lot of it was just red herrings
- 32:51Speaker 1: and window dressing, with the solution of who done it
- 32:54Speaker 1: coming down to the corn cob pop and the snowman,
- 33:00Speaker 1: the reason for the killing or the identity of the victim.
- 33:04Speaker 1: That one was a little bit harder. Still a very
- 33:07Speaker 1: fascinating case. I hope you had enjoyed it, and we
- 33:10Speaker 1: will be back next week with another adventure of Ellery Queen.
