- 1:33was different, and I said that it was probably the least Dragnet like episode
- 1:38of Dragnet. Well, now we're going to take a listen to a program
- 1:44that was truly a step forward for the show. So here now is Production
- 1:49three, also known as Werewolf Ladies and Gentlemen Story you were about to hear
- 2:00is true, only the names have been changed to protect the innocent. NBC
- 2:07brings you drag Net. You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to robbery Detail.
- 2:24There's a potential killer on the loose in your city. Eighteen women have
- 2:29been beaten and robbed by this man. The newspapers call him the weird World.
- 2:35Your job is to get him. Drag Net the documented drama of an
- 2:43actual crime, investigated and solved by the men who unrelentingly stand watch on the
- 2:47security of your home, your family, and your life. For the next
- 2:53thirty minutes. In cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department, you will travel
- 2:58step by step on the side of the law through an actual case, from
- 3:01beginning to end, from crime to punishment. Drag Nett is the story of
- 3:07your police force in action. It was Thursday morning, February two, was
- 3:19reigning in Los Angeles. We were working the early morning watch out of robbery
- 3:23detail. Detectives in Los Angeles work in pairs. My partner's Ben Romero.
- 3:29He's a sergeant and saw my name's Friday. The boss is head Backstring,
- 3:34the chief of Detectives. I was on the way back from a teletype room.
- 3:37And it was three am when I got the room. Twenty seven a
- 3:40robbery detail. Hi, Ben, what's up? Keep your coat on?
- 3:44Joe just had a hot shot call going gibber right behind you. Let's go
- 3:49Freddy? Oh what was it? Ed? Another woman ve Golm was beating
- 3:53the dead. How many does that make? About eighteen and six weeks?
- 3:57Is that right, Skipper? Yeah, eighteen two minutes. Come on down
- 4:00these stairs to the grass. You know what about that suspect we had ed?
- 4:03You mean Martin? Yeah, I had to release him this morning.
- 4:06I got a good tale on him, Henderson, and we got any report
- 4:11here, nothing definite to hold him for. Here's the grass. Let's ustle
- 4:15it right. Then. If this isn't Martin's job, Skiff, and he's
- 4:17not the right man, then we start all over again. And we worked
- 4:20night and day. They'll be fine the right man. Here's the carlets guy,
- 4:26Then you drive me. How did the victims describe this guy? Yet?
- 4:32Pretty sketchy, supposed to be tall, dark, long, black.
- 4:35The last woman said he had a face like an animal, something like a
- 4:40dog or a wolf. A wolf, Yeah, she said, something like
- 4:45a world, something like a weir wolf. We almost had to be that
- 4:53judge from the way he operated. He was either an animal or a raving
- 4:56maniac. One thing we were sure of smart when it was dangerous. For
- 5:01almost two months, he fouled the streets in a stolen car in the early
- 5:05morning, usually between three and five AM, and the victims were always lone
- 5:11women, most of them waitresses, coming to work or going home. He
- 5:15dragged them into the car, robbed them, beat them until they were unconscious,
- 5:19and then throw the body out into the street. That's just what we
- 5:23found. When we pulled up to the curb near the corner of Eighth and
- 5:25Grand, one cruiser car was already there, and so was the ambulance.
- 5:30About a dozen people were standing around looking at the crumpled figure of a woman
- 5:34sprawled out on the sidewalk. Two officers were talking to the only witness,
- 5:39a thin, sallow faced newsboy. His story didn't give us much to go
- 5:42on. Like I was telling these cops or these officers, sir. I
- 5:46was walking up eight Street on my way home as usually when I see his
- 5:47blue Chevy sit then pull up down a block there a little way and Thum
- 5:51bought the Dame's body. Actually, I don't know what to think. You
- 5:56get a look at the license plade? Well, no, I didn't.
- 6:00The truth I could hardly keep from I was just playing scared. And what
- 6:02did you do after you saw him throw the body? Asked? Huh?
- 6:05I d just stopped there for a minute, and fellow in the card rode
- 6:09right on past me. Did you get a look at him? I sure
- 6:12did. Close for you when he drew first, Well, couldn't have been
- 6:15more than well eight or ten feet away. I was right over there by
- 6:19the street light, near the curb. Would you know this man if you
- 6:23saw him again? I don't know about his hiders build or his weight,
- 6:26but mister, his face I'll never forget. Why do you say that?
- 6:30So we just like the paper says about him right right here on the front
- 6:32page. Here read it. See a woman says attacker looked like werewolf.
- 6:42That's all I knews boy could tell us. The suspect drove a blue sedan.
- 6:46He had a face like a werewolf. We covered the neighborhood for clues,
- 6:49and we questioned a dozen people, but we got nowhere. We took
- 6:53the witness's name and address, and we drove down a couple of blocks to
- 6:57an all night gas station. I'm going in here and calling the office.
- 7:04I'll see if Henderson's called in on Martin, we might still have a suspect.
- 7:10All right, skipper looks as mad as a wet horn. It does
- 7:15me. Yeah. Did you get a good look at that woman's face?
- 7:18And they moved her in the ambulance? Yeah, so it does like to
- 7:23mess him up. I don't know how we're going to get him ben,
- 7:26but we better do it fast. Next time it'll probably be murdered. Here
- 7:29comes a skipper. Jam doesn't look good. What is it that just talk
- 7:36to Henderson? He telled Martin to a bar in Long Beach. Hasn't been
- 7:41out of his sight for two minutes since yesterday. Martin's clear, and we're
- 7:45right back where we started. Yeah, with one more half dead woman in
- 7:47the hospital. Well how about that? Stormy cars? Can't wait a minute?
- 7:50Wait a minute? Attack Code three ambulance dispatched Attention all units on Grand
- 7:58Avenue between Venice in Washington, a woman victim of robbery and attack Code three
- 8:03ambulance Attest three red light and starting come on Friday, Let's roll. Oh,
- 8:15we couldn't be sure but it sounded like another one. Six minutes later
- 8:18we were there, same story werewolf. For next day, the chief ordered
- 8:28the number of cruiser cars doubled in the central district. This was for the
- 8:31early morning watch, with Plaine clothesman to back them up. Then the newspapers
- 8:35played it vague. In two days the story was on the front page of
- 8:39every paper in tom Maybe that should have made the werewolf lay low, but
- 8:43it didn't, because at four o'clock that morning, while Ben and I were
- 8:46patrolling with the other cars, he got his twentieth victim. Attention all units
- 8:54Quittier between Soto and Matthews, a woman victim of two eleven an attack code
- 8:58three dispensed. Here's a report of that blue standing us here tonight. Joe
- 9:05found it out on Anahe'm telegraph road. Any lucky with it? Not one
- 9:09thing a front waking you anything else? Nothing? Well? How about the
- 9:11auto theft details, same old storage, Joe. He steals a car,
- 9:15use it once and then drops it, never leaves a thing behind. That's
- 9:18great, We're sure moving fast. How about that big guy you picked out
- 9:20of the lineups more? Oh, I checked his alibi. It's perfect.
- 9:24Now we haven't got even half a clue. Yeah, well come on,
- 9:26let's check with that. He's instructing the police woman on the plan for tonight.
- 9:30All right, I have heard the report. You understand how the suspect
- 9:33operates and what you to do. Remember, all of you, forget you
- 9:37wherever police women change the way you walk, way you carry yourselves. That's
- 9:39the part you're playing, all right, and be careful and don't take any
- 9:43chances, all right, ready, Okay, Now, just to make sure
- 9:48you look the part, we're spotting each one of you at different restaurants and
- 9:50coffee shops throughout the central district from seven o'clock tonight until daylight tomorrow. Each
- 9:54one of you is going to be await for She got that, okay,
- 9:58Ben, you want to give him the assignments? Hey, Joe, Well,
- 10:00here's where it lines up. Marge Kissel at the Top Hat Cafe ates
- 10:03on Ninth Street between Alpharad and Westley and Katie Willis George Coffee House, broke
- 10:09from Soto right rat Field and at the All Night Steakhouse and feed Or Street
- 10:13between Florida. No, the trick of using decoys to lure criminals into a
- 10:16trap wasn't exactly new, but well, it was just one of the old
- 10:20tricks that we figured might land the werewolf behind bars. At seven that night,
- 10:24Ben and I made the rounds and found each of the policewomen on her
- 10:26job as a waitress. The overall plan was simple. The girls were to
- 10:30leave the different restaurants between three and five a m. That morning and pretend
- 10:35they were walking home. We mapped different courses for each one of them to
- 10:39throw out as much bait as possible and yet not to make it look suspicious.
- 10:43Each policewoman, from the time she left the restaurant and stepped out into
- 10:46the deserted streets would be pretty much on her own. We had officers planted
- 10:52all along the way at designated intervals, but a big element of chance and
- 10:56danger was still there. All we could do was cross our fingers, hope,
- 11:01how much more time? Joe? Let me see she's doing two minutes
- 11:05and wait and gets on your nerves that it won't be long in its corner
- 11:11doorways, pretty good lookout, but yeah, wait a minute, listen,
- 11:16who is it? Joe? Can you say? Get back? What is
- 11:18it? Wait a minute, it's Marge, kiss him. There's a man
- 11:22following her. A big guy. If it's the where's his car? I
- 11:26don't know, Maybe he changed his plans to get back here they come.
- 11:33You look at him, Joe, Oh, pretty good, not too suspicious.
- 11:37Might be coincidence, and I got a pretty good lead. Come on,
- 11:39let's go. Stay back in the shadows, Joe. So where did
- 11:45guy go through? I lost a little coffee shop up on the next Cortancye.
- 11:48Take a look. Oh yeah, yeah, he's opening the door.
- 11:52He's turning on the light and looks like a false alarms, you know,
- 11:56but let's check him anyway. Well, I didn't think we'd beat that lucky
- 12:05on the first try, and we weren't. We asked the man a few
- 12:09questions and it didn't take him long as show as he wasn't our man,
- 12:11he owned the coffee shop. So Ben and I went back and took up
- 12:16our posts again and waited for the next decoy. We covered that ten block
- 12:22course six times that morning, back and forth following the bait, but it
- 12:26was almost as if the guy could sense a trap. Not once did we
- 12:30get a nibble. By the time our last decoy finished the route, it
- 12:33was almost daylight. Joe, I never was so glad to see that sun
- 12:35come up my whole life. My feet feel like they're puffing right up out
- 12:39of my shoe. Yeah, me too. Come on, let's get over
- 12:43to the car and check on the other squad out in boiled Heights. Hit
- 12:48the radio, would you been? Yeah, Joe, there must be some
- 12:52easier job on the force and there. Yeah, you and me both.
- 12:56Let's see what happened to the others. Huh eighty Katie, one O four
- 13:00K, come in, one oh four K A unit eighty K, Go
- 13:03ahead, one O four K. This is Friday. You do any good
- 13:07out there? This is Miller. I'll call Curtis. Stand by eighty K
- 13:11to one O four K, Roger, what do you thanks, Joe?
- 13:13Maybe you buy I don't know. This guy seems to work like a mind
- 13:16reader. Well he can't win all of them. One oh four K.
- 13:18The unit eighty K is Curtis. Go ahead, this is Friday, Al,
- 13:22how'd you do out there? Any luck? Just checked in the last
- 13:24Gal, Joe, Adie, welch not to say? Okay, Al,
- 13:28have them in check in eighty K clear kgpl Okay, let's go. Then,
- 13:37when we finally got back to the office, that morning. Both Ben
- 13:41and I were ready for some sleep, but it didn't look like we were
- 13:43going to get it. We're just about finished going through the overnight reports for
- 13:46some kind of a lead when the phone rang Robbery Friday. All right,
- 13:50Joe the Auto That Hi, Wilkie. You got something for us? Not
- 13:54much as Joe, but it might work into something. He's got a report
- 13:58in on a pair of stolen license plate. So yeah, I'm not much
- 14:01of a hawk show, but I figured there's just a chance it might be
- 14:05your werewolf for it, I'll come. I don't know, maybe just a
- 14:07hunch. After thirteen years in this business, you get to know thieves pretty
- 14:11well. Sometimes you got to even think like them. Okay, Wilkie.
- 14:15Thanks, we'll check by in a couple of minutes, Right, Joe,
- 14:18what do you have to say? Pair of license plates stolen last night?
- 14:22Wilkie's got a hunch you could have been our man. That might be an
- 14:24angle, Joe. In fact, we're wilf guy to hang on to one
- 14:26car along enough, we'd have a chance. Ad he's too smart for that.
- 14:31I don't know, Joe. Sooner or later he's going to make a
- 14:33mistake. Yeah, come on, let's check with Wilkie. Well, we
- 14:39checked with Wilkerson. We got the best piece of news we'd had in days.
- 14:43On the average, ninety five percent of stolen cars are recovered or located
- 14:46within twenty four hours. In the remaining five percent, Wilkerson, by a
- 14:50simple process of elimination, narrowed down the number of cars the suspect might be
- 14:54driving. Wilkie figured six cars. Yeah they are now. I'll bet you
- 14:58if you picked up your man tonight, he'd be in one of these cars.
- 15:01Let me see, huh, two door of black sedan, you look
- 15:03convertible, another sedan, green blue coop, black coop and a great convertible
- 15:07plus could work, will he? At least we've got something to look for
- 15:11now. Yeah, you're right, Joe. Well you've got the numbers of
- 15:13those stolen plates you're talking about right here, Ben, They're already on the
- 15:16hot sheet. Yeah. Keep us posting, know, yea as usual,
- 15:20Ben, see your lady Wilcome. That's a good break, Ben, something
- 15:26can keep us busy tonight tonight. What do you mean we're setting another trap?
- 15:30Same thing as last night, same police women, same everything. Yeah,
- 15:33only this time, that's hope. He stepped into it. You know,
- 15:37Joe, this werewolf character is getting me mad. That night we followed
- 15:46in our own footsteps. We planted the police women decoys in three separate districts,
- 15:50and a few minutes before three am, our squad of men took up
- 15:52their positions. The same police women went to their waitress jobs in the same
- 15:56restaurants, and Ben and I and the rest of the men stood in doorways
- 16:00or empty filling stations and whatever cover we could find, and we waited and
- 16:04waited. What time is it, Joe? Let me look half passed four?
- 16:15Thank you? Any sign, Joe, No, nothing yet, Come
- 16:21on, stay in the shadows. That's the way it went all through the
- 16:26early morning, the same plan, over and over again until daylight. Ben
- 16:30and I had check in at the station, go over the late stolen car
- 16:33reports with Wilkie, catch a few hours sleep at home, and then come
- 16:37back and do it all over again the next night, and the next morning,
- 16:41the night after that, in the morning after that, five days later,
- 16:45Ben and I were ready to call it quits. I'll admit it,
- 16:48Joe, I can't figure guys either, Sachy Cross. He can smell a
- 16:51coup a mile away. You know, well, at least we got that
- 16:53stolen car angle left. You check with Wilkie at this morning. I'll give
- 16:56him a call. All T. Wilkerson, this is Ben Wilke. You
- 17:07got anything for us this morning? Yeah, I'm just gonna call you.
- 17:10You fellows, want to let me solve your cases for you? Why what'd
- 17:12you get? The boys picked up three of those six stolen cars since late
- 17:17yesterday? Right now? What does that leave us with? I hear the
- 17:19three still missing? Yeah? Four x Rays seven six three yeah, five
- 17:25six Young three four two uh six one Robert three eight five Yeah, got
- 17:30those? Yeah, thank you, welcome, check you later. Good news.
- 17:34Remember those six missing cars, yeah, Wilke says, the boys found
- 17:37three of them since late yesterday. Here's what's still out the blue coupe,
- 17:41the yellow convertible, and the great converted. Yeah. All this feels like
- 17:45the right track for a change. Ben. Lady got a minute, John,
- 17:48Thanksgaer, come on, Joe, what he got ed? Well?
- 17:52Nothing? Hollywood just called in with this, She said. She walked down
- 17:56to the corner from her house last night to mail the letter. On the
- 17:59way back, a guyed up in the car and tried to drag her inside
- 18:00any description, big, heavy set, dark, same thing. Well,
- 18:03how'd you get away from him, skipper? She said. She started running
- 18:07as soon as he made a motion towards her, and he saw her run
- 18:10up the steps of her house. He jumped back in the car and took
- 18:11off. How come she didn't call in before then? She hasn't got a
- 18:15phone ready to leave the house again? This morning? Sounds good? She
- 18:18if you got her address there? Yeah? Yeah, missus Tom Burdick one
- 18:22two three seven Wilcocks Apartment ten. Come on, Ben, this might be
- 18:26what we're looking for. Who is it, Sergeant Friday, ma'am police?
- 18:40Oh that's the moment. I'm Sergeant Romero, Ms Birdie. He's my partner,
- 18:48Sergeant Friday. We come out to check on your call about that little
- 18:52trouble last night. Oh well, I don't know if I'm going to be
- 18:55much help to you. I was so frightened about all I could do was
- 18:57just run. Well, because you had any to the man's description, Miss
- 19:00Bertick, I mean other than what you told the chief on the phone.
- 19:03Well, now, honestly, I don't think I can. All I saw
- 19:07was this tall, dark man jumping out of his car and starting for me.
- 19:11He had a heavy build and seemed to me well a large head,
- 19:15lots of long black hair. Mss Berdick. Would you recognize this man if
- 19:22you ever saw him again? Well, I think I might. He was
- 19:26such an unusually big man, almost frightened me to death. Well, just
- 19:30one more question, Miss Bertie. Could you describe the car this man was
- 19:33driving when he approached you? His car? Why? Yes, it was
- 19:38a gray convertible. Ms. Berdie, Are you sure of that, Yes,
- 19:42I'm sure of it. A great convertible. Thank you, Miss Bertie.
- 19:47That's all we wanted to know. Sometimes when you're on a case,
- 19:52you can chase yourself around in circles for weeks, trying to fit together just
- 19:55two little pieces of a yard long jigsaw puzzle, and a lot of that's
- 20:00time you find the answer were you at least expected. But once you get
- 20:03that feeling you're after the right man in the right way, there's nothing that
- 20:06can shake you. When Ben and I got back to headquarters, we went
- 20:11straight to the chief's office with the story, and we had him stake out
- 20:12the great invertible. In other words, if any detective or officer spotted the
- 20:17car, he reported it back to us, but he stayed away from it.
- 20:19We figured that there probably weren't more than two of the victims who could
- 20:22take the witness stand and identify the man who robbed and beat them, not
- 20:26with a smart defense lawyer anyway, So there was only one way to catch
- 20:30this suspect red handed. Here they are, Joe, both sets the largest
- 20:38numbers for that great convertible. Here the original, Here the numbers on the
- 20:42stolen play good. Everybody got a hot sheet from the chief all the way
- 20:47down to the gin. Fine. Now let's get together with the hot Joe,
- 20:51bravit, I got it. On the corner of California and Wood,
- 20:53a woman badly beacon on the corner of California and oak Wood. A woman
- 20:59Babby. Come on, Ben another one, But Joe, it's broad Dayla.
- 21:02Yeah, it doesn't figure, does it? Come on? A vacant
- 21:11latover, Joe. Two plainclothesmen and uniformed officers were keeping the crowd bank.
- 21:18An ambulance was drawn up of the curb, but it was empty. When
- 21:21we got down to the rear of the lot, we found out why they
- 21:23were waiting for the coroner. The woman was young, not much more than
- 21:27thirty. Her body was half sprawled across the muddy ground and her face was
- 21:30turned upward. It had been badly beaten. They figured it happened last night,
- 21:36Sargeant. Have the fingerprint men been notified? Yeah, how about the
- 21:40crime lab? Just call them. That's good. Now, let's keep everybody
- 21:42out of the Area'll they get here right? Sergeant? Oh, who found
- 21:45the body? One of the kids in the neighborhood own was dead when you
- 21:48found her? Did she live on here about a half mile away? I
- 21:52hear she's got three kids or she had three kids. You've seen enough,
- 21:59Ben, Yeah, let's get on back to headquarter. All the way back
- 22:08to headquarters, Ben and I planned our next move, and by the time
- 22:11we got to hit Backstrand's office, we knew exactly what had to be done.
- 22:15When we told him about the werewolf murder, he didn't say a thing
- 22:18for a minute. He just stared across the room at the calendar on the
- 22:22wall, and then he brought his hand down hard against the desker. Friday
- 22:26Romero, I'm only going to say this once, so get it straight.
- 22:30That guy's pulled his last job in this city. He's through robbing and beating
- 22:34women, and he's through with murder. I'd given you time to track him
- 22:37down, and now I want him in no stalls, no excuses. I
- 22:41want him. I don't care how many men you use, and I don't
- 22:44care how you get him, but get him, That's all. Ben and
- 22:52I worked all that afternoon, right through dinner, up until eight o'clock.
- 22:56By that time, the overall plan was down on paper and already in action.
- 23:00It was one of the biggest things we'd ever tackled, and well,
- 23:03we didn't know if what group was going to work. We only knew it
- 23:06had to work. We had a squad of sixty five cars to stretch out
- 23:11over forty square miles of the city in one big drag net. The blockade
- 23:15itself would be stationary most of the time, and working inside it would be
- 23:19two cars fourteen police women as decoys, with two plain clothesmen assigned to watch
- 23:25each policewoman. If and when the werewolf was sighted in the great convertible,
- 23:27we'd automatically take over the police radio for the whole city, and the backstrand
- 23:30would direct the chase from headquarters. A little after eight, we had coffee
- 23:38and hamburgers and we went to Ben's for a few hours. Ben tucked his
- 23:42kid in bed as usual, and then he laid down for a nap.
- 23:47I talked to his wife till I dozed off in the chair. At eleven
- 23:51thirty. She woke us up. I combed my hair, put on my
- 23:53coat. Cops wives, or like everybody else's, they worry. When we
- 24:00met at a headquarters, we did some last minute checking on details with Backstrand
- 24:03for about a half an hour, and then we were all ready to go.
- 24:07By five minutes past two, half the drag net crew pulled out of
- 24:10the police garage and scattered over the city to their places. By two thirty
- 24:15five, the other half pulled out a few minutes later. Ben and I
- 24:18followed him. At three minutes to three that morning, Backstrand took over communications
- 24:26and checked every car in the operation. It was a good start. Every
- 24:32man in his right place for the right time. The trap was set.
- 24:34All we needed now was to find our suspect, the werewolf inside. Control
- 24:40for the unit eighty K. Control for the unit eighty game eighty K to
- 24:45control four. Go ahead. This is Backstrand standing by him. Eighty K
- 24:48Roger clear kgpl okay Ben now let's go find him. I got a haunts
- 24:55you. Let's try the Wilshire district for sounds are right to me, Let's
- 24:59go. For the first hour and a half we raked the Wilshire District back
- 25:07and forth. Not a sign. Then about thirty eight minutes past four,
- 25:11we headed back for the downtown area and parked in an alley where we could
- 25:15double check on one of our police women decoys. Here comes one of the
- 25:21girls. Now, Joe, fat feet, but her feet are almost as
- 25:25tarred as mine. You know, to see anything else? Been nothing quiet
- 25:27as a church. Wait a minute, cart just turned the corner, heading
- 25:34up in the same direction she so to. It's slowing down. Wait a
- 25:38minute, it's putting up aside her. It's a great convertible. It's him,
- 25:42Joe, Come then, get down. He sees it here right,
- 25:53Yeah, look at that guy. Take off eighty k to control four.
- 25:56Eighty k to control four. We've spotted the suspects. He's driving a gray
- 26:02Ford convertible license six to one Robert three eight Five suspects headed east on Olympic
- 26:07from Alameda, driving without lights. Suspect his arm. He had a fast
- 26:14car and he knew how to drive it. We almost lost him twice.
- 26:18Two minutes after we cited him Backstrand took over full radio control DRAVE thirty Unit
- 26:22EIGHTYK on location eighty K to control four. We're traveling at a high rate
- 26:26of speed, headed east on Olympic crossing Soto Street Control units and units eleven,
- 26:33eight, twelve and thirteen R close in on the intersections at Olympic and
- 26:37Loreno. Units forty one, forty two, forty five and one on four
- 26:41K run on the next and then off in south. Unit's one of five
- 26:45K four forty three D block all main hoes. In the next half hour,
- 26:56the sixty five cars in the drag net had pulled in like a noose
- 26:59around a five mile area. Ben and I hoped it was just a matter
- 27:03of time. Unit eighty K to control four. He's headed north on Presno
- 27:10Street crossing. What are your boulevard? Units eighty K are pursuing suspects eighteen
- 27:21eight o'clock off the intersection on pres and hey, Ben, up there ahead.
- 27:25What's he trying to do? Now? Look he's turning around, yeah,
- 27:26you know, and he's coming right forth. Watch you look out pretty
- 27:32close. Eighty K to control four, exchanging shots with suspect. Watch it
- 27:37Ben here he comes again, likes to use that gun. Duney sure do?
- 27:45Hey Joe, look look he's turning east. He's running for Holland Back
- 27:48Park. Yeah, eighty K to control four. Suspect just drove up over
- 27:52curb and into Holland Back Park. Suspect is in Milwaukee's you're there he has
- 28:14been watching. Looks like a nice baseball game with a new padline. Yeah,
- 28:18come on, let's get him here. Remember I say die? Huh
- 28:21Joe, Joe, can you get a shot at him? Give up?
- 28:29Shot and step out on the open and get your hands in the air.
- 28:32All right, all right, give up, don't shoot. You're a brave
- 28:33killed. Yeah, come on, all right, you get your hands in
- 28:37the air. Come on here, Joe, My god, he's got a
- 28:38knie. I got him. Sure those women were right. He does look
- 28:48like a world wool. Yeah you got your handcuffs? Yeah, okay,
- 29:00got a cigarette and been out for an hour. Middle place across the street.
- 29:06Maybe we can get somewhere. Okay, there's the crew from the forty
- 29:08one hour. Hey, fellas, take him int the robbery, will you?
- 29:11Okay? Thank You's a vending machine in there. Say you got some
- 29:25change for the cigarette machine? Mister, I think so. See who's that
- 29:30guy? All them cops wrapped or in the park A little while ago I
- 29:33picked up the word. We've been reading the paper, you fellows cops.
- 29:41Yeah, sure made it easy for you, didn't he. All you cops
- 29:45had to do was surround the little fellow in the park. Nothing to it.
- 29:48Huh, Yeah, that's right, mister, nothing to it. The
- 30:02story you have just heard was true, only the names were changed to protect
- 30:07the innocent. Walter Barton, known as the Werewolf, was tried and convicted
- 30:11and is now serving a full life sentence at the State Penitentiary. This has
- 30:22been Dragnets, the third in a new series of authorenty cases from official files.
- 30:29Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the office of C. B. Horrell,
- 30:33Chief of Police, Los Angeles Police Department. Tonight's program is dedicated to
- 30:40Sergeant Mario Victor Dyro of the Los Angeles Police Department, who, on the
- 30:45morning of January first, nineteen forty three, gave his life so that yours
- 30:51might be more secure. Drake met came to you from Los Angeles. This
- 31:15is NBC the National Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. What a difference a great
- 31:30score makes, and we really heard it here. They not only introduced new
- 31:37music, they really put it through its paces in this week's show and great
- 31:42e fact, when you get to the end in that chasing, the music
- 31:47just really sells the scene and I absolutely love it. With so many episodes
- 31:52of this program, and the Werewolf is one of them, I haven't actually
- 31:57listened to them since I first played them on the show, so it's been
- 32:00more than seven years since I heard this and was really surprised by how good
- 32:07it was and just really well done. Kind of a mix of tedium and
- 32:12excitement that Dragnet does with the very long chase or search and then that great
- 32:20chase scene at the end, again made by the music and by Jack Webb's
- 32:27acting, and I think it's I think this has definitely improved copy over what
- 32:32we used seven years ago. So just a phenomenal episode and I hope that
- 32:37you enjoyed it well. Now we turn to some listener comments and feedback,
- 32:45and I posted on on when I was recording this and got a comment from
- 32:54Carrie who says Dragnet is one of my favorites thanks. Well, I'm so
- 32:59glad to be bringing this to you again, and I hope you'll be listening
- 33:02next week as we continue on. Oh. One other key evolution I should
- 33:07comment before we go was the announcement by the announcer of the fate of a
- 33:14criminal as opposed to Joe Friday doing it and slowly but surely we're seeing this
- 33:20shape of the dragnet that we would all come to know and love. Really
- 33:24for me, well, that will do it for today. Join us back
- 33:29here on Sunday or Monday, excuse me for pursuit, and we'll be back
- 33:35here next Saturday for another episode of Dragnet. In the meanwhile, send your
- 33:39comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net, follow us on Twitter,
