- 0:04>> Dr. Terry Simpson: You've probably heard about the Blue zones,
- 0:06those idyllic places where people supposedly
- 0:09live to a hundred without breaking a
- 0:11sweat, eat some beans, walk a
- 0:14little, take a nap, connect with your neighbors, drink
- 0:17some red wine and boom, near
- 0:20immortality. But today we're going to
- 0:23take an unfiltered look. Because while the
- 0:25blue zones make for a beautiful story, the
- 0:28truth, it's a little more complicated.
- 0:34I am your Chief Medical Explanationist, Dr. Terri
- 0:37Simpson, and this is Fork U
- 0:40Fork University, where we make sense of the
- 0:42madness, bust a few myths and teach you a little bit
- 0:45about food and medicine.
- 0:51The term Blue zones was coined by journalist
- 0:53Dan Buettner. Working with demographers
- 0:56National Geographic, they identified five
- 0:59regions with high numbers of people who
- 1:02lived to be over 100. Okinawa,
- 1:05Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Nicoya, Costa
- 1:08Rica, Icara, Greece, and Loma Linda,
- 1:10California. They noticed some common
- 1:13lifestyle patterns, mostly plant based
- 1:16diets, a lot of daily movement, tight
- 1:18knit communities and low stress.
- 1:22Now don't get me wrong, these are all
- 1:25great habits, but here's the catch. It
- 1:27wasn't a scientific study. It was a set of
- 1:30observations. It wasn't randomized, it
- 1:33wasn't peer reviewed. It was a journalist
- 1:36project. Let's take Okinawa for
- 1:39example. It used to rank high in life
- 1:41expectancy. But more recent data shows that longevity
- 1:44has dropped significantly. Fast food is now
- 1:47common, obesity rates have risen, and the younger
- 1:50generations are far less healthy than the
- 1:53elders. And then let's take Sardinia,
- 1:56the longevity hotspot. This was
- 1:58combined to this small mountain region with
- 2:01genetic isolation and unique population
- 2:04dynamics. Not something the average person can
- 2:07replicate. This was not in the major city of
- 2:09Alghero. This was a tiny hilly
- 2:12region. Loma Linda is known to
- 2:14a specific religious community, the Seventh Day
- 2:17Adventist. It's the only United
- 2:20States location. Now. Seventh Day
- 2:23Adventists are vegetarian. They don't smoke,
- 2:26they don't drink, they exercise regularly. Their health
- 2:29outcomes are impressive, but not so
- 2:32representative of the general population community.
- 2:35So while the Blue zones are nice stories, they are
- 2:37not universal solutions and they're definitely
- 2:40not scientific blueprints.
- 2:43Now lately some research has started poking holes in
- 2:46Blue zone narratives and the biggest red
- 2:48flag the data. For instance,
- 2:51in Okinawa, researchers discovered errors in birth
- 2:54records. People registered as centurions without
- 2:57verifiable proof. In Icara, death
- 2:59records were incomplete or missing altogether. And
- 3:02this is a huge problem. If you're trying to draw scientific
- 3:05conclusions about longevity
- 3:08without clean verified data,
- 3:11you're just building theories on sand.
- 3:14Then there's survivorship bias.
- 3:17We're only hearing about the people who did live
- 3:20long. We're not counting on the ones who
- 3:23didn't, or those who died young from preventable
- 3:26diseases. And let's be honest, many
- 3:28of those places aren't Blue zones
- 3:31anymore. And they westernized, adding
- 3:34processed foods, more meat, more
- 3:36sugar. Their health outcomes have become worse.
- 3:40So are these locations magic
- 3:43longevity bubbles? No, they're snapshots
- 3:46in time, not timeless
- 3:49formulas. But let's
- 3:52move on from romanticism to rigorous
- 3:54science. Because we actually have hard
- 3:57data on on what helps people live longer
- 4:00and healthier. Because we actually have hard
- 4:03data on what helps people live longer
- 4:06and healthier. Or what we call
- 4:08healthspan. Now, I'm talking about large
- 4:11scale cohort studies like the
- 4:14Nurses Health Study, the Adventist Health Study and
- 4:17the EPIC Oxford Study. These studies
- 4:20followed hundreds of thousands of people over
- 4:22decades. They didn't rely on old
- 4:25census records. They used food frequency
- 4:28questionnaires, blood work, medical
- 4:30outcomes. The findings
- 4:33pretty consistent. Eat more plants,
- 4:36more fiber, fewer ultra processed foods,
- 4:39regular movement, not marathons, just
- 4:41more steps, strong social
- 4:44support, moderate caloric intake,
- 4:47and reduction of chronic inflammation through
- 4:50diet and lifestyle. So while the
- 4:53Blue zones suggest what might work,
- 4:56these studies show what actually
- 4:58does. Now
- 5:01let's compare some of the Blue Zones
- 5:03mythology with something that's actually evidence
- 5:06based. The Mediterranean diet. Unlike
- 5:09the Blue zones, the Mediterranean diet is a clearly
- 5:12defined diet. And it has been studied in
- 5:15over 13,000 peer reviewed
- 5:17publications. It emphasizes olive oil as
- 5:20a main fat, lots of vegetables, legumes,
- 5:23whole grains, moderate fish, minimal red
- 5:26meat, dairy in moderation, wine
- 5:29with occasional meals, not happy hour, and much
- 5:32less wine than you would think. And it's not just
- 5:34Blue zone shared meals and movements.
- 5:38But here's the difference. It's not based on
- 5:40folklore, it's based on data
- 5:44in the Predamed study. A randomized controlled
- 5:47trial of over 7,000 people at cardiovascular
- 5:50risk found that those who followed the Mediterranean Diet had a
- 5:5330% lower risk of major cardiovascular
- 5:56events compared with a low fat diet.
- 5:59And then there's the Spanish cohort study. This
- 6:02tracked 1.5 million
- 6:05people. Those who were more adherent to a
- 6:08Mediterranean diet. Based on the
- 6:10Mediterranean diet score, they lived longer.
- 6:13That's all cause mortality, not just heart
- 6:16disease, not cancer, everything. They had a
- 6:189% increase in longevity
- 6:21and health span. As you
- 6:24probably know if you listen to this podcast, the Mediterranean diet
- 6:27is replicable, measurable and clinically
- 6:29validated. You don't need to live in Sardinia,
- 6:32although I've been there. It's really nice.
- 6:35You just need a decent grocery store and a little consistency.
- 6:38So when it comes to proven longevity rates, the
- 6:41Mediterranean diet wins hands down over
- 6:43every other diet that's been studied.
- 6:46Now look, the blue zones give us a
- 6:49compelling narrative. But science doesn't
- 6:52care about stories. It cares about data.
- 6:55If you want to live longer, the secret isn't buried on a hillside in
- 6:58Costa Rica or hidden in an Okinawan soup
- 7:01pot. It's in the research. Eat real
- 7:04food. Move your body, sleep,
- 7:06connect stress less. And
- 7:09don't chase magic diet.
- 7:12Chase measured truth.
- 7:16All m right, that's it for today's dose of unfiltered

- 8:07Evo Terra. Have a good week, everybody.
- 8:14Hey Ivo, aren't you glad we don't have
- 8:16to go to Icara to find out the truth about this stuff?
- 8:20On the other hand, I kind of think going
- 8:23to the Mediterranean and hanging out for a while maybe just what the
- 8:26doctor ordered. Oh wait. I'm the doctor. Let's order
- 8:28it.
- 8:31>> Speaker B: No way, dude. I've read my Greek tragedies.
- 8:34I know that's where you fly too close to the sun.
