- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the it's the 15th of April and my voice is still recovering
- 0:20from a very silly voice that I did on Sunday doing a kid
- 0:24sermon. And it turns out I would make a
- 0:28terrible full time actor because I need some serious hardcore
- 0:33voice coaching to help me do silly voices and keep my voice.
- 0:37But I will read it, but I will not go too high, otherwise I
- 0:39will crack and my voice will fall apart.
- 0:41I think I might need another cup of tea, but that will come ever
- 0:45so shortly. But before then, you and I've
- 0:48got some work to do. We get to sit down with Jesus
- 0:52and his disciples in that upper room as he continues to talk
- 0:56about the work that is to come, the Spirit that is to join them,
- 1:00and the sadness that they will go through, which will
- 1:02ultimately turn to joy. Oh, this wonderful, wonderful
- 1:05story heading toward the cross. Join me, friends, as we head up
- 1:10that staircase into that upper room to sit around the table
- 1:14with our friends and our Lord as we read together.
- 1:18John, Chapter 16. I have told you these things so
- 1:32that you won't abandoned your faith, for you will be expelled
- 1:36from the synagogues and the time is coming when those who kill
- 1:41you will think they are doing a holy service for God.
- 1:45This is because they have never known the Father or me.
- 1:49Yes, I'm telling you these things now so that when they
- 1:53happen, you will remember my warning.
- 1:56I didn't tell you earlier because I was going to be with
- 1:59you for a while longer, but now I'm going away to the one who
- 2:04sent me, and not one of you is asking where I'm going.
- 2:09Instead, you grieve because of what I've told you.
- 2:12But in fact, it is best for you that I go away because if I
- 2:16don't, the advocate won't come. If I do go away, then I will
- 2:22send Him to you, and when He comes, He will convict the world
- 2:26of its sin and of God's righteousness and of the coming
- 2:31judgement. The world's sin is that it
- 2:35refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available
- 2:39because I go to the Father and you will see me.
- 2:42No more judgement will come because the ruler of this world
- 2:47has already been judged. There is so much more I want to
- 2:51tell you, but you can't bear it right now.
- 2:55When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all
- 2:59truth. He will not speak on His own,
- 3:02but will tell you what He has heard.
- 3:04He will tell you about the future.
- 3:07He will bring me glory by telling you whatever He receives
- 3:10from me. All that belongs to the Father
- 3:13is mine. This is why I said the Spirit
- 3:17will tell you whatever He receives from me, in a little
- 3:22while you won't see me anymore, but a little while after that
- 3:26you will see me again. Some of the disciples asked each
- 3:30other, what does he mean when he says in a little while you won't
- 3:34see me, but then you will see me and I'm going to the Father.
- 3:39What does he mean by a little while?
- 3:42We don't understand. Jesus realised they wanted to
- 3:46ask him about it, so he said, Are you asking yourselves what I
- 3:50meant? I said in a little while you
- 3:53won't see me, but a little while after that you will see me
- 3:57again. I tell you the truth.
- 4:00You will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me,
- 4:04but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief
- 4:08will suddenly turn to wonderful joy, and it will be like a woman
- 4:13suffering the pains of labour. When a child is born, her
- 4:17anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into
- 4:21the world. So you have sorrow now, but I
- 4:25will see you again. Then you will rejoice, and no
- 4:29one can rob you of that joy. At that time you won't need to
- 4:34ask me for anything. I tell you the truth.
- 4:37You will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your
- 4:40request because you use my name. You haven't done this before.
- 4:46Ask using my name and you will receive and you will have
- 4:51abundant joy. I've spoken of these matters and
- 4:57figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively
- 5:01and will tell you plainly all about the Father.
- 5:04Then you will ask in my name. I'm not saying I will ask the
- 5:08Father on your behalf, for the Father himself loves you dearly
- 5:12because you love me and believe that I came from God.
- 5:17Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave
- 5:22the world and return to the Father.
- 5:26Then his disciples said at last you're speaking plainly and not
- 5:31figuratively. Now we understand that you know
- 5:35everything and there's no need to question you from this.
- 5:39We believe that you came from God.
- 5:43Jesus asked. Do you finally believe?
- 5:47But the time is coming. Indeed, it's here now, when you
- 5:51will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me
- 5:55alone. Yet I am not alone, because the
- 5:58Father is with me. I've told you all this, that you
- 6:03may have peace in me. Here on earth, you'll have many
- 6:07trials and sorrows, but take heart, because I have overcome
- 6:13the world. Oh Jesus, what a wonderful deal
- 6:26you give us. Yes, you had to leave your
- 6:30friends. You had to go through this
- 6:32terrible ordeal so that you could win your victory and give
- 6:38us your Spirit. And today, your Spirit lives
- 6:41with us, in US, and every word that spirit prompts us is your
- 6:46words, as you said in today's reading.
- 6:49And then as we live each day, your words in our ears, knowing
- 6:54that no matter what happens around us, no matter what this
- 6:56world throws at us, you have overcome the world.
- 7:01You and your victory this Easter is more than what any power in
- 7:07this world can possibly try and shackle you down with.
- 7:12Jesus, You are incredible, and we come before you and we
- 7:17worship you because you have come from the Father and indeed,
- 7:21with the Father, you rule everything.
- 7:25Yeah, you are amazing. So we come before you on our
- 7:31knees in worship to glorify you and pray all of this in your
- 7:35holy, holy name. Amen.
