- 0:00Chapter thirteen, The Rescue. The cowardly Lion was much pleased to hear that
- 0:06the Wicked Witch had been melted by a bucket of water, and Dorothy at
- 0:10once unlocked the gate of his prison and set him free. They went in
- 0:14together to the castle, where Dorothy's first act was to call all the winkies
- 0:18together and tell them that they were no longer slaves. There was great rejoicing
- 0:23among the yellow Winkies, for they had been made to work hard during many
- 0:27years for the Wicked Witch, who had always treated them with great cruelty.
- 0:32They kept this day as a holiday then and ever after, and spent the
- 0:37time in feasting and dancing. If our friends, the Scarecrow and the tin
- 0:42Woodman were only with us, said the Lion, I should be quite happy.
- 0:48Don't you suppose we could rescue them, asked the girl anxiously. We
- 0:53can try, answered the lion. So they called the yellow Winkies and asked
- 0:58them if they would help to rescue their friends, And the Winkies said that
- 1:00they would be delighted to do all in their power for Dorothy, who had
- 1:04set them free from bondage. So she chose a number of the Winkies,
- 1:07who looked as if they knew the most, and they all started away.
- 1:11They traveled that day and part of the next, until they came to the
- 1:15rocky plain, where the tin woodman lay, all battered and bent. His
- 1:19axe was near him, but the blade was rusted and the handle broken off
- 1:23short. The Winkies lifted him tenderly in their arms and carried him back to
- 1:27the Yellow Castle again, Dorothy shedding a few tears by the way at the
- 1:33sad plight of her old friend, and the lion, looking sober and sorry.
- 1:38When they reached the castle, Dorothy said to the Winkies, are any
- 1:42of your people tinsmiths? Oh? Yes, some of us are very good
- 1:47ten smiths, they told her. Then bring them to me, she said,
- 1:51And when the tinsmiths came, bringing with them all their tools and baskets,
- 1:55she inquired, can you straighten out those dents in the tin woodman and
- 2:00mend him back into shape again and solder him together where he is broken?
- 2:04The tin smiths looked the woodman over carefully and then answered that they thought they
- 2:08could mend him so he would be as good as ever. So they set
- 2:13to work in one of the big yellow rooms of the castle, and worked
- 2:15for three days and four nights, hammering and twisting and bending and soldering and
- 2:21polishing and pounding at the legs and body and head of the tin woodman,
- 2:24until at last he was straightened out into his old form, and his joints
- 2:30worked as well as ever. To be sure, there were several patches on
- 2:34him, but the tin smiths did a good job, and as the woodman
- 2:37was not a vain man, he did not mind the patches at all.
- 2:43When at last he walked into Dorothy's room and thanked her for rescuing him,
- 2:47he was so pleased that he wept tears of joy, and Dorothy had to
- 2:52wipe every tear carefully from his face with her apron so that his joints would
- 2:57not be rusted. At the same time, her own tears fell thick and
- 3:00fast at the joy of meeting her old friend again, and these tears did
- 3:05not need to be wiped away. As for the lion, he wiped his
- 3:08eyes so often with the tip of his tail that it became quite wet,
- 3:13and he was obliged to go out into the courtyard and hold it in the
- 3:15sun until it dried. If we only had the scarecrow with us. Again,
- 3:21said the Tin Woodman, when Dorothy had finished telling him everything that had
- 3:23happened. I should be quite happy. We must try to find him,
- 3:28said the girl. So she called the Winkies to help her, and they
- 3:32walked all that day and part of the next, until they came to the
- 3:36tall tree in the branches of which the winged monkeys had tossed the scarecrow's clothes.
- 3:40It was a very tall tree, and the trunk was so smooth that
- 3:44no one could climb it. But the woodman said, at once, I'll
- 3:47chop it down, and then we can get the scarecrow's clothes. Now,
- 3:52while the tinsmiths had been working on mending the woodman himself, another of the
- 3:55winkies, who was a goldsmith, had made an axe handle of solid gold
- 4:00and fitted it to the woodman's axe instead of the old broken handle. Others
- 4:04polished the blade until all the rust was removed, and it glistened like burnished
- 4:09silver. As soon as he had spoke, the tin woman began to chop,
- 4:15and in a short time the tree fell over with a crash, whereupon
- 4:17the scarecrow's clothes fell out of the branches and rolled off on the ground.
- 4:24Dorothy picked them up and had the Winkies carry them back to the castle,
- 4:28where they were stuffed with nice, clean straw. And behold, here was
- 4:31a scarecrow as good as ever, thanking them over and over again for saving
- 4:36him. Now that they were reunited, Dorothy and her friends spent a few
- 4:42happy days at the Yellow Castle, where they found everything they needed to make
- 4:46them comfortable. But one day the girl thought of ann AmAm and said,
- 4:50we must go back to Oz and claim his promise. Yes, said the
- 4:55Woodman, at last, I shall get my heart, and I shall get
- 4:59my brain, added the scarecrow joyfully. And I shall get my courage,
- 5:03said the lion thoughtfully. And I shall get back to Kansas, cried Dorothy,
- 5:09clapping her hands. Oh, let us start for the Emerald City tomorrow.
- 5:14This they decided to do. The Next day, they called the Winkies
- 5:16together and bade them goodbye. The Winkies were sorry to have them go,
- 5:20and they had grown so fond of the tin Woodman that they begged him to
- 5:24stay and rule over them and the Yellow land of the West. Finding they
- 5:29were determined to go, the Winkies gave Toto and the Lion each a golden
- 5:31collar, and to Dorothy they presented a beautiful brasilet studded with diamonds. And
- 5:38to the scarecrow they gave a gold headed walking stick to keep him from stumbling.
- 5:43And to the tin woodman they offered a silver oil can inlaid with gold
- 5:47and set with precious jewels. Every one of the travelers made the Winkies a
- 5:51pretty speech in return, and all shook hands with him until their arms ached.
- 5:57Dorothy went to the witch's cupboard to fill her back basket with food for
- 6:00the journey, and there she saw the golden cap. She tried it on
- 6:03her own head and found that it fitted her exactly. She did not know
- 6:09anything about the charm of the golden cap, but she saw that it was
- 6:12pretty, so she made up her mind to wear it and carry her sunbonnet
- 6:15in the basket. Then, being prepared for the journey, they all started
- 6:18for the Emerald City, and the Winkies gave them three cheers and many good
- 6:24wishes to carry with them. End of Chapter thirteen.
