- 0:11Speaker 1: A radio god. You know they got the Radio Hall
- 0:13Speaker 1: of Fame. This is like he would be on the
- 0:15Speaker 1: radio Mount Rushmore, the greatest living DJ Scott Shannon of
- 0:19Speaker 1: course of the true Oldies channel. You can listen to
- 0:22Speaker 1: that and it's great to happen with us. Scott Shannon,
- 0:24Speaker 1: how you doing.
- 0:26Speaker 2: I'm so happy to be here on seven to ten
- 0:29Speaker 2: woor home of the Sean Hannity Show and the legendary
- 0:34Speaker 2: Mark Simone.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And you are the voice of the Sean Hannity Show
- 0:38Speaker 1: of course every day.
- 0:40Speaker 2: But he's a neighbor of mine, you know.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Oh you mean that Florida. Yeah, yeah, I.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Mean I don't live right down the street from him,
- 0:49Speaker 2: but I'm close by. Let's put it that way. It's
- 0:51Speaker 2: a different area, let's put it that way.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And when you're near his house, tell us about the noise,
- 0:57Speaker 1: the loud parties. Is that what's going on there?
- 0:59Speaker 2: No, there's nothing going on, by the way, I thought
- 1:03Speaker 2: by you. The other night, I was my wife's birthday
- 1:07Speaker 2: was on Saturday and we went to eat probably a
- 1:12Speaker 2: place you go to La Penguin.
- 1:15Speaker 1: The Penguin is Greenwich, right, that's correct.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Well, we were going in there and I noticed the
- 1:24Speaker 2: guys sitting on the table next to me. He kept
- 1:27Speaker 2: looking at me and he said, aren't you Scott Shannon?
- 1:29Speaker 2: And I said yeah, And I thought he might listen
- 1:33Speaker 2: to me on the True Oldies channeler an old PLJ Listen.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I listened to you all the time on Mark some
- 1:40Speaker 2: own show.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Well, you see that's our audience, that very upscale, well
- 1:44Speaker 1: to do Penguin type crowd, that's who listens.
- 1:47Speaker 2: To That's amazing. I said, yeah. The fact I'm going
- 1:51Speaker 2: to be on there coming Monday, I said. You know,
- 1:56Speaker 2: we often discussed the power of the swifties, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 2: and you're always amazed at how popular she is and
- 2:04Speaker 2: how many albums she sells. But now this is kind
- 2:09Speaker 2: of weird. Did you hear about the museum in Germany? No, Well,
- 2:14Speaker 2: there's a big, famous museum there. I don't know what
- 2:18Speaker 2: the name of the place is, but they have a
- 2:21Speaker 2: picture of the Shakespeare character Ophelia and there's a song
- 2:28Speaker 2: on her album, you know, this very popular life of
- 2:31Speaker 2: a Showgirl and it's the first single, I believe Ophelia.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And that's all these swifties are flocking to the museum
- 2:41Speaker 2: to take pictures and to be there and look at Ophelia.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Hey, how does that loga saying no?
- 2:49Speaker 2: And also she's doing she has a video of it
- 2:52Speaker 2: that they've had, like I don't know, some like seventy
- 2:56Speaker 2: million views already in the video. So she becomes she
- 3:02Speaker 2: plays Ophelia, and she's you know, out of some kind
- 3:05Speaker 2: of white gown and she's in a bed of water
- 3:08Speaker 2: lilies and all that. And I think the play the
- 3:12Speaker 2: museum Weissbotten, Do I say that? Right?
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, oh yeah.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But just more more proof that these swift these are
- 3:21Speaker 2: such big fans.
- 3:23Speaker 1: So how does this work? They make an album, there's
- 3:25Speaker 1: twelve songs, and then they tell all the radio stations
- 3:27Speaker 1: this will be the first single, this is the one
- 3:29Speaker 1: we want you to play.
- 3:31Speaker 2: That's how it works. However, believe it or not, I
- 3:34Speaker 2: think she occupied the top ten places with singles from
- 3:39Speaker 2: the album, just songs from the album.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yeah. So, but there have been cases where you guys,
- 3:45Speaker 1: like a smart guy with great ears, like you'll hear
- 3:49Speaker 1: another cut. You said, wait, a minute, this is the one,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and you'll play that, and that'll be coming hit without
- 3:53Speaker 1: the That happened.
- 3:54Speaker 2: That's happened to me several times in my life. Wan
- 3:56Speaker 2: involved a group that's been in the headline lately.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Kiss.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. I left the radio business for a
- 4:06Speaker 2: short period back in the seventies. I was young and
- 4:09Speaker 2: crazy and wanted to live in La I didn't know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: I didn't understand what a hell hole. But I got
- 4:18Speaker 2: a job at Casablanca Records, which had Kiss on their label.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I happened. I knew the CEO, the owner, Neil Bogar,
- 4:27Speaker 2: you know his name. They had a movie about him
- 4:30Speaker 2: that was a big flop I had. When Kiss first started,
- 4:33Speaker 2: he wanted All he wanted to do was get Kiss
- 4:36Speaker 2: played on Top forty radio. So I suggested that they
- 4:40Speaker 2: record this song I thought to be cute. It was
- 4:43Speaker 2: an oldie from the sixties done by maybe you remember
- 4:48Speaker 2: Bobby Rydell and Kissing Time.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Bobby Rydell's still around, isn't he.
- 4:53Speaker 2: No, he's past. I'm sorry.
- 4:55Speaker 1: A couple of years ago he was still around.
- 4:57Speaker 2: But the group Kiss, Actually we've had to record that
- 5:01Speaker 2: because I said that and Gene Simmons never let me
- 5:05Speaker 2: forget that year the A Hole made us record that
- 5:09Speaker 2: song Kissing Time. And I also actually toured with the band.
- 5:16Speaker 2: He put me on the road with the band to
- 5:19Speaker 2: go around the different cities and get them interviewed on
- 5:23Speaker 2: the radio stations and possibly they would play their music
- 5:27Speaker 2: and we were doing it. And you got to understand,
- 5:30Speaker 2: Ace Frehley was a different kind of musician. He was,
- 5:36Speaker 2: you know, he was a little wacky, but he a
- 5:42Speaker 2: little bit more whacky, but he was a great guitar player.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Ace Frehley was an awesome guitar player. And as you know,
- 5:50Speaker 2: he just died at the age of seventy four. He
- 5:53Speaker 2: fell at his home. He's got a home studio and
- 5:58Speaker 2: he got a brain bleed and they kept him alive
- 6:02Speaker 2: like four or five weeks, and he finally passed away
- 6:06Speaker 2: on Friday.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Wow.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But he was a very special guy. And the funny
- 6:11Speaker 2: part about it is the guys who actually threw him
- 6:14Speaker 2: out of the band all of a sudden love him.
- 6:17Speaker 2: They put out these statements about Ace Frehley and and
- 6:21Speaker 2: Gene Simmons and the singer Paul Stanley actually run that
- 6:26Speaker 2: thing you know that's there, that's their baby. And if
- 6:31Speaker 2: you were if you worked in the band, you had
- 6:33Speaker 2: a salary. But they they owned the band, so to speak.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I didn't know. Now this year, you spent a year
- 6:40Speaker 1: on the road with him, I imagine, do a concert,
- 6:42Speaker 1: go right back to hotel, go right to sleep right. No,
- 6:44Speaker 1: there were no parties nothing.
- 6:47Speaker 2: They had parties every night. Don't remember that song rock
- 6:50Speaker 2: and roll all night and party every day. That's kiss
- 6:54Speaker 2: and And it's a funny thing about it too, that
- 6:58Speaker 2: the Ace Ace and Peter Christ the drummer, both had
- 7:04Speaker 2: problems in certain areas. All right. Every every time I'd
- 7:09Speaker 2: go out with as freely to the radio station, he
- 7:12Speaker 2: always had a bottle of Blue Nun, remember that wine.
- 7:18Speaker 2: He would carry the blue Nun bottle with him everywhere
- 7:21Speaker 2: he went and just sip off of it. And I
- 7:24Speaker 2: remember we were we were doing an autograph party in Atlanta,
- 7:29Speaker 2: remember the Peaches record stores. They were huge, and we
- 7:35Speaker 2: were doing a personal appearance. And back then, they wore
- 7:38Speaker 2: all those kiss outfits everywhere they went. That was what
- 7:43Speaker 2: they did. So they get up and get They wanted
- 7:45Speaker 2: to be famous and successful so bad they had makeup
- 7:49Speaker 2: artists and make up do all their makeup and get
- 7:52Speaker 2: in those big stupid boots and they would it would
- 7:55Speaker 2: go to the station with me, and also I would
- 7:58Speaker 2: take them to We set up this big, big promotion
- 8:02Speaker 2: at the Peaches store. So there was probably five thousand
- 8:08Speaker 2: kids in line to meet Kiss and all of a
- 8:12Speaker 2: sudden they got ready to leave. They had a couple
- 8:14Speaker 2: of limos out front, and Jean Simmons says, hey, Scott,
- 8:19Speaker 2: where the hell is Ace. I said, I don't know,
- 8:22Speaker 2: I don't know where Ace is. Let me look around.
- 8:25Speaker 2: So I found him. I came back out and he
- 8:27Speaker 2: was talking to the manager of the Peaches store and
- 8:31Speaker 2: they were sitting in his blue nun bottle back in
- 8:33Speaker 2: the storeroom, and I came back. I said, Ace, it's
- 8:37Speaker 2: time to go, and Jeane says, he's going to leave
- 8:40Speaker 2: without you're taking the limos. So sure enough, Simmons just
- 8:45Speaker 2: took off and took the other two members, Peter and Paul,
- 8:50Speaker 2: but left Ace in full uniform in the back room
- 8:54Speaker 2: at the Peaches with me.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Hard to hail a cab dressed like that.
- 8:58Speaker 2: So we were I was going to get a cab.
- 9:01Speaker 2: He's got those big boots on. He says, Nah, it
- 9:03Speaker 2: right down the street. Let's just walk down there. So
- 9:07Speaker 2: we're in right on Peachtree Boulevard in Atlanta, walking down
- 9:12Speaker 2: the street and some kids come by. They were at
- 9:16Speaker 2: the I guess, at the thing and they had like
- 9:18Speaker 2: this little Ford, I don't know what it was, a
- 9:21Speaker 2: very small Ford Falcon or something like that, and say,
- 9:26Speaker 2: you guys want to ride? He said, yeah, we'll go
- 9:29Speaker 2: with you. And he had to put his friend in
- 9:33Speaker 2: the back seat because Ace couldn't sit back there because
- 9:35Speaker 2: they had the big boots on. So we're going. It's
- 9:38Speaker 2: only two blocks down the road and the kid says, hey,
- 9:42Speaker 2: you're funny. You dressed up like Ace Frehley to come
- 9:44Speaker 2: to the Beaches store. I said, no, no, this is Ace,
- 9:49Speaker 2: and the kid swat. He pulled the car over and
- 9:53Speaker 2: he says, oh my god, A's Frayley's in my car
- 9:55Speaker 2: and he looks over him and they can't even talk
- 9:58Speaker 2: at that point. So finally they drop us off at
- 10:02Speaker 2: the hotel. That was pretty funny. And you got to
- 10:05Speaker 2: remember when when Kiss finally got fairly successful, they all
- 10:10Speaker 2: four put out solo albums. That was Neil Bogart's idea.
- 10:15Speaker 2: They put out solo albums and Kiss I Mean and
- 10:18Speaker 2: Ace had the only one that really sold. It was
- 10:21Speaker 2: the biggest of all four. He had the biggest following
- 10:25Speaker 2: and the only and the only big hit. You remember
- 10:27Speaker 2: that song called back in the New York Group.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I love that song. That's right, huge it. Hey, we
- 10:32Speaker 1: got to We're out of time, but can we continue
- 10:35Speaker 1: this next time?
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah? I got a lot, I got I got Britney
- 10:39Speaker 2: Spears News.
- 10:40Speaker 1: All right, we'll get to that next time. But hey,
- 10:42Speaker 1: check out the True Oldies Channel. You can go to
- 10:45Speaker 1: True Oldieschannel dot com. You can listen to it. It's great.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And Scott Channon, thanks for being with us.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Thank you Mark. Talk to you soon.
