Transcript
- 0:00And so we snuck in a little episode on this Wednesday.
- 0:04And so in episode five of our Rooted series,
- 0:07Built to Last, community trials and faith that
- 0:10holds. And so deep faith is personal. It is never
- 0:13designed to be private. And so in this final
- 0:16Rooted episode... We're going to be talking about
- 0:19why Christian community is essential, how trials
- 0:21expose and strengthen our foundation, and what
- 0:24it looks like when faith feels difficult. And
- 0:26we're going to be talking about Hebrews 10 and
- 0:2812, James 1, and Jesus teaching in Matthew 7.
- 0:32This episode should help you build life that
- 0:35keeps you turned towards Christ. And so welcome
- 0:38back to Fostering Faith. I am your host Tracy,
- 0:39and today we're going to be closing out our September
- 0:42Rooted series, A Faith That Holds. This month
- 0:45we have talked about abiding in Christ, receiving
- 0:47scripture, praying honestly and obeying an ordinary
- 0:50life. And today we're going to be bringing these
- 0:52practices into two places where faith is tested
- 0:55and strengthened, community and trials. Deep
- 0:58faith is personal and it is never designed to
- 1:02be private. And we cannot borrow someone else's
- 1:04relationship with Jesus, but it could also cannot
- 1:07live the New Testament vision and discipleship
- 1:10alone. We are called a body, a family, a household,
- 1:14living stones. being built together. And faith
- 1:17that never faced pressure looks strong until
- 1:20the storm arrives. And Jesus ends the Sermon
- 1:23on the Mount with two builders, both here in
- 1:26his words, both built a house, both face rain,
- 1:29floods and winds. The storm is not evidence and
- 1:32one builder was abandoned. The storm comes to
- 1:35both. The difference is the foundation. And so
- 1:39let us pray. And so dear Heavenly Father, thank
- 1:41you that we are established as in Christ. For
- 1:43the listener who is alone, provide a safe, faithful
- 1:46community. For those that are in a storm, give
- 1:49endurance. Show us where our foundations are
- 1:51shallow and teach us to build on the words of
- 1:54Christ. Hold us whenever we feel weak. We pray
- 1:57this in Jesus' name. Amen. And so you need people
- 2:01to remind you that they're here to help us. And
- 2:06so Hebrews 10 tells believers not to neglect
- 2:09gathering together to encourage one another,
- 2:11especially as the day of Christ approaches. Why?
- 2:15Because we forget. We forget God's faithfulness
- 2:18when the week is hard. We forget who we are when
- 2:22shame gets loud. We forget hope when grief narrows
- 2:25our vision. Christian community is one of God's
- 2:28gifts for remembering. And so just remember in
- 2:32the Old Testament, Joshua's people forgot who
- 2:34he was because there was nobody there to remind
- 2:36them. whenever they passed by altars and that
- 2:38was like the so important thing about the building
- 2:40of the altars and so you could go by oh remember
- 2:42whenever he brought us to the red sea oh oh remember
- 2:44this and oh remember that and so if sometimes
- 2:46whenever we're so lost in the storm we can't
- 2:49see up or down we forget the altars that he has
- 2:51built and that's why it's so important to have
- 2:54people surround us with those memories oh you
- 2:56remember that last time that you went through
- 2:58the storm oh you remember this time and so we
- 3:00often forget about those people there are there
- 3:04to remind us. And so getting into those small
- 3:06groups. And so oftentimes the fall seasons of
- 3:08small groups will start in your churches. And
- 3:10so get plugged in, get plugged in to a small
- 3:14group. And so you need people there to remind
- 3:17you of the truth without minimizing your pain.
- 3:19People who can celebrate you without competing,
- 3:23correct you without controlling, listen without
- 3:25making your story about them, and pray whenever
- 3:29your words are gone. And other people need that
- 3:33from you. Community is not merely attending the
- 3:35same event. You can sit in a crowd of a church
- 3:38and remain completely alone and unknown. It's
- 3:41the back row specialist. I used to be one. It
- 3:43was I would get in and get out. A biblical fellowship
- 3:47requires presence, honesty, service, patience,
- 3:50forgiveness, and shared devotion to Christ. And
- 3:53it's beautiful. And it's inconvenient. People
- 3:57misunderstand. Schedules collide. Personalities
- 4:00differ. Someone forgets. Someone speaks carelessly.
- 4:05Community does not work because Christians are
- 4:08easy. It works because Christ is faithful and
- 4:12teaches his people to forgive. And so safe community
- 4:15is not boundary -free community. And so Christian's
- 4:20love does not require unlimited access. Forgiveness
- 4:24does not automatically restore trust, and reconciliation
- 4:27requires truth. repentance, and safety on both
- 4:30sides. And so Romans 12 says, if possible, as
- 4:34far as it depends on you, live in peace with
- 4:37everybody. That wording recognizes that peace
- 4:40does not depend only on one person. You can pursue
- 4:44peace and still set boundaries. You can forgive
- 4:47and still decline to return to a harmful pattern.
- 4:52Healthy community welcomes accountability, but
- 4:54accountability is not control. A trustworthy
- 4:58person points you towards Jesus, respects wise
- 5:01boundaries, and tells the truth with love. It
- 5:04does not demand secrecy that protects harm. If
- 5:10you are experiencing church hurt, I am going
- 5:13to tell you now, get over it and find another
- 5:16group. I'm not going to tell you that. I'm not
- 5:18going to tell you that. And so if you're experiencing
- 5:21church hurt, it's, oh, just get over it and find
- 5:23another group. Wounds need honest healing. But
- 5:26I also do not want the failure of people to permanently
- 5:33isolate you from the gift that God intends. Move
- 5:36carefully. Ask God for wise, safe people. Let
- 5:39trust grow at speed. Because we are broken people.
- 5:43It is not turturt. It is people hurt. People
- 5:46are flawed. We make mistakes. But it's about
- 5:49going back and looking and revisiting those hurts
- 5:52and taking that to Him. And so trials reveal
- 5:55foundations. James 1 says to consider it great
- 5:59joy when we experience various trials because
- 6:01the testing of faith produces endurance. James
- 6:04is not saying that pain feels joyful. He is naming
- 6:08what God can produce through a trial. Test reveals
- 6:12what is real. Pressure shows us where we are
- 6:15placed, where we trust our faith. And so financial
- 6:18crisis may reveal our security is rooted in control.
- 6:21Rejection may reveal how deeply approval defines
- 6:25us. Delay may reveal that we trust God's timing
- 6:28only when it matches ours. Revelation can be
- 6:31painful, but it is mercy. God shows a weak place
- 6:35so we can strengthen it. The aim is endurance,
- 6:38not a dramatic amount of spiritual intensity,
- 6:41but the capacity to teach and keep trusting and
- 6:43keep obeying and keep returning to Jesus over
- 6:46time. Endurance does not mean you never feel
- 6:50tired. It means that tiredness does not get the
- 6:53final vote. It does not mean that you never question.
- 6:56It means you bring the question to God instead
- 6:59of building our life around it. And so fixing
- 7:02our eyes on Jesus. And so Hebrews 12 tells us
- 7:05to run with endurance the race set before us.
- 7:08Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter
- 7:11of faith. We often fix our eyes on the storm,
- 7:14on other people's pace. And I have said this
- 7:17time and time again, just... We often, even that's
- 7:21like you're at the gym and you're running on
- 7:22a treadmill and you're like at a 6 .3 or whatever.
- 7:25And then the guy next to you or the girl next
- 7:27to you is just running and they're like at a
- 7:286 .7 or another 7, they're at an 8. And you try
- 7:30to look over at them and then you lose your footing
- 7:33and try to fall off the treadmill. It's because
- 7:35you lost your focus. Your face is not on that.
- 7:37And so oftentimes too, you'll see people that
- 7:39are in like Olympics or they're in their race.
- 7:41And if they turn their head and not keeping their
- 7:44head forward, they lose because they're concentrating
- 7:47on the guy behind them. It really can take your
- 7:50off and just misguide you. And so fixing your
- 7:52eyes on Jesus, returning to who and what he said
- 7:55and what he has done. Enduring the cross, despising
- 7:58its shame and seated in the right hand of God.
- 8:00Our endurance is not vague optimism. It is anchored
- 8:03in the risen King. Jesus is not standing at the
- 8:06finish line, shouting for you to try harder.
- 8:09By his spirit and his presence is with you in
- 8:12the race. He began the work. He sustains the
- 8:14work and he will complete the work. And so what?
- 8:18what it looks like on an ordinary Tuesday. And
- 8:21so perseverance may look like getting out of
- 8:24bed and praying an honest sentence. It may look
- 8:27like going back to counseling, attending a group
- 8:30when isolation feels easier, opening up a scripture
- 8:33after a season of dryness, or choosing not to
- 8:36numb pain with a habit that once controlled you.
- 8:40It may look like asking for help before the crisis
- 8:43becomes collapse. And there's no shame in needing
- 8:46support. Galatians 6 tells us to carry one another's
- 8:49burdens. Some burdens are too heavy to carry
- 8:52alone. At the same time, the same passage teaches
- 8:55each person to carry their own load. Healthy
- 8:58community helps us take over that responsibility
- 9:01and supports obedience rather than replacing
- 9:04it. If you're walking through severe anxiety,
- 9:06depression, trauma, and thoughts of harming yourself,
- 9:10prayer and professional help do not compete.
- 9:13Please tell a trusted person and reach out to
- 9:16a qualified professional. If you're in any immediate
- 9:20danger, contact the local emergency services
- 9:23or crisis services that where you live. God can
- 9:26care and meet us with skilled help. Faithful
- 9:29friends, pastors, physicians, counselors, we
- 9:31are all here to help one another. And so, build
- 9:36a rooted support system. This week, write down
- 9:39four names or spaces. One person who can pray
- 9:44with you, one person that you can tell the truth,
- 9:48one person that you can encourage, one community
- 9:50where you can show up consistently. If that space
- 9:54is blank, it's not condemnation, it's direction.
- 9:59Ask God for the next step. Visit your next step
- 10:02in your church. Send one message. Visit one group.
- 10:07Invite one person to coffee or walk. Community
- 10:11usually begins with an ordinary act of courage.
- 10:17Then write your storm plan. When pressure arises,
- 10:22what truth will you return to? Who will you contact?
- 10:28What spiritual rhythm will you protect? And what
- 10:30warning signs tell you that you're in isolation?
- 10:34Do not wait for the storm to design the foundation.
- 10:38And so as we go back through this month, where
- 10:40is God invited you to remain? What scripture
- 10:43is He planting in you? What honest prayers do
- 10:47you need to keep praying? What faithful yes is
- 10:50still in front of you? Who is part of your community?
- 10:55Where is endurance growing? And so our anchor
- 10:58passage says, as you receive Christ Jesus your
- 11:01Lord, so walk with Him rooted and built up in
- 11:04Him and established in faith. The picture is
- 11:08clear. Life with Christ is sustained by grace
- 11:11and not manufactured willpower. God is the gardener
- 11:15and the builder. He is the farmer. We participate
- 11:18through trust and obedience. But grace is underneath
- 11:22the entire process. Your faith does not hold
- 11:26because your grip is perfect. It holds because
- 11:29Christ is holding you. And so let's end in prayer.
- 11:34Father God, thank you so much for this month.
- 11:37Thank you for what you've hidden in our roots
- 11:39that you are growing. Establish us in Christ.
- 11:42Teach us to abide. Receive your word and pray
- 11:44honestly and obey quickly. Love your people and
- 11:48endure trials with hope. Heal church wounds and
- 11:51lead us towards a safe community. Strengthen
- 11:54our learned listeners and tired listeners. Bring
- 11:57help to those persons who feel alone. Expose
- 12:00our weak foundations with mercy and rebuild them
- 12:02on the words of Jesus. When storms come, remind
- 12:05us that you are present. Whenever we stumble,
- 12:08help us return. Let us, our lives, abound in
- 12:11thanksgiving, not because we are circumstances
- 12:13is easy, but because Christ is faithful. And
- 12:16we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. So thank you
- 12:19so much for staying tuned for this little bonus
- 12:22episode. We thank you that we have walked through
