Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: While we watch and waits Trump and his comments on
- 0:03Speaker 1: the situation in the Middle East. He's done a media
- 0:06Speaker 1: stand up a short time ago. Katie Fisher, a US
- 0:08Speaker 1: correspondent with US Katie, what's he saying?
- 0:12Speaker 2: Well, he's not doing anything to end this speculation as
- 0:15Speaker 2: to whether or not the US is going to go
- 0:17Speaker 2: in and help Israel. Then it's strikes.
- 0:20Speaker 3: We get quarter one GDP data out today.
- 0:22Speaker 1: We were expecting an increase of point four that's according
- 0:26Speaker 1: to the economists. Now they reckon something more like point
- 0:29Speaker 1: seven for the quarter. Manufacturing data looks strong for quarter one,
- 0:33Speaker 1: but things are potentially more dicey for quarter two. David
- 0:36Speaker 1: Sways is the CEO of Dodson Group. This is a
- 0:40Speaker 1: manufacturer seventy five staff across three manufacturing plants in Auckland
- 0:45Speaker 1: and is with us for the lowdown. David, good morning,
- 0:49Speaker 1: Thanks for having me on RAN.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Great to have you here. So you're a manufacturer, you're
- 0:53Speaker 3: an exporter. It's a niche market. Can you just give
- 0:56Speaker 3: us an idea of what it is you do?
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yes, known for the dots in line of high performance
- 1:02Speaker 2: car parts that we make here in Auckland and we
- 1:04Speaker 2: distribute internationally. So those are those are transmission parts, so
- 1:09Speaker 2: they're upgrade parts to make kind of fast cars faster.
- 1:13Speaker 2: And then we also manufacture precision components for other UH
- 1:17Speaker 2: other New Zealand UH manufacturers and exporters, so things like
- 1:21Speaker 2: precision precision metal parts, gears, gearboxes. So we're really kind
- 1:26Speaker 2: of on the front end of the economic cycle and
- 1:28Speaker 2: we get a get a good look early. We're usually
- 1:30Speaker 2: kind of six months ahead of you know, kind of
- 1:34Speaker 2: the data that's coming out in the news and what
- 1:36Speaker 2: the central banks point notes. We we get a good
- 1:39Speaker 2: kind of early look at what's happening in the economy.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Does that mean right now things are actually okay for you?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean look for us, I would say things
- 1:48Speaker 2: probably turned a corner in like February March time print,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and we actually feel pretty good about what's happening out there.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I know, you know, there was the weak print on
- 1:57Speaker 2: the p M I last month, and that's a prised
- 2:00Speaker 2: us a little bit because you know, it hasn't shown
- 2:03Speaker 2: up in the order book. I think maybe there was
- 2:05Speaker 2: there's been some trepidation on you know, what's coming on
- 2:08Speaker 2: to the US, But I think overall, I mean, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: order books are holding up pretty strong, and uh, you know,
- 2:16Speaker 2: for the good news out of this GDP print is
- 2:19Speaker 2: that you know, wages worked have been about flat and
- 2:22Speaker 2: I know that doesn't sound good for workers, but that
- 2:25Speaker 2: that implies productivities up and and that's good for the
- 2:28Speaker 2: economy and that's good for the standard of living of
- 2:31Speaker 2: New Zealand. To see that productivity, uh, you know, back
- 2:35Speaker 2: on it on the type of of curve and type
- 2:37Speaker 2: of increase that we want to see. So and I
- 2:40Speaker 2: think any business you know, who who who, uh you know,
- 2:44Speaker 2: had their head in the right place over the last
- 2:46Speaker 2: two years when things were slow, was investing in the
- 2:48Speaker 2: business to try to come out you know with a
- 2:51Speaker 2: productivity increase on the other side whence things picked up.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And I know that's certainly certainly where we're at right now.
- 2:57Speaker 1: That's fantastic to hear and certainly reflect than that survey
- 3:00Speaker 1: we saw from two Degrees this week how businesses are
- 3:04Speaker 1: feeling about productivity, which is always one of our big problems.
- 3:07Speaker 3: David appreciate that. David spaz CEO of Dodson Group.
