Transcript
- 0:00I'm Christina, and I'm t, and this is the Pretty and Pink Again podcast where motherhood meets Rediscovery.
- 0:17Hi everybody, happy summer.
- 0:18I cannot believe it is almost the end of July.
- 0:21This summer has been flying by.
- 0:23It feels so cliche to say it, but I know we say this every summer, but it is just flying by.
- 0:29So Christina and I are not recording a new episode this week.
- 0:34Christina was away with her family for her 40th birthday, and she'll recap the whole thing when she comes back and then I was also away with Nick.
- 0:44We went to Italy, we went to Rome and Positano.
- 0:46We went away for a whole week.
- 0:48It was a really great trip, but we were delayed a day coming home.
- 0:52It was like a whole thing.
- 0:53So Christina and I both have suitcases that are packed and laundry that is currently touching the ceilings.
- 1:00So we are going to take a break from recording and just kind of get our lives back in order.
- 1:06But I just wanna ask you a question.
- 1:08W-why is it that when you go through an airport, why do you have to walk through an enormous perfumery before you board your plane?
- 1:18Whose idea was it to put every single perfume ever made with test strips right before you walk onto your gate and spray all of that perfume all over yourselves and cologne.
- 1:28Why is the guy in 13C allowed to douse himself in six different types of Creed colognes before he boards a plane where an enclosed area with recycled air?, I don't understand the perfume at the airport situation.
- 1:44So if somebody can please clear that up for me, I would greatly appreciate it.
- 1:47But anyways, I digress.
- 1:50We chose a great episode for you, and it's summertime, and in the summertime, we spend a lot of family time together, Christina both and I, with our immediate family, our extended family.
- 2:02And spending time with our family, while it can be challenging just logistically, it also is one of the most wonderful things that we can do and grow close together as our nuclear family.
- 2:15But the part that I don't think Christina and I were necessarily warned about is that as we are deep in this season of our husbands and our kids, if you're in that season, then you're gonna spend less time with friends.
- 2:29It's not that you're making a decision on purpose to spend less time with your friends, it's just what's happening.
- 2:35Since we are deep in the season of hanging out and spending a lot of time with our husbands and our kids and a little bit less time with our friends, we thought it would be a great time to replay this episode for you.
- 2:47So we get new listeners every single week.
- 2:50There's a whole back catalog of great episodes, so we're pulling this one forward.
- 2:54It's episode number 26, Friendships in Every Season.
- 2:57In this episode, we talked about how we think female friendships work, how groups form, how cliques forms, why one-on-one friendships seem to allow you to go a little bit deeper than the group text, the difference between a social friend and maybe that one-on-one real friend, and what to do with the sting of being left out.
- 3:19Th- this was a really great episode.
- 3:21I..
- 3:21christine and I would like to do, like, a part two of this one, and we kinda get into that Danielle Bayer Jackson book about fighting for our friendships.
- 3:28So if you've heard it, hear it again, and if you haven't, this is a great place to start.
- 3:34And we'll catch up with everybody very soon.
- 3:38I hope everybody's having a great summer, enjoying their time at home with their families.
- 3:42If you are traveling, I hope you are not dousing yourself in perfume or cologne before you get on an airplane.
- 3:48And love you all.
- 3:50Enjoy Hello?
- 3:53Hello.
- 3:53Hey, how are you?
- 3:55I'm good.
- 3:55I'm good.
- 3:56How are you?
- 3:56Good.
- 3:57I am so excited about this episode because I feel like we've had this one brewing Yeah.
- 4:02For a little while, and we keep saying that.
- 4:05We're in like the season of just me and you here, and I feel like this has just been, this is such a good one for a me and you conversation.
- 4:14It is.
- 4:15There's a lot of me and you.
- 4:16Yeah.
- 4:16Which is really nice.
- 4:17I know there has been so much and this, we'll get into some of that.
- 4:20Yeah, for sure.
- 4:21But I like our dyad.
- 4:23I know, me too.
- 4:25This has been great.
- 4:25It's great.
- 4:26I know we had a long time where we just got to catch up and really talk about the things that we wanted to talk about.
- 4:31But this was also very requested from the Pippa's is to dive a little bit more into female friendships.
- 4:38Mm-hmm.
- 4:38And I, we can go so many places with that.
- 4:41Sure.
- 4:42But I loved.
- 4:43What you wanted to talk about.
- 4:45Yeah.
- 4:46I recently read the book by Danielle Bayer Jackson.
- 4:51I read the audio version and I feel like I should have bought the hard copy'cause I would've kept it almost like an encyclopedia with Post-it notes.
- 4:58But she touches upon all these different types of female friendships and what serves you, what serves you at different times in your life.
- 5:06And she interviews all these different women and what's so interesting is.
- 5:12Women statistically do better in what's called a dyad, which means two people, but yet women always find themselves in group settings.
- 5:22Interesting.
- 5:23And in these different groups that you form throughout your life.
- 5:28Dynamics change.
- 5:30And in those groups, that's when you start to feel these bad feelings like loneliness, intimidation.
- 5:36Am I less than we're not equals, or they have a better profession.
- 5:40All this comparison then ensues.
- 5:43Mm-hmm.
- 5:43So I was very inspired by.
- 5:46The book, when I was researching for this podcast over like all of the female friendships that I've had in my life, I know from like elementary school to middle school to high school, to college, to then insert, I met Nick and he became my best friend.
- 5:58Mm-hmm.
- 5:58And then.
- 5:59My mom friends, which carries me to present day.
- 6:02I know.
- 6:03I feel like when you sent me,'cause we like to do little guides just so that we can have a little information on what we're gonna chat about and sometimes we see those in advance of the episode that we're filming.
- 6:15And when T sent this over to me, I was like, so you journaled?
- 6:18I was like, you did an exercise here.
- 6:20This was a therapy exercise.
- 6:21I think I did.
- 6:21I think I did a therapy exercise.
- 6:23I love it.
- 6:24And I'm excited to get into this and I'm not, I'm typically not long-winded.
- 6:28No.
- 6:28Usually like straight into the point.
- 6:30I don't need a long time to let things marinate.
- 6:33Usually I feel it, I think, and I say it, and then this side was like, oh, wait a second.
- 6:37Let me go back a little bit.
- 6:38Because a lot of themes occur.
- 6:41Yeah.
- 6:42Over time for sure.
- 6:43And I think that.
- 6:44Friendships, especially as we can say it two ways, right?
- 6:49We could say it either through motherhood, which is a huge transition.
- 6:53Mm-hmm.
- 6:53A huge life transition.
- 6:55And you can also just say, as we get older, right, things change, and there's a lot of layers there of things that we can unpack for female friendships.
- 7:06And so I'm gonna let you take the lead on this one because this, what you had written down was just very intriguing.
- 7:14So when I look at my friends, and I'm gonna ask you, when you look at your friends, what are some common threads?
- 7:20Do you think, A, you have commonalities between all of your friends, or do you think that all of your friends are completely different and share different characteristics?
- 7:29I think a little of both, and I think it depends on where the friendship originated from.
- 7:34So I think, okay, good answer.
- 7:35I have a lot of friendships, which I've mentioned here before, that.
- 7:40Were due to something.
- 7:42So I have friendships growing up.
- 7:43Obviously the girls that I grew up with from my hometown, I had mentioned that we either danced or did theater or all of the above together.
- 7:51So there was like that sort of commonality and so a shared experience, a together shared experience later on.
- 7:56But then we don't do that anymore.
- 7:58Then my college group of girlfriends, we all dance together.
- 8:02That's a group.
- 8:03Okay.
- 8:03And then I, so again, another shared experience.
- 8:05I had girls that I lived with, and so again, another shared experience.
- 8:10And those were all of like my bridesmaids.
- 8:12Those were girls that I've known for the better part of 15 years, at least at this point, it's probably 20 years at this point.
- 8:19Wow.
- 8:19So I've had all of those friendships for 20 plus years, which is crazy to say that.
- 8:24Mm-hmm.
- 8:25Because of the, those friendships started so early in life.
- 8:28I don't know if I.
- 8:29Could say I was looking for specific qualities in people.
- 8:32Mm-hmm.
- 8:33A lot of those friendships just came about from those shared experiences and then lasted through that test of time through, they've just lasted through seasons of time.
- 8:43But now I think that I have certain qualities that I definitely look for in friendships, in a friendship.
- 8:50So I think that, so you had said in your notes that you thought that this season of motherhood.
- 8:57Was like a lonely time For sure.
- 8:59For friendships for you.
- 9:00Mm-hmm.
- 9:00Do you think that it's because it was harder for you to make friends in this season?
- 9:06I think part of that was because I had kids a little bit later in life.
- 9:10Mm-hmm.
- 9:11So a lot of my So who were surrounded by weren't like your people because I wasn't in that shared experience for a long time.
- 9:17If I look at things, I was one of the last over.
- 9:21Most groups of people that I, I was one of the last people to enter motherhood.
- 9:25Yes.
- 9:25So I did feel probably from the time I was about 30 to 35, that as people started entering that chapter, I was feeling a little bit disconnected and left behind by some of those friendships.
- 9:37Mm-hmm.
- 9:37I wasn't experiencing the same thing that those people were experiencing.
- 9:41And then even new people that I had met in my thirties.
- 9:45If they were moms when I met them and I was not yet it, there was just a little bit of a disconnect.
- 9:51It didn't mean that there wasn't a friendship that could be had.
- 9:54Me and you were at completely different life stages.
- 9:56Right?
- 9:56But we just weren't able to bond on that level quite yet.
- 10:00We had other things that we bonded.
- 10:01I, I guess the point that I'm like fishing for here is that I think.
- 10:06There's two ways to make a friendship stick and be tacky, and it's these shared experiences being one big pillar for sure.
- 10:16And I'll, I'll share with you my sequence of my or my friendships, but some of my friendships that.
- 10:22I opposite of you, and I think it's just because of the timeline in my age of when I had kids are actually my friendships that have formed during motherhood because it was such a vulnerable time in my life and I was surrounded by women who were in it with me, and it really bonded us together.
- 10:40We shared a lot of time together.
- 10:42We exchanged like.
- 10:44Our deepest, darkest secrets like that bonded us together and like this shared experience, I think really made us stick for sure.
- 10:51That's one thing that I noticed that really stuck out when I was dissecting all of the female friendships or things that make things stick or these shared experiences and.
- 11:02Now what I'm seeing is that as my kids are getting a little older and they still have little kids, but I'm not doing as many things with my friends anymore because my kids are older.
- 11:12I'm doing more things with my kids.
- 11:14So like they have their own lives now.
- 11:16It, it's harder to, and their, their lives blend.
- 11:18Totally.
- 11:18And the lives together.
- 11:19I mean, Nick are trying to.
- 11:21Throw our time until the six of us being this nuclear family.
- 11:25So how I'm continuing to cultivate my friendships are these catchups, whether it's like a phone call or a coffee or things like that.
- 11:34So.
- 11:35We are not sharing the same experiences, but I'm still trying to make an effort to catch up and find out about each other's.
- 11:43Keep in touch, experience in touch.
- 11:44Do you know what I'm saying?
- 11:44Yes.
- 11:45But it's, I think that shift, it becomes hard.
- 11:47It's hard to shift through different phases and time when you enter motherhood, it's things.
- 11:56I think feels two different ways.
- 11:58It feels like time stands still, and then it also feels like time flies and you can't even catch up with what season you're in.
- 12:04And so I feel like even in the short.
- 12:07Time that I've become a mom.
- 12:09While you've been a mom already.
- 12:11I think that I've seen the shift of you, like just of your kids going from being very little and you're very connected to everything going on with your kids to now your kids are growing and really starting to form their own lives, their own friendships.
- 12:26Yes.
- 12:26And now you're trying to keep up with them.
- 12:28Right.
- 12:28I have these like four friends that I became tight with when Joseph was born.
- 12:33Mm-hmm.
- 12:33And we don't really do things as much anymore because.
- 12:37All.
- 12:37We live in different towns, right?
- 12:38All of us live in different towns.
- 12:40Our, we all met at like music class.
- 12:42Our kids all have popped off and some are boys, some are girls.
- 12:45So they're not all friends together, but we all still love and adore each other, and we were all catching up the other day.
- 12:53What is everybody doing?
- 12:54We never see each each other.
- 12:56Who are you even hanging out with?
- 12:57Who are you with?
- 12:58Who are you with?
- 12:59And we all said collectively we spend the most time with our husbands and our children because our kids are getting older.
- 13:06They wanna be social, they wanna have plans.
- 13:08And we are, we're trying to keep them.
- 13:11Yeah, keep them in and hold and hold them close, but.
- 13:15If we didn't have that conversation, one could make an assumption like, oh, this friend has pulled back from me.
- 13:22This friend doesn't wanna be around me.
- 13:23This friend is too busy for me.
- 13:25This friend is to insert whatever.
- 13:27It's a good point you thought you want to have, but.
- 13:31When I think of it like that, my feelings aren't as hurt and I don't feel as sensitive when I have other friends in my life pull away a little bit for sure, because I know that they're replacing me with something else and you're not.
- 13:43I think that I'm probably not one of those friends that you're talking about, like from your point of view, but I'm probably one of those friends that.
- 13:52Other people could say that about where it's, oh, she has pulled back a little bit.
- 13:56You feel like you're pulling away a little bit.
- 13:57I, I have entered this chapter.
- 13:59Mm-hmm.
- 13:59My kids are very small and I'm not in the exact season where you're saying that you're just following your kids around.
- 14:05We're the ones still in the driver's seat with the kids as far as toting them around and doing things together, but we are very much in a family era.
- 14:15I think that it would be easy for people to look at me from the outside and say like, where has she been?
- 14:20I really haven't.
- 14:21It's not that I've put myself out with other people.
- 14:24It's not like you could say, oh, she's just been with this group of people more.
- 14:28We really have just been with our family and we've been.
- 14:33Trying to connect and build that foundation and weeks pass.
- 14:37And I feel like sometimes we don't socialize and see many people, and so it's just interesting hearing it from the other side where you're saying that, yeah, it's, I guess it's easy to always look and assume something negative and it's usually not right.
- 14:52It's usually not.
- 14:55It all.
- 14:55There also is some truth to it, I think because I think I've been in situations where somebody has maybe made, rubbed me the wrong way and it's when people rub me the wrong way, I really think it's more about me than it is about them, honestly.
- 15:08Mm-hmm.
- 15:08I think with a lot of reflection, when somebody does something to me that I don't like, it's more me.
- 15:13Like I might see my, something I don't like in myself, in them, or I like, I don't think it's always the other person.
- 15:20It's not, but I think that's.
- 15:22Okay.
- 15:22I think that it's okay to, you always use the word antennas or like red flags.
- 15:26Yeah.
- 15:26It's easy.
- 15:27I think it's a good thing to sometimes have that wherewithal about yourself, right?
- 15:32Yeah.
- 15:32To just be like, something seems off.
- 15:35But what I would do in that situation is probably pull back a little, so here you, so it could be a mix, so, so here we are in a season where you're pulling back to be close to your family, which is a good thing.
- 15:45And then at the same time, you're pulling back when people piss you off.
- 15:49Yeah.
- 15:49And.
- 15:50Insert friend B who doesn't really know where you're at.
- 15:54You know it's true.
- 15:55So no wonder sometimes female friendships can be very tricky.
- 15:59They're very complicated and we did have some kind of request Yes.
- 16:03To dissect, I guess even that the pulling back of friendships.
- 16:09Yep.
- 16:10And how.
- 16:11That's okay.
- 16:12We always say that there's like a season for certain things.
- 16:16Yep.
- 16:17I think and my a season and a reason, a season and a reason and.
- 16:21I also think that two of the things that have really stuck out to me that are like mantras for my entire life right now, yes.
- 16:29Are quality over quantity.
- 16:31Yeah.
- 16:31I keep saying that theme in every sense.
- 16:33I know it's like in wardrobe, in skincare, in friendships, in just in everything.
- 16:39I feel like that's like my motto right now, which was so different from what I used to be.
- 16:44I was more of like a more is more, is more, is more.
- 16:46I was totally a more is more person and now I'm a very less is more person.
- 16:51And then the other thing that I recite to myself all the time, which I know I've said on this podcast mm-hmm.
- 16:56Is everything doesn't have to be a thing all of the time.
- 17:00Mm.
- 17:00Yeah.
- 17:00Like sometimes there's just seasons for things like we keep saying, and things don't need to end in some like big dramatic way, or they might not even need to end at all.
- 17:11It's just that things phase in and out and.
- 17:15I know even with certain friendships, what I hope that I have with my friendships is that we allow each other to do that, and that it doesn't necessarily mean, oh, is she mad at me?
- 17:27Did something happen?
- 17:28It's just no.
- 17:29We're in a season where I can't give as much of myself to this as I used to for the past 20 years, and you do what you can, but everybody's so stretched so thin right now.
- 17:41Right.
- 17:41It's so hard to do that, and I think.
- 17:44Just being okay with that.
- 17:46So like it's something that I recite to myself, like it doesn't have to be a thing.
- 17:49I feel somebody's pulling back from me a little bit unless I know that I did something wrong, or I'm worried that something may have been misconstrued a certain way or something.
- 17:59I'm just allowing people to do that without making it a thing for myself, and I hope that the friendships that I still have from these 20 years that I keep referencing also allow.
- 18:12The same of me where it's okay if there's like push and pull, there's phasing in and out.
- 18:17And I remember my mom had said when she had a group of friends growing up from childhood and when they all got married and had kids, they all scattered, right?
- 18:27Because everybody is living in different places.
- 18:30Everybody became a mother at different times of their life and really as their kids.
- 18:36Grew up, they reconnected.
- 18:38They always stayed in touch, but they were able to reconnect and get themselves back to that place.
- 18:43But it's because they never had a falling out.
- 18:46They left.
- 18:46There was nothing to fix.
- 18:46There was allowance.
- 18:47There was allowance that people can go out and live their lives and come back, and I think that's.
- 18:53Really important in friendships at this stage is like allowing people to go out, have their own lives, whether that's with family, whether that's with other friendships that of the season of life that they're in now, and know that you're secure enough in your friendship where that.
- 19:10If time permits that you can come back to each other in that same way that you'll pick up like nothing happened.
- 19:16Right.
- 19:16And I think that's where really strong friendships.
- 19:18I agree.
- 19:18I agree.
- 19:19And having that foundation is really important.
- 19:21I agree.
- 19:22I think I.
- 19:23I've already had this season with my childhood friends and I like even throw myself under the bus.
- 19:30And so when I was in elementary school, I met my friends that I'm friends with now, currently, when I was in middle school, I wanted to be something that I wasn't, I don't even know what that was.
- 19:41I wanted to be cool.
- 19:42I wanted to be like on the varsity soccer team.
- 19:45I wanted to be friends with people who did not wanna be friends with me, and the girls that were always nice to me that were.
- 19:51Never nasty to me or who I'm friends with now.
- 19:54Mm-hmm.
- 19:54And I feel like they allowed me to like try new things.
- 19:58Like when I went to a different high school and they made new friends in high school, but they always allowed me back in.
- 20:03It's not like they shut the door to me.
- 20:04Right.
- 20:05And then same thing with college.
- 20:06We went off to college.
- 20:07Everybody, all of us made new friends in college.
- 20:10We all visited each other in college, but it wasn't like the same because we all had our own little.
- 20:16College friend crew, but when we came back home, it was us again, and then I became a mom first, and so I made all these new mom friends or these friends from town.
- 20:26Yeah, different life when now that I feel like I, my seasons are more stable, who I tend to gravitate back to or the.
- 20:35These friends that I have always allowed me to grow.
- 20:38They are, and I may, that's the perfect word, share.
- 20:41I may not share face to face time with them as often because they don't live in my town.
- 20:46We don't have children the exact same age.
- 20:48Our lives are not woven into each other, but I.
- 20:51Think that is the healthiest type of friend I do too.
- 20:54One from a little bit of afar where you could catch up with reminisce with laugh and share new current experiences with For sure.
- 21:04I completely agree with that.
- 21:05The girls, especially my childhood friends, I feel the exact same way.
- 21:09We've allowed each other.
- 21:11Space to go and have our own lives, but then when we reconnect the few times a year, we are very diligent about making sure we do get the quality time together.
- 21:20It's no time has passed, and I feel like it will be that way forever because we've always been like that.
- 21:26We've always allowed each other to go out, have other friend groups, and then come back.
- 21:32It's that secure.
- 21:34That like attachment, right?
- 21:35Mm-hmm.
- 21:36It's okay.
- 21:36You know that they're home for you.
- 21:38Right?
- 21:38And you'll come back and I think that what's happening to me is I am, I think that as I am in this season, I'm realizing that if I'm not getting that space and that allowance, to me it's a very big red flag.
- 21:52So let's then talk about some of the red flag relationships.
- 21:57Mm-hmm.
- 21:57Groups are.
- 21:59Tricky because when you leave someplace feeling worse about yourself, I think that is my biggest sign of a red flag, and that doesn't always necessarily mean that it's the other people in the group.
- 22:11It might just be more a me thing, like I'm not good for that group if you don't feel seen or heard or that you're not good enough.
- 22:20Also, it's normal as women when we get together in groups, there's gossip and sometimes.
- 22:27Gossip can leave you not feeling a group.
- 22:29Great.
- 22:30And that can be another sign.
- 22:31If you notice that the group thrives on exclusion or competition and who's invited and who's not, and who's who, and who's what, and who wore it better, that could be a sign.
- 22:42Lastly, and most importantly for me, is this group performative?
- 22:48Is it just about the look like the social media, the status?
- 22:52The Instagram post, is that what's more important than the actual connection?
- 22:58The people within the group.
- 22:59So for me, those are some of like my personal red flags for a group.
- 23:04Oh, groups are tough because I think, like you had said at the beginning, I think that groups can't, I have a few different groups and some of them are different sizes.
- 23:15I think the size of the group also matters for sure.
- 23:18Groups can be very tricky because I think that like dynamic wise, it.
- 23:23You need a balance of, I think that's why sometimes groups can get a little awkward, right?
- 23:28It's like you need a balance of personalities for a group to work.
- 23:33We have an intruder, what's up?
- 23:36We usually have one of the girls, but this time it was one of the boys.
- 23:40There's also just many more personalities to like work in between, and I don't know, correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the smaller and the more intimate the group is, usually I feel like that's.
- 23:54But it's less likely that things break off and there's like separate groups within the group.
- 23:59You know what I mean?
- 24:00Right.
- 24:00So I think when there's a bigger group, then sometimes little groups form off of the bigger group.
- 24:06Well, I feel like my temperature check for.
- 24:08If a group is just a group fun thing, or if a group is like five or six girls that I actually really care deeply.
- 24:16Mm-hmm.
- 24:16As if I have sidebar conversations with each girl one on one when we're not doing the big group thing.
- 24:23And if I don't, then I know that this is like a social group thing.
- 24:28Mm-hmm.
- 24:28And if I'm not invited to that social group thing, then I'm okay with it.
- 24:33And that's how I measure the group thing versus the one-on-one thing.
- 24:37I love that.
- 24:38So I actually think that we should dissect when you're not invited to something, because I think that this is something that every person listening to this, and probably every person that we ever have met in our lives has felt that sting before.
- 24:53Yes, of course.
- 24:55I want to try to start thinking this way because I think the way that I was taught when I was younger, and I know we talked on this about our girl on girl.
- 25:04Mm-hmm.
- 25:05Just my mom trying to console me like you didn't get invited to the sleepover because they were only allowed to have 10 people there that was healthy or May, and then maybe they would see me be heard again and they were like, oh, F those girls, those aren't even your friends.
- 25:19And then every time it gets a little bit meaner and meaner, so.
- 25:24Something that I'm trying to do now, when I don't get invited to something, I try to think like, why?
- 25:31Why am I bothered by this?
- 25:33Am I bothered because I'm very close to the host and she has left me out maybe on purpose or accidentally, or am I close to the.
- 25:44Invitees and that's why I feel left out because my friends are going to something and I'm not included in that.
- 25:51Do you feel like it's a little easier to swallow one or the other if you're not invited?
- 25:56I think it sucks no matter what I think.
- 25:58You cannot sit here and tell me that it doesn't sting.
- 26:03Of course it stinks to be left out.
- 26:04It always st.
- 26:05Stinks to be left out.
- 26:06It always stinks to be left out, but I think the way I think of being left out of something is if my friends.
- 26:12Are invited to something and maybe I'm not close to the person who invited them.
- 26:18I think that's an easier pill to swallow because I can look at that and say, I'm not friendly with the host enough.
- 26:24So that would make sense that I'm not invited to that.
- 26:26Sure.
- 26:27No, I agree.
- 26:27I think that if you are friends with the host or if you think you're friends with the host and then you're not invited to something.
- 26:35That stings more to me, right?
- 26:37Like I think that's where I'm like, how did I get left out of that?
- 26:40I also think that's a very reasonable, completely valid thing to feel.
- 26:46Sure.
- 26:46I think that saying.
- 26:48Oh, don't let that bother you or I, I think that, yes, there's certain situations, like you're saying at the beginning of this segment where, yes, if there's a size of something, you're say, oh, I could only invite so many people.
- 26:58There's only so many spots available for something.
- 27:02Again, that's something easier to swallow than if it's just a party and it's, the invites are endless and somehow you weren't on the guest list.
- 27:12Like that's a painful thing.
- 27:14I think that if it's a.
- 27:15Pattern.
- 27:17It's an also an okay thing to flag that and then revisit that and say, why?
- 27:23Why is this a pattern?
- 27:24What is going on?
- 27:25I don't think it's a necessarily like a bad thing to just have your antennas on that way and be like, what is going on here?
- 27:33I need to get to the bottom of this because it, I don't think that anybody should be in that shitty feeling.
- 27:39Or do you feel like.
- 27:40You don't always have to get to the bottom of it.
- 27:42I don't know if invites are as linear as that.
- 27:45Maybe you lower your expectations then Yes.
- 27:48Where you have to, maybe you don't have to get to the bottom of it, like you don't have to make it a thing with that person, but I need to know where I stand with somebody.
- 27:55So if I'm constantly getting left out by the same person or the same people, then I'm gonna take that as okay, so I know where I stand with you.
- 28:05That's okay.
- 28:06If it's not worth making a thing, if it's, obviously, if it's somebody that you were close with and you're hurt by it, I think you do make it a thing.
- 28:14It's just so that you can place that person and so maybe you can lower your expectations moving forward.
- 28:19Like we're not that close or they clearly have a problem with me, so I'm gonna step back.
- 28:24That's okay too.
- 28:25And that's okay too.
- 28:26So I guess something that.
- 28:29You, I don't think I wanna do in a situation like that is bring it up to other people.
- 28:35I didn't get invited.
- 28:36Mm-hmm.
- 28:36I wasn't included.
- 28:37I don't wanna be like Complainy or Graspy or draw attention to that because I feel like that Why?
- 28:44Why not?
- 28:44Because I just feel like that sort of sounds annoying.
- 28:48I think that if my first instinct is to bring it up with a friend that was invited to the party and not the host.
- 28:56I think that I probably shouldn't have been invited to the party to begin with.
- 28:59That's, yes, I do agree with that, and I think that's a good gut check.
- 29:02And then I think the best thing to do next is absolutely nothing.
- 29:06Don't bring it up to anybody and just be cordial and just know your place going forward.
- 29:11But what if you're really, what if the person is a good friend of yours that didn't invite, then I think the healthy thing to do is to let the host know.
- 29:20One-on-one.
- 29:20If you're close enough with the host mm-hmm.
- 29:22Then you should be close enough to know, or to be able to say to them like, what happened?
- 29:25Hey, you're having this thing.
- 29:27Like, I love you.
- 29:28I would've loved to have been there.
- 29:29What?
- 29:30Why?
- 29:30Right.
- 29:30And if you're close enough to them, they'll tell you why.
- 29:33And if you did, so if I did something shitty, hopefully they would tell me.
- 29:37Or if it's, I'm sorry, or this is a this group or whatever, you can get the truth.
- 29:41But I think making it a thing is when you.
- 29:45Or then give the silent treatment, pull away or nasty.
- 29:49All the things think like a very healthy.
- 29:52Viewpoint on that is we could look at me and you.
- 29:54Mm-hmm.
- 29:55Like you have, you were my first friend that I met moving into the town that we currently live in.
- 30:01So you introduced me to a lot of people, but I don't necessarily look at you and think that I have to be doing every single thing that you're doing.
- 30:10Yeah.
- 30:10Because you're not a psychopath.
- 30:11Because, but I do think that, and people that are like that, yeah, I, but I need that need to a real, need some space.
- 30:18I think that's a real thing.
- 30:19Yeah.
- 30:19I don't do well with that.
- 30:20I know you don't do well with that push.
- 30:22I don't do well with that either.
- 30:22Oh my God.
- 30:23I put up my arms and I push away.
- 30:25I don't like to be suffocated, but I think that's something that, yeah, I agree.
- 30:30I think that's something that, I don't think that quality is something that you mature out of.
- 30:36I think that quality is usually something that you have or you don't have.
- 30:40It's that ability to like not latch or to latch onto people.
- 30:45I feel, again, that's like a tricky subject that to me is just not something that I do well with.
- 30:51Yeah.
- 30:51I ha I feel like I at least know my place.
- 30:55So if you are going to do something with other friends that I know, I don't expect an invitation to that.
- 31:02I would never look at that and say, how could you go and do something with so and so without me?
- 31:08Oh yeah, I, that would be weird.
- 31:10It would, but I feel like that's a real thing, but that, that's a conflict that occurs here.
- 31:14That's a conflict.
- 31:14That happens.
- 31:15That occurs a lot, I feel like because, and that's to the point of you what you were saying before, which is somebody might bring something up to you, Hey, why wasn't I invited to this?
- 31:24Some of it might be valid, and then some of it might be very invalid.
- 31:28Some of it might be just latching on and looking for drama.
- 31:32Yeah, we're all guilty of it.
- 31:34Yeah.
- 31:34I think at one point in our lives, mm-hmm.
- 31:35Drama doesn't always need to be like such a negative word.
- 31:38Like women are always mixed up with the words drama and feelings and this and that, but it's just rooted in our relationships.
- 31:45Like we deeply care for our friends.
- 31:47We have these lives that are like.
- 31:49Full of things and experiences and we connect over sharing our experiences.
- 31:53Mm-hmm.
- 31:53You wanna call that drama?
- 31:55We'll then call it drama.
- 31:56No, but it's not always bad.
- 31:58No.
- 31:59I think that it's just like that passion.
- 32:00I think that, again, I, some of the growth that I have done since becoming a mom is become a way more sensitive person.
- 32:08It's confusing because I've become more sensitive, but then I've also, my bullshit tolerance is so low, low.
- 32:15My is so low.
- 32:16Always.
- 32:16Do you think so?
- 32:17It's a weird mix.
- 32:17Do you always, do you think you were always sensitive though?
- 32:20I think I was always sensitive about certain things, but I think that I could let a lot roll off me a lot.
- 32:26Mm-hmm.
- 32:27Faster.
- 32:28I'm sensitive now, but then I'm also insensitive now.
- 32:33It's a weird, it's a very weird combination and I can only blame motherhood for that because I do think motherhood is just a very complicated.
- 32:43Transition period of your life where you've gone through so much.
- 32:46We keep saying that the closest thing to it is adolescence, is going back to adolescence.
- 32:52So I know we talked a lot about like older friendships or maybe friendships that we've had throughout other seasons of our life, but.
- 32:59Another topic that people ask about a lot from us is building new friendships.
- 33:05We did talk about the ways you can go about building new friendships.
- 33:09Mm-hmm.
- 33:09Done such a phenomenal job of that.
- 33:10I've just tagged along and met a lot of your friends, but I guess in the next season as you are meeting new people.
- 33:18How do you feel about that?
- 33:20Or do you look for certain things?
- 33:23So I think as we enter our forties, we have our kids, we have our husbands time is limited.
- 33:30We have our work.
- 33:32And cultivating and maintaining those friendships can be hard.
- 33:36So.
- 33:37I think there's two pillars here.
- 33:39The maintenance, like how do I maintain, and I shared earlier, sometimes I maintain now by phone calls on my walks or check-ins.
- 33:46Or check-ins.
- 33:46Mm-hmm.
- 33:46Because I can't physically see my friends, so I do the check-ins, but I think that.
- 33:53Doing things that are bigger than you are.
- 33:56How I like to make friends and I think like for you, you talk about your college days'cause you were on this dance team and you have these really special friends.
- 34:06'cause you had these shared things and I think.
- 34:09At any age, you can become part of some type of group that's bigger than you, whether that's through philanthropy, right?
- 34:15And doing fundraising, that's something that's bigger than you.
- 34:18Whether that's the tennis team that I play on, that's something that's bigger than me.
- 34:21That's like a shared experience, whether that's like a.
- 34:24A workout class that I like to go to.
- 34:26It's like taking the fundamentals back and you're saying, what?
- 34:29How did you meet people in earlier in life?
- 34:33And you're trying to emulate that in some way because I do think that friendships form in some of the best ways.
- 34:40Yes.
- 34:41By doing that, that you said that.
- 34:42Yeah.
- 34:42Like perfectly.
- 34:43I think so.
- 34:44Even don't you feel like this podcast has brought us so close, so much closer.
- 34:49Yeah.
- 34:49We are such special friends.
- 34:51This is something special that we have together.
- 34:53We do something.
- 34:54I loved that phrase of beyond you.
- 34:56I think that it pulls you back and it really can create such an amazing friendship.
- 35:01So I think that goes back to one of our, I think it was our first episode, which was Finding Your Flock.
- 35:06That was one of your tips, and I think that's such a huge takeaway is.
- 35:10Don't look past the simplicity of that.
- 35:13Find something that you like to do.
- 35:15Volunteer somewhere.
- 35:16I do think that's like such an easy way, but are there like certain.
- 35:20Things that you look for in friendships.
- 35:23So I don't know if I look for this, but if I look at my friends, what I am drawn to, and this is purely accidental because I don't, I was like thinking about who my close friends are, like who I talk to, who, like honestly, if I open up my phone right now mm-hmm.
- 35:38I look at my call log, who is on my call log.
- 35:42My friends are type A, very hardworking, incredibly driven.
- 35:48Usually married with four kids.
- 35:50Like multiple kids.
- 35:51Yep.
- 35:51Lots of kids.
- 35:52Lot hands in, like lots of different pots.
- 35:56At their core good humans.
- 35:58Mm-hmm.
- 35:58And that is what I am currently attracted to.
- 36:02Yeah, I like that too.
- 36:03And I also think that when people possess qualities like that, they don't put so much light on me.
- 36:10Right.
- 36:10Because they have so many other things that they are.
- 36:14Into, you've said that, but that you don't like to be the center and you don't like to be the only thing connecting, like you need a little bit of breathing room in your friendships, and so you don't like the latching and you don't like the.
- 36:27You don't like to be the center of that friend?
- 36:29Well, I, I don't know what to do with it.
- 36:31It's too much.
- 36:31I don't know how, I don't know how to play that role when, and I know I've latched in certain friendships because I needed help.
- 36:39I needed guidance.
- 36:40When Joseph was entering elementary school, I remember latching and being like, I don't know what to do.
- 36:44And I'm sure that was probably very annoying for that friend that had to play that role.
- 36:48I think we all latch accidentally, right?
- 36:52Intentionally.
- 36:53I'm not sure.
- 36:55Being latched like time is just not my vibe, right?
- 36:59'cause I don't know how to play that role.
- 37:00That's, I think that that's very interesting.
- 37:02I am, what about you tell me I'm very similar.
- 37:04Me, I think if you had asked me five years ago what I was looking for, or what types of qualities I was drawn to, I'm sure that they would be semi similar, but probably different in a lot of ways, I think, right?
- 37:16A little softer.
- 37:16I think right now what I value most is ease and.
- 37:22Loyalty and warmth, and I don't ever want to feel like I'm being spoken about badly behind.
- 37:32Closed doors.
- 37:33I don't like that feeling.
- 37:35I have absolutely no tolerance for it right now.
- 37:38So if I'm getting that vibe, I'm pulling back immediately.
- 37:42I've been like really needing like friends with a sense of humor.
- 37:45A little bit of like humor.
- 37:46Lightheartedness.
- 37:47Have humor.
- 37:47You have lightheartedness.
- 37:48Thank you.
- 37:49That's why I love you so much.
- 37:50I feel like we're always laughing.
- 37:52I really am drawn to people that are very kind without being competitive.
- 37:57That is like my, I think star asterisk, like.
- 38:01Kind without being competitive, and also who show up when it matters.
- 38:08And I don't only mean that in a one-sided thing, but I mean that in a good thing too.
- 38:13Mm-hmm.
- 38:13Like I think that where things have really shown for me over the last probably 15 ish years since I've had different businesses that are very public facing.
- 38:25The people who support you when you're putting yourself out there and not the ghosts, the people who don't support from afar.
- 38:34I think that I will cheer somebody on very publicly and I want the same.
- 38:42Back for me.
- 38:43Okay.
- 38:44Do you think that people are afraid to do that out in the pub?
- 38:48Like you're used to being out in the public, right?
- 38:50Yeah.
- 38:51Not everybody is right.
- 38:52I'm just playing devil's advocate.
- 38:54Do you think that, but I don't think that it needs to be a public thing, so maybe I should correct myself.
- 38:59Okay.
- 38:59It doesn't need to be a public thing, but just cheer you on, Hey, you're doing this publicly, and I don't, and I just mean that's a blanket statement of just.
- 39:07Supporting support.
- 39:08Okay.
- 39:08And just being, and I say the phrase like, be a cheerleader for your friends, because that's what I think that you need at this point in life, right?
- 39:17Yeah.
- 39:17Is life is really hard and.
- 39:19There's just so much that goes into it.
- 39:21It's so complicated.
- 39:22And I think that when you have a friends around you that just, you know that you can be yourself around and that they're just like proud to be friends with you, but not in a way that serves them.
- 39:34So you're looking for that reciprocity?
- 39:36Yes.
- 39:37You're not necessarily two way streets, two way street.
- 39:40Sometimes when I think of like reciprocity, I think of it in this negative way like I do for you and you do for me.
- 39:45And that reminds me of when I got married and like the Italian lisp where you had to keep track of who gave how much money to you and who came and oh, we don't give a yes penny more.
- 39:55I don't think of it that way.
- 39:56It's just collectively as a group of friends.
- 39:59You give?
- 39:59I give happily with ease.
- 40:01Yeah.
- 40:01And I, and support.
- 40:02I think that the, yes, I think the word is just being supportive.
- 40:07And that could be public facing.
- 40:09That could just be not public facing, but just that you know that someone has your back.
- 40:14Right.
- 40:14And will cheer you on, but will also hear you complain and hear your positive stories.
- 40:20We talked about that too.
- 40:21It's so important that you have friendships that.
- 40:25We will listen to you complain, but we'll also listen to your wins.
- 40:29I think that is like yeah, the most important thing.
- 40:32Not just when the chips are down.
- 40:33Yes.
- 40:34I think it's so easy to bond over bad things.
- 40:38Mm-hmm.
- 40:38And negativity and things like that, but, and it's harder to bond over positivity and.
- 40:45Cheering people on because competition gets in the way feeling less than gets in the way.
- 40:51There's just so many emotions that can get in the way.
- 40:53So when you just have a friendship that's not rooted in any of that bullshit mm-hmm.
- 40:58It's imperative right now in this chapter of life.
- 41:02So.
- 41:03There's these three pillars that I was talking about before.
- 41:07From the book.
- 41:08From the book, and she calls them these three affinities, and the first one is symmetry.
- 41:14And so when she talks about symmetry, it's like when I meet you, oh my God.
- 41:17Same.
- 41:18Oh my God.
- 41:18Same.
- 41:19We have all these things in common.
- 41:20This is so great.
- 41:21This is bonding us together.
- 41:23So what that sort of does is it eliminates competition, right?
- 41:27So then what happens when one person is playing more of a superior role that ensues?
- 41:33Maybe there's not that sameness anymore, and that could be really tricky.
- 41:36Right?
- 41:37And then that can be tricky for a friendship.
- 41:38Mm-hmm.
- 41:38Next one that she talks about is support when you are getting support from a friend.
- 41:44If you are in a really hard time in your life, like for me, when I had my twins and people aren't checking on you because you're not asking for help, that could cause a fallout.
- 41:53When I had my twins, I was very vocal that I needed help and my friends came, and that brought me close to them.
- 42:00I think I could have very easily been like, no, I'm good.
- 42:03I'm good.
- 42:03Everybody leave me alone.
- 42:05And then.
- 42:06Drove a wedge there, but instead I allowed myself support and that was like something that she talks about is support.
- 42:12And then the last one that she talks about is secrecy.
- 42:16And when you share things with somebody, you make that person feel special.
- 42:20For sure.
- 42:20I am telling just you this, you are holding onto special information and that bonds you to them.
- 42:25I think that's what we've talked about so many times and it's interesting to hear it as the word secrecy.
- 42:30'cause it's not what I would like.
- 42:32These words sound so ation.
- 42:34They do like symmetry support secrecy.
- 42:36Yes.
- 42:36But when you like open them up, yeah, you break them down and they're, but we've talked about that actually.
- 42:42Opening up and letting people in.
- 42:44Yes.
- 42:45To your thoughts and feelings.
- 42:47Yes.
- 42:47And what power that has.
- 42:49It's an immediate, you've talked about that.
- 42:50It is, and it's something that it can connect you and it can really change your life because I think it also allows.
- 42:57Other people to know how you're feeling, number one, which is obvious, but it also allows people to hold you accountable for things.
- 43:05So if you do wanna make a change, if you need something in some way, if you need support from people, if you're open and you let them into these inner secrets, if you wanna call them, that it, I think it just creates a bond.
- 43:20It.
- 43:20I agree.
- 43:21So what do you do then, if you're not somebody who.
- 43:25Is really good at hooking people.
- 43:27I think that motherhood has changed me so much where I wasn't a very vocal person.
- 43:31If you even think about the things that I'm sitting in this chair talking about, I wouldn't have done that unless I entered this chapter and went through the things that I went.
- 43:40So how did you become somebody who then now does speak up?
- 43:44Because what it did was maybe it was a means to an end for you when you became a mom, but what it also has done now is.
- 43:52Connected you with other women and other people, and you're growing these bo, you're creating these bonds over you speaking up.
- 43:59I think that so much of it is other things that we've talked about before, which is sometimes there's a pivotal moment, right?
- 44:06That happens in your life where you're like, Ugh, like one thing will rock you.
- 44:09And it's just, I need to change from this.
- 44:12And sometimes it's a gradual shift over time.
- 44:15I think for me it seems like it was a.
- 44:18Pivotal moment, but it was really a very gradual shift over time, and it just came to a head where I cannot live in this sheltered, not sharing type of space anymore.
- 44:31I needed to open up to get myself healthy and to the next level.
- 44:36Like I needed to let people in a little bit more.
- 44:39I needed that support so the walls had to come down.
- 44:43And so I think that's just, it was like an evolution of that.
- 44:46It wasn't something that just instantly happened.
- 44:48I'm sure for some people and some experiences, one thing will happen that just rocks them and then they shift from that point.
- 44:55But I think either way, when you get to that point, so you let your walls down Yeah.
- 45:01And looked for support.
- 45:03Yeah.
- 45:03And then, and by doing so, it almost started giving, you almost started supporting people more for sure, because you let the walls down, let people in.
- 45:12And then by that you were exchanging for sure and doing back for others.
- 45:16For sure.
- 45:16And I think that's.
- 45:17Created bonds and friendships that came out of nowhere.
- 45:20And that's why I think for a long time I wore the age of the friendship as so strong.
- 45:29So I've said this, the 20 year friendships, it's like a badge of honor.
- 45:33I have these 20 year friendships.
- 45:35We've gone through so many things together, and I'm not saying that those aren't valuable anymore.
- 45:41I'm saying that.
- 45:42Yes, I have those, but I've also been able to develop friendships that came on quickly from shared experiences because I'm in a different place of my life now, where now I'm being very open, I'm being very vulnerable, and friendships have come in and are just as strong.
- 45:58That's like a good thing, and I think that's a very positive message.
- 46:01And if anybody's feeling.
- 46:03A certain way because female friendships can be tricky and when you're in different chapters of your life, it can be tricky and you, it can feel very isolating and I don't think that you have to sit there and worry that you don't have length of time.
- 46:16I haven't known this person for very long.
- 46:18If you're in a shared experience and you're vulnerable and you're open with people, you would be so amazed at how fast real bonds can form.
- 46:29I completely agree.
- 46:30So.
- 46:32We wanna talk a little bit about sisters.
- 46:34Yes.
- 46:35Because this, this is where we differ.
- 46:36This is where we differ.
- 46:37This is where we differ.
- 46:38This is where we differ.
- 46:39So I have two sisters.
- 46:41Mm-hmm.
- 46:41Just sisters.
- 46:42You're one of three.
- 46:43I am one of three.
- 46:44Mm-hmm.
- 46:44Just have sisters and I just have a brother, a younger brother.
- 46:47Sisters teach you a lot.
- 46:48Yes.
- 46:49And sisters teach you how to fight.
- 46:52Teach sisters teach you how.
- 46:55To have true, healthy competition because it's only healthy.
- 46:59You're not competing over, at least in my sister experience, we never were competing over at boyfriends or who was prettier or who was this, or who had the better outfits.
- 47:08None of that mattered.
- 47:09My clothes didn't belong to me.
- 47:11They belonged to the three of us.
- 47:12It was the group.
- 47:13Yeah.
- 47:13There was, everything was communal, everything was a, everything was communal.
- 47:16Everything was a group.
- 47:17We were the Anderson sisters.
- 47:18Nobody was pitted against each other.
- 47:20That was my like upbringing with sisters and so.
- 47:25When you go back to this list, the symmetry, like same for the most part, like right, same.
- 47:30I was the oldest, Nicole was the middle, Marissa was the youngest.
- 47:32So there was some differentiation there, but we were still all the same.
- 47:37We all had this, we all came from the same house.
- 47:40We all had the same amount of money given to us.
- 47:42We all, everything.
- 47:43Yeah.
- 47:43Same experiences was equal.
- 47:44Same experiences.
- 47:46Support, everybody supported each other.
- 47:48Everybody showed up for each other's games.
- 47:51Everybody now watches each other's kids.
- 47:53There's equal support and secrecy.
- 47:56Oh my God.
- 47:56Yeah.
- 47:57We all talk shit about each other.
- 47:58There's two against one, one against two, but then everybody makes up.
- 48:02But that's interesting.
- 48:03So because I'm not from that world and I am curious to know if other people would agree with me, because I know other people would agree with you.
- 48:10I feel like you, I'm, I'm a head.
- 48:11Head.
- 48:12I feel like you can tell when people are from like a.
- 48:15Sister dynamic because I think that they're different with their friends.
- 48:19And I also think that people, oh my God.
- 48:21I know.
- 48:21I know.
- 48:21So don't bad.
- 48:21It's like if you grow up with sisters and you're, you just said you fight and then you make up and there's just, it's just kind.
- 48:29Sometimes you don't even make up fight.
- 48:30Fight.
- 48:30Sometimes you even, it's just that you blow up and then just go on about your day.
- 48:35Yeah.
- 48:35But when you don't grow up in that world, to me.
- 48:38That's very foreign.
- 48:40That's so I'm somebody who, I don't roll like that.
- 48:44I can, but it's not in my nature because I didn't grow up with that sort of same experience.
- 48:51So when I have friends that have sisters.
- 48:54It's a very different, I think our probably, what's the word?
- 48:58Like our, the weight, our conflict resolution is very different.
- 49:02Like I, I need the discussion.
- 49:04I need a little something extra.
- 49:07I can't just have someone blow up at me or act, complete a hole and then turn around and then be like.
- 49:13What happened?
- 49:13Everything's fine.
- 49:14It's, no, it's not fine for me.
- 49:16And it's because I didn't grow up with that.
- 49:18I didn't.
- 49:18I grew up with probably a much more, probably formal conflict resolution than I feel like sisters just let things roll off.
- 49:26They're just like, whatever.
- 49:27And then you move on, right?
- 49:28And it's just very different.
- 49:30So I think that's very.
- 49:31Interesting and also very funny'cause I think that's like a different Yeah.
- 49:35Experience for sure.
- 49:36It is a much different experience.
- 49:38Much, and I'm not saying that this is healthy the way that we communicate up.
- 49:43No, but it's just different.
- 49:44And you would probably look at somebody like me saying, I need the conflict resolution.
- 49:50We need to talk about these things.
- 49:51And you'd probably be like, whatever.
- 49:52I'm past it.
- 49:53It's over.
- 49:54Like it's done.
- 49:56But if you look at that and then you look at like groups of friends, like some are gonna handle things like you, some need the extra, alright, can we just not really make this a thing, but can we just finish this off?
- 50:08Finish it off.
- 50:08That's what it is.
- 50:09And then we also have somebody like me that I'm like.
- 50:12What are we even talking about?
- 50:14And you're like, you just yelled at me like I did.
- 50:17Did I just do that?
- 50:18And now that it's like being brought to my attention how I am very confrontational and I think it, I say it, I scream it.
- 50:26I'm, oh, this has happened to you and shit.
- 50:28Yes.
- 50:29Has happened to you to not do this.
- 50:30Yeah.
- 50:30I need to keep my cool.
- 50:32But it was just always how I communicated with my sisters.
- 50:36Right?
- 50:36Like, you took my car, I'm gonna take your car, like whatever.
- 50:39Then that was just carried over into Right.
- 50:42Its a current day is it is very funny.
- 50:44I think that's a very funny dynamic and I think that it's something that you just have to be like sensitive, if that's the word, or just understand if someone didn't grow up that way, like I understand that sisters would have a very different dynamic than how I had a dynamic with a sibling because they're just, and I'm sure that there are some siblings where it just didn't matter where it's like, it could be like a boy and a girl having a similar situation.
- 51:07I also think that there's just something to be said about.
- 51:10Multiple females.
- 51:11It's just different.
- 51:12It's different.
- 51:12I feel, feel like even with my two, it's gonna be a very different situation than different than it is if there was multiple girls.
- 51:18I know I have two sisters and I have a sister-in-law very close with all three of'em.
- 51:22I'm just as close with Gina now as I am with my two sisters, who I'm very close too.
- 51:25And Gina is so funny'cause she grew up with a brother.
- 51:28With a brother.
- 51:29So similar to you guys.
- 51:30So Gina, when I first met her, or even not even first met her, but even now I'm like.
- 51:34You don't know how to share, do you?
- 51:36And she's No, I never knew how to share.
- 51:38Now sharing is something you're supposed to teach your 2-year-old, when they go to the library, oh, your turn, my turn.
- 51:43She never learned how to share because she didn't have, it's, it's different, right?
- 51:47You don't have never had to share anything.
- 51:49We would, my brother and I would, obviously we grew up sharing toys and stuff, but when you, but then when you get to an age, you're not sharing.
- 51:56Clothes.
- 51:57You're not really sharing makeup and sh sharing that sort of, it's different, but even sharing time shared a space.
- 52:02Right.
- 52:02She even didn't have to learn how to share time because it was like, girl goes with mom, boy goes with dad.
- 52:08Like when we were growing up, like all three of us had to share our time with our mom.
- 52:12All three of us had to fight for time with our dad.
- 52:14Like I know we had, I had to learn how to share.
- 52:17Everything.
- 52:19Time, cars, money, everything.
- 52:21That could be a whole podcast episode, because I think that's just fascinating.
- 52:25I, I know, but I think that is just a fascinating topic of the dynamics between siblings and how different that can be.
- 52:33And it's something that you don't wanna admit that you don't wanna admit that it's different, but it is, it's, it's, and now you share friends, then what happens when you have to share friends?
- 52:42I know, right?
- 52:43Like that.
- 52:44It's a little tricky too.
- 52:45Sharing friends, right.
- 52:46Yep.
- 52:46That's so interesting.
- 52:47Has that ever happened to you where you have a friend and you feel like now you have to share the friend and you're like, Ugh, this is annoying.
- 52:54No, I don't.
- 52:55I, no, because I don't think that's, I don't latch like that.
- 52:59Yeah.
- 52:59I don't mind sharing friends in that way, but I am.
- 53:04I can relate to what you said about Gina because I'm somebody who probably, I've had to, like, if somebody was going in, I remember poor Gina, she doesn't even listen to this podcast.
- 53:13I know it's poor G, but it's okay.
- 53:16But I remember even being in college, right?
- 53:18And like I had.
- 53:20Friends with sisters, everybody that I lived with in college all had sisters, and I remember them like raiding my clothes, right?
- 53:27And I was like, whoa, what a minute.
- 53:28Wait a minute is happening.
- 53:29Minute.
- 53:30What's going on here?
- 53:30It was just second nature to them because they all grew up with sister.
- 53:34I'm literally just doing like a mental note of, I didn't think I realized this until you said it, but then I was like.
- 53:39Walls up.
- 53:40Wait a minute.
- 53:40No, like that.
- 53:41That's not how I roll.
- 53:42I don't know.
- 53:43I became fine with it, but it wasn't like something that I was So you did become fine with it?
- 53:47Yeah, because it's just like that's a hard, that's a hard thing to transition.
- 53:50It's, I became fine with it.
- 53:51I don't love it, but I still feel, and it's funny, I know even growing up or now even having Layla and I'm like, this girl, she goes for all my stuff.
- 54:01Like already she's one and a half.
- 54:03She goes.
- 54:04Four.
- 54:04She'll go in my closet and take out my shoes, or she'll go in my suitcase and start going through stuff.
- 54:09Oh, she's so cute.
- 54:09And I find myself like, oh my God.
- 54:12Like I know.
- 54:13And I'm like, oh, she is gonna be like 16 in my closet taking all my things and I'm just gonna have to roll with it.
- 54:20Oh, she's so cute.
- 54:21I just found a picture of Ava when she was 18 months old and she had.
- 54:26Because I always am wearing bracelets.
- 54:27Mm-hmm.
- 54:28And she was wearing mag, she was wearing magnet tiles.
- 54:30Like the magnet tiles that they play with.
- 54:32Yep.
- 54:33They were like in the shape of squares, and she was wearing a stack of magnet tiles, make bracelets on her arm to look like they were bracelets.
- 54:39It's so cute.
- 54:40It's really good.
- 54:41Cute.
- 54:41I love it.
- 54:41Cute.
- 54:41Oh my goodness.
- 54:43Those girls.
- 54:44All right.
- 54:45I feel like we could keep going and going with this because this, I feel like we keep saying friendships, especially female friendships are so layered and there's so much going into it.
- 54:55I feel like we have other topics that we can definitely expand on.
- 54:59If you guys have anything specific that you wanna talk about mm-hmm.
- 55:02Please let us know.
- 55:03You can send us a text and we can dive into a little bit more of female friendships.
- 55:07'cause we haven't done a ton of female friendship discussion.
- 55:10No, and I really feel like.
- 55:12We're just scratching the surface here.
- 55:14Ultimately, when I think about my female friendships, I wanna create experiences without guilt attached to it.
- 55:23I don't wanna feel bad about my experiences that I have with people that I love.
- 55:28Mm-hmm.
- 55:28Because ultimately, that's who my friends are, people that I love to share time and space with.
- 55:33Yeah.
- 55:34I love that.
- 55:36We'll wrap up even though we could keep going.
- 55:39Mm-hmm.
- 55:39Probably four more hours.
- 55:41But we're gonna close out with our ending segment, which is our pink spotlight, our person, place thing, tip, mantra.
- 55:49Mm-hmm.
- 55:49I think that's making life a little bit better this week.
- 55:52I'll share mine.
- 55:52Okay.
- 55:53Because I, it's a little bit of a practice that I've been doing.
- 55:57Oh.
- 55:57And getting back into something that I used to do all the time.
- 56:00And that's reading and.
- 56:02I can't sit there and say that I've gone through a ton of different books because I really haven't, I have a very small window of time to read, but I've been trying to read instead of scroll at night.
- 56:13Okay, so you're replacing, okay.
- 56:14I'm replacing It has made a huge difference in just the relaxation I feel before I go to sleep.
- 56:21It's insane for, and I really, I only have.
- 56:25The mental stamina to stay up for maybe 15 minutes.
- 56:28It's not like I'm sitting there reading for hours, but it's just making such a difference and it's been really nice to get back into books.
- 56:34How many books have I read this summer?
- 56:36Only two.
- 56:37It's not like I've been crazy.
- 56:38So what's on your, what's on your nights stand right now?
- 56:40I'm reading the third summer I turned Pretty book Be and I'm, and I'm watching also at this.
- 56:45So it's going pretty well because another episode, only have another episode.
- 56:48Comes out today, right?
- 56:49Yeah, there's a new episode and I've just been like.
- 56:52Reading enough to like almost catch myself up to the series.
- 56:56It's like working perfectly.
- 56:57And I didn't plan it to be Did they follow along?
- 56:59Yes, and they follow along really well.
- 57:01So it's been interesting to read and then see the show or like vice.
- 57:06Duh Conrad all day.
- 57:08If you're gonna sit there and tell me anything other than that, get out of here.
- 57:13So I've been wa'cause last night I turned it on'cause I thought it was coming on Tuesday.
- 57:16Yeah, it's Wednesday, but I guess it drops on Wednesday.
- 57:18And I was like, oh, what am I gonna watch tonight?
- 57:20So I just went back and started watching from the beginning.
- 57:23Yeah.
- 57:23Isn't this so good?
- 57:24So good.
- 57:25I know.
- 57:25They always, it's like such a joke and I feel like my reels and.
- 57:29TikTok feed are, everything is.
- 57:30It's just that.
- 57:31It's just everything is that right now, but it's so nostalgic and.
- 57:36The book was actually written when we were like young.
- 57:40Not no wonder we like it so much.
- 57:41Yeah.
- 57:41Like I feel like it has that relate to the time feeling.
- 57:44Yeah.
- 57:44It's supposed to be like, I don't know if it's when we were in high school or college.
- 57:47It's around that time.
- 57:49So it's, I think that there's something to be said about why all of the millennials are like, so.
- 57:54Invested in this story.
- 57:55It just feels very realistic.
- 57:57Yeah.
- 57:58And I love it.
- 57:59But are you anything other than Team Conrad?
- 58:01Is there another answer?
- 58:03No, no.
- 58:03Team Conrad, you know the other show.
- 58:05Tell me Lies.
- 58:06Oh yes, that's another good one.
- 58:07Tell me Lies is that another was in like 2008 that we set back when we were in college.
- 58:12Yes.
- 58:12So I feel like 2007 or 2007, so.
- 58:14All of us millennials remember that douche bag from college that we were like, it's so true.
- 58:20Obsessed.
- 58:20I know.
- 58:20It's so true.
- 58:21So I feel like all of these shows, it's also just fun like that so much.
- 58:24But like summer, I turned pretty, doesn't really do a lot of the nostalgic, like they have it set in this time.
- 58:30This time.
- 58:31But yes.
- 58:31Tell me lies.
- 58:32Oh my god.
- 58:32Me and my girlfriends are obsessed with that show too.
- 58:34'cause that's like.
- 58:35If you look, it's like podcast.
- 58:36I could do a whole podcast.
- 58:37You like I had podcast, that outfit I went to that party, I did all those things.
- 58:40The low rise jeans.
- 58:41Oh, so the DIY costumes.
- 58:43Yeah.
- 58:44I was at that Fred house for sure, but I, yes.
- 58:46Getting back into, I digress.
- 58:48Sorry.
- 58:48Getting back into, into reading has been not just watching tv.
- 58:51Yeah.
- 58:51I'm not just watching TV and I'm not just scrolling my phone.
- 58:54It's been really helping.
- 58:55I got myself like a little nightlight too.
- 58:57Like a little bedside one.
- 58:58The ones night clicks on your book.
- 58:59Yeah, because I was like, then I can at least read and I don't have to be like.
- 59:03Bothering my husband, but it's just been really nice.
- 59:06Good for you.
- 59:06And so I'm gonna try to get back into my Kindle.
- 59:09I've been reading like real books.
- 59:10I've had, I have two books that I actually physically had.
- 59:13Mm-hmm.
- 59:13But I'm gonna get back into my Kindle too and like really try to make this a habit because I just feel good for you mentally.
- 59:19It's great.
- 59:20Love it.
- 59:20And if you guys have any love book recommendations, I love, I'm like so behind on the Times.
- 59:23I had just read, what's the one with Blake Lively?
- 59:26That whole drama, it ends with us.
- 59:28That it ends with us.
- 59:29I just got through that.
- 59:30Oh.
- 59:30And I'm like five years late to it, but I, I just haven't been in that space to be able to read.
- 59:34I have a cute view you can take.
- 59:36I like to read.
- 59:36I know.
- 59:37So what is yours this week?
- 59:38Mine's a thing.
- 59:39Okay.
- 59:40And I'm wearing them, I'm doing a show in tall Goodness.
- 59:42I'm obsessed.
- 59:43Oh, fun.
- 59:43I copied my sister-in-law.
- 59:45Where are those from?
- 59:46These are from Amazon.
- 59:47I was gonna say, if they're another target find, you're gonna be, look at how cute these are.
- 59:50All those are adorable.
- 59:51They're like inspired by the Gucci shoes.
- 59:53They look a little Gucci, but they're not though, because G, the Gucci shoes have the gold bar here and the chunky heel.
- 59:59But I like these because they're a sandal.
- 1:00:01You have been on, they only have on fire teensy little heel.
- 1:00:04Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:04So you can wear these like a sandal, but they also can be a heel.
- 1:00:08Can we collectively go back to like never wearing a stiletto again?
- 1:00:12Like I, I literally hope we never like a So Kate?
- 1:00:15Yes.
- 1:00:15I hope.
- 1:00:16Because I'm just loving all of these like small heels.
- 1:00:18Yeah, they're really cute.
- 1:00:19It also makes it so easy to wear pants with them, with you're all having the same length of he or the same height of heel.
- 1:00:27It makes.
- 1:00:28Having a pair of jeans so much easier because then you don't have to worry about Right.
- 1:00:31For one outfit a day.
- 1:00:32Yeah.
- 1:00:32If you have a cute shoe that can be worn every day.
- 1:00:34Yeah.
- 1:00:34You know when you're, oh, I have my jeans that are go with flats and I have my jeans that go with heels.
- 1:00:39Yes.
- 1:00:39And like it's just easy that everything is the same level right now.
- 1:00:42Yeah.
- 1:00:43So these are cute.
- 1:00:43I'll link them because they have so cute.
- 1:00:45Every single color love and I really like them a lot.
- 1:00:48I love that.
- 1:00:48So they were 24 99.
- 1:00:50I love it.
- 1:00:50You have been the queen of finding like good look for Lesses this summer.
- 1:00:54Obsessed.
- 1:00:54These, I copied from Gina.
- 1:00:55I can't take crap.
- 1:00:56I feel like every.
- 1:00:57Thing is inspired by like somebody else.
- 1:00:59I, okay.
- 1:00:59And I'll just tell you who inspired me'cause I didn't, that's the way come up with with it myself.
- 1:01:03Up up.
- 1:01:04That's the way to go.
- 1:01:04Taking bits of pieces.
- 1:01:05I'll give everybody the credit.
- 1:01:07And hopefully that's what everybody's doing.
- 1:01:08Listening in.
- 1:01:09Hopefully you're taking some tips that we're sharing and our pink spotlights and applying them to your daily life too.
- 1:01:15So this week we gave you our take on female friendships and where we're just sitting with them.
- 1:01:21Yep.
- 1:01:22And maybe we'll dive into another topic.
- 1:01:25During another day.
- 1:01:26Yeah.
- 1:01:27And we would, because we didn't really talk about like conflict.
- 1:01:29Yeah.
- 1:01:30Because that's another, maybe we'll talk about conflict with female friendships.
- 1:01:33Yeah.
- 1:01:33And if there's anything else, have friends that don't get along or when you're really just not getting along.
- 1:01:37Wow.
- 1:01:38I know there's so many things we can talk about with female friendships.
